Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

For smokers and non-smokers alike, knowing where smoking is (and isn’t!) allowed on your cruise is so important. In this guide to cruise line smoking policies, I’ll explain the guidelines for where it’s OK to smoke on a cruise and where it’s strictly forbidden.

Whether you’d prefer to steer clear of any secondhand smoke on your cruise vacation, or you’re a smoker looking for the right place to light up on your upcoming cruise, I’ll share all the basics you need to know.

Plus, I’ve included a line-by-line list of smoking policies for 39 cruise lines, as well as a handy chart to see the basic policies at a glance.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

In general, you can still smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated areas. If you’re not sure where the smoking areas are, you can ask any member of the crew and they’ll give you directions.

no smoking cruise ships

Cruise lines have significantly tightened up their smoking policies over the last twenty years, but there’s still at least one designated smoking area on just about every ship. In fact, of the 39 cruise lines I researched, only one has any completely non-smoking ships!

Sorry, you’ll have to keep reading to find out which cruise ships are entirely smoke-free!

What can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines allow passengers to smoke tobacco in their designated smoking areas. However, no cruise lines allow cannabis or CBD in any form on their ships. This applies to smoking and vaping materials, as well as edibles and topical ointments. Even with a prescription, it’s still not allowed.

Smoking cigars or pipes on a cruise

Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges.

no smoking cruise ships

If you like to relax with a cigar or a pipe, make sure you ask a crewmember which smoking sections you can use. It might not be all of them!

Vaping on a cruise

Using e-cigarettes (vaping) is usually only allowed in designated smoking areas. But there are a few exceptions!

A handful of cruise lines, including Cunard and Holland America, allow vaping in passenger staterooms. (Princess Cruises also used to allow vaping in staterooms, but that rule has recently changed.)

One cruise line, Regent Seven Seas, actually allows vaping in interior parts of the ship, except in the dining areas.

Smoking on stateroom balconies

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in).

However, there are currently five cruise lines that still allow smoking on your balcony: Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA.

no smoking cruise ships

There are some ships on these lines that have non-smoking balcony sections—or even entire ships where smoking on balconies is prohibited—so be sure you book your stateroom on the right ship and in the correct section.

Smoking at cruise ship bars

Most bars on cruise ships—indoors and on deck—are non-smoking. There are some exceptions, like cigar bars and designated lounges, but not every ship has this feature.

But, many designated smoking areas are located close enough to bars that crewmembers will come around to take drink orders and deliver them right to you.

Smoking in cruise ship casinos

Many cruise lines with onboard casinos allow smoking in at least a section of their casinos. Smoking privileges are usually reserved for active players, and often at slot machines or select table games only.

no smoking cruise ships

Some cruise lines have specific times where the casino is entirely non-smoking. If all the ashtrays have suddenly disappeared from what was previously a smoking section, just ask a crew member. Odds are it’s the casino’s non-smoking time.

Today there are many cruise lines that have completely non-smoking casinos. Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, don’t allow smoking at any time in the casino.

Smoking during bunkering

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bunkering”, it’s the ship’s refueling process. During certain port stops, your cruise ship will be topped up with fuel and smoking won’t be permitted on any of the exterior open deck areas.

The process usually lasts a few hours, and on some ships this means there are zero places where smoking is allowed during bunkering.

What happens if you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines are very strict with their smoking policies, and can assess hefty fines for people who are caught smoking in non-smoking areas. They can even kick you off the ship at the next port!

no smoking cruise ships

And no, you won’t get a refund if you’re disembarked for breaking a cruise line policy. You’ll also need to find your way home at your own expense—not a fun way to end your vacation!

Buying cigarettes or cigars on a cruise ship

Most larger cruise ships sell cigarettes and cigars on board. You can usually ask for cigarettes at any of the ship’s bars. If the ship has an indoor smoking lounge or cigar bar, you can often buy cigars there.

The onboard duty-free shops also usually carry cigarettes by the carton and cigars by the box. However, some cruise lines will hold your duty-free items until the last night of the cruise.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on cruises that begin in U.S. ports. For sailings embarking from most other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Tip: Although you can usually buy cigars or cigarettes, lighters and matches can be hard to come by on board. Be sure to bring extras before you sail.

Best cruise lines for non-smokers

If you’re a non-smoker and you really don’t want to be around cigarette smoke, many cruise lines do a fairly good job keeping the designated smoking areas hidden away.

But smoking areas (especially on large cruise lines with a variety of ship classes) can vary widely from one ship to another. You might find that the smoking area on one ship is so far from the action that you’d never know it was there. But another ship on the very same line might allow smoking on half of the pool deck! (I’ve noticed this on both Carnival’s and Norwegian’s fleets as examples.)

Some cruise lines also allow smoking in their casinos, and that smoke tends to travel. If you’re a non-smoker who likes to play in the casino (or you just want to avoid wafting smoke), these cruise lines have entirely non-smoking casinos:

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, celestyal cruises, cunard line, marella cruises, oceania cruises.

  • Regent Seven Seas

Virgin Voyages

Overall, the best cruise lines for people who want to avoid smoke on their cruise vacation include:

Disney Cruise Line

Seadream yacht club.

  • Viking (Ocean and River)

Windstar Cruises

Read more about what Seabourn has to offer in my article Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

Most large cruise ships sell cigarettes at the bar areas, as well as in the duty-free shops. Duty-free purchases may be held until the last night of the cruise, depending on your cruise line’s policy.

If you have any questions about smoking policies on cruise ships, feel free to pop them in the comments below. Or, if you’ve noticed that a cruise line smoking policy has changed, please let me know so I can update the post!

