What Is Taylor Swift's Next Album & When Does It Release?

Who taylor swift's "betty" song is about & how it connects to ryan reynolds, "that movie ain't getting made today": mark wahlberg reflects on his oscar-nominated movie 27 years later.

  • "Champagne Problems" is a song from Taylor Swift's 2020 album, evermore.
  • The song is about a college romance that ends with a rejected marriage proposal, exploring the heartbreak of both the man and woman involved.
  • The song is a fictional story created by Swift and her co-writer, Joe Alwyn, and has become a fan favorite, often performed during her live concerts.

One of the several songs that Taylor Swift sings during Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) is "champagne problems" from evermore , which contains complex lyrics that seemingly have a deeper meaning. The concert film, directed by Sam Wrench and produced by Swift, premiered in theaters in October 2023 and was a massive triumph. Over the course of its theatrical run, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour became the highest-grossing concert movie of all time after earning over $260 million at the box office, surpassing Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (which grossed $99 million) with ease.

Swift's recording-breaking concert tour, the Eras Tour, features the pop star taking her fans on a journey through nine of her "eras," aka nine of her ten studio albums, and one surprise song acoustic set. Although two songs are still missing from Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) on Disney+, the streaming release of the hit film includes the majority of Swift's 44-song setlist, satisfying many fans after some tracks were left off the theatrical version. Thankfully, one of the most important songs from evermore — "champagne problems" — is still one of the movie's highlights.

What Is Champagne Problems About?

A longtime college romance & failed marriage proposal.

Taylor Swift released "champagne problems" as the second track of 2020's evermore — the third album Swift officially owned . During a typical Eras Tour show, the pop star performs "champagne problems" on a moss-covered piano following "'tis the damn season," "willow," and "marjorie" while she is in the evermore act of the concert (although Disney+ omitted "'tis the damn season" from Taylor Swift: The Era's Tour (Taylor's Version) ).

Swift picked the track for her setlist because "champagne problems" is one of the most popular songs from her ninth studio album, partly because of its heart-wrenching lyrics and powerful bridge that fans get to scream out at the Eras Tour. Some of the first chorus' lyrics include:

Your mom's ring in your pocket My picture in your wallet Your heart was glass, I dropped it Champagne problems

The tear-inducing number chronicles a doomed college romance that ends with a rejected marriage proposal. The couple that "champagne problems" is about has, assumingly, been together for a long time, but when the man proposes to the woman, she turns him down, leaving everyone speechless. The woman takes responsibility for the heartbreak and her explanation for her refusal can be explained in the bridge:

Sometimes you just don't know the answer 'Til someone's on their knees and asks you

The couple breaks up after she rejects his proposal, and the woman promises the man that he will find the right person for him (and that it's not her) in "champagne problems." However, while the evermore track describes the man's heartbreak, it also depicts the woman's pain and grief as she explains how her own personal troubles got in the way of her saying yes to her lover. She describes them as "champagne problems," a saying for when someone encounters an issue that is minuscule in comparison to more significant worries for less privileged people in the world.

Champagne Problems Is Fictional

It is not about taylor swift & joe alwyn.

Even though Taylor Swift has a way of making all the lyrics in her songs seem personal and real, the story in "champagne problems" on evermore is fictional. While the lyrics in songs like "All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version)" are inspired by Swift's breakups in real life, the evermore track is not based in reality. Swift wrote the song with Joe Alwyn (who is credited under the pseudonym William Bowery on the track listing) while they were still dating, but the lyrics are not about their relationship.

Swift's folklore and evermore , which the singer-songwriter describes as "sister records," allowed her to write about fictional tales, while also fitting in some lyrics pertaining to her personal life, of course. Inside evermore 's album booklet, Swift's prologue reveals that she "loved the escapism [she] found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales." The pop star also describes "champagne problems" as:

"The one where longtime college sweethearts had very different plans for the same night, one to end it and one who brought a ring."

So, it's safe to say that Swift's "champagne problems" features a story about a doomed romance that she and Alwyn concocted in their minds. Perhaps the evermore song was a sign of things to come for Swift and Alwyn's relationship, as they broke up in early 2023, a couple of years following the album's release. For all intents and purposes, though, "champagne problems" is a tragic but fictional love story.

Taylor Swift's 11th studio album already has a scheduled release date, with the tracklist & editions also being confirmed before ending The Eras Tour.

