3800 American Ghost Towns You Can Visit on One Map

By shaunacy ferro | oct 26, 2018.

Geotab

Not every city is destined to survive forever. In the 19th century, plenty of towns established during mining, oil, and railway booms flourished for a few decades, then shriveled up when their single source of economic support dried up, leaving entire towns abandoned. Geotab recently mapped out more than 3800 of these ghost towns across the U.S., diving into what areas have the highest concentration of long-abandoned settlements.

When you click on each state, pop-ups will reveal how many ghost towns that state is home to, which county has the highest concentration of them, and which city features the most in a 25- or 50-mile radius around it.

The image above is from Berlin, Nevada, a one-time mining town established in the 1880s. The mine shut down after a strike in the early 1900s, and was abandoned by the 1910s. Many of the original buildings remain standing today, though. It's now part of Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park.

Below is Harrisburg, a ghost town in Utah established in 1859. Settlers struggled to farm on the rugged land, and floods and other disasters eventually drove them to relocate elsewhere. It was abandoned by the 1890s, but remnants of some of the stone buildings are still around.

While we often associate ghost towns with Western locales like California (where there are 346 ghost towns), there are a striking number of them in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, where the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression left 308, 236, and 511 towns abandoned, respectively. Florida is also full of ghostly remains of cities, with 257 of them across the state. States in other parts of the country have strikingly few ghost towns. The Northeast is particularly bare: Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Maine have one, four, and five, respectively.

Explore the entire project here . If you don't have the time for a road trip to see all 3800-plus ghost towns on the map, you can take a virtual tour of the now-abandoned 19th century town of Bodie, California here , or check out our list of 10 specific ghost towns in the U.S. to visit. Though of course, if you really love ghost towns, you could just buy your own .

Virtual ghost tours

Winchester Mystery House

1.  Winchester Mystery House

Sarah Winchester spent 38 years intricately remodeling her home into the sprawling 24,000 square-foot mansion . There was seemingly no architectural rhyme or reason to the property's design—there are unfinished staircases, misplaced windows, a door that leads nowhere. However, it's believed that this labyrinth-like layout intended to confuse the spirits of those killed by the Winchester Repeating Arms' guns (the company Sarah inherited from her husband's family). Finding your way out of this confusing attraction might be more challenging than finding spirits.

Pittock Mansion

2.  Pittock Mansion

Henry and Georginia Pittock, who made their fortune in the newspaper industry, had plans to retire and revel in Portland's panoramic views. They began construction on an impresive French Renaissance-style château, which was completed in 1914. However, they only lived there for four years until they passed away. Relatives inherited the home, which was later abandoned and eventually damaged in the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. But residents fought to keep the property open after the destruction, and two years later, the Pittock Mansion relaunched as a museum. Some say the Pittocks are still there—after all, they truly didn't have too much time to enjoy the grounds. Don't be alarmed though: Visitors claim to see apparitions of the husband and wife duo, but they are supposedly friendly spirits. Well, that's … reassuring.

Eastern State Penitentiary

3.  Eastern State Penitentiary

The world's first penitentiary—and most expensive, at one time—housed dangerous criminals like Al Capone, Leo Callahan and Freda Frost. Now, the menacing gothic structure is empty, though many claim there is still plenty lurking in the abandoned cellblocks.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum

4.  Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum

The quaint Victorian home in New England seems innocent enough, but its history is far from rosy. Back in 1892, a young woman named Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmom with an axe, though she was never proven guilty. If you're brave enough, you can even crash here overnight.

The Queen Mary

5.  The Queen Mary

Not all of this famed ship's passengers had a comforting experience. Just take it from the Lady in White and the man who was believed to have met his fate in the Queen Mary's boiler room, who are said to haunt the vessel to this day. Think you can hop aboard for a peek with their spirits still roaming? You're brave, dude.

4. Explore the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA

The Winchester Mystery House has been named a top haunted destination by Time Magazine, Travel Channel, and USA Today. This bizarre mansion in San Jose, California is filled with design curiosities and rumors of paranormal activity. Inside the home’s sprawling 24,000 square feet, you’ll find a mind-boggling 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms, 6 kitchens, and much more.

