MacQueen’s Bike Shop & Island Tours

PEI Self-Guided Supported Cycle Tours

MacQueen’s, based in Charlottetown, is PEI’s longest-running and largest bicycle specialty shop. MacQueen’s Island Tours’ self-guided supported PEI bicycle tours offer unparalleled flexibility for almost all levels of cyclist. There are no guides, groups, locked riding itinerary or pre-set dates. Stop, eat and cycle when and where you wish. Our team of local resident cyclists takes care of booking professional equipment, tried & true accommodations, expert route planning with a curated list of some of our favorite local spots for dining and activities, transferring your luggage between inns and offering emergency road repair service for our rental equipment should a problem arise (we’re never further than an hour away). Our local team takes care of the details so you just enjoy the ride. Travel at your pace with confidence in MacQueen’s insider knowledge of Prince Edward Island.

Trips begin in Charlottetown with professional outfitting, a short city tour and accommodations in the historic district of Charlottetown. Cycle to the Island’s quiet eastern coast. Choose from stops in Point Prim, Murray River, the riverside town of Montague or the former shipbuilding hub of Georgetown. From there you have a choice of cycling to Souris and the “singing sands” of Basin Head, to St Peters and the unique protected sand dunes of our PEI National Park at Greenwich, or heading west to the PEI National Park and Dalvay before returning to Charlottetown. Or, if you prefer, visit both Souris and St Peters or Goose River and savor the unique flavors of more destinations. Return to Charlottetown via one of our favorite sections of the Confederation Trail, encountering quaint fishing villages, lighthouses, farmland, beaches, serenity, and friendly, down-to-earth locals that are the true pride of Prince Edward Island. Depending on which areas you visit, you might incorporate stops at local wineries, distilleries, craft breweries , a learning experience at our famous Culinary Institute, seasonal U-picks , the freshest local products , dairy bars, food trucks, seafood shacks, clam digs/bakes, river cruises, or lobster boils aboard a fishing boat accompanied by the lilting tunes of a fiddling captain and his family, and some of the finest dining and local fare available on our fair isle. Your pre-trip information kit will include links to some of our favorite local culinary highlights, activities, cultural venues for the areas chosen and more, allowing you to customize your Island bike adventure to your own particular tastes and interests. Each itinerary’s food/drink stops and accommodation venues will be different.

If you’d like to take your doggo on holiday, they’ll lap up the fun and adventures in PEI too. We offer four dog-friendly itineraries, with pet cleaning fees and a Burley Tail Wagon included.

Cycling Dates & Availability

Tours can start any day you choose. Many of the properties are small Inns and B&Bs and space is limited. Some operations are seasonal and may not be open from October to May. It’s important to book early, especially for travel in July and August when “no vacancies” often  occur, although we have alternative accommodation options in each destination when our first choices aren’t possible. Some of PEI’s dining operations are seasonal, so advance planning for meals becomes more important before mid June / after mid September. Groups: many of the properties we use are small scale, so ample advance booking is essential to avoid disappointment.

Families & Groups

We have child trailers available for family touring and a wide selection of youth bicycles and trail-a-bikes.

If you’re looking for adventure without any of the hassle, have us custom-design your custom PEI cycle tour – guided or independent. We can customize trip accommodations and distances. We’ll design your tour to your schedule, special needs and can book basic or deluxe hotels to suit your budget/tastes.

Routes & Terrain

All ride options indicate total distance and, when available, we often provide multiple daily ride options to accommodate different cycling abilities + comfort levels with shared roadways. After departing Charlottetown, most of our supported cycling itineraries aim to stay 2 nights at each property; not only does it help to keep luggage transfer costs down but on alternate days there are options to lengthen or shorten your suggested route or even take an occasional day off riding if desired. We mostly recommend scenic byways, heritage roads & the Confederation Trail. Road cycling will either be on a broad shoulder or on less-travelled paved surfaces. Terrain is generally gently rolling and our route plotting software includes an auto-generated description of each ride option’s terrain type, elevation and more.

PEI Bicycle Tours – FAQ’s Tour Tips & Things to Bring PEI Cycling Laws & Safety

Ride distances

Rides average ~50 kms/day, but vary according to available accommodations. Itineraries can be developed around a variety of our preferred small scale Island inns, bed & breakfasts or hotels with just minor fluctuations in daily mileage. Extensions are always possible. Shorter routes on alternate days too. For families with young children, our Confederation Trail or North Shore Bliss tours might be most appropriate, featuring less ambitious distances and more dedicated bike lanes.

