The Ultimate Guide to 2C-B

(nexus, venus, bromo mescaline, bees, toonies).

2C-B is a potentially illegal substance, and we do not encourage or condone the use of this substance where it is against the law. However, we accept that illegal drug use occurs, and believe that offering responsible harm reduction information is imperative to keeping people safe. For that reason, this guide is designed to ensure the safety of those who decide to use the substance.

2C-B has been used as an aphrodisiac, entheogen, dance drug, ecstasy adulterant, and psychotherapeutic aid. However, it has yet to gain widespread acceptance and it has been banned in most countries since the mid-1990s.

What to expect

Shulgin claimed that 2C-B was one of his favorite psychedelics, and wrote in 2003 that the drug was “one of the most graceful, erotic, sensual, introspective compounds I have ever invented.” [1] Many people report that the experience has the groundedness of mescaline, the empathy of MDMA, and the visuals of mushrooms or LSD, but with more connection to reality. It’s known for enhancing one’s senses and feelings and amplifying visuals, sound, and touch.

2C-B is usually swallowed in the form of a tablet, capsule, or powder, which can also be dissolved in liquid. The threshold oral dose is 2-5 mg, while a light effective dose is around 5-15 mg. Most people take between 15 and 25 mg for a full experience, and anything above that is considered strong. 50 mg seems to be a good upper limit. [2]

The onset of 2C-B lasts about 45-75 minutes, with a 15-30 minute “coming up” period. During this time, it’s common to feel a sense of anticipation or even anxiety. This is often coupled with a pleasurable warmth or tingling—like electricity or pins and needles—going up and down the body. There may be signs of physical and sexual arousal, including raised hairs, muscle spasms, erection, chills, tremors, and dilated pupils. Some people report experiencing gastrointestinal issues such as gas, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

At high enough doses, 2C-B produces visual effects, which often include geometric patterns, after-images and tracers, facial distortions, environmental drifting (e.g. melting or flowing surfaces), and enhanced or shifting colors. Closed-eye visuals are often richer, with profound fantasy imagery. Auditory hallucinations are also common. At higher doses, these hallucinations can become unpleasant, ugly, or even frightening.

Peak effects

The peak effects of the 2C-B experience last for two to four hours. Any nausea and discomfort have generally faded by this point. Touch, smell, taste, color, and sound all tend to be enhanced during this time, and many people report feeling squarely “in the body”—aware of their muscles and nerves and merging with physical nature. Unlike on MDMA, sexual arousal can be maintained throughout the 2C-B experience.

During the peak, people report enhanced moods and feelings of stimulation, but with less “pushiness” than MDMA. People often describe 2C-B as far more malleable, allowing them to go in and out of baseline consciousness, sometimes abruptly, even during peak effects. Others find themselves dealing with difficult emotions such as anger, grief, and fear.

Communication can break down during the height of a 2C-B experience, although talking to others can become easier for some people. In any case, people usually see an increase in their empathy and sociability. Conceptual thinking, introspective insights, and spiritual ideation are also common—especially when alone. There may be a slight softening of the ego.

Coming down and after the trip

Pharmacology.

Phenethylamines like 2C-B are known as “simple” psychedelics for their one-ring structure—contrasted with the more complex structure of indoles (e.g. tryptamines). [12] [13] Some other phenethylamines include amphetamines, mescaline, mephedrone, ephedrine, and cathine and cathinone from khat. 2C-B gets its name from the two carbon atoms (2C) that join the phenyl ring to the amino group, and for the bromine atom (B) substituted at the R4 position. [14] Like the other 2Cs, 2C-B has methoxy groups at positions R2 and R5. [6]

Receptor binding

Not much is known about the pharmacodynamics of 2C-B, but it shows a binding affinity for the 5-HT2 serotonergic receptors. [14] Unlike the classical psychedelics, it selectively antagonizes (blocks) the 5-HT2A receptor subtype usually involved in hallucinogenic effects. [15] Its psychoactivity is thought to be at least partially related to the activation of 5-HT2C receptors or to signaling pathways coupled to 5-HT2A. [16] [17] Further activation of α1-adrenergic receptors may be responsible for 2C-B’s stimulant effects. [18]

Benefits & Risks

Though there isn’t much research into the psychological or physiological effects of 2C-B, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that suggests it could be beneficial for both therapeutic purposes and personal/spiritual development. Shulgin himself recommended the use of this compound in therapy and gave it to a handful of psychologists to use with patients. He also suggested that the drug could be used in conjunction with MDMA to ease the comedown and solidify any revelations brought on by the experience.

People have also reported profound spiritual and personal experiences during a 2C-B trip, including feelings of connections to the self, others, and the universe, which can last long after the trip has come to an end.

2C-B is metabolized by the monoamine oxidases (MAOs) A and B, so it likely poses a risk for people on MAO inhibitors (MAOIs). [19] [20] These include some types of antidepressants, as well as ayahuasca.

Research into the safety of 2C-B is otherwise lacking, which could have a lot to do with its legal status. [19] [21] What we do know about the drug is mostly anecdotal. For instance, some users report taking up to 10 times the highest recommended dose with no lingering health problems. [3] [7] [22] [23] While some fatalities have been linked to other substances in the 2C family (including 2C-T-7 and 2C-I-NBOMe), none have been attributed to 2C-B alone. [14] That said, virtually nothing is known about the medium- to long-term health risks and some users may be more susceptible than others. [14] [19]

One female user experienced severe headaches, brain dysfunction, and weak limbs within 48 hours of taking liquid 2C-B. [24] In a similar sort of time frame, a male user with no family history of psychosis began to experience auditory hallucinations, increased irritability, and paranoid delusions. [25] These symptoms persisted for two months until he was treated with the antipsychotic medication risperidone. It should be noted, however, that in neither of these highly unusual cases was the presence of 2C-B confirmed. [19]

As with other psychedelics, set and setting are pivotal to the safety of a 2C-B experience. It’s best to avoid this drug during times of psychological distress, or too soon after difficult life experiences. [4] Public settings should also be avoided, at least to begin with. [7]

Because 2C-B can inhibit one’s spatial coordination and attention span, a space as free from hazards as possible is the ideal setting for an experience. The drug’s mild anesthetic effect can sometimes allow injuries to go unnoticed. [11] [26] Driving is especially dangerous while under the influence and should always be avoided.

Therapeutic Use

Shulgin—who is known as the “Godfather of Ecstacy”— believed the compound’s relatively short duration and empathogenic effects would be of value to psychologists and psychotherapists. [5] He was especially enthusiastic about its synergy with MDMA and believed the insights from an MDMA experience could be reinforced by using 2C-B at the end of an MDMA session, or even in a separate session. [29] [7]

After developing the drug, Shulgin gave it to a small handful of psychologists who found that the compound created a “warm, empathetic bond between themselves and their patients.” [30] They also reported that 2C-B helped their patients “get in touch with suppressed emotions and repressed memories, thereby helping to resolve psychological problems.”

Anecdotally, one user reported that the post-peak period of the 2C-B experience was conducive to working through general personal development stuff, as well as “accessing ‘earlier stages of my self’ and being able to use it in a way that’s meaningful for my present-day self.” In an amateur survey of 48 people who agreed to take 2C-T-7 (another Shulgin chemical similar to 2C-B), six participants said they experienced therapeutic or healing effects, including the resolution of deep emotional issues.

Personal Growth

Many users find 2C-B to be a kind of cathartic self-therapy tool, fostering powerful and sometimes life-changing insights about themselves and the nature of their reality. [33] [34] [35] Feeling “at one with the universe” is common, as are fresh perspectives on negative personality traits, thought patterns, and destructive behaviors. [11]

The malleability of the 2C-B experience allows users to focus on positive thoughts over negative ones and leads to an understanding of the impact of habitual thought processes. [36] According to psychedelic researcher D. M. Turner, 2C-B can also be used to strengthen parts of the ego while dissolving others, ultimately resulting in a more positive self-image. [10]

In South Africa, 2C-B (as Ubulawu Nomathotholo) has been linked to revelatory visions of spirit animals and tribal ancestors, including meetings with the Xhosa creator deity. Following these “journeys,” users reported becoming more confident and resolving longstanding grief, among other personal benefits. [30]

Like MDMA, 2C-B promotes empathy and understanding between people. One mother who took the drug with her son—who had recently moved away—learned how to let go as a parent and accept his individuality. Importantly for their relationship, she came to appreciate him as a separate, self-contained being. [37] Others report its usefulness in strengthening bonds between couples.

At present, 2C-B doesn’t appear to be legal in any country. It is illegal in the United States, Canada, the European Union (except the Czech Republic and Portugal), Australia, and more.