The home was originally an 8-room farmhouse purchased by a wealthy widow, Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester. She inherited the fortune of her late husband, William Winchester, heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Sarah began overseeing an enormous renovation and expansion of her home that spanned more than 35 years – from 1886 until her death in 1922. No one knows why Sarah chose to expand her home in such an enormous and unusual way.

In 1924, legendary magician Harry Houdini visited the mansion on Halloween night in an attempt to debunk the paranormal legends. He left with more questions than answers, and he famously referred to it as “The Mystery House.”

Explore the home on this video access tour and see if your team can unlock the mystery!

Pittoch Mansion Georgiana and Henry Pittoch

5. Wander the Halls of the Pittock Mansion in Portland, OR

This mansion near Portland, Oregon was once the home of newspaper publishers Henry and Georgiana Pittock. Henry transformed “The Oregonian” into a successful daily newspaper that remains in print. He was an avid outdoorsman and investor, while Georgiana was a skilled and impactful community leader. The two had nine children and were both actively involved in the community.

While Henry and Georgiana lived a happy life, their mansion is rumored to be haunted by their ghosts. They were only able to live in their beautiful home for a few years before they passed. As a result, many people think their spirits have lingered on.

Visitors have reported hearing phantom footsteps and seeing windows shutting and latching on their own. Additionally, some visitors have even reported the smell of roses, a nod to Georgiana’s role as founder of the Portland Rose Society and Portland’s Rose Festival.

Take a self-guided 3D tour of the mansion here .

9. See the Notorious Eastern State Penitentiary

The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was once “the most well-known and expensive prison in the world.” This gothic building was home to some of America’s most well-known criminals, including Al Capone and “Slick Willie” Sutton.

This spot is rumored to be one of the most haunted places in the U.S. In fact, NPR notes that “its 142-year history is full of suicide, madness, disease, murder, and torture, making it easy to imagine the spirits of troubled souls left behind to roam its abandoned halls.”

These days, the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is a nonprofit devoted to interpreting the legacy of American criminal justice reform. They lead educational and fun virtual tours for groups of up to 50 people.

10. See the Hotel that Inspired “The Shining”

In Estes Park, Colorado, The Stanley Hotel is famous for inspiring the Stephen King novel, “The Shining.” That’s because King and his wife, Tabitha, spent a spooky night at this hotel in the mid-1970s. Specifically, Room 217 inspired the popular book and movie.

In an interview, Stephen King said that he and Tabitha checked into a nearly-empty hotel as the season was winding down. The hotel’s long, empty corridors and the room’s claw-foot tub sparked King’s imagination for a book he had been working on. As a result, he decided to set the story in “The Overlook Hotel,” a fictional spot based on this hotel.

The perfect short haunted team tour? Take a 13-minute virtual trek through The Stanley Hotel! Additionally, you can turn this activity into a virtual book club by reading (or watching) “The Shining” along with it.

The Borden home became known for its ghostly activity in later years. In fact, the site is frequently included on lists of haunted houses for paranormal enthusiasts.

3. The Paris Catacombs

The Paris Catacombs are one of the creepiest places on the planet. To free up space in the city’s cemeteries, officials exhumed bones of the long dead from graveyards and reburied the remains in underground crypts. The result is miles-long tunnels full of skeletons beneath France’s capital city. Over 300,000 tourists visit the catacombs every year. Without ever booking a flight to France, you and your remote team can tour the site via a panoramic virtual tour. This virtual haunted tour is almost better than the real deal. Unlike the in-person experience, you will not have to battle claustrophobia or hurry along to avoid holding up the people behind you.

Learn more: Paris Catacombs .

4. Chernobyl

Chernobyl was the site of the largest nuclear plant disaster in history. The population abandoned the city in the aftermath of the meltdown, leaving behind rusting ferris wheels and crumbling buildings. Within the past few years the government eased some of the restrictions that barred visitors from traveling to the physical site, but the best way to explore the vicinity remains online. A high-resolution Google Maps tour of Chernobyl allows you to tour the eerie area from halfway across the world.

