Norwegian sun cruise ship hits iceberg near alaska, video shows.

Chilling video from terrified passengers on board a Norwegian Cruise ship captured an iceberg the “size of a semi-truck” that was struck by the vessel near Alaska over the weekend.

The Norwegian Sun ship was transitioning to Hubbard Glacier in Alaska as part of a nine-night trip when it suddenly plowed into the “growler” iceberg on Saturday, the cruise line said.

One of the 2,000 passengers on board, Jennifer Lopez, told Fox Weather that she had been jogging on the ship’s running track when she was suddenly knocked over by the impact.

Iceberg is pictured in the water

“It was a pretty hard hit,” she told the outlet.

Lopez immediately started filming and captured the remnants of the iceberg bobbing in the water.

“It seems that we sliced the glacier right through the middle,” Lopez said, adding that her video captured just one portion of the iceberg.

A fellow passenger, Alicia Amador, told the Juneau Empire that “the whole boat came to a complete stop from the impact. It was a scary experience.”

Amador recalled hearing a “big noise” when the ship first made contact with the iceberg, which she described as being the same size of a semi-truck.

The ship, which immediately rerouted to the Alaskan town of Juneau for assessment, suffered damage to the front right of the vessel after striking the iceberg, the US Coast Guard said.

The cruise docked for two days in Juneau before being given the all-clear to sail back to Seattle at a reduced speed.

The Norwegian Sun ship

“Contracted divers along with a member from the Coast Guard Sector Juneau Prevention Team assessed the damage and deemed it seaworthy to make way to its home port in Seattle for repairs,” a Coast Guard spokesperson said.

A growler is a small iceberg that only has less than 3.3 feet of ice showing above the water, according to the National Snow & Ice Data Center.

A Carnival Cruise Line ship struck "an errant piece of drifting ice last Thursday while sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska," the company confirmed to FOX Business on Monday.

The hull of the Carnival Spirit underwent an assessment and no damage was found, the company said. The ship continued on its current seven-day cruise that arrives back in Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday.

Carnival said "the vessel continued on its cruise and there has been no impact to operations." Despite this, social media reactions took a turn for the dramatic.

"If we die, it was damn-well worth it," passenger Cassandra Goskie said in a video she posted in a private Carnival VIFP Club Members Facebook group and shared with FOX Business. "It's a Titanic moment."

"Oh, we are hitting it," she said, as other passengers could be seen looking over the side of the ship. "Damn."

The video's caption reads, "Carnival did an AMAZING job of keeping all the passengers and staff safe and updated."

One X user shared photos with their local meteorologist that showed the iceberg and a boat, which appeared to be assessing the ship for damage.

Carnival said in a statement to FOX Business that the ship did not experience delays, and that the Spirit "arrived in Skagway on Friday as scheduled."

The Carnival Spirit was built in 2001. It can take just over 2,600 guests on voyages with 920 team members onboard, according to a ship fact sheet.

While its home port is currently Seattle, the ship has upcoming cruises from Mobile, Alabama.

Alaska is considering a new policy to limit the number of visitors to its capital, Juneau, amid concerns about the impact of overtourism, expanding on measures introduced last year.

Juneau last year limited visitation to just five cruise ships per day, and in June, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian agreed to limit the number of passengers visiting the shore per day as well: 16,000 per day Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 on Saturdays starting in 2026, according to the Alaska Beacon .

Cruise season runs from early April to late October, and the capital continues to prove a highly popular destination with several glaciers nearby , including the Mendenhall Glacier. Residents in recent years have raised concerns about the increased traffic, congested trails and noise pollution from both cruise ships and helicopter tours.

The cruise industry produces around $375 million in direct investment into Juneau, mostly through passenger spending. Tourism dipped during the coronavirus pandemic, but has spiked in the past 18 months as travel resumed normal levels, with a record 1.6 million cruise passengers visiting Juneau in 2023.

SEATTLE (KABC) -- A cruise ship that struck an iceberg in Alaska has docked in Seattle for repairs.

Video shows the moment the ship hit the iceberg on Saturday.

The ship was turned around to Juneau, where it underwent inspection. It was cleared to travel at lower speeds to Seattle by authorities.

The Norwegian Sun arrived in Seattle Thursday. It hit part of the iceberg near Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Passengers said the impact was so hard that it caused some of them to fall over.

A Nevada family who was onboard says the impact sounded like a loud door being slammed.

Benjamin Talbott was hanging out with family when his brother, Anthony Romo, noticed something in the water and told him to take out his phone. Talbott recorded as the cruise ship struck the big chunk of iceberg.

"Then all sudden, boom, the whole ship shakes. And I'm like, 'Well, what's going on?' And then I had to start recording and I looked at the front of the ship and all I see is this an iceberg just turning over and coming down. And I was like, Oh my God, we hit an iceberg," he said.

