Acropolis Athens

The Acropolis is the central hill in Athens Greece. All info, online entrance tickets and tours for visiting the rock with the Parthenon temple and the Acropolis Greece.

Acropolis Greece, the hill of Athens

The Acropolis is a hill of no less than 156 meters in the middle of the city of Athens. Acropolis therefore appropriately means 'the highest point'. This rock is so high that you can see it from afar. The rock has a flat top and many steep slopes. The Acropolis Greece is one of the most famous and popular tourist attractions of Athens . On this mountain are a number of well-known landmarks that you can visit. The ancient site around the Parthenon was an important area for the patron goddess Athena. The Ancient Athena Temple was therefore dedicated to her. During the war with the Persians, a large part of the Acropolis had been destroyed. Rebuilding soon began after the war. Important statesman Pericles came up with the plans, which were executed by the sculptor Phidias. Every monument on the hill is an ode to a god or goddess.

What to see on the sacred Acropolis site?

On the Athens Acropolis grounds there are several buildings and monuments that you can visit:

1. Parthenon

The Parthenon is the largest building on the Acropolis Greece. Many people also see the Parthenon as the most impressive building. This building is dedicated to the goddess Pallas Athena. The purpose of this temple was to show how devoted and skilled the Greeks were when it came to art and architecture. The architect Phidias has kept the ratio 4:9 throughout this building. This was the first building built after the war. It was thus a symbol of democracy and hegemony in Athens. Many decorations and paintings could be found in the Parthenon. Today, these can no longer be found in the building itself. You can now see them in the Acropolis Museum and the British Museum of Londen.

2. Propylaea

Propylaea is a term from classical antiquity that stands for a monumental entrance to a building complex or sacred area. The Propylaea are therefore the entrance gate to the Acropolis. This entrance is therefore dedicated to gods who protected entrance gates. The Propylaea consist of columns divided over two galleries. Visitors could enter through these galleries. The Propylaea are located on the west side.

3. Temple of Nike

The Temple of Nike was built in the honor of goddess Nike. Goddess Nike is the goddess of victory. This building was therefore built after the Greeks had defeated the Persians in the war and the building that used to be on this site was destroyed. This temple is built in the Ionic style with a total of eight columns. At the front wall you can also find a number of pilasters that have been placed there as decoration. The most special parts of this temple are probably the friezes. This is where the war between the Greeks and the Persians is depicted. On the other side, the gods Athena and Zeus can be seen. At this time it was very unusual to display such images on friezes.

4. Erechtheum

The Erechtheum is named after the king Erechtheus. This building is one of the most important sanctuaries of the Acropolis Greece , although it is not the largest building. The original temple can be found in the main building. This building consists of two different areas. One room was dedicated to a statue of Athena Polias and the other room was dedicated to King Erechtheus and the god Poseidon.

A library and third room can be found in the northern hall. Also located here is the Pandroseion, a walled sanctuary. Here you will find an olive tree donated by Athena, an altar to god Zeus and the tomb of Cecrops. The southern hall consists of six columns that are shaped like the figures of women.

Other sights of the Acropolis

A total of more than 20 buildings and monuments can be found on and around the Acropolis site. You will also find a statue of Athena Promachos (4) and the old Athena Temple (2). Athena was the protector of the city and is one of the main goddesses worshiped in the Acropolis. You will also find the Eleusinion (7) on the Acropolis. This temple is dedicated to the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone.

What else to see near the acropolis site.

On the way to the entrance of the Acropolis Greece or when you look down from the Ancient grounds, you will see some remarkable remains of important buildings that border the Acropolis grounds:

Odeion of Herodes Atticus

The Odeion of Herodes Atticus is a theater building commissioned by Herodes Atticus. This was a powerful and wealthy man in Greece who had it built for his late wife. The building has the shape of a semicircle that can accommodate approximately five thousand people. When it was built, this theater had a roof, so it was a completely covered theatre. Today there is no roof and many of the walls have disappeared. The theater was originally used for musical performances. Since the 1970s, public performances have been taking place again. Today you can attend concerts, operas, dance performances and Greek tragedies here.

Dionysus Theater

The Dionysus Theater is located on the southern side of the Akropolis and can be easily seen when looking down from the Acropolis grounds. This is the oldest theater in all of Europe. This is also where the art form of Greek tragedy originated. The ancient Greeks instituted the holiday Dionysia. During this holiday, the god Dionysus was worshipped. This was done through theatrical performances. These were first held downtown, but due to the growing audience, the theater performances were moved to the Acropolis. The audience first took place at the beginning of the rock on the ground or on benches. After that, stone seats were built which formed the basis for the theater.

