Indonesia Travel Requirements: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

The Emerald of the Equator beckons your arrival!

Here’s something for everyone to celebrate! Indonesia travel restrictions will be revised on May 18, 2022, to provide greater convenience to all inbound fully vaccinated visitors. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling to Indonesia, including entry requirements and current COVID-19 protocols.

Indonesia entry requirements

prambanan temple

Only fully vaccinated people are eligible for quarantine-free travel (i.e. have received more than two doses of the vaccine). Tourists under the age of 12 must adhere to the same Indonesia travel regulations as the adult(s) accompanying them. Before being allowed to enter Indonesia, all foreign visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months and a valid e-Visa.

Most tourists will require a valid e-Visa to gain entry. Citizens of a few countries, however, are eligible for a Special Visa on Arrival, which allows them to stay in Indonesia for 30 days with the option to extend it for another 30. A return or onward flight ticket; COVID-19 insurance; Rp 500,000 processing fee; and other relevant health documents will be required of those who choose to do so.

Travelers from ASEAN countries can also enter through the Visa Exemption Facility, which allows them to visit Indonesia without a visa for up to 30 days.

Travelers will, however, need to bring a printed or digital proof of vaccination with them to show when asked.

Remember to download the PeduliLindugi mobile application and register your COVID-19 vaccination certificate here before your trip to Indonesia. Your vaccination certificate will then appear on your application, allowing you to enter many of Indonesia’s indoor public spaces.

Arrival in Indonesia

Nusa Penida

Travelers will be subjected to temperature checks upon arrival in Indonesia, with those found unfit being required to take a PCR test. This will apply to all visitors arriving in Indonesia through common entry points such as Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, the resort islands of Bintan and Batam, and land borders in West Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara. This page contains a complete list of entry points.

Those who test positive or are not fully vaccinated will be required to spend an additional five days in a government-approved hotel. After five days, or if they test negative during a second PCR test on the fourth day of quarantine — whichever comes first — these travelers will be released.

During your stay

In recent news, Indonesia has joined other Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia in relaxing its mask mandate. Mask-wearing will now be optional for most places but will remain compulsory for crowded outdoor areas, indoor activities, and public transport. Those with underlying health conditions or cold symptoms and the elderly are still strongly encouraged to wear masks.

Travellers will also be required to use the PeduliLindungi app for contact tracing and for access to places of interest like shopping malls and tourist attractions. Social distancing should also be maintained at all times.

You now have all the necessary info to kickstart your travels and visit Indonesia! If you need some tips on what to do there, click here to get some ideas about the myriad of activities before booking your flights to Jakarta, Bali, Ubud, or other places in Indonesia.

FAQ about Entry Regulations and Requirements for Bali

Do I require a Visa to enter Bali?

If you are not a citizen of one of the 9 ASEAN countries or Timor Leste, you must obtain a Visa to enter Indonesia and Bali. The specific Visa type depends on your nationality, the purpose of your travel, and the duration of your stay. Click the button below to determine the applicable requirements for your situation.

Are there specific passport requirements for Bali?

Yes. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival, without exceptions. Ensure your passport has a minimum of one blank page and is in good condition; worn or damaged passports may be rejected, leading to denial of entry.

Is a return ticket necessary for traveling to Bali?

Yes, even if not always checked at immigration. Airlines and immigration authorities may insist on a return ticket within the validity period of your visa.

Do I need to complete a customs declaration form?

Yes, it is mandatory. For arrivals in Bali, you can conveniently fill out the Customs Declaration Form online before your arrival. Use the following link for the E-CD (Electronic Custom Declaration). The form can be completed up to 72 hours before your arrival, and you will receive a QR code for scanning by officers after collecting your luggage at the airport.

Is there a Tourist Tax, and when does it start?

The tourist tax is planned to commence on February 14, 2024. The fee is IDR 150,000 per person (approximately USD 10 and AUD 15). This local tax applies only to Bali, not the entire Indonesia. It’s intended for purposes like trash management and infrastructure improvement. The payment can be made online, and the system is still under development.