History & Stats

2C-B remained largely underground throughout its early days. It was first encountered by the DEA in 1979, but—aside from the seizure of several clandestine laboratories—no legislative action was taken. [40]

When MDMA was banned in 1985, 2C-B’s popularity surged as a legal alternative. [41] [27] It was also developed as an aphrodisiac by the German pharmaceutical company Drittewelle (meaning “third wave,” interestingly enough!), and marketed under the brand names Erox , Nexus, and Performax. [30] [42] By the early 1990s, America had become the world’s largest consumer of this over-the-counter treatment for impotence and “frigidity,” although many were using it for its psychedelic effects. [30]

The FDA banned the remedy in 1993 and urged other countries to do the same. In South Africa, it had already become popular among Xhosa-speaking sangomas (or “diviners”), who used Drittewelle’s product instead of their own increasingly scarce traditional plant medicines. Specifically for them, the drug was repackaged and distributed as Ubulawu Nomathotholo : “Medicine of the Singing Ancestors.” [30] [42]

Between 1994 and 1995, 2C-B was added to Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act in the United States. [27] [43] South Africa and others followed with legislation of their own. In response, numerous research chemical analogs, such as βk-2C-B, were developed to circumvent the law. [44]

Current usage

According to the 2014 Global Drug Survey (of a limited sample of self-selected respondents who use psychoactive drugs), 2C-B ranks among the top 20 substances used in the past year in nine different countries. The highest prevalence was in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and the Netherlands. [45]

2C-B also appears to be one of the most commonly sourced substances on the darknet. [46] [47] [48]

“2C-B is a cheap MDMA substitute”

Although 2C-B has sometimes been sold as MDMA, the effects are substantially different. Also, 2C-B doesn’t tend to be much cheaper. [4] In the United States, it can reach similar prices to MDMA and sometimes even more. [49]

“2C-B causes violent aggression”

Can it be detected in a drug test.

2C-B cannot be detected in either standard or extended drug tests. While it could potentially trigger a false positive for amphetamines, this is unlikely given the small doses involved. [52]

The detection of 2C-B usually requires technical analysis by a specialist lab using GC/MS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry) or LC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry). [53] [54] [55] [56]

Can I test my 2C-B to see if it’s safe to take?

Testing your 2C-B is always good practice even when you trust your supplier. Reagent test kits from Bunk Police can identify hundreds of adulterants and substitutes —offering peace of mind and potentially saving your life.

The Mecke and Froehde reagents, for example, can help identify real 2C-B. Simply place a tiny amount of 2C-B into a sterile test tube or onto a sterile white ceramic surface and add a few drops of the reagent. 2C-B is the only drug known to turn this reagent a bright greenish-yellow color. [27] [28]

Can 2C-B cause psychological trauma?

Despairing thoughts, paranoid delusions, and frightening visuals (like facial distortions) may occur during a 2C-B trip. [57] [58] At very high doses, some have questioned their sanity. [59] One user even reported an alarming fear of anything alive—even plants. [7]

Nevertheless, the few cases of long-term psychosis attributed to 2C-B are highly questionable, and it’s not known that the drug was even involved.

To minimize negative experiences on 2C-B, always keep in mind the 6Ss of psychedelic use and prepare appropriately.

Are there risks?

2C-B affects the heart rate, blood pressure, and the central nervous system, which could make it unsafe for people with convulsive seizure disorders (e.g. epilepsy), heart problems, diabetes, schizophrenia, or a history of mental illness. See the Benefits & Risks section above for more information.

What is the best way to take 2C-B?

The most common way to take 2C-B is also the easiest: swallowing it as a liquid, tablet, or capsule. Other methods include snorting, vaporizing, and “plugging” (rectal administration).

Snorting 2C-B is almost unbearably painful because of its insolubility in water. However, the effects tend to be more intense, with a shorter onset, and a much smaller required dose. Shulgin suggested snorting the more water-soluble acetate or hydrobromide salt for the same effects with little to no pain. [3]

Vaporizing freebase 2C-B in a glass pipe is reportedly more potent and faster-acting than oral use, but with a shorter total duration. [60] “Plugging” liquid 2C-B into the rectum with a needleless syringe has similar effects, even on a full stomach. [61] [62]

Can I microdose with 2C-B?

Users who microdose with 2C-B have had mixed results, with some casual experimenters getting nothing out of the experience. [63] Others have reported crisper vision, enhanced tactile awareness, and a mental energy boost comparable to caffeine. [64] [65]

At this time, it’s unclear whether it’s worthwhile to microdose with 2C-B.

Does it produce tolerance?

Most but not all users report a tolerance effect from regular use (more than once every five to seven days). Since 2C-B doesn’t tend to be habit-forming, this isn’t usually a problem.

Can I mix it with other drugs?

Shulgin’s recommendation was to take it at the tail-end of an MDMA trip. Others have found it combines well with ketamine, making it easier to move without nausea and improving recollection of the K-hole. [10]

There are some drugs that 2C-B should not be mixed with, however. It is potentially very dangerous in combination with MAOIs, tramadol, mescaline, amphetamines, cocaine, and others.

What Is 2-CP?

  • The Potential Dangers

Is 2C-P Deadly?

  • Why Professional Treatment?

When a 24-year-old woman took 2C-P at a concert in the United Kingdom in 2017, she experienced a “bad trip.” A report indicated that after taking the potent psychedelic, she screeched like an animal, scraped thorns across her face and ate twigs. According to the Guardian , She died an hour before her 25th birthday.

While smaller amounts of ecstasy (MDMA) and ketamine were found in her system, she was believed to be the first person in the world to die from 2C-P.

While it is regarded as a lesser-known drug of the phenethylamine class, 2C-P is a powerful, enduring stimulant and hallucinogenic, capable of producing dangerous effects. There isn’t much research on this controversial, enigmatic substance, which belongs to a family of designer drugs known for its stimulant and hallucinogenic effects.

It’s worth noting that in 2012, 2C-P and other drugs of its kind were classified as Schedule I controlled substances by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), thanks to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act . The Schedule I designation indicates that 2C-P has no accepted medical use and carries a high potential for abuse.

In other words, it can produce addiction.

Plus, the little information that is available regarding 2-CP indicates that it can produce a range of effects, many of which can be dangerous, if not life-threatening.

2cp bad trip

The drug known as 2-CP was developed to mimic the euphoric effects of substances such as MDMA and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). It is a part of a family of designer drugs that are of the phenethylamine class. The “2C” designation was an acronym invented by Alexander Shulgin, who synthesized these 2C substances in around 1974. Shulgin is widely known for popularizing the use of MDMA.

The most common form of 2-CP is as a hydrochloride salt, which usually resembles a white powder or white crystals.

While Shulgin was a proponent of using MDMA and 2C drugs for therapeutic purposes, they gained popularity as “club drugs.”

Each drug in the 2C family, whether that is 2C-I, 2C-B, and 2C-P, each has its own, unique chemical properties. What differentiates 2C-P from the others is the exceptional duration of its effects. Its lasting effects are what makes 2C-P addictive and highly dangerous.

The Positive Effects of 2C-P

One report indicates that the hallucinogenic, psychedelic, and entheogenic effects peak at three to five hours when the drug is ingested, yet this peak lasts between five to 10 hours. What’s more, the overall 2C-P effects can last up to 20 hours. One report indicated that a 2C-P high could last for up to 24 hours.

Whatever the case, users report that 2C-P can make users experience open eye and closed-eye visualizations. The drug gives users an effect that is similar to MDMA but with heightened psychedelic visual effects and sensations.

2cp bad trip

Shulgin suggested that the intended dosage range for 2C-P should be between 6 to 10 milligrams (mg) in a book he co-authored with his wife named PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story (PiHKal stands for Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved).

An online database that documents the effects of psychoactive substances on humans indicates that 2C-P is capable of producing a range of effects from positive to negative.

When the drug is ingested at the range Shulgin suggests, the positive effects from 2C-P include the following, according to Erowid.org :

  • Mental and physical stimulation
  • Sensory enhancement
  • Increased mental clarity
  • Brightened colors, enhanced visual perception
  • Introspection and philosophical insights
  • Enhanced mood, euphoria
  • Enhanced tactile sensation
  • Increased giggling and laughing
  • Feelings of empathy
  • Increased sociability at moderate doses
  • Increased sense of creativity / artistic inspiration

The Potential Dangers of 2C-P

However, Shulgin also reported experiencing negative effects from 2C-P when he took a single 16 mg dose. It caused him to describe the event as “a physical disaster, not to be repeated.”

A forensic pathologist who testified in the case of the 24-year-old woman who died from 2C-P shed light on its negative effects. In addition to eliciting potent hallucinations, 2C-P can also cause agitation, an abnormally rapid heartbeat, and increased body temperature and blood pressure — effects endemic of a stimulant.

In addition to a host of neutral effects that come from use, such as a change in consciousness, open and closed-eye visuals, confusion, out-of-body experiences, restlessness, and auditory hallucinations, it can produce a litany of negative effects at higher doses, which include:

  • Stomach discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, gas
  • Muscle spasms, jaw clenching
  • Muscle fatigue, pain
  • Motor impairment
  • Nasal discomfort, nasal drip when the drug is snorted
  • Anxiety, fear, or paranoia
  • Severe mental confusion
  • Disturbing hallucination, mental visions
  • Severely uncomfortable stimulation (mental and physical)
  • Intense or overwhelming visual disturbances
  • Significantly elevated heart rate
  • Sweating, chills, flushing
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Vasoconstriction, increased blood pressure

The Effects of MDMA and Why It Relates to 2C-P

Not much is known about the true dangers of the 2C family of drugs, including its toxicity. The reason? When Shulgin developed 2Cs, there were no major investigations on the uses and adverse effects of these substances outside of his own experiments. There is not even a hint as to whether these drugs possess therapeutic effects.

The drug that is closest to 2C-P in terms of its effects and composition is MDMA.

The symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal that result from MDMA might be instructive in terms of what 2C drugs are capable of producing.

