Uganda is a fast-growing African safari destination that’s lately getting significant attention from the leisure travel world. Uganda has treasures no other place on earth can duplicate—an extraordinary legacy of the still primitive, still wild, yet accessible on a wide scale.

That legacy includes not only the mountain gorillas , big game , small game, birdlife , other fascinating life forms, and seeing the descent, unpretentious, friendly local people. It is a tremendous assemblage of wildlife, the spectacle, the chief drawing card for Uganda safari trips, and all happening on open plains, mountains, forests, and one to be concerned about the best time to visit this extraordinary legacy, it’s pretty understandable.

Uganda is part of the economically integrated East African Community (EAC), including pioneer safari destinations like Kenya, Tanzania, and fast-growing Rwanda. All these destinations share almost the same weather patterns, but as you move west into the higher altitudes, the weather gets cooler and wet in the mountains.

Carefully considering the weather patterns, altitudes of your selected destinations, and the activities that will engage you, you can get the best time for your Uganda Visit.

Let’s take a look month-by-month by weather and climate details.

Best Time Time To Go By Weather & Travel Seasons

Like Kenya, DR Congo, and ten other countries, Uganda straddle the equator, which means a slight annual fluctuation in temperatures. The hottest average temperature rarely exceeds 29° Celcius (84° Fahrenheit) in the capital, Kampala , and environs.

However, as you head towards the northern regions of the country, the hottest day time temperatures average between 24-33° Celsius (52-91° Fahrenheit) with peaks up to 40° Celcius (104° Fahrenheit) in the extreme north towards Kidepo National Park. And this usually during January and February.

Uganda’s tropical climate primarily has two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

The Dry season in northern Uganda ranges from December through February and Wet season from March through to November. This period encompasses Murchison Falls NP , Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Kidepo NP , and Pian Upe Game Reserve.

Sandwiched between the Rwenzori mountains, Virunga Massif, and the massive Lake Victoria, the southwestern region, where we find almost all significant parks, has two wet seasons. The first runs from mid-September through to November, and the second runs from March to May. But what you should note as you visit this region is that it can rain at any time of the day. 

The Dry Season: June to August & December to February

Average temperatures during the dry season in Uganda get as low as 16° Celcius (61° Fahrenheit) in the morning and as high as 27° Celcius (81° Fahrenheit) in the afternoon. In higher altitudes, like where the gorillas are found, it gets very chilly at 1,300 m (4,265 ft). 

June, July & August

June and July are the driest months in the southwestern region but expect to see some occasional rains because the area is mostly covered with rainforests. Unlike the southwest, these months form part of the Wet season in the northern regions. But if you’re heading to the far north, to Pian Upe or Kidepo Valley, the region is semi-arid and can experience droughts during this period.

December, January & February

Compared to June and July, most of the southwest region gets a little more rainfall in December, January, and February. But the north is clearly dry with little or no rain.

Should you travel in the dry season?

In general, the best time to visit Uganda on safari is during the two dry seasons of December to January and June to August. The dry season is the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda because the forest floors are less damp, trails are passable, and you’re sure you and your photography equipment will not get drenched in the torrential downpours. However, it would be best if you didn’t rule out rain because you’re hiking in a rainforest.

The dry season is also the best time to visit Uganda’s wildlife savannah reserves, when the skies are clear, less rain, more sunshine, and vegetation are less. The water holes are practically an animal magnet, and the animals gather around main water sources, making wildlife easier to spot. It is also the best time to take that boat launch safari on Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth NP and on Victoria Nile in Murchison Falls NP.

The high or peak travel season in Uganda is usually the two dry seasons of June to September and December to January. Unlike Kenya and Tanzania, the savannah parks in Uganda during this time don’t feel as crowded, and you can almost privately enjoy vast savannah plains to yourself.

Because the best time to see mountain gorillas in Uganda is during the two dry seasons, gorilla trekking permits become scarce. We advise trekkers to book the gorilla permit months in advance; at least 4-12 months earlier, to avoid disappointments. 

Uganda Wildlife Authority issues the gorilla permit for USD 700 per person and allows only eight people to visit each gorilla group. Uganda has 20 gorilla groups available for tourism and 2 more available for habituation experience . Therefore Uganda offers only 160 gorilla permits and 8 habituation permits per day. That’s a small number for an activity that gets heated attention, small enough to make you want to book the permit months ahead of your trip date.

Wet season: March to May and September to November

Average temperatures during the wet season in Uganda get as low as 16° Celcius (61° Fahrenheit) in the morning and as high as 28° Celcius (82° Fahrenheit) in the afternoon. In the gorilla mountains at higher altitudes, it gets chilly and warmer in the north.

The wet season in Uganda is during two periods of March to May and September to November.

March, April & May 

The wet season period of March to May has more downpour throughout the country and peaking in April in the southern region.

From March to May is not the best time to visit Uganda because rain can make navigating some trails difficult. But it does not rain throughout time, and some days have warm sunshine as well.

September, October & November

These months are commonly referred to as the months of short rains and are comparable to March, April, and May, but, on average, there is a bit less rain.

Should you travel in the wet season?

It’s low season (off-peak) in Uganda during Wet season. Hotels, Camps, and lodges charge lower rates because there’s less travel traffic. If you don’t mind a downpour once a day and are looking to travel on a budget , this is the best time to visit Uganda.

During the wet seasons is when the Pearl of Africa is at its most beautiful. Generally, the green vegetation illuminates the whole country showing off the most spectacular landscape features. Go southwest of the country, the highlands flash out enchanting emerald vegetation, and the snow-capped Rwenzori mountains of the moon decorate the western and southern borders. Photography is at its best, especially when the sun shines over the afternoons.

During the wet seasons, vegetation overgrows and animals spread all over the savannah plains like little dots on a map. Although wildlife in the savannah reserves is more challenging to spot during wet season, you’ll still see plenty of newborns and witness concomitant gut-wrenching thrills when hungry predators battle with vigilant mothers or snatch the helpless young.

Some of the roads get very bad, bridges are washed away by heavy rains, and cars often get stuck, especially in the gorilla mountains where roads are not yet paved with tarmac. The rainforest trails become damp, slippery, and challenging to hike.

For some savvy travelers with a thrill of adventure, November is the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda because this is when the mountain gorillas don’t forage too far from the trailheads. The gorillas can find food easily and prefer to stay in lower altitudes to avoid the freezing temperatures up. In other words, gorilla trekking is easier in November, ignoring that it could be raining.

It’s important to note that you won’t be able to change your expensive gorilla permit if it pours with rain and you chose not to trek. The UWA officials stick to departure times and go as scheduled. 

No matter your preferences, it is apparent that Uganda’s wilderness is extremely variable, making it difficult to choose the best time to visit the Pearl of Africa.

Uganda Climate Guide: How’s the Weather?

The Uganda climate is one of the country’s many perks. When planning your trip to Uganda, you won’t have to worry about extreme cold and hot seasons because this country features a warm, sunny climate most of the year.

• Average temperatures in Uganda range from 68 to 77°F (21 to 25°C)
• Annual rainfall between 35 and 60 inches (900 to 1500 mm)

While temperatures may vary little throughout the year, the country does experience wet and dry seasons , which are discussed in this article. However, you will learn that even the wet seasons offer some benefits for travel.

Is Uganda on the Equator?

Yes. Uganda is located at 0°0′N 29°43′E. And it is one of just 11 countries on the equator.

The full list of equatorial countries includes São Tomé and Príncipe, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Indonesia, Ecuador , Colombia, and Brazil.

Uganda Climate: At a Glance

Uganda experiences a tropical climate where you will see temperatures generally ranging from 21-25°C (68-77 °F) during the day and 12 to 16°C (54-61°F) at night, although much of this can vary between different parts of the country.

Due to its location along the equator as well as a wide expanse of elevated terrain throughout much of the country, Uganda features a temperate climate throughout the year, which adds just another great reason among many for you to visit. You won’t need to worry about extreme temperature fluctuations as you do if you are from North America.

Weather in Uganda is generally warm throughout the year, but you will find some months more ideal than others due to rainfall, which is discussed further in this article.

The hottest months in Uganda are January and February when the daily high temperatures rise to the upper 80s (lower 30s Celsius) and sometimes lower 90s (upper 30s Celsius.)

The coldest months in Uganda are June and July with temperature highs reaching the low 80s (upper 20s Celsius). Year-round, nighttime temperatures hover in the lower 60s (15 to 19 degrees Celsius) If you are traveling from a region that features bitter cold winters, you may find the Uganda climate much more favorable.

Seasons in Uganda: Dry and Wet

Uganda climate does feature two major seasonal changes that consist of the dry and wet seasons. The dry seasons are from December to February and June to August. This is the busiest tourist season and the most popular time for gorilla trekking , game drives, and wildlife viewing because the animals are often out searching for water, and there is less high grass to obstruct your view.

The wet months are generally from March to May and September to November, although you may see a more continuous rain pattern in the northern part of the country between April and November near places such as Kidepo Valley and Murchison Falls . Some people like to visit during the wet months because the landscape is lush and green, and there is ample opportunity to see a diversity of birds. Lodging and trekking rates are also reduced during the wet months, but you should be aware that heavy rains can make some roads difficult for traveling.

Rain in Uganda: The Long and Short of it All

Depending on where you are traveling from, you may find that the Uganda climate is unique in that it features two rainy seasons that are better known as the long and short rains.

A visit during the wet season may present you with an opportunity to witness one of the country’s natural wonders. The frequent downpours during the wet season are often accompanied by thunderstorms. Occurring mostly in the late evenings, these thunderstorms are known for their displays of lightning that are beautiful and mesmerizing to observe.