What ships have the most smoking areas

Hi Linda, the cruise lines that have the most smoking areas on their ships are Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA - simply because they permit smoking on stateroom balconies. If you're a smoker and you're not planning to cruise on one of these lines, consider looking at Carnival, Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean, or Holland America. You'll generally find at least a couple of smoking areas on each of their ships, and most of their ships allow smoking in the casino (with the exception of Australia-based ships). Hope this helps!

Smoking Policies on Cruise Ships: Which Cruise Lines Allow What

J. Souza

The smoking policies with different cruise lines and cruise ships are always changing, but we will try to keep this page updated when a company decides to make a change to its smoking policy.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, this is where the cruise lines stand in regards to their smoking policies:

Carnival Cruise Line:

Carnival Cruise Line has designated areas where smokers can smoke in public areas, including certain areas of the casino (while playing designated slots machines and table games) and Liquid Nightclub.   Almost every other public area is a non-smoking zone, including dining rooms and other public rooms.  Smoking is not permitted in cabins or on balconies.

Royal Caribbean:

Smoking is prohibited in all areas of Royal Caribbean ships except for the starboard side of open decks, and a designated area of a public room.  Open or closed decks on the port side of the ship are non-smoking zones (exception for the Oasis class ships).    As with most cruise lines the dining rooms are also smoke-free.  Smoking is allowed in the casinos, although select cruises from China will have a non-smoking area.

Disney Cruise Line:

Disney Cruise Line does not permit smoking in any indoor areas. Smoking is allowed on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the starboard side of deck 4, and on the port side of deck 9.  Smoking on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy is as follows: Deck 4 port side, aft, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; Deck 12 port side aft; and Deck 13 port side forward.

Norwegian Cruise Line:

Norwegian allows for smoking on designated areas of open decks, in casinos (if you are a player), and cigar bars.   Smoking is prohibited in cabins and on balconies.  Smoking is permitted on the starboard side of the Waterfront on the Getaway and Breakaway, with an exception being in the dining areas.

MSC Cruises:

MSC does not allow any smoking in cabins or on balconies.  Smoking is permitted in several bars on each ship, and on one side (indicated by signage) of the principal outdoor pool deck areas, where ashtrays are provided.

Costa Cruises

As with MSC, Costa does not permit smoking in cabins or balconies.  They do allow smoking on open decks and in designated smoking areas available in some public rooms.  No smoking is allowed in restaurants and show lounges.

Princess Cruises:

Princess allows for smoking in the cigar lounge, the casino, and in some areas on open decks.  No smoking is allowed in cabins or balconies and all food services areas.  Cigar and pipe smoking is only allowed on open decks.

Celebrity Cruises:

Celebrity does not allow smoking in their cabins or balconies, but there are a few designated smoking areas across the ship.  Certain areas on the port side of the ship are available for smokers.   Smoking is not permitted in the casino or in any food services areas.

Holland America:

Smoking is not permitted in cabins or on balconies.   Smokers can smoke on open decks and in designated areas in most public rooms. Smoking is allowed in the casino for active players only.  Show lounges and food service areas are non-smoking.

Crystal Cruises:

Crystal now does not allow smoking in indoor areas, as they once allowed smoking in cabins.   Outdoor smoking areas will be available in certain parts of the ship and a designated smoking lounge will be available for smokers.

just cancelled our holiday with Celebrity we booked a balcony suite so I could have a cup of tea and cigarette during the night I have cancer and a lot of pain especially at night so therefore find it difficult to sleep and wouldn’t dream of asking my husband to take me to a designated smoking area I wouldnt smoke on the balcony during the day but the nights are so long for me

They should allow smoking in the balconies. For goodness, it is open air! That is why we don’t take cruises anymore. That used to be our first choice for vacations! There should be smoking and non smoking rooms, think about how much money these cruiseline are loosing because of the policy.

IF cruise lines could VERY efficiently remove tobacco smoke (by more enclosed/very powerful exhaust fans?) from common areas like open aft pool area on (for ex) Holland America-Westerdam-where smoking was allowed, that would be acceptable. There were only 2 medium sized pools on the Westerdam, one enclosed, the other exposed But as it was on my recent trip thru Panama Canal, smoke was intolerable in over half of the exterior pool deck which meant no strolling over to view over the starboard side at all! Nor could one go directly to the bar to order unless prepared to battle the stifling lack of air. I realize these people paid to travel too BUT everyone in the civilized world knows second-hand smoke kills, plus some of us are highly allergic to it. THAT’S when their rights to smoke override my need for clear oxygenated air! and I adamantly object! If you have to smoke, try those artificial ones for the 2 week trip..or better yet..do yourself a favor and begin your cruise with a life-saving attempt to quit!

They ONLY give a very small areas of the ship to smoke, maybe if they gave us more areas there wouldn’t be a high concentration of smoke. Maybe YOU should just stay out of the smoking areas period. There are plenty of bars to go to.

You are worried about 2nd hand smoking killing you, but breath carcinogenics on a daily basis .. ok

Love people complaining about second hand smoke outside. Most if not all will sit be a fire with their kids making Smores or just visiting. A fire made with 10lbs of wood contains 4,300 times more carcinogenic polyaromatc hydrocarbons than 30 cigarettes according to EPA estimates. Yes, it might smell better but it’s also deadlier. News flash! There is no clean oxygenated air on this planet. It’s been so polluted by manufacturing, car exhaust, etc.