Theater of Dionysos

Temple of Dionysus

At the foot of the Acropolis of Athens you will also find the Temple of Dionysus. This temple actually consists of an old and new temple. The ancient temple was built for a wooden statue of Dionysus. At this ancient temple, theatrical performances first took place during the holiday Dionysia. When these performances were moved to the Dionysus Theater, a new temple to Dionysus was built.

The Areopagus is located northwest of the Acropolis Greece. This is a rock 115 meters high. Pagus is therefore the Greek word for large rock. The main judicial institution of Athens was located on this rock. Today it is still called ‘ Areios Pagos ’, but has been moved to a different location. The purpose of this judicial institution was to ensure that all laws were observed. Legend has it that the god Ares was convicted here for the murder of Poseidon's son. Orestes, another figure from Greek mythology, is also said to have been tried here for killing his mother.

See the Acropolis and other sites in Athens with the combined ticket

The Acropolis and Ancient Athens combined ticket

Ask anyone what is the number one thing to see in Athens, and they will definitely say “ The Acropolis “. Without a doubt, the stunning 2,500 year-old archaeological site is a must-see when you are visiting Athens.

However, the Acropolis is not the only ancient site you can visit in our vibrant city! There are six more important ancient sites in Athens , including the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Zeus. Each of them offers a different perspective of life in Ancient Athens.

Discover ancient Athens with the combined ticket

As an Athenian, I like to visit the ancient sites every now and then. Rather than getting separate tickets for each site, I buy the Acropolis combo ticket, which is a lot more affordable. Anyone visiting Athens who wants to see all the main sites in the city, should do the same!

Click here to get your ticket: Combo ticket for ancient Athens .

There is also the official website where you can get your tickets online. However, this doesn’t offer you the option to purchase any guided tours or audio guides. You can try it here .

Guided tours in Athens

You can easily visit the ancient sites yourself. However, taking a tour with a licensed guide will definitely enhance your experience and your visit to Athens .

I’ve taken a number of guided tours over the past 15 years or so, and I’ve learnt new things in each of them.

Exploring the Acropolis in Athens - the Karyatides statues

There are dozens of tours to choose from, which you can compare and book on Get Your Guide or Viator.

This guided tour of the Acropolis gets some of the highest ratings, and is excellent value for money.

Or you could go for this combined tour of the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum instead. This one will give you a better insight on life in Ancient Athens.

And now, let’s look at the seven ancient sites in Athens which you can explore with your combo ticket!

Note: While it had been announced that the combined ticket would be discontinued in April 2024, it’s still available until the end of October 2024! If you are visiting later than that, tickets will be released closer to the time, so no need to worry.

1. The Acropolis of Athens

It would be a difficult task to write anything new about this superb ancient Greek monumental complex, which was declared a UNESCO monument in 1987. The Acropolis of Athens is located on a hill of about 150 m in central Athens, and it consists of fortification walls and temples.

The first wall was built during the 13th century BC, in the Mycenaean era. The complex reached its peak in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, especially at the time when Pericles was ruling Athens.

See the Acropolis and other sites in Athens with the combined ticket

Nowadays, you can see the remains of a number of monuments. The most famous temple is the Parthenon , which was dedicated to Athena, the city’s patron goddess.

Other important temples are the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike , while the Propylaia Gate is monumental. You can also see the amazing Theater of Dionysus , and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus , also known as Herodion.

These ancient monuments have survived earthquakes, wars, bombings, alterations and even poor restoration works. They are still standing today, reminding everyone of Greece’s unique past!

You can buy your Acropolis pass here: Acropolis combination ticket .

Time required: 1.5 hours minimum Single Entry Fee: 20 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 10 Euro (1/11 – 31/3) Closest Metro Stations:  Acropolis and Thisseio I recommend: Wear non-slippery shoes, and bring some water and a hat! Also, check out these tips for staying cool in the summer in Athens .

Acropolis Hours:  8:00-20:00 during summer, 8:00-17:00 during winter. In September and October, closing time varies, so check in advance of your visit.

You can read more about the Acropolis here: The Acropolis .

2. The Ancient Agora of Athens and the Museum of the Ancient Agora

In ancient Athens, the Agora was the heart of the city-state. In fact, the Greek word “ agora ” means “gathering place” or “assembly”.

The Agora was the centre of political, artistic, athletic, spiritual and everyday life of Athens. Along with the Acropolis, this is where Democracy, Philosophy, Theatre and Freedom of Expression and Speech were born.

The temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora of Athens

The highlights of the Agora include the Stoa of Attalos, and the temple of Hephaestus. The Stoa of Attalos, which has been rebuilt and transformed into the Museum of the Ancient Agora, was quite possibly the first Mall in history.