Is an International Driving License necessary for scooter or motorbike rental?

Yes, it is now a mandatory requirement. Bring your international driver’s license if you intend to rent a scooter. If unavailable in your home country, a digital or printed version can suffice.

Is Medical Travel Insurance mandatory?

No, it is not obligatory, but it is recommended. While not required, having medical travel insurance is recommended to cover potential accidents in Bali. Without proper insurance, hospitals may demand cash payments and may deny treatment.

Are there sufficient international flights to Bali?

Yes, Bali (Denpasar DPS Airport) is well-connected internationally. Numerous budget and international carriers operate flights, although not all have fully returned to pre-COVID schedules.

Is it logical to travel to Bali through Jakarta?

Potentially, depending on the season. If flights to Bali are unavailable or expensive, consider booking a flight to Jakarta and then a domestic flight to Bali on the same day. Airlines like Citilink, Batik Air, Air Asia, Lion Air, and Garuda offer several daily flights. Ensure a 3-4 hour gap between your arrival in Jakarta and the domestic flight to Bali for immigration, luggage, and terminal transitions.

I feel so blessed again in my marriage after Doctor Olu brought back my husband that separated with me for good 3 months. Even though I have mouths all over my body, it won’t be enough to thank Doctor Olu for his help in my life. My husband separated with me for 3 months and has been in pain and agony without him. So, I searched for help everywhere but nothing worked out not until I meant Doctor Olu who I contacted online. I explained my situation to him and he promised that my husband will get back to me within 72 hours so that my heart still beats for him. I believed in him and he prepared a spell for me and my husband called me exactly when Doctor Olu said. He pleaded and said he needs me back and now we are living happily again for the past 9 months. That will be very bad of me if I ever withhold information that might help several people out there . I am on here to commend the work that VIRTUALHACKNET RECOVERY SERVICES did for me after Loosing my money to an investment scheme that I came across online . This company claimed to have the best technology to mine and trade Bitcoin for its investors and bring back a fixed return every week depending on how much you invested .. the first couple of weeks was calm and profitable as well , I was very excited about that and out of that excitement I invested a total of $114k but never got my returns as it used to come .. 2 weeks went by and still nothing , couldn’t access the website anymore even though my login credentials were all right , that’s when I knew I had been scammed , a week after I saw a comment about a hacking agent “ Virtualhacknet @ gmail dot com “ on a TikTok about Bitcoin and scam*ers and with a lot of people on there testifying about him and how good he is .. I had to give him a try and guess what ? All my stolen investments was recovered back without a single dime left behind . They are active on telegram as well with the username @ Virtualhacknet .