Champagne Problems Is (Probably) Not About Gilmore Girls' Rory & Logan

The gilmore girls fan theory.

One of the more popular fan theories surrounding the meaning behind "champagne problems" on evermore ( Taylor Swift's ninth released album ) is that it revolves around Rory Gilmore and Logan Huntzberger's love story in the popular comedy-drama television series Gilmore Girls . The relationship between the two fictional characters played out in a similar fashion to the people depicted in Swift's sentimental ballad.

The beauty of Swift's music is that she can somehow make those who listen to her songs relate to the lyrics, despite how specific they might be or whether they have gone through what the song is describing.

Rory and Logan met at Yale and fell in love throughout Gilmore Girls seasons 5 and 6. However, during the penultimate episode of Gilmore Girls , he proposes to her, and she rejects him. Several years later, Rory and Logan resumed their romance (while cheating on their significant others) in the Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life . But fans apply the lyrics of "champagne problems" to the college years of the relationship. Nevertheless, Swift has never confirmed that the evermore track is about Rory and Logan nor is there any strong evidence to prove so.

Taylor Swift performs a song called "Betty" during Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and the inspiration behind the lyrics relates to Ryan Reynolds.

What Taylor Swift Has Said About Champagne Problems

Playing the song is cathartic.

Given its popularity among her fanbase, Taylor Swift chose "champagne problems" as one of the songs she performs during Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) on Disney+. Years before the record-breaking worldwide concert tour, though, Swift spoke about the process of writing "champagne problems" for evermore and the meaning behind the lyrics with Zane Lowe for Apple Music . A few days following evermore 's debut, the pop star explained:

"Joe [Alwyn] and I really love sad songs. We've always bonded over music ... 'champagne problems' was one of my favorite bridges to write ... I'm so excited to one day be in front of a crowd when they all sing, 'She would have made such a lovely bride, what a shame she's f**ked in the head.' I know it's so sad, but it's those songs like 'All Too Well,' performing the song 'All Too Well' is one of the most joyful experiences I ever go through when I perform live. So, when there's a song like 'champagne problems,' where you know it's so sad, you know that, but I love a sad song."

Swift believes that performing "champagne problems" is cathartic, as it's a heartbreaking song, but singing along with a stadium full of thousands of fans during the Eras Tour is somewhat comforting. Of course, it probably helps that the lyrics seemingly do not pertain to Swift's personal life. However, the beauty of Swift's music is that she can somehow make those who listen to her songs relate to the lyrics, despite how specific they might be or whether they have gone through what the song is describing. As a result, "champagne problems" is one of Taylor Swift's best (yet devastating) songs .

Champagne Problems Isn't The Only Fictional Taylor Swift Song

Speak now, stay stay stay, & folklore.

Despite her reputation for calling out former lovers in her lyrics, several Taylor Swift songs are fictional in nature. This is especially true regarding her writing on songs in both folklore and evermore . This was actually the main theme of folklore . However, many songs from her entire catalog are fictional and not about her personal life. One example is the 2010 title track from Speak Now . While that album had songs targeted at John Mayer and Taylor Lautner, the title track was just about a dream she had .

"Stay Stay Stay" from Red is a song about daydreaming of finding real love. This song isn't about someone Swift was ever with, but about wistful thinking and is completely fictional from that point of view. However, folklore's entire theme is that it is a batch of songs that remain fictional and separated from reality. The entire album has songs that see Swift going full-on with her storytelling and creating characters, even some that drift between songs. Taylor Swift even released a documentary film about the making of the folklore album.

Taylor Swift enjoyed a "deeply abnormal and beautiful" moment during her latest stop on The Eras tour in Los Angeles, California.

After performing "Champagne Problems" during Tuesday's concert at SoFi Stadium, Swift got emotional as the audience delivered a standing ovation for nearly eight minutes.

"What do I say to you after that?" she asked the crowd. "That was so deeply abnormal and beautiful. I don't know what to do or say."

She continued, "I think it's safe to say that I, like all people, will experience a certain amount of emotional downward spirals throughout the course of the rest of my life and in those moments, you can rest assured I'm gonna think about what you just did. And I'm gonna feel better. So thank you. That was insane. It was crazy."

Swift took some time to collect herself, admitting that she was still struggling to come up with an appropriate reaction as she rambled on.