Learn more: Chernobyl.

5. Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls)

The Island of the Dolls sits near Mexico City. Supposedly, after a little girl drowned in the nearby canal, supernatural events began to occur on the island. A terrified island inhabitant hung dolls among the trees to please the girl’s spirit. Hundreds of dolls now hang in the island’s trees. You can view pictures and watch a video tour of the island on the website below.

Learn more: Isla de las Muñecas (Island of the Dolls) .

6. Eastern State Penitentiary

The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, once housed criminals like gangster Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. Punishment was the jail’s main focus, and the institution was one of the first to use solitary confinement as a punitive measure. Many men went mad, and rumors speculate that tortured spirits linger. The abandoned prison now serves as a museum and hosts a yearly Halloween experience. Though you cannot currently take the Terror Behind the Walls Tour virtually, you can enjoy a general online tour for free, or can pay to book an educational group virtual tour.

List of “Fake” Online Haunted House Tours

From online escape rooms to shocking video clips to spooky flash games, here is a list of fake virtual haunted houses to explore with your crew.

11. McKamey Manor

This entry is not for the faint of heart. The in-person version of the tour requires visitors to sign a 40 page waiver, earning the attraction the title of America’s most extreme haunted house. Protesters have dubbed the business a “torture museum,” as the experience centers around psychological discomfort. While a live virtual haunted house walkthrough is not yet available, you can watch dozens of videos that will give you an inkling of the terror. Truthfully, three minute clips might be all you and your remote teammates can stomach. You may need to binge kitten clips between. But if you and your team feel brave, then you can check out McKamey Manor’s video offerings.

Note : Warn your teams that several of the videos contain very graphic content, and only watch if all teammates feel comfortable.

From Philadelphia's Mutter Museum to the catacombs of Paris, here are 10 creepy virtual tours of some of the most haunting places from around the world!

Mütter Museum

If you’ve got a taste for the morbid, then The College of Physicians of Pennsylvania’s Mütter Museum in Philadelphia is a must-see. One of America’s best collections of medical history, this museum contains models, anatomical specimens, and medical instruments. Encompassing the history of the medical sciences as well as the mysteries of the human body, the contents of this collection are as eerie as they are educational. The video tour of this incredible site includes remarkable exhibits such as Dr. Joseph Hyrtl’s human skull collection, the Soap Lady, and Albert Einstein’s brain.

On April 26th, 1986 near the Ukrainian city of Pripyat, a nuclear accident occurred at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. During a planned safety test, unstable conditions resulted in an uncontrolled nuclear reaction. A large amount of energy was abruptly released alongside an explosion, and for a period of 9 days, radioactive contamination flooded the area. In an effort to manage casualties, upwards of 100,000 people were evacuated from a 19-mile exclusion zone.

This event is regarded as the worst nuclear disaster in history. Though only 2 people died in the initial explosion, roughly 40 members of station staff and emergency responders passed away from radiation-related complications within the next decade. Cancer rates were shown to have increased in the nearby population as well.

In this video tour from Frontline, take a walk through the ghost town bearing the shadows of sudden tragedy.

Pennhurst Asylum

In Spring City, Pennsylvania sits what remains of Pennhurst Asylum , a building that formerly housed the mentally and physically disabled residents of the region. The asylum began taking in patients in 1908. Behind its doors, however, tragedy ensued. For 79 years, many Pennhurst patients suffered neglect, abuse, and brutalization. The site was finally shuttered in 1987. It’s said that to this day severe paranormal activity lingers in the halls.

You think graveyard tours are a fun and spooky activity? You ain’t seen nothing, yet.

In the late 18th century, Paris’s cemeteries were tied to rampant health problems. As a result, the city made a decision to relocate the dead to an underground location—the labyrinthine Tombe-Issoire quarries beneath the plain of Montrouge. From 1785 to 1860, the bones from graves, tombs, and charnel houses were moved to the catacombs. Public viewings began as early as 1809.