“ CAN I RECOVER BACK MY LOST FUNDS FROM A SCAMMER? How to recover your money from fake brokers, fake bitcoin investment platforms, forex schemes, binary, false investments proposals. I lost my hard earned money on a fake website. Claiming high return on investment after a momentary space of a week. I invested in their website. After two weeks, I couldn’t gain any access to my capital and profits, I asked why I could not receive my money, then i was told to make an additional deposit of $26,000 for a dumb reason I couldn’t remember. That was when I knew there was something wrong. I am a policeman with two beautiful daughters, I lost my wife few years ago and I promised myself I was going to do all I could to take care of my kids after the demise of my wife, but falling for such scam for acquisitive reasons and puting my children’s future at risk was quite unwelcoming. I went broke afterwards. During the course of trying to redeem myself after few months of getting scammed, i was given a referral on reddit which navigated me to a hacker on the internet. I patiently took some time to comprehend the core activities of this profound hackers. The Asore Corporation is a vulnerability coordination agency that performs a hack penetration guage to provide wealth recovery services for individuals and companies who have lost money through fraudulent online platforms. This organization was able to help me recover my lost bitcoins. I am truly pleased with the works of this hackers. Greener pastures will always come with snakes and one has to stay ready to fumigate all the time .. it’s really sad that there are people in this world who would take what doesn’t belong to them .. what someone has worked all their life to acquire and you’d just sweep in to extort that from the person with fraudulent means .. how do they sleep at night ?? .. knowing what they have done .. these are peoples life savings for gods sake !, well I guess life is just unfair … if you’ve lost your money to any fraud investment company , don’t cry too much you’re not alone in this, many individuals have lost there money to scams like that including me but there’s a way to get it all back .. I contacted a very reputable and well know hacker JETHACKS .. my funds of €210k was successful recovered through the services of JETHACKS whom I reached out to on Email : jethacks7 @ GMAIL .COM after I had witnessed his recovery service firsthand through my friend who had his funds recovered by the Great hacker . My heart is filled with joy after a successful funds recovery with KNIGHTHOODBOT RECOVERY SERVICES. I was left helpless after loosing my life savings to a crypto scam, this lady that I met online on Instagram “ Miss Gray “ promised me that this was the right choice for me to invest in the trade market and grow my money instead of leaving it in the bank while the banks use my money to trade in the stock market and earn their profits with my money without my knowledge, all this I have a serious thought and decided to follow up her advice which ended up leaving me with nothing after , I only got paid once from the trades and never received a dime after that . My husband never knew about this at first , I tried keeping it from him but he’s the sensitive type , he knew something was bothering me and at some point I had to open up , he was so disappointed at first for me not telling him all this while . When he heard how much I lost to the company he quickly took the matter up and hired a private hacker to help with the case “ KNIGHTHOODBOT @ gmail dot com “ and that was how the scam scheme came to an end . He recovered the whole £584,500 back to a new wallet .. I’m grateful to both the hacker and my husband of course for not giving up on me even when I lost hope . In case you ever find yourself in a situation whereby you need a hacker’s services you should not hesitate to contact the Hacking agency either through their direct email : KNIGHTHOODBOT @ gmail dot com or their official telegram account: @ KNIGHTHOODBOT9

My humble regards to everyone reading comments on this platform and a great thanks to the admin who made this medium a lively one whereby everyone can share an opinion, I am Mrs. Caroline John, from Montana, United States. I’m a nurse by profession, I had a serious health issue that took me 8 months to get back to work, during this period of eight months I came across an advert with a lot of good comments under the trading broker platform. I was very interested so I decided to contact the trading platform and invest with them, after my first deposit I was told there is an increase in buying stocks so I had to send another money and this whole thing continued for a good 6 months. before I could realize I was already bankrupt when I discovered that I have been scammed for a total sum of $357,890, I tried to get some recommended hackers online but I ended up getting scammed of an additional $35k, it hurts me so much, I already gave it up but then I came in contact with [email protected] or [email protected] who I also message directly via whatsapp on: 31685248506 Telegram:  31685248506 and he responded to me urgently and helped me to get back all my funds, everything was sent to me at once. Albert Gonzalez wizard proves to me that scammed crypto can be recovered. All thanks to Albert Gonzalez wizard.

It baffles me when these scammers out here think that they could just rip off anyone they come across and go scot-free , well I never gave up on my funds when I learnt that I have been scammed on an online investment . I was added to this telegram group in September 2022 and they only discussed about Bitcoin and stock market, on there you’d see a lot of people who claim to invest with the company and have earned lots of profits with them over the years , but all that was happening there was just to deceive us that were added to the group and I was so unlucky to fall for their trick , started investing with the company as well in October after I thought I had studied the group and how everything works , I ended up loosing over £617,000 to them , this was just my actual investment not to talk of the said earned profits that I don’t even know if any of that was true .. after learning that the company was a scam company that never even existed , I swore never to back down till I get my funds back , I then hired a private hacker who helped infiltrate their website and track down the transactions with the proofs I provided to them .. I am very glad we pulled this off and at the end of it all I recovered all my money and made sure their website was exposed so that others won’t fall victim to their tricks . Recommendation to a recovery professional. I lost my bitcoin to a phony blockchain impostor on Facebook after I foolishly fell for their trick. They gained access to my blockchain wallet account and took a total of 7.0 bitcoins from it after posing as blockchain official support. I was in agony and in awe because this was everything I had and had saved up for. Then my niece gave me the name of a Wizesafetyrecovery (Wizesafetyrecovery @ Gmail com). I looked him up online and saw that he had little experience helping people find their lost bitcoins, so I wrote to the group directly to explain my situation. As a result, they assisted me in getting my bitcoin back just two days after I notified them. We sincerely appreciate Wizesafetyrecovery assistance. You can also contact via WhatsApp (+1 305 902 6599) to recover any lost money you may have suffered through an online fraud.