"I'm going to spend several decades trying to figure out words for how that just made me feel," she said. "I'm trying to get it together. I've completely lost control over my brain -- and that's your fault."

She concluded, "I'm just gonna float through the rest of the show, so thanks for that."

Before that, amid the applause, Swift was captured looking shocked and moved in several videos on social media. While she stayed quiet, she could be seen shaking her head while mouthing things like, "Oh my God," "What do I do?" and "I have lost control of the crowd."

Tuesday marked Swift's fifth night at SoFi Stadium, her second-to-last performance on the first U.S. leg of her tour. She'll wrap up in Los Angeles with a final bow on Wednesday, Aug. 9, before kicking off her international dates on Aug. 24 in Mexico City, Mexico.

While celebrities have attended The Eras Tour in droves all across the country, Swift's L.A. performances have been particularly star-studded. Among her most recent concertgoers are Selena Gomez, Emma Stone, Charlize Theron, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Taylor Lautner, Cameron Diaz, Tiffany Haddish, Kevin Costner, Sophia Bush, Victoria Justice, Ashley Greene, Zoe Saldana, Sofia Richie, Haley Lu Richardson, Michelle Monaghan, Camilla Luddington, Mariska Hargitay, Courteney Cox and Kaia Gerber,  to name just a few .

Review: 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour' accentuates her gift for artistic reinvention

It's as a storyteller that Swift emerges as the best of her generation.

Deep bows to the Crown Princess of Pop, who turns "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" into the musical event of the movie year.

Here's the splashiest, swooniest, silliest and sweetest souvenir program ever for a concert film. And you can dance to it while belting yourself hoarse. As my friend Rob Sheffield wrote in Rolling Stone, "It'll make you sing, scream and sob." What's not to like?

Captured over three performances at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium that ended the phenomenal seven-month U.S. leg of Swift's Eras Tour -- in-person overseas dates start in November -- this concert capture from director Samuel Wrench is no substitute for the thrill of live performance. But the camera brings us up close in a way that makes every seat the best seat in the house.

Shame on me for not seeing the movie in Eras cosplay or even a friendship bracelet, though her mostly female audience did just that as they hit the movie aisles to dance and sing with their idol decked out in dazzling gowns, boots and bodysuits.

For the ticket price of $19.89 (Taylor's birth year), you'll see Swift spend two hours and 45 minutes -- about half an hour short of the live shows -- zipping through the high points of her career with the help of singers, dancers, costume changes and eye-popping stagecraft.

"The Eras Tour" divides itself non-chronologically among nine of her chart-topping albums, including "Lover" (2019), "Fearless" (2008), "Evermore" (2020), "Reputation" (2017), "Speak Now" (2010), "Red" (2012), "Folklore" (2020), "1989" (2014) and "Midnights" (2022).

Among the high points in this big-screen version of the concert: an opening medley of "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince" and "Cruel Summer" that intros Her Highness like American royalty to a stadium of screaming fans and swaying smart-phone flashlights that evoke a rally ready to elect their leader by acclamation.

Another highlight: "The Man," in which Swift uses electropop and synths to explode the myth of power and conquest as a guy-thing wielded by the movie-star likes of Leonardo DiCaprio. "I'd be just like Leo in Saint Tropez," Swift sings, attacking the double standard with stinging conviction.

"All Too Well" reveals Swift onstage in a sparkling red gown and acoustic guitar to take on the 10-minute version of the ballad that tackles the subject of heartbreak. Swift delivers this aching cry from the heart like a one-act play, turning a stadium of nearly 8000 into a private conversation between just you and her.

"Illicit Affairs," sung during the most often quiet "Folklore" section of the concert from a cabin erected on stage, shows Swift letting loose on all who would treat her like a child as she sings with genuine threat, "Don't call me kid! Don't call me baby!"

"Champagne Problems," a superb song from "Evermore" that Swift wrote with her ex-lover, British actor Joe Alwyn, is staged as Swift sits at a moss-covered piano to describe the emotional fallout of a failed marriage proposal. On stage, the impact could be lost in spectacle. On screen, it's indelibly intimate, a stirring tribute to Swift's gifts as a storyteller.

And it's as a storyteller that Swift truly shines. Filmmaking is definitely next for Swift. She's just signed with Searchlight to helm her first feature. Her directing talent is evident in her videos for "All Too Well" and "The Man." And this time-capsule-worthy concert film beautifully accentuates her gifts for artistic reinvention.

