Cruising the World One Port at a Time
Review of Princess Cruises’ Emerald Princess Reveals a Gem of Ship
By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: November 17, 2023
One of four sister ships, the Emerald Princess cruises on her own merit.
First Impressions Step onboard the Emerald Princess and at first glance, you’ll immediately be awed by the ship’s understated style and elegance. The Emerald Princess is graced with the same glam and glitz as her three sister ships. The jewel of this ship is the marble-floored Piazza-style atrium with its grand, spiral staircase and towering glass elevators. Here you’ll find guests mingling about, enjoying the adjacent coffee bar, wine bar and “street” entertainers.
A quick walk-through outside reveals four fresh water pools, a huge outdoor movie screen (Movies Under the Stars) and wrap-around walking track. There are activities to lure you outdoors during the day and well into the evening.
The well-designed layout means better passenger flow, fewer traffic jams entering and leaving dining rooms and smaller, intimate meeting rooms and lounges.
Cruise Maven Loves
- The adults-only Sanctuary; a quiet retreat high above the ship, with snacks and beverages included in the $10 fee.
- You can dance the night away at Skywalkers lounge. Nearly 200 feet above the sea, the view is amazing.
- Warm cookies and milk in the evening at Movies Under the Stars. Yum!
- The Ultimate Balcony Dining experience for breakfast or dinner. The name says it all.
- The self-service Launderette. It’s so nice to come home with a suitcase full of clean, neatly folded clothes.
Accommodations There are the usual suspects of cabin categories; suite, mini-suite, balcony, oceanview and interior. Of the 1,557 cabins, over half (881) have balconies. If budget allows, go for one of the 207 suites, from 461 to 687 sq. ft.
Princess offers extra amenities and perks for suites than other premium cruise lines. There’s a complimentary mini-bar set-up, free laundry and a private lounge, to name a few. One of the best perks is the exclusive breakfast at Sabatini’s, far away from the other 2,900 passengers.
While the mini-suites (323 sq. ft.) don’t offer the same amenities as the suites, you’re not left out in the cold. You still have two TVs, welcome aboard champagne and a bathtub/shower combination.
If a suite or mini-suite is not in your budget, the interior cabins are a roomy 160 sq. ft. and include a refrigerator, flat panel TV and bathroom amenities.
Oceanview staterooms vary in size from 158 to 181 sq. ft. Some oceanview staterooms have obstructed views, so be careful with your choice to avoid an embarkation day surprise.
Over half of the staterooms have a balcony, so there are plenty to choose from in a wide range of prices. An impressive 233 to 285 sq. ft. makes this the ideal in-between choice of staterooms.
Kids programs Kids from 3 to 17 years will find plenty to do onboard the Emerald Princess. Divided into three groups, ages 3-7 and 8-12 years plus teens from 13-17, each with their own supervised meeting place.
Kids even have special dinners (with counselors) while teens can attend their own formal night event. Late night group sitting is available for ages 3-12 from 10pm to 1am at $5/hour per child. Children under 3 may participate in Youth Center activities if accompanied by a parent.
Bottom line This isn’t the original Love Boat, but a cruise aboard the Emerald Princess has something that almost everyone would love. Onboard activities span the range from poolside fun and games to art history and computer classes. There’s a wedding chapel with a webcam so friends and family back home can watch the ceremony.
Foodies will love the specialty dining option aptly named “The Chef’s Table” with seating right in the galley. Perfect for families, couples and solo travelers who want a premium cruise experience and the bells and whistles found only on super-sized ships.
Cruise Maven’s Insider Tips
- You don’t have to race to the Princess Theater for the production shows to get a good seat. The theater has a clear sight-line without support poles to block your view.
- Want to see areas of the ship that are usually off-limits? Sign up early for the Behind the Scenes Tour to see the engine room, medical center, laundry area and even visit the bridge and meet the captain. Space is limited to this twice-a-cruise event.
- Note that the Sanctuary is reserved in two shifts: 8am-12:30pm and 1pm-5pm or later. Plan ahead and book early, especially for sea days.