The voyage was cut short and guests disembarked in Seattle due to necessary repairs for the ship, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.

No injuries were reported.

"Boom. The whole ship shakes": Cruise ship that hit iceberg in Alaska arrives in Seattle for repairs

Cruise Ship Iceberg

A cruise ship that struck an iceberg in Alaska has docked in Seattle for repairs.

The Norwegian Cruise Line ship Norwegian Sun arrived Thursday. It hit part of an iceberg Saturday near Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

The ship was turned around to Juneau, where it underwent inspection. It was cleared by authorities to travel at lower speeds to Seattle.

CBS Seattle affiliate KIRO-TV reports that the ship can hold 2,000 passengers.

A Nevada family who was onboard says the impact sounded like a loud door being slammed.

Benjamin Talbott was hanging out with his family when his brother, Anthony Romo, noticed something in the water and told him to take out his phone. Talbott recorded as the cruise ship struck the big chunk of iceberg.

"Then all sudden, boom, the whole ship shakes. And I'm like, 'Well, what's going on?' And then I had to start recording and I looked at the front of the ship and all I see is this ... iceberg just turning over and coming down. And I was like, 'Oh my God, we hit an iceberg,'" he said.

Dave Morgan, a passenger on the ship, told KIRO a repair person at the shipyard told him the damage was 14 inches by 10 feet and the plan was to bring in a welder to put a piece of metal over the damage.

Morgan said passengers weren't allowed to leave the ship during the inspection in Juneau.

"The whole boat came to a complete stop from the impact," passenger Alicia Amador told the  Juneau Empire . "It was a scary experience."

A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told KIRO the ship's next cruise was canceled, and "All guests currently onboard will disembark in Seattle as originally planned."

Cruise ship collides with iceberg near Southeast Alaska glacier

Coast Guard divers in Juneau assessed damage to the 2,000-passenger cruise ship Norwegian Sun on Monday.

The Norwegian Cruise Lines ship hit an iceberg near Hubbard Glacier on Saturday. A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said the ship was “engulfed by dense fog, limiting visibility,” and that’s the reason it hit what the cruise line is calling a “growler” — a small iceberg about the size of a grand piano.

But passenger Jason Newman of Atlanta, Georgia, says the fog had cleared when he felt the impact.

“The ship had a severe judder,” he said “You could feel the strike. And then it listed minorly.”

Newman said the ship limped out of the bay and all the way to Juneau at 10 mph — he tracked their speed using a phone app. The ship skipped its scheduled Skagway stop on Sunday and reached Juneau on Sunday night at around 5 p.m.

He said passengers did not hear from the captain until 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, when he confirmed the ship had struck an iceberg.

Newman says passengers were allowed a five-hour shore leave Sunday night in Juneau but were confined to the ship on Monday.

“They told us they couldn’t get the authority to approve us to leave the ship,” he said.

Newman said the cruise line had canceled the entire day of tours for everybody on board by 10 a.m. He had planned a jeep tour in the morning.

“I’m sure that all the tour operators lost revenue,” he said.

The cruise ship was moored at Franklin Street Dock in Juneau until Monday afternoon when it left port. It’s next scheduled stop is in Ketchikan, but port agents, cruise agencies and the coast guard could not confirm that the ship would stick to its itinerary after the incident.

Petty Officer Lexi Preston with Coast Guard public affairs said that after the assessment, it would be up to Cruise Lines Agencies of Alaska to determine what will happen next.

BY FRANCESCA STREET, CNN

(CNN) — The words “Titanic moment” are possibly the last thing you want to hear on a boat – but that was the phrase used by one passenger on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship last week, after the vessel unexpectedly struck an iceberg.

No one was hurt on board and the ship was undamaged by the incident, which a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson described as the vessel hitting “an errant piece of drifting ice.”

Carnival Spirit was sailing in Tracy Arm Fjord, Alaska, a waterway south of the city of Juneau known for its spectacular beauty – and pieces of floating ice.

Videos of the incident circulated on social media in the aftermath, as multiple passengers filmed the moment the ship collided with the iceberg.

Cassandra Goskie  posted a video on TikTok  in which a voice is heard saying: “If we die it was damn well worth it, it’s a Titanic moment,” just before the vessel struck the piece of ice.

Assessing the damage

Meanwhile passenger Saurabh Singhal described the vessel coming to a halt “for hours to assess damages” in a Facebook post.

“An assessment determined no damage to the ship’s hull and the vessel continued on its cruise and there has been no impact to operations,” the Carnival spokesperson told  CNN Travel.

The Carnival Spirit finished its seven-day Alaska cruise on Tuesday without interruption, returning to Seattle, Washington. The vessel has since embarked on another round trip to Alaska, this time for 14 days.

