napa winery tours family friendly

Napa Valley is without a doubt one of the most famous and popular places for wine tasting in the country, let alone California. From the rolling hills to the stunning vineyards, Napa Valley is a must-see for locals and visitors alike. Though wine tasting is typically seen as a 21+ activity, there are actually several family-friendly wineries in Napa Valley.

As we start to explore more of our favorite spots in Northern California with our daughter, I’m on the hunt for places we can all go together. Napa is always a favorite day trip for us and while we have our go-to’s, a few we can’t bring her with us. So after a bit of digging around, I found quite a few wineries we can definitely all go together to.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:

  • World Nomads (best for all-around)

Wine tasting is decidedly a very adult thing to do in that, well, legally you have to be an adult to do it. However, despite the age requirement, there are a few Napa Valley wineries that understand some families enjoy traveling together in Wine Country and therefore happily accommodate children.

Read on for some of the best family-friendly wineries in Napa where you and your kids will have a great time, and you can spend all of that babysitter money you’ll save on a case of wine to take home and enjoy later.

Inglenook

Inglenook is a majestically beautiful winery with a long standing winemaking heritage in Napa, and it’s a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience a slice of Wine Country history. Children 12 and over are allowed to join the Inglenook Library Tour and Tasting , which includes a tour of the chateau and vineyards, and finishes with a seated wine and cheese tasting in a private room, but for a truly family-friendly experience, skip that in favor of a more casual experience at The Bistro . There, you can dine outside in the courtyard and enjoy wines by the glass or bottle, as well as soft drinks, coffee, bistro bites, cheese, and charcuterie. While the adults sip and chat, the kids can borrow wooden sailboats to sail in the courtyard fountain, a la the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, which the Inglenook gardens were inspired by.

Sterling Vineyards

Sterling Vineyards

The only way to get to this Greek-style winery perched on a hilltop 300 feet above Calistoga is via an aerial tram ride, which is almost as thrilling (and definitely more unexpected) as any ride at an amusement park. You’ll have to be 21 or older to book a tasting experience (once the winery reopens its doors in late October 2023 –whoo hoo!), but children are allowed to accompany adults on what they refer to as the “Sterling Stroll.” This leisurely experience is self-guided, which means that you can go at your own pace so that no one gets fidgety, and while the adults are tasting, the kids can look forward to the thrill of getting to ride the gondola back down again. The views of Calistoga from the terrace on this mountaintop estate also make the perfect backdrop for a frame-worthy family photo.

Napa Cellars

Napa Cellars

Roll up to HALL’s St. Helena visitor hotspot, and both the kiddos and grown-ups are in for a whimsical treat, courtesy of the massive Bunny Foo-Foo sculpture greeting guests. Though the winery has made a name for itself for its acclaimed wine, particularly Cabernet , with over 35 pieces of contemporary art and a large lawn for relaxing, this long standing winery has something for everyone. You’ll have to be 21 to partake in most tastings and tours, but the Art of Cabernet Tasting is an option for those traveling with kiddos, and features four award-winning Cabernet Sauvignons (for the adults) alongside views of the vineyards and Mayacamas Mountains.

401 St. Helena Highway S, St. Helena, CA 94574

Charles Krug

Marking a stellar 40-year journey as a family-owned Napa Valley winery, PEJU remains a top pick for wine aficionados. Families, take note: the 60-minute Classic Seated Tasting awaits you at this Rutherford winery daily, with no reservations needed. While adults savor five of PEJU’s signature Napa Valley wines, adding a cheese plate or the chef’s assortment of nibbles ensures the youngsters have delightful munchies to keep them engaged.

8466 St. Helena Highway, Rutherford, CA 94573, (707) 963-3600

Frog’s Leap Winery

Frog's Leap Winery

Kids (and dogs on leashes) will love exploring this working farm where they’ll get to meet chickens , try to spot frogs in the fish pond, and roam gorgeous gardens that serve as both scenery and habitat. The Garden Bar Tasting is the only option for people with children, which is also one of the more casual tastings on offer. You’ll taste four wines as you learn about the winemaking philosophy , while the non-wine tasters in your group can take in the views of the gardens and orchards.

8815 Conn Creek Road, Rutherford, CA 94573, (707) 963-4704

So, now you know that Napa Valley isn’t just for wine connoisseurs; it can be a destination for families too. With a number of wineries embracing kid-friendly activities and amenities, it can make for a memorable family getaway. The next time you think of heading to Wine Country, remember it’s a toast to family bonding too!

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Parents visiting the San Francisco area may think they need to pass up a visit to nearby Napa Valley when they are traveling with kids. But, believe it or not, there are a whole host of family-friendly wineries offering grape juice tastings, kid- (and pet-) friendly picnic areas, aerial tram rides and more. You can easily rent a car and enjoy a day or two in wine country by following this easy road trip through family-friendly wineries.

Here are TPG's tips for planning a perfect family visit to San Francisco.

napa winery tours family friendly

Cornerstone Sonoma

Begin in Sonoma County in the town of Sonoma . Although not a winery, Cornerstone Sonoma is a charming marketplace that is home to three tasting rooms with great food, live music, different art-installation-style gardens and boutique shopping. While kids will enjoy exploring the different gardens, they will especially want to chill in the Children's Garden with its colorful playhouses, sandbox and kid-size Adirondack chairs. Visit Highwayman Wines, Meadowcroft Wines and Obsidian Wines to sample local vino, and pop into Prohibition Spirits Distillery to try other liquors that will quench your thirst. Be sure to check out the event calendar before you go, as the marketplace hosts many activities throughout the year such as its Snowman Festival in the winter, Mother's and Father's Day fun, and live music in the warmer months. 23570 Arnold Dr., Sonoma, 707-933-3010.

Nearby Attractions: Sonoma is next door to Santa Rosa, which was home to Peanuts creator Charles Schulz. Pop over to the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center ($12 for adults, $5 for kids 4–18 and free for those 3 and under) for a taste of all things Snoopy as well as the ice rink he used enjoy and coach hockey in: Snoopy's Home Ice. Bonus! Both are located next door to the Children's Museum of Sonoma County ($12 per person for kids and adults; free for infants under 12 months).

Larson Family Winery

Next, keep your eyes peeled for a practically hidden dirt road, where a wonderful family-owned winery welcomes you with a large grassy picnic area with bocce, board and lawn games -- plus the Larson family's three pet dogs that roam between picnic blankets. Current owners Tom and Becky Larson are parents who understand kids and welcome yours with open arms. Walking tours and tastings are available, or purchase wine by the bottle and sample the available food pairings for a perfect picnic. The winery features special events throughout the year, including in winter, when Santa comes for a visit with the kiddos. 23355 Millerick Rd., Sonoma, 707-938-3031.

Nearby Attractions: After your picnic fun, take the kids to Sonoma TrainTown Railroad, a 10-acre amusement park with -- you guessed it -- train rides. With pay-per-ride admission, you can check out the models and also ride a carousel. (The train ride is $7.50 per person for ages 12 months and older. Amusement rides are $3.75 per person each.)

napa winery tours family friendly

Benziger Family Winery

Leave Sonoma behind and take a winding road tour through the countryside to visit Benziger Family Winery, where kids are going to love the tram tour -- consider it a wine-tasting hayride experience! The 45-minute ride traverses the winery's hills and gardens with stops at wine caves. The rides are just $10 for those under 21 and are offered seven times per day, weather permitting. The entire estate is filled with gardens and makes for a perfect place for easy hikes and explorations, including of the the winery's farm and insectary. (The family believes insects are vital to the production of their wines.) 1883 London Ranch Rd., Glen Ellen, 888-490-2739.

Nearby Attractions: Glen Ellen was the home of "The Call of the Wild" author Jack London. If your kids have read the book in school, follow in his footsteps at Jack London State Historic Park ($10 vehicle entry fee), where you can take a guided horseback ride. You can also explore a museum dedicated to the author and visit his former cottage and the ruins of his dream house, which was destroyed by fire before he could live in it.

Valley of the Moon at Mardone Estate

Glen Ellen is also home to Madrone Estate, with 60 acres of vines that have been producing Italian-style wines for more than 150 years. Your family will explore historic buildings as you take a walking tour through the original barrel cellar and learn about the winemaking process at one of Sonoma Valley's first vineyards. When you are done touring, the kids can play on the patio or the bocce court while you sample the vineyard's spoils, including light snacks to pair with the estate's wines. 777 Madrone Rd, Glen Ellen, 707-939-4500.

Nearby Attractions: The perfect weather found in Napa and Sonoma counties isn't just ripe for growing grapes, it's also perfect for letting the kids take in nature with the freedom to run and play. Visit Glen Ellen's Quarryhill Botanical Garden, which has multiple gardens to explore ($12 for adults, $8 for kids 3–17; free for children 12 and younger).

Francis Ford Coppola Winery

You'll be hard-pressed to find a winery more kid-friendly than the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. (Yes, as in the director Francis Ford Coppola.) Begin your second day of winery tours (or your last stop of a one-day visit) by heading north to Geyserville. At the Coppola Winery, you'll find two swimming pools with cabanas to rent, which Coppola added specifically to give kids some fun. A lending library offers children's books to borrow, with a poolside teepee in which to devour them. The pools are only open from spring through fall, but if you choose to visit in the winter, kids can be entertained in the Movie Gallery, showcasing Coppola's films, or play bocce or table games. 300 Via Archimedes, Geyserville, 707-857-1471.

Nearby Attractions: If the kids (gasp!) grow tired of the fun at the winery, head south to SOAR Inflatables and Russian River Adventures and try your hand at river rafting.

Sterling Vineyards

From Geyserville, make your way to one of the most popular vineyards for all ages: Calistoga's Sterling Vineyards. Here, you'll ride an aerial tram to the top of the vineyard -- 300 feet above Napa Valley -- for inspiring views. Kids will love the ride on the only aerial tram in the area, and your self-guided tour includes motion-sensitive TV screens to guide you through the winemaking processes and facilities. Numerous tastings and pairings are available in different areas of the winery, with open-air balconies providing more views and ample space for kids to play as you sip. A tram ride and tasting is $35 for adults; young people ages 3 to 20 ride for $20 with a paying adult, and it's free for 3 and younger. 1111 Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga, 800-726-6136.

Nearby Attractions: Don't pass up a visit to the area without visiting the 400-acre Safari West for a true safari experience in an open-topped truck. You'll see giraffes, zebras, rhinos and more at this unique "zoo." (Prices vary by day of the week and season but start at $83 for adults 18–61, $80 for teens 13–17 and $45 for kids 4–12.)

Castello di Amorosa

Your next stop after Sterling should be the neighboring Castello di Amorosa, which earns its name for having an authentic castle sprouting up from the vineyard. Designed like a 13th-century structure, the castle spreads across 3 acres with 107 rooms -- no two of which are alike. Kids will be amazed by the castle complete with moat, drawbridge, multiple towers and ramparts, chapel, armory, stables and even a mock torture chamber. Self-guided tours provide visitors with maps of the winery, access to two levels of the castle and a wine tasting. Children receive grape juice during the adult tasting and are given crayons and coloring pages in the tasting room to keep them occupied while you imbibe. Guided tours include an hour of walking, so select the self-guided version if visiting with younger kids. Adult admission tickets with a wine tasting are $30; admission for children is $20 for ages 5 to 20, and free for those younger than 5. 4045 St. Helena Hwy. Calistoga, 707-967-6272.

Nearby Attractions: In an area surrounded by towering redwoods, see the trees that lived here more than 3 million years ago at the Petrified Forest. (Admission to the main trail/meadow walk is $12 for adults, $8 for "juniors" 12–17, $6 for kids 6–11 and free for those under 6.)

V. Sattui Winery

From Calistoga, continue south to the little town of St. Helena closest to the heart of Napa. Here, visit V. Sattui Winery, where generations ago an Italian family immigrated and began making wine in the traditional style. What makes this winery kid-friendly is its Artisan Deli and Marketplace, where you can purchase food and wine pairings and set up a cozy picnic with your family. You'll find sandwiches, panini, pasta, salad, dessert, fresh fruit and more than 200 types of cheese. The 2.5 acres of the estate are complete with gardens, an art museum filled with paintings by local artists, caves you can explore and underground wine cellars. You can enjoy a self-guided tour, and if you have older kids who can chill beneath the giant oak trees long enough for adults to sample wine, there are three tasting rooms available. 1111 White Lane, St. Helena, 707-963-7774.

Nearby Attractions: With most of your trip spent outdoors, turn to the Historic Bale Mill in St. Helena if it rains and you need some indoor activities. It's not much, but it's pretty cool to show the kids how an old mill works. (Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for kids 6–17 and children under 6 are free.)

  • BBQ on the weekends (big hit with our kids!)
  • Dozens of highly rated and award-winning wines sold on site.
  • Sprawling picnic grounds that include two dozen tables nestled beneath ancient Valley Oak trees and tri-level terraces that overlook beautifully manicured gardens and vineyards.
  • Kids can sample grape juice and enjoy BBQ on the weekends or grab food from the deli and cheese marketplace and enjoy it on the picnic grounds.  After enjoying some wine and a picnic, be sure to grab some gelato and continue touring the grounds of the winery.

Castello di Amorosa

  • Castello di Amorosa is a must see castle and a winery located near Calistoga.  Just the word castle is enough to have our kids jumping up for joy!  This winery not only allows children, but welcomes well-behaved and well-supervised kids and offers grape juice tasting in a friendly Knights Hall tasting room with a table for coloring.  Now how cool is that?