Just so you don’t think I’m partial to this ship, I’ll add that some people don’t like the traffic flow from the theater, the smaller-sized public rooms or the fact that the Sanctuary pool (only) is open to the non-paying guest. I’ve learned that it’s impossible to make everyone happy on every cruise ship out there on the seas. It’s a beautiful ship with excellent service, the hot food is served hot and the coffee is just the right strength. What’s not to like?
Fast facts Sailing since: May 2007, refurbished 2009 Size: 113,560 Number of passengers/crew: 3,080/1,142 Number of accessible cabins: 25 Number of Dining options: 11 (7 free) Itineraries: Winter and spring of 2015, the Emerald Princess sails the Caribbean from Houston. When the ship returns from Europe in the fall of 2015, Ft. Lauderdale will be the new homeport for the Emerald Princess.

- Emerald Princess
Fodor’s Expert Review
Ship overview.
One of Princess Cruises’ largest ships, Emerald Princess made her debut in 2007. She follows Princess Cruises’ plan of “evolution” not “revolution” in ship design and features the most popular elements of previously launched vessels in the fleet. Read More
With dramatic atriums and Skywalker’s Nightclub (the spoiler hovering 150 feet above the stern), Caribbean Princess is a supersize version of the older Grand-class vessels with an extra deck of passenger accommodations. Not quite identical to Caribbean Princess, the younger ships in the class, Crown, Emerald, and Ruby Princess have introduced more dining options. Several signature public spaces have been redesigned or relocated on these ships as well—the atrium on Crown, Emerald, and Ruby Princess resembles an open piazza and sidewalk café; Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria is found on a top deck with views on three sides and alfresco dining; and Skywalker’s Disco is forward near the funnel (where it’s topped with a sports court). Inside spaces on all three vessels are quietly neutral, with touches of glamour in the sweeping staircases and marble-floor atriums. Surprising intimacy is achieved by the number of public rooms and restaurants that swallow up passengers.
Princess Cruises may be best known for introducing cruise travel to millions of viewers, when its flagship became the setting for The Love Boat television series in 1977. Since that heady time of small-screen stardom, the Princess fleet has grown both in the number and size of ships. Although most are large in scale, Princess vessels manage to create the illusion of intimacy through the use of color and decor in understated yet lovely public rooms graced by multimillion-dollar art collections.
Princess has also become more flexible; Personal Choice Cruising offers alternatives for open seating dining (when you wish and with whom you please) and entertainment options as diverse as those found in resorts ashore.
Lovely chapels or the wide-open decks are romantic settings for weddings at sea with the captain officiating.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
What to expect on board, staterooms & cabins.
On these ships 80% of the outside staterooms have balconies. The typical stateroom has a seating area with a chair and table; all have ample storage. Minisuites have a separate seating area, a walk-in closet, a combination shower-tub, and a balcony, as well as two TVs. Larger deluxe suites have separate sitting rooms and walk-in closets, some with sofa beds. Two Family suites have interconnecting staterooms with a balcony and sleep up to eight (D105/D101 and D106/D102). Some staterooms can accommodate three and four, and some adjacent cabins can be connected through interior doors or balcony dividers.
Decorated in attractive pastel hues, all cabins have a refrigerator, a hair dryer, a safe, and bathrobes to use during the cruise. Bathrooms have shampoo, lotion, and bath gel.
Twenty-five staterooms are wheelchair accessible on Caribbean Princess and Crown Princess ; Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess have 31.
Food & Drink
Passengers choose between two assigned dinner seatings or open seating; breakfast and lunch are always open seating. Dinner options include reservations-only Sabatini’s and Crown Grill (both with cover). Casual options with a cover charge are The Crab Shack—adjacent to the Lido buffet, which serves shellfish, and The Salty Dog Gastropub, where pub fare includes gourmet burgers. The International Café serves light snacks, panini, and pastries, most of which are complimentary, although there is a charge for specialty coffees. Lido buffets on all ships are almost always open. A pub lunch is served in the Wheelhouse Bar, and a pizzeria and grill offer casual daytime snack choices. The wine bars and ice cream bars charge for artisan cheeses and premium ice cream. Ultimate Balcony Dining and Chef’s Table options are available, as are afternoon tea and 24-hour room service.