Smokers have rights too. Their money is as good as non smokers and respect should be shown to both sides. At the end of the day we are all trying to enjoy ourselves and relax

Smoking is DISGUSTING and should be banned on all cruise ships! Most smokers are dirty and drop their nasty cigarette butts wherever they’re standing, also the second hand smoking is completely offensive.

Holland America effective 2017 no balcony smoking or cabin smoking. Ecigs in cabins but not balconies.

No smoking. SMOKING SHOULD BE BANNED IN ALL AREAS AND ON ALL SHIPS

I think you need to read Princess Cruises smoking policy again…cigats and pipes are only allowed on open decks if the ship does NOT have a cigar lounge. If it has one…cigars and pipes are only allowed in the cigar lounge

No More Cough-Cough: Top Cruise Ships for Nonsmokers, 2009

By Frommer's Staff

More than a year and a half after our first-ever survey of cruise line smoking regulations, the cruise industry continues to move away from Mad Men style nicotine sophistication and into, well, the 21st century.

Take a look: Around the country, 34 states have banned smoking in many public places, and 24 of those even have no-smoking rules for bars. Across the pond, England, Ireland, Scotland, France (France!), Italy, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Iceland have all banned smoking in most public places nationwide, including bars and clubs. Smokers can still light up wherever they want in, oh, Chad, but since we haven't seen a noticeable uptick in Chadian tourism, we can assume the ability to light up isn't the main driver behind smokers' vacation choices.

Which is a good thing for the cruise lines, 'cause the trend there is definitely following the worldwide pattern. Over the past two years, anti-smoking rules have become more and more stringent industry-wide. Generally, ships now prohibit smoking in all restaurants, theaters, corridors, elevators, and many other public areas, too. If you want to light up, most lines still let you do so in the smoking sections of bars and lounges, out on the open decks, and in your cabin and private balcony, but some are even clamping down on those retreats.

It's a simple matter of changing demographics. "The majority of our guests are non-smoking," says Crystal Cruises' President Gregg Michel, "and travelers are used to more non-smoking environments today." Ron Santangelo, North America president of Peter Deilmann Cruises, concurs: "With Europe following America's lead in passing laws that help reduce the effects of smoking on non-smokers, we are happy to adjust our policy to fully participate in this effort."

The Best Ships for Non-Smokers

The following cruise lines prohibit smoking not only in the majority of public areas but also in all their cabins (eliminating any possibility of residual odors), cabin balconies, and even outside public decks.

American Cruise Lines ( www.americancruiselines.com ): Small-ship line ACL is entirely smoke-free. Smoking is prohibited both indoors and on the outside decks.

Azamara Cruises ( www.azamaracruises.com ): Smoking is banned everywhere aboard Azamara's two ships with the exception of two small areas: one indoors, in the aft port-side section of the Looking Glass Lounge, the other outdoors, in the starboard forward section of the Pool Deck. Azamara also follows a no-smoking policy on all land components of its cruisetours.

Oceania Cruises ( www.oceaniacruises.com ): As aboard Azamara (whose ships are more or less identical to Oceania's), smoking is prohibited except in two areas: one indoors, in the aft port corner of Horizons observation lounge, and one outdoors, in the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck. Cigar and pipe smoking are only permitted in the latter.

Semi-Smoke-Free Runners Up

American Canadian Caribbean Line ( www.accl-smallships.com ): Smoking is allowed on outside decks only on this small-ship line. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside.

American Safari Cruises ( www.amsafari.com ): Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas of this line's small yachts. Smokers may light up on outside decks only.

Celebrity Cruises ( www.celebrity.com ): Smoking is prohibited in staterooms, on stateroom balconies, in all dining venues, and in the casino, theater, corridors, and elevators. Cigarette smoking is permitted only in a few designated indoor and outdoor areas of each ship, and cigar and pipe smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas. Cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. Violations carry a $250 penalty charged to the guest's onboard account. There is also a non-smoking policy on all land components of Celebrity cruisetours.

Cruise West ( www.cruisewest.com ): Smoking is allowed only in designated areas of outside decks on these small ships. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside.

Disney Cruise Line ( www.disneycruise.com ): Smoking is permitted only in designated areas of the ship. Guests are allowed to smoke only on open decks (except near the children's pool), on their stateroom balcony, and in the designated "adult" lounges onboard: Sessions and Rockin' Bar D on Disney Magic and WaveBands and The Cadillac Lounge on Disney Wonder.

Lindblad Expeditions ( www.expeditions.com ): Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas on Lindblad's small, expedition-oriented ships. No smoking is permitted anywhere inside.

Maine Windjammers ( www.sailmainecoast.com ): None of the owner-operated Maine windjammers permit smoking anywhere below decks, but other rules vary by boat. Several captains prohibit smoking anywhere on board, while others designate a downwind smoking area.

MSC Cruises ( www.msccruises.com ): On all MSC vessels, smoking is permitted only in the cigar lounge, the casino, in one dedicated lounge, and on one side of the sun deck. Smoking is prohibited in all cabins and cabin balconies.

Peter Deilmann Cruises ( www.deilmann-cruises.com ): You know the worm has turned on smoking when even the Germans ban cigarettes from their ships. That's what happened fourteen months ago when Peter Deilmann Cruises announced a new smoking ban for all indoor areas of its single oceangoing vessel, the beautiful 513-passenger Deutschland. Smoking is now permitted only on Deutschland 's outside decks.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ( www.rssc.com ): Smoking is prohibited in all staterooms and stateroom balconies, in all enclosed dining areas, and in most public rooms. Cigarette smoking is permitted only in designated areas of the outdoor Pool Grills, on deck areas, and in the casino, the cigar lounge, and the pool bar, as well as in a designated area of the nightclub and an outside portion of the observation lounge. Pipe smoking is only permitted in the cigar lounge, and cigars may be smoked in the cigar lounge and in a designated section of the Pool Bar. Violations of the smoking policy result in the guest being asked to leave the ship at his or her expense, without refund or credit.