  • And to top it off, there are also farm animals and birds just outside the castle that kids will love checking out.
  • A fun fact: this castle took 14 years to build!!

Sterling Vineyards

  • Sterling Vineyards is a perfect wine tasting adventure with the kids.  One of the highlights that our kids still talk about is the one-of-its-kind gondola ride up the hill to the winery.

  • Once up to the top, the winery offers terraces where you can sip on a glass of wine (and grape juice for the kids) and enjoy great panoramic views of the valley.

  • One of the major perks with this winery that was a plus for us is it offers food and wine pairings that are kid friendly!   On our most recent visit, we did the Platinum Experience and were blown away by the food and wine pairings - it is the perfect splurge for a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary.  The kids got a snack and juice box, while we enjoyed the food and wine pairings; I’d call that a win-win for everyone.

Chateau Montelena

  • UPDATED March 2022 - Chateau Montelena is only open for tasting experiences by reservation.  To partake in any experience on the Estate, you must have a reservation or pickup confirmation, and all members of your party must be aged 21 years of age or older.
  • Chateau Montelena boasts one of the most peaceful settings in the Napa Valley, with a stone castle carved into a hillside overlooking a Chinese garden, lake and vineyards reaching out to the base of Mount Saint Helena.  It’s a great family-friendly experience with entry level tasting and gorgeous grounds for the whole family to explore.  The lake and gardens will be a big hit with kids and the variety of wine tasting experiences offers something for everyone.

  • Fun fact: The winery is famous for winning the white wine section of the historic "Judgment of Paris" wine competition back in 1976.  This wine competition helped put Napa Valley on the map and was famously portrayed in the 2008 movie Bottle Shock.

Beringer Vineyards

  • Beringer Vineyards is the oldest continuously operating winery in the Napa Valley and is listed under both the National Register of Historical Places and as a California Historical Landmark.

Boxcar Chicken

  • Although this gem of a place is located halfway between Napa and Sonoma, it’s definitely worth a visit.  Indulge in some of the best fried chicken and waffles you’ve ever had! This place was a huge hit with our kids with a large outdoor bench-style seating perfect for the whole family to enjoy.

  • Although this isn't an actual restaurant, but a small town located just outside of Napa (only about 10 minutes away from Napa!), it has several small bakeries and eateries that you can check out while walking through this quaint French inspired town.

  • Our favorite spot here that the kids love to grab some fresh pastries and chocolate milk is Bouchon Bakery.  And if you ever visit without the kids, there are world-class Michelin Star restaurants, including The French Laundry!

Family-Friendly Napa Valley Wineries: 10 Fun Places that Welcome Kids

Jill at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler

Are you visiting Napa Valley with kids and want to do a little tasting? Not sure where to go?

Check out my list of the top family-friendly Napa Valley wineries. These are places where your kids will not only be welcome, but will have something to occupy their time as you sample some of Napa's best wines.

Disclaimer : I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

1. Sterling Vineyards

One of the best family-friendly Napa Valley wineries is Sterling. The fun starts immediately with an aerial tramway ride to the top of the hill. This is the only way to get to the tasting room from the parking lot.

As you ascend, you will get amazing views around the valley. Kids love it as they get a bird's eye view of the valley below.

Aerial Tram at Sterling Vineyards

When you arrive at the top and check in for your tasting, your little ones will receive a coloring book. Sterling also offers great views, snacks, and juice for those under 21.

If your kids are old enough, they can also enjoy the self-guided tour. It shows the winemaking process and is a great way to learn about it.

2. Castello di Amorosa

Another one of the top family-friendly Napa Valley wineries is Castello di Amorosa. This authentic Tuscan castle design has 107 rooms and plenty of spaces to explore.

Your best option here is to take one of the guided castle tours, on which kids of all ages are welcome at the general admission price. Your entire family will get the chance to see secret rooms and interesting chambers.

At the end, you will also do a little wine tasting. In addition to the coloring book, kids will get a cup of grape juice so they can join in on the experience.

3. Frog's Leap

You will find this winery in the heart of Napa in the Rutherford District. They have an amazing selection of varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. I also love their whites, which include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc—perfect on a warm sunny day.

The reason Frog's Leap is one of my favorite family-friendly Napa Valley wineries is that they offer some fun things for kids on their farm, where the little ones can meet the chickens or watch the fish swim around in the pond.

They can also check out the lovely garden. This keeps them busy so you can do a little tasting during your visit. Family-friendly visits are available by reservation before noon.

4. V. Sattui

The perfect spot for lunch in St. Helena is V. Sattui Winery. They have wonderful outdoor area that includes a number of picnic tables, as well as an on-site deli and Saturday food truck.

V. Sattui Winery in Napa

Their artisanal deli features salads and sandwiches, paninis, and specialties like Dungeness crab cakes and lasagna. On Saturdays, the food truck serves up yummy BBQ ribs, truffle parmesan fries, and more.

Each selection on their menu shows you the best wine to pair with it, so you can enjoy a glass or bottle of wine with lunch. Both spots offer great desserts as well.

This stop gives the kids some time to play around outdoors as you finish your tasty V. Sattui treats.

5. Honig Vineyard and Winery

Another great place to take the kids is Honig Vineyard and Winery. They have a selection of fun things for your entire family.

They offer a tour of their vineyard on an open-air cart. Kids love this tour as they get to ride around in a cool cart while soaking in the amazing views around the valley.

Inside the winery, there are also games and toys for kids of all ages. In addition, they offer the kids snacks to keep them satisfied.

6. Dutch Henry Winery

Dutch Henry is another good lunch spot and a great option for older kids.

They have a great selection of red wines. I love their Syrah and Grenache wines. They also make Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel.

Unfortunately, a massive fire destroyed the tasting room in 2020, but fortunately, this family-owned operation is back up and welcoming visitors again.

The best part is they have a good outdoor area with bocce ball and picnic tables. You can grab some lunch on your way over and it enjoy it at one of the outdoor tables.

7. Alpha Omega Winery

Alpha Omega Winery is another one of the best family-friendly Napa Valley wineries. For younger kids, they offer coloring books and crayons upon arrival.

They also have a lovely outdoor area that is perfect for your family. You can taste their wines outdoors as the little ones get some fresh air.

Their selection of wines includes everything from Cabernet Sauvignon to a wonderful Late Harvest wine.

8. Beringer

The next stop for families is Beringer. They opened their doors in 1976 and is the longest continually operated winery in California.

Beringer Winery in Napa

There are a few things that will keep your kids busy here. They can explore some of the rooms inside this 17-room historic mansion. Outside, you will find a bocce ball court and picnic tables.

Kids are welcome to join the 30-minute cave tour as well. Overall this is a great stop for families.

9. Raymond Vineyards

Raymond Vineyards is ideal for visiting with kids because of its gorgeous grounds that are not only well kept, but also curated for the perfect outdoor learning experience.

While sipping your wine, you can take your family around to explore the Theater of Nature. First you'll enter through a white curtain that opens to the picturesque setting of the vineyard's organic and biodynamic farm.

There is a self-led tour through five acts that children of all ages will love as they discover the plants, sheep, chickens, and goats that contribute to the winery. Meanwhile you'll get the satisfaction of seeing how the delicious wines you're tasting came from sustainable viticulture.

Plus, the photo ops are incredible. Stop at the "hanging frame wall" and the big white chairs for some fun backdrops.

10. Inglenook

Inglenook is a historic property owned by Francis Ford Coppola. Construction began on their gorgeous chateau in 1881 with their first harvest in 1882. It stayed in the hands of the original owner, Gustave Ferdinand Niebaum, and his family until the 1960s. Coppola and his wife purchased it in 1975.

If you are traveling with kids, I recommend stopping here for lunch or a snack. They have a wonderful Bistro with outdoor dining. Their outdoor space features a reflecting pool and they allow the younger guests to borrow wooden sailboats to sail around the courtyard fountain.

Both you and the kids will a great experience here. You can sample some of their tasty wines at the Bistro, which is why it's one of my favorite family-friendly Napa Valley wineries.

While children are welcome, it's recommended you call ahead to let them know if you're traveling with children aged 12 or younger.

The Miller House

Napa valley's newest tasting destination.

Rising over the vast Member’s Lawn, behind Frank Family’s Craftsman House, a new structure overlooking surrounding vineyards and mountains has emerged, replacing the small fountain and grove of trees that had been a part of our property for many decades. After four years in the making, our new hospitality space, designed by famed American architect, Howard Backen, is finally a reality and open for business. The new space is practical as well as polished, dramatic as well as down-to-earth, featuring sustainably reclaimed wood, high ceilings, and natural earth tones that bring the outside in. Expertly designed with no detail spared, this gorgeous barn will forever be known as, “The Miller House,” in honor of the endless contributions of Leslie Frank, born Leslie Miller, whose vision was to build a unique and special entertaining area for our guests.

Part of the Family

Our friendly and knowledgeable hospitality team has made the Frank Family tasting room one of the premier destinations in Napa Valley. We are always happy to pour tastes of small-production bottles or a pre-released wine for an old or new friend (you'll instantly be one). Our tasting room is consistently recognized by top national publications, wine tasters, and aficionados across the board as one of the best in the country, and we like to think it's because we put our focus on you, wine, and fun. We want guests to feel like they’ve discovered something very special and very real, and being here is both. Because many of our wines are also tasting room-only, a visit to our estate includes exclusive offerings, set in a casual, welcoming, and relaxed atmosphere.

9 family friendly wineries in Napa Valley

Napa - famous welcome to napa sign

Looking for family friendly wineries in Napa? Want to visit Napa Valley’s legendary wine country, but not sure you should bring the kids? Won’t they get restless while you go on and on about something they won’t even be able to drink until they are adults? And what if they start pulling each other’s hair and in loud voices start asking you (and your fellow wine tasters) if it’s time to GO HOME yet?

Admittedly many opt to leave the kids at home, but if you are travelling from abroad you probably don’t have a grandparent handy to take the kids for the weekend. And why shouldn’t you bring the kids to this gorgeous and historic California county?

In 1976 Napa helped to catapult California wine to the world stage with the Tasting of Paris where a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and Stag’s Leap Cabernet beat their French cousins in a blind taste test. One  French judge was so horrified she tried to change her score when she found out the California wines had won. This was all good news for Napa and indeed all California wines, and in the nearly 40 years since, Napa wine and related industries have grown to add $50 million to the US economy each year.

While I want family holidays to be something we can all enjoy, for years our holidays have centred around the kids and what THEY want to do. This time I felt the kids were old enough to let mum and dad do something they enjoyed (I was going to write make them “suck it up” but thought that was too crude).

One of the keys to a successful trip to Napa involving children is to find a family friendly place to stay. You might want to avoid romantic / couples focused hotels. A resort with lots of amenities will give kids something to look forward to after a visit to a winery. For us, The Meritage Resort and Spa ticked all those boxes – with a family swimming pool/water play area, bocce ball and a 6-lane bowling alley!

But with nearly 400 wineries in Napa, which ones do you choose to visit? The next thing you must do is find one with a welcoming attitude towards families. Some wineries in Napa don’t even allow children! I know shock, horror. I emailed several wineries in my search, and it was very telling which wineries responded, and which didn’t!

In my family friendly winery search I found everything from winemaker owners (with families of their own) that welcome kids to a few properties that really go the extra mile to make families feel welcome and involve children in the whole experience. Which btw, is what all the marketing savvy wineries are about these days. Your positive memories of visiting the winery play a big part in if you purchase/recommend the brand again.

If you haven’t been wine tasting lately, you’ll be blown away by the experience options. It’s not just the old-fashioned roll up to the counter and try a few vintages before you buy. Now you can have everything from a “seated” tasting in a picturesque setting to a tour (wine in hand) to a cask tasting. Many wineries also pair food with their favourite wines. It’s all pretty amazing. Expect to pay between $15 to $40, depending on the experience. Some can be more.

With a family visit I suggest focusing your time on one or two wineries per day. Any more and the kids will kill you. My children usually behave if they know something fun is in store (such as swimming at the hotel, a train ride , or a cycle or kayak trip ). You could go one step further and make official bribes (Napa has a Michael’s craft store which my girls love). And if all else fails – most wineries have wifi the kids can log on to while you sip away.

Also it’s worth noting that many wineries require reservations – so make sure to check beforehand.

You can see my suggested itinerary for families visiting Napa Valley here .

A Modern Mother’s list of family friendly wineries in Napa

Ratings: Our family rated the wineries for family friendliness aspects on a scale of 1 star (least favourite) to 5 stars (loved it!).

We had the best time at Sterling Winery with the family! The slushies were a big hit with the kids (and we loved the wine). What a lovely day out

Sterling Vineyards   1111 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga, CA 94515 +1 (800) 726-6136   sterlingvineyards.com  Sterling goes the extra mile to make kids feel welcome and parents at ease. Take the gondola 300 feet above the valley to the gorgeous winery (with English connections, including being owned by Diagio). Adults get a glass of vino in a souvenir glass as soon as they get off and kids get a “tram pack” full of treats to keep them busy on the self-guided tour. There are 5 pouring stations with educational videos around the property and most have stunning views overlooking the valley. It’s a nice opportunity to try their quality wines (Wine Spectator recently awarded their Rutherford Cab a 92). During harvest you can do a “grape stomp” and personalise a T-shirt with your footprints. But the piece de resistance is frozen slushies for kids. Reservations needed.  Family rating:  5 stars *****

We just loved the stunning views, Greek architecture and the casual pace of the self-guided tour at Sterling Winery. The kids love the slushies and the tram ride to the top!