I recently hired a team of hackers known as Grayhathacks to help me bust my cheating wife. They were able to clone her phone and with the help of sophisticated spyware, I was able to mirror her phone’s activity and gain access to her emails, text messages, and other data. I was shocked and horrified to discover that not only was she cheating, but that she was actively planning to leave me and my 3 year old son. I couldn’t believe the level of betrayal, as she ridiculed me with her friends while I was busy trying to make our marriage work.

The process only took close to an hour, and I’m still spying on her as I haven’t yet gathered enough courage to confront her. Every day, it seems like I discover more and more about her infidelity, and I’m heartbroken but relieved to have enough motive to close this bad chapter of my life. I hate that I had to resort to spying on her, but she left me no choice.

I want to thank Grayhathacks for their professionalism, they are the real deal. I would not waste my time with any of these other hackers, and wish I had known about them sooner. The use of spywares, bugs, and malwares to hack into phones and other data is a highly technical and advanced process, and Grayhathacks were able to carry out the task with skill and expertise. I would highly recommend their services to anyone in a similar situation. You can email them at [email protected]

Truth be told , crypto currency investment is quite profitable only if you are investing with the right company and finding the right company to invest with is where the whole mistake is made because a lot of them out there tend to be legit at first until you’re involved with them , I have actually been mining with one mining pool for over 8 months and could see my profit earnings but for me to withdraw my earnings that’s where the issue is , I have over 24btc in the website that I could nit access any longer .. I wanted to overlook it at first and never get myself in wolves in any type of online investment but my wife never let go even when I did , she somehow managed to come across a Recovery hacking agent “ Virtualhacknet @ gmail . Com “ on LinkedIn . I explained every details to them and provided them with every information and aid they needed and at the very end of the week , I and my wife were both filled with smile and relief , finally we recovered back our Bitcoin .. I’m very grateful to the Agent that was assigned to us , he was very kind and explained every little detail to us .. you should do well to contact them on telegram @ VIRTUALHACKNET for a swift response .

I met this guy at a coffee shop one morning while I was driving to work , him and the girlfriend was talking about an investment where the man lost over $700,000 worth of Bitcoin but the fun part was that he was able to recover it all again , when I heard him saying this , I waited outside for them to finish up and i quickly approached him and was Like “ I overheard you discussing with your friend on how you lost your investment and was able to recover all back “ I was just curious to know how he did that because I have just recently been scammed as well and ever since then I’ve been depressed till I met this young man , he now told me how he was able to come across a hacking agent who helped him retrieve back his lost investment , me hearing his story and how everything went down with the hacking agent I quickly requested for the Agents contact which he gave to me , I’d say that was a miracle because I didn’t expect that I was ever going to find someone who had been in same situation as I am not to talk of being able to recover the lost money back but all this happens before my very eyes , I contacted the Agent through Email : KNIGHTHOODBOT @ gmail .com , and from that very point everything turned around for the better for me , I lost $318,000 to the scammers in total but when the agent was done , not even a dime was left behind for them, all was retrieved back to me and I can’t really put in writing how excited I am . I am here with my story to help people out there who has lost hope in recovering their money lost to scammers . Give this team a chance and worry less .

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Indonesia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Indonesian Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Indonesia.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Indonesia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Indonesia.