Royal Caribbean International ( www.royalcaribbean.com ): Smoking is prohibited in cabins and in all restaurants, corridors, entertainment venues, and most other public spaces. Cigarette smoking is permitted only in designated areas of the ships' bars and lounges, on ocean-facing cabin balconies (i.e., not on Boardwalk- or Central ParkÂ?facing balconies on the new Oasis-class ships), and on outside decks on the starboard side of the ship. One lounge aboard each ship is designated totally non-smoking. Pipe and cigar smoking is only permitted in the cigar lounge or, on ships that don't have them, in a specifically designated area. Cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. Violations carry a $250 penalty charged to the guest's onboard account.

Sea Cloud Cruises ( www.seacloud.com ): Smoking is permitted only on open decks, and is prohibited in all indoor areas.

SeaDream Yacht Club ( www.seadream.com ): Smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas, including cabins. No cabins aboard these ships have private balconies, so that's not an option either. Smoking is permitted outdoors only on Decks 3, 4, and 6, but even there it's banned during all meal hours.

Star Clippers ( www.starclippers.com ): Star Clippers follows a nonsmoking policy in all cabins and indoor public areas except a portion of the piano bar lounge. Smoking is permitted on outside decks. Pipe and cigar smoking is allowed only on open decks.

Windstar Cruises ( www.windstarcruises.com ): Smoking is prohibited in all staterooms and public spaces. Smoking is permitted only in designated areas of the outside decks.

Rules on the Rest

Here's a rundown on smoking rules aboard the other major cruise lines.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Costa Cruises ( www.costacruise.com ): Smoking is permitted in cabins and private balconies and in designated areas of most public rooms on board. It's prohibited in the restaurants and show lounges.

Crystal Cruises ( www.crystalcruises.com ): Cigarette smoking is permitted in cabins and at designated tables in most bars and lounges, but most public areas are smoke-free, including the main dining room, the bistro, the indoor portions of the buffet restaurant, the alternative restaurants, the show lounge, the Starlite Club aboard Crystal Symphony, and all private balconies. Pipes and cigars are permitted only in the Connoisseur Club and on most open decks (except all areas of Lido Deck). Pipes and cigars may not be smoked in cabins, on cabin balconies, or in the ships' corridors.

Cunard Line ( www.cunard.com ): Elevators and all restaurants are designated as totally non-smoking, while public rooms offer both smoking and non-smoking areas. Pipes and cigar smoking is limited to the cigar lounge.

Holland America Line ( www.hollandamerica.com ): Smoking is prohibited in all dining areas and in showrooms during performances. Smoking is permitted in designated areas of most bars/lounges, in cabins, on cabin balconies, and on the open decks.

Norwegian Cruise Line ( www.ncl.com ): Smoking is prohibited in almost all public areas aboard NCL's ships, including restaurants, performance venues, and bars/lounges. Cigarette smoking is permitted only in cabins, on cabin balconies, in the casino, in the Cigar Bar (on ships that have them), and on most open decks (excluding the food-service areas, sport decks, kids' pool areas, and other designated no-smoking zones). Pipe and cigar smokers must contain themselves to the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge and to the smoking zones on the outside decks.

Princess Cruises ( www.princess.com ): Smoking is prohibited in the dining rooms and other food-service areas and in the show lounges and theaters. Smoking is permitted in cabins, on cabin balconies, on the outside decks, and in designated areas of most public rooms. Pipe and cigar smoking is prohibited in all public rooms.

Seabourn Cruise Line ( www.seabourn.com ): Smoking is prohibited in most public areas, including all restaurants, the show lounge, the casino, the nightclub, the spa, the ships' elevators, corridors, lobbies, and the port side of the Observation Lounge. On the upcoming Seabourn Odyssey and Seabourn Sojourn, it will also be prohibited on all of deck 8 (including the Patio Bar, Patio Grill, and pool area) and deck 11 (including the Retreat and Sun Terrace). Cigarette smoking is permitted in cabins and on cabin balconies. Pipe and cigar smoking is permitted only on outside decks.

Silversea Cruises ( www.silversea.com ): Most public areas are non-smoking. Cigarette smoking is permitted only at designated smoking tables in some bars and lounges and in certain areas on open decks. Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted in the cigar lounge and in designated outdoor areas on decks 5 and 6 aboard Prince Albert II , on open decks 9 and 10 aboard Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper , and on open deck 9 aboard Silver Cloud and Silver Wind .

Cruise Line Smoking Policies: A Smoker’s Guide to Cruising

by The Cruise Web Team October 3, 2019

Share Facebook Twitter Google Plus Pinterest Email

Many people are aware that cigars are enjoyed by many-a-passenger on cruise ships, but can you smoke cigarettes? What about vaping? And hey, its 2019, what’s the deal with cannabis and cruising? As for that last one, it’s a big no-go, and for good reason. While marijuana has been legalized in many states in the United States, it is still federally banned and all cruise lines listed err on the side of caution and make it very clear that any possession or use of illegal substances will result in immediate disembarkation and any travel expenses incurred as a result are solely the responsibility of the passenger. While enjoying your cruise, you’re often free to light up, given you follow ship and cruise line policies! And be aware that cruise lines take the following policies very seriously, as cigarette smoke can be a health and safety hazard, or simply retract from the experience of others.