My 10-year-old’s perspective on Sterling Winery We went to Sterling Winery and it was actually VERY fun. In line there was a big board where you could fill in things you want to do before you die. I said I wanted to surf in Hawaii and own a dog. Then we got on the tram which was like go skiing but without having to lug around heavy skis. The tram ride was pretty and really fun, like a slow roller coaster. We got a voucher to get a box which had CHEESE-ITS, a colouring book (was actually fun I mean who doesn’t like colouring?) and a cool water bottle you could put around your neck. We also got $2 off a slushie. I would recommend getting the slushie because the time went REALLY quickly with it.

The girls did a blind DRY soda tasting at Frog's Leap Winery. They were given a flight of four samples and asked to identify the flavours. They learned a lot and it really included them in the experience! @frogsleapwinery gets my vote for one of the best family friendly wineries in Napa!

Frog’s Leap Winery  8815 Conn Creek Rd, Rutherford, CA 94573 +1 (707) 963-4704   frogsleap.com  Frog’s Leap owner and winemaker John Williams worked at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars helping to bottle the famous 73′ Cab before buying the former frog farm and starting his organic, dry farmed winery. While you enjoy a Signature Seated Tasting on the peaceful plantation deck overlooking the vineyards and gardens, the kids can get involved in the experience with a DRY soda tasting (organic sodas from Washington State). Younger kids get a custom colouring book and juice box. Then wander the grounds as a family and enjoy the gardens, chickens and pond. Reservations needed for seated experiences.  Family rating: 5 stars ***

My 10-year-old’s perspective on Frog’s Leap Winery We went to Frog’s Leap Winery and it was amazing. While my mum and dad tasted wine we tasted DRY soda (organic soda from Washington State). They gave us 4 sodas each to taste and we had to guess what flavours they were. They all tasted really good. We had lemon lime, cherry, lavender and juniper berry. They also have a friendly winery dog called Abie and lots of outdoor space and chickens!

Frog's Leap Winery has a wonderful garden for kids to explore with their parents. What is it about teens and handstands?

Castello di Amorosa   4045 St Helena Hwy, Calistoga, CA 94515 +1(707) 967-6272  castellodiamorosa.com  We didn’t visit as it sounded very gimmicky, but I chatted to several families that did and they said the kids loved it. It really is a castle (with imported stones from Italy). There’s a full-size fortress with a dungeon, moat and Great Hall. The animals are a big hit with the kids (sheep, emus and peacocks). The parents I spoke with didn’t rate the wine, but if the kids are happy who cares.  Family rating: 4 stars ***

My youngest engrossed in Little Women while my husband and I indulge in a Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Estate Collection Tasting. I kid you not.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars   5766 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558 +1 (707) 944-2020   cask23.com  The winery’s 1973 Cabernet beat French reds in the 1976 Paris Tasting (don’t confuse this with Stags Leap Winery which is down the road). They offer several experiences, including tasting elite estate wines. Kids can jump on the wifi or read/relax in a gorgeous outdoor patio that overlooks the vineyard while mum and dad sample the fine wines.  Family  rating: 4 stars ****

asting some amazing cabs at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, one of the Napa wineries that helped catapult California onto the world wine scene by beating French classics in the 1976 blind Paris Tasting. A fabulous story to go with an equally fab winery. Oh, and the kids are here too!

My 13-year-old’s perspective on Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is special because it won the red wine category in the Judgement of Paris, which my parents kept talking about. Whilst they tasted wine we enjoyed the panoramic views over the vineyards and read our books. At least that’s what we wanted mum and dad to think. We actually snuck onto the wifi!

In addition to wonderful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir #NicholsonRanch has fabulous grounds including a lake with fish! You can picnic there and kids can do as many handstands as they want. You may even see one of the 2 winery dogs.

Nicholson Ranch Winery   4200 Napa Rd, Sonoma, CA 95476 +1 (707) 938-8822  nicholsonranch.com  Technically Nicholson Ranch is not in Napa, but it is right on the border!  Their Tasting Room offers an assortment of meats, cheeses, crackers and spreads to go along with a bottle of your favourite wine. Take advantage of the picnic tables with shade umbrellas or spread a blanket out on the lawn. The lake has largemouth bass, catfish, and the occasional river otter. Blue Herons, White Egrets, and an assortment of ducks visit regularly. All this, and a glass of fine wine made by the owner who has teens of his own … it’s really hard to beat. They also have two winery dogs. Family  rating: 4 stars ****

amodernmotherWe got to sample the cheeses before we purchased them for our picnic on the grounds at @vsattui

V. Sattui Winery   111 White Ln, St Helena, CA 94574 +1 (707) 963-7774   vsattui.com  Great deli for family friendly picnics outside on the grassy grounds (good for cartwheels too), V. Sattui has everything you need for a wine country picnic! Family  rating: 3 stars ***

Hall Wines   401 St Helena Hwy, St Helena, CA 94574 +1 (707) 967-2626   Hallwine.com No reservations needed. I’ve included Hall Wines because their cabs are out-of-this-world good and they have a welcoming family friendly attitude. There’s loads of funky modern art to admire, including a massive 30-foot stainless steel Bunny Foo Foo, and inviting gardens to explore.  Family  rating: 3 stars ***

The back patio of the tasting room at Heitz Cellars. wifi.

Heitz Cellars  436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena, CA 94574 +1 (707) 963-3542   heitzcellar.com   It’s famous Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet (named after the couple, not the Massachusetts beach!) was one of the wines included in the famous 1976 Paris Tasting/Judgment of Paris – the blind tasting event that put California wines on the map. Welcoming family attitude and free Wifi! No reservations needed. Family  rating: 3 stars ***

Other suggested family friendly wineries we didn’t get a chance to visit:

A word on family winery etiquette

Nobody wants to hang out next to loud obnoxious kids – not even other families! This is a little reminder even though you are taking the kids to a family-friendly winery, don’t forget to respect those around you. Young children cannot roam unattended, many of the wineries are working farms/entities and it can be a safety issue. Encourage your kids to keep their voices down and use their manners. Everyone will appreciate it.

Have you visited any family friendly wineries in Napa that I should add to my list? Please leave any suggestions below and we’ll check them out!

Wow, this look amazing! What a thorough review. I love visiting wineries, my first time was back in 2005 in Australia ( Hunter Valley NSW). This summer i was celebrating my 40th in a winery in the Czech Republic, you should visit too! Amazing place! http://www.vinarstviukaplicky.cz/

Looks like you had a great holiday. The wineries look like fantastic family friendly places, I blindly considered them as places for adults only, that’s me schooled. I wonder if there are any local ones I could take the family to?

I love the way that the wineries cater for children – I wouldn’t have expected them to at all x

Blimey. I would never have thought to take my boys to something like this. But actually, I now reckon there’s mileage in this as an educational activity as well, around alcohol. Definitely given me food or should I say, wine, for thought!!! And I am not jealous of this experience. Not a bit. Promise.

So lovely to see that many wineries have made visits accessible by all the family

You did some serious research here, Susanna, before and during the visits. Brings back memories of going along with my parents to gin factories in Minorca – though I don’t remember such fabulous things for the kids to do while the parents got merry.

Great idea to find the child friendly places – I can imagine that there are a lot of couples focused wineries out there but you found the gems!

What an amazing holiday you had and so fabulous that the wineries have thought about the kids and how they can engage them too. I would never have considered a holiday like this but after reading – yes please! Mich x

Met the @visitcalifornia folks at @framelessldn today. Like the art at the venue, California is always changing. So exciting to talk with the different regions and learn about new hotels, restaurants, activities and more! Very excited to hear about the Bahia hotel renovation in Santa Cruz, sushi and wine in Yosemite and of course the new Michelin guide comes out on Monday. This time of year my thoughts turn to the Golden State and I start planning for the summer! An insider’s take by Napa Valley tour guides

people taking selfie in front of napa valley sign

There is no topping Napa Valley winery tours and wine tasting. Even though tasting rooms re-opened with fits and starts during the pandemic, the region’s passionate winemakers never took their focus off creating some of the world’s most exquisite wines.

Today, most of the over 500 wineries in Napa Valley welcome guests for winery tours, education and wine tasting. If you have just one day to tour the wine country from San Francisco, where are the best places to go in Napa Valley?

This post will leave the question of “best wine” to others. Instead, it focuses on the best “winery tours” in Napa Valley. Some Napa wineries feature over-the-top luxury, others beautifully cuofted gardens, and some intimate experiences with the winemaker at a family-owned winery.

What we will cover in this guide to the best winery tours in Napa:

Best View: Sterling Winery

Perched 300 feet above the town of Calistoga, Sterling Vineyards offers panoramic views of Napa Valley. An aerial tram carries visitors up the hill to the white stucco winery that stands out dramatically against the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges that flank Napa Valley.

While tasting Sterling’s award-winning wines, guests may roam beautiful outdoor terraces and elegant tasting rooms inspired by the sun-bleached island of Mykonos. Well-marked walkways and motion-sensitive DVD screens allow guests to take their time during a self-guided tour of Sterling Vineyards’ winemaking facilities.

While known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Sterling cultivates ten vastly different terroirs producing wines of great distinction.

Best Tasting Room: Artesa

The Spanish-inspired tasting salon and adjoining patio space at Artesa Winery overlooks the rolling hills

The Spanish-inspired tasting salon and adjoining patio space at Artesa Winery overlooks the rolling hills of Carneros and is easily one of the most beautiful places to enjoy a flight of wine. Designed by a renowned Spanish architect, the winery was built to blend seamlessly into a high hill of native grasses at the south of the estate.

Artesa’s tasting salon, awarded the 2018 Design Award from the American Institute of Architects , draws inspiration from the art, culture and nature of Barcelona. This Napa winery features sweeping views through floor to ceiling windows and courtyard reminiscent of the Mediterranean waterfront.

At the heart of the bright-white space is a dramatic circular bar covered with hand-made, imported tiles. Leather lounge chairs and tall white ‘tapas’ tables complete the atmosphere of relaxed luxury.

Both the Tasting Salon and Terrace feature Barcelona-inspired food and wine pairing experiences by appointment. Artesa Winery specializes in Pinots and Chardonnay along with a vintage estate sparkling and cabernet, tempranillo, and albariño.

Best Garden: Chateau Montelena

Japanese tea garden in golden gate park

The setting at Chateau Montelena winery is one of the most remarkable in the Napa Valley. It features an Instagram-worthy stone castle carved into a hillside above a garden, lake and vineyard that stretches to the base of Mount Saint Helena.

While they appear to be groomed, the gardens are mostly wild, growing where and how nature intended.  If you take the time to walk the path around the lake, you will be surrounded by plants native to the area, including redwoods, oak, madrone, and toyon.

The Calistoga AVA offers the perfect climate for fruit, so besides impressive vineyards, you will see mature orchards of mandarins, key limes, blood oranges, Buddha’s hand, Yuzu, and finger limes on the paths leading to the tasting room.

Jade Lake provides the perfect backdrop for this sanctuary which hosts many species of wildlife such as the mute swans and ducks along with the occasional visits of otters and beavers.

As pleasing as the gardens may be, they are not the highlight of this remarkable winey.  Chateau Montelena is the Napa Valley winery that famously won the white wine section of the historic “Judgment of Paris” wine competition in 1976.

The winery still features its remarkable chardonnays, but the vineyard’s diversified soil produces aromatic, rich and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons and Zinfandels.

Best Art and Adventure: Hess Persson Estates

bottle of wine standing on the table

The combination of ATV vineyard tours and impressive contemporary art collection may seem miss-matched, but all that and more is on offer at Hess Persson Estates.

Hess Persson offers a range of tour and tasting experiences at their 1,000+ acre vineyard perched on the slopes of Mount Veeder in Napa. Their ATV tours allow you to enjoy stunning views across the valley and feel one with the vines (without the effort). Conclude the excursion with a wine and cheese or food pairing.

If your interests lie in the Hess art collection, enjoy a self-guided tour free of charge (with reservation), or consider a combination tour complete with private tasting experience. Their walk-through tour with Director of Art Robert Ceballos enhances the art with stories of each artist and their relationships with curator Donald Hess.

This small group Napa Valley wine tour from San Francisco features seated tastings at 3 of Napa’s best-loved wineries, including the 13th century-style castle at Castello di Amorosa.

Best Tasting Porch: Ru Vango Winery

three girl posing in front od vineyards

This quintessential Carneros AVA property, once cultivated by the Michael Mondavi Family Estate, is surrounded by rolling hills of planted vineyards. In the evening, fog and breezes off nearby San Pablo Bay provide natural cooling.

What makes a visit delightful is Ru Vango’ s perfectly situated wrap-around porch that looks out over sun-soaked vineyards located in the southernmost grape-growing region in Napa Valley.

The winery is particularly known for its wines made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown at 2000 feet above sea level and in the direct pathway of cool breezes that create the ideal growing conditions for wines with complex character.

Best Family-Owned Winery: Hans Fahden Vineyard

grapes

Hans Fahden Vineyards is a family-owned winery, resting 1,000 feet above Napa’s valley floor in the heart of the Mayacama Mountains. A family-owned and operated for three generations, the Fahden Family has a limited production of 1,500 cases per year.

Three vineyard areas are separated by volcanic outcroppings and forests of Douglas Fir. The soil is pure volcanic tufa beneath a thin layer of topsoil that forces it Cabernet Sauvignon vines’ roots to compete for a scarce water supply.

The estate’s perfect location just 30 miles from cooling blankets of fog on the Pacific Coast gives the grapes time to rest at night, producing character and complexity for master winemaker, David Sunberg.