Entertainment
Nighttime production shows tend toward musical revues presented in the main show lounge, and performers might include comedians, magicians, jugglers, and acrobats. Live bands play a wide range of musical styles for dancing and listening in the lounges and each ship has a dance club. The cruise director’s staff leads lively evenings of fun with passenger participation. Movies Under the Stars with popcorn and other movie fare are a popular option.
Spa & Fitness
Spas operated by Steiner Leisure offer the standard treatments, including a variety of massages, body wraps, and facials, as well as some designed specifically for men, teens, and couples. Medi-Spa treatments are also available. The spas’ thermal suites have relaxing aromatic wet and dry saunas and heated loungers that are complimentary for those in suites, but a fee is charged for everyone else. Complimentary to all are saunas and steam rooms adjacent to men’s and women’s changing rooms.

Emerald Princess Activities
Entertainment & Activities
Theater and shows on emerald princess.
Though we found nightly entertainment a bit hit or miss, Emerald Princess’ shows get good reviews, and the main theater was packed every night of our sailing.
The 800-passenger-capacity Princess Theater is the ship's main show venue, and it also hosts movies from time to time when not featuring production shows and comedy acts. Seats are plush with spaces to hold drinks (there's waiter service before the shows start).
The theater's main productions are "Voice of the Ocean" and "Magic to Do." We loved "Voice of the Ocean," which offers passengers the chance to take part in auditions early in the cruise, before competing against other shortlisted passengers in a live final in the Princess Theater. The goose bump-inducing final takes place on the last night of the cruise and features three judges (usually a mix of the ship's professional performers and the entertainment director) who critique performances in front of the live audience. The atmosphere during the live final is fully charged but also family orientated. The show is popular with passengers who get behind each performance, clapping and cheering them along. Our tip is to arrive to the theater early to grab the best seats.
"Magic To Do" is the line's Broadway-style production developed by award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz. The concept of the show is intriguing. It includes a musical compilation of Schwartz's work -- featuring songs such as "Magic To Do" from "Pippin"; "Popular" from "Wicked"; and "It'll Be Me" from "Houdini"; plus there's a song created exclusively for the show, "A Little Magic." All are mixed in with a series of magic tricks. Although we struggled to follow the narrative, do check it out for the strong vocal and orchestral performances. The show had the Princess Theater packed.
Daily Things to Do on Emerald Princess
The Piazza is the hub of the ship and a marvelous destination. Located on Deck 5, the bottom deck of the three-story atrium, it serves as an impromptu performance venue and demo area. And, on one of the formal nights, people thronged all three levels to watch the fabled "Champagne pour," a Princess tradition.
Beyond the Piazza the ship has an overwhelming number of entertainment options, plus a variety of lounges, each with a different personality. Take time to read over the daily Emerald Princess activities schedule, which include the fun Princess Pyramid Game Show in the Explorers Lounge, a Trivia Challenge and afternoon movies ("Bridge of Spies" and "The Revenant" were showing on our sailing). There are also ballroom dance classes, Ping-Pong tournaments and Wii Sports challenges, among others, for those seeking more energetic activity.
Nightlife on Emerald Princess
Evening entertainment is as varied as the daytime offerings, with an emphasis on live music, featuring vocal performances and musical melodies.
You'll also find dancing to live music, with the Rhumba Duo in the Wheelhouse Bar, and karaoke and shows such as Marriage Match in Club Fusion. A DJ plays until late in the Skywalkers Nightclub.
Movies Under the Stars , on Deck 16, draws crowds with two showings in the evenings screening a mix of classic and newly released cinematic blockbusters.
Gatsby's Casino, on Deck 6, has an assortment of slots and game tables. During port days, the full casino opens 30 minutes after sailing. Smoking is allowed while playing at some slot machines.