Those MDMA Symptoms Can Occur In Three Stages and Include:

  • Heightened senses
  • Hallucinations, especially tactile sensations
  • Feeling good
  • Heightened empathy
  • Emotional warmth
  • Anxiety or paranoia
  • Mental and physical relaxation
  • Increased energy
  • Restlessness

The Short-Term Physical Effects, Which Can Be Damaging, Include:

  • Muscle tension
  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Faster, shallower breathing
  • Feeling faint
  • Sweating and becoming dehydrated
  • Chills, like having the flu
  • Blurry or double vision
  • Impulsiveness

Once the Effects of Mdma Wear Off, You Will Experience Comedown Symptoms. Among Those Are:

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Cravings for the drug
  • Memory loss

2cp bad trip

2C-P may not be deadly, but anecdotal evidence suggests that it can produce life-threatening overdose symptoms. For example, seven teens overdosed on 2C-P at a concert in Connecticut in 2013.

According to a television report from a station in the area, “The concert, called “Adventure Land” began without incident but at around 10:30 p.m., four teenagers dropped to the ground almost simultaneously.”

First responders performed CPR or used a defibrillator to revive the victims.

What’s more, one study concluded that in lethal 2C drug cases, users exhibited “a syndrome consistent with excited delirium including severe agitation, aggression, violence, seizures, and hyperthermia.”

Also, the dangers associated with MDMA also suggest that 2C drugs like 2C-P can be life-threatening, particularly when they are mixed with other intoxicants.

With MDMA, The Life-Threatening Effects Can Include:

  • Heat stroke
  • Confusion or delirium
  • Aggressiveness
  • Strong, rapid pulse
  • No sweat even though the skin is very hot
  • Dry, flushed skin
  • Feeling or appearing faint

Why Professional Treatment Is Necessary

While not much is known about 2C-P, there is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest that it can be habit-forming, dangerous, and life-threatening as the effects it produces inculcates addiction.

Another unknown factor is the level of toxicity it can pose to the body. These factors indicate that professional treatment is vital to break you free from 2C-P addiction and the harrowing effects it can unleash.

This is especially the case if 2C-P is being abused with alcohol , stimulants , or opioids , as your life is at stake.

By enrolling in a professional recovery program, you can access comprehensive, specialized treatment backed by evidence. The initial stage of this medically and clinically supervised process is acute treatment , where the 2C-P and other toxins are removed from your body.

In acute treatment, you will be monitored by doctors, nurses, and other medical staff around the clock. Should any medical issues or painful withdrawal symptoms arise, they will be on hand to address them.

After this acute treatment period, you will be enrolled in clinical stabilization services or partial care where you will receive therapy through an array of services, which include:

2cp bad trip

2C-P is very difficult to dose properly.

Due to its unusually slow onset, long duration, and steep dose-response curve, it is strongly discouraged to re-dose 2C-P earlier than every 3 hours to a total of 2 milligrams above a previously evaluated dose. Also, even for experienced trippers, it is advised to not go above a common dose for the first time (see dosage table) per 70 kg body weight, as the session will last for several times longer compared to most psychedelics. Please see this section for more details.

2,5-Dimethoxy-4-propylphenethylamine (also known as 2C-P ) is a lesser-known novel psychedelic substance of the phenethylamine class. 2C-P is a relatively obscure member of the 2C-x family of psychedelic phenethylamines, which are closely related to the classical psychedelic mescaline . It is known as one of the most potent, dose-sensitive, and long-lasting of the series. Although the precise mechanism is not known, it is thought to produce its psychoactive effects by activating serotonin receptors in parts of the brain.

2C-P was first synthesized and tested for human activity by the American chemist Alexander Shulgin , who documented his findings in the 1991 book PiHKAL ("Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved"). [1] The reports found in the 2C-P PiHKAL entry remark on its depth and long onset and duration of action, with the commentary section describing 16 mg as a clear overdose with "physical consequences." The commentary also notes the small window separating an adequate dose from an excessive dose, suggesting it is relatively easy to overdose on.

Subjective effects include open and closed-eye visuals , time distortion , conceptual thinking , euphoria , and ego loss . User reports tend to characterize the effects of 2C-P in terms of its unusually long duration, powerful, sometimes overwhelming visuals, and intense "body load" consisting of nausea , muscle tension , and general bodily discomfort. Some reports suggest it may be easier to experience agitation and delirium on 2C-P than other 2C's, perhaps owing to the ease in which it can be mis-dosed. As a result, it is considered to have an unfavorable safety profile among psychedelics.

Very little data exists about the pharmacological properties, metabolism, and toxicity of 2C-P. Due its powerful effects and unusually long duration, 2C-P may be overly intense and difficult to use safely for those who are not highly experienced with hallucinogens . It is strongly advised to use harm reduction practices if using this substance. These include avoiding "eye-balling" (i.e. measuring the dose with the naked eye instead of a reliable milligram scale) and non-oral routes of administration . Volumetric liquid dosing is commonly recommended when dealing with substances of this potency.

2C-P or 2,5-dimethoxy-4-propylphenethylamine is a substituted phenethylamine featuring a phenyl ring bound to an amino (NH 2 ) group through an ethyl chain. 2C-P contains methoxy functional groups CH 3 O- attached to carbons R 2 and R 5 and a propyl chain attached to carbon R 4 of the phenyl ring. 2C-P belongs to the 2C family of phenethylamines which contain methoxy groups on the 2 and 5 positions of the benzene ring. [1]

Pharmacology

2C-P is a relatively potent and long acting psychedelic phenethylamine of the 2C family which possesses stimulant type effects as well. It was first described by Alexander Shulgin in his book PiHKAL .

2C-P has been shown to produce a variety of intense hallucinogenic type effects ranging from drastic changes in consciousness and perception, to open and closed eye visuals. 2C-P is considered to be one of the strongest 2C-x compounds dosage for dosage, rivaled only by 2C-TFM.

2C-P's psychedelic effects are believed to come from its efficacy at the 5-HT 2A receptor as a partial agonist . However, the role of these interactions and how it results in the psychedelic experience continues to remain elusive.

Subjective effects

2C-P's head space and visuals have been described as possessing more similarities to alkylated 2C's like 2C-E than halogenated members like 2C-B or 2C-I .

Disclaimer: The effects listed below cite the Subjective Effect Index ( SEI ), an open research literature based on anecdotal user reports and the personal analyses of PsychonautWiki contributors . As a result, they should be viewed with a healthy degree of skepticism.

It is also worth noting that these effects will not necessarily occur in a predictable or reliable manner, although higher doses are more liable to induce the full spectrum of effects. Likewise, adverse effects become increasingly likely with higher doses and may include addiction, severe injury, or death ☠.

Physical effects

  • Stimulation - 2C-P is considered to be very energetic and stimulating in a fashion that is comparable to that of 2C-B , 2C-I and other substances within the 2C-x family, being encouraged instead of forced.
  • Spontaneous bodily sensations - In comparison to 2C-E or 2C-B , the "body high" of 2C-P can be considered as mild although still capable of becoming very powerful and highly physically euphoric. It is similar yet distinct from the "body high" experienced on 2C-E , 2C-B , and LSD . The sensation itself can be described as intense and will manifest itself in the form of a continuously shifting tingling sensation that travels up and down the body in spontaneous waves. This is coupled by an equally intense yet slightly uncomfortable energetic pins and needles sensation that constantly encompasses a person’s entire body as well as a slight warm glow that manifests itself much less consistently than the other two physical components. All of these are capable of becoming very physically euphoric.
  • Tactile enhancement - This effect is particularly prominent but capable of going in both pleasurable and uncomfortable directions. This can result in pleasurable tactile sensations but also enhances bodily aches and pains which one may not have previously been aware of to the point of extreme discomfort.
  • Bodily control enhancement
  • Increased bodily temperature
  • Increased heart rate [ citation needed ]
  • Increased blood pressure [ citation needed ]
  • Nausea - Mild to extreme nausea is consistently reported when consumed in moderate to high dosages and either passes once the user has vomited or gradually fades by itself as the peak sets in.
  • Increased libido - A common theme found in many 2C-P reports is the way in which it can heighten and enhance sexual arousal. When experienced, this sensation is not overwhelming or out of control but simply remains something that the user is constantly aware of. If sexual activities of any kind are engaged in, they are have been reported to be immensely more pleasurable than anything that can be achieved in a sober state.
  • Pupil dilation
  • Teeth grinding - A very common effect of 2C-P, and more pronounced with 2C-P than other 2C's or psychedelic substances in general. Can become very uncomfortable, especially with higher doses.

Visual effects

  • Enhancements
  • Colour enhancement
  • Pattern recognition enhancement
  • Visual acuity enhancement
  • Distortions
  • Drifting ( melting , flowing , breathing and morphing ) - In comparison to other psychedelics, this effect can be described as highly detailed, slow and smooth in motion, static in appearance and unrealistic/cartoon-like in style.
  • After images
  • Symmetrical texture repetition
  • Color shifting
  • Scenery slicing
  • Depth perception distortions

The visual geometry present can be described as being more similar in appearance to that of 4-AcO-DMT or ayahuasca than that of LSD , 2C-B or 2C-I . They can be comprehensively described as structured in their organization, organic in geometric style, intricate in complexity, large in size, fast and smooth in motion, colorful in scheme, glossy in color, sharp in their edges and equally rounded and angular in their corners. It gives off a contradictory natural and synthetic feel that at higher dosages are significantly more likely to result in states of Level 8B visual geometry over Level 8A . There seems to be visual geometry that is distinct from 2C-E , psilocin and ayahuasca and can be described as faster moving and more intense in proportion to cognitive and physical effects than 2C-E .