French-style gardens surround the tasting room and add a dash of color to the estage.  No matter the season, roses, irises, petunias, pansies, cornflowers, poppies, ornamental grasses or native shrubs are in bloom.

A generation ago, an amazing wine cave was tunneled into a formation of volcanic ash rock. Inside, the cave’s walls are lined with wine barrels; grape-leaf adorned fixtures; and the twinkle of tiny lights.

Best Lunch Spot: V. Sattui Winery

people tasting wine

V. Sattui Winery is a long-time favorite stop for lunch because of its old-world Italian charm, vast picnic grounds, personalized winery, barrel tastings, food pairings, legendary fresh food deli, and friendly staff.

Michelin-Star chef, Stefano Masanti ensures exceptional cuisine matches the glamorous and relaxing space. Culinary Director, Joe Schneider, combines award-winning wines with weekly tasting events. For any Napa tour from San Francisco, V. Sattui is a great spot to relax with a bottle of wine, while enjoying a family lunch on the picnic grounds.

V. Sattui features more than 60 different wines including sparkling and Port-styles and has recently added a Concierge Service designed to tailor group visits to guest preferences.

Best Vineyard Walk: Cuvaison

Cuvaison vineyards

For those wanting to stretch your legs and get up close and personal to the vines, consider visiting Cuvaison Winery. For over 50 years, this Los Carneros region winery has been introducing the world to exceptional cool-climate Napa Valley Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.

Currently offered on Monday mornings, their 2-hour hike and tasting experience immerses visitors in the 200-acre property. The guided hike concludes on the patio, with an estate tasting and boxed lunch from Carneros Resort and Spa.

Those not interested in hiking can still enjoy an elegant tasting in Cuvaison’s Tasting Salon. Tastings are available daily, by appointment only.

Best Medieval Castle: Castello di Amorosa

castello di amorosa

Castello di Amorosa knows how to make a first impression. The authentically styled, 13 th -century Tuscan castle winery was constructed using more than 200 containers of European materials and furnishings.

Begun in 1994, a humble building gradually morphed into a castle spanning 121,000 square feet with 107 rooms located in four underground and four above-ground levels. The building has all the elements you’d expect from an authentic Italian castle. A moat with a drawbridge, high stone walls, gargoyles, a church, and a fully equipped torture chamber will fascinate on the way to the vaulted wine tasting cellar.

Thankfully, Castello di Amorosa puts the same love and attention into its wines which are elegant, intensely flavored, and well-balanced. The castle winery produces hand-crafted Italian-styled wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Primitivo and Sangiovese.

Best Wine Cave: Stags Leap Cellars

tasting room

Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, this winery brought international acclaim to Napa Valley wines when their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon won the famous 1976 “Judgment of Paris” tasting. A bottle of the vintage was inducted into the Smithsonian National Museum in 1996 to highlight the impact that the achievement had on the U.S. wine industry.

The newly remodeled facility at Stags Leap  is a showcase for gorgeous vineyards and Napa countryside. At the center of the vaulted cave, swings an amazing floor-to-ceiling Foucault pendulum. According to Winiarski, the winery’s cave “is the moral center of the universe.”

The 90-minute Stags Leap tour and tasting experience (by appointment only) explores the history of the estate, its unique terroir, and its superlative wines. Small groups are treated to fascinating stories of one of California’s earliest wine estates as they stroll the property and finish with a seated tasting in the stately Manor House.

You can no longer taste the famous 1973 cabernet, but you can taste one of their newer vintages from vines that have been growing on the estate since the 1890s.

Best Budget-friendly: Rombauer Vineyards

bottle of Rombauer Vineyards wine standing on the table

This St. Helena vineyard is one of the last wineries in the valley that encourages you to bring your own food for a picnic. Reserve one of their outdoor tables, buy a glass or bottle of their well-known chardonnay and enjoy a budget-friendly meal.

If you are interested in a guided tasting here, those won’t break the bank either! Indoor and outdoor tastings for groups of 1-4 are only $25 per person. While they don’t offer much for snacks, the friendly staff, quality wine, and beautiful setting make for a great value tasting.

Best Wine Club: Beringer Vineyard

beringer vineyard

If you really enjoy the wines from a specific winery and the wines are hard to find, then I recommend

If you really enjoy the wines from a specific winery and the wines are hard to find, then I recommend signing up a wine club in Napa Valley. As a member, you will often be the first to receive new releases or limited production wines. Most memberships include free tastings in their tasting rooms and discounts when you buy more wines online.

Beringer V ineyards has an extremely celebrated wine club credited to its intricately adorned 17-room Rhine House mansion, constructed in 1884. Beringer Reserve Club members receive complimentary samples and tastings in exclusive areas of the mansion.

The Beringer Wine Club also features special invitations to classes, performances, recitals and other pop-up occasions like gourmet dinners and rare barrel-tasting sessions in cellars where wine producers work their magic.

While distinguished as the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley and a National Historic site, Beringer Estate is graced with 19th-century architecture and verdant gardens.

Beringer cultivates diverse and prized vineyards across appellations from the highest hills in Napa to the valley floor behind the historic winery.

Best Convenience: Ackerman Heritage House

glasses of wine on the table

If you are staying in downtown Napa, a stop at Ackerman Heritage House is a must. This stunning 1889 Victorian Estate is walking distance from most Napa hotels, but the convenience doesn’t make the experience.

Ackerman Family Vineyards provide elegant experiences at their Heritage House. You can find classic tastings here, but Ackerman pays almost as much attention to their food as their wines. From chef-led wine and lunch pairings, to cooking classes, to one of the best brunches in town, all of your senses are sure to be delighted.

Best Fairy Tale Estate: Domaine Carneros

domaine carneros entrance alley

Founded by the noble French family behind Champagne Taittinger, this majestically grand château delivers a splendid wine tour in Carneros Appellation of Napa Valley. The Domaine Carneros is located in the southern part of Napa Valley, near the cool climate of San Pablo Bay.

This stunning 18th-century French mansion is carved into a gorgeous Napa hillside. Below the winery are cellars, replete with exceptional sparkling wine. There are three terraces from which you can enjoy breathtaking views while sipping extraordinary sparkling and Pinot Noir wines.

Winery tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how sparkling wines are produced, from harvesting of the vineyards to the bottling process. The tour experience culminates with a sampling of wines paired with an array of artisan cheeses, gourmet caviar, smoked salmon, and charcuterie, while seated in the Louis XV–inspired salon.

Best Celebrity-Owned Winery: Inglenook Winery

inglenook winery entrance

One of the original Napa Valley wineries, the elegant, ivy-covered Inglenook was founded by Finnish sea

One of the original Napa Valley wineries, the elegant, ivy-covered Inglenook was founded by Finnish sea captain and wine connoisseur, Gustave Niebaum, in 1879. Gustave was passionate about making fine wines.

Hollywood legends were drawn to this Napa treasure in the 1930s and 40s, including Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, and Jean Harlow, to name just a few.

In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola acquired the notorious winery and spent considerable time, money, and energy restoring it to its original, magnificent splendor. He has since returned the abandoned name Inglenook to the estate, promoting it as a true crown jewel of Napa Valley.

Wine tours of the historic grounds, elaborate tasting rooms, antique cars and other features are by appointment only.

Best Family-friendly: Tres Sabores

sheep in the vineyard

Tres Sabores is a kid and dog-friendly vineyard aimed at bringing you back to the old Napa. This family-owned winery, opened in 1999, aims “to explore the ‘three savory flavors’ in every glass of wine: the taste of the vine, the terroir, and the good company around the table.”

Owner and winemaker Julie Johnson does just that by providing a relaxed yet intimate experience. Adults will delight in the organic wine and children will be fascinated by the local animals, curated activities, and maybe even a taste of something fresh from the garden. While they do offer food pairings, parents of picky kids shouldn’t despair, as they encourage groups to bring their own food too, as long as they drink what is available on property.

This unpretentious winery was recognized by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the top wineries in Napa Valley in 2023. Take a drive down the dirt road and see why for yourself.

Best Exclusive: Fantesca Estate and Winery

entrance to the Fantesca Estate and Winery

This hidden gem winery offers only private tours of their St. Helena estate to elevate your Napa Valley experience. The personalized tour of the grounds, complete with stunning Spring Mountain views, offers an impressive start to the experience.

Continue your journey into their winemaking process with a tour of their 300-foot mountainside cave, filled with fragrant french oak barrels. Learn about winemaker Heidi Barrett’s limited-availability wines during a tasting of select vintage and library wines at your private tasting desk overlooking the valley floor.

Not only does Fantesca produce fantastic wines, their estate is also home to olive trees and honey bees, which produce extra virgin olive oils and dark, rich Napa Valley honey. Explore all that Fantesca has to offer with an exclusive visit to this special property.

Best Exclusive: Hall Napa Valley

vineyards in front of hall napa valley winery

Hall Napa Valley wines perfectly illustrate the meaning of terroir. Carefully curating grapes from 13 of the 16 Napa Valley appellations makes for a portfolio of plush, dense, structured wines with refined tannins.

The tasting room of this Rutherford AVA has floor-to-ceiling glass to show off the remarkable views of the Sacrache vineyard where organically farmed, densely planted grapes result in some of the smoothest, most flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world.

Exquisite tasting dinners of seasonal cuisine prepared by celebrity chefs, are delightfully lit by a massive Donald Lipski chandelier in the shape of a grapevine root system set aglow with the sparkle of 1,500 Swarovski crystals.  The tasting caves are hand-built from bricks imported out of Vienna.

Watch Hall’s calendar for special wine and food pairing events and for when they will offering sips of the rarest single-vineyard bottles in the Appellation Exploration Experience.

napa winery tours family friendly

Group Tour.

There are more than a dozen established and respected tour operators offering wine tasting experiences. Taking one of these wine tours from San Francisco offers you the chance to sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.

The experiences are guided so you can learn about grape growing and winemaking as you travel to visit Napa Valley wineries. As a bonus, you’ll have the chance to socialize with other wine enthusiasts as you taste your way through the area.

Group tour operators usually include the wine tasting fees which they negotiate below the posted rates. They also take care of reservations which can be difficult to get during the peak summer and fall seasons. Here are several, we recommend:

Platypus Wine Tours’ “join-in” wine tours are a good option to experience Napa’s wineries while meeting new people along the way. During this approachable, sociable tour, you’ll visit four wineries and have a picnic lunch. Note: Platypus does not pick up at any hotels in San Francisco. They begin tours from Vallejo, CA, which you must reach by taking a ferry from Pier 1 in San Francisco. Phone: (707) 253-2723

Extranomical Tours’ Redwoods and Wine Country Tour is one of the most highly regarded wine tours from San Francisco based on TripAdvisor reviews . The day starts with a stroll under giant redwoods in Muir Woods and then a wine enthusiast guide takes you to both Napa and Sonoma Valleys for tastings and an optional gourmet lunch . Extranomical Tours also offers a Small Group Reserve Tour to Napa that visits three of the wineries on this “best” list.

Private Tours

woman tasting red wine

If you prefer to stick with your own group for a Napa Valley wine tasting from San Francisco and you have at least 6 people, you can easily arrange a reasonably priced private tour. A day tour to Napa from San Francisco will run $400 to $600 but you’ll need to add in the wine tasting fees (plan on an average $25 per person at each winery) and gratuity for the driver.

Private tours can be customized to wineries you want to visit, and you can decide whether you want the fare to include wine tasting fees or pay them as you go. The operator should also make reservations at the wineries (make sure of this!).

Extranomical San Francisco Tours (more shameless promotion!) also offers private, build-your-own wine tours to Napa Valley from San Francisco . To make the planning easy, an experienced travel consultant will help put your private tour together and handle reservations and all the special details needed to make your day in the wine country perfectly memorable. They do pickups from any Bay Area hotel to Napa and back. Phone: (415)-357-0700

Beau Wine Tours & Limo offers introductory tours perfect for Napa Valley newbies. The experience can be customized to your tastes and offers the chance to visit and tour at premier Napa wineries like Robert Mondavi Winery, Chateau Montelena, and Beringer Estate. A professional guide will provide insights into Napa’s grape varieties and terroir to help you gain a better understanding of this beloved wine region. Beau Wine Tours is based in Napa but will pick up qualifying groups in San Francisco for an extra fee. Phone: (707) 257-0887

DIY Of course, you can drive yourself on a tour of Napa Valley wineries. Don’t rent a car from the airport, wait until you get into San Francisco and rent your car just for the day you plan to head to up to Napa Valley (hotels can charge up to $70 per night for a garage space!). Make sure you check how late the rental car company is open, since some close early on certain nights of the week.

Be sure to set up tasting tour appointments in advance. Most wineries have open tasting hours, but many of the best experiences require advance reservations. You can simply call the wineries or look on their sites to see if appointments can be made online.

You can also use Uber/Lift as transportation, but they will not plan your route for the day. Without a good plan for going from winery to winery and lunch, you may spend most of your day inside a Prius instead of enjoying your day in Napa Valley.

Be sure to assign a designated driver!

You can also use Uber/Lift as transportation, but they will not plan your route for the day. Without a good plan for going from winery to winery and lunch you may spend most of your day inside a Prius instead of enjoying your day in Napa Valley.

Is this your first trip to the wine country? No problem, here are a few helpful hints to help you prepare.

