Cozumel is proof that Mexico can do ‘island flavor’ with the best of the Caribbean. It may not be the biggest island in the sea, but Cozumel offers a huge variety of things to do, see, taste and explore. This island just happens to be perched atop a coral reef, which promises hours of snorkeling or scuba diving fun. Cruises to Cozumel dock at the island’s heart — just minutes from San Miguel’s seafront shops and the white sand beach at Chankanaab National Park. Drift among star corals and sea fans on a Cozumel diving excursion or simply kick back on the beach beneath your own palm palapa as the turquoise waves roll in. With non-stop zip line action, ancient discoveries at the nearby Mayan ruins, or time spent with your toes in the sand, a cruise to Cozumel may just top your best vacations list… before you even get home.

  • Cruise to Cozumel for a scuba diving adventure along the Great Mesoamerican Reef.
  • Enjoy a leisurely day of snorkeling with iridescent fish at Chankanaab National Park.
  • Swim with the flippy guys at Dolphinaris.

Cool Cruiser

Thanks to all the help I received on my first thread I figured I might as well just ask more experienced cruisers another question...For those who have visited these destinations-what would be your favorite or most memorable experience at each/or any of these destinations? I would find your memories very interesting and helpful in planning my trip. I am taking my sister on her first cruise and I want this trip to be as well thought out and fun as possible. Any tips or advice thrown in for good measure would be great as well!! I can google and research (I have already beat that horse), but it would be lovely to hear from folks who have experienced it! Thanks in advance!:)

Been to Cozumel 3x. DH and I went on our honeymoon. That's a memory all by itself. The next time, we went to Chankanaab (spelling?) Park, and swam with dolphins. It was magical.

We went to Grand Cayman last year, and went horseback riding on the beach. It was romantic, fun and serene. Beautiful views.

We did Jamaica this year, and we did Dunns River Falls and River rafting. It was great!!!

We booked all our tours ourselves and saved some money. We also bring our own snorkel equipment and snorkel at ports when we have extra time.

I mentioned in the other thread what I did the only times I've been to Jamaica (Doctors Cave Beach) & Grand Cayman (Captain Marvin's stingrays & snorkel, followed by a few hours at 7-Mile Beach on our own).

I've been to Cozumel several times. I loved Chankanaab Park!!! We did the Royal Dolphin Swim, which was totally spectacular!!!!! Unfortunately, they're not letting Carnival cruisers book with them directly anymore. You have to book it through Carnival now, which means it's a whole lot more $$$$$$$. But you can still just go to the park on your own and not do a dolphin swim (or try to get in on a dolphin program if they don't realize you're a cruiser;), if there are openings). The park is nice, and it has good snorkeling right off the shore, which is a very rocky shoreline, but it's still a nice sandy beach, and they run sea lion shows. Around $20pp admission (admission included for anyone doing a dolphin program). That was my favorite memory from Cozumel. I also liked Paradise Beach, which can be cheaper. Free admission, $2 beach chair, $12 to use the water "toys", which are so much fun. The only good snorkeling is at the end of the pier, where plenty of fish gather. You can see pics of both these places in my Dream (Chankanaab) & Triumph (Paradise Beach) reviews. The links are in my signature.

Cozumel - San Francisco Beach

Grand Cayman - Captain Marvin's

Montego Bay - Just shopped at the pier

COZUMEL: Shopped at pier (1st time)

Took Carnival tour downtown, walked around and shopped. Had some great nachos at Panchos Backyard. (2nd time)

JAMAICA: You didn't mention what part

Montego Bay: We did an all inclusive/it had a casino there to.

Grand Cayman: Snorkeling and Stingrays (Bought on set on cruise)

When in Jamacia, do a ship sponsered tour, or stay with a group of people. Jamacia is NOT one of my favorite places. Be very careful.

FallingSilver02

Cozumel - Nachi Cocom - $50 all inclusive beach that limits it to 100 guests a day... so nice to not have people crowding you and kicking sand all over your things! Drinks are delish and plentiful, as is the food.