Smoking Policies by Cruise Line

AmaWaterways Smoking is permitted outside only, on the aft side of the sun deck. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Avalon Waterways Smoking is permitted outside only, with the area dependent on destination. In Europe and South America, smoking is only allowed on the sky deck. And if you’re sailing with Avalon on the Mekong or Ganges River, smoking is permitted only in designated areas. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Azamara Smoking is permitted on the port side, forward area of the pool deck. All other areas of Azamara ships and Azamara land tours are strictly smoke-free. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Carnival Cruise Line Smoking is permitted in select areas of each Carnival ship, of which a list can be found here . In general, smoking is limited to specific outdoor areas and certain nightclubs and casino spaces onboard. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Cruises has designated certain areas of the ship as “smoking areas.” Generally, smoking is not permitted except in designated areas. Smoking is not permitted inside any guest stateroom; nor on any guest veranda. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Crystal Cruises (Ocean and River) Aboard all Crystal ships, smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas only. Smoking is not allowed in public rooms, suites or any area that is not designated as a smoking area. Indoor smoking is permitted only in the Connoisseur Club smoking lounge (aboard Crystal Mozart , Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony only) and upon request, in the VIP Casino (during play). Smoking is prohibited in all other indoor areas of the ship, including all other public rooms, lounges, corridors and restaurants, as well as all staterooms, suites and verandahs. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers. Permitted Smoking Areas (Including Electronic Cigarettes, Cigars and Pipes):

  • Connoisseur Club on Crystal Endeavor , Crystal Mozart , Crystal Serenity , Crystal Symphony
  • VIP Casino on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony (during play, upon request)
  • Deck 4 on Crystal Bach , Crystal Debussy , Crystal Mahler and Crystal Ravel
  • Deck 5, aft, portside on Crystal Esprit
  • Decks 10, 9 and 8 aft on Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity
  • Deck 11, aft Crystal Serenity
  • Seahorse pool area, port side only (cigarettes and e-cigarettes only)
  • Promenade Deck, port side only (cigarettes and e-cigarettes only)

Cunard Smoking (including electronic alternatives) is not permitted in staterooms, on stateroom balconies or in public rooms. You will find designated areas on the open decks, where smoking is permitted. The only exception to this is Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, which is reserved for cigar and pipe smokers only. All restaurants are non-smoking, and this includes outdoor dining alternatives. Electronic cigarettes and vaporizing devices, including those which do not emit smoke/vapor, are permitted in designated smoking areas only.

Holland America Line All staterooms, showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah. Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows, unless otherwise noted:

  • On  Koningsdam , and  Nieuw Statendam , smoking is allowed on the port side only.
  • Sun Bar on  Koningsdam and  Nieuw Statendam
  • Sports Deck forward and aft of Crow’s Nest on starboard side on  Maasdam ,  Veendam ,  Volendam ,  Zaandam ,  Rotterdam and  Amsterdam
  • Oak Room on  Noordam only, including cigar and pipe smoking

MSC Cruises Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted in staterooms, on stateroom balconies and anywhere not expressly indicated by signage and ashtrays.

Norwegian Cruise Line Smoking is prohibited on stateroom balconies. Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on private sun decks.Public areas throughout all ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship’s management based on the ship’s specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children’s pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding near any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location. Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests’ perception is that Norwegian is not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Oceania Cruises Designated Smoking Areas are available on the forward, starboard corner of the Pool Deck and in the aft, port corner of Horizons. These areas are comfortably furnished and conveniently located near food and beverage areas. Smoking is expressly forbidden in all staterooms and suites, on verandas, or in any areas of the ship other than officially Designated Smoking Areas. All areas other than those specified as Designated Smoking Areas will remain smoke-free. This includes all guest suites and staterooms, verandas, restaurants, public areas, the Casino and all other areas of the ship. Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward, starboard corner of the Pool Deck. Guests are welcome to use electronic cigarettes except in dining venues which includes indoor and outdoor seating.

Paul Gauguin Cruises Smoking is prohibited in all suites, staterooms, indoor public areas and private balconies. There are multiple outdoor areas on the ship where smoking is permitted.

Princess Cruises Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available onboard and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub, as well as a portion of the open decks. The Casino and Casino Bar are non-smoking areas on board, with the exception of designated slot machines where guests are permitted to smoke only while playing at those machines. All table games are non-smoking. The Casino will also have one or more non-smoking nights (6 pm to closing), depending on length of voyage. Show lounges, dining rooms and all food services areas on board all Princess ships are non-smoking. Princess Cruises prohibits smoking in guest staterooms and balconies. The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within the confines of the guest’s stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within designated smoking areas only. Cigar Smoking is only permitted in the Connoisseur Club on applicable ships and the designated area on the opposite side of the Pool Bar. Pipe smoking is only permitted in the Connoisseur Club. Guests are asked to refrain from smoking on shore excursions/tours, especially since many historical sites and other tourist attractions in Europe are now smoke-free. Smoking is not allowed aboard any sightseeing motorcoach.

100% Non-Smoking on Ships!

It was just brought to our attention that in their new brochure, Viking is instituting no smoking on their ships! There is no mention of any limited area outside for smoking. On our January Sky cruise, there was a small area on top of the ship in the snow where smoking was permitted. They certainly will be leading the industry with this policy. We are thrilled to see this! I'm sure some others will not be so happy.