Hallucinatory states

2C-P produces a full range of high level hallucinatory states in a fashion that is more consistent and reproducible than that of many other commonly used psychedelics. This holds particularly true in comparison to other 2C-x phenethylamines such as 2C-B or 2C-I . These effects include:

  • Machinescapes
  • Transformations
  • Internal hallucination ( autonomous entities ; settings, sceneries, and landscapes ; perspective hallucinations and scenarios and plots ) - In comparison to other psychedelics such as LSD , 2C-P is extremely high in hallucinations embedded within visual geometry . This particular effect commonly contains hallucinations with scenarios, settings, concepts and autonomous entity contact. They are more common within dark environments and can be described as lucid in believability, interactive in style and almost exclusively of a personal, religious, spiritual, science-fiction, fantasy, surreal, nonsensical or transcendental nature in their overall theme.
  • Unspeakable horrors - This is an effect that is typically associated with deliriants rather than psychedelics . Based on anecdotal reports, they only tend to occur at higher doses and are likely a result of the pronounced temperature increasing properties this substance has compared to other 2C-x and psychedelics , which can lend readily to delirium -like states.

Cognitive effects

  • Analysis enhancement
  • Conceptual thinking
  • Creativity enhancement
  • Autonomous voice communication
  • Emotion enhancement
  • Immersion enhancement
  • Increased music appreciation
  • Multiple thought streams
  • Novelty enhancement
  • Personal bias suppression
  • Personal meaning enhancement
  • Thought acceleration
  • Thought loops
  • Time distortion
  • Wakefulness

Auditory effects

  • Hallucinations

Transpersonal effects

  • Spirituality enhancement
  • Perception of interdependent opposites
  • Unity and interconnectedness

Toxicity and harm potential

The toxicity and long-term health effects of recreational 2C-P use do not seem to have been studied in any scientific context and the exact toxic dose is unknown. This is because 2C-P is a research chemical with very little history of human usage.

Anecdotal reports suggests that there are no negative health effects attributed to simply trying the substance by itself at low to moderate doses and using it very sparingly (but nothing can be completely guaranteed). Independent research should always be done to ensure that a combination of two or more substances is safe before consumption.

It is strongly recommended that one use harm reduction practices when using this substance.

2C-P is difficult to dose properly, and requires patience. Be aware that impulsive overdosing can lead to an overdose. Please structure a calculated dosage regimen and stick to it.

  • 2C-P has a steep dose-response curve : As little as a few extra milligrams separating a manageable dose and an overdose. [2] Users who wish to take high doses of this compound are advised to titrate upward slowly, use reliable milligram scales to measure doses, and avoid non-oral routes of administration such as insufflation or injection.
  • 2C-P has a very slow onset : The peak effects reportedly do not occur for 1 to 3 hours. [2] Thus it's advised to wait for at least 3 hours before re-dosing is considered, and even longer for full stomach content.

The LD 50 of 2C-P has not been established. However, it is believed that 2C-P is likely to have a smaller therapeutic window compared to other 2C's, meaning a lethal dose may be achieved more easily.

In 2017, a 25-year old British female died following the ingestion of a large dose of 2C-P at a music festival. [4] No source reported clear evidence that 2C-P by itself led to the immediate death of the female.

Dependence and abuse potential

As a serotonergic psychedelic , 2C-P is considered to have a low potential for abuse and dependence.

Tolerance to the effects of 2C-P is built almost immediately after ingestion. After that, it takes about 3 days for the tolerance to be reduced to half and 7 days to be back at baseline (in the absence of further consumption). 2C-P produces cross-tolerance with all psychedelics , meaning that after the consumption of 2C-P all psychedelics will have a reduced effect.

Dangerous interactions

Warning: Many psychoactive substances that are reasonably safe to use on their own can suddenly become dangerous and even life-threatening when combined with certain other substances. The following list provides some known dangerous interactions (although it is not guaranteed to include all of them).

Always conduct independent research (e.g. Google , DuckDuckGo , PubMed ) to ensure that a combination of two or more substances is safe to consume. Some of the listed interactions have been sourced from TripSit .

  • Lithium - Lithium is commonly prescribed for the treatment of bipolar disorder . There is a large body of anecdotal evidence that suggests taking it with psychedelics significantly increases the risk of psychosis and seizures . As a result, this combination is strictly discouraged.
  • Cannabis - Cannabis may have an unexpectedly strong and unpredictable synergy with the effects of 2C-P. Caution is advised with this combination as it can significantly increase the risk of adverse psychological reactions like anxiety , paranoia , panic attacks , and psychosis . Users are advised to start off with only a fraction of their normal cannabis dose and take long breaks between hits to avoid unintentional overdose.
  • Stimulants - Stimulants like amphetamine , cocaine or methylphenidate affect many parts of the brain and alter dopaminergic function. This combination can increase the risk of anxiety , paranoia , panic attacks , and thought loops . This interaction may also result in an elevated risk of mania and psychosis . [ citation needed ]
  • Tramadol - Tramadol is well-documented to lower the seizure threshold [5] and psychedelics may act to trigger seizures in susceptible individuals. [ citation needed ]

Legal status

2C-P is not scheduled under the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances. It is considered to exist in a legal grey area in many countries, meaning that while it is not specifically illegal, individuals may still be charged for its possession under certain circumstances such as under analogue laws and with the intent to sell or consume.

  • Austria : 2C-P is illegal to possess, produce and sell under the NPSG (Neue-Psychoaktive-Substanzen-Gesetz Österreich). In its Schedule II, the further specifying NPSV (Neue-Psychoaktive-Substanzen-Verordnung Österreich) explicitly bans all substituted phenetylamines. [6]
  • Canada : 2C-P would be considered Schedule III as it is a derivative of 2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine. [7]
  • China : As of October 2015, 2C-P is a controlled substance in China. [8]
  • Denmark : 2C-P is on the list of Schedule B controlled substances. [9]
  • Germany : 2C-P is controlled under Anlage I BtMG ( Narcotics Act, Schedule I ) [10] as of December 13, 2014. [11] It is illegal to manufacture, possess, import, export, buy, sell, procure or dispense it without a license. [12]
  • Japan : 2C-P is a controlled substance in Japan effective March 25th, 2015. [13]
  • Latvia : 2C-P is a Schedule I controlled substance. [14]
  • Switzerland : 2C-P is a controlled substance specifically named under Verzeichnis E. [15]
  • Turkey: 2C-P is a classed as drug and is illegal to possess, produce, supply, or import. [16]
  • United Kingdom : 2C-P is a Class A drug in the United Kingdom as a result of the phenethylamine catch-all clause. [17]
  • United States : 2C-P is a Schedule I controlled substance. [18] This means 2C-P is illegal to manufacture, buy, possess, process, or distribute without a license from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

2C drugs – such as 2CB, 2CI and 2CE – have hallucinogenic and stimulant effects

Also called:

  • Seventh-Heaven

How the drug works varies from person to person

How it looks, tastes and smells

What does it look like.

  • A small pill
  • A powder, usually white but not always
  • A liquid, but this is rare

2C drugs are normally sold as pills or powders, but this can vary. For example, 2CB and 2CT-7 have been sold as white powders or small 5mg pills.

A liquid form of 2CI has been reported, but this is rare.

What does it taste/smell like?

Users say that 2Cs can give a burning sensation and be painful to snort.

How do people take it?

The 2C drugs can be snorted, swallowed or smoked.

How it feels

How does it make you feel.

The 2C family of drugs are classed as psychedelics (hallucinogens) but they can also produce stimulant effects.

As hallucinogens, they can make you experience reality in a distorted way that may cause hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that aren’t there).

As stimulants, they can make you feel awake, alert and affectionate towards people around you.

The 2C drugs can make you:

  • energised and alert
  • extra aware of colours, sounds and smells
  • very sensitive to touch and sexually aroused

They can also make you:

  • happy and in tune with your surroundings (similar to ecstasy ), especially if taken in smaller doses
  • see the world around you as being distorted, this is sometimes called ‘visuals’
  • hallucinate, especially if taken in larger doses

As with all psychedelic drugs, it’s very hard to predict how you’ll feel when you take a 2C drug – and some 2Cs cause more psychedelic effects than others. The more you take, the more intense and uncontrollable the experience will be.

How does it make people behave?

Because 2C drugs produce effects that are similar to both ecstasy and psychedelic drugs like LSD , people can behave like they’re on ecstasy or LSD – or both.

How long the effects last and the drug stays in your system depends on how much you’ve taken, your size and what other drugs you may have also taken.

Physical health risks

Taking 2C drugs involves risks. Here’s what we know:

They can cause headaches, nausea and vomiting.

There is a risk of over-stimulating the heart and circulation.

It’s not yet known if 2C drugs cause any long term damage, but there have been numerous hospitalisations associated with their use.

Mental health risks

Because the 2Cs are psychedelic drugs, anyone with a history of mental illness should be particularly careful.

Here’s what we know:

Panic attacks have been reported.

Severe psychosis has been reported.

Confused, agitated or even delirious states have been reported when the drugs have been taken in high doses.

Evidence from other drugs – such as ecstasy and LSD – suggest that regular users of the drugs become tired, low in mood and anxious when they stop using, or if they use in high doses.

What is 2C family cut with?

Information about 2C purity is difficult to get hold of.

Is it dangerous to mix with other drugs?

Mixing drugs is always risky but some mixtures are more dangerous than others.

What happens if I mix 2C family and

Can you get addicted.

There’s very little current information about 2C drugs’ addictiveness.

Tolerance and psychological dependence have been reported in stimulant drugs, such as ecstasy , that act like 2C drugs but little is known about the effects of 2C drugs themselves.