Emerald Princess Bars and Lounges
Vines Wine and Seafood Bar (Deck 5): Vines is a popular meeting spot for pre-dinner drinks and is the ship's dedicated wine bar. Wine lovers can order single glasses or tailored flights -- such as the "Trio of White Grapes" and "Norman Love Confections," which is paired with Norman Love chocolates as part of Princess' Chocolate Journeys package. Made-to-order sushi and tapas are complimentary with any wine purchase.
Speakeasy Cigar Lounge (Deck 6): The ship's smoking lounge is tucked into Gatsby's Casino within a separate room; it offers a comprehensive selection of about 15 cigar varieties.
Good Spirits (Deck 5): This hip cocktail lounge serves classic and creative drinks made by experienced mixologists who give patrons the lowdown of each cocktail while its being crafted.
Crooners Lounge and Bar (Deck 7): Right in the heart of the action, Crooners overlooks the Piazza. It features a vocalist, and specializes in martinis, serving 52 different types.
Club Fusion (Deck 7): The lounge-style Club Fusion, on Deck 7 (it's not a nightclub, despite the name), is busy during the day -- with Ballroom Blitz, line dancing, bingo and Jeopardy -- and into the evening. This venue also hosts Captain's Circle meetings for frequent Princess cruisers.
Explorers Lounge (Deck 7): Many of the ship's day and evening activities take place here. The 250-seat bar features comfy lounge seats and tables, centered around a level stage area.
Wheelhouse Bar (Deck 7): The ship's pub offers a nautical theme with live singers and pianists performing nightly.
Outriggers Bar (Deck 15): Offering some of the best views onboard, Outrigger is an often-undiscovered oasis located at the back of the ship. Grab a bar stool and stare into the ocean over a chilled drink.
Calypso Bar (Deck 15): The ship's lively poolside bar is a hive of activity on sea days, when it can become overcrowded.
Tradewinds Bar (Deck 16): An outdoor bar catering for those who want a drink as they lounge on the sun deck.
Adagio Bar (Deck 16): Located in a light-filled space next to Sabatini’s, Adagio Bar is an elegant, Ritz Carlton-esque venue with a cabaret singer and pianist. It opens in the afternoon.
Skywalkers Nightclub (Deck 18): Buy-one-get-one-free happy hour takes place daily after dinner. There is a live DJ (DJ TJ on our sailing), a dance floor that can feel cozy on busy nights and plenty of large booths and high stool seating. (Minimum age of entry is 18.)
Public Rooms
Pools and hot tubs on emerald princess.
Emerald Princess is home to four pools; all are surrounded by nautical-themed blue and white loungers. Two hot tubs are located by each of the ship's three main pools.
Two pools -- Calypso Reef & Pool and Neptune's Reef & Pool -- are located on the Lido Deck and are where most of the action takes place. The Emerald Princess’ Lido deck layout – which packs in two pools, four hot tubs and multiple drinking and dining venues – means there’s a lot of foot traffic throughout the day. The area can be especially lively on sea days. If you're looking to rest and read a book in peace, this is probably not the place for you.
The Terrace pool (Deck 14) is far more peaceful and relaxed. In fact, many passengers don't even discover it until later in their cruise.
The adult-only Lotus Spa pool, located within the Lotus Spa, offers a more private poolside refuge. Located on Deck 16 it features padded loungers and two hot tubs. Many passengers tend to use this pool before or after a gym session or spa treatment.
Kids also have a paddling pool, located adjacent to Camp Discovery at the back of the ship on Deck 17.
Mini-Golf, Ping-Pong, and Multiuse Sports Court on Emerald Princess
Though Emerald Princess doesn't compete with mega-ships' recreational offerings, it does have a Ping-Pong table, a nine-hole mini-golf course, a lawn area used for bowls (similar to bowling, but outdoors), a croquet area and a court that can be used for basketball, tennis, volleyball and badminton.
Sundecks on Emerald Princess
The ship's sundecks are centered around Decks 15 and 16 and offer ample space for families and individuals to lounge by the pools. There's also a sundeck area by the Terrace pool on Deck 14 and near The Sanctuary , Deck 17.