Breakfast is included by many lodging partners, except at these/other properties indicated in your quote: -Lane’s Cottages -Shanty Stay -Dalvay In all cases, breakfast is available nearby, or at the facilities with local payment.

Accommodations

We’ve hand-selected preferred inn and b&b operators for our independent cycle tour programs, all with private bath and near evening meal venues. Beware that PEI has a very limited # of short term rental properties outside of the main urban centers so it’s very important to plan in advance to secure preferred properties.

Tip to Tip - We did have a great bike ride and visit to this beautiful island. We enjoyed the island, the people and characters we met, the variety and quality of places to stay and the scenery, especially the north coastal bike roads along the National Park. Crossroads was easy to work with and answered questions about the pre-trip quickly.  I will recommend your company and the PEI trip to friends. Thank you for helping us make this an enjoyable experience.

We loved the PEI cycling tour.  The B&B's were wonderful.  Thanks for helping with our blown tire.  This is definitely something we would recommend and would love to do again.

Our PEI tip-to-tip ride was phenomenal! Lodging choices were excellent and the people you teamed up with in PEI were lovely. We truly enjoyed it.

Mom and I had a great trip to PEI and enjoyed ourselves very much!  We loved the countryside and the tour was very beautiful and varied.  The tour was excellent and we were grateful that you chose less hilly roads, where possible.  The inns were very good.  The B&B at Montegue was really lovely.

Confederation trail - We loved the trail.  The lodging accommodations were great and nicer than expected.  Your local team were wonderful.  The trip was a very positive experience and we loved it.

We met SO many wonderful people along the way in PEI and saw so many wonderful things.  We look forwards to learning about your other destinations.  We would do a Crossroads bike trip anytime because we know that it would go as planned.

5 day Road - We fell in love with the Island.  I would change nothing.  Your tour books/GPS were very accurate.  We would definitely recommend this tour.

We completed a 12 day self-guided cycle tour of the Confederation Trail end-to-end including all the coastal spurs, about 350 miles. ALL the accommodations PEI Cycle tours made were awesome- some fancy, some unique and all comfortable, clean and interesting. Cynthia is awesome, she was engaged throughout the planning and during our trip. Every detail of the trip was thoughtfully anticipated and addressed. Stacy shuttled our luggage Inn to Inn but quickly became a friend we looked toward to seeing everyday along the trail with her big smile and island hospitality. We're looking forward to going back for another cycling trip with PEI Cycling Tours. Gary W, Kittery Point, ME

I am a busy woman (mom of six) and don't usually have time to leave reviews. BUT, I insist on writing this one, because I called Cynthia to ask how close she was located to our desired trailhead, and she was so gracious and honest, that she recommended another rental shop closer to our destination, which could accommodate our group more easily, distance-wise. That is good, old-fashioned customer service. Cynthia was kind, sincere, and super helpful. Definitely five stars for genuine goodness!

We love taking cycling tours when we visit new places and since this was not only our first visit to PEI, but the Maritimes as a whole, we really were excited to book a tour with Cynthia. We only had part of one day, but she helped us make the most of it. We were able to cycle part of the Confederation Trail as well as highlights of Charlottetown. The day was warm and we popped into a micro brewery for a sample and also finished the tour with a delicious late lunch. These are all things that can be configured, depending on time and what you'd like to do. Cynthia's tours are very customizable! My only regret is that we had such a great time talking with her that we didn't take many photos. My husband and I felt we were out riding with a friend, she gave us great tips for the rest of our visit. I highly recommend the tour and visiting this beautiful corner of Canada.

Our trip included a stop at the Governor's Mansion...and Cynthia is aquainted with the man! Much fun!!

Cynthia did a great job from our first contact over the internet to picking us up at the B and B in Charlottetown to getting us outfitted and on the road. It was my wife's first bike adventure and our first visit to PEI. The distances were just right and the B and B accommodations were great. The food was excellent. I keep thinking back to the Portuguese fish and chips and Waterfront 21 in Souris Cynthia also allowed us to change plans on the fly when we decided trail was better than road. Again a great job and I highly recommend Cynthia and PEI Cycling Tours.