The temple of Hephaestus is the best preserved temple in the whole of Greece!

Apart from those, you might be surprised to see a well-preserved Byzantine church, the Church of the Holy Apostles, built in the 10th century AD.

You can buy skip-the-line tickets for the Ancient Agora here: Athens ticket combo .

Time required:  2 hours minimum Single Entry Fee: 10 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 5 Euro (1/11 – 31/3) Closest Metro Stations:  Monastiraki and Thisseio I recommend: Taking water with you (water might be available at vending machines inside, but it’s best to have some just in case).

Here is my article about the Ancient Agora in Athens . Also, here is a guide with a few useful words in Greek .

3. Kerameikos and the Archaeological Museum of Kerameikos

The archaeological site of the Kerameikos is often overlooked by visitors, but I strongly suggest you visit. It’s one of the most important areas of ancient Athens.

The area was developed around the banks of river Eridanos, whose banks are still visible today. Named after the Greek word for pottery, the area originally served as a settlement for potters and vase painters, and was the main production centre of the famous Athenian vases.

The site was later converted into a burial ground, which eventually became ancient Athens’ most important cemetery.

Kerameikos can be visited on the combined ticket to the archaeological sites in Athens

The site of Kerameikos contains a part of the Themistoclean Wall, which was built in 478 BC to protect the ancient city of Athens from the Spartans.

The Wall divided the Kerameikos into two sections, inner and outer Kerameikos. Inner Kerameikos (inside the city walls) developed into a residential neighbourhood, whereas outer Kerameikos remained a cemetery.

Parts of the Wall, together with the gate of Dipylon and the Sacred Gate are preserved today. These were the starting points of the Panathenaic procession and the procession of the Eleusinian Mysteries respectively.

Excavations in the Kerameikos area began in 1870. During the construction of Kerameikos metro station, approximately 1,000 tombs from the 4th and 5th centuries BC were discovered. Burial-related exhibits are showcased in the museum of Kerameikos.

Time required: 1.5 hours minimum Single Entry Fee: 8 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 4 Euro (1/11 – 31/3) Closest Metro Stations: Kerameikos and Thisseio I recommend: Checking out the walls.

4. The Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympieio)

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is one of the oldest temples in Athens, and one of the largest ever built in Greece. Its construction was initiated by the tyrant Peisistratus the Young in 515 BC, but was stopped due to the fall of tyranny.

It resumed in 174 BC by Antiochus IV Epiphanes, and was eventually completed by Emperor Hadrian in AD 124/125. Over the years, a new city wall, a large Late Roman cemetery, and an extensive Byzantine settlement were developed in the area.

The temple of Zeus in Athens

Excavations on the site began in 1883. Of the original 104 columns, only 15 remain standing today. A 16th column collapsed during an earthquake in 1852, and the pieces can still be seen on the ground.

The site is very impressive, not least for the sheer size of the columns! If you walk around, you can see Acropolis in the background.

Note: At the time of writing (spring 2024), the temple is under restoration, and is covered with scaffolding. The photo above is a few years ago!

Time required: 1 hour minimum Single Entry Fee: 8 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 4 Euro (1/11 – 31/3); Free with the Acropolis combination ticket. Closest Metro Station:  Acropolis I recommend:  Finding the perfect angle to take a photo of the temple, with the Acropolis in the background!

5. The Roman Agora of Athens and the Tower of the Winds

The Roman Agora of Athens was built between 19 – 11 BC, with donations by Julius Caesar and Augustus. After the Herulae invaded Athens in AD 267, it became the centre of the city of Athens.

During the Byzantine period and the Ottoman occupation, the site of the Roman Agora was covered by newly built houses, churches, the Fethiye mosque and workshops. Excavations of the site began in the 1830s.

The Tower of the Winds in Athens

Within the Roman Agora, you can also see the Tower of the Winds, built in the 1 st century BC by the astronomer Andronicos, from Kyrrhos in Macedonia.

The tower is built of white Pentelic marble and is octagonal. It was originally used to identify the direction the wind blew; there were also sundials on the external walls and a water clock in the interior.

Over the years, it was converted into a Christian church and into the tekke of the Dervishes. Excavations started in 1837 and the latest restoration work finished in 2016.

Whilst the single entrance fee probably doesn’t offer great value, you should definitely see it with the Athens combined ticket.

Time required:  Half hour minimum Single Entry Fee: 8 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 4 Euro (1/11 – 31/3) Closest Metro Station:  Monastiraki I recommend: Looking at the stone carvings on the exterior of the Tower of the Winds.