This is a Class A drug, which means it's illegal to have for yourself, give away or sell.

Possession can get you up to 7 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both.

Supplying someone else, even your friends, can get you life in prison, an unlimited fine or both.

Like drink-driving, driving when high is dangerous and illegal. If you’re caught driving under the influence, you may receive a heavy fine, driving ban, or prison sentence.

If the police catch people supplying illegal drugs in a home, club, bar or hostel, they can potentially prosecute the landlord, club owner or any other person concerned in the management of the premises.

Everybody has heard of MDMA (ecstasy) and LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) — they’ve become staples in the world of mind-altering substances.

But there’s another popular psychoactive substance that’s been residing in the shadows since the 1980s. This substance is called 2C-B.

The effects of 2C-B are often described as being a mid-point between the empathogenic effects of MDMA and the hallucinogenic effects of LSD.

So what exactly is 2CB? Is it safe?

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about 2C-B — including how it works, what it feels like, and how to use it safely.

What is 2C-B?

2C-B (4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine) is a synthetic psychedelic substance derived from mescaline. It was invented in 1974 by a man named Alexander Shulgin — the godfather of MDMA and creator of the entire 2C- family of substances.

Shulgin invented well over 200 psychoactive compounds in his research lab dubbed “The Farm.”

Shulgin considered 2C-B to be one of his greatest creations. In one of his books — PiHKAL (phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved) — he listed 2C-B among his “magic half dozen”.

The other five include mescaline, DOM, 2C-E, 2C-I, 2C-T2 , and 2C-T7 .

The effects of 2C-B have been described as a combination between LSD and MDMA — but this is a simplification. In reality, the 2C-B experience is entirely unique.

The qualities of 2C-B made it popular as a sex-enhancement drug in the 80s. The German pharmaceutical company Drittewelle started producing the drug under the name “Nexus.” It was sold in sex shops as a way to boost libido, sexual connection and increase stamina and energy. 2C-B is still considered by many to be the best psychedelic to use during sex of all time.

In Shulgin’s own words , “[2C-B] is, in my opinion, one of the most graceful, erotic, sensual, introspective compounds I have ever invented.”

2C-B reached mainstream popularity sometime after 1985 when MDMA was officially banned. It was used as a legal alternative to MDMA. 2C-B and the rest of the 2C- family were later banned in 1995.

2C-B: Specs & Technical Details

2cp bad trip

  • 🐍 I understand why psychedelics should be treated with respect
  • ⚖️ I’m familiar with the laws surrounding psychedelics in my country & state
  • 🍄 I’m familiar and confident in the dose I’m taking (dose range for 2C-B is 5-20 mg)
  • 🧪 I’ve tested a sample of the substance I’m using with  a drug testing kit
  • 💊 I’m not mixing any medications or other substances with 2C-B
  • 🏔 I’m in a safe & comfortable environment with people I trust
  • 🐺 One of the members of my group is responsible and sober (AKA a  trip sitter )
  • 📆 I have nothing important scheduled for after the trip
  • 🧠 I’m in a sound & healthy state of mind
  • 🌶 I’m aware of the increased risk of heatstroke & dehydration with this compound
  • 📚 I’m familiar with the four pillars of responsible psychedelic use —  set, setting, sitter, & substance .
  • ⏳ Know the timeline — the effects of 2C-B can last between 4 and 8 hours
  • 🙅‍♀️ Know when to avoid stimulants — don’t take 2C-B if you have underlying heart, neurological, or psychiatric disorders

The dosage range for 2C-B is between 5 mg and 35 mg. Most tablets or capsules contain 5 mg of 2C-B each.

Lower doses of around 5 mg have effects most similar to MDMA or Adderall, while the higher doses (more than 15 mg) offer formidable hallucinogenic effects comparable to LSD, psilocybin, or mescaline.

The dosage range of 2C-B includes:

  • 1 mg — Microdose
  • 5 mg —  Threshold dose (stimulant-like effects)
  • 5–20 mg — Standard psychoactive dose (hallucinogenic & stimulant effects)
  • 20–35 mg —  High psychedelic dose (strong hallucinogenic & stimulant action)
  • 35–60 mg —  Heroic dose (unpredictable effects, not recommended)

2C-B has a high level of safety. Shulgin, the inventor of the drug, reportedly took 100 mg by accident. This is a dose nearly three times what’s considered a high dose for the substance. He didn’t suffer any severe side effects from the experience.

With that said, higher doses can be intense. Most people who use more than 35 or 40 mg of the drug report intense, often scary, or confronting hallucinations.

The higher the dose, the stronger the visuals. Some could even describe the visuals at higher doses to be “cartoon-like” — which is similar to the visuals experienced with higher doses of mescaline.

2cp bad trip

The effects of 2C-B could be described as a combination of MDMA and LSD.

While there’s truth to this, it’s not perfectly accurate. 2C-B has empathogenic effects like MDMA and hallucinogenic effects like LSD — but the experience is unique in and of itself. The overall effects of 2C-B share much more resemblance to mescaline.

As part of our ongoing experience surveys, we ask our readers to share their experiences to better understand the effects and common dosages of substances.

Most of the responses we’ve received throughout our 2C-B survey had a positive sentiment. Many people taking part in our surveys and in the psychedelic community at large consider 2C-B to be their favorite psychedelic.

Commonly 2C-B Experiences Include:

  • Increased energy (92%)
  • A greater sense of empathy with others (86%)
  • Introspection (80%)
  • Visual hallucinations (78%)
  • Sexual arousal (78%)
  • Laughter (76%)
  • Auditory hallucinations (67%)
  • Ego death or dissolution (65%)

2C-B is most often used in place of MDMA at concerts, parties, or music festivals. The stimulating and euphoric effects make people feel more social and engaged, it creates a strong sense of empathy and connectedness with other people, and it won’t inhibit your ability to sleep at the end of the night.

Here’s what you can expect to feel while taking 2C-B:

Introspection

Users often report feelings of introspection, ego-dissolution , and a stronger sense of empathy and connection with others. It’s not uncommon for people using 2C-B to come to some sort of “realization” about their life. This realization may remain after the trip, but it may also be forgotten.

In a clinical setting, 2C-B is thought to connect the user with former emotions and repressed memories.

Hallucinations

2C-B is a hallucinogen through and through. In smaller doses these effects are limited, but higher doses of 2C-B produce intense changes in sensory perception . This includes sight, sound, and touch.

The visuals of 2C-B remind me of the videogame Borderlands — where some details pop much more than others and make the world look almost as though it was traced over with a pencil

2cp bad trip

Sometimes 2C-B can feel a little bit “speedy” or “tweaky” — especially in the higher doses.

2C-B is also used for its sexual-enhancement purposes as a way to explore a deeper connection between partners and enhance libido and physical stamina.

  • Disorientation

Reports from people who took part in our survey that used very high doses (40 mg or higher) or mixed 2C-B with other psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin often mention the experience to be “disorientating” (37%).

2C-B isn’t used medically because of its current standing as a Schedule I substance in the United States. It’s classified under equivalent filings in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Europe.

The drug’s creator, Alexander Shulgin, suggested 2C-B was a good follow-up treatment in psychotherapy after MDMA. He suggested 2C-B as a way to open up the emotional, intuitive and archetypal area of your psyche to help solve the problems uncovered during the MDMA session.

More research is needed before we can make any reasonable assumptions about the potential for using 2C-B in psychotherapy.

Yes, 2C-B is a strong psychedelic — especially in higher doses. However, when used within the standard psychoactive range (5–15 mg), 2C-B is unlikely to lead to what can be considered a “bad trip.”

The higher you go over the 15 mg dose, the more likely you are to experience challenging or uncomfortable experiences. The hallucinations on 2C-B can escalate very quickly at higher doses.

Sometimes, bad trips are the result of adulterants (ingredients you weren’t expecting to be in there). Samples of 2C-B have been shown to contain substances such as methamphetamines, MDA, PMA, PMMA, NBOMe , or various opiates.

You should also always test a sample of your 2C-B using a reagent test liquid before you use it. It’s impossible to know what’s in a pill or powder without testing.

Testing 2C-B is very easy to do, it’s cheap, and it only requires you to sacrifice trace amounts of your tablet or powder — only a sample the size of a grain of sand is necessary to run the safety tests that could save your life.

2cp bad trip

One of the biggest benefits of using 2C-B over MDMA is the lack of a hangover the following morning.

Of our respondents, only 7% reported any negative impact the following morning after using doses lower than 35 mg of 2C-B. A big reason for this comes down to the fact that 2C-B rarely interferes with sleep. Getting a good night of rest after using 2C-B is one of the best ways to avoid hangovers.

With that said, hangovers are still possible — and are especially common with the higher doses. Of the survey respondents that too more than 35 mg of 2C-B, nearly 28% of them had a hangover the following morning.

The best way to avoid a 2C-B hangover is to drink plenty of water throughout the experience and ensure you’re getting a full 8 hours of sleep afterward. Taking some electrolytes or magnesium before you go to bed can go a long way as well.

2C-B usually lasts between 4 and 8 hours.

The effects usually begin to appear within about 45 minutes to an hour after taking it and peak around the 2-hour mark.

Peak effects last between 1 and 2 hours before tapering off. The comedown on 2C-B is very slow and gradual — which is considered one of the advantages of this substance. Most amphetamines or other stimulants tend to produce a rapid comedown — which can make users feel depressed. 2C-B is much more gradual and gentle.

2C-B comes as either a white crystalline powder or pressed tablets.