"Our Song," from Swift's self-titled debut album in 2006, is one of the two "surprise" tunes she performs in the movie. And there's Swift, at 33, channeling the eager, awkward, country-singing teen she was in contrast to the cultural force she is now.

And the future? You leave "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" with the exhilarating feeling that she's just hitting her stride.

Taylor Swift Gets Emotional at Final Liverpool Show Singing a Song Written With Joe Alwyn

preview for Taylor Swift’s Iconic Career Evolution

The crowd had a huge reaction to the tune and Swift took out her earpiece to hear them before saying, “It is genuinely such an honor to play for a crowd like this. That fact that you would do that for us—I love you so much, Liverpool. Thank you.”

This weekend, Alwyn spoke out about his breakup with Swift for the first time since their split in 2023, telling the Sunday Times UK about the difficulty of navigating a private split in public.

“I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years,” he explained. “That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.”

He added that even with Swift’s art and music being in the world, there’s plenty people don’t know.

“So you have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition,” he explained. “And the truth is, to that last point, there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that.”

He continued, “As everyone knows, we together—both of us, mutually—decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private. It was never something to commodify, and I see no reason to change that now. And, look, this is also a little over a year ago now, and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life, professionally and personally.”

What Is the Meaning of Taylor Swift's Song, "Champagne Problems"?

Is this song about Joe?

Shannon Raphael - Author

Updated March 15 2024, 4:36 p.m. ET

Less than 24 hours after announcing the existence of her ninth studio album, "evermore," Taylor Swift released all 15 tracks (plus two bonus ones). The work came less than five months after "folklore's" debut in July of 2020. It is meant to be a sister album with a similar mood, sound, and style.

One "evermore" song that has gotten people talking is "champagne problems." It tells the story of a couple who deal with a failed proposal, though their family members have already popped the bubbly in a preemptive celebration.

At the time, Taylor and her then-beau, Joe Alwyn , had been dealing with engagement rumors. Naturally, some listeners assumed that the song tells a story about the demise of their own relationship.

What is the meaning of "champagne problems"?

What is the "champagne problems" meaning?

Taylor collaborated with William Bowery (which is the pseudonym for her ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn) on three songs featured "evermore."

These tracks include the album's titular song, "evermore," plus "coney island," and "champagne problems."

That's because the song is about a relationship in which the two people involved are on completely different paths. Taylor sings from the perspective of the person who turns down a proposal but who recognizes how entwined her life is with her partner.

It opens with one character (the person who proposed) sitting on a train. In the chorus, Taylor croons about breaking the other character's heart.

"Your mom's ring in your pocket / My picture in your wallet / Your heart was glass, I dropped it / Champagne problems," Taylor sings in the chorus.

Taylor then sings about how the other character's family was in on the proposal and how they opened up bottles of Dom Pérignon Champagne in anticipation of the engagement.

Instead, Taylor's character turned the proposal down.

"You had a speech, you're speechless / Love slipped beyond your reaches / And I couldn't give a reason / Champagne problems."

She then sings about not knowing that the relationship needed to be ended until the proposal took place: "Sometimes you just don't know the answer / 'Til someone's on their knees and asks you."

The song concludes with Taylor's character's hope that her ex will find someone who will be "the real thing." She hopes that this person will help "patch up" the tapestry Taylor "shred."

"Champagne problems" is one of several songs on "evermore" that is about broken hearts, sadness, and starting over.

Who is "champagne problems" about? Is Taylor singing about Joe Alwyn?

Although Joe and Taylor were ultimately not meant to be, Taylor articulated in the "evermore" album notes that the inspiration behind "champagne problems," specifically, is rooted completely in fiction.

She wrote that the song is one of the ones on the album that is meant to demonstrate "escapism" or "imaginary tales."

"Champagne problems" is "the one where longtime college sweethearts had very different plans for the same night, one to end it, and one who brought a ring," she wrote.

The lyrics do confirm that the couple in the song had been together since college. The bridge mentions a dorm and a shared group of friends.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

"'This dorm was once a madhouse' / I made a joke, 'Well, it's made for me' / How evergreen, our group of friends / don't think we'll say that word again," she notes in the bridge.