6. Hadrian’s Library

The Roman emperor Hadrian built this library in A.D. 132, and at the time it contained several rolls of papyrus books. Like other ancient Greek monuments, it was destroyed by the Herulae in A.D. 267.

In subsequent years, different types of Christian churches were built on top of the site. During the Ottoman occupation, the site became the seat of the Governor (Voevode).

Hadrian's library in Athens

Time required:  Half hour Single Entry Fee: 6 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 3 Euro (1/11 – 31/3); Free with the Acropolis combination ticket. Closest Metro Station: Monastiraki I recommend: This is a quick site to look around when using Monastiraki station (it’s directly opposite).

7. Aristotle’s Lyceum (Archaeological site of Lykeion)

An archaeological site opened to the public in 2014, Aristotle’s Lyceum is a small park with a few ancient ruins. It’s definitely worth visiting if you have a special interest in ancient Greek philosophy.

Aristotle's Lyceum in Athens

Aristotle’s Lyceum was one of the oldest gymnasia in ancient Athens. Aristotle founded his Walking School ( Peripatetic School), based on the principles founded by Plato’s Academy, and taught from 335 – 323 BC.

This outdoors school taught rhetoric, philosophy and other disciplines. All Athenian men and youths were taught in the Lyceum, as part of their state military service.

These days, you can see the remains of several buildings, such as the gymnasia , a palestra, baths and a library.

You can easily combine this with a visit to the nearby historical museums. The Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Benaki Museum, and the Museum of Cycladic Art all offer a unique perspective on Greece’s long history.

Time required:  Half hour Single Entry Fee: 4 Euro (1/4 – 31/10) or 2 Euro (1/11 – 31/3) Closest Metro Stations:  Evangelismos and Syntagma I recommend:  Reading about Aristotle and Ancient Greek philosophy before your visit!

Does this combined ticket to archaeological sites of Athens enable you to jump the queue? I have seen the ‘no line’ tickets advertised elsewhere?

I’m interested in getting the combined ticket to archaeological sites. Your site says your can’t buy these online, so where do I get them?

Hi Karen! In fact, as is stated in the article, it is indeed possible to get the combined ticket online. “Note that it is possible to get full-price tickets online, a few months in advance of your visit.” This is the website you need to use https://etickets.tap.gr/ . You will need to choose “Attica”, select any of the sites, and then proceed to a next screen where it gives you the option for the 30 euro combined ticket. However, if you are entitled to a discount, the system doesn’t support this yet. Hope this helps! Cheers from a sunny Athens, Vanessa

Is there any way to change to English? I can book otherwise

Just check the top right hand corner, there’s a small “EN” sign.

With the combined ticket, are you able to visit the same site multiple times? For example, can we go to the Acropolis during the day on Monday and then go back to the Acropolis at night on Tuesday?

Hello, no you can’t! Thanks for asking, I will include this in the article. Please also note that the Acropolis Museum is not included! Enjoy your time!

Hello, If I buy the combined ticket, is it valid only for 1 day, or I can use it on other days?

Hi! The ticket is valid for 5 days. Enjoy your visit!

I clicked on attica but the page doesn’t show the continue button. I see ‘continuity’ and the drop down options beside it on the left shows places in greek language. the page virtually is frozen

Right, well who knows why! You can either try again on another day, or get them through this link

Hello! We’re going to Athens March 30 to April 2 only and are looking to book a Athens Combo Ticket for 6 sites. It says on the site that the ticket is only valid until March 31st and there is no possibility yet to book tickets from April 1st. Question: If we book and pay tickets with first use on March 31st, will the ticket still be valid for visits on April 1st and April 2nd? (Since I see it’s 5 days in total from first entrance registered) Thank You for Your kind reply. Lars

Yes your combo ticket will be valid for 5 days! I think they will only release April tickets on March 31st, which is why you can’t book it now. Enjoy your stay!

Thank you for this informative post. I’ve looked for this information everywhere, but couldn’t find it – maybe you could help me? I know EU citizen kids have free entry and you have to get them a ticket at the front ticket office. Do I have to do that every time we go to one of the sites, or do they get a free combo ticket once we go to the first site and buy my adult ticket?

Thanks for your question! You can ask for a free combo ticket for the children at the first site you go, so you won’t have to queue at the others (i.e. the Acropolis). Enjoy your time!

Thank you for the great information. I read on one of your posts that European Heritage is celebrated the last weekend in September this year. As I will be in Athens that weekend, do I need to purchase the Athens Combo ticket? Thank you, Kathy

Hi Kathy! The ancient sites will be free on that weekend so you won’t need to buy the ticket. You will still need to buy one for the Acropolis Museum though. Enjoy your time!