Jamaica (Ocho Rios) - Dunns River Falls! Gorgeous and a great workout! We also did the Bob Marley tour which I did not think was worth it. BF is a big Marley fan and was disappointed.

Grand Cayman - Wanted to do Stingray City but it was too windy and the tour was canceled while we were there. Went to 7 mile beach instead and did some shopping. Trying for Stingray City again this year though!

Agreed. Jamaica is beautiful when you are with the right company. We went with a highly recommended tour guide (both on CC and TripAdvisor) and there were still points where I felt a little unsafe. Just not a big fan of aggressive vendors. :o

Hands down, swimming with the sting rays. I'm not an animal person and I held one, even kissed it for good luck. Such gentle creatures, it was an awesome experience! Port shopping there is excellent as well!:D

Cozumel: Have been there twice, went snorkling and did submarine, both fun. My favorite part of Cozumel, though, is just shopping downtown and by the dock, and walking along the "main drag" -- there is a restaurant at the end that has the best Margaritas on the planet (and they will kick your butt!)

Jamaica -- have been to Ocho Rios twice. Loved climbing Dunn's River Falls. Also had fun just sitting at Margaritaville which is literally right on the beach.

Grand Cayman -- also there twice. Stingrays are awesome, but my favorite is the turtle rescue/farm

booboo925

Cozumel - snorkeling...had a blast! My then 6 year old daughter was struggling a bit with the swimming and our guide brought her a tow rope and he dragged her around on it. Then (he was trying to be nice) he swam down and brought up an octupus...very cool until it squirted at which point my daughter went up and over about 30 people trying to get back to shore. She did not like that octopus! We then had tacos and beer (I had beer, she had orange soda) on the beach...It is one of our favorite memories from our cruises!

Jamaica - we did river rafting on the Bonnie Brae. It was so much fun - our boat captain Jeffrey was fantastic - I am looking at a picture of my daughter and Jeffrey as I type...She had a blast - she wanted to race the other rafts down the river, and even had Jeffrey and one of the other Captains duel with their poles like they were light sabers. SO MUCH FUN!

Grand Cayman - swam with the Stingrays which was great fun, and we had a great time doing that. Then we went back to the ship after walking the downtown for a few minutes. GC is my least favorite port, but hey - if I am there I know I am on a cruise!

Have fun with whatever you choose! :D

Yazoo cruiser

Been on over 60 cruises and without a doubt my favorite has been climbing Dunn's river falls in Jamaica. Absolutely beautiful, have to be in fairly good shape stepping from rock to rock climbing the falls, but we were in our 50's and had no problem. Second favorite of all we have done is swimming with the stingrays in Grand Cayman. A litle scary when you first get in the water, but an exciting excursion. As far as Cozumel, just about any beach is fine with us. HAVE A GREAT CRUISE.

My favorite itnerary!

Cozumel, the first time I went parasailing....peaceful and beautiful; Nachi Cocom....unbelievable, both times; last minute snorkeling excursion....unbelievalbe amount of beautiful fish.

Jamaica, the first time I went ziplining. I thought Jamaica was beautiful (just a little dirty).

Grand Cayman, Stingray City with Nativeway.....still probably my favorite excursion ever and to see RumPoint Beach was an aaaaahhhhh moment.

Doing it all again in Jan 2012 with DS. Can't wait to see all of this thru his eyes.

Cozumel - Chankanaab, Royal Dolphin Swim took a taxi and paid at the park.

Jamiaca - Jungle River Tubing booked through Carinval. 1 of the top 10 cruise ship excursions according to TLC. :D

Grand Caymen - Captain Marvin's stingray snorkle adventure booked online.

Cozumel: Enjoy this stop everytime

1) Rent a jeep and tour ruins then hung out at Paradise Beach, the kids enjoyed and now they have a pool, which looks really nice.