The 5 best and 5 worst Taylor Swift songs on the Eras Tour setlist

  • Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will soon resume in Mexico City before heading to South America.
  • Insider's music team, who attended the tour in New Jersey, rounded up the setlist's best and worst moments.
  • "Cruel Summer" and "Champagne Problems" are clear standouts, while others like "Bejeweled" should've been cut.

"Cruel Summer" is the perfect way to kick off the show.

champagne problems tour

Technically speaking, the Eras Tour setlist begins with "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince," but that's just so Swift can serenade fans who fought for our lives in the Ticketmaster queue: "It's been a long time coming, but / It's you and me / That's my whole world."

After finishing the chorus, Swift quickly transitions into "Cruel Summer," the show's true opening song.

And what an opener it is. The brilliant pop banger, which was released on "Lover" in 2019 and never promoted as a single, has soared into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 as the Eras Tour has taken over the world . By the end of this (cruel) summer, it may even end up at No. 1 . Behold, the power of Swift's drunken tears in the back of a car.

"Champagne Problems" always gets a standing ovation.

champagne problems tour

After Swift plays "Champagne Problems" on the piano, the applause that follows is deafening. It can last up to eight whole minutes — an eternity in the concert world.

There's a reason why "Champagne Problems" inspires such rapturous attention. It's one of Swift's most vividly written songs to date, with stunning lyrics like "Your Midas touch on the Chevy door / November flush and your flannel cure," and of course, the iconic expletive: "'She would've made such a lovely bride / What a shame she's fucked in the head,' they said."

"Don't Blame Me" is the highlight of the "Reputation" segment.

champagne problems tour

"Reputation" was created to be played live, and Swift pushes this to her full advantage during the Eras Tour. It's a fiery, full-throttle segment that's sure to thrill even the most casual fan.

But without "Don't Blame Me," the "Reputation" segment would've been just another collection of singles. It's the key ingredient, creating a seamless bridge between the lovesick pleas of "Delicate" and the campy drama of "Look What You Made Me Do." The high note that Swift hits on the bridge is an adrenaline rush every time.

"All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" is the emotional peak of the setlist.

champagne problems tour

"All Too Well" is the crown jewel of Swift's lyricism . Moreover, the extended version's release was a clear turning point in her path to world domination . So it only makes sense for the song to claim a crucial moment in the biggest tour of her career.

Just the fact that every night, a stadium full of fans is screaming every word to a 10-minute power ballad — that's an astonishing feat. But the performance is also crafted with intense love and care, designed to maximize catharsis.

As Swift sings about her tender autumn memories, a flurry of brown leaves is unleashed into the audience. Later, when she recalls the first fall of snow, white confetti begins to fall. It's pure, mesmeric magic.

"About halfway through 'All Too Well,' I lost it. Couldn't hold it together at all. Became an absolute mess. Couldn't stop crying," Tom Breihan wrote in a review for Stereogum .

"I couldn't even tell you why I was crying, exactly," he continued. "I'm not that personally invested in Taylor Swift's years-ago breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal . As far as I'm concerned, that's settled business. This was something else. Gratitude, maybe? A sort of sensory-overload flood? Just sheer and overwhelming respect of motherfucking craft? I don't know, but I was in it."

"The 1" is one of Swift's best songs and deserves to be performed.

champagne problems tour

After less than one month of performing on the Eras Tour, Swift swapped out "Invisible String" for "The 1" as the opener for her "Folklore" segment.

Whether that choice had anything to do with her split from Joe Alwyn, which would make headlines a week later , is simply irrelevant. It was the right call either way.

Fans are so invested, so immersed in her performance of "The 1," a tiny note change  is enough to elicit cheers and shrieks of delight. The song is a masterclass in blending simple, conversational lines with heart-breaking revelations about regret, butterfly effects, bus stops, and chosen families .

In fact, the entire ethos of the Eras Tour, which celebrates Swift's legacy as a heartbreak curator and musical shape-shifter, could be distilled into one of the song's killer stanzas: "If you never bleed, you're never gonna grow / And it's alright now / But we were something, don't you think so?"

"I Knew You Were Trouble" should've been swapped for a better "Red" track.

champagne problems tour

It's a crime that "Red (Taylor's Version)" is stuffed with songs that are begging to be played live — "State of Grace," "Red," "Holy Ground," and "The Very First Night," to name a few — and Swift chose to perform all the singles instead.