Throughout Uganda, January and February are the months with the least rainfall. In the southern region around Kampala and Rwenzori, the months of June, July and August also receive little rainfall, but the northern region does experience more rainfall throughout this period.

Some parts of Uganda, such as the southwest near the Rwanda and North Kivu borders and the Kidepo Valley National Park in the northeast, receive the least rainfall of all.

The wettest areas of Uganda tend to be around Lake Victoria and the north-central part of the country, especially the Gulu District.

Best Time to Visit Uganda: Month by Month

January to february.

The period between January and February is one of the two best times to visit Uganda because this is considered a dry season with little to no rainfall. This is a popular time for trekking mountain gorillas and chimpanzees as well as birdwatching and viewing a variety of wildlife.

March to May

March to May is where the Uganda climate changes to one of the wet seasons. Some rains can be heavy downpours, causing flooding and road inaccessibility. However, if you don’t mind the rain, you could save money during this time with reduced rates for costs of gorilla trekking permits and accommodations. You will also appreciate the lush scenery and abundance of migratory birds during this period.

June to August

Another dry season, this period is another of the best times to visit for wildlife viewing. It is possible that you could see some rain during these months, but it most likely will not ruin your itinerary.

September to October

While you can expect rainfall during these months, you should still be able to enjoy excellent opportunities to view wildlife.

November is when you may see heavy rain showers turning the landscape green again. This is another good time to see migratory birds and take advantage of reduced gorilla trekking permits.

December is when you will find the rains slacking off and temperatures rising along with trekking rates. If you can’t stand the heat, December may present a better month to visit than January and February.

What Clothing to Pack for Uganda

If you want to know what to pack when visiting Uganda, the best thing to keep in mind is that the Uganda climate features hot days and cool nights. Therefore, you will want to wear something light and comfortable in the daytime when it is warmer, and when the temperatures drop at night, you may need a light sweater or jacket.

No matter which season you visit, it is best to bring a light raincoat or umbrella because you never know when it may rain, especially if you are visiting near the Lake Victoria area. If you plan to visit the mountains of Uganda where the temperatures are much cooler, you will want warm clothing and a heavy coat as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves.

Thanks for the information regarding weather in Uganda. It’s very helpful. I am doing a gorilla trek in Bwindi this November (2019) – the trek is November 3-7. However, I’ve not yet booked my flights as I wan’t to avoid hard rains. I plan to be in Uganda (and would like to see Rwanda as well) for a month. Can’t decide if it’s best, weather-wise, to go early/mid Oct – Nov or begin the trip early Nov. Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

Learn More About Uganda’s Tropical Climate

Travel in Uganda is possible throughout the year, but the dry months are considered the best time to travel to the country. These months are also best for gorilla trekking. Although Uganda’s climate can be generally described as tropical, it still differs in different parts of the country, and the temperatures in the higher regions of Mount Elgon and the Ruwenzori Range can drop well below freezing.

Best Time To Visit Uganda by Season

In most regions of Uganda, you can expect an average of 1,000 to 2,000 millimeters of rainfall, but the rainy season and its duration may vary within the different regions. In general, it can be said that long rains occur from April to June and shorter rainfall can be expected between October and December. During this time it seldom rains all day and brief, strong showers are followed by mostly sunny weather. In the Lake Victoria basin, higher humidity with showers almost all year round can be expected due to the high water evaporation of up to 75-80%. Humidity is significantly lower in the remaining part of the country. The dry season lasts from June to October and from December to March.

• Short rainy season:  October – December
• Drying time:  June – October, December – March.

What to Pack

It is advisable to pack casual and comfortable clothes for your  Uganda wildlife safari . Evenings and early mornings can be chilly so warm sweaters are recommended. Flat, comfortable sports or trekking shoes are most suitable for walking should you intend to join any walking safaris. We recommend you bring warm clothes, including a fleece or a light woolen sweater and socks, apart from typical safari gear. During the day it can get quite hot, so don’t forget your sunglasses and a high SPF sunscreen, as well as a sun hat with a small brim. Some specialist trips, i.e. mountain climbing, require extra items of clothing and footwear. Many hotels, lodges and camps have swimming pools so you are advised to bring swimsuits. Due to limited space in the vehicle and in light aircraft, we advise you to keep your luggage to the minimum. We suggest you pack your luggage into a small bag of no more than 15 kgs – the luggage limit for local flights issued by the airlines. Almost all safari lodges and camps provide same-day laundry service.

When planning a trip to Africa, choosing the best time to visit Uganda and its surroundings is important. Guests should be aware of the differences in climate, availability, activities and pricing when choosing between the various months and seasons.

Best time to go to Uganda: Regions and months

The best time to visit Uganda is during its two dry seasons: between December and February, and between June and August, when conditions are particularly good for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

Visitors should be aware of entry requirements including Uganda vaccine and Uganda visa restrictions.

Game spotting on a Uganda safari is also good at this time, as well as between February and March. The best months for visiting Uganda are, in general, June to September, as there’s little rain and the days are a bit cooler.

The eastern portion of the country is a little drier than the rest. This area doesn’t tend to be visited quite as much by tourists, though it has many gems to offer like impressive game parks, Sipi Falls, coffee farms, and Mt Elgon National Park.

The southern portion of Uganda contains the capital city of Kampala, Entebbe International Airport, beautiful Lake Victoria, the Victorian source of the White Nile at Jinja, and the incomparable Lake Bunyonyi.

There are many fantastic game parks in the south and west of the country including Murchison Falls, Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth.

Meanwhile the southwestern border region is mountainous and covered in misty jungle including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the Virunga Mountains, and the Rwenzori Mountains.

Uganda wildlife viewing

Visitors can go gorilla trekking in Uganda at any time of the year. Permits are sold for gorilla trekking in both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park all year round.

However, gorilla trekking in Uganda’s wet seasons can be a very muddy and slippery experience, so it is advised to opt for one of the dry seasons if possible.

It’s worth pointing out that the forests where mountain gorillas live are never actually dry, even in the so-called dry season. Both Bwindi and Mgahinga experience rain and mist to some degree throughout the year, and they’re always wet..

The best time to see the Big-five is during the dry season and on an early morning or an evening game drive. This is during the months of December to February and June to mid-October when there is not too much rain, and the roads that lead to the national parks are not slippery.

Uganda generally has two wet seasons and two dry seasons, with dry seasons being from December to February and June to August.

Wet seasons are from March to May and September to November. March to May is wetter and warmer, while December to February is hotter and drier and it can sometimes get as hot as 96.8°F (36C).

Uganda lies on the Equator and has a warm subtropical climate. Daytime temperatures average between 25 and 29°C (77 and 84°F).

Night-time temperatures frequently drop below 20°C (68ºF), offering a nice reprieve on hot days. Humidity is pretty much always high, so don’t forget your Mitchum.

Outdoor activities

Uganda has some of the most beautiful landscapes in Africa or perhaps even the world. It’s hard to explain what makes its mountainous areas so inspiring and mesmerizing, but many would say that the country’s biggest asset is its wide-open spaces.

Volcano hikes

Straddling the Kenyan border, freestanding Mount Elgon is the centerpiece of the eponymous national park on both sides of the border. At 4,321m, it is the second-highest massif in Uganda, and it boasts the largest base of any extinct volcano in the world.

This massive extinct volcano, topped by an immense collapsed caldera, is a hiker’s paradise and far more budget-friendly than East Africa’s other major mountains. Additionally, all three of the volcanic Virunga peaks protected within Mgahinga can be tackled on guided day hikes.

White water rafting on the Nile

The Nile is considered one of the safest and yet wildest grade 5 whitewater rapids globally, perfect for adrenaline junkies and learners to face the mighty rapids. The trips include huge rapids and beautiful scenery, with time to relax and swim on calmer stretches.

Grade 4 and 5 rapids are usually challenging, and the guide will explain to you about the planned route through, for you to choose if you would prefer to join the safety boat or, where possible, walk around and then rejoin the raft.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best place in Uganda to track mountain gorillas. Bwindi NP protects around 40% of the world’s mountain gorilla population and has several habituated groups.

The forest is also a bird-watcher’s paradise with 350 species recorded, including many Albertine Rift endemics. Another popular park is the superb Kibale National Park , famous for its unique biophysical environment and scenery.

Murchison Falls National Park

Excellent wildlife viewing with four of the big five seen here. Huge herds of elephant and buffalo are common, as are lions. The Victoria Nile bisects the park and boat trips to Murchison Falls are spectacular. Carrying a small amount of local Uganda currency can be useful when paying for refreshments.

Boat cruise

The River Nile  can be explored with a 2-hour riverboat cruise which usually starts from the newly formed Bujagali Lake, between Owens Falls Dam and the Bujagali Dam. The spot is at the Source of the Nile, in Jinja. You will be able to see beautiful scenery, birdlife, and animals.

You can enjoy lunch cruises or even a breathtaking sunset cruise offered by Nile River Explorers, Noah’s Ark, and Nile River Camp. At Murchison Falls National Park, the launch trip upstream from Paraa to Murchison Falls’ foot presents a fantastic display of wildlife and birdlife.

Bungee jumping

Challenge your fear of heights by touching the source of the Nile from free-falling from a tall structure 44m into the Nile is not for the faint of heart. It is an unforgettable thrilling activity that will get your adrenaline pumping.

3km upstream from Bujagali Falls, the Nile river and forest canopy views are amazing. You can either use the ankle tie or the full-body harness. Adrift specializes in tandem jumps, water touches, and full-moon jumps at most times, including at night.