You can get a 30-day visa on arrival ( VOA ) for:

  • tourism or visiting
  • business or an official meeting
  • procurement of goods
  • official visits or government duties

The VOA costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, payable in cash or by card. It is valid for single entry only. You must meet passport validity requirements and have a return or onward ticket. Most of the main airports and ports issue VOAs .

You can also apply for a visa at least a week before you leave on the Indonesian immigration website . You will find options to apply for a multiple-entry visa or a 60-day visa.

Extending your visa or residence permit

The 30-day visa can be extended once, for another 30 days, at any immigration office within Indonesia. If you applied online, you can get the extension on the Indonesian immigration website .

Make sure you extend your visa within the initial 30 days to avoid an overstay fine of 1 million rupiah a day.

KITAS extension (stay or work permit)

If you’re a KITAS holder with an expired stay permit, you can apply for an extension from outside Indonesia through a sponsor. The sponsor must submit the application to the immigration office attaching a copy of your passport and proof of your departure from Indonesia. The application is submitted without biometric sampling. The sponsor must report your arrival within 30 days.

Beware of visa scams by fake visa agents who, having taken your money, may fail to provide a visa or supply the wrong visa. This could result in you overstaying and getting a fine of 1 million rupiah a day, plus possible deportation and a re-entry ban. Use the Indonesian immigration website to get or extend your visa.

Visa scams are increasing in Indonesia. Some travellers have lost significant amounts of money. Others have been deported despite paying a large fee to an agent to get the correct visa or extension.

Overstaying your visa

If you overstay your visa, officials will stop you at the airport and issue a fine of 1 million rupiah for each day you overstayed.

If you do not pay, the authorities can detain you until the fine is paid.

If your visa will expire during a period of hospitalisation or detention, contact Indonesian immigration before your visa expires to avoid any overstay fines. The British Embassy in Jakarta can help with this.

Registering with the police

If you stay in private accommodation in Indonesia, you must register your presence with the local police at the nearest police station. You could be fined 5 million Indonesian rupiah if you do not register. If you’re staying in a hotel, you will be registered automatically.

Bali tourist levy

The Bali provincial government has introduced a tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (approximately £8) for all foreign tourists arriving in Bali. You can pay online or on arrival. See the  Bali provincial government website for more details.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Indonesia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Indonesia guide .

Departure tax

Airport tax is included in the cost of all domestic flights within Indonesia. For some international flights departing Indonesia, airport departure tax might not be included in the price of the ticket. Check with your airline or travel agent before you travel.

JAKARTA TRAVEL GUIDE with Sample Itinerary & Budget + Indonesia Requirements

JAKARTA TRAVEL GUIDE with Sample Itinerary & Budget + Indonesia Requirements

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

“Anywhere else, aside from Jakarta?”

This was the reply I would usually get whenever I said I was going to the Indonesian capital. “No, just Jakarta,” was my answer. And it took them a second to realize that they heard my response right.

Jakarta feels strangely familiar. There is so much about it that reminds me of Metro Manila, my home city. Both are capital cities of developing Southeast Asian nations. Both are among the biggest urban hubs in the world, serving as a home and/or workplace for tens of millions of people. And for many international tourists, both are seen mostly as a jump-off point to another destination, a necessary means to a more spectacular end. In Jakarta’s case, this spectacular end can be the beaches of Bali , the temples of Yogyakarta , or the picturesque volcanoes in other parts of Java.

But like Manila, Jakarta can hold its own. It may not be as Instagram-worthy, but it does have a long history and rich culture, making it a great stop for Indonesia first timers. From the numerous museums to the sumptuous street food, the city will give you a taste of what the world’s greatest archipelago has to offer.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING JAKARTA

Jakarta is the capital of and the largest city in Indonesia. Located in the island of Java, the city serves as the economic, political, and cultural center of the country. Jakarta is sprawling. Over the years, as it continues to draw in more people, it also paves way for the development of neighboring areas.

Jakarta Sign

Today, Jakarta may also refer to the Greater Jakarta area or the Jakarta metropolitan area, which is also called locally as Jabodetabek , short for Jakarta–Bogor–Depok–Tangerang–Bekasi, referring to the nearby cities in West Java and Banten. And with an estimated population of 35 million, it is the second largest urban hub in the world, next only to Tokyo.