There is just something deliciously ironic/oxymoronic about your use of cruise ship in the snow. ❄️ ❄️

Thanks for the good news about 100% non-smoking.

Would you kindly take a pic of the wording in the brochure and post it here. Thanks

The picture of the page of Viking's latest brochure is posted on a Celebrity thread someone recently started asking if there were any non-smoking ships. Post #40 by DrKoob shows the page titled "What Viking is not". Sorry I don't know to copy that page to here. He circled no smoking. The same information shows up on Viking's website when you click on the subject "What Viking is not".

This is interesting since we just got off Viking Jupiter and this was definitely NOT the case.  Although it certainly did not bother us, we did notice that the smoking area on the 8th level starboard side had been increased in size from our previous Viking Sky and Sea cruises.  We had, however, no issue with smoke going anywhere.  It was just a bit sad seeing so many smokers all crammed in together in the area.  From California, we just are not used to that - but there were many Europeans onboard.  I would imagine if Viking were to ban smoking altogether they might lose a decent smoking audience, but probably would gain the ever increasing non-smoking audience.

Interesting to see how long then it will take to remove the smoking areas - and enforce it from those who are used to it, if the brochures now state all No Smoking.

I'm not quite sure how one can read that the ship is 100% non-smoking from this bit of advertising. This has been on the Viking website for a number of years now and while there is no smoking except in the small area on deck 8, this is not an announcement that the ship is changing its current policy. The piece also proclaims "No waiting in lines" when any fool can tell you that there is simply no way that lines can be completely prevented at all times.

I would definitely have to agree with you, Peregrina.

Seems there was a recent post or two as well where 2 opposite sides were arguing over "false advertising" on just this subject.  No doubt, someone will try to get their attorney involved and claim damages.  🙂 smile.....

I had posted on the other non-smoking thread on ships to correct someone who said Viking was non-smoking, but she came back saying her brochure said...Then someone else posted the page in the newest brochure and circled the no smoking part of the "What Viking is Not". He stated it was a new policy to go into effect soon. Since I also saw this on Viking's site with no exceptions listed, I believed it to be true, especially when (with the exception of the iffy "no lines" comment), everything else on that page is true. Sorry if I took Viking literally. Why is it in their literature and website?

It is called advertising and advertising is the business of attracting people to a product by creating dreams of things we could be, see or do if only we would use their product. Advertising has never been about fact and has always been about persuasion.

From the Viking website under Frequently Asked Question:

All Viking ship interiors, staterooms and balconies are nonsmoking except for the designated outdoor smoking area on the starboard side of Deck 8. Smoking restrictions also apply to e-cigarettes.

Although my wife and I are both nonsmokers, I have no problem with the designated smoking area on Deck 8. However, what tends to happen is that those smokers either don't realize smoking on their balcony is prohibited or choose to ignore that restriction. It is so discouraging to set up to enjoy a meal or a glass of wine on one's balcony only to have cigarette or cigar smoke come wafting in.

Such infractions can be reported. It is a matter of safety for the entire ship.

I am a non smoker, hate the habit, it killed my father, but in our experience the few smokers on Viking are respectful and stick to the rules, it’s a non issue and not worth stressing about.

deec

They would probably just deny it and make me look like an idiot.

Sorry to have started this thread. Just talked to my Viking agent who talked to Operations. There is no plan to eliminate the smoking areas on top of any of the Viking Ocean ships. Makes no sence that Viking's own advertising, both in print and on their website, states that no smoking  is something that makes their ships different. Their actual policy is no different than 90% of the cruise lines.

40 minutes ago, Peregrina651 said:   Such infractions can be reported. It is a matter of safety for the entire ship.

I agree completely Peregrina651, and on occasion I have been successful in reporting it but generally it is difficult to pinpoint which balcony the smell is coming from.

As Haworth said, such occurrences are rare but when you take just one cruise a year, and there is an inconsiderate smoker 2-5 cabins up-wind, that's all it takes to restrict using your own balcony for the 7-10 days of that cruise.

I enjoy an occasional cigar and while cruising, I respect the rules and appreciate that they provide a somewhat, but not always sheltered spot.  Those who choose to smoke and disregard the rules are not only creating a safety issue and disrespecting other cruisers, but are risking the removal of the ability to smoke at all on the ship.  I have found that the smoker's area is generally not occupied by more than 3-4 people at a time and with the port intensive itineraries, time there is generally underway with the breeze dissipating the smoke rapidly. I encourage any smokers reading this that choose to disregard the rules to reconsider their actions or smoking may be banned entirely.  As an aside, as stated previously, there are generally a small number there at any time, but in my several Viking Cruises I get to know most, if not all, of the smokers on the cruise (some of the best conversations and relationships) and the percentage based on 930 passengers has averaged about 3-4% of the passengers.

Well stated ropomo.  We are non-smokers, but certainly felt that the area on level 8 for smokers was just fine and did not affect anyone on the ship.  We did not encounter smokers on balconies near ours, but can see how that would definitely be a problem.  Also observed and agree with you observations of about 3-4 % of passengers - on all 3 of our Viking Ocean Cruises.

We did encounter smokers on some walking tours who could not wait for the tour to complete, but fortunately they lingered towards the back and didn't affect anyone too much.  Especially in Europe where a high percentage of people smoke.  We noticed that the outdoor cafes in nearly every European country we visited were dominated by smokers - but that has always been their culture.

moatenote

My concern is that if there is no permissible smoking area, then smokers will be much more inclined to sneak a smoke on their balconies, etc.  I'm happy to report that we've never smelled smoke while enjoying our balconies on 3 previous VO cruises.  (lol hope I didn't just jinx the next one!)