Horse-back riding

Horseback riding is an exciting activity to explore the tranquility of nature, wildlife, and birds. This experience can be suitable for all ages, including children and aged persons. You can enjoy this experience either in the East at Jinja or in the West at Lake Mburo National Park.

Uganda has a very pleasant climate. It does not get as hot and humid as the coastal regions of Kenya and Tanzania, and it never gets very cold either. The warmest regions in Uganda are located around Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and everything further north (Karamoja and Kidepo). If you can't stand the heat, we recommend you to avoid these places, particularly in January and February.

The cooler regions are located at higher altitudes - around Mount Elgon, Rwenzori Mountains and Lake Bunyonyi. Besides that, the chimpanzee and gorilla trekking locations , in Kibale Forest and Bwindi, are also typically known as the cooler regions of Uganda, where the forest provides a lot of shade. We recommend you bring a warm jumper or jacket when staying in these areas. 

Do you want to discover Uganda with fewer tourists? Then go in April - May or November . Due to fewer crowds, some lodges will offer low season rates. During these times you can expect more rainfall, particularly in Entebbe, Jinja, Sipi Falls, and the Southwestern part of Uganda . However, rain patterns are unpredictable and can come earlier or later than expected. Rains can be heavy, but are typically short, followed by bright sunshine. Take advantage of this time of the year to enjoy fifty shades of green, the scent of lovely flowers, and some good off-road driving in muddy patches. Sidenote: this is not a good time of the year to summit the peaks of Mount Elgon or the Rwenzori mountains. 

December to February are considered the warmest and driest months in Uganda . Vegetation in the savannah habitats of Kidepo, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Lake Mburo national parks becomes scarce and animals gather around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot. This is a good time of year to summit the Rwenzori mountains and Mount Elgon. 

The habitat of rainforests is, by default, very wet and slightly cooler than in the rest of the country. Whether dry or wet season, it's very likely you'll encounter rain during your gorilla and chimpanzee trekking . Just make sure to bring water-resistant clothes, forget about looking cute, and enjoy the experience! 

Tourists visit Uganda year-round. However, due to summer holidays around the world, it gets busier from December to January and from July to September. Although the parks won’t feel crowded whatsoever, you will have to reserve your  roadtrip rental car , gorilla permits, and hotels several months in advance to avoid disappointment. 

Best time to visit Uganda

Uganda  is a true year-round destination for  wildlife  enthusiasts, but the best time to visit for optimal game viewing conditions is during one of the two dry seasons: December to February and June to September. Temperatures remain steady month-to-month, typically sitting between 75°F to 86°F, but heavy showers can impact the accessibility of some trails and roads during the rainy periods. 

The best time to go to  Uganda  for a face-to-face  encounter with the elusive mountain gorilla  is between December and February or June and August. During these dry seasons, the skies are blue, days are clear, and hiking trails are relatively mud-free.

Although these incredible animals can be spotted year-round, conquering the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest during the rainy season can be slightly more challenging.  Gorilla trekking  can involve several hours of walking up and down hills, and during the wet months, trails will be muddy and slippery and thick tropical foliage can present some roadblocks. The off-season does have its benefits, though, and with fewer crowds, you might find yourself meeting a family of gorillas with only a handful of other trekkers.

Best for: cooling off in the misty mountains

January is the hottest month of the year in Uganda, with sunny days and temperatures ranging from 75ºF to 90ºF. This makes it a great time to escape the heat and head to the high altitudes of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for hiking and trekking with wildlife in cooler conditions. January is in the middle of Uganda's shorter dry season, and while rain is still possible in the forests, you're unlikely to experience regular downpours.

Best for: the driest trekking conditions and spotting wildlife

February is one of the  top months to visit Uganda  as it's a prime time for gorilla trekking and one of the driest months of the year. Ordinarily, hiking in the dense forests can be wet, muddy, humid and occasionally uncomfortable, but the dry days of February make for optimal trekking conditions. Plus, with reduced rainfall and decreased vegetation, spotting game is easier than ever. Expect clear skies, sunshine and average temps of 84ºF in Kampala and 77ºF in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Best for: lush green landscapes and birdwatching

March marks the beginning of Uganda's "long" rainy season, which lasts from March to May. During this time, long, heavy showers are to be expected every afternoon and evening, but as long as you have proper gear, a rainy season visit can be totally rewarding. Although heavy rains can impact the roads, the vegetation will be lush, and flowers will bloom across the country.

Bird enthusiasts can rejoice in March as the heavier rains prompt avian migration, so keep those binoculars handy! Queen Elizabeth National Park is an excellent place to spot a few of Uganda's 1000 unique and colorful bird species, and the area will be noticeably quieter and crowd-free during the off-season. Migratory birds take flight in April and return to Uganda by early to mid-November. 

Best for: quieter parks and good deals on low-season accommodation

April is the wettest month to visit Uganda, but savvy travelers will see it as an opportunity to capitalize on affordable accommodation and crowd-free national parks.

For those up for an adventure, permits to trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park will be easier to book this month with fewer other travelers to compete with. Although the trek will come with some weather-related challenges (proper rain gear is a necessity!), the rainy days typically have gorillas congregating in the warmth of the lower altitudes, so while the routes are bound to be muddy, getting to the gorillas will take much less time.

Best for: fewer crowds and more intimate wildlife encounters

May is at the tail end of the long rainy season, so days will be warm and wet, with showers tapering off toward the end of the month. Heavy downpours will be frequent in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, but the gorillas will still be visible at lower altitudes before they head back up into the cooler mountains in June.

Lodging is readily available in May, and prices are usually significantly lower than during peak season. Plus, wildlife permits are reduced this month as crowd sizes thin, so you could find yourself observing a family of gorillas with as few as 2 or 3 other trekkers.

Best for: peak season excitement

The rains let up in June, leaving the landscape gorgeously green with blue skies and warm temps averaging around 81ºF. Toward the end of the month, vegetation starts to thin, increasing your chances of spotting four of The Big 5 game animals throughout the country's parks.

Since June is the first month of Uganda's peak season, lodges and activities will be open and the area will be buzzing with excitement. You will want to book accommodation early and secure your gorilla permit as soon as possible, though, since they tend to sell out quickly.

Best for: ideal weather conditions for doing it all

July is peak season in Uganda and with good reason: daytime temps sit at a pleasant 77ºF, occasionally dropping to 55ºF in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The dry climate and comfortable conditions open the door for a myriad of outdoor activities, from gorilla trekking to  safaris  to boat cruises on the Nile. Game drives will have top-notch sightings as wildlife congregate around watering holes and are easy to spot. By July, gorillas have made the climb back up into the misty mountains, but the lack of rainfall makes the longer treks much more manageable.

Best for: leopard sightings and wildlife photography

Uganda's landscape is sparse in August, the driest month of the year. But while vegetation is at its lowest, visibility is at an all-time high. August is a prime month for game drives, and you'll have a clear view of all the animals that may cross your path, from elephants and lions to zebras and buffalo — a photographer's dream! With unobstructed paths, you may even get the chance to spot one of the most hard-to-find members of the animal kingdom: the leopard. 

Pack layers as nights can get chilly in August, with temps that can get down to 57ºF.

Best for: chimpanzee tracking in the forests

While the end of September ushers in Uganda's second rainy season of the year, the first half still makes for excellent game-spotting conditions. Typically, the rains won't arrive in the highlands until later in the month, so early September is a popular time for chimp trekking in the Kalinzu Forest. The Kalinzu Forest is home to over 300 chimpanzees, and a hike to see them in their natural habitat is a popular dry-season activity, as trails will be in the best condition.

Best for: last-minute travel deals

October is the start of Uganda's "short" rainy season. Although the rains aren't as heavy as the "long" ones from March through May, they are more frequent, and you should be prepared for the occasional heavy shower throughout the day and muddy conditions.

Because of the unpredictability of the rains, October isn't a very popular month to travel to Uganda, making it a great time to score a last-minute gorilla permit if you're an undecided traveler. Accommodations often run specials for October, and prices will be more reasonable. Don't let the rains scare you off, though! It typically only rains for a few hours a day, and you'll still have perfect pockets of sunshine and blue sky.

Best for: shoulder season quietness

November is shoulder season in Uganda, and you'll likely get a mix of both rainy and dry days. It's a good time to catch sight of the migratory birds returning, and photographers will be treated to dramatic skies and landscapes as late afternoon thunderstorms roll through the emerald-green countryside. 

Temperatures can vary, with some days reaching 82ºF and others dipping to 64ºF, though less than half of the days in November are rainy. November is the last month to take advantage of off-season prices on accommodation and tours before the second peak season arrives.

Best for: adventure activities in Jinja and relaxing by the Nile

December brings another dry season, and weather becomes more predictable as rainfall tapers off. This makes it a great month to soak up the sunny days in Jinja. Sitting on the shores of Lake Victoria, the town of Jinja is home to the source of the Nile River. Often called the "adrenaline capital of East Africa," it has plenty of water activities, from rafting and kayaking to tubing and sunset cruising. Lake Victoria is one of the most ecologically diverse places on the continent, so keep your camera ready for when you spot Nile crocodiles and hippos.

When to go to the Pearl of Africa ? The best time to visit Uganda is during Uganda ’s two dry seasons between June and August and from December to February. Although Uganda is good to visit all year round due to its consistent temperatures, these dryer months are good for mountain gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking as well as other wildlife viewings in the national parks of Uganda.

The best weather in Uganda is in the months of June, July, January, and February because there is little rainfall during these months.