The history of Jakarta dates back to the 4th century CE, making it one of the oldest inhabited cities in Southeast Asia. It has been known by several names. Under the Sunda Kingdom, it was known as Sunda Kelapa, an important trading port at the time. In 1619, the Dutch took control and founded Batavia which became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. Then in 1942, Batavia fell to the Japanese and was under the Japanese occupation until 1945. It was 1949 when the Indonesian independence was proclaimed and Jakarta became the national capital.

ESSENTIAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

  • Language: Indonesian or Bahasa Indonesia. But most can understand and speak English.
  • Religion: Islam is the dominant religion. A small part of the population practice Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
  • Timezone: UTC+7 (Indonesia Western Time). Jakarta is one hour behind Manila, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
  • Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR, Rp). USD 1 is around IDR 15,700; EUR 1 = IDR 16,200; PHP 1 = IDR 273 (as of December 2022).
  • Modes of Payment: Cash. Some establishments like restaurants also accept credit cards, but most still prefer cash. However, there are some places that only take card payments.

INDONESIA TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

As of our most recent visit (November 2022), these are the requirements required for travelers going to Jakarta as mandated by the government. These must be presented when you check-in for your flight.

  • Passport. Must be valid for at least 6 months.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate. Only fully vaccinated individuals are allowed to enter Jakarta. Your vaccination certificate must indicate 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
  • PeduliLindungi App. Download the app through google playstore or app store and register.
  • E-customs Declaration Form. Fill out the form here . Print or save a digital copy of the generated QR Code.

Depending on your country of citizenship, a visa may also be required. (Filipino citizens may enter Indonesia VISA-FREE.)

WHERE TO STAY IN JAKARTA

Jakarta is huge. Covering 664.01 square kilometers, Jakarta is divided it into its five administrative cities: Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and South Jakarta. Easy to remember, right? But these three areas have the key points of interest for tourists:

The Packer Lodge Jakarta

  • Central Jakarta is home to major landmarks like the National Monument and Istiqlal Mosque. Also situated here is Gambir Station, a major railway station that connects the capital to other cities in Java Island. You’ll also find Grand Indonesia, one of the biggest malls in the country, around the corner. A large concentration of the accommodations in Central Jakarta can be found in Menteng .
  • North Jakarta covers the harbor area, the historic port of Sunda Kelapa, and Ancol, a waterfront complex with a theme park, water park, and other various attractions.
  • West Jakarta , the closest to the airport, roughly 30 minutes away. Within its territory lie parts of Kota Tua, Jakarta’s Old Town. Glodok , Jakarta’s Chinatown, where you can find a lot of food spots, is also here. A number of different types of accommodations are spread over West Jakarta.
  • South Jakarta , which harbors the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD), with plenty of office buildings, condominiums, hotels, and shopping malls. If you’re interested in experiencing the nightlife in Jakarta, this is the place to be. The accommodations in this area varies from high-end hotels to budget hostels so there are a lot to choose from.
  • East Jakarta . This is the largest among the five administrative cities of Jakarta. However, there’s not a lot of accommodations available here. It is also the area farthest from the airport.

Best Area to Stay

In our opinion, the best area to stay is the part where Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, and North Jakarta meet. Staying here puts you in a position close to the key attractions and with plenty of dining and lodging options.

This area includes these neighborhoods:

Best Area to Stay in Jakarta

  • Glodok (Chinatown) in West Jakarta
  • Menteng in Central Jakarta
  • Kota Tua in North/West Jakarta

Any of places above are great for first-time Jakarta visitors. However, if you’re the type of traveler who likes to spend their nights going out or partying, South Jakarta might be a great option too. Just keep in mind that this area is a bit farther from other parts of the city, especially if you plan to visit attractions in North Jakarta.