To be fair, "22" always has a cute moment with a fan in the crowd , and "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is still a fun sing-along. But the chaotic dubstep of "I Knew You Were Trouble" needs to be retired.

"'Tis the Damn Season" is a forgettable opener for the "Evermore" set.

champagne problems tour

Swift's witchy performance of "Willow," one of her many No. 1 hits , makes way more sense to introduce the "Evermore" segment on tour. "'Tis the Damn Season" is beautiful, but it doesn't make for a memorable performance.

Even Swift knows the song isn't essential. For every show with HAIM as an opening act, Swift swapped "'Tis the Damn Season" for their vengeful duet, "No Body, No Crime."

"The Last Great American Dynasty" is superfluous.

champagne problems tour

"The Last Great American Dynasty" isn't a bad song, but it is the worst song on "Folklore."

Swift's folk-pop masterpiece is blessed with one of the longest segments on the Eras Tour, for very good reason . But be honest: if you were going to cut a song, it would be this one.

"Bad Blood" is a bad song.

champagne problems tour

The "1989" segment is comprised entirely of singles. But while "Style," "Blank Space," and "Wildest Dreams" have stood the test of time, "Bad Blood" now feels dated and gratuitous.

It's one of the worst songs in Swift's catalog — the worst, according to some critics — and with all the pop hits in Swift's arsenal, especially from the "1989" era, there's no reason to include this one on the setlist.

Sure, the spicy music video had a moment back in 2015, but eight years later, we don't care about Swift's long-dormant feud with Katy Perry . We want "New Romantics."

The "Midnights" segment is too long, and "Bejeweled" is the worst offender.

champagne problems tour

"Midnights" claims a whopping seven songs on the Eras Tour setlist, and nearly every one is performed in its entirety. That's way too many songs for an iffy album that doesn't hold a candle to "1989," "Lover," "Folklore," and "Evermore" — or even to "Speak Now," which was allowed just one measly song for most of the US leg .

Of course, we all knew that Swift would make room in the show for "Bejeweled." It has a star-studded music video  and even sparked a viral dance trend . But that doesn't make the song any less annoying.

To make matters worse, "Bejeweled" has to follow Swift's show-stopping performance of "Vigilante Shit," the best choreography of the night. (If you're a Swiftie with TikTok, you know exactly what I'm talking about.) The spirit fingers are cringe-worthy in comparison.

champagne problems

Evermore (2020), table of contents, background and release.

«Joe and I really love sad songs. He started that one and came up with the melodic structure of it. I say it was a surprise that we started writing together, but in a way it wasn’t cause we had always bonded over music and had the same musical tastes. He’s always the person who’s showing me songs by artists and then they become my favorite songs. ‘champagne problems’ was one of my favorite bridges to write. I really love a bridge where you tell the full story in the bridge. You really shift gears in that bridge. I’m so excited to one day be in front of a crowd, when they all sing, ‘She would’ve made such a lovely bride, what a shame she’s fucked in the head’. Cause I know it’s so sad, but it’s those songs like ‘All Too Well’. Performing that song is one of the most joyful experiences I ever go through when I perform live, so when there’s a song like ‘champagne problems’ where you know it’s so sad…I love a sad song, you know?» Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's London Shows Set Records for Mobile Data Use Among Fans

Exclusive: The August and Champagne Problems moments saw mobile data use peak during the Wembley Eras Tour Shows.

champagne problems tour

Instagram was the most popular app among Swifties attending the Eras Tour at Wembley.

You'll know it if you've been to one of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour shows -- when you're standing in the stadium gasping, singing, cheering, crying and clapping, you feel like you're part of something special, historical... unprecedented even. No wonder then, that as the global superstar wrapped up the European leg of her tour, she was celebrating breaking records across the continent.

In London, Swift became the first solo artist to play eight shows at Wembley Stadium on the same tour. While I was at the show on Saturday night, just meters away from the stage, I had no idea she was breaking another record in my presence. Her Eras Tour show that night saw the most mobile data used at a standalone show at Wembley in history.

As is so often the case with Swift, she was breaking a record she herself had set (back in June). And to put it into perspective, the 5.58 terabytes that fans consumed would be enough to stream her entire music catalog 4,500 times, which would take more than 10 years. This makes Swift the most popular artist to have ever played at the UK's national stadium, according to data usage. Seven of the top 10 most popular events, again going by mobile data, to be held at Wembley are Eras Tour shows -- and that includes sporting events such as major soccer finals.