Touring the catacombs today is a profoundly unnerving experience. As visitors maneuver through the claustrophobic maze-like halls some 60 feet underground, they encounter actual human remains. While sharing space with millions of dead Parisians, visitors also discover incredible architecture and a chilling look at history. In this virtual tour, interactive slides allow you to take a 360-degree look at the halls, getting up close and personal to the catacombs' eternal residents.

Winchester Mystery House

This architectural marvel sits in San Jose, California, and was once the home to Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, the heiress to Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. Construction on what started out as a humble 8-room farmhouse began in 1886, not long after the tragic passing of both Sarah’s infant daughter and husband. It’s said that the remodeling and additions to the home never stopped until Sarah’s death in 1922. Today. the enigmatic estate covers 24,000 square feet and boasts 160 rooms.

No one truly knows what compelled Sarah to build a maze-like home full of dead ends, decoy rooms, and “13” motifs. Some say it was depression and pure eccentricity. Others say she operated under the orders of a psychic. Others still say she was inspired by ghosts of the Old West, all those restless souls gunned down by Winchester weapons. Whatever the reason, many are convinced the Winchester Mansion crackles with paranormal activity to this day.

For just $8.99, you can take an independent and immersive virtual tour of each floor of the bizarre abode. Explore rooms off-limits to in-person visitors, and glimpse the wonders of this haunted home from every angle. You can also rent or buy a video tour by clicking here . The 'Chernobyl VR Project' Lets You Explore A Nuclear Ghost Town

In 1986, one of the worst nuclear power plant accidents in history hit the city of Pripyat, Ukraine. An explosion at the Chernobyl factory released large quantities of radioactive particles into the air, killing 31 people and causing long-term effects, like cancer, for countless others. It cost over 18 million rubles and 500,000 workers to control the contamination and avoid a much bigger catastrophe. Shortly thereafter, Pripyat became a ghost town.

You can actually go visit the city in real life, or whatever remains of it, as the radiation levels have dropped considerably. But the trip can still be dangerous and expensive for most, and that’s a shame. The Chernobyl disaster is a perfect and depressing showcase of what can happen if humans mismanage nuclear firepower and factories. It’s an important part of history, and now, with the help of virtual reality, Chernobyl VR will let anyone with a headset explore and study Pripyat.

Shedding Light on the Chernobyl Catastrophe

“The catastrophe in Ukraine and neighboring Poland left a permanent impression on Polish history, including our own childhood in the 1980s,” said Wojciech Pazdur, Creative Director on Chernobyl VR.

He and the rest of the team at The Farm 51 wanted to create a VR experience that could easily let people learn about a tragic event that impacted thousands of innocent people. Chernobyl VR combines traditional video game mechanics with movie narration, creating a virtual tour of most areas in Pripyat, and the Chernobyl factory itself.

chernobyl-exclusion-zone-4

The idea behind creating this VR tour came when The Farm 51 started working on its upcoming first-person shooter Endgame, which forced the studio to study and invest in high-tech laboratories for scanning people and objects. Once the developer started to play around with ultra-realistic 3D scans,  it realized it might be able to pull off a VR project that can educate people on a tragic event. But to successfully pull off Chernobyl VR , several team members had to take a trip to Pripyat.

“Our team visited the contaminated zone a few times, and we even obtained a special pass for scientists, enabling us to visit places not accessible for ordinary tourists,” said Pazdur. “Interestingly, before the first trip some of our team members were really afraid of going there, but the specific charm of that abandoned place made everybody in our company who didn’t get to go want to become a member of the visiting team.”

chernobyl-exclusion-zone

Not only did the studio visit Pripyat, it also interviewed people directly affected by, and involved with the disaster, from first responders, to those whose families suffered emotionally and physically.

“As far as research is concerned, we took thousands of photos that served as a base for reconstructing specific places,” said Pazdur. “We recorded 360-degree movies constituting an integral part of our application. We talked to many people who used to work, or still work and live there. Some of them can be seen and heard while playing the game. We talked with the famous ‘liquidators’, who are people that were dispatched immediately after the explosion to perform repair and cleaning works. Many of them were exposed to huge irradiation and died several years later from various diseases.