Tablets contain either 5, 10, 20, or 25 mg of 2C-B each — so a normal dose can range anywhere from 1–7 tablets. Always check the dose of your tablet before you take it.

The powder is usually used in a “parachute” — which involves weighing the dose of powder on a small scale and wrapping it up into a rolling paper. This is then taken just like you would a capsule, by essentially swallowing it whole.

Other people prefer to fill their own capsules using the raw powder or snorting it (insufflation). Be very careful when snorting any substance. The effects will be much stronger and appear much more quickly. Take a lower dose than you normally would and give it time to take effect. It’s easy to take too much using this method.

In general, we advise against snorting any substance. It’s far too easy to take too much, and it can be extremely damaging to the nasal cavity.

Additionally, always weigh your dose using a small scale if you’re taking the raw powder. Never attempt to eyeball your dose of 2C-B of any powdered drugs. Scales are cheap (less than $20) and could mean the difference between having a positive experience and ending up in a hospital.

2C-B can also be vaporized — but this isn’t a common way of using it, and the long-term health effects of taking 2C-B this way aren’t well understood. Many compounds will change when heated like this, and the byproducts of vaporized 2C-B are not well understood.

It’s best to stick to the tried and tested oral route when taking 2C-B.

2cp bad trip

2C-B is just one of many substances in its family. Most of them were invented around the same time by Alexander Shulgin and documented in one of his books PiHKAL .

All 2C- substances contain methoxy groups on the 2 and 5 positions of a benzene ring of its chemical structure. They each have a unique chemical group attached to the 4th position on the benzene ring, which is what differentiates them in terms of their chemical structure and effect profile.

When various government regulators started banning 2C-B, they did so by banning the entire 2C-x family — as defined by the chemical structure above.

The most notable members of the 2C- family include:

  • 2C-B — this is by far the most popular member of the family.
  • 2C-C — this 2c compound differentiates itself through its relaxing, even mild sedative action and powerful visuals.
  • 2C-E —  this 2C compound is milder than 2C-B, has a slightly higher likelihood of side effects, and lasts about 3 hours longer.
  • 2C-I — these substances tend to produce effects similar to LSD but less introspective. The most common is 2C-I-NBOMe, which has been proven to be dangerous & should be avoided
  • 2C-P —  a strong, but mellow psychedelic with empathogen underpinnings.
  • 2C-T — there are several iterations of this compound, including 2C-T-2, 2C-T-3, 2C-T-4, 2C-T-7, & 2C-T-16. The most popular, by far, is 2CT-7.

List of all 2C-Substances

How strong is 2c-b vs. other psychedelics.

The intensity of effects from 2CB increases steadily along with the dose.

Lower doses (5 mg) resemble Adderall or MDMA and don’t produce strong visuals.

The higher the dose, the more psychedelic it gets. The 35 mg dose is a potent psychedelic — and very high doses (50 mg or more) are profoundly psychedelic and have even been known to induce out-of-body experiences.

2cp bad trip

2C-B is often compared to LSD because the visual effects of these two drugs are very similar. Users experience light trails, geometric patterns, and objects that appear to merge together.

The intensity of the trip is very similar for these two drugs, but 2C-B is generally much more euphoric. Some people argue the euphoria induced by 2C-B isn’t “earned.” This means you don’t actually have to do anything to feel the euphoria; it’s merely a byproduct of the substance itself.

With LSD, the euphoria needs to be earned through experience and mindset. It doesn’t have an inherent euphoric quality to it, so those without the right mindset may not feel any euphoria whatsoever.

In terms of dose, LSD is many times more potent than 2C-B. The psychoactive dose of LSD is measured in sub-milligram doses, while the threshold dose for 2C-B is around 5 mg.

2cp bad trip

Most people suggest the effects of 2C-B are a combination of LSD and MDMA. However, it’s more accurate to suggest the effects of 2C-B resemble mescaline — which is actually the molecule used as inspiration for creating the entire 2C class of drugs, to begin with.

2C-B is more stimulating than mescaline and has much less “headspace.” Headspace refers to the introspective and existential thoughts that accompany the psychedelic experience.

Both 2C-B and mescaline are thought of as being “gentle” when compared to other psychedelics and the visuals are very similar between the two.

In lower doses, their visuals are very “flowy”, while higher doses are much more “cartoon-like.”

2cp bad trip

2C-B is often used as an alternative to MDMA (ecstasy) at concerts, music festivals, or parties. Lower doses of 2C-B are the most similar to MDMA for creating a greater sense of connectedness with the people around you. Both substances produce a feeling of euphoria, can enhance the enjoyment of music, and stimulate the sensual feedback from touch.

The more 2C-B you take, the further the experience diverges from MDMA. High doses are very psychedelic and can make being at public events very uncomfortable — unlike MDMA.

One of the main benefits of 2C-B over MDMA is that users usually don’t experience difficulty falling asleep after the experience.

Is 2C-B Safe?

There are no reported overdose deaths from people who took 2C-B. Additionally, the few clinical trials that are available involving 2C-B have all reported the drug had little to no side effects and that the drug had a high level of safety.

Anecdotal reports on sites like Reddit, as well as through our own surveys, suggest some people prefer to take large doses of the drug (over 50 mg) — without experiencing any severe side effects.

The lethal dose of 2C-B has never been found.

Some users, including Shulgin, have reported taking as much as 100 mg of 2C-B without serious side effects. However, these doses are rarely enjoyable and can even be quite scary.

2C-B has been around since the 1970s, and while it didn’t really become popular until the 90s, it still has over 30 years of mainstream use behind it. If 2C-B was inherently dangerous, it would be crystal clear by now.

With that said, there is a serious lack of research available on the safety of 2C-B. There are virtually no toxicology studies available. Due to the heavily restricted status of this substance, it’s unlikely we’re going to see this research anytime in the near future.

This isn’t the case with other 2C substances — such as 2C-E and 2C-I — which have proven themselves dangerous over the years.

With that said, 2C-B isn’t without its risks.

The main risk of this compound is adulteration (mixing or swapping other substances into 2C-B tablets or powder).

It’s not uncommon for someone to order 2C-B online only to receive something completely different in the mail. You can never trust what’s inside your pills or powders unless you test it first. And even with testing, you can’t be 100% sure it’s free from harmful chemicals.

→ Learn how to test a sample of 2C-B for adulterants

Certain drugs or medications may also interact negatively with 2C-B.

This substance is largely metabolized by an enzyme called monoamine oxidase (MAO) [ 2 ]. It’s the main enzyme responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. People taking MAO inhibitor medications (a type of antidepressant) may have a hard time metabolizing 2C-B — which could lead to side effects.

2C-B is also likely to interact negatively with other stimulating substances, such as amphetamines (Adderall), MDMA, MDA, cocaine, caffeine, and nicotine. Combining these substances could lead to side effects and harm involved with increased heart rate and blood pressure, changes in breathing patterns, jitteriness and muscle tension, dehydration, headaches, blood sugar regulation, and anxiety or panic.

Mixing 2CB with other psychedelics like LSD, mescaline, or magic mushrooms can lead to much stronger hallucinations. This can cause intense fear, panic, or anxiety.

It’s wise to avoid any other substances while taking 2C-B to avoid negative interactions. This includes alcohol, cigarettes, and prescription medications.

People taking heart medications, immune system regulators, antibiotics, or ADHD medications should avoid 2C-B altogether.

  • Fear, panic, or anxiety
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Rapid heart rate
  • High blood pressure

2C-B is not inherently addictive — however, people can form addictions to any mind-altering substance, including 2C-B.

There really isn’t such a thing as a “good drug” or a “bad drug.” Substances like 2C-B are just molecules that exist in the world around us. It’s our relationship to them and the way we use them that can be described as “healthy” or “unhealthy.”

An unhealthy relationship with a substance like 2C-B would involve regular, repeated use of the substance either out of compulsion or to find a release from reality.

This is essentially what addiction is. They’re using a substance to escape the way they feel or to escape a reality they deem “undesirable.”

2C-B makes us happy, carefree, relaxed, social, and euphoric. It changes our perspective of the world and allows us to forget our biggest fears and stressors.

While this can be extremely beneficial for helping someone acknowledge the source of their problems internally and acts as a reminder that life, in its essence, is good — it can also become a crutch for people with more of a nihilistic or doomer perspective on life.

Compulsive use of any substance would be an example of having an unhealthy relationship with the substance. It’s what defines addiction.

Psychedelics like 2C-B should be used for personal growth and healing — not to escape reality.

2C-B & Physical Addiction: Dependence & Tolerance

There are two types of addiction — behavioral addiction and physical addiction.

As described above, behavioral addiction is the type of addiction we can have for the way a substance or activity makes us feel. Our body isn’t dependent on the substance, but we still seek it out in order to feel a certain way. We can also become behaviorally addicted to gambling, sex, masturbation, or shopping.

Physical addiction is differentiated from behavioral addiction in that there is a physical change to the body’s homeostatic default settings in response to the drug. When we take a substance repeatedly, the body makes changes to adapt to the presence of the substance. This is called dependence because we depend on having the drug in our system to maintain balance. As soon as the drug wears off, we’re no longer in balance — causing side effects referred to as withdrawal.

2C-B can eventually lead to physical addiction if used repetitively over long periods of time.

2cp bad trip

All 2C substances are illegal globally. The entire family of research chemicals was originally banned in the United States in 1995. 2C-B was specifically added to the UN Convention of Psychotropic Substances in 2001 . This led to the banning of this substance in all UN-member countries.