Thanks for the information. A few questions about the combo ticket: For the original purchase you have to choose a day and time. Am I obligated to go to that sight at that specific time? Do I have to go to that sight before going to any of the other sights? And finally, can I go to more than one sight on the same day? Thank you.

Hi! You can go to each site at any time you want, and you can go to more than one sites on the same day! Enjoy!

Hi! Thank you for this useful guide! I’ll be in Athens from 17th of September and planning to visit the Acropolis on the 19th. But I want to visit the other sites on the 17th and 18th. I am wondering which date and time I need to select for my ticket. The official website, even when booking for the combo ticket, asks to chose a date and time to visit the Acropolis. My question is: what date and time should I select for my ticket if I want to visit the Acropolis on 19th at 8am but all the other sites from the 17th? if I select the 19th at 8am, does it mean that the ticket will be valid from the 19th? and what if I select the 17th, will I be able to visit the acropolis on the 19th instead? It’s a bit confusing, hopefully you can help me:) Thanks! Chiara

Hi Chiara, as this system is very new, I am afraid I am not sure myself. Since you are planning to visit one of the other sites first, you can actually get your combo ticket in person at the entrance, it’s only the Acropolis that has queues. By the way, it’s actually best to visit the Acropolis later on in the day rather than 8 am, as this is when cruise passengers visit and it tends to be a lot busier. Enjoy your time!

A hop-on hop-off bus ticket lets you explore Athens , the Port of Piraeus, and the Athenian Riviera at your leisure. The Panathenaic Stadium and the Parthenon on the Acropolis are only a short ride away. You may ride on four lines in one day, including the Orange Line, the Blue Line, the Yellow Line, and Vouliagmeni (the Blue Line’s terminus) (Green Line).

Learn about the most stunning sights in Athens and make the most of your cruise or holiday. Listeners will be able to learn about one of the world’s oldest cities thanks to recorded comments in 16 languages.

Piraeus on the Blue Line Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

Just a short distance from your cruise ship, you may catch the Blue Line at one of Piraeus’ two cruise ports and be on your way in no time. Visit Pasalimani’s yacht marina and Mikrolimano’s old port, both of which have yachts docked there.

If you have time, don’t miss the newly opened Museum of Acropolis and the Parthenon at the summit. Passengers may get off the bus at any of Athens’ or Greece’s most famous landmarks.

Athens to the Orange Line Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

The most stunning sights in the city center beyond the Acropolis and Parthenon may be seen from the Orange Line. Discover Athens’ most traditional neighborhood, Plaka, by taking a stroll through its ancient streets. Visit Hadrian’s Gate, the entrance to the palace of the Roman emperor.

See the greatest Roman temple in Greece, the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Take a look at the amazing guards of the Hellenic Parliament on Syntagma Square. Athens’ main shopping street, Ermou, may be found here.

Come see where the first modern Olympic Games were staged at the Panathenaic Stadium! Look about in the National Library, a stunning structure of enormous historical significance. You may visit the National Archaeological Museum or the Flea Market in Monastiraki, both of which are a short walk from the National Archaeological Museum.

Take a stroll around Thission, a little town with a lot of character.

Glyfada – the Yellow Line Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

As you board the Blue Line at the Planetarium station and go to the Athenian Riviera, take in the sights. Observe how the arid desert of the 1900s transformed into one of Greece’s most cosmopolitan places.

A mix of old and new can be seen along the Yellow Line, which connects places like the Niarchos Foundation with the Marina Alimou. Swim and sunbathe at Agios Kosmas or see the sunset from Marina Flisvou.

It’s possible to explore the capital’s most sophisticated areas and shop at premium department shops from Glyfada Terminal. Relax at a lovely café, and don’t forget to stop by the beach bar for a drink by the water.

To Vouliagmeni, use the green line Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

Even while Vouliagmeni is more well known for its beaches, the town is also a fascinating historical lesson. Vouliagmeni is a must-see for history buffs, thanks to its Byzantine Museum and Allied Forces Cemetery.

Kavouri Oceanis, one of Athens’ most famous beaches, is a great place to unwind. One of Athens’ most popular attractions is Vouliagmeni Lake. Don’t forget to visit the hot baths while you’re here to take in the stunning scenery.

The Piraeus Happy Train

One of the most beautiful suburbs of Athens is explored by the Happy Train of Piraeus. To get there from the cruise ports, it’s a half-hour walk via Pasalimani and the Municipal Theatre.

The commercial heart of Piraeus can be found only a short walk away from the Private Yacht Marina in Korai Square.

The Acropolis Museum was first planned in 1976 as a reaction to the need to preserve significant Greek treasures, such as sculptures from the Parthenon, which were in danger of being lost.