  • Eat Before Tasting: Eat a good breakfast before you leave your hotel so you are ready for a full day of tasting.
  • Don’t Wear Perfume: Leave the scent of your perfume and lotions at your hotel. This allows your nose (and others’ noses!) to fully experience the beauty of each wine.
  • Search “how to taste wines”: Swirl, sniff, sip, and repeat to savor all of the aromas and flavors.
  • Ask Questions: Don’t be afraid to ask questions as the wineries LOVE talking about their wines.
  • Pace Yourself: Wine tasting is a slow process so you can remember every moment, flavor, and wine. Take your time as you taste and savor the experience.

Of course, this list only scratches the surface. Napa has dozens of other amazing wineries worth noting, such as Beaulieu, Cakebread, Ehlers, Far Niente, Robert Mondavi, Pine Ridge, Shafer, Darioush and Silver Oak, to name a few.

Napa Valley Vineyards And Family-Friendly Winery Tours

Article By: FTFstaff

napa winery tours family friendly

About an hour to the northeast of San Francisco, and comprised of the towns of Napa, Yountville, Oakville, St. Helena, Rutherford and Calistoga, the 30-mile-long Napa Valley is home to over 200 of California's wineries, yes, some of them kid-friendly. They're a great place to introduce kids to responsible drinking, but there's other fun family stuff to do in Napa , too.

Although visiting wineries is primarily an activity for moms, dads and grandparents, there are exceptions: Castello del Amorosso has family-friendly tours daily; Robert Young serves up petting animals with a hearty Chardonnay. The vineyards listed below are particularly kid-friendly and many children do enjoy some aspects of the tours, such as watching the bottling and labeling of the fancy grape juice. Take a look at these family-friendly wineries…

Kid-Friendly Napa Vineyards and Winery Tours

Robert Mondavi Winery 7801 St. Helena Highway (Calif. 29) Oakville, CA 94562 888/766-6328 Your family will learn a lot about grape growing, picking, crushing, fermenting and bottling on the 30-minute, guided Discovery Tour that includes viewing and discussion of the historic To Kalon Vineyard, state-of-the-art To Kalon Cellar, and barrel aging room. Robert Mondavi (at left, atop barrels) founded the vineyard back in 1966 and revolutionized the American wine industry. While mom and dad sample the vintages, there's plenty of room for kids to play on the large lawn adjacent to the tasting room. Weekends only, $15. Reservations for the tour (a day in advance) are suggested and seasonal concerts include a jazz festival and classical music performances.

V. Sattui Winery 1111 White Lane at St. Helena Highway St. Helena, CA 94574 707/963-7774 Tours of the underground cellars south of town are by appointment only, but free tastings for adults are available daily from 9am to 6pm in summer (to 5 pm in winter). This spot is known for its extensive cheese shop/deli stocked with Italian goodies, and gift shop full of attractive and amusing wine-related products. The outdoor, shady picnic area is a great place to stop for lunch or a snack.

Beringer Vineyards 2000 Main Street St. Helena, CA 94574 707/963-7115 A California National Landmark, the Rhine House is a fine example of German architecture and the home of the oldest operating winery in the Napa Valley. Beringer is located north of St. Helena and is open from 10am to 5pm, with eight family tours daily. Tour guides take visitors through the Old Stone Winery and wine-aging tunnels, highlighting Beringer's long history. It's a $25 charge only for those 21 years and over, who can taste two wines during the tour.

Sterling Vineyards 1111 Dunaweal Lane South of Calistoga 94515 707/942-3300 Good place for the family with kids of all ages. This winery offers something unusual – it is reached via an aerial tramway. During the exciting ride 300 feet up the mountain, you can enjoy an impressive view of the area's peaks, valleys and vineyards. The tasting room offers another fabulous view, and knowledgeable servers are happy to answer your questions about the wine-making process. The large lawn is a great place for kids to romp, but no stroller access means your little ones must be carried. There is also an extensive gift shop. General Admission is $25 for the aerial tram, self-guided tour, complimentary tasting of five wines and a souvenir wine glass. Guests under 21 pay $10, kids 3 and under enter free.

Work Off those Vino Calories with a Bike Tour

Napa Valley Bike Tours 6488 Washington Street Yountville, CA 94599 800/707-2453, 707/944-2953 With gentle rolling hills, temperate weather and lots of scenery, the Napa Valley is an ideal destination for a family bike tour. This local company can arrange everything from a one-day, guided tour for those with adult kids who bring their own gear, to a multi-day package with rental equipment, bike trailers for little ones, you name it. Special routes feature kid-welcoming wineries where, in lieu of counselors to play with, there are grounds to romp in while those over 21 sample the goods. NVBT recommends a stop at the local favorite, Mary's Pizza Shack, if your brood isn't up to a meal at Thomas Keller's famed French Laundry. They'll arrange babysitters, and steer families to other local attractions, including an indoor rock-climbing gym, the Jelly Belly Factory, Six Flags Marine World and Safari West. For an in-depth tour of the region, check out their five-night "Family Adventure Vacation" in which the itinerary, hotels, meals, bike rentals, sports equipment, etc. are provided, along with the staff's expert guidance.

Kid-Friendly Wineries In Napa (and Beyond)

Posted By: LesliPeterson

While some people visit California wineries for much-needed “grown-up” time in one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions, many parents prefer to travel and taste with their little ones in tow. This has increasingly become the trend, according to Wine Institute, inspiring many of the state’s wineries to offer special accommodations for kids, including grape juice tastings, play areas, visits with farm animals and outdoor games. These activities keep children happy and engaged while their parents sample the latest vintages.

The key to a successful and fun family outing in California’s wine country is to call ahead or check the producer’s website to see if kids are welcome. For reasons of liability or preference, some wineries do not allow guests under age 21.  If the winery does allow minors, kids are permitted to join their parents in the winery and can often take part in winery tours.

Following is a list of family-friendly wineries throughout Napa and California: ACORN Winery/Alegria Vineyards , Healdsburg, Sonoma County   Legos, crayons and cornhole keep kids entertained while parents taste. Children may also explore the vineyards adjacent to the tasting room, join parents on a guided vineyard walk and taste grapes during harvest. Alexander Valley Vineyards , Healdsburg, Sonoma County Kids can join in winery and cave tours with their parents, visit the vineyards and enjoy the winery’s picnic area. Alpha Omega , St. Helena, Napa Valley The winery offers the coloring book, “Exploring the Napa Valley with Traveler Teddies,” a kid-friendly guide to the Napa Valley, presented with a box of crayons.        Austin Hope & Treana Tasting Cellar , Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo County While parents enjoy a glass or a bottle outside overlooking the vineyards, children are invited to play cornhole or giant Jenga. Napa Valley Wine Country with Kids: The Complete Guide

By: Author Leslie Harvey

Posted on Published: May 7, 2023

Share this!:

Just about an hour north of San Francisco is one of the greatest wine regions in the world – California’s Napa Valley. Before we had kids, my husband and I enjoyed many a weekend getaway in the region from our home base in the East Bay.

While our trips may look a little different now, we still travel to the Napa Valley even with our kids! Surprisingly to many, Napa has a number of very family-friendly things to do and places to stay. There are wineries that welcome children, but there are also many activities that aren’t necessarily focused on wine that families can enjoy together.

The region has had an especially rough time the past few years. Both state-imposed closures as well as several rounds of devastating wildfires have taken a toll. As a result, we regularly visit when our family’s schedule allows to show our support for the area’s businesses and workers. And of course, Napa is a place we simply love to visit!

Welcome to Napa Valley California sign

We recently took another weekend getaway to Napa County with our kids. The trip was just the impetus I needed to finally gather all my Napa knowledge and travel experience together for other traveling families. If you’re considering a trip to Napa with kids, here’s everything you need to get started on vacation planning.

Napa Valley & Napa County Basics

If you and your traveling family are Napa newbies, let’s start with the basics. The Napa Valley is a wine-growing region of California just north of the San Francisco Bay Area. There is a city in the south part of this region called Napa, but a lot of travelers refer to the entirety of Napa County when they talk about “Napa.”

And then there is the Napa Valley which has a technical meaning to oenophiles – it’s an American Viticultural Area (AVA) that has a defined geographic location in part of Napa County. Yes, it can all be a bit confusing.

The main road through the valley is the St. Helena Highway, which is California State Route 29 (which later merges with 128). There is a parallel north-south route to the east in parts of the region called the Silverado Trail. On weekends, traffic can definitely back up along these thoroughfares, especially as you pass through towns along the way.

Napa is close enough to the San Francisco Bay Area that it’s doable as a day trip. ( Related : Best Day Trips Near San Francisco for Families ). But there’s enough to do that you probably want to spend a full weekend or more.

Towns in Napa Valley

Mustard blooms in Napa Valley California

A number of small towns dot the main drag through the valley. Generally speaking, the farther north you go, the more family-friendly the vibe and the more there will be attractions kids can enjoy too.

From south to north coming from San Francisco, towns to note include:

American Canyon

American Canyon is not far from the exit off of Interstate 80 right after leaving Vallejo in Solano County. It feels a lot more like the busy greater Bay Area than the rest of the county.

Next on the drive headed north is the city of Napa. Napa is by far the biggest city in the region. Here you can find a mix of hotels at various price points, as well as an enormous number of restaurants.

Father and son in Yountville California

Yountville is a much smaller town with an historic and walkable downtown. Higher end restaurants and shops make this a pricier place to stay, and one that usually caters to couples more than families. Thomas Keller’s famed French Laundry is located here.

Oakville & Rutherford

Between the bigger towns is a quieter stretch of road where a number of the heavy hitters of California wine are located. These include Cakebread Cellars, Opus One, and Grgich Hills. Oakville Grocery is a famous stop for local gourmet foods.

The next city up the road is small but still one of the bigger one for the county. St. Helena has a walkable downtown with plenty of shopping as well as several must-do restaurants. Its central location makes it a great jumping off point for travels all around the valley.

Wine barrels at Chateau Montelena in Calistoga, California.

At the far north west end of the county is the city of Calistoga. Calistoga sits atop volcanic activity that creates hot springs in the area. It was established as a spa town in the 1800s, and continues to be known for its many resorts with geothermally heated pools and mud baths.

Best Airports for Travel to Napa Valley

While so many visitors to the Napa Valley arrive by car from Northern California drive markets, Napa Valley draws tourists from all over the country and even the world who may need to fly instead.

If you are flying in for a Napa Valley vacation, there are a number of airport choices to consider. Before booking flights, consider what else you might want to do in the region.

The closest commercial airports to the Napa Valley are:

Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) : Sonoma County’s airport is the closest to the region. Travel time to Calistoga from STS is about 30 minutes, but it’s about an hour all the way to the city of Napa. Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Avelo all offer commercial service to several cities along the West Coast and in western states.

Oakland International Airport (OAK) : My home airport of Oakland is the closest major airport to most of Napa County. The drive from OAK to the city of Napa is about an hour (traffic permitting); it’s about 1.5 hours all the way to Calistoga. The major carrier at OAK is Southwest , with service from 10 other airlines.

Sacramento (SMF) : Also about a 1.5 hour drive to the heart of Napa Valley, Sacramento has a little less local traffic so may be preferable on certain dates and times over OAK. Southwest is also a big player in Sacramento. The airport also has plenty of service from the other majors like Delta, American, and United as well as some smaller airlines.

San Francisco (SFO) and several other airports in the region are all also reasonable choices too, depending on your overall travel plans. See my complete guide to San Francisco Bay Area airports for even more options and greater detail.

Napa vs. Sonoma: What’s the Difference?

The next county over to the west, Sonoma County, is also well known for wine. While it’s possible to do some of both Napa and Sonoma in a single weekend, I actually don’t recommend it for most travelers. Roads are winding and traffic can be significant. It’s better to stick to one area and dive deeply into its offerings.

Sonoma was historically the sleepier more rural region, with Napa making its mark on the international wine scene and getting noticed first. The differences aren’t quite as stark now, but they are differences nonetheless. You’ll find more of the big name commercial sites in Napa and more luxe hotels and dining on average there. Both areas still have a mix of smaller local winemakers too so you can still seek out whatever scene you want in each place.

Geographically, Napa County is smaller so it’s easier to explore in a single day or weekend. For families, I’d say both have pretty equally good offerings, so I highly recommend both with kids!

Things to Do in Napa Valley with Kids

So now that you have the lay of the land, let’s talk activities! Here are the top things to do in Napa Valley for families:

Safari West

Family at Safari West jeep tour in Santa Rosa California

While it’s technically in Sonoma County (and yes I just said not to do both in one weekend), Safari West is just barely over the county border. It’s a very short drive from Calistoga and simply a must-do for families on a vacation to either Napa or Sonoma.

Dubbed the Sonoma Serengeti, Safari West offers private jeep tours through a large 400 acre preserve filled with enclosures with zebras, giraffes, antelope, and more. With a focus on education and conservation, the professionally-managed and accredited preserve has grown into one of the most impressive collections of animals in the state.

Giraffe at Safari West jeep tour in Santa Rosa California

Safari West has very limited capacity on its tours, so booking early is essential. If you want to visit on a weekend, you might need to plan as early as 3-4 months in advance. For weekday visits, 1-2 months is more reasonable. Tours are pricey but well worth it for the professional and entertaining guides. Note that kids must be at least 4 to ride.

You can also stay overnight in one of Safari West’s glamping tents. My friend Kim of Stuffed Suitcase recently stayed the night there and has a complete Safari West review with more detail.

Sharpsteen Museum

Exterior of Sharpsteen Museum in Calistoga in Napa Valley, California

If you are a history buff or a Disney fan (my husband and I are both!), this little museum in the heart of downtown Calistoga packs a serious punch. The museum’s namesake, Ben Sharpsteen, was one of the early animators and producers for Walt Disney. The museum has unique memorabilia from his work that rivals some of the exhibits found at San Francisco’s Walt Disney Family Museum .

