Intern Abroad FAQs

Where will i intern.

While some organizations have a list of open internships and place applicants in those positions, we work in the opposite direction. We first learn about you, your interests, goals and experience, and then actively pursue the internship that provides you with experience directly relevant to your future career.

What will I be doing at my internship?

Our internships are customized to fit each individual’s goals, interests, and skill level. We consider all of these things and then make a placement accordingly. Therefore, we don’t have specific internships “set aside” waiting for people to fill them. We have placed interns in both small and large companies, but due to confidentiality of our host companies and organizations we are not able to provide a list of companies.

If I am accepted into the program, am I guaranteed an internship?

We are confident in our ability to find impactful,  skill-building internships. If you are accepted into our program, we guarantee that we will find you a placement in your first or second choice field.

Do I need to have experience?

We arrange rewarding internship placements for people with all levels of experience. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an expert in your field, a successful experience requires a positive approach and a mind open to learning, growing and strengthening your skills.

Are the internships paid?

We really wish we could offer paid internships, but all of the internships we coordinate are unpaid placements. Paid internships abroad are few and far-between, as they require a different type of visa that is difficult to attain, and they also require sponsorship by the host company, which is quite costly for them. The goal of our program is to provide meaningful, hands-on experience in your specific profession or field of study that will give you a competitive edge in the job market and make you valuable to employers who are globally minded. If you are seeking a placement to help you gain international experience, improve your skills in your field and enhance your resume, our program provides the perfect opportunity.

What companies do you work with?

Is there a cost to particiate.

We strive to provide immersive, life changing, and professionally rewarding programs for our interns. Our programs are designed as a comprehensive “program” instead of just the internship so that we can provide a full experience for our participants. The program fees we charge include the in-country expenses (housing, insurance, orientation, etc.) and also the dedicated work that goes behind finding a customized, one-of-a-kind, international internship placement.

You might find yourself interning in establishments built by world-renowned chefs, learning the inner-workings of a boutique B&B, or taking notes from the greats while interning in a classic Irish pub.

The typical working week throughout your internship will consist of 35 to 40 hours. Depending on the needs of the organization they may vary. You will likely be working outside of the typical 9-5 schedule, including evening events or weekend activities.

Potential daily tasks might include checking guests in and out, hosting and organizing events, putting the “breakfast” in “bed and breakfast,” or coordinating other daily operational tasks or admin work.

A Guide to Tourism Internships Abroad

An international internship in tourism is an essential part of a well-rounded understanding of the hospitality industry. With global travel on the rise, a tourism internship abroad will give you an understanding of how to cater to international clientele. You will also get a glimpse into the operations and customs of a hotel or resort in another country, which can expand your own ideas of the hospitality industry. Tourism internships will help interns build skills in communication, flexibility, adaptability, and self-confidence, and learn about hotel management, tourism, marketing, reception, event planning, tours, or conference management.

Why Intern Abroad in Tourism

By interning abroad in tourism you will be able to develop a real-world understanding of the theory and ideas you have learned about in the classroom. As you’ll soon find out, working abroad in a hotel or resort is a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, with new guests and new events each day.

Through communicating with and getting to know the other hospitality professionals and guests, you will gain insight into the culture and dynamic of the workplace. You’ll get an idea of the hard and soft skills needed to succeed in a career in tourism or hotel management, such as organization, attention to detail, patience, time management, and cross-cultural understanding. In addition, you will get to be a part of a working team of other people who lead and support the tourism industry.

If you are interested in practicing your language skills, consider a tourism internship abroad in a non-English speaking country. You’ll most likely still meet many guests and other workers who are English-speakers, since it’s so important in the tourism industry to have a working knowledge of English, however you will also learn specific hospitality-related vocabulary that you won’t pick up in the classroom. The new vocab you learn abroad could come in handy if you work abroad or even back in the U.S. with foreign travelers.