In 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line vessel Norwegian Sun  hit a piece of an iceberg  while sailing in Alaska, sustaining damage to its starboard bow. There were no injuries.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination, but there’s reportedly been  pushback in recent years  from locals concerned about over congested waterways in the region.

Alaska’s waters are also known as some of the most challenging for cruise ships to navigate.

“That ice is hard and can damage the hull or propellers,” Captain John Herring, a marine pilot in southeast Alaska who boards ships in the region to help ensure safe passage,  told CNN Travel in 2022.   “Strong winds and currents make navigating icy waters even harder.”

Despite these difficult conditions, “we very rarely – if ever – see any issues related to sailings in icy waters,” said cruise expert Chris Gray Faust, executive editor of Cruise Critic, a review site and online cruise community.

“Today’s cruise ships are specifically built to sail a number of different waters,” Gray Faust told CNN Travel. “Those that sail in Alaska are not only able to withstand icy waters, they have experienced captains who are familiar with the landscape, which is why the incident being reported caused no issue to the ship or the sailing.”

Watch: Cruise Ship Collides With Large Piece Of Drifting Ice In Alaska

Cruise Ship

A Carnival cruise ship collided with a large piece of ice while sailing in Alaska’s Tracy Arm Fjord last week. Despite the unexpected incident, no one was injured, and the Carnival Spirit sustained no damage.

According to a Carnival Cruise Line representative, the ship hit “an errant piece of drifting ice” while navigating the scenic waterway south of Juneau, known for its magnificent beauty and floating ice.

The ship waited for many hours to examine the situation before continuing its journey after determining that the hull was unharmed.

The Carnival Spirit completed its seven-day Alaska cruise without any further incident. On Tuesday, it returned to Seattle, Washington, before starting another 14-day round-trip to Alaska.

Videos of the incident soon circulated on social media, with one passenger referring to it as a “Titanic moment.” Another passenger shared on social media that the ship stopped “for hours to assess damages,” but the trip was not interrupted.

Experts say that while Alaska’s seas are known to be challenging for cruise ships to navigate due to severe winds, currents, and hard ice, such incidents are rare. A marine pilot in southeast Alaska stated that the ice might potentially harm the hull or propellers but added that the situation is unusual.

A cruise industry expert said that modern cruise ships are designed to travel in various conditions and can handle ice waters, particularly in Alaska, where experienced captains are familiar with the area.

From April Futrell “Good evening James! We are on the carnival spirit and hit an iceberg just outside of Sitka and Tracy arm fjord! Here’s some pictures! We are safe and after assessing for damage we are back on track headed to Skagway!” pic.twitter.com/KIUkrlLtx9 — James Spann (@spann) September 6, 2024

The incident is similar to one that occurred in 2022 when a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel, the Norwegian Sun, collided with an iceberg while sailing in Alaska. The collision damaged the starboard bow, but no injuries were reported.

As Alaska continues to be a popular cruise destination, some locals have expressed concerns about congested waterways.

Cruise Ship 'Made Contact' with Large Piece of Ice in What Passenger Called a 'Titanic Moment'

The Carnival Spirit struck floating ice in an Alaskan fjord last week and cruisers captured the moment on Tiktok

cruise ship collides with iceberg

A cruise ship struck a large floating piece of ice in Alaska last week in a scene one passenger called a "Titanic moment."

On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Carnival Spirit cruise ship was traversing the notoriously icy Tracy Arm Fjord when it "made contact with an errant piece of drifting ice," a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement to PEOPLE.

In a video shared to TikTok of the cruise — which departed from Seattle, Wash. on Sept. 3 — user Cassandra Goskie documented the moment. "If we die it was damn-well worth it, it's a Titanic moment," Goskie said in the clip as the ship approached the ice, which appeared to make contact with its right side. "Oh gosh. We're hitting it. Damn."

Thankfully, she wrote, the ice "didn't do any damage that caused us to use any emergency procedures."

A Carnival spokesperson confirmed there was an assessment that determined there was "no damage to the ship’s hull" as the boat "continued on its cruise" with "no impact to operations.” CNN reports that no one on board the ship was hurt.

The footage itself showed multiple passengers on the side of the ship with their phones out, recording the large chunk of blue-tinged ice as the Spirit sailed right toward it. In the video's caption, Goskie commended Carnival staff on how they responded to the ice, writing, "The crew did an amazing job at [assessing] the damage and keep all of its crew and passengers safe and informed!"

While CNN reports that passenger Saurabh Singhal said the ship was stopped “for hours to assess damages," the ship reportedly returned to Seattle as planned after its seven-day cruise on Tuesday, Sept. 10, before embarking again on a 14-day trip to Alaska.