2) Taxi to Playa Palancar beach, more peaceful, quiet beach, practically had the place to ourselves, its beautiful there. Took their snorkeling tour, great food, great day. (we did this beach twice, we prefer without the kids, only snorkeled once).

Jamaica: Booked a tour with Phil Lafayette, who's a hoot, lots of fun. We did Dun Rivers Falls, tubing, sightseeing and lunch at a wonderful restuarant that sits on the side of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Perfect day.

Grand Cayman: Swim with the stingrays with Captain Marvin.

My first trip to Cozumel, in 2000, hubby and I had our first "dolphin encounter" at Chankanaab Park. I loved it, although the next day was just the BEST (much better) encounter in Roatan (Honduras). On another trip to Cozumel, we had a "helmut dive" at the same Chankanaab park. It was just OK. On another trip to Cozumel, in 2008, we did a "Parasail" thing. It was fabulous, but not sure I'd do it again. I like new adventures. Recently on a trip to Cozumel with my mom, we took an organized tour (Carnival excursion) of discovering Cozumel, the "best of", "shopping and Highlights tour" of Cozumel. This was quite interesting too, we enjoyed it very much, and feel like we saw all the best that Cozumel has to offer.

I have been to Jamaica twice. The first trip to Montego Bay took us to Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios- where we zip linned (for the first time), and rode the bobsled, with lunch included (Carnival Excurstion). We enjoyed this very much. Recently while cruising with my mother, we went to Mystic Mountain (with lunch), and a trip to Dunns Falls (another Carnival Excursion). We enjoyed it, but the Falls is not something I want to do again. We only watched from the sidelines. At least I can say "been there and done that".

The first trip to Grand Cayman (with a Carnival Excursion) took us to swim with the sting rays. This was quite entertaining and exciting. I loved it! We also saw Grand Caymen (by bus) with a trip to the turtle farm and the little tourist town they like to call "Hell". It was OK.

Due to a lack of options, took the same tour (minus the stingrays) with my mom recentlly. I liked the stop at one of the Tortuga stores for Tortuga Rum Cake (yummy). I have no desire to see turtles or "Hell" again.

This is just what we've done. I'll be looking for new things to do, next time.....

Leaving TOMORROW :D on Liberty for these three ports!

Cozumel - Nachi Cocum beach club, and hit the bars in Cozumel later on.

Cayman - Stingray City and Island tour

Jamaica - Mystic Mountain, canopy and bobsled adventure.

Id second Nativeway on Grand Cayman...they take you to Rum Point, really good lunch and its so relaxing. This in addition to the Stingrays and Snorkeling.

Dolphinaris in Cozumel was THE BEST! Wear a one piece suit!

Grits53

Cozumel has so many fun and interesting things to do that it's hard to recommend just one. It really depends on what you like to do. If you go to Chankanaab Park, you can swim with dolphins or manatees, and you can walk down their beach just a little way to a great snorkel area (snorkel equipment available for rent). For our past 3 cruises and again on our next cruise, we have been going to Nachi Cocom, which is an all inclusive beach club. For $49, you get the use of their beach and facilities, along with all you can drink...alcohol & non-alcohol....and a huge lunch. They also offer other activities for extra charge, like parasailing, jet ski, massage, and snorkel tours by boat. We love Nachi! Another of our favorite excursions at Cozumel is the Carnival jeep tour that takes you to Punta Sur at the end of the island for snorkeling and lunch. That was a good one.

It would be a shame to visit Grand Cayman and NOT swim with the stingrays! You really should do that. I agree with snorkeling from Eden Rock. We have done that and it was awesome! But for my first visit, I would definitely go to Stingray City. Interacting with those huge, gentle creatures of the wild is not to be missed!

One of my favorite excursions in Montego Bay is the Chukka Horseback Ride & Swim. First, you take a trail ride through the hillside, which is very relaxing and interesting. Then they take the saddles off the horses and put "water pads" on them for your swim. The horses actually swim and kind of jump the waves. It is so much fun and very safe. If you choose to take an excursion that involves traveling a long distance in Jamaica, the trip there and back will be half the adventure. Riding in a tour bus on Jamaican highways is like a thrill ride in an amusement park.... I'm just sayin! LOL!

webzila

Question for anyone who has been on the Horseback Riding excursion in Jamaica. Do you get wet on that? The picture shows horses in the water, so do you need to bring extra shoes, clothes, towels? Just wondering.