Whether you’re interning abroad in another language or not, by interning abroad you’ll gain practical work experience that will set you apart from other tourism job applicants and give yourself a boost over the competition. If you are hoping to work for a hotel or resort with international locations, your tourism internships abroad will be an excellent start to your career.

There are many choices for international internships in tourism. Below are a few favorites, but these are by no means the only locations around the world to intern in tourism!

New Zealand is an incredible choice for tourism internships abroad, specifically if you are interested in working with adventure tours or sustainable tourism. New Zealand is one of the most popular destinations in the world for all things outdoors, including bungee jumping, skydiving, kayaking, trekking, and camping, and also offers a wide variety of hospitality internship opportunities. Compared to clientele in other areas of the world, you may find that interning in tourism in New Zealand is a bit more focused on being active and exploring.

Chile is a smart choice for an internship abroad in tourism if you want to work on your Spanish language skills as well as work in a country that is a relatively new when it comes to popularity as a tourist destination. Recently, Chile’s tourism board launched massive campaigns to recruit travelers and businesses to come to Chile. You should be prepared to hear a different type of Spanish than you’re probably used to from the classroom or other locations in Latin America if interning in Chile, as Chileans speak very quickly and with a lot of slang! In addition to the bustling city of Santiago and the charming Valparaiso , Chile also offers more of an outdoor tourism focus in the Northern desert and Southern Patagonia regions.

Spain is a natural choice for tourism internships abroad because of its popularity as a vacation destination for people from Europe and the rest of the world. If you are looking to practice your Spanish language skills or work in some of the most bustling cities for tourism, interning in Spain is an excellent choice. Both Barcelona and Madrid are home to world-class hospitality and frequently host large tourism events, giving you the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes. If you are interested in working in a smaller city or town, the southern part of Spain is filled with smaller cities that are well-visited by people on holiday.

If you’re still looking for a few more ideas for international internships in the tourism industry, consider Australia , Thailand , Mexico , South Africa , or Italy .

The ideal tourism intern is energetic, hardworking, independent, and has strong interpersonal skills. You should have an interest in customer service and a desire to learn about local activities and events. Previous experience or courses in the hospitality field are a plus but generally not a requirement for tourism internships abroad. Even if you are interested in interning abroad in a country that does not speak English, there are usually many internships in an English-speaking role, especially in the field of tourism.

Many different types of companies provide tourism internships abroad, including multinational hotels, tour guide and planning groups, specialized tour organizations, hostels, and tourism boards. Specific tasks could be working on bookings , guest relations , administration , reception , leading tours , translating , marketing , creating guides , and running social media .

Most International tourism internships last between 25 and 35 hours per week. Depending on your exact international internship, you may be working outside of a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule, including evening events or weekend activities. In general you can find excellent placements in hospitality abroad at any time of the year, however depending on your country of interest it may be good to keep in mind the main tourist seasons. You may also want to research if there are any festivals or holidays that are of interest, since oftentimes tourism organizations will coordinate internships around these celebrations or events.

GoAbroad Insider Tips

Give Tourism a Test Drive. An internship abroad in tourism is valuable because it gives you a chance to experience working full-time in the hospitality and tourism industry. You will learn the day-to-day tasks and roles, as well as be able to get a better idea of what you want to focus on in your career. You may learn that you love coordinating and booking tours, but actually leading them is not for you. Alternatively, you might discover a love of working for a small bed and breakfast, even though you thought you wanted to work for a multinational hotel chain.

Learn Global Contexts. Your international internship in tourism will give you a better understanding of cross-cultural communication and let you see how tourism operates in another country. If you choose to intern abroad somewhere that allows you to develop skills in an additional language, this will further set you apart in your career. Regardless of where you intern abroad in tourism, you will learn how to work under pressure, be a part of a team, and think on your feet. A global perspective is increasingly important for those working in tourism abroad, and a tourism internship abroad is an important first step.

Without being on the ground and learning the realities of working in tourism, you will only be able to understand this industry through classes or books. Besides the training and skills development, interning abroad in tourism gives you a boost on your resume and in future job application.