Top Budget Hotels and Hostels in Jakarta

I booked a dorm bed at The Packer Lodge near Kota Tua for only PHP 450 per night . Yep, that’s only USD 8 or 124,000 IDR. But by random streak of good luck, I was upgraded to a private solo room for FREE! (Possibly because they might have overbooked the dorm.)

HOW TO GET TO JAKARTA

The primary airport that serves Jakarta is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) , formerly called Jakarta Cengkareng Airport. It is located at Benda, Tangerang, close to West Jakarta. It was expanded in 1991 to replace Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport, which now services mostly domestic and private flights—for international flights. CGK is said to be the busiest airport in Southeast Asia and currently has 3 terminals with a fourth terminal being built.

Jakarta Airport

Manila to Jakarta

As Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta is well-connected. If you’re coming from Manila, Cebu Pacific flies directly to Jakarta and vice versa DAILY. The flight departs from Manila at 8:40 PM and takes around four hours. This is perfect for busy bees who cannot afford to file another leave of absence from work or students who can’t miss a school day. This also means you arrive in Jakarta just before midnight, bypassing heavy traffic to the city center.

For your return journey, Cebu Pacific’s Jakarta-Manila flights are scheduled at 12:30 AM, allowing you to make the most of your last day in Jakarta! Just leave your luggage temporarily at your hotel upon checkout, explore the city the entire day, and pick it up before heading to the airport.

Manila to Jakarta Cebu Pacific

Cebu Pacific has three bundle options for your flight booking: GO Basic comes with a free hand-carry baggage allowance (7kg). If you want a checked bag and reserved seats, GO Easy includes a one piece checked baggage (up to 20kg) and a standard seat. For more flexibility, GO Flexi allows you to cancel your flight for free and store the value as a travel fund.

To book, visit: www.cebupacificair.com .

Jakarta Airport to City Center

Travel time from the airport to your hotel depends on which part of Jakarta you choose to stay, but it could take between 30 minutes to an hour. The most convenient way is by taking a taxi or using a ride hailing app. More details about these below.

Countless taxis await potential passengers at the airport. After going through customs and before reaching the exit, you’ll be welcomed by people offering you taxi services. If you want to take a taxi, a recommended taxi service by locals is Blue Bird . You’ll find a Blue Bird booth to your left after you exit, near the SIM card stores.

However, in my experience, their rate was higher than Grab, but this could vary. You can go to the booth to inquire about the fare going to your hotel and compare it to rates on Grab or Gojek.

By Grab or Gojek

Jakarta Airport Grab Pickup Point

These two are the ride hailing apps available in Jakarta. It is easy to use and booking a ride only takes a few minutes. The Grab pick-up point in Terminal 3 is located at the parking of the arrival area. After you pass through customs, turn to your right and head towards the Pick-up zone. You should be exiting through the West Lobby door. At the parking, you will find signage for the Grab Pick-up Point.

It is important to know that the fare that shows on the app is not the final fare. A parking fee and highway fee or toll fee will be added on top of it. This was also clearly communicated by the person at the Grab Pick-up point once I got there and the driver after I entered the car. But the Grab fare still turned out cheaper than the Blue Bird rate even after adding these fees.

  • Parking Fee: IDR 5,000
  • Highway/toll fee: IDR 18,500

Gojek is also available at the airport. The pick-up point at Terminal 3 is also located at the international parking area. Gojek also adds the parking fee & toll fee plus a location fee on top of the fare that shows on the app when you book your ride.

Internet Connection / Data SIM in Jakarta

The most affordable way of staying connected in Indonesia is by purchasing a data SIM card. However, SIM cards in Jakarta need to be registered first, so you’ll need to present your passport to get one. Two of the most popular internet providers are XL Axiata and Telkomsel.

You can get a SIM card at the airport, but keep in mind that the prices here are significantly higher than prices at a telco branch or SIM card center. Moreover, airport stores are open only from 7:00AM to 3:00AM.