In the US, 2C-B is listed as a Schedule I drug — along with heroin, LSD, and cocaine.

It’s classified as a Schedule III substance in Canada, which means it’s only available for research purposes.

In the United Kingdom, 2C-B is a Class A drug — which implies the drug poses a significant danger to public health and brings the most severe punishments to those caught in possession of the drug.

Related: What is psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy?

There isn’t much research available on 2C-B, but we do have a general understanding of how it works.

Most psychedelics work by activating the 5-HT2A serotonin receptors. This is the primary mechanism of action employed by substances, including LSD, DMT, and psilocybin.

2C-B and related phenethylamines like mescaline have a much weaker action on this receptor. This suggests there are other mechanisms involved with the drug’s hallucinogenic effects. Some studies even suggest 2C-B may act as an inhibitor of the 5-HT2A receptor [ 3 ].

Some studies suggest 2C-B activates another serotonin receptor called 5-HT2C — which also produces hallucinogenic effects [ 4 ].

Other serotonin receptors may also be involved, such as the 5-HT1A receptors, which could be involved in the emotional changes induced by 2C-B [ 5 ]. This substance is reported to influence the emotional response through both top-down and bottom-up cognitive processes.

Compared to other 2C-x drugs, 2C-B is the second most potent agonist of serotonin receptors only to 2C-I. 2C-D and 2C-H have a much lower affinity for these receptors.

2C-B has also been shown to have some action at the alpha-adrenergic receptors [3]. This is likely one of the main mechanisms involved with the substance’s stimulating effects.

Research on 2C-B is seriously lacking. Despite how popular this substance is, there are no clinical trials or even toxicology studies to date. The only data we have available comes from anecdotal reports, observational studies, and in vitro research. Everybody should test their drugs before using them to avoid mistakenly consuming toxic alternatives.

The best way to test a sample of 2C-B is to use a reagent test kit. Only a small sample of the drug is needed to run the test (the size of a grain of sand).

Regent tests won’t tell you the purity of a substance. They can only tell you whether or not a sample contains a certain substance or not.

The best reagent to use is the Marquis reagent. It will turn a yellowish-green color in the presence of 2C-B. The reagent will turn purple if the sample contains MDMA, and NBOMe substances will turn red.

Most drug tests won’t detect 2C-B. Only specialized drug tests using mass spectrometry or gas chromatography will be able to differentiate 2C-B in a blood or urine sample.

There have been reports of 2C-B triggering a false-positive on amphetamine tests, but this is very rare.

With that said, if you’re expecting a drug test for any reason, it would be wise to avoid 2C-B.

All psychoactive drugs have an inherent level of risk associated with their use. 2C-B has stimulating effects that could be dangerous for people with heart disease or who are taking heart medications.

The hallucinogenic effects of 2C-B could bring an increased level of risk to people with psychiatric disorders.

2C-B has never been associated with any overdoses or deaths, but there’s been one case of reported psychosis after using 2C-B [ 7 ].

Microdosing is the process of taking very small, sub-perceptual doses of a substance. They’re used to increase focus and concentration, improve empathy and connectedness with others, and help achieve a higher level of productivity.

Some users have reported taking microdoses of 2C-B similarly to other psychedelics like magic mushrooms or LSD. It’s been reported to increase tactile awareness, increase the clarity of thought, and boost mental energy and stamina.

It’s not clear whether or not microdoses of 2C-B are safe long term.

Final Thoughts: What Is 2C-B?

2C-B is one of the most popular psychoactive substances globally — despite there being virtually no research available on its safety or effect profiles in the medical literature.

It’s often used as an alternative to MDMA at lower doses and an alternative to LSD in high doses.

Compared to other psychedelics, 2C-B is considered gentle — which effects described as being a combination of MDMA and LSD. A better comparison is mescaline — which is the molecule Alexander Shulgin used to derive the 2C class of drugs, to begin with.

We’re running a continual survey on the use of 2C-B to better understand the effects and use patterns surrounding this unique psychedelic substance.

If you’ve tried 2C-B and want to contribute to this research, you can anonymously enter details of your experience through this  6-minute 2C-B survey . We greatly appreciate your participation!

What is 2C-B?

2C-B (4-Bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine) is a psychedelic drug, which means it can affect all the senses, altering a person’s thinking, sense of time and emotions. Psychedelics can cause a person to hallucinate, seeing or hearing things that do not exist or are distorted. 1

2C-B is part of the ‘2C’ group of drugs, which is a general name for phenethylamines. 2

The '2C' group of drugs are psychedelic but can also cause stimulant effects. Drugs from this group include 2C-C, 2C-P, 2C-E and 2C-I. The effects vary among each drug in this group. 2

What does 2C-B look like?

According to anecdotal user reports, 2C-B usually comes as a white powder or crystal and is sometimes pressed into a tablet similar to MDMA. 3

Other names

Nexus, BDMPEA, Venus, Bees 3

Other types of psychedelics

  • Psilocybin (magic mushrooms)

How is 2C-B used?

2C-B is usually taken via the mouth (orally). 2C-B can be snorted, but anecdotal reports suggest this method of use can be very painful. 4

Effects of 2C-B

There is no safe level of drug use.  Use of any drug always carries some risk. It’s important to be careful when taking any type of drug.

Psychedelics affect everyone differently, based on:

  • size, weight and health
  • whether the person is used to taking it
  • whether other drugs are taken around the same time
  • the amount taken
  • the strength of the drug (varies from batch to batch)
  • environment (where the drug is taken).

2C-B affects everyone differently, but effects may include:

  • increased blood pressure and heart rate
  • nausea and vomiting
  • feelings of well-being
  • anxiety and panic
  • change in perception
  • hearing sounds
  • sexual arousal
  • hallucinations
  • insomnia. 2, 4

The effects of 2C-B typically last from four to eight hours. There have been anecdotal reports it can last for up to 12 hours. 3

Impact of mood and environment

Drugs that affect a person’s mental state (psychoactive drugs) can also have varied effects depending on a person’s mood (often called the ‘set’) or the environment they’re in (the ‘setting’).

Set is a person’s state of mind, previous encounters with psychedelic drugs, and expectations of what’s going to happen. For example, feelings of stress or anxiety before using 2C-B may result in an unpleasant experience (bad trip). 5

Setting is the environment in which someone consumes 2C-B – whether it’s known and familiar, who they’re with, if they’re indoors or outdoors, the type of music and light. For example, using 2C-B in a calm, quiet and relaxed environment could lead or contribute to a pleasant experience but being in a noisy, crowded place may result in a negative experience. 5

Being in a good state of mind, with trusted friends and a safe environment before taking 2C-B reduces the risk of having a ‘bad’ trip.

There have been no reported deaths from 2C-B, but deaths have occurred from the use of other 2C drugs. 2

Coming down

According to anecdotal user reports, the after-effects or comedown of taking 2C-B can last for around 2-4 hours. 3

Long-term effects

To our best knowledge, there have been no scientific studies into the long-term effects of 2C-B use.

2C-B and mental health

People with a family history of mental illness are more likely to experience anxiety or paranoia after using 2C-B. This is consistent with what the evidence tells us about people with mental illness and psychedelic use. 6

Bad trips

Some people may have negative experiences taking psychedelics, or experiences they find challenging. This can include experiencing:

  • frightening or confronting hallucinations
  • intense anxiety and confusion
  • fear and paranoia. 5, 7

Tolerance and dependence

Similar to other psychedelics, 2C-B does not produce dependence. Some people that use 2C-B report a tolerance to it after regular use (more than once every five to seven days). 3

Mixing 2C-B with other drugs

The effects of taking 2C-B with other drugs − including over-the-counter or prescribed medications − can be unpredictable and dangerous.

2C-B + cannabis = a more intense psychedelic experience which could result in anxiety and increase the chances of having a ‘bad trip’. 8

2C-B + tramadol = a lowering of the seizure threshold. May cause seizures in predisposed individuals. 9, 10

More on polydrug use

‘Polydrug use’ is a term for the use of more than one drug or type of drug at the same time or one after another.1 Polydrug use can involve both illicit drugs and legal substances, such as alcohol and medications.

Reducing harm

  • Start with a lower dose until you know how the drug affects you personally. It will be different for everyone due to factors such as weight, tolerance and metabolism.
  • Always weigh the 2C-B before use, using a milligram scale. A 15mg dose will produce a very different experience to a 30mg dose.
  • Consider the impact of mood and environment.
  • Consider having a person to 'trip sit'. A person who remains sober and that can help out if needed.
  • Avoid snorting as anecdotal user reports are this is extremely painful and can damage your nose and cause nose bleeds. 3, 11

There is limited information regarding regular use of 2C-B and withdrawal symptoms.

Chemical structure of 2CB molecule

What is 2C-B?

2C-B stands for 2,5-dimethoxy-4-bromophenethylamine , a synthetic drug with psychedelic effects. 2C-B is a phenylethylamine derivative and has a similar structure to mescaline , another psychedelic drug. It is described as a psychedelic drug with visual effects and some stimulant-like properties. Anecdotal reports draw similarities between LSD and MDMA .

2C-B was first synthesised by Alexander Shulgin in 1974 and his findings were reported in his 1991 book entitled PiHKAL. Following its discovery, there was some reported use of 2C-B by psychotherapists in the 1970s, which was followed by a breakthrough of use into the recreational drug scene in the 70s and 80s. 2C-B had a short-lived legitimate history and was marketed as an aphrodisiac in smart shops in America and the Netherlands, before being classified as illegal in several countries, including the UK, in the 90s.