If you read the rest of this thread, you will see that OP's statement was wrong and Viking has no plans to change its current policy of smoking in the Deck 8 smoking area only.

Let them deny it. No one can make me look like an idiot, unless I let them.

Non-smokers.

Would gladly report anyone smoking on their balcony that we could smell. Would follow up to ensure continued compliance.

No problem with the existing top deck section for smokers.  Smokers like to cruise too.

4 Things to love about Margaritaville at Sea's new cruise ship

I recently took a 5-night cruise on the newly launched Margaritaville at Sea Islander with my wife and two children, and before we boarded the ship, we were admittedly skeptical.

To say that the cruise line’s first ship, Paradise, doesn’t have many stellar reviews would be a big understatement. Plus, while my wife and I love the Margaritaville brand in general, we are used to bringing our two kids (8 and 6 years old) on extremely kid-friendly Carnival ships.

To our pleasant surprise, we had a fantastic time on the cruise. But there’s no such thing as a perfect cruise experience (at least, I haven’t found one). With that in mind, here’s what we loved about sailing on Islander, and a few things that could use improvement.

1. We loved MAS Islander's theming and décor

The Margaritaville at Sea Islander isn’t exactly a new ship. It was acquired from Carnival's Costa Cruise Line and was originally launched in 1999 as the Costa Atlantica. So, it’s really a 25-year-old ship.

To be sure, there were some parts of the ship that showed their age. For example, the nightclub is almost identical to what I remember from my first Carnival cruise in the early 2000s.

But for the most part, this feels like a new ship. All rooms and public areas are beautifully renovated, and the décor gave an excellent “Margaritaville” vibe without being over-the-top.

2. We loved MAS Islander's food and beverage options

After reading some of the early reviews, we didn’t quite know what to expect. But we found the food and beverage venues on the ship to be fantastic.

The Fins main dining room only does walk-in seating (no set dinner times), and we found the menu to be excellent. The Islander dining room offers the same food as Fins, with a few upscale options (for an additional charge unless you are staying iin a suite).

The JWB Steakhouse was the best steak dinner we’ve had on a ship. And the casual food options, including the buffet, Cheeseburger in Paradise, and Mexican Cutie (tacos and burritos), were excellent.

There were over 10 different bars on the ship, and each one had an excellent menu, including a different signature margarita.

3. We loved the MAS Islander crew

Earlier, I mentioned that we took a 5-night cruise. It actually turned into a 7-night cruise due to Hurricane Debby leaving us stuck in the Gulf of Mexico for two extra days. The crew handled the situation beautifully, and the current cruise director Zee-Jay is absolutely fantastic.

Related: I got stuck on Jimmy Buffett’s cruise line during a hurricane

From our stateroom attendant to the servers and bartenders, to the activities and kids’ club staff, the entire crew was upbeat and provided excellent service.

4. We loved MAS Islander's kid-friendliness

The Margaritaville brand is often associated with well, drinking Margaritas, and other adult-oriented activities. So, perhaps the biggest surprise of the trip was how much there was for kids to do.

The pools were very kid-friendly and never felt too crowded, there were several craft events and other things to do throughout the day for kids.

The kids club was a particular standout. Our kids’ ages put them both in the Parakeets Club, and while it’s a smaller space, the staff, and activities were top-notch.

On five different Carnival cruises, our kids have never asked to go to the kids club nearly as much as they did on Islander, and my 8-year-old daughter actually said she preferred the kids' camp to Carnival’s Camp Ocean (that’s high praise – she loves Camp Ocean).

And, now for the few things we did not like. And, it's worth noting, that Margaritaville at Sea has acknowledged both issues and plans to make changes.

1. The Islander's internet was barely usable

Of course, we didn’t love everything, and I have to start with the internet service. If there was something that would prevent me from sailing on Islander again anytime soon, this would be it. I typically do some writing while on cruises and need at least a decent internet connection.

More cruise:

  • Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville at Sea has found its niche
  • 3 things parents need to know before booking a cruise with kids
  • Carnival Cruise Line addresses key onboard parenting issue

Islander has internet packages available, and I had the Premium Internet package for the length of the cruise. But even with the upper-tier package, the internet was barely usable most of the time.

It was decent in some of the public areas, so I went and sat near the coffee shop when I needed to get anything done. In my room, the connection wasn’t strong enough to load a Google doc with any degree of reliability.

2. The Margaritaville at Sea casino program is clunky

I’m a bit of a casino player and generally prefer gambling on cruise ships to land casinos. Not only do cruise lines tend to offer more perks to their players, but I can combine some casual gambling with a family vacation, something that wouldn’t really work in Vegas.

On a positive note, the Islander’s casino was a beautiful space. All the tables and machines are brand new, and it’s 100% non-smoking. But there were a few things I found to be a bit clunky:

First, you need a separate player’s card for the casino and need to get one at the casino host desk (and show your driver’s license, which many people don’t carry around on a ship). On every other cruise line I’ve been on, your room card doubles as a player’s card.

Second, you can’t charge to your room directly from the machines. At least, I couldn’t figure out a way to do it. On other ships, I don’t need to carry around a ton of cash.

ALSO READ: Top travel agents share how to get the best price on your cruise

Third, the casino point and status tier systems are confusing, and even the employees don’t seem to know much about it. I asked two different hosts, the casino cashier, and a blackjack dealer, and not one of them could explain anything about how the points worked (although the host did comp us a steak dinner on the last night of the trip!).