If you’re from any of the countries below, you can have the data SIM card delivered to you via Klook:

  • Deliver SIM to INDIA
  • Deliver to SINGAPORE
  • Deliver SIM to HONG KONG
  • Deliver SIM to VIETNAM

If you’re from the Philippines or any other country, you may opt to pick up Indonesia DATA SIM at the Jakarta Airport (Soekarno Hatta International Airport). The pick up location is at the JavaMifi booth at Terminal 3 Departure at the 2nd floor. The staff will also help you set up the sim card on your phone. However, the operating hours is from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM only. You can purchase one here: Indonesia DATA SIM Jakarta Airport Pickup!

If you’re arriving in Jakarta late at night, you won’t be able to avail of this since their registration has a cut-off time. Another option to consider is Grapari , the SIM card center of the telecommunications company Telkomsel . They have multiple locations all over Jakarta. If you want to save and you can manage to go from the airport without data, just look up the Grapari branch closest to your hotel. More info on its website .

Jakarta Airport Data SIM Internet Rates

HOW TO GET AROUND JAKARTA

Jakarta is a very busy city and there are various transportation options available. There are a lot of taxis all over the city and you can also use ride hailing apps. Commuting is also an option since they have an efficient public bus transportation called Transjakarta . However, because it is a busy city, the traffic gets heavy especially during rush hours.

If you’re visiting attractions, some of them are within walking distance from each other. You can walk from The National Monument to see Merdeka Palace, and then walk to the National Museum. You can also explore Kota Tua or the Old Town on foot. You can choose from the following mode of transportations to explore Indonesia’s capital depending on your budget and preferences.

There are a lot of taxis around the city. In some areas there are cabs lined up by the side of the road so you don’t have to hail a cab on the street anymore. The suggested reliable taxi company in Jakarta is Blue Bird . Their units are easy to spot because they’re, well, blue.

Riding a taxi may pose a challenge because of language barrier since not everyone speaks and understands English. But what you can do is write down the address of your destination or find it on Google Maps, and show it to the driver when you take a taxi. You may also ask your hotel to call a taxi for you and ask them for help to communicate your destination to the driver.

By Grab or GoJek

Grab Bike Motorcycles Jakarta

  • Car. If you want a more convenient mode of transportation, book a Grab or Gojek. It is more simple since all you need to do is pin your pick-up location and destination on the app and wait for your car to arrive. You may also pay using credit card or cash when using ride hailing apps.
  • Motorcycle. This is the best way to beat the traffic in Jakarta. If you’re traveling solo, Grab and GoJek also have a motorcycle/bike option. The motorcycle is also much cheaper compared to the car option. So if you’re on a budget, this is a great option to get from one place to another quicker and at a less price.

By Transjakarta Bus

Taking public transportation is the cheapest option. Each ride costs only IDR 3,500 no matter where your destination is. The bus is very efficient since there are 13 lines and over 200 stations all over the city. You may use Google maps to know which bus line you should take and where you should get off to reach your destination.

Jakarta by Bus

Here’s how you can ride the Transjakarta buses:

  • Purchase a Transjakarta Card at a convenience store. These cards are available at any Indomaret, Alfamart, and other convenience stores in Jakarta. Each card costs IDR 27,500.
  • Top up your card at the digital kiosk at any station. You may also top-up your card when you purchase it at a convenience store, but their minimum amount is IDR 50,000 while you can top up as low as P10,000 at the station.
  • Tap your bus card on the ticket barrier at the station to enter.
  • Tap again to exit the station where you’ll get off.

Riding the bus can take much longer compared to the taxi, car service, or motorcycle taxi. You can look up your destination on Google maps and compare the travel time for each and decide from there depending on your time and budget.

THINGS TO DO IN JAKARTA

Also known as Old Batavia , Kota Tua is Jakarta’s Old Town. It was a part of the first walled settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta and also served as the capital of the Dutch East Indies. In this area, you will find Dutch-style structures from the 17th century. Some of them used to be government buildings that has been turned into museums. Here are some of the places you can visit in Kota Tua.

Jakarta History Museum

After Indonesia gained its independence, it became the seat of the West Java governor until 1961 and a museum in 1974.