Currently, 2C-B (and other 2C drugs such as 2C-D, 2C-E, 2C-I, 2C-P) are Class A, Schedule 1 drugs in the UK. This means they are illegal to possess, supply and produce. In recent years, 2C-B has increased in popularity in sales over the darknet , and is popular in the rave and festival scene.

What does 2C-B look like and how is it used?

2C-B is typically found as a powder (often white crystals), pill or in a capsule. These are typically taken orally and the standard oral dose is between 15-25 mg.

2C-B can also be insufflated (snorted), although this carries increased risk because the dosage required to achieve active effects is much lower than an oral dose. There are anecdotal reports of pain when snorting 2C-B.

We strongly advise against nasal insufflation of 2C-B

How does 2C-B work as a drug in the body and the brain?

There is still very limited research into the mechanisms of action of 2C-B in the human brain and body. However, it is suggested that 5-HT2 and α-adrenergic receptors are involved. The 5-HT2A receptor is associated with classical psychedelics, including LSD and psilocybin , whereby the drug binds and act as agonists. There is conflicting evidence concerning the mechanism of action of 2C-B, as some research suggests that 2C-B acts as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor, whilst other research suggests that 2C-B acts as an antagonist at the 5-HT2A receptor. It has also been suggested that the 5-HT2C receptor may be involved in the response activated and that the α1-adrenergic receptor is responsible for the stimulant effects.

What are the effects of 2C-B?

The onset time of 2C-B is typically between 45-75 minutes after oral consumption. A ‘come up’ period with a duration of 15-30 minutes is commonly described and can include feelings of anticipation and anxiety, as well as bodily sensations including tingling and pins and needles.

Although there are anecdotal reports of the effects of 2C-B, recent observational studies have provided valuable insight into the emotional and pharmacological effects of 2C-B. The effects of 2C-B are heavily dose-dependent and typically include:

  • Enhanced mood and feelings of euphoria
  • Visual and auditory alterations and hallucinations
  • Enhanced energy
  • Sexual arousal/enhanced libido
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea

Does 2C-B have any medical uses?

After the synthesis of 2C-B by Alexander Shulgin in 1974, there were reports that he recommended its use in therapy to a limited number of psychotherapists due to the empathogenic effects of 2C-B.

There is very limited clinical research into the medical uses of 2CB, however an observational study showed that 2C-B acts as an entactogenic drug. Entactogens have effects which include emotional openness, oneness and introspection. MDMA is also described as an entactogen and this property is attributed to its potential use as a tool in psychotherapy for several psychiatric conditions, including PTSD. Therefore, it has been suggested by some that 2C-B may pose the therapeutic benefit that Alexander Shulgin had claimed.

What are the risks of using 2C-B? Can they be avoided or reduced?

2C-B induces a psychedelic experience including alterations to mood, as well as visual and auditory hallucinations. The nature of a 2C-B trip can be emotionally challenging for some people, inducing states of anxiety and paranoia. Similar to all psychedelics, the psychological risks can be minimised by ‘set and setting’ , ensuring that both your mind-set is stable and well prepared, and that the environment is comfortable and safe.

Anecdotal reports suggest that recreational doses of 2C-B are associated with low toxicity and are physiologically well tolerated. However, there is a lack of scientific studies on the toxicity and long-term effects of 2C-B. A recent observational study investigated the immediate pharmacological effects of 2CB, demonstrating increased heart rate and blood pressure after 2CB consumption. Therefore, 2C-B may be dangerous for those with heart conditions.

The dosage of 2C-B is in the milligram region and the effects are highly dose dependent. There is a very steep dose response curve, which means that small changes to the dose that may be undetectable by eye could have drastic effects on the 2C-B experience. Alexander Shulgin states in PiHKAL that “over the 12 to 24 milligram range, every 2 milligrams can make a profound increase or change of response.” Therefore, it is critical that doses are measured accurately.

Snorting of 2C-B is highly inadvisable and there are anecdotal reports of pain associated with insufflation. Extra caution is required with snorting as the dose required is much smaller than an oral dose and the onset is very rapid, often within minutes.

2C-B can be tested using the Marquis Reagent (NIK ® test A) and will produce a yellow/green colour. However, extra caution is needed as 2C-I (another 2C drug with different effects) will also give a yellow/green colour using the Marquis Reagent (NIK ® test A). There are other drug testing kits available that can be used for further clarification of substances, but it is important to appreciate the limitations in determining the differences between the 2C series of drugs which includes 2C-B, 2C-D, 2C-E, 2C-I, and 2C-P.

Read more about 2C-B harm reduction here.

Are there health conditions that make 2C-B more dangerous?

Similar to other psychedelic drugs, a history of mental health illness (such as schizophrenia, psychosis or bipolar disorder) may increase the likelihood of an unpleasant experience (‘bad trip’) and there is the risk 2C-B may exacerbate these conditions. However, there is still a very limited understanding of the dangers associated with the use of psychedelics in those with pre-existing mental health conditions. There has been a report of psychosis after 2C-B , however it is important to state that the purity of the 2C-B was not confirmed in this case.

2C-B increases heart rate and blood pressure . These effects could be more dangerous for those with a history of heart conditions or high blood pressure. Some have suggested that 2C-B may present more risks for those with diabetes or epilepsy.

It is important to understand the metabolism of 2C-B by the body and the potential implications this may have. 2C-B is metabolised by enzymes called monoamine oxidases (MAOs) A and B, and therefore this could pose a risk for those on Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).

Prescription drugs with an associated risk:

  • MAOIs (some antidepressants)
  • Antipsychotics
  • Antihypertensives
  • Central nervous system depressants
  • Vasodilators

Can 2C-B be mixed with other drugs?

2C-B should not be consumed with alcohol or other drugs. An understanding of the effects and mechanisms of 2C-B can provide insight into the risks associated with mixing 2C-B with other drugs.

Key drug combinations to avoid are listed below:

• 2C-B should not be mixed with tramadol due to the increased risk of seizure

• 2C-B should not be mixed with ayahuasca or ‘changa’ as they both contain MAOIs

• 2C-B should not be mixed with other stimulants including cocaine and amphetamines

• 2C-B should not be mixed with cannabis

• 2C-B should not be mixed with other psychedelics as this carries the risk of making the trip more intense

• 2C-B should not be mixed with any recreationally used prescription drugs that are known to potentially interact with 2C-B. This includes all those listed here.

Is 2C-B addictive?

2C-B addiction is unlikely because 2C-B is considered to have a low potential for addiction, similar to other psychedelic drugs.

Harm reduction advice for 2C-B users

2C-B produces a psychedelic experience with some stimulant-like properties. Informed harm reduction advice can help to mitigate some of the associated risks.

Being educated and prepared

It is important that you fully educate yourself on the health risks and drug interactions associated with 2C-B, and ensure that an accurate and suitable dose is consumed. 2C-B has some stimulant properties and therefore it is important to remain hydrated, especially if dancing.

Set and setting

‘Set’ refers to a person’s mind-set including their mood, thoughts and expectations. This can have a significant effect on the experience of the trip and therefore it is advised that 2C-B is only consumed when a person is in a positive and stable state of mind. ‘Setting’ refers to the environment and social situation in which the drug is consumed. Although some consider 2C-B a milder psychedelic, it is advisable that it is consumed in a safe and familiar environment.

The presence of a sober sitter is recommended for those with limited experience of psychedelic drugs. The sitter can provide reassurance and support during and after the trip.

2C-B Myths and misunderstandings

Other 2C drugs

2C-B is part of the 2C family of psychedelic phenethylamines, many of which were originally synthesised by Alexander Shulgin. Other popular 2C drugs include 2C-D, 2C-E, 2C-I and 2C-P. However, the effects of each 2C drug will vary and education of the differences is recommended before consumption of other 2C drugs.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

This composite image of thirteen photographs shows the progression of a total solar eclipse

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Leaves Road Trip Early, Jalen Williams OUT vs Pacers

The OKC Thunder will be without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the remainder of the road trip as Jalen Williams is listed as out against the Pacers.

  • Author: Rylan Stiles

In this story:

The Oklahoma City Thunder (52-24) continue their five-game road trip against the Indiana Pacers on Friday without their top two scorers. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Iquad) and Jalen Williams (ankle) are both listed as out for this contest.

With the Thunder on the verge of their first three-game losing skid of the season, head coach Mark Daigneault updated the media on the status of their star player ahead of Friday's game. The Thunder bench boss announced that Gilgeous-Alexander has been sent back home to Oklahoma City.

"We need to make sure he doesn't decondition during this time and gym access on the road is much more difficult to come by," Daigneault explained.

This will rule Gilgeous-Alexander out for Sunday's road finale against the Charlotte Hornets before the team joins the MVP candidate back in Oklahoma City for a four-game home stand to end the regular season.

Williams was listed as doubtful throughout the day, and despite going through shoot-around , the team's second-best scorer will not be able to give it a go tonight in Indiana.

Unlike Gilgeous-Alexander's status, Williams's playing status is still murky regarding Sunday's trip to the Queen City.

The Pacers are fighting for the right to stay in the top-six out east with the Miami Heat just a half-game back set to push them back to the Play-in Tournament. The Thunder sit a game back of first place in the Western Conference.

I think the best way to use 2C-P is with a tiny amount and snorted; maybe 2-4 mg's. This reduces the burn, and makes it so the come up isn't too nauseating and the body load is also reduced. Given the potency you still get a pretty long trip from those doses too. 3. Reply.