It also has detailed exhibits about the history and settling of Calistoga. Adjacent to the museum is one of the original cottages from the city’s founding by Samuel Brannan who established the Hot Springs Resort in the area back in the 1860s.

The Sharpsteen Museum is an inexpensive activity ($3 suggested donation) and has plenty of interesting offerings for adults and kids alike.

Old Faithful Geyser

Old Faithful Geyser in Calistoga California

All the volcanic activity around Calistoga created Napa Valley’s very own geyser. While it’s not as huge as the one it shares a name with in Yellowstone National Park , it is reliable, erupting about every 40-45 minutes.

We visited after a heavy rain, which suppresses the water’s eruption a bit. Nevertheless, we were still marveling at the sight of it. The geyser is now a full fledged roadside attraction, with prices to match, but it’s better than your average tourist trap. It has a petting zoo and picnic areas, so I recommend timing a visit with lunch to enjoy the outdoor space there (keep reading for my recommendation of where to pick up a picnic lunch in the area).

Petrified Forest

Family at Petrified Forest in Napa Valley California

Another roadside attraction worthy of an hour or two visit in the area is the Petrified Forest . This area was buried by a volcanic eruption of the now-extinct Mount St. Helena 3.4 million years ago. Now many of the buried ancient redwoods have been uncovered in their petrified but otherwise preserved form.

The main loop hike is a mile – easy and mostly flat except for one steeper descent at the very end. I recommend the optional extra hike to see the ash fall where you can also get a peek at the peak of Mount St. Helena.

Kids at Mount St Helena at Petrified Forest in Napa Valley, CA

Linda Falls

Thanks to a tip from a local who works with Visit Napa Valley, I learned about this semi-secret waterfall hike that turned out to be the highlight of our most recent trip. Linda Falls is located in Angwin, up in the hills above St. Helena, about 15-20 minutes off the highway. There is some unofficial parking along the road at the trailhead or you can park by the tennis courts just up the road if those are full.

Family on Linda Falls Hike in Napa Valley California

The hike is 1.3 miles roundtrip, with some elevation changes and a few switchbacks to get to the bottom of the falls. My kids, ages 7 and 12 at the time, had no problem doing it but I would say it would have been a little too much for grandma and grandpa if they had been with us. Even though the hike isn’t long, I’d recommend wearing good hiking boots so you can scramble on the rocks of the falls more securely. We had on tennis shoes and wished for more traction.

The falls at the end are just gorgeous and not frequented by too many people. Plan on 1-1.5 hours for this stop to have time to enjoy it at a leisurely pace (not including drive time).

Lake Berryessa

In northeast Napa County away from the winery scene of the valley is a popular getaway for outdoor recreation, Lake Berryessa. Given the distance, this is probably more of a day trip from the rest of Napa. And there are certainly a day’s worth of activities here for families, from swimming to fishing to paddle sports to camping.

Lake Berryessa has two marinas and three recreation areas. Boat rental is popular, so reserve ahead if you want to get out on the water.

Napa Valley Vine Trail

If your kids are old enough to explore on two wheels, an ideal way to explore parts of Napa Valley is by hopping on bikes. The Napa Valley Vine Trail is an ongoing ambitious effort to connect Vallejo to Calistoga with a continuous 47 mile biking and walking trail. For now at least, 12.5 miles of it have been completed, connecting Kennedy Park south of Napa to Yountville, with more under construction and coming soon.

A number of hotels in Napa loan bikes to guests or you can rent them in the area. Napa Valley Bike Tours has two shop locations on the trail so you can rent and cruise at your leisure or book a guided tour with them.

Kid-Friendly Wineries in Napa

Just because you are taking the whole family to Napa Valley doesn’t mean you necessarily have to skip the wine. There are a number of wineries that welcome kids and that have offerings to keep their interest for an hour or two while parents get to try some wine. (For even more wineries, including some that are better for adults-only groups, see my guide to wine-tasting in Calistoga ).

Castello di Amorosa (Calistoga)

Castello di Amorosa in Napa Valley California

This winery was designed to look like a Tuscan castle, so it’s visually engaging for all visitors to explore – even the ones too young to enjoy wine. The winery charges a fee for kids, but gives them grape juice and coloring pages to pass the time while their parents taste. Castello di Amorosa usually offers tastings and tours by reservation only.

Sterling Vineyards (Calistoga)

Perched high atop a hill in the middle of the valley is Sterling Vineyards . The centerpiece of the property is an aerial tram/gondola that whisks guests from the valley floor to the winery with a view. The property suffered damage in a wildfire in 2020 and is still rebuilding. Look for a fuller reopening targeted for spring/summer 2023.

Beringer Vineyards (St. Helena)

Beringer is one of the most well known wineries in the area and has been continuously operating for 144 years. Its main building is visually arresting and interesting to explore on tours.

Beringer traditionally offers a couple of family-friendly shorter tours or tastings with a reduced fee for kids (who often are given a glass of grape juice). Check the website for their current offerings and reserve ahead to ensure space.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery (Geyserville)

Just north of Napa County crossing into Sonoma County (yes I left the county again – sorry!) is Francis Ford Coppola’s winery . Built with families in mind, the property has a huge pool and a gallery with movie memorabilia. Reserve ahead (way ahead) for one of the coveted poolside cabines. There is plenty to eat and drink on property as well.

Where to Eat in Napa Valley with Kids

On every corner in the Napa Valley is a fantastic restaurant. But a few of the restaurants are probably better saved for date night or a couples getaway. If you have kids in tow with more limited palates but still want to enjoy the best of Napa cuisine, a few restaurants really do it right. My family certainly hasn’t even begun to try them all, but we can definitely recommend the following:

Pizzeria Tra Vigne (St. Helena)

Exterior of Pizzeria Tra Vigne in St Helena in Napa Valley California

My kids are still talking about our lunch at Pizzeria Tra Vigne and have asked that we consider a day trip another weekend just to eat a meal here again. This restaurant has truly delicious high quality Italian food. In fact, it’s a place my husband and I would return again without the kids. But Pizzeria Tra Vigne also strikes that rare restaurant balance in being ideal for kids too, offering many things kids enjoy without relegating them to a typical kids menu.

Kids enjoying pizza at Pizzeria Tra Vigne in St Helena in Napa Valley California

The toughest food critic in our family is our son who might just be the pickiest eater on the planet. He devoured two whole slices of pizza during our lunch at Pizzeria Tra Vigne, interrupted only by the low sounds of mmm, mmm, mmm.

Gott’s Roadside (St. Helena)

Kids eating ice cream at Gott's Roadside in St. Helena California

Just across the street from Pizzeria Tra Vigne is Gott’s Roadside . Gott’s is an old school diner using high quality California ingredients that was originally known Taylor’s Refresher. As you might imagine, the menu is full of kid-friendly greasy spoon favorites, from burgers to milkshakes.

The challenge of eating at Gott’s is its popularity. Lines to order can be extremely long on weekends and holidays. So pack your patience, and try to eat on the earlier or later side to avoid lengthy waits. There is plenty of spaced outdoor seating at large picnic tables so it’s perfect on a warm Napa day.

Sam’s General Store (Calistoga)

Brannan Cottage Inn and Sam's General Store Calistoga Californai

Sam’s General Store is a cute little cafe that shares space with the Brannan Cottage Inn. The store is an ideal breakfast spot where parents can grab a morning coffee and sit outside while the kids enjoy a pastry or breakfast sandwich. The store and inn are located in a historic cottage original to the town of Calistoga (another one still standing is over by the Sharpsteen Museum), presenting a great chance to learn a little local history over breakfast.

Sam’s offers a picnic basket service that is ideal for families who want to explore wine country during the day and eat wherever they find the perfect picnic spot. Simply select lunch items like sandwiches, salads, chips, and cookies for two or more people. Sam’s packs a custom basket that is ready to throw in a bike basket or in your trunk.

Sams General Store Picnic Baskets in Calistoga California

Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery (Calistoga)

Located in the heart of downtown Calistoga on the banks of the Napa River, the Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery has a large outdoor patio and beer garden perfect for people watching. The menu is varied and extensive, with steaks, seafood, pasta and more. Bonus points to the restaurant for publishing a kids menu prominently on their website as well. And of course, there’s a wide variety of beers on tap from the Napa Valley Brewing Company, ideal if you have a parent in your traveling party whose preferred beverage of choice is made with hops instead of grapes.

Sam’s Social Club (Calistoga)

Sam’s Social Club is a large restaurant on the property at Indian Springs Resort. Since we were staying at Indian Springs on our most recent trip, it was an easy stroll from our cottage to dinner one night. The restaurant has an enormous outdoor tent strung with twinkling lights to maximize outdoor space and still provide fine dining ambiance. The menu features farm to table regional favorites, and there’s plenty kids will like as well.

Bottega (Yountville)

Bottega Restaurant Menu in Napa Valley California

Bottega is probably the most expensive restaurant on this list, so it’s a great fit for families with older kids or who have kids who are a bit more adventurous with food. Founded by celebrity chef Michael Chiarello, the restaurant features high end Italian cuisine. We ate here with our kids and my parents on a recent day trip, and found lunch outdoors on a Sunday to work well for a multigenerational group. The food was a bit too bold for the super picky first grader, but a huge hit with my sixth grader.

Oxbow Public Market (Napa)

Last but certainly not least, Oxbow Public Market in Downtown Napa is a popular place to grab a quicker bite. This enormous marketplace is full of shops and restaurants, including an additional Gott’s Roadside location, Hog Island Oyster Co., Kara’s Cupcakes, and many more.

Where to Stay in Napa Valley with Kids

Hotels, vacation rentals, resorts, and motels abound in the Napa Valley. Choosing between all the options can be pretty overwhelming, especially when you look at prices on weekends during peak season!

Our family approaches lodging in the region from two different angles. Sometimes, we want to stay in a moderately priced utilitarian accommodation that puts us close to all the things that we want to do. Sometimes, we want to make the property itself a core part of what we want to do. In that case, we seek out lodging with history and unique amenities and prepare ourselves for a splurge!

While there are far too many properties to highlight in this post, I did want to recommend two family-friendly Napa properties that fit this latter approach that are especially unique for family travelers:

Indian Springs Resort (Calistoga)

Bocce courts at Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga California

Located on the site of Samuel Brannan’s original Hot Springs Resort, Indian Springs Resort is old world luxury at its best. My husband and I stayed here years ago for our 10th anniversary, but brought the kids this time because of how well the property works for families too. The property was transformed by a huge renovation and expansion in that time.

The highlight of the resort is an enormous geothermal swimming pool heated by the adjacent hot springs. It looks like something out of a Wes Anderson film. The spa is unique, offering weird but wonderful mud baths in the volcanic mud. Families can also enjoy bocce and giant outdoor chess together. The resort has free bikes to borrow (including one that was the perfect fit my son at age 7) to get around between the cottages on the property or visit downtown Calistoga.

Swimming pool and clock at Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga California

There are a variety of rooms and cottages to choose from at different prices and layouts. We found the Palm Row bunk cottage to fit our family perfectly with two separate bedrooms – one with a bunk bed for the kids to share.

Silverado Resort & Spa (Napa)

The Silverado Resort has been a favorite getaway for Bay Area locals for decades. With two golf courses, tennis courts, pools, and a spa on property, there is a lot for everyone to do to stay busy. We last stayed there as part of a corporate retreat where families were invited and have been meaning to get back ever since!

A lot of the rooms by the mansion in the center of the property sleep only two, but there are larger family suites at the Oak Creek area that work well for families.

Additional Tips for Visiting Napa with Kids

Ready to head to Napa for a wine country family getaway? Let me leave you with a few parting tips to make your vacation successful.

  • Skip the stroller : Visiting with a baby or toddler? Flat paved sidewalks and pathways are few and far between, except on the main business districts of a few towns. Bring a baby carrier instead of a stroller to be more nimble in touring, especially if you plan to visit wineries.
  • Reserve early : There is much more demand that there is supply for just about everything in Napa Valley – hotel space, restaurant tables, etc. The earlier you can book to secure space at all, the better. While there are rarely big deals or discounts to be had, you have a better chance of locking in reasonable rates if you book early.
  • Plan for fire season : Fires in many places in California are a regular part of life in the summer and fall fire season. Tourism to the region can be shut down entirely if an especially bad fire hits. Always check local conditions and be flexible if fires force you to change your plans. ( Related : Tips for Travel During Wildfire Season )

Disclosure : While all of our travels in Napa Valley have been at our own expense, my coverage of this region calls for a special disclosure for a unique reason! My husband (who is an attorney) is proud to count a number of Napa businesses as clients, including several highlighted in this post. My decision to include these businesses in this post is unrelated to his representation of them and is solely based on what we found we liked and worked well for us as family travelers.

Napa Valley With Kids? The Best Family-Friendly Hotels, Restaurants, and Things to Do in Wine Country

After numerous visits to napa valley with her kids, one bay area writer is convinced that the region is as much for families as it is for foodies and wine lovers..

  • Copy Link copied

I have a confession to make, and I can already hear an audible gasp from my Northern California friends and neighbors: I’m not all that into wine. I absolutely can and do appreciate excellent wine, craft beer, and cocktails (when I do drink, I want it to be good after all), but I am no fanatic. What I do love more than anything is traveling and making memories with my family, which includes my husband and two young kids, ages four and six, and one of the places we love to do that in is Napa Valley.