Wembley is the largest sports venue in the UK, and the second largest in Europe. Its usual capacity is around 90,000 people, but with pitch standing, around 92,000 people attended each Eras Tour show at the stadium. Still, there were many more thousands of people watching from home, thanks to some generous Swifties in attendance livestreaming from their phones, as well as posting pictures and updates in real time on social media.

If you're wondering what most people were using their phones for during the show, mobile provider EE shared with CNET that Instagram was the most popular app, accounting for 16% of total data used, followed by Snapchat (11%), TikTok (8%) and Facebook (8%). EE, one of the biggest UK mobile networks, sponsors Wembley and provides all the network infrastructure for the stadium.

Two of my own favorite moments from the show -- Swift's rendition of Champagne Problems on piano and her performance of August, which sees her twirling through an array of sunset hues like a woodland nymph -- saw the biggest spikes in data use.

Prior to the Eras Tour, the artist that generated the most data use among fans at Wembley was Harry Styles in 2023. Data use during one of his concerts hit 4.49TB. But Swift's last fives shows all beat that record, with the breakdown as follows:

  • Aug. 15: 5.16TB
  • Aug. 16: 5.18TB
  • Aug. 17: 5.58TB
  • Aug. 19: 4.6TB
  • Aug. 20: 5.581TB

In total, more than 1 million fans used more than 65TB across Swift's UK shows. That just goes to show the insatiable appetite for content about and around the Eras Tour. Following the grand finale of the European leg this week, Swift will return to play more shows in the US this October, before finally wrapping up the tour in Canada in December.

If you need your Taylor fix in the meantime, don't forget you can watch The Eras Tour Movie on Disney Plus anytime you like.

Tuscany Food & Wine

Tuscany food and wine week, experience tuscan food and wine like a local.

In many ways, Tuscany offers the best of Italy in one beautifully wrapped package. History, scenic vistas, small-town tradition, hearty cuisine, and fabulous local wine are all here for the taking. No matter when you visit, the seasons unfold in vibrant hues. From green hills, polka-dotted with poppies in springtime, to dancing sunflower fields in summer, to vines heavy with grapes in autumn, you can’t go wrong. Stroll through art-filled hill towns, soak in the picturesque views, and relish farm-to-table dining. Then unwind in your rustic apartment, where your stay promises to be tranquil and extraordinary.   Stay in a restored farmhouse, on a working farm, or a vineyard near Buonconvento or Montalcino, in the heart of wine country.

Day trip options include Siena, San Gimignano, the Chianti Valley, Montepulciano, Pienza, Volterra, Cortona, Florence, and more!

In this seven day experience – similar to our traditional UnTours, but with some additional food & wine-focused activities curated specifically for this special week – we will be able to walk through the history of the Tuscan cuisine, while enjoying some of the most important landmarks, through the eyes of our local UnGuides, who will make this tour a once in a lifetime experience.

What's included

Airport arrival and drive to tuscany.

champagne problems tour

Arriving at Florence Airport, you step off the plane and into a wave of sun-kissed autumn air, carrying with it the promise of Tuscany’s rolling hills. The airport itself is modern yet modest, a manageable size that quickly guides you through passport control and to the baggage claim area. Luggage in hand, you follow the signs for car rentals, weaving through the airport’s clean, minimalist design.

As you start the engine and drive out of the airport, the city of Florence sprawls out before you, a mix of Renaissance architecture and modern vibrancy. The GPS guides you through the outskirts of the city, where urban life begins to fade into the serene countryside.

The road to Tuscany is picturesque, with each turn revealing a new postcard-worthy scene. The landscape transforms from the city’s bustle to the gentle sway of cypress trees, olive groves, and vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see. The sun casts a golden hue over the fields, and you can’t help but lower the windows to let in the fragrant air, filled with the scent of wildflowers and earth.

As you drive deeper into Tuscany, the roads become narrower and more winding, taking you past charming villages with their terracotta rooftops and stone houses. The pace of life seems to slow, matching the rhythm of the landscape, inviting you to relax and take in the beauty of your surroundings. Eventually, you reach your destination, a well-kept, historic home-away-from-home in the heart of Tuscany. Benvenuto.