The New Acropolis Museum, which opened in 2007, provides visitors with a unique chance to see ancient objects and get a deeper understanding of the Acropolis . There is an old Athenian neighborhood underneath the museum where people lived and worked from the fourth millennium B.C. until the 12th century A.D.

With your entry ticket, you’ll have access to all four galleries of the permanent exhibition:

For example, you’ll discover artifacts from the sanctuaries on the Acropolis ‘ slopes, as well as daily items from various eras of history.

  • The Archaic Gallery showcases exhibits from the 7th century B.C. through the conclusion of the Persian Wars in 480/79 B.C. via transparent parts of the floor.
  • Parthenon Gallery’s rectangular cement core is adorned with the frieze of the Parthenon as you move around the periphery.
  • Propylaea, Athena Nike, and Erechteion, the Museum’s last three galleries, include sculptures that have served as models for succeeding eras. Athens Nike’s temple has a beautiful coffered ceiling, as well as sculptures on its parapet.
  • On the Erechtheion’s balcony overlooking the Gallery of Slopes of the Acropolis , there are the Caryatids of the Erechtheion. Reliefs of Athenian laws, imposing portraits of ancient Greeks, Roman replicas of classical masterpieces, and portrayals of historical personalities from the 5th century B.C. to the 5th century AD are also on display.

Acropolis Entrance Ticket with Phone Audio Tour – Athens Combo Ticket

With a pre-booked access ticket, you may skip the ticket queue and enter Acropolis Hill without having to wait in line. You may listen to a fantastic self-guided digital audio tour of the Acropolis at your leisure by downloading it to your smartphone.

In Athens, visitors are expected to adhere to a set of rules. Souvlaki and a Greek salad are the first things you get to eat. The Acropolis should be reached as soon as possible after that.

Athens’ most famous landmark may be entered without waiting in line! Go immediately to the ticket-validation machines at the entrance after receiving your e-ticket.

If you’re looking for a fun and educational look at the Acropolis and its classical structures through the eyes of ancient Athenians, you may download the self-guided audio tour “Acropolis Classic”

You may customise this experience to your own interests and schedule by selecting from a variety of trademark tales at each location.

The digital audio tour with Athens Combo Ticket

The digital audio tour starts at the great stairway, which has been the customary method of accessing the Acropolis since the time of Pericles, once you download it on your smartphone. The temple of Athena Nike enables you to learn about the Acropolis ‘s defensive function and the conflict between innovators and conservatives in ancient Athens by seeing the Acropolis ‘s defensive walls.

For a structure that was appreciated in antiquity, you enter the Propylaea (perhaps even more than the Parthenon). Try to envision what it was like to go through the enormous doors and gaze at a statue of Socrates, the renowned philosopher.

It’s not only the Parthenon that catches your eye as you go through the huge court, but also a bronze replica of the Trojan Horse, a deity and a hero of ancient Greece. The Erechtheum is a strange temple, home to a serpent that liked honey cakes, as well as a variety of deities and holy ancestors.

The ancient temple of Athena has been reduced to a line of stones on the ground by the Persian invaders’ fire and wrath. At spite of the devastation, there are still vestiges of the Mycenaean kings’ palace in Athens.

A breathtaking perspective of Athens from the Belvedere vantage point will reveal how the Athenians transported all of this marble from a nearby mountain in order to build the Acropolis . We’ve finally arrived at the Parthenon, where the gold and ivory figure of Athena Parthenos stands proudly on its plinth.

Architectural and aesthetic excellence are exemplified in the temple. It’s also where legends like the Persian king’s throne, Athena’s birth, and the virgins who knitted the goddess’ peplos were born. Did we not say that the Parthenon is a pyramid in disguise?

The 16 best things to do in Athens

W ith so much history crammed into one crowded, chaotic city, it’s hard to know where to start sightseeing in Athens. If you’re into antiquities, you could spend a week wandering among the ruins clustered around the Acropolis.

But Athens is no historical theme park, and there are plenty of other things to do. Contemporary culture is everywhere, from the politically charged street art that’s become the modern city’s trademark to specialist museums, street markets, and open-air festivals that reflect the city’s increasingly multicultural population. Athens wears its long history lightly — you’ll even find locals sunbathing beside an ancient temple on one of the city’s many golden beaches.

For further  Athens inspiration, see our guides to the city's best  hotels ,  restaurants  and  nightlife .

Explore ancient Athens above and below ground

When it opened a decade ago, the Acropolis Museum was controversial. Not only because it reinvigorated the campaign to return the Elgin Marbles, but also for its unabashedly modern architecture. Now this fantastically interactive museum is as much a part of the city’s cultural landscape as the Acropolis itself. Start at the top floor Parthenon Gallery, where the temple frieze is brilliantly displayed, and work your way down.