Despite the fact that neither my husband nor I are hardcore oenophiles, we have found ourselves repeatedly exploring Napa Valley over the years from our home in nearby Concord, a mere 40 minutes from the southern reaches of Napa Valley. That’s because the region has so much to offer beyond fine wine. For one, it’s absolutely gorgeous—the rolling hills accentuated by oak trees and scenic rows of vines never get old. Secondly, we love amazing food, of which there is no shortage in Napa Valley. Third, there is so much to do, including biking, nature-filled hikes, farms and gardens to visit, and kid-friendly wineries, too. And lastly, a growing number of family-friendly hotels and resorts have transformed the region into a relaxing and welcoming getaway for visitors of all ages.

In the end, any excellent wine we end up sampling is icing on the cake for us.

Best places to stay with kids in Napa Valley

When heading to Napa Valley with kids, where you stay can become an integral part of the experience. I’m partial to two areas in Napa Valley when I’m with the kiddos: Carneros at the very southern end of the region, and Calistoga at the far northern tip. Both are more laid-back and offer access to top-notch family-friendly resorts.

The waiting area and bar at the recently opened restaurant Fleetwood at Calistoga Motor Lodge

The recently opened restaurant Fleetwood at Calistoga Motor Lodge has made the campy outpost a true destination hotel for families.

Calistoga Motor Lodge

Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa, a revamped midcentury motel, has the advantage of being both hip and more reasonably priced compared to some of the more luxurious resort properties in the region. Book into a camper suite that has a separate room with a camper van–style dining table that transforms into a bed or into one of the newer Vista double queen rooms with a balcony. Kids will love this playful property with its fun road-tripper theme that features three geothermal mineral pools, games like bocce ball, Hula-Hoops, and cornhole (plus an assortment of board games in the rooms and at reception), and complimentary bikes for guests.

Carneros Resort and Spa

With its spacious collection of 100 freestanding cottages set among the resort’s 28 acres that provide plenty of room to spread out, Carneros Resort and Spa at the southern end of Napa Valley is ideal for families. There’s also a family pool (plus an adults-only pool); kid-approved dining like Boon Fly Café, housed in a big red barn and serving a kids’ menu with regulars like silver-dollar pancakes, cheese pizza, and chicken tenders; and bikes available for guests to borrow.

In 2022, the property unveiled a fun Camp Carneros program for younger guests that offers a “backyard campout” experience complete with a kid-sized tent, sleeping bag, lanterns, faux campfire, and a s’mores kit that families can have set up in the backyard (for an added fee of $75). There is also a portable video projector available on request for setting up a movie night under the stars in the backyard. The property offers daily scavenger hunts, tours of the produce garden, and kids’ yoga, among other family activities . Little ones will also delight in such features as the oversized chess board in the property’s central lawn area and the “Chick-Inn,” a chicken coop where kids can visit the resident birds. Families who would like even more space can book a sprawling two-bedroom residence, complete with a full kitchen and dining room.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley

It took Four Seasons until fall 2021 to finally be able to boast a property in Napa. The result is this sophisticated 85-room resort in Calistoga with Four Seasons’ trademark elevated service and family-friendly offerings, including the complimentary Kids for All Seasons program for children age 5–12. (Kids for All Seasons is Four Seasons’ version of a kids club, a fully-staffed facility with games and activities the kids can enjoy while parents go winetasting or take a break at the spa.)

Accommodations range from standard guest rooms to two- to four-bedroom residential villas, perfect for multigenerational gatherings and reunions. Parents can bring their kids to the family-friendly pool, and those seeking greater serenity can head to the adults-only pool and Spa Talisa for the wellness that Calistoga (and its natural hot springs) is known for. Campo Poolside offers casual Mexican fare alongside the family-friendly pool, while the property’s signature Truss Restaurant + Bar (for elevated classics such as bucatini, burgers, ribs, and grilled pizza, served alongside elaborate cocktails and a mile-long wine list, too) and the newly opened fine dining restaurant Auro (for a tasting menu from a Top Chef alum) offer a perfect opportunity for a parents’ date night (babysitting services are available). Or opt for in-room dining on your private patio with views of the vines—the Four Seasons is located on a working vineyard. Families can also play bocce ball and borrow bikes for tooling around town.

Meadowood Napa Valley

For families looking for a quiet and serene outpost in the heart of wine country, look no further than Meadowood Napa Valley, a gorgeous resort tucked into the hills and shaded oak trees of this St. Helena enclave. There’s a family-friendly swimming pool, tennis courts available to players of all ages, and three miles of hiking trails that meander around the hilly and wooded property. The in-room dining menu features options like mac ‘n’ cheese and burgers for kids. Of the 36 guest rooms and suites, families may want to check into a larger “Treeline Suite” with separate sitting room and flexible sleeping options. With its ample shade, Meadowood is a great option for the height of summer and early fall (July through September) when temperatures can soar into the triple digits in Napa Valley.

Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection

After a $30 million redesign that was completed in 2021, Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection in Calistoga now offers accommodations that are perfect for families: brand-new one- and two-bedroom cottage-style suites with private patios. The effortlessly chic resort also features a new family pool area, and other kid-friendly activities such as lawn games, bocce ball courts, a splash pad, and s’mores on Friday and Saturday nights. In addition, families can book a personalized pizza making experience.

Kid-friendly restaurants in Napa Valley

Exterior of Boon Fly Café, a restaurant in a big red barn-style building in Napa

The entire family can indulge in Southern comfort food at Boon Fly Café.

Boon Fly Café

Whether you’re stopping in for the daily brunch (make sure to get the doughnuts) or are grabbing some dinner, Boon Fly Café’s Southern-influenced menu features something both adults and kids will love—and being housed in a red barn adds to the charm. Boon Fly resides on the Carneros Resort and Spa property, and you can take the kids to its central lawn area to get their wiggles out, play some giant chess, and check out the produce garden and chickens.

Café Sarafornia

If you’re up in Calistoga, head to this throwback diner-style restaurant on the city’s main drag (Lincoln Avenue) that serves up every kind of breakfast item you could possibly imagine. There’s a kids’ menu for breakfast and lunch ( Café Sarafornia isn’t open for dinner) that includes pancakes, eggs, grilled cheese, and chicken fingers, and adults can indulge in bulging breakfast burritos, benedicts, and French toast.

Two pizzas at Fleetwood

At Fleetwood, parents can enjoy sophisticated craft cocktails and grilled entrées and picky eaters can nosh on pizzas alfresco.

Courtesty of Fleetwood

What’s great about Fleetwood , Calistoga Motor Lodge’s new-ish on-site restaurant (it opened in 2021), is that families can nab a table outside and the kids can roam the grounds of this laid-back hotel, with fun distractions like lawn games and lush landscaping, while waiting for their pizza, pasta, and other wood-fired mains (including burgers, salmon, chicken, and steak). When the weather is nice, this is an ideal place for a relaxed and delicious dinner atop garden tables set among the trees, market lights, and firepits.

Gott’s Roadside

Our family should own stock at Gott’s we go there so often. It’s the ideal better-than-fast-food option with a kids’ menu that features burgers, hot dogs, and chicken tenders (along with what we have declared is the world’s absolute best ranch dressing), and enough added variety for the adults so that you don’t feel like all you ever eat any more are burgers and pizza. There are Ahi tuna and Baja fish tacos, specials that include crab, lobster, and Cuban sandwiches, and our go-to, the Vietnamese chicken salad. End the meal with some soft serve and shakes. There are two outposts in Napa Valley, one adjacent to Oxbow Public Market in Napa, and one in St. Helena.

Oxbow Public Market

We start, and often also end, almost every single visit to Napa Valley with a pit stop at Napa’s Oxbow Public Market , where there is literally something for everyone. If you’re just starting your day, grab a perfectly made cappuccino or cold brew at S.F.-based Ritual, and fuel up with a breakfast sandwich (with house-made English muffins) at neighboring Model Bakery, breakfast tacos at C Casa, or bagels and lox at Loveski. Bribe the kids with Kara’s Cupakes and a book or fun activity set from Napa Bookmine that they can read and play with for the rest of your time in Napa Valley. For lunch or dinner, options include sushi at Eiko’s, Hog Island Oysters, and Live Fire Pizza. Grab a growler of craft beer from Fieldwork and some amazing meat from butcher Fatted Calf to throw on the grill if you’re staying at a vacation rental.

Pizza Tra Vigne

When you want something certain to be a win, head to Pizza Tra Vigne in St. Helena, which features a full menu of pizzas, pasta, paninis, antipasti, and salads as well as a kids’ menu with eight-inch pies and spaghetti and ravioli. There’s also a happy hour menu from 4 to 6 p.m. daily (aka the time many of us eat dinner with our kids anyway). You can dine in or order takeout.

The key is to first make sure that kids are allowed (many wineries require that visitors are 21 years of age or older), and check that the experience is not too formal (if it’s a reservation-required sit-down affair, it’s not going to end well). As long as it’s more casual and there are places and spaces for the kids to explore, like pretty gardens and expansive lawns, it can be a win-win for all. Here are some examples of wineries that actually embrace the younger members of the fam.

Cakebread Cellars (Rutherford): At Cakebread , you can book a “Family Tasting,” which offers adults the chance to sample four wines during “a communal walkaround experience.” You have to reserve the family tastings, which cost $45 per adult and are offered daily at 10 a.m. There are gardens and lawns to run around in, and the winery is also home to a falcon that is employed to ward of birds that feed on the crops.

Castello di Amorosa (Calistoga): First off, it’s a castle, so you can play it up even before you arrive. “Guys! We’re going to a castle! The kind where princesses and knights live!” At Castello di Amorosa , kids can do a grape juice tasting (for $25) and the family can explore all the unique rooms and spaces such as the Great Hall, knight’s chamber, the moat, drawbridge, and the torture chamber (with an iron maiden torture device). Added bonus: There are goats, emus, peacocks, pigs, and sheep to visit .

Oasis by Hoopes (Napa): Make a family-friendly reservation at Oasis by Hoopes and you’ll have 90 minutes to spend enjoying the property’s organic gardens and nonprofit animal sanctuary, complete with lovable rescue animals such as goats, pigs, chickens, and turkeys. Kids must be included in the reservation and the charge for minors age 2 to 20 is $20 each. There’s an Airstream to check out as well as shaded seating where you can enjoy a cheese plate or goods from the on-site farmers’ market.

V. Sattui Winery (St. Helena): One great way to keep kids busy and entertained at a winery? Food, which is why the on-site deli at V. Sattui Winery is key. This sprawling 2.5-acre winery offers plenty of space to run around and to have a picnic (available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily) with the sandwiches, salads, or cheese bought from the deli (outside food is not permitted). On Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a food truck churns out barbecue, personal pizzas, sandwiches, salads, truffle Parmesan fries, and freshly baked cookies and cannoli. After sipping some wine (for the adults) and grabbing some grub (for everyone), families can meander among the estate gardens and underground wine cellars.

Kid-friendly things to do in Napa

Trail in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park lined with trees and brush

If you want to cruise around between wineries or are just looking to burn some youngster energy, one of the best and most fun ways to get around Napa is by bike. If you’re staying at a hotel or resort that loans out bikes to guests, ask for recommendations on where to go based on interests and abilities. The mostly flat Napa Valley Vine Trail is a fine path to hit—when completed it will span a full 47 miles between Vallejo and Calistoga; currently the 12.5 miles from Kennedy Park in Napa to Yountville are available for use. If you’re looking for a more curated outing, perhaps to a few family-friendly wineries, book a biking tour with outfitter Getaway Adventures , which welcomes all ages on many of its tours. The guides pick the venues in advance so all you need to do is hop onto your provided wheels, follow your guide, soak in the views, and sip and savor.

In Napa Valley, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park and Robert Louis Stevenson State Park offer plenty of hiking trails ranging from easy nature walks to more strenuous climbs such as to the summit of Mount St. Helena at 4,300 feet in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. Another option is Skyline Wilderness Park with 25 miles of trails and gardens that showcase native flora.

Horseback riding

Another fun experience for families in Napa Valley is horseback riding, and one great option for getting on horses is at Owen Ranch just north of the valley. The ranch offers everything from classes parents can do with their young toddlers to trail riding and rodeo lessons, as well as week-long summer camps for families vacationing in the region a little longer.

Old Faithful Geyser

This is kind of a cheesy stop in Calistoga (yes, with the same name as the much more famous geyser in Yellowstone National Park), but it’s a legitimate geyser and is pretty good entertainment for kids (OK, maybe for adults, too). There’s a dedicated parking lot, and after paying the entrance fee, visitors walk along a path to the geyser and can visit some farm animals and entertain themselves with an interesting variety of curiosities (Hula-Hoops, anyone?) the facility has laid out for guests to pass the time while waiting for the once-every-20-minutes-or-so show.

Playground Fantastico

True to its name, this playground in the city of Napa is fantastic if you’re looking for a place to just let the kids run around, climb, dig in the sand, play chase, and climb some more. It’s good for a really wide range of ages, from toddlers to teens. Even if we’re heading further north in Napa, we’ll often stop here on the way to let kids be kids.

Sonoma TrainTown Railroad

As per its name, Sonoma TrainTown Railroad is in neighboring Sonoma not Napa Valley, but I would be remiss in not mentioning it as it’s a mere 20 minutes from the city of Napa and it’s such an appealing option for families traveling with small kids in the region. We stop here frequently whether we’re visiting Napa Valley or Sonoma. The main draw is a train ride to a little farm where passengers disembark to feed the animals, and you can also purchase tickets to other kiddie amusements like a flying airplane ride and carousel.