• December to February

If you travel to Uganda during the dry season doesn’t mean there is no rainfall. It can rain anytime, but the rains are less frequent and less heavy than during Uganda’s wet season. Uganda knows two drier seasons: from June to August and from December to February . During the dry season, the skies are usually clear with lots of sunshine and the average temperature is 27°C, with 16°C in the early morning.

June and July are the driest months in southern Uganda. In northern Uganda, these months are still part of the wet season. December, January, and February have less rainfall in most of Southern Uganda, but still more compared to June and July. Northern Uganda has a clear dry season with very little rain.

The drier months are the best time for gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking. The drier it is, the less vegetation there is in the national parks, meaning the animals gather around water holes or rivers and the wildlife is, therefore, easier to spot. Northern Uganda can sometimes experience periods of drought in for example the semi-arid Kidepo Valley National Park, with an average daily temperature of 32°C.

• October to November

The climate in Uganda is largely tropical with two wet seasons in Uganda: March to May is the long rainy season and October to November  is the  short rainy season. The average temperature during the day is 28°C and morning temperatures are around 16°C.

During this period, it can be harder to get around in Uganda as some accommodations in areas of high rainfall might close down and roads or trails can be in poor condition, but nothing to worry about. You can still go on safari in Uganda’s rainy season, including the popular primate treks. However, it’s slightly colder in the gorilla parks because of their higher altitudes. The northern region of Uganda has only one rainy season because it lies outside of the tropical belt. It’s also warmer in the north of Uganda.

The peak of the wet season throughout Uganda is between March, April, and May. Expect the worst weather (highest rainfall) in April in southern Uganda. However, after a heavy rain shower, the sky usually opens up and the sun starts shining again. The rains in October and November are shorter compared to March, April, and May.

The months with the highest rainfall mark the two low seasons of Uganda. One of the advantages of visiting Uganda in the low season is that gorilla trekking can be cheaper and the prices of accommodation are much lower. Other advantages are that the landscape, including the savannah plains, is lush green and there are many newborns.

The peak season in Uganda is in the months of June, July, August, and September . The combination of school holidays and the dry season of Uganda make these the busiest months in terms of tourists visiting Uganda. If you want to go on a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda ’s high season, it’s highly recommended to book your gorilla trekking permit at least 3 to 6 months in advance. Although Uganda has a peak season, you don’t have to be afraid of overcrowded places and mass tourism . The national parks in Uganda still don’t feel crowded during these months.

Because the country is situated on the equator with no true seasons and temperatures that don’t fluctuate much (24 to 30 degrees Celcius), Uganda is a year-round safari destination and a true birdwatcher’s paradise throughout the year.

The parks in the south tend to be warmer during the day and cooler at night because of the tropical climate of southern Uganda. Kampala has a slightly milder climate due to its location near Lake Victoria.

The areas at higher altitudes, like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla Park, are a bit colder with temperatures averaging from 15 to 20°C; especially early mornings, evenings, and nights in the highlands can get quite cold. Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley are warmer with an average daytime temperature of 32°C.

Except for the northern region of Uganda, the rest of Uganda lies within a humid equatorial climate zone , and the topography, prevailing winds, and lakes and rivers cause various rainfall patterns across Uganda.

Overall, Uganda experiences moderate temperatures ranging between 22,3°C (July) and 24,5°C (February) . The total annual average rainfall in Uganda is 1197 mm, and the mean monthly precipitation of Uganda varies from 46.5 mm in January to 151.9 mm in April .

The minimum temperature is the country-wide average temperature in the early morning or late evening, whereas the maximum temperature is the average maximum temperature during daytime hours, most likely measured in the northern region of Uganda, as that part has higher temperatures than the rest of the country. The data is measured over a period of almost 30 years from 1991 to 2020.

Uganda rarely sees any snow and has no organized ski areas, although the Rwenzori Mountains have glaciers on their upper slopes because of their height up to 5109m (16.761 feet). Because of climate change, scientists expect that these snow-capped mountains in Africa will not last beyond 2030, which is quite shocking.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The best time to visit Bwindi Forest is in January, February, June, and July. The worst months to visit Bwindi Forest for Gorilla trekking are April, May, October, and November. The same counts for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park .

Kibale National Park

The best time to visit Kibale National Park is in January, February, June, and July. The worst months to visit Kibale are April, September, October, and November.

Kidepo Valley National Park

The best time to visit Kidepo National Park is in January, February, November, and December. March, April, September, and October are also good periods to visit Kidepo Valley. The worst time to visit Kidepo in Uganda is in the months of May until August.

Lake Mburo National Park

The best time to visit Lake Mburo is in January, February, June, and July. August and December are also good to visit Lake Mburo. The worst months to visit Lake Mburo are April and November.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is a year-round safari destination in Uganda, but the park is at its best in January, February, March, June, July, and December. However, the other months are a good time to visit as well. There's no wrong time to visit Murchison Falls due to its climate.

It's always hard to give an answer to questions like ' When is the best time to visit Uganda? ' as it depends on the type of traveler and preferences. Before you travel to Uganda, ask yourself which region of Uganda you want to explore, what activities you would like to include in your Uganda itinerary, and what the most important aspects are when planning a safari in Uganda, like budget, temperature & rainfall, wildlife viewing conditions and more.

For example, if you are a budget traveler and that is an important aspect, I would suggest traveling in Uganda's shoulder seasons or low seasons because prices are cheaper. For wildlife photographers, I would suggest traveling in shoulder seasons as it's less busy with photogenic verdant backdrops and dramatic skies.

I traveled to Uganda in for example November, in the wet season. I really loved this period of traveling as everything was green. I spotted enough wildlife and even the conditions for gorilla trekking and the Chimpanzee habituation experience were very good. Because of that personal experience, I would recommend November as a good time to travel to Uganda, just like I would recommend May and June.

33 Things To Know Before You Travel To Uganda in 2024

Traveling in Uganda is one big off the beaten path adventure. It won’t be anything like your standard trip in Europe or the States and although it simply requires a little more planning, traveling to Uganda is a lifetime experience. While many travelers visit Uganda for the mountain gorilla trekking, the country has so much more to offer. Some people are still in the understanding that Uganda is unsafe, but don't worry. In this Uganda travel blog you can read everything you should know before traveling to Uganda.

No country is perfect and surely not here in Eastern Africa, but its imperfections will make your Uganda trip one to remember. Planning a Uganda holiday doesn’t need to be difficult, especially now that Uganda tourism is growing rapidly and even a DIY trip is possible since the country is actually investing heavily in infrastructure.

1. Do you need a visa to travel to Uganda

Almost all countries will need a visa when traveling to Uganda. Check out the visa policy for Uganda here. E-visas can be purchased online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration . This is the only authentic Visa Application Portal for Uganda visas and it costs $50, exclusive service fee.

Avoid other (fraudulent) portals where you’ll pay much more for your Uganda visa! 

Visa on arrival

There is still the opportunity to get a visa on arrival for Uganda, but only at the land borders and kind of unofficially. Some travelers I know still managed to get a visa on arrival crossing overland from Kenya in November 2021, but officially the E-visa replaced all visa on arrivals for Uganda. So Traveltomtom recommends getting the e-visa for Uganda.

When flying to Uganda, an e-visas is mandatory. The Uganda e-visa is quick and easy, but also a little work as they require a passport-copy, recent passport-size photograph and your yellow fever vaccination certificate. Click here to apply for an e-visa for Uganda .

Traveltomtom traveled overland from Bukoba in Tanzania to Masaka in Uganda in May 2021. The whole border process took him just about 5 minutes. Just have your $50 or $100 bill ready and a visa on arrival will be fixed in just a couple minutes.

Eastern African Community single tourists visa

If you are planning to travel to Kenya and Rwanda on the same trip the Eastern African Community tourists visa is worth applying. This visa is a single entry tourist visa for these three countries, but within its borders it is multiple entry. It cost $100 and is valid for 90 days. As soon as you leave one the 3 countries, it loses its validity.

2. Do I need vaccinations to travel to Uganda

First of all, yes you do need shots to visit Uganda as without a Yellow Fever vaccination certification you can not obtain a visa. They actually check it at the border. On top of that it is also advised you get vaccinations for DTP, Hepatitis A and malaria. Some organizations may advice you to take Typhoid, Cholera, Hepatitis B and Rabies as well.

At the moment a negative PCR test within 72 hours is also required to travel to Uganda. It does not make a difference if you are vaccinated or not, everyone needs a negative PCR test. Obviously Covis regulations change all the time, therefore I recommend you to have a look at the 

BTW if you travel to Uganda you will see NO signs of covid, not in the big cities, not in the countryside. Wearing a mask is officially mandatory in some places, but hardly ever enforced nor is anyone wearing a mask (properly).

Leaving Uganda and looking to do a PCR test? Easy, easy. You can do them almost everywhere in the labs of the bigger cities as well as on the land borders. For $50 you can do one at the border of Kenya and also at the Tanzania land border and waiting time for the result is 4-6 hours. In the bigger cities you pay between 200,000 ($70) and 280,000 ($100). Waiting time is 24 hours, but in reality results are returned by whatsapp/email within 4-6 hours.

3. Is there Malaria in Uganda

There is a risk of Malaria throughout the country and therefore all Uganda travel guides will recommended you to take Malaria medication. in 2018, Traveltomtom writer Kim Paffen traveled on a 3 week itinerary around Uganda , she decided to use malaria medication. Traveltomtom however did not during his 2 weeks in Uganda in May and August. If you go to the Northern areas and for example travel to Murchison Falls, most travelers take malaria pills.