  • Industry sector: The hospitality and tourism industry covers various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, event planning, tourism boards, and more. Consider which sector aligns best with your interests and career aspirations.

Consider which company size and type best suit your learning style and career goals.

Testimonials

Iris Nisanyan

Internship in Human Resources at the Four Seasons Bosphorus, Turkey

«The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the internship at the Four Seasons hotel is support! My supervisors and managers have been extremely supportive. Every assignment was explained very well and they always gave me a lot of confidence and the knowledge that I would achieve it.»

Eranjith Gamage

Internship in Sales and Marketing at Pullman Dubai Creek City Center in Dubai UAE

« For an intern, the Pullman Hotel is a good learning environment and everyone is willing to teach you your role in the organization. If you show a willingness to learn, you will also be rewarded with more tasks and responsibilities that will be assigned to you. »

Nicholas Gnaegi

Internship in Finance at Conservatorium Hotel, Amsterdam

« The whole process of getting used to the internship took about a week, and after two or three weeks I was quite satisfied with what I had to do. The support from the hotel was fantastic; the teams I work with directly are patient, understanding and a lot of fun. »

Federica Sandrini

Internship as Housekeeping Supervisor at Baur au Lac Zurich, Switzerland

« During my internship at the Hotel Baur au Lac I had the opportunity to meet many students from hotel management schools from all over the world. Not only is there a strong presence of interns in the hotel, but I can see how some of these interns decide to come back to the Hotel Baur au Lac after their internship in order to further their professional development, as I myself decided to do. »

Pasindu Vithanage

Culinary internship at the Hotel Mont Cervin Palace Zermatt, Switzerland

« This is not a place for a person who is too comfortable to work and just wants to enjoy. If the restaurant owner is busy, there is no time to lounge around. Everything must be done perfectly and on time. So I would recommend this place to students who are willing to get to know new and different cultures as a kitchen intern. This is the perfect place to gain some valuable experiences for their future career and life. »

USA Launches New Hospitality and Tourism Concentrations

The University of South Alabama Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management in the College of Education and Professional Studies is launching two new concentrations, global leadership and events marketing and management, under its bachelor’s degree program.

For those who seek to shape the future of a vibrant and evolving industry, South’s hospitality and tourism concentrations will start in the fall semester of 2024.

“With the new concentrations in global leadership and events marketing and management, our program in Hospitality and Tourism Management is uniquely positioned to provide students with the knowledge and skills that hospitality and tourism employers demand,” said Dr. Angela Barlow, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. “This will, in turn, lead to successful careers for our students in the fast-growing areas of leisure and hospitality. Whether a student desires to be the operations manager for a cruise line or an event planner for a resort, this program will help them grow as professionals through meaningful experiences provided by our community and industry partners.”

The servant leadership being modeled to South students will help them stand out in an industry that will produce future leaders through innovative business-education partnerships.

“The new concentrations in global leadership and events marketing and management were developed through a robust planning process and were not arbitrary,” said Dr. Khal Nusair, chair of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism and Management. “Over the duration of a three-step planning method, we analyzed hospitality and tourism programs at the state and national levels, sought the feedback of our advisory board and gathered data from industry partners and alumni.”

In the global leadership concentration, students build problem-solving, communication, critical thinking and analytical skills to excel in the global hospitality and tourism industry.

“It’s important to note these specialized programs will strengthen our existing industry ties and develop new partnership opportunities with stakeholders from the hospitality and tourism industry,” Nusair said. “Thanks to hospitality and tourism industry partners’ guidance and support during the program restructuring efforts, the program has been positively transformed. This couldn’t have been accomplished without their dedication and commitment to our success.”

According to President and CEO of Visit Mobile David Clark, who also serves as president of South’s Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Board Executive Committee, the new concentrations will open doors to many career opportunities.

“USA continues to raise the bar with its education and career offerings to help students earn the right to lead,” Clark said. “Adding global leadership and events marketing and management will significantly enhance students’ ability to make a huge impact on their career path and advancement.”