Family-Friendly Napa Valley

June 27, 2018.

The Napa Valley may be best known for its world-class wineries and restaurants, yet it is also a welcoming destination for families. Year-round mild temperatures and more than 70,000 acres of protected land allow visitors of all ages to fully enjoy the outdoors, while hands-on adventures, full-service hotels, and family-friendly restaurants result in itineraries that appeal to all.

The Great Outdoors

From the Napa River to Lake Berryessa , Napa County is home to several large bodies of water, and all the associated fun, water-related sports. Rent a kayak or paddleboard at Napa Valley Paddle or Getaway Adventures , and spend the day afloat. Or, catch some fish with Wombat Charter Tours . For  an altitude adjustment, hike in one of Napa Valley's many protected outdoor areas such as Alston Park, Newell Open Space Preserve, Skyline Wilderness Park, The Napa River Bay Trail , or Bothe Napa Valley State Park. The valley is also full of great biking trails. The Napa Valley Vine Trail , which currently provides a 12-mile trail between Napa and Yountville, will eventually link 47 continuous miles along the valley floor. Bicycle rentals are available at Napa Valley Bike Tours, St. Helena Cyclery , and the Calistoga Bike Shop . For younger kids, there are playgrounds at Napa Fuller Park, Yountville Park, and St. Helena Crane Park.

Bothe State Park offers both day-use and overnight camping, picnicking, swimming (weekends during the Summer), and hiking trails through stands of coastal redwoods as well as forests of Douglas-fir, Tanoak, and Madrone. The large picnic grounds are located in the day use area, and are available for group events and getaways. A visit to the working Bale Grist Mill is like stepping back into 19th-century Napa Valley, and visitors can even buy flour milled on site. Skyline Wilderness Park in the southeastern hills offers both disc golf and archery. The Carolyn Parr Nature Center is dedicated to helping people of all ages learn more about local native plants and animals, including a collection of raptors, a mountain lion, and some non-native animals. In addition, hikes are offered in the nearby Westwood Hills Park. The Land Trust of Napa County offers hikes on several of its protected preserves on most weekends. These hikes are free but often fill up quickly so advance registration is recommended.

Activities & Attractions

For one of the newest and “greenest” ways to see the Napa Valley, Laces and Limos offers tours in their eco-friendly tuk-tuks, a modern day version of a rickshaw, with kid-friendly itineraries as well as pricing. A family favorite is Calistoga's Old Faithful Geyser , one of the world's three such named geysers, which erupts a spout of 350-degree water every half hour. While waiting for the eruption, families may visit the petting zoo's Tennessee Fainting Goats, four-horned sheep, and llamas. Just up the road is the Petrified Forest , with giant redwood trees that were turned into stone following a massive volcanic explosion that took place more than three million years ago. Or, give the kids a wine-country memory they will never forget and reserve a hot-air balloon ride in the wee morning hours with Napa Valley Aloft or Balloons Above the Valley that provide breathtaking views of the valley at sunrise. Napa Valley Aloft launches from V Marketplace in Yountville and accommodates children as young as six years old. Balloons Above the Valley features a package that includes brunch in the Napa's Oxbow Public Market, another family favorite.

Foodies on Foot is a family and pet-friendly walking tour of downtown Napa restaurants. Tours feature easy to eat items such as pizza and ice cream from local vendors, and kids under six are free, while kids between 6-12 are half price. The restored antique Pullman-style Napa Valley Wine Train departs from downtown Napa and runs through St. Helena. The seasonal open-air car is especially popular with families and the chefs are able to adapt dishes for younger tastes, including a barbeque meal or plate of simple pasta.

Wineries with “Kid-Appeal”

Many Napa Valley wineries cater to families to ensure that both adults and children have a memorable and enjoyable experience. Jamieson Ranch Vineyards offers Mini Moments , a one-of-a-kind, family-friendly experience offering guests the opportunity to interact with their three miniature horses; Whinnie the Pooh, Sweet Jane and Molly. Sterling Vineyards is reached by a gondola rising 300 feet to a mountaintop winery designed to resemble a contemporary Greek fortress. Once off the tram, kids receive a “tram pack” of goodies to keep them busy. The self-guided tour allows guests to walk around the grounds rather than standing in a tasting room, and frozen slushies are offered to children. Honig Vineyard & Winery offers toys and puzzles to play with, juice boxes and goldfish to snack on, and sidewalk chalk for kids to create artwork on the patio while their parents enjoy a tasting.

Materra Cunat Family Vineyards is not only child friendly, but also welcomes four-legged fur babies on a leash. Frog's Leap Winery , which is also a working farm, complete with vegetable gardens and fruit orchards, also features a large pond for frog catching and goldfish spotting. Or, take a tour in a 4x4 vehicle at Long Meadow Ranch's mountain vineyards. Its tasting room in downtown St. Helena has a petanque court and large lawns for working off excess energy. Castello di Amorosa is a meticulous reproduction of a 13 th -century Tuscan castle that will fascinate all ages with its dungeon, moat, suits of armor, and courtyard. Outside, there are emus, peacocks, and sheep to entertain even the most tired toddler, child, or teen. Dutch Henry Winery features picnic tables and a bocce ball court where families can rest and relax after a tasting. And at Chateau Montelena , families can explore the castle-like winery with its lake, Japanese gardens, and koi fish. Here is a link to other family friendly wineries.

Menus that Cater to Kids

Oxbow Public Market in Napa is an upscale food court that appeases every palate or craving. Gott's Roadside , both in Napa and St. Helena, provides American classics such as burgers, fries, and shakes, and wines by the glass or bottle for adults. Pizza requests may be fulfilled at Pizzeria Tra Vigne and Azzuro Pizzeria and Enoteca . The town of Yountville offers seasonal picnic items from Addendum, which offers cuisine from 3-Star Michelin Chef Thomas Keller spring through autumn in a relaxed, family-friendly environment. In St. Helena, The Charter Oak Restaurant offers a special kids' menu, homemade play-dough, high chairs, communal dining, and a dessert cart with popsicles. Archetype, also in St. Helena, features signature dishes such as wood-fired cheese pizza and sugar maple donut holes. Calistoga has Checkers and Café Sarafornia , both offering kid-friendly menus.

East meets west with Asian-inspired offerings including Two Birds/One Stone, where dishes such as fried chicken, forbidden rice and savory Japanese pancakes appeal to both young and old, and Napa Noodles features a fun Keiki (kids) menu, coloring books, and four big screens including one dedicated to kids' movies. Fans of global cuisine will enjoy Heritage Eats , a fast-casual eatery offering meals for kids and adults at an approachable price point, including kids' quesadillas, PB&J's and grilled cheese, as well as tacos, wraps, pitas and more. For sports fans, Norman Rose Tavern in downtown Napa offers elevated pub fare, a kid-friendly menu, and TV's for watching live sports. For sampling the best of Napa Valley's fresh produce offerings, visit one of the many Farmer's Markets April through November.

Arts and Culture

di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art presents contemporary exhibitions and educational programs for all ages, with complimentary admission for all visitors 17 and under. Families may visit the center's multiple galleries, the outdoor sculpture park, and 35-acre lake, all located on 217 scenic acres in Napa Valley's famed Carneros region. Every second and fourth Friday, they feature a “Short Stories” program for kids ages 2 – 5. The Napa Valley Museum in Yountville offers a range of family friendly activities including “Free Family Fun Activity” day on the second Saturday of every month. The Yountville Art Walk and Napa Art Walk are similar to outdoor treasure hunts for art and are perfect activities for kids of all ages. For those visiting the Napa Valley in April, be sure to review Napa Valley's Arts in April program. Experiences include the annual La Strada dell' Arte Street Art Festival where students and professionals create chalk art right on the street.

Summer Family Fun

Summertime is especially fun for families visiting the Napa Valley, offering professional baseball, free music concerts and even outdoor movies. The Napa Silverados baseball club is enjoying its inaugural season as the newest member of the six-team Pacific League of Independent Baseball clubs, the only remaining independent league on the West Coast. Forty home games will be played each summer (June through August) at the Napa College Baseball complex. With extremely reasonable ticket prices and food and beverage options, it's a great way for families to enjoy America's favorite pastime.

Several free summer concerts are held up and down the Valley. The town of Calistoga offers Concerts in the Park, a series of free summer concerts, on Thursday evenings 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Pioneer Park. The City of St. Helena also presents its annual Summer Concerts, a series of free, family-friendly concerts in Lyman Park 6 to 8 p.m. every other Thursday evening through the summer. The Town of Yountville presents Music in the Park at Veterans Memorial Park 5 to 7 p.m. on Sundays during the summer. The City of Napa features two opportunities to enjoy free music during the summer. Napa City Nights takes place at Veterans Park on Main Street each Friday evening at 6:30 to 10 p.m., and monthly at the Third Thursday at 5 concerts at The Oxbow Commons.

Film fans may also enjoy their favorite movies at the Yountville Hot Summer Movie Nights in the Park . This summer film series runs one Friday each month from June through September and features family rated films, snacks and dinner from a food truck that varies each month. Low back lawn chairs, blankets, warm clothes, and a flashlight for after the movie, are recommended. Food trucks and concessions start at 6:30 p.m. and movies will begin at dusk. Please leave pets at home.

Hands-On Fun

From cooking schools to working farms, families can have fun together and take home a new skill or a new appreciation for the land. If there is a budding chef in the family, book a tour at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone (CIA) in St. Helena to visit the vegetable gardens and learn about cooking techniques and healthy eating. At the CIA's Napa outpost, The Culinary Institute of America at Copia , every Sunday is “Family Funday,” where the entire family can take part in hour-long cooking demonstrations followed by samplings of that day's topic. Silverado Cooking School offers two classes that appeal to families with teens in tow (minimum age 12), the Farm Class where the class starts on an actual working farm, and the Napa Farmer's Market Lunch Class, where the chef leads guests on a culinary journey to seek out the perfect ingredients. After exploring the market, guests head to the school's kitchen to transform their selected ingredients into a three-course lunch that they prepare and enjoy together.

Connolly Ranch is a nonprofit educational 12-acre farm in the heart of Napa featuring three barns, a duck pond, greenhouse, hiking trail, natural playground and 86 animals including donkeys, pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, rabbits and more. Enjoy life on the farm through programs such as Farm Fridays, Second Saturdays and Walk-in Wednesdays. For a more personalized experience, schedule a Farm Day Vacation, featuring farm-related activities complete with a gourmet picnic lunch paired with Napa Valley wines.

Family-Friendly Lodging

The bustling social scene at Solage Calistoga means a fun stay for all age groups. There are two pools, one for families and a separate Olympic-size pool for adults, both surrounded by towering palms. Kids can play bocce ball or borrow the complimentary beach cruisers to bike into town.

Each of the multi-room lodges at Calistoga Ranch provides a full kitchen and a central outdoor family space. Complimentary bicycles are provided to guests for easy access to downtown Calistoga. Catch a glimpse of the resort's Baby Doll sheep that work as natural “lawnmowers” on the property.

The mineral pools of Calistoga Spa Hot Springs have been a mainstay of Napa Valley visitors for generations. Geothermal forces elevate the temperature of the mineral water to 180 degrees Fahrenheit at the source. In addition to the resort's three core pools, Calistoga Spa Hot Springs features a wading pool and water feature for younger guests.

Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga depicts a family vacation circa 1930, with a range of accommodations that includes rooms, bungalows, cottages, and houses. A big attraction for kids is the Olympic-sized mineral pool, one of the largest pools in California, which is kept at 82–102 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the season. The resort also offers complimentary bikes to ride around the property or into town.

Meadowood Napa Valley is the perfect home base for an active family. The 250-acre resort includes tennis courts, golf fairways, croquet lawns, hiking trails, and spacious cottages. During the summer, its Children's Sports Camps are open to children ages 6 to 11 and offer instruction in tennis, golf and croquet.

Silverado Resort and Spa offers one and two bedroom suites with full kitchens, as well as an eight-week Golf, Tennis, Swim Camp (GTS) open to ages 6-12. Kids will learn the fundamentals in each sport, and, after camp, can jump in the pool for supervised swimming in resort's main pool.

Embassy Suites Napa Valley features both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a children's menu, bicycle rentals and the Embassy Suites weekly supervised swan and duck feeding.

The Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa offers a collection of cottages with plenty of space for families, along with a family pool (as well as an adults-only pool), which includes toys and snacks. On Saturdays, June through September, parents can have a night out while kids enjoy dinner, games, and a kid-friendly movie. Carneros Kids' Night also includes a game room complete with ping pong, foosball, shuffleboard and an array of board games.

The Meritage Resort and Spa features the Crush Lounge, offering six lanes of bowling, sports entertainment and dining all in one area. Lanes may also be reserved for special celebrations, including birthdays.

Vista Collina Resort offers families a home-away-from-home with 39 suites, each offering spacious living rooms, dining areas and full kitchens, ideal for family dinners. In partnership with Hestan Cue, Vista Collina Resort offers guests an in-suite culinary experience where families can select farm-fresh ingredients from The Market and learn to cook gourmet kid-friendly meals.

Other family-friendly non-resort properties, each which feature swimming pools for a relaxing splash at the end of the day, include Holiday Inn Express & Suites and the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Spa Napa Valley in American Canyon; Westin Verasa , the Hilton Garden Inn , and Hampton Inn and Suites , each in Napa; the El Bonita Motel in St. Helena; and the Best Western Plus Stevenson Manor in Calistoga.