In general the most important is to protect yourself against mosquito bites and it can be as simple as wearing long pants and sleeves just before sunset. If you want a plant based medicinal protection against malaria, have a look into using Artemisia .

4. Is it safe to travel to Uganda

Uganda is generally considered to be a safe country with low crime rates. Both Kim and Traveltomtom felt completlely safe all the time! Just avoid travel by road outside major towns at night. It’s also adviced to gather the latest travel information when traveling to the South Sudan border region and Karamoja in the very north. There have some problems reported regarding the so called Kenyan Warriors, but not against tourists.

However, visiting Kidepo Valley National Park, which lies close to the border with South Sudan is totally fine. Simply use common sense at all times, take care of your belongings and be aware of your surroundings and one should be totally fine traveling in Uganda.

Since the global pandemic crime rates have gone up according to locals, but Traveltomtom visited Kampala and there was not a moment he felt uneasy or anything like that. He was told not to take out his iPhone in public too much, as they snatch phones from tourists these days.

But as you know Traveltomtom films everything for his Instagram stories and it was no issue at all. Just be smart about when and where and how! I also took my group trip to visit Kampala and even with 3 ladies it was fine. Just a little intimidating at times.

5. Can you drink the tap water in Uganda

Well let me first advice you to just not drink the tap water in Uganda! Yes, we also want to reduce single-use plastic, but most of the tap water in Uganda is just not made for drinking. At least not for Western stomachs. You just don't want to ruin you Uganda trip by being brave and trying to drink the tap water. It is not worth it. However, it is totally fine to use it to brush your teeth, wash your face and mouth, etc. Don't panic when you coincidentally swallow a little bit of the tap water in Uganda. You will be fine, no worries. Our advice is to buy bottled drinking water, that way you are also supporting local businesses. 

6. Best time to travel to Uganda?

You can travel to Uganda all year! The best time for Uganda safaris is during the dry season from June to August and from December to February. In dryer conditions wildlife is easier to spot.

The high season is from June to September, but it will never really get crowded. There is no real peak season for traveling to Uganda. The most challenging months to visit Uganda are March, April and May. Because of the wet season traveling around can get a little more complicated. Roads and nature trails can be in poor conditions.

The gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be done year round. Keep in mind that places like Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queens National Park, etc can get cold at night even in summer due to their high altitudes.

7. Famous Quote about Uganda from Winston Churchill

in 1908 Winston Churchill spoke the following famous quote about Uganda that still resonates in Uganda nowadays:

"For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life - bird, insect, reptile, beast - for vast scale, Uganda is truly the Pearl of Africa."

That is why you will see Welcome to the Pearl of Africa all around Uganda.

8. What is the currency in Uganda

The name of the local currency in Uganda is the Shilling. Uganda is still a cash country and card payments are not common. However most bigger hotels and lodges and even at the Uganda National Parks you can pay with either credit cards as well as USD, Euros and GBP these days. So when paying for example the $700 National Park fee for mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi  there is no need to bring stacks of Uganda cash.

Makes sure you always have Uganda Shillings (UGX) on you during your Uganda trip. Small bills like 1,000 UGX are the equivalent of just 25 dollar cents, but they are worth big smiles if you give them to locals as a tip. Try to buy local to support local people in Uganda.

9. Exchange money

You will get the best value for money when you exchange US dollar into Ugandan Shilling at a Forex office in one of the towns. You can also change money at the Entebbe Airport, but the rates are significantly lower. There are exchange offices all around the bigger towns and the Uganda tourist attractions.

Be aware of the US Dollar-UGX exchange rate. Some Ugandans are very ‘creative’ with converting their currency in for example US Dollars or Euros. As per January 2024 the official exchange rate is around: $1 USD = 3,800 UGX.

10. ATM's in Uganda

When updating this Uganda travel blog Traveltomtom added this item as he had problems withdrawing money from ATM's. Apparently his bank (Revolut) suspended all transactions with Uganda. This came as a total surprise and things got a little complicated. Luckily he had some cash on him and used another Visa credit card to withdraw money.

The Standard Chartered Bank charges the highest fees for withdrawing money: 20,000 UGX = $5.4 USD. Stanbic Bank and Absa Bank charge 11,500 UGX = $3 USD. The best ATM in Uganda for foreign bank cards is Bank of Baroda as they do NOT charge a fee for withdrawing money.

11. Buy a local sim card for Uganda

Stay connected in Uganda and buy a local sim card. Prepaid Uganda sim cards are cheap and you get about 5 GB for $5 USD. I advice travelers to get a Airtel Uganda sim card based on my own experiences. 12. Facebook is available again

Because of a dispute between the Uganda Government and Facebook back in 2021 Facebook and Instagram were blocked for a long time.  Luckily when visiting Uganda again in August 2021, things got partially solved as Instagram is accessible again. The Facebook block was luckily also lifted in 2023 and therefore as of 2024 you can use all social media apps without any problems.

By law it is officially forbidden to use a VPN in Uganda but it is of course very common. There is not direct need anymore since all social media apps are available again.

In those years WhatsApp was also blocked, but when you would pay an extra social media tax (OTT) the app would be accessible. Luckily, since July 2021 the social media tax is something from the past as well and the OTT is lifted by the government. You can use WhatsApp in Uganda without any problem.

13. How is the WiFi in Uganda

Let's not talk around the bush, the WiFi in Uganda is shit. Although most lodges offer free Wi-Fi in their main areas, it’s mostly not working or it is very slow. It is best to buy a Uganda prepaid sim card on arrival or buy a sim card at Entebbe Airport . Just don't rely on WiFi when traveling in Uganda.

14. What is the food like in Uganda

Local food is a mix of matoke (cooked bananas), cassave, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, tomatos, cabbage and a sauce made of grounded peanuts. The sauce is very similar to satay sauce from Indonesia. This is what a standard local meal looks like in Uganda and you should try it in a local restaurant. Locals love it if tourists come and try their local food. It shouldn't cost more than $2 normally.

When traveling in Uganda you will also quickly find out that there is a huge Indian influence and that is why you can find Indian food everywhere. Traveltomtom has visited India a lot and loves Indian food, but in Uganda they prepare very good Indian food too. He was pleasantly surprised. It is also very common to find chapati on the streets and in restaurants.

One more great thing to mention about Ugandan food is that there are fresh fruits everywhere. You can find it on the streets and it is CHEAP!

Are you staying in more upscale lodges, then often the meals are included. That means you will be served a 3 course meal every evening, which mostly is Western orientated dishes like pasta, steak, fish, etc.

15. What is a Ugandan Rolex?

A Rolex is not a watch, but it comes from a dish called rolled eggs. You can buy it almost everywhere along the street. I ate is several times as breakfast or lunch and found it to be very tasty. It is basically a chapati with egg. Cheap, fast and pretty good. A street food Rolex shouldn't cost more than 1,500 UGX ($0.35)

16. Do you tip in Uganda?

Tipping is normal in Uganda. Most guides expect a small tip after for example a bout tour, game drive or a nature walk. Because locals have limited access to exchange tips in a foreign currency, the best thing to do is tipping them in Ugandan Shilling.

The average monthly income in Uganda varies throughout the country and ranges between 500.000 UGX ($140 USD) and 1.000.000 UGX ($280 USD) . Tipping someone a couple dollars will give you a lot of smiles throughout your trip to Uganda. Ugandan people are super friendly, especially the ones in the tourism business and those who speak English. I am sure you gonna see a lot of big smiles leaving a couple dollars behind as a tip.

17. How much are the National Park fees in Uganda in 2024

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has set fixed fees for visiting national parks in Uganda. Park entrance fees differ a little per National Park but most of the famous tourists spots in Uganda are around $40 for tourists. Some lesser known parks charge $35 and some small reserves only $10 for foreign non-residents (FNR). Be aware that National Park fees in Uganda are per 24 hours. That means you can be creative with the park fees when you schedule it right.

Click here to download the latest National Park Fees in Uganda  as a PDF directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority website. For vehicles you pay an additional national park fee. The national park fees for cars are a single payment so you don't pay per day. For the car you pay another 30,000 UGX.

Example: you visit Uganda with your partner and visit 4 of the most popular National Parks all for 2 days then expect to pay the following national park fees: 4 * 2 * 2 * $40 = $640 in national park fees.

On top of that you would have to pay for the vehicle: 4 * $8 = $32. In total you then pay $672 national park fees. It may sound a lot but traveling in Uganda is so worth it.

18. How much do excursions cost in Uganda

When traveling in Uganda you will find out that things to do in Uganda are NOT cheap. I was surprised that white water rafting in Jinja on the Nile River costs somewhere between $80 and $140 USD depending on your negotiation skills. It is a full day trip, but still... I just told you what the average income per month is in Uganda.

Excursion prices vary enormously, but to give you an idea here are some prices for activities that I found through the Uganda Wildlife Authority website .

19. Uganda tourism is expensive

In case you didn't know yet, traveling in Africa is expensive and Uganda is no exception. If you eat local, sleep local and travel local then you can travel Africa on a budget. But as soon as you want to see some of the best places to visit in Uganda, things get a lot more expensive.

In all honesty some travel experiences in Uganda are very expensive! Traveltomtom has traveled to more than 110 countries and especially on his overland trip in Africa he found Uganda to be one of the more expensive countries. For example a 3d/2n trip to Murchison Falls from Entebbe was $400 and that during the global pandemic. Bargaining about these trip prices is not easy either. It is the National Park fees, the tour operators, the local guides, the transportation, etc. that make these tours in Uganda so expensive.