Insider tip: Explore the streets, courtyards and mansions where Athenians lived thousands of years ago at the ancient settlement excavated below the museum.

Hit the heights of Greek civilisation

Obviously, you can’t visit Athens without visiting the Acropolis. No matter how many times you’ve paid homage to this wonder of the ancient world, the sheer majesty of the setting, artistry of the architecture, and palpable sense of humanity’s quest for eternity will give you goosebumps. Just make sure you don’t go at midday —all that dazzling white marble reflects the sun.

Insider tip:  Use the side entrance on Dionysiou Areopagitou street, rather than the main entrance below the Propylaea. The queue for tickets is shorter, and the gentle climb up to the temple takes you past the ancient amphitheatres of Dionysus and Herod Atticus.

Run around an Olympic Stadium

Built on the site of an ancient arena, the horseshoe-shaped Panathenaic Stadium was paved entirely in marble by the wealthy Athenian benefactor, Herodes Atticus, in 140 AD. It has hosted everything from naked athletics to gladiators, the first modern Olympics, and even occasional rock concerts. For an unforgettable work-out, the running track inside the stadium is open to joggers from 7.30am to 9am.

Insider tip: On the second Sunday in November, the stadium is the thrilling finishing line of the Athens Marathon. It’s free to enter to cheer on the runners on that day.

Take a crash course in Greek culture

Time travel through several centuries in a single day on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, the Museum Mile of Athens. From Orthodox iconography at the Byzantine and Christian Museum to prehistoric sculpture juxtaposed with contemporary art at the Museum of Cycladic Art and 20th-century Greek painting and folk art at the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture, it’s the perfect Athens first-timers’ primer.

Insider tip: Strolling through the sculpture gardens of the Byzantine and Christian Museum, it’s easy to imagine how the peripatetic philosophy students, who wandered the hallowed grounds of Aristotle’s Lyceum next door, were inspired by their surroundings.

Learn the who's who of Greece's good and great

Unlike Père Lachaise or Highgate, the First Cemetery of Athens is completely off the tourist radar. This serene, open-air sculpture garden is a who’s who of Greece’s good and great, their graves marked with extravagant mausolea or melancholy marble angels. The flower-lined paths are shaded with cypress and bitter orange trees, whose blossoms perfume the cemetery in spring.

Insider tip: There’s no map of the cemetery and the tombstones follow an arcane numbering system. If you’re looking for a particular grave, check this helpful blog , which also has entertaining potted biographies of the most prominent people buried here.

Strike gold at the National Archaeological Museum

Many Greeks will tell you that the collection at the National Archaeological Museum is superior to that of the Acropolis Museum. The curation may be old-fashioned, but the richness of the exhibits is truly outstanding. You could spend days ogling the toned statues, delicate jewellery, and intriguing household items from antiquity in this neoclassical landmark. The enchanting sculpture garden is a secret oasis from the urban hustle.

Insider tip: If you’re staying in Athens for more than a day or two, buy a three-day ticket that’s also valid for the underrated Epigraphic Museum, Numismatic Museum and Byzantine and Christian Museum.

Discover the culinary secrets of Plaka

It’s hard to eat well in Plaka, the touristy old town of Athens. Ignore the taverna touts hawking frozen moussaka and sign up for a food tour with Culinary Backstreets. Along the way, they’ll point out the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman traces evident in the local architecture and culture.

Shop like a local at your neighbourhood market

Every Athenian neighbourhood has its weekly laiki agora (people’s market), a local ritual that’s as much street theatre as a celebration of seasonal food. One of the liveliest markets is on Kallidromiou Street in Exarchia. On Saturday morning, locals of all ages and stripes pick through heaps of fragrant fruits and vegetables and bat away the cheeky banter of the stallholders.

Insider tip: Pick up cheese and crackers from Ellinika Kaloudia (00 30 210 330 0384; Facebook page ) and climb up Mount Lycabettus for a picnic. Or join the local writers and actors catching up over ouzo-mezze at Mouria (87 Charilaou Trikoupi & Kallidromiou; 00 30 210 381 2607), a retro kafenio (coffee shop).

Watch a movie in the moonlight

From May to October, Athenian life moves outdoors — including the cinemas. There are over 60 open-air movie theatres all over Athens: hidden on rooftops, squeezed between apartment buildings, in parks, even by the seaside. Some, like Cine Paris and Thision, even have the Acropolis as a backdrop.

Insider tip: Venture beyond the city centre to Oasis (00 30 724 4015) in Pangrati or Zefyros (00 30 210 346 2677) in Petralona, two cult summer cinemas that screen vintage classics.