The Sanctuary -- one of the ship's adult-only spaces – offers half- and full-day passes. Passengers can relax on sumptuous sofas or padded chaise lounges and enjoy massages (for an extra fee) in special outdoor cabanas while "serenity stewards" bob about dispensing chilled face towels, Evian water and healthy drinks, such as citrus water. Be sure to book ahead for this facility on sea days, which is when it tends to be most popular and books up quickly.
Services and Wi-Fi on Emerald Princess
The passenger services and loyalty desks are located within the atrium on Deck 6, while a destination expert mans the Tour Desk on Deck 7. The Emerald Princess Excursions Desk is open daily until dinnertime.
The ship's art gallery is located on Deck 5, the Library on Deck 7, the photography and video Gallery is also on Deck 7 and a conference room can be found on Deck 6 by the Princess Theater.
There are four boutiques on the ship, located on decks 6 and 7. Calypso Cove sells guidebooks, snacks, liquor, local souvenirs, toiletries and Princess logowear, while the upscale Meridian Bay features designer handbags, sunglasses and jewelry. Essence focuses on perfumes and luxury watches, and Facets is all about jewelry.
Self-service laundry rooms are handily located in each deck's cabin corridors, and feature access to an iron and ironing board and token-operated washing machines. Detergent and washing powder can be purchased by a simple swipe of your keycard. Dry cleaning services are also available for an additional fee.
The wedding chapel on Deck 16 hosts marriage ceremonies and vow renewals. It can also be used for conferences and other events.
The ship's 24-hour internet cafe is located on Deck 5. A variety of packages are available for use in the cafe or on individual tablets, smartphones and laptops.
We found Princess' own free app useful for keeping up to date with ship events and activities. It also helped us find our way with a handy map containing a deck plan. The app also lets passengers check their onboard account and access restaurant opening times and menus, along with many other relevant information.
Spa & Fitness
Spa and thermal suite on emerald princess.
Emerald Princess has plenty to offer fans of pampering with its Asian-style Lotus Spa , which spans two decks (16 and 17) and offers a full-range of treatments. They range from a Thai Herbal Poultice massage and Elemis Hot Stone Massage to revitalizing hair and scalp treatments and facials. Also on offer are teeth whitening, acupuncture sessions and more intensive treatments, such as the Ionithermie Cellulite Reduction Program.
Hair treatments ranging from express blow drys to hair coloring are available in the salon. There are also several grooming treatments for men, including an Elemis Express Shave and facials. Couples looking to indulge in treatments together may opt for the couples massage.
The Thermal Suite, with its heated ceramic loungers, tropical rainforest shower, aromatic and steam rooms, is another indulgence, but costs extra to use.
The Lotus Spa & Beauty Salon is open from early in the morning. After our treatment, the spa therapist offered helpful advice on skincare, but on the downside, this was followed with an attempt at upselling the luxury products used in the treatment.
Fitness and Gym on Emerald Princess
Emerald Princess' fitness center features more than 40 cardio machines with TV and USB connections, medicine balls, free weights and weight machines.
Lotus Health & Fitness opens early in the morning, although the treadmills aren't accessible until slightly later because cabins are situated beneath them. Access to treadmills is permitted until after the early dinner shift. For those who prefer to run outside, there's a jogging track, albeit short (it takes 16 laps to reach a mile), which circles the ship's nine-hole putting course Princess Links on Deck 19.
Complimentary stretching, core strength and ab strengthening workouts are available, and, for a per-class fee, passengers can sign up for body sculpting boot camp, yoga, Pilates, TRX and cycling classes.
Is Emerald Princess Family Friendly?
Emerald Princess is well-equipped to serve children of different ages and on our cruise there were certainly many of them to keep occupied. There are three kids' clubs on Deck 17 for children between the ages of three and 17.
Children must be six months old in order to sail. There is no private in-cabin babysitting, but group babysitting is available for a per-hour, per-child fee for children 3 and older.
Some additional services are available, including diaper and baby food in-cabin delivery service, although Princess advises passengers to purchases diapers before their cruise. Passengers should notify the line in advance of traveling if they need cribs. The ship's restaurants are child-friendly, with kids' menus in the main dining rooms, and highchairs are available.