Truffle hunt through the Tuscan countryside

champagne problems tour

Join Geno and his beloved truffle-hunting dog, Willy, on a trek through the countryside to hunt the elusive Italian delicacy. This intimate and unique cultural experience is something that you’ll never forget.

The experience typically begins early in the morning when the scent of the truffles is strongest. Geno, Willy, and your group will move quietly through the forest, with the dog sniffing the ground intently. When the dog detects a truffle, it begins to dig. You’ll then carefully uncovers the truffle, ensuring it is not damaged in the process. This can be a patient and meticulous process, as truffles are delicate and can be easily bruised.

In Tuscany, the most prized truffle is the white truffle (Tuber magnatum pico), which is highly aromatic and sought after by chefs worldwide. The season for white truffles is typically from late September to December. Black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) are also found in Tuscany and have a longer season, from November to March.

Truffle hunting is not just about finding a valuable culinary ingredient; it is also about preserving a tradition that has been passed down through generations.

Traditional cooking class and wine tasting

champagne problems tour

The class begins with an introduction to the ingredients laid out on the wooden table: fresh vegetables, handmade pasta, local cheeses, and olive oil pressed from nearby groves. You’ll learn the secrets of Tuscan cooking knead dough, chop vegetables, and stir pots, all while the chef shares stories about Tuscan culinary traditions. The atmosphere is relaxed and interactive, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and enjoy the process. As the dishes come together, the kitchen fills with mouthwatering aromas, and you start to anticipate the feast to come.

Vineyard tour and tasting

champagne problems tour

Enjoy a private wine tour with your fellow UnTourists and maybe take a few bottles home to share with your friends and family at home.

A wine tasting in Tuscany is a truly enchanting experience that immerses you in the rich history and vibrant culture of one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions. Picture yourself in the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, where vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with cypress trees and rustic farmhouses.

The experience begins with a warm welcome at a family-run winery, where you’re greeted by the owners or knowledgeable staff who are passionate about their craft. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed, allowing you to feel at ease as you embark on your tasting journey.

You’ll start a tour of the vineyard, where you learn about the different grape varieties grown in the region. The guide will explain the vineyard’s history, the winemaking process, and the importance of the terroir – the unique combination of soil, climate, and topography that gives Tuscan wines their distinctive character.

As you move into the cellar, the cool, earthy scent of aging wine surrounds you. Here, you’ll see rows of oak barrels and perhaps some ancient, dusty bottles resting in the dim light. The guide might explain how the wines are aged, the role of oak in developing flavors, and the art of blending different wines to achieve the perfect balance.

The tasting itself is a sensory delight. Seated at a table with a breathtaking view of the countryside, you’re presented with a selection of wines, each poured into elegant glasses. The experience is not just about the wine but also about the connection to the land and the people who craft these wines with such care and tradition. As the tasting concludes, allow yourself linger a while, enjoying the serene landscape, perhaps purchasing a bottle or two to bring a piece of Tuscany back home with you.

Montalcino, Italy - Tuscany

Montalcino is a beautiful hill town, sporadically populated in Etruscan times and permanently settled around 1000 AD. The town was important in medieval times and its thirteenth-century walls are still largely intact. Today Montalcino is known for the Brunello wine made in its surrounding farmlands. Its center is pedestrian-friendly and walkable. Its narrow streets are lined with shops, good restaurants, lively cafés and wine bars. It hosts an open-air market on Fridays and offers a museum of sacred art. Visitors to the town’s fourteenth-century fortress can climb its tower for a spectacular view of the countryside or sample local wines in its basement cantina. The town offers banks, ATMs, coffee bars, a grocery store and a good bakery.

Staying in the countryside outside Montalcino puts you in the heart of the Tuscan wine belt, in the shadow of countless wineries and an easy drive to Chianti country. Traditional farm life continues in Montalcino and the many beautiful hill towns that surround it. Here, artisans sell pottery, small restaurants create traditional Tuscan meals, and old parish churches hide stunning frescoes.

Montalcino is about 40 minutes south of Siena and an 90 minutes south of Florence. Other day trips include the historic hill towns of San Gimignano, Pienza, Montepulciano, and San Galgano; the Etruscan sites of Volterra, Chiusi, and Cortona; the natural beauty of Mt. Amiata and the coast; and the monasteries of Monte Oliveto and Sant’Antimo.