Watch the sunset by the sea

The clunkily named Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre is a masterclass in green design and public space. Surrounding the shiny national opera house and library, there’s kayaking on the canal, bikes for hire, petanque and playgrounds, free concerts and festivals. Go at dusk to watch the sunset over the Athens Riviera from the Lighthouse, a glass-walled lookout perched on the green roof.

Insider tip: If you want to explore more of coastal Athens, which has everything from Blue Flag bays to beach clubs, marinas, mineral lakes and ancient temples, sign up for an Athens Riviera tour with Alternative Athens.

Browse a blockbuster collection of modern art

The late shipping tycoon Basil and his wife Elise Goulandris were friends and benefactors of some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Highlights of their formidable collection (estimated value: $3 billion) were periodically shown on their namesake museum on the island of Andros, until the works found a permanent home in Athens in 2019. The purpose-built B&E Goulandris Foundation Museum includes masterpieces by Picasso, Kandinsky, Miró, Pollock, Bacon, and pretty much every other 20th century artist you can name.  The couple were also fans of the Impressionists and acquired many works by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, and Degas. Another floor is devoted to Greek artists including Ghika, Tsarouchis, Moralis, and Tetsis — an excellent primer for those less familiar with Greece’s modern art scene.

Mingle with the Athenian art crowd

The former brewery in which the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) is housed stood empty for decades. It took almost as long for Greece’s first proper contemporary art institution to get off the ground, but it has finally come into its own.  The focus is on 21st century art from Greece, Southern Europe, and the Eastern Mediterranean, with socio-politically engaged group shows, solo exhibitions, and a lively programme of talks, screenings, and events.  The recent donation of 140 large-scale installations from the D. Daskalopoulos Collection will add real clout to the museum’s evolving permanent collection.

Drive to a nearby beach

In summer, escape the city heat to swim and sunbathe. Head for the Athens Coast, running from the port of Piraeus to Cape Sounio – 64km of spectacular views over the blue Saronic Gulf, with 13 sandy beaches carrying a 'Blue Flag' for high environmental standards. One of the nicest is Vouliagmeni, in a sheltered bay equipped with sun beds, parasols and snack bars.

Insider tip: In summer, Athens' beaches get extremely crowded with locals, especially at weekends, causing traffic jams and tail-backs along the coastal road. Avoid the masses by coming during the week, when most people are at work or school.

Contact: vouliagmeni-akti.gr

Price:  It varies from beach to beach - some are free but charge for sun beds; others charge for entry. Vouliagmeni, for example, charges (£8.50; Mon-Sun, May to Oct) or €5 entry (£4.20; Mon-Sun, Oct to April).

Watch the sunset at an ancient temple

Built as a place of worship to Poseidon, the god of the sea, earthquakes and horses, the fifth-century-BC Temple of Poseidon stands on the southernmost point of the Attica peninsula in Cape Sounion. Originally made up of 34 white marble Doric columns, 15 of which remain, it commands amazing views over the Aegean Sea, which are particularly spectacular at sunset.

Insider tip: The coastal road from Athens to Sounio passes through the seaside suburbs of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, and affords fine views over the Saronic Gulf – you could combine a day at the beach with an early-evening visit to Sounio.

Visit an ancient pilgrimage site

Greece's most beautiful classical site, Delphi, was the home of the fabled Oracle which spoke its prophesies (with the help of trance-inducing leaves) through priestesses. Dating back beyond the eighth century BC, the hillside site, which is two-and-a-half hours from Athens, is scattered with ancient temples overlooking a gaping chasm, and is backed by Mt Parnassos. There’s also an excellent museum displaying bronze and marble sculptures.

Insider tip: On the road back to Athens is the mountain village of Arahova (about seven miles away). It's an upmarket winter resort and a great place to stop for a late lunch and shop for fluffy flokati rugs and locally produced formaela cheese.

Opening times: Daily, 8am-8pm summer; 8am-3pm winter

Go island hopping for the day

Despite having a spectacular coastline nearby, most wealthy Athenians prefer to escape to the islands in summer. The nearest islands, Aegina and Angistri, lie in the Argo-Saronic Gulf and can be done as a day trip. Both have lovely sand and pebble beaches, giving onto sparling clean sea, and plenty of tavernas serving locally caught fresh fish. The fastest way is with  Hellenic Seaways ' 'flying dolphins' (catamarans): Pireaus to Aegina takes 40 minutes; Pireaus to Angistri is 55 minutes. They run several times a day year-round.

Insider tip: Ferries, hydrofoils and catamarans from Athens' port Piraeus to the islands get very busy on summer weekends, as do the islands themselves (booking in advance is recommended). To avoid the crowds, do this as a weekday trip.