This was the sixth cruise we’ve taken as a family, and even though we got stranded for two extra days, it was one of our favorites we’ve ever taken. Margaritaville at Sea has done a fantastic job with Islander, and while it isn’t perfect, we will definitely be back (at least, after they upgrade the internet).

Can I bring marijuana on a cruise ship?

Fran Golden

If you plan to smoke marijuana or ingest cannabis in any form on your cruise vacation, there are a bunch of rules you should know.

Most importantly, cruise ships operate under federal jurisdiction. While you may light up legally in some states — and some countries — it's illegal to have cannabis on a cruise ship, so you cannot get high on the high seas.

Does that mean you can't smoke marijuana on your cruise vacation? Not exactly. It depends on where you are cruising.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Cruise ships visit some states where private use of cannabis is legal, including Alaska, California, Washington, Maine, Massachusetts and New York. Additionally, Amsterdam is a popular stop on many Europe cruise itineraries. You might have an opportunity to indulge on land, but that does not mean you can walk right off the ship and light up.

Marijuana rules on cruise ships

no smoking cruise ships

It's important to know the cruise ship rules because violations come with stiff penalties, as every cruise passenger who has been caught has learned.

If you do smoke, say, on your cabin balcony, it might be your fellow cruise passengers who rat you out. The crew is also trained to spot and report any illegal drugs.

That's when the fun ends. Under the cruise contract you sign to board a ship, cruise lines have the right to search your room, throw you off the ship and turn you over to local authorities for any violations. From there, you could face fines and possible jail time. Your cruise vacation will come to an abrupt halt.

But is CBD allowed on cruise ships?

Cruise lines say very clearly that cannabis in any form is not allowed on board. It doesn't matter that medical marijuana is allowed in Florida or that you have a marijuana medical card. You can't bring pot or edibles — including those containing CBD — onto a cruise ship.

Virgin Voyages , for instance, specifies that "all illegal drugs, non-prescribed controlled substances, medically prescribed marijuana or synthetic marijuana and CBD products are prohibited." You'll find something similar on every other cruise line website.

As you board your cruise at the pier, you might notice customs or security officials with dogs. Among their duties is sniffing out drugs in carry-on baggage. Cruise lines also have technological means to find drugs in checked bags, though they don't publicly talk about that.

What happens if you 'forget' marijuana is illegal on your cruise ship and get caught?

Consider the case of a Pennsylvania woman who, in 2018, was found by customs officers to have two bags of pot in her purse as she boarded Royal Caribbean 's Anthem of the Seas in Bermuda. A subsequent search of her cabin found pipes, other paraphernalia and cannabis oil. She was arrested by Bermuda authorities and held in custody before pleading guilty to four counts of drug possession. She was fined $4,000, which she had to pay on the spot, and was then sent home — no cruise for her. The authorities did not accept her excuse that she didn't realize the items were in her bags.

More recently, in 2023, a nurse from Texas was banned for life from sailing with Carnival Cruise Line after port officials found CBD gummies in her luggage.

If you think you can cheat the system, consider that drug trafficking is among the possible charges for bringing marijuana into international waters.

Pot in port

no smoking cruise ships

Ports of call might have looser rules. For instance, despite efforts by Femke Halsema, Amsterdam's mayor, to ban tourists from the city's famous "coffee shops," you may still legally light up in these cafelike establishments. Menus typically feature loose grass, prerolled joints, hashish and some edibles, such as muffins, cookies, cupcakes and brownies. Some shops have added loaded gelato. Just remember: No takeout is allowed.

As part of your ocean or river cruise from Amsterdam, you might consider exploring the scene on a ganja walking tour . This and similar tours include snacks.

Despite the common belief that Jamaica is a pot free-for-all, smoking in public is illegal. Although violations are punishable by a fine, it's usually not much — 500 Jamaican dollars, which is about $3. To legally explore the scene, you might want to book a marijuana tour , where you visit a private weed-growing plantation and sip ganja tea while enjoying ganja cake.

High in Alaska

Alaska has been at the forefront of a movement in the U.S. to provide places where tourists and locals can light up socially.

Marijuana was legalized in Alaska for private use in 2014. Shops selling locally grown weed (and, in some cases, edibles) for adults ages 21 and older opened around the state, including in the cruise ports of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. However, the product was limited to use in private, leaving cruisers out of the picture.

After a drawn-out debate and after putting strict rules in place, Alaska's Alcohol & Marijuana Control Office approved two venues for on-site consumption in August 2021. These are among the first places in the nation approved to cater to locals and tourists.

Related: Alaska cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

The on-site consumption rules say that you may buy raw or edible (containing up to 10 milligrams of THC) cannabis products for on-site use — in a lounge behind a secured door or in a separate building.

Consumption lounges are popping up all over Alaska, including in Ketchikan, Juneau and Fairbanks, but they aren't always within walking distance of the cruise ports.

It is still illegal for tourists to take the products off-site. Alaska law bans consuming marijuana in public view, including while walking down the street or in city parks. If you're caught, you might be fined. It's also illegal to light up in any U.S. national park — and for much of your cruise in the Inside Passage in southeast Alaska, you are in national parkland.

Don't even try to bring your purchases back onto your cruise ship.

Post-cruise cannabis

One way to ensure the opportunity to smoke on your cruise vacation is to do a pre- or post-cruise stay at a cannabis-friendly hotel, assuming you are in a port city where pot is legal. A Google search will produce results.

For those sailing from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, check out Eaze, a leading California cannabis delivery service that delivers to certain hotels.