20. Travel Uganda on a budget

Can you visit Uganda on a budget? Yes you can! Traveltomtom did a guided tour to the gorillas trekking in Bwindi National Park and safaris in Mburo National Park, but mainly traveled overland for most part of his Uganda trip. Local busses are cheap and the more local you go, the cheaper it becomes. Of course it also becomes less comfortable and it will take much more time

A 2-3 hour bus ride should not cost more than $5. There are busses in every direction. Big coaches are pretty comfortable but you could also negotiate to take the front seat in one of the smaller vans called Matatus and pay for 2 seats. Traveltomtom always bought the driver and his helper a drink or some snacks, it is a couple cents, but it makes your trip much more comfortable.

When visiting National Parks try to hitch a ride with some other tourists. You will still have to pay the national park fees, but it is a great way to save on guided safaris. Visiting the mountain gorillas there is no other way then paying for permit that includes a guided trekking.

However some places to visit in Uganda are free, like the equator sign! :)

21. Boda Boda's in Uganda

Traveltomtom named Uganda the Vietnam of Africa. If you have ever visited Vietnam then you know what he means. Motorbikes are the main mode of transportation for local people in Uganda, not for tourists.However, there are motorbikes everywhere and Traveltomtom made great use of that. Big parts of his overland trip in Uganda he also used boda boda's.

For example a Boda Boda from Entebbe to Kampala is about 50 minutes and should not cost more than 40,000 UGX, but you can easily negotiate it down to 30,000 UGX. Traveltomtom also traveled by Boda Boda from Kampala to Jinja for 80,000, which was a 2,5h trip. If you are up for an adventure then traveling by motorbike in Uganda is pretty wild!

22. There is Uber and Bolt in Uganda

Looking for a safe way to travel then surely recommend you to use one of the taxi apps. The most common one to Western tourists is of course Uber, but you can also use Bolt in Uganda. It is the exact same thing. Of course if you go off the beaten path in Uganda, don't expect to find an Uber or Blot, it is limited to the bigger cities only.

When looking for food delivery apps then download the Glovo app. There is no Uber Eats in Uganda, but Glovo works fine. However, it is very limited to Kampala mostly. Glovo can do grocery shopping for you or deliver you stuff from the pharmacy.

23. When and where to buy Chimpanzee and Gorilla trekking permits?

Secure your gorilla or chimp trekking permits prior to arrival to avoid disappointment! The permits are issued by UWA that markets them through Uganda Tour Operators to the public. Therefor it’s best to book your trekking permit (or a complete trekking tour) with a tour operator that is a member of the Association of Uganda Tour Operators. The mountain gorilla trekking permits cost $700 in 2024 for foreign non-residents.

You can obtain and pay the Gorilla trekking permit directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority website .

I advise you to apply for a permit 6 months prior to the date you want to trek. Permits from June-August and December and February tend to sell out quickly. Last minute bookings may be possible during low season. For more info read my complete gorilla trekking blog , which is also updated for 2024.

24. Electricity plugs in Uganda

Few areas outside the cities actually have electricity. Most of the lodges use solar energy or generators, which means there is only power at certain times of the day and electricity plugs are limited. Because of that, it isn’t always possible to charge all your devices in your room. In some places you will be able to charge your phone, but laptops or camera batteries have to be charged in the reception or main area.

Hairdryers use too much power so these are often not available. Of course the more expensive lodges have 24h facilities available, but be prepared to pay $300 per person per night for those. A helpful Uganda travel tip is to bring powerful powerbanks to charge your devices when needed and bring extra batteries for cameras, etc.

The electricity plugs in Uganda are similar to the ones in the UK. So make sure you bring a travel adapter with you when visiting Uganda. For more info on what to pack for a Uganda trip keep reaading.

25. Road conditions in Uganda

There are a lot of road works in Uganda and although many roads improved a lot over the last years, some roads are still in a very bad condition. Depending on the weather it sometimes can be challenging to travel around Uganda. If you choose to drive yourself (which is an option) I would suggest driving a 4WD. Keep in mind that you have to drive on the left side of the road.

Contact UWA Headquarters to obtain up-to-date advice about the road conditions and identify the preferred route when visiting Uganda. Especially if you consider an approach through Karamoja (like me). Some roads can be very bad after heavy rains. In that case it’s better to take an alternative route. There are a lot of investments in Ugnada tourism and (new) roads, so the up-to-date UWA information can come in very handy.

26. Self drive vs. hiring a driver

There are a lot of tourists on the road exploring the country on a self driving tour. All of the people Traveltomtom met on his recent trip to Uganda that were renting a car and self driving had a 4x4. A bunch of them were actually carrying camping gear and camped most of the time. According to them is was a great way to save some money, because renting a 4x4 is not gonna be cheap. Expect to spend about $80 per day, if you are hiring a driver, expect to pay around $150 per day.

A big tourist vehicle can hold up to 6 people though, so if you are with a group that would be best and then I definitely suggest renting a big 4x4 including a driver.

Hiring a car with driver in Uganda gives you time to enjoy the long road trips. The landscapes are amazing and there is so much to see along the road. Main roads are pretty ok, however if you go to specific tourist spots like National Parks, then road suddenly get shit. As soon as you turn off from the main roads, traveling in Uganda become much more difficult. Road conditions are bad and having a driver will save you a lot of stress and hassle. My recommendations is to rent a car with driver for a road trip in Uganda, however it is obviously much more expensive.

When self driving you will also have to deal with the many police checks yourself. In general they won't stop tourist vehicles, but some travelers reported they had to pay small bribes. Corruption is present in Uganda, but in general a tourists should be totally fine.

27. Gas stations in Uganda

Always make sure you have enough fuel for a long journey. In general there is no shortage of gas stations along the route, but plan your Uganda road trip itinerary carefully. For example if you decide to visit Kidepo National Park. It’s a long journey up north and you need enough fuel (including your game drive activities in the national park) since there is no gas station in or around Kidepo Valley National Park. The nearest gas stations are in Kaabong and Kitgum.

28. Languages in Uganda

Uganda counts more than 40 languages, every tribe speaks their own language. Uniform language especially in and around the famous tourist places in Uganda is luckily English. If you go off the beaten path you could run into places where English is not spoken very well, but in general you shouldn't have any problems communicating with local people.

In general all the Ugandans are very friendly people. It’s impolite to only say ‘Hi!’ So instead use ‘How are you?’. Even children will greet you with ‘How are you?’ They also love to touch your soft ‘Muzungu’ skin.

Here are some words in local Uganda language that you could use and local people would totally love it.

29. Things to do and places to visit in Uganda

We already spoke about the Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi National Park , which obviously is the major tourist attraction in Uganda, but there is much more to see and do. The Chimpanzee trekking is another amazing thing to do in Uganda and a must see when you are a wildlife lover are the tree climbing lions. It is a very rare phenomenon but you can see them in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Apart from the stunning wildlife there are some epic waterfalls to visit. A tour to Murchison Falls is a very popular tourist destination and a little more off the beaten path are the Sipi Falls. Just about 80 kilometer East of Kampala you will find the laidback city of Jinja, where you can find the source of the Nile and where white water rafting is the number one thing to do.

A place to visit in Uganda that is popular with backpackers is Lake Bunyonyi. A stunning crater lake with numerous islands. Kayaking and taking in the stunning views while swinging in a hammock are great things to do here. Near Lake Bonyonyi there is Lake Mburo National Park and much more to the Northeast there is Mbale and Kidepo Valley National Park which are popular places to visit in Uganda.

30. Visit Kampala if you dare!

Are you ready for an adventure then definitely don't miss out on visiting Kampala. I totally understand it is not for everyone, but when you want to see some extraordinary city life I recommend you to check it out. The traffic is crazy, the amount of people is insane, yes it is dirty, it is not beautiful, yet I still recommend it. Why? It is a fantastic experience with a dozen impressions on every street corner.

My travel tip for visiting Kampala is to hit up Steve from Free Walking Tours in Kampala and he will show you the best places to visit in Kampala. Also a must when in Kampala is visiting the Gaddafi Mosque, according to Traveltomtom one of the best things to do in Kampala , because you can climb to the top of the minaret and have the most amazing view over Kampala.

31. What to bring to Uganda

Remember to dress respectfully. Uganda is conservative, so in general it’s better to avoid short skirts or shorts when traveling to Uganda. For women it’s best to bring an over the knee skirt because it’s impolite to wear trousers or shorts while visiting local community. I did wear shorts during day activities like hikes, safaris or boat tours, no problem.

Pack good hiking shoes (Traveltomtom disagrees LOL) for your chimpanzee or gorilla trekkings. Some parts can be very muddy and slippery. It’s also good to pack gaiters, gloves, a rain jacket/poncho and a hat. Although it’s hot wear long trousers and thin long-sleeved shirts to protect your arms and legs from scratches. 

Long clothing will also help protect you from diseases carried by mosquitoes and other insects such as tsetse flies. In general you should bring a flashlight, daypack, insect repellent, malaria pills for some areas, waterproof bags and an international driving license if you’re thinking of driving yourself.

Since you will probably meet a lot of children on your way, consider bringing some pencils to give to them (in stead of candies or money).

32. Camera gear and equipment for Uganda

It depends on your interest, but avid photographers and wildlife enthusiasts I recommend to bring the following to Uganda:

• Descent camera: for example a DSLR with several lenses or a camera with enough optical zoom. What I packed in my photography bag was a Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon 100-400mm lens , Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 lens and a Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens .
• A solid tripod .
• Enough batteries and memory cards .
• Binoculars , but many driver guides also have binoculars in their car.

When is the best time to visit Uganda?