We signed up for a 4-day cycling tour with Cynthia. We chose her in part because she is a PEI native and incredibly knowledge about the island, the biking trails, the restaurants and the lodging. She put together a tour for us that was beautiful and met our specific needs -- on quiet roads or bike trails, and set up our overnights at lovely b&bs and provided terrific recommendations for meals. She even recommended a great local band that happened to be playing in a small town while we were there. She provided all the maps we needed, plus lots of information and advice, transported our luggage and rescued us in a huge rainstorm!!! Plus, she is a delight in her knowledge, reasonably priced, and fun! We have taken several self-guided bike tours and we could not recommend her more highly.

We had a wonderful bike tour on Prince Edward Island, thanks to PEI cycling tours. Cynthia King is terrific: knowledgeable about the island and about bikes, organized, cheerful, thoughtful. It was a pleasure getting to know her. She planned our itinerary with all our wishes and needs in mind. The accommodations were great, so were her suggestions for lunches and dinners. The bikes and other gear were in perfect condition. The first day we were caught in unexpected heavy rain and the two of us, both seniors, are slow. When we finally arrived at the entrance to the resort where we were spending the night, Cynthia had arranged for a golf cart, complete with dry towels, to take us the rest of the way. The next day she arrived early to clean our bikes and make sure they were working perfectly. She drove us to see the Potato Museum (very cool) then sent us on our way. Happily every other day the weather was absolutely perfect and so was our trip. I thought her suggestion to use the Phone app Find My Friends was inspired; she always knew exactly where we were on the trails.

7 Day (6 night) Tip-To-Tip PEI Bicycle Tour

Experience the entire Island with this tip-to-tip tour cycling an average of 45 kilometres per day. pei cycling tours

Our tour begins by shuttling you to the western end of PEI. This shuttle ride will take approximately 2 hours. During your ride your shuttle driver will give be able to provide you with all kinds of information on PEI, its history, landmarks and attractions.

Sneak a peek of our PEI wind farms in the distance as your start your cycling trip along the coast of PEI with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way take time to stop at one of our fishing ports to watch our local fishermen starting or ending their day with fresh catches on board. Keep your eye open for our wild foxes which many tours report seeing in this area.

You will spend some time cycling on Confederation Trail which is the Island’s former rail way system. This means the trail is flat with very little elevation making for an easy ride. The trail is crushed gravel and only cyclists and pedestrians are permitted on the trail. Read More

As you enter the second largest city in PEI, Summerside, stop and treat yourself to a ice cream at one of the many local dairy bars.

As you continue your tour you will ride on the road and enter Stanley Bridge where we have an excellent recommendation for a seafood dinner! Continuing along you will encounter slight elevation changes to stretch your legs out a bit. Cycle past or stop in to the Anne of Green Gables attraction as you pass by on this leg of your tour.

The next section of your tour will take you along our most popular beaches. Stop and kick your feet through the sand and dip your toes in the water. If you like seafood we have a great recommendation for a mid-afternoon snack.

Continue through one of our favourite sections of the Confederation Trail along St. Peters Bay. Watch for bald eagles or hawks fishing in the bay which is a common sight. Save room for dinner at a very popular restaurant in this area!

Finishing your tour make sure you take time to stop and snap some pictures to help remember your adventure as you will have some great views of the Atlantic Ocean. If time allows make a quick stop at the #1 rated beach in Canada.

At the end of your tour our shuttle driver will be waiting to shuttle you back to our store in Charlottetown. This shuttle ride will take approximately 90 minutes.

When planning your itinerary we select the best accommodations for your route which, normally, include breakfast.

OLS is a locally owned company. There is a good chance when you call or email you will be speaking with the owner who was born and raised on PEI. This gives us local knowledge of routes, accommodations, points of interest, restaurants and unique relationships that are difficult to replicate from a tour operator based outside PEI.

OLS is a bicycle shop which means we have access to the best bicycles available. Our rental bikes are replaced at the beginning of each rental season and are tuned up after each rental by our certified on site bike mechanics to ensure a perfect ride!

In addition, OLS provides the most detailed maps but also includes a Garmin GPS device which provides turn by turn directions similar to a car GPS. This ensure you get to each nights accommodations stress free and do not miss any points of interest along the way.

You'll also get to soak up some sun on the endless sandy beaches of Prince Edward Island and visit the less explored abandoned rail stations. Bike tours are undoubtedly one of the best ways to create memories in a destination like this.