You are riding the horse as the horse is swimming, so yes, you get wet. They give you time to change into your swimsuit after the trail ride. Or you can wear swimsuit under clothes and take clothes off for the swim. They have restrooms for changing clothes. Below is a pic of my husband doing the swim.

These are 3 of my favorite ports!

Cozumel -we love Playa Mia. Good food, plentiful beverages, great place for a beach day. The Carnival excursion transportation is a big comfortable air-conditioned bus.

Grand Cayman - We did the Atlantis submarine. Fascinating! Would do it again. Doing a beach day at 7 Mile beach plus some exploring in town next trip.

Jamaica - Last time we did the Beach Break that includes food & drinks. Might do it again if we can combine it with Mystic Mountain.

Thanks for the info!

Is the swim optional? :)

For context, we really like a laid back/inexpensive port like Amber Cove and Grand Turk..do these ports offer anything like this?

Great Review

All ports are the same, just different locations on the map….

Do you want to just get off of the ship and go to a beach? If so, I'd put Grand Cayman at the top of your list even though it is a tender port.

Amber Cove is a private area owned by a cruise line. Grand Turk isn't but there is a private area adjacent the cruise docks so it's basically like a private destination. Ocho Rios, Cozumel and Grand Cayman are none of those things. But typical excursions available at each include beaches and private beaches so that quiet experience CAN be had if that's what you're seeking.

Yes, pretty much thats what we like for carib cruises..just easy cheap beach day..thanks good to know this is an option at grand cayman!

Agree 100% in the Caribbean. None of them really offer anything different or exciting. How many times can you snorkel or asked to get your hair braided?  Just find a beach or stay on the empty ship.

Thanks guys, I meant more so the ease of Amber Cove and Gran Turk where you dont really have to leave the port area/can spend the day there fairly inexpensive:)

Ah… Taino Bay has the lazy river that is free to access. They have some restaurants and bars that are what I would call decent prices.

Having done this itinerary several times, we head to Royal Palms Beach Club in Grand Cayman where we rent a cabana (we just grab a van taxi at the port along w/ 8 of our new "best friends"), in Ocho Rios you can walk off the ship to Margarittaville beach club where we do the VIP pkg which includes beach chairs, a beach side safe for valuables and a round of margaritas. Cozumel, it's Mr Sanchos all the way! VIP pkg, of course (unlimited drinks and food)!

We love this intin so much, we're doing it again in March 2024. It's a great beach day schedule, if that's what you're looking for like we do!

Oops, I think I'm finding Royal Palms is permanently closed now...my bad. Researching another beach club...  🫣

Looks like Coral Beach Club is still open??

Thanks, this is exactly what we're looking for!  Is the one in Ocho Rios the one iwth the trampoline in the water?

What port is this in?

Puerto Plata

Yup, that's the one! Takes a LOT more energy to get up there out of the water than you'd think! Wore my butt out!...and I work out daily and got my butt whipped climbing that ladder onto the trampoline LOL

you can check out my recent review of this same itinerary (click link in signature).

Basically, the cheapest was Ocho Rios. We went to a public beach next to port. It exceeded my very low expectations in a very pleasant way.

We did an MSC excursion in Grand Cayman (never again through MSC).

Cozumel turned out to be very expensive this time, even though we went to Playa Palancar before. It cost just about $200 total for the 5 of us ($45 taxi each way, $20 pp for the beach access/chaises, plus 3 drinks). Last time we were here, they didn't charge $20 pp. The fee doesn't even include a welcome drink like it did in other ports.

P.S. You will find a ton of information if you check out the Ports of Call subforum:  https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/456-caribbean/