Many travellers ask us when is the best time to visit Uganda. The truth is: the best time is always! Thanks to its stable and constant temperatures, it’s possible to visit Uganda all year round. Nevertheless (of course there’s a nevertheless), some seasons are better for specific activities than others. So the best travel time really depends on what you want to do.

To help you decide, we have created a little overview for you. Find out more on the different touristic seasons, the weather and which time is perfect for your plans. No pressure, though, since a journey to Uganda is bound to be amazing – no matter when!

Touristic seasons in Uganda

Uganda has three different holiday seasons, mostly related to peak holiday seasons and rainy seasons.

High season

The high season in Uganda runs from July to September (summer holidays) and from December 20th to the end of January (Christmas holiday). As you might have guessed, during these months you have to pay more for your accommodation, activities etc.

The low season is related to the rainy season, since fewer people want to travel in the rain. Low season months are therefore March, April, May and November to December 19th. The upside: prices are lower and if you don’t mind a little rain, this could be your perfect travel time.

The mid-season are all months not mentioned above, basically the rest of the year.

Two rainy seasons, two dry seasons

The rainfall patterns in Uganda vary a lot since its climate is largely influenced by its topography: plateaus, mountains, lakes and rivers.

In general, most regions experience two rainy seasons: from March to the end of May and from September to December, with the heaviest rainfall usually happening in April and October.

The dry seasons run from June to August and then from December to February. However, as Uganda has a tropical climate, you might see some rain during the drier months. But to be honest: it’s quite refreshing and enjoyable! You see… there is no good answer to the question: ”what is the best time to visit Uganda”. It all depends on your preferences.

When to visit Uganda for…

In Uganda, you can see tons of wildlife all year round. During the dry seasons, however, the grass is short and dry, making it easier to spot animals flocking to lakes and rivers shores and waterholes to quench their thirst under the scorching sun. Another plus: the roads are dry and easier to access.

The rainy seasons present unique animal spotting opportunities as well. The parks enchant you with vibrant greenery and blooming flowers, providing a picturesque backdrop for observing many herbivores grazing peacefully (keep your camera close!). Furthermore, when the sun and rain meet, we all know what happens: rainbows appear, which add a magical touch to your safari adventure instantly.

Another highlight of the rainy season: it’s a birthing period for most animals. If you have a soft spot for adorable four-legged babies (who doesn’t?), this is undoubtedly a great time to explore Uganda’s wildlife. And should you love birds, you’ll be in paradise thanks to the many migratory birds flocking to and nesting in Uganda during these months.

Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking

If you want to lace up your hiking boots and visit the majestic mountain gorillas or the playful chimpanzees in their home, you best travel during one of the dry seasons. In these months, the forest trails are less slippery, and it’s easier to get to the animals. Bear in mind, though, that these activities are among the most popular ones in Uganda and that you need a permit for your hike. So if you want to put this on your to-do list, you’d better plan everything as early as possible.

Boat safaris and rafting

Boat safaris are a popular activity in Uganda and can generally be enjoyed throughout the year, for example on Lake Mburo . On the Nile River on the other hand, it might be a bit tricky to go on a boat safari since heavy rainfall can significantly raise water levels, complicating navigation. Moreover, you might spot less wildlife along the shores since water is much more easily accessible. The same goes for white water rafting or cruses on the Nile. So if you want to include these experiences in your Uganda itinerary, the dry seasons would be the ideal travel time for you.

Special events

Discovering Uganda doesn’t only focus on animal spotting and nature exploring. You can also immerse yourself in the vibrant local events, discovering the country’s traditions, cuisine, art and music. The big events take place in August and September – unfortunately the most expensive months since they are part of the high season.

• Each September, the Bayimba International Festival of Music and Arts transforms the Uganda National Theatre in the heart of Kampala into a bustling hub of creativity. Over three days, this festival gives you a glimpse into not only Uganda’s but also East Africa’s dynamic music and art scene. Enjoy an eclectic mix of music, film, dance, theatre and visual arts.
• In early August, the Festival on the Nile in Jinja celebrates the diverse cultures of the people who live along the river and throughout Uganda’s tribes for one week. This festival is an enriching experience featuring an array of music, dance, theatre, folklore, storytelling and food, alongside live performances and a vibrant street parade.
• The Rolex Festival is celebrated every August in Kampala and honours Uganda’s beloved street food dish – the Rolex, a delicious combination of an omelette with vegetables wrapped in a chapati. The festival includes competitions to crown the best Rolex maker, culinary demonstrations and features live music and dancing, offering a taste of Uganda’s lively street food culture.
• The Nyege Nyege Festival is relatively new, but already one of Africa’s largest music festivals, showcasing both traditional and contemporary African music across various genres. This festival is a vibrant celebration of African music, art, and culture, providing a splendid opportunity to experience new sounds, discover Ugandan dishes and enjoy drinks available at numerous food stalls. Although rain is possible at any time of year in Uganda, the dry season is generally regarded as one of the top seasons to visit. At this time of year, wildlife viewing is at its best because fewer plants are in the way and many animals are out searching for waterholes. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees can be seen during this trekking season, and migratory birds can be seen by bird watchers.

Visiting Uganda in March – May

Considered a wet season in Uganda. Animals give birth in parks because of the abundance of vegetation. Migratory birds can also be easily spotted during this time. The roads aren’t always in the best shape because of how often it rains heavily. Journeys will be more rocky as a result.

Visiting Uganda in June – August

Even though it’s still rainy season, this is one of the nicest seasons to visit Uganda because it’s the dry season. Due to the lack of foliage that blocks your view and the abundance of animals that congregate around waterholes, it is an ideal location for wildlife viewing . When trekking for chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, this is the best time to go.

Visiting Uganda in September – October

This is a great time to visit, albeit it might rain. Due to the persistently sparse vegetation and the persistence of animals in their search for waterholes, there are nevertheless fantastic opportunities to witness wildlife.

Visiting Uganda in November

The national parks see a gradual transformation from arid plains to verdant as a result of the frequent rain showers that fall throughout November, which is considered a wet season. Migratory birds can be seen more easily during this time.

Visiting Uganda in December

In December, you might get a little rain, but you’ll have a lot of chances to see animals. Additionally, many migratory birds can be seen, and trekkers have a better chance of seeing mountain gorillas and chimpanzees during this season.

Understanding a complex climate

Typically, June through mid-September and December through February are the driest months in Uganda, making them ideal for wildlife viewing .

Uganda has a tropical climate that is comfortable all year round due to its location on the equator. Nevertheless, rainfall patterns can vary greatly among regions. For example, in western Uganda and the area surrounding Lake Victoria, it can rain at nearly any time of year. As a general rule, the wettest months are April to May and October to November.

From December to February or June to September, you have a considerably better chance of staying dry during primate trekking, especially for chimpanzees and gorillas.

It is better to visit Uganda during the driest months if you want to combine a traditional wildlife viewing safari with an ape walk; this makes Uganda unique. This is because animals tend to concentrate around the few remaining drinking spots when the weather remains continuously dry, which causes the seasonal pans and streams to dry up. At the same time, the plants are starting to die back, so you can see more of the game.

Experience Uganda’s best-kept secrets during the off-season

Many people avoid visiting in the off season because of the high probability of rain, but doing so means missing out on experiences that could make their vacation more memorable.

Low season costs on lodging and permits, together with the possibility of encountering less people, can be appealing in and of itself.

Mid-September through November and March through May are the best times to visit Uganda’s safari parks to see the grassy savannas and all the game, though it could be a bit tougher to spot.

Keep in mind that the gorillas and chimpanzees of Uganda live in rainforests, which can and frequently do get wetter than any other time of year.

You can view Uganda’s renowned avifauna at any time of year if you’re a good bird watcher, but you’ll have a better chance of seeing certain species during the rainier months because they’re more loud.

Sitting on the equator in East Africa , Uganda is a country that is becoming increasingly popular to visit as it offers such as diverse experience in Africa. Uganda receives abundant rainfall, so the country is always green. This is what it is known for, especially as the rest of East Africa is in such contrast with dry landscapes.

The temperatures are warm throughout the year but there are better times to visit than others. The period of June to September is regarded one of the best as it is the dry season, so the wildlife is reliable and offers good trekking conditions for the chimpanzees and gorillas .

Another good time to visit is Uganda is December to January, also offering dry and warm temperatures. The tropical climate of Uganda is mild depending on altitude. February tends to be the hottest month (around 28’C) and July the coldest month (but still around 24’C on average). The period of March to May is the rainy season in Uganda, and many of the lodges around the country are closed.

No matter what time of year you travel to Uganda, the packing list is the same. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You can do gorilla tracking throughout the year but there are certain times to avoid in our opinion. The months of April, May, November and December are the rainy months in Uganda. The rains are very intense in the forest and consequently, it makes the hiking very slippery and difficult. Although you will have your porter to help, it does make the overall hike longer. The rain can also make it difficult to photograph the gorillas, especially if they are out in the open with no protection from the rain. The period of June to October is the best time to see the gorillas but this is also the peak travel season so make sure you book in advance if you are wanting to stay in a particular lodge. Kibale National Park

Similar to gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking can be done all year round in Kibale Forest. The dry seasons are June to October and then again from December to February. During these times, the forest is less dense and the chimpanzees are much easier to find and observe. There are also very few or no mosquitoes at all, as well as other bugs. Because it is peak season, there are a number of tourists, so it will likely be full when you get to the briefing area before the trek. This is not an issue as such because you will be allocated your own small group of a maximum of 8 people and you will have your own guide per group. During the wet season, the forest and paths are slippery which makes the hike harder. This time however, is the best for those keen on birding as there are a lot of migratory birds that come into the forest during the wet seasons. Murchison Falls

The best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park is during the dry seasons from Decembr to February and again from June to September. The weather is warm and clear which makes it an enjoyable time to travel. The dry season also means that the animals congregate around river and water bodies making them easier to observe. Queen Elizabeth National Park

Like much of Uganda’s destinations, the park can be visited at any time of the year but the best experience, in terms of the game, is between the months of June and September. The months of December to January are also good times to go, as these are the dry seasons so the wildlife is more reliable as it tends to congregate around the permanent water sources. The park is easy to combine with other destinations in Uganda, such as gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, or to fly up to Murchison Falls in the northern region of Uganda. Murchison Falls National Park

Located in the northern region of Uganda, Murchison Falls is a waterfall found on the course of the great Nile. This is where the Nile squeezes through a narrow 8 metre gorge and cascades down to become a placid river and often a trademark rainbow.