“We approached a number of famous people emotionally linked to the catastrophe as well. Those include Vitali Klitschko mentioned before, whose family members suffered from radiation sickness, and Svetlana Alexievich, a Nobel prize-winning author of many books about Chernobyl.”

The swings and ferris wheel remain in an amusement park that was scheduled to open on May 1, 1986, for the Soviet May Day celebrations in Pirpyat, Ukraine. It never opened, as the Chernobyl disaster happened on April 26, 1986, a week before the opening.

The Aftermath of a Nuclear Disaster

The most important aspect that The Farm 51 needed to get right with Chernobyl VR is its photorealistic visuals. The studio wants players to feel like they’re experiencing an interactive documentary movie. Every location, person, and object in the project, from the abandoned ferris wheel (actual real-life image shown above,) to ravaged buildings and trees, all look real and authentic, immersing you in a tour of an eerie ghost town. The studio’s 3D scanning and proprietary technology — called Reality 51 — made these photorealistic visuals possible to pull off.

Of course, The Farm 51 ran into a slew of problems during development. Compressing and optimizing large amounts of data without exacerbating VR hardware, like the Oculus Rift, was a herculean task that the studio managed to overcome. Other issues, mostly bureaucratic, were a little bit trickier to maneuver around.

“I mentioned problems with compression and optimization, but we had equally important challenges related to the specific conditions in Ukraine,” said Pazdur. “We had difficulties with obtaining permits for entry into the zone. Also, communication in English was a barrier. There were additional problems with transportation, resulting from the fact that Ukraine remains in conflict with Russia, which severely affects the country’s infrastructure.

“Another category of problems resulted from inadequate hardware capabilities from the older VR headset iterations. We had to wait long time until we received a versions of these headsets that fulfilled our hefty technological requirements. In fact, we are still waiting for hardware capable of supporting higher resolutions of video and graphics.”

chernobyl-exclusion-zone-5

VR Can Be Used for More Than Just Games

The Farm 51 didn’t make Chernobyl VR just to test out some intriguing new technology. It wants to inform players about such catastrophes, as there are still plenty of nuclear power plants in operation around the world, and even just one mistake can ruin thousands of innocent lives. The studio worked with an environmental organization — Greenpeace — to help raise awareness.

“Greenpeace approached us, asking to help shine light on operated nuclear reactors that are largely being ignored, “ said Pazdur. “Greenpeace used Chernobyl VR in street campaigns to tell people about those still existing threats. So Chernobyl VR is decidedly an educational application designed to leave a permanent trace in our memory about the contaminated Chernobyl zone. We want people to also know and remember the disaster, especially considering the possibility of Pripyat and the Chernobyl factory ceasing to exist in the near future.

“We also donated a certain portion of revenues from Chernobyl VR’s sales to aid the victims of the catastrophe and their families. We are working with the Polish-Ukrainian foundation, Open Dialog, to select the people and organizations that most deserve the help.”

VR allows for more immersive and intriguing new gameplay experiences, there’s no denying that. Being transported in fantastical worlds where you feel like a constant participant is profound. But VR isn’t just for video games, as this tech can be used in several ways for different purpose; whether it’s documentary films, virtual vacations to exotic locations you might otherwise never visit, or interactive tours of important historical sites,

chernobyl-exclusion-zone-6

“I hope there will be more and more VR applications that carry social and political messages,” said Pazdur. “In my opinion, the potential of VR for telling serious stories is inexhaustible. As an industry we can demonstrate that, besides games and addictive porn applications, (which will also certainly appear in great numbers), there is room for other messages and other stories, can be beneficial for people in numerous ways.

“As creators, we can enable them to see things or places they would never be able to visit or experience without VR, and Chernobyl is one such place.”

The Chernobyl VR Project is now available for download on the Oculus Store and Steam  for $14.99. You can visit the official website for more information.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