During the early years of the British protectorate, the city of Entebbe was the capital of Uganda. Kampala has now taken its place as capital but that isn’t to say that Entebbe is not worth a visit, especially as it works well logistically, passing from one destination to another.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Located in the northern tip of Uganda, Kidepo Valley National Park is a vast wilderness in the remote Karamoja region, on the border of South Sudan. The landscape is compromised by spacious grasslands, seasonal rivers and mountains ranges leading up through Uganda, Kenya and South Sudan.

A city tour in Kampala will involve visiting places like Kabaka’s palace and lake, the Ugandan Museum, the Bahai temple (the only temple in Africa), Uganda Martyrs Shrine, beautiful cathedrals and the old mosque of Kampala.

Uganda is a fantastic destination all year round. But depending on what you plan to do – like safari drives or gorilla trekking – some months offer better weather conditions than others.

Uganda lies on the Equator and has a warm subtropical climate. Daytime temperatures average between 25 and 29°C (77 and 84°F). Night-time temperatures frequently drop below 20°C (68ºF), offering a nice reprieve on hot days. Humidity is pretty much always high, so don't forget your Mitchum.

The best seasons for visiting Uganda

The general consensus is that it's best to visit Uganda during one of the two dry seasons. The short dry season is roughly from December to February (or early March). The long dry season is roughly from June to September. Given its subtropical climate and position on the Equator, however, it might be more accurate to talk about Uganda's drier seasons.

The drier seasons in Uganda are December to February and June to August. These are good months to visit to avoid the rains. December to February are very hot, however, so June to September is the best time for dry weather and cooler days.

The best months for visiting Uganda are, in general, June to September, as there's little rain and the days are a bit cooler.

The eastern portion of the country is a little drier than the rest. This area doesn't tend to be visited quite as much by tourists, though it has many gems to offer like impressive game parks, Sipi Falls, coffee farms, and Mt Elgon National Park. Best time to visit Jinja

Jinja is a town in southern Uganda on the shore of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. The Victoria Nile flows out of Lake Victoria alongside Jinja and is considered by many to be the start of the Nile. There's a garden in Coronation Park marking the start of the Nile that you can visit.

Jinja, a pretty lakeside colonial town, is the adventure capital of Uganda.

As to the best time to visit Uganda if you want to stay in Jinja? We recommend anytime of year! Seriously. The place pretty much always has good weather. And Uganda isn't a country where parks close during certain months of the year.

But if you really don't like heat, then maybe opt to visit between April and December. January to early March are the hottest months, with temperatures reaching around 29ºC in the middle of the day. But mid December to February are the driest months, so that's when you're least likely to experience rainy days.

The period from June to August offers the most comfortable weather in Jinja.

June to August are also the best months for many other regions and activities in Uganda, as you'll see below. So you might consider this as the optimal season to visit Jinja.

Best time for gorilla trekking

You can go gorilla trekking in Uganda at any time of the year. Permits are sold for gorilla trekking in both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park all year round. That said, gorilla trekking in Uganda's wet seasons can be a very muddy and slippery experience, so maybe opt for one of the dry seasons if possible.

The best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is from mid December to early February, or from June to September.

The forests are never fully dry

It's worth pointing out that the forests where mountain gorillas live are never actually dry, even in the so-called dry season. Both Bwindi and Mgahinga experience rain and mist to some degree throughout the year, and they're always wet. They're rainforests, after all.

So know that whenever you go gorilla trekking, it will be a muddy experience. You'll want to bring quality trekking boots and maybe even gaiters, read more about this in What to pack for gorilla trekking post .

Peak season

Conveniently, the very best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking (June to early September) coincides with the school holidays of the Northern Hemisphere. Note that if you want to go gorilla trekking during these peak seasons, you need to book well ahead of time to ensure you get a permit date that fits in with your travel plans.

Best time for chimpanzee trekking

Chimpanzee trekking (or tracking) is a really rewarding (and underrated) experience. Similar to gorilla trekking, a small group goes on a guided hike in the forest to find and observe chimpanzee troops. We usually take clients to Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda for chimpanzee trekking. The park protects a beautiful moist evergreen forest, and here you can find chimps quite literally hanging about in the trees.

Adult chimps generally weigh between 32 and 60 kg (70 and 130 lb)

Excitingly, the park is actually home to 13 different primates, so you may see exciting monkeys like the red colobus in addition to seeing chimps.

The best time to visit Uganda for chimpanzee trekking is, conveniently, the same as the best time for gorilla trekking: December to February, and June to September.

The best times for chimpanzee trekking are the dry seasons, which are December to February, and June to September. As you'll be walking in forest, the dry seasons mean a less slippery walk. You're also less likely to have a rainy day.

Best time for safari in Uganda

We've taken clients on safari in Uganda at lots of different times of the year, and can honestly say that they've always had a fantastic adventure! But for those wanting to go during the drier seasons, when there's less chance of rain, we suggest opting for December to March, or June to August.

Let's now take a moment to consider a few of the best and most popular national parks and the best times to visit each, as Uganda is a pretty big country and different regions naturally have slightly varying seasonal patterns.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park in northeastern Uganda is arguably the country's best reserve. That's what all Ugandans think, at least, and one should always listen to locals!

Kidepo is an enormous park that has varied scenery and a high density of animals. One of the reasons for its flourishing wildlife populations is that the local people defended them in the past from poachers.

July and August are the very best months for seeing as many animals as possible in Kidepo Valley National Park.

The best time to visit Kidepo Valley National Park from a game-spotting point of view is in one of the dry seasons. This is because it's at these times that the animals congregate around watering holes, making them easier to find. During the wet seasons, the animals travel higher in search of drier ground, and this makes them harder to find. That said, you'll always find a wonderful abundance of wildlife in Kidepo!

Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo National Parks

Let's now chat about the best time to visit Uganda when you want to visit one or more of the game parks in the south and west of the country. The most famous of the parks are Murchison Falls National Park in the west, Queen Elizabeth National Park a little further south, and then Lake Mburo National Park not far from Lake Victoria. Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks are notable for offering you not only traditional safari drives, but also boat safaris! These are fantastic experiences, and we always recommend going on at least one boat safari while in Uganda.

June and July are arguably the best months for safari as the days are cooler and animals become easier to spot.

As always, the best time to go on safari depends on what you most want to see. Generally speaking, the dry months are lauded as the best, as that's when you're likely to see the most animals. But there are other factors worthy of consideration, so we've put together the table below, which summarises the pros and cons of each season.

Best time for hiking the Rwenzoris

You can visit the Rwenzori mountains any time of the year and enjoy fantastic hikes. However, if you wish to go hiking high up in the mountains or embark on a multiday trek (perhaps trek to the top of Mt Stanley?), you might like to consider the drier seasons. The trails in Rwenzori Mountains National Park are rugged, sometimes boggy and slippery, and at times very steep. So the best time to visit Uganda for hiking in the Rwenzoris is during either of the dry seasons.

The drier and therefore optimal hiking months in the Rwenzoris are July and August, and December to February.

Avoiding the crowds

Fortunately for those who don’t like overly popular places, the Rwenzori mountains are never crowded. No matter when you decide to visit, you'll enjoy a park full of wildlife and gorgeous vegetation, and fairly devoid of tourists.

Located on the country's western border with the DRC, the Rwenzori chain is actually only a few hours' drive from Entebbe International Airport. But it remains relatively unknown, a fact that keeps it from being overrun and has helped it to remain the pristine, somewhat mysterious and beautifully biodiverse place that it is.

Uganda may be on the Equator, but expect super cold weather when you climb the Rwenzori mountains!

Best time to visit the Virunga Mountains

The Virunga mountains can be found in the extreme southwest of Uganda. They're not really a mountain range so much as a chain of eight free-standing volcanic cones . The Virungas straddle the border region where the DRC, Uganda and Rwanda meet. The three volcanoes (all inactive) that lie partially in Uganda are: Mt Sabyinyo (3,669 m), Mt Muhabura (4,127 m) and Mt Gahinga (3,474 m).

While we usually take clients mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest further north, you can also go gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Par k. It's a smaller park than Bwindi, with fewer gorilla trekking permits being issued, but it's incredibly beautiful – some in fact feel it's the most picturesque national park in Uganda. It's also a great birding location.

If you're keen to travel to the Virunga mountains – whether to go gorilla trekking, on a summit hike, or both – the best time of year to visit is July to September. These are the driest months, so you're less likely to be rained out, or have a downward trail turn into an inelegant slide.

The best time to visit Uganda if heading to the Virunga mountains is between June and September, as these are the driest months.

That said, you can of course visit the Virungas at any time of year. And what's nice is that this region is generally cooler at lower elevations than the bulk of the country.