Youngsters have their own splash pool on Deck 17. They must be potty-trained and under the supervision of a parent to use it. And it goes without saying that more generic attractions, such as Movies Under the Stars, hold an instant appeal for kids, too -- but beware of what's being shown, as sometime the language is more suited to an adult audience than to young viewers.
The two main pools on the Lido Deck are popular with children, but they're deep, so kids need to be reasonably good swimmers.
Babies and Toddlers on Emerald Princess
The Treehouse serves kids ages 3 to 7 and offers a range of age-appropriate activities, such as kids-only dance parties, movies and cartoons, ice cream and pizza parties, pajama parties, theme nights, a family art projects.
Tweens and Teens on Emerald Princess
The Lodge is for kids ages 8 to 12 and features activities such as kids-only dinners, dance parties, movies, video games, scavenger hunts, karaoke and talent shows, sports tournaments, Jr.CHEF@Sea cooking classes through the Princess Culinary Academy and theme nights.
The Beach House offers a place for 13- to 17-year-olds to hangout, listen to music and play on game consoles. There's also a selection of card games, board games, Ping-Pong tables and jukeboxes. Teens also have a separate Jacuzzi and sunbathing area. They can even mix their own dance tracks and take hip-hop dance lessons.

The Emerald Princess has 16 different dining options like The Salty Dog Grill , Crown Grill , and The Salty Dog Gastropub . Of those options, 9 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 5 options have an additional fee.
The Discovery Princess has 3 more dining venues. Some of its popular venues are The Salty Dog Grill , International Cafe , and The Salty Dog Gastropub . 11 of these restaurants are complementary and the other 8 have an additional fee.
If you like having a variety of places to eat, the Discovery Princess might be a better choice. It has 19% more dining options than the Emerald Princess.
If you're looking to avoid extra money while on board, the Emerald Princess might be a better choice then the Discovery Princess. More of the dining options are included in the base cruise fare, potentially saving you money.
Restaurants on Princess Cruises Emerald Princess & Discovery Princess
In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Both ships serve the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.
There are also plenty of bars available on these ships. Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.
Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day for 7 days in a pool, a cruise isn't for you. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.
The Princess Cruises Emerald Princess has a total of 5 pools and 7 hot tubs. Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.
Princess Cruises Discovery Princess has fewer pools than the Emerald Princess and more hot tubs. There are more exclusive pools and hot tubs on the Discovery Princess. If you don't mind paying for exclusive access to areas in order to have less crowds, this might be a better choice.
Both ships have lots of activities to keep you busy throughout your cruise. Below you'll see a list of some of the major features on these ships. On the Emerald Princess, 80% of the activities below are included in the cruise fare. On the Discovery Princess, only 73% of the activities are included, meaning you might spend more money while on board.
Princess Cruises is a premium cruise line. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.
Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year. Typically newer ships cost more, so a cruise on Princess Cruises Emerald Princess will likely be cheaper than on Princess Cruises Discovery Princess.
Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.
Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.
The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Princess Cruises ship.
Princess Cruises offers two packages to bundle onboard expenses. The Princess Plus package includes daily gratuities, the basic beverage package, 2 fitness classes, 2 casual dining meals, and internet for $60 per day per guest. The Princess Premier package upgrades to the premiere beverage package, wifi for up to 4 devices per guest, two specialty dining meals, unlimited casual dining meals, unlimited fitness classes, and a photo package for $80 per guest per day.

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship
Cheers broke out on Holland America Line’s Koningsdam ship when the total solar eclipse began on Monday.
Off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, passengers were perched on loungers, reclining on beach towels and lining the railings of Deck 14 with cameras on tripods at the ready. When the sliver of fiery orange that remained of the sun disappeared, a black circle ringed by white light took its place. Passengers applauded the moment they'd been awaiting since the ship departed from San Diego on Friday.
The sunny, 72-degree weather – quintessential cruise weather – gave way to chilly wind and late morning’s best impression of sunset. The horizon line glowed orange in the dusky sky.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
Cruise ships can help take guests to the path of totality for eclipses, allowing passengers to get a prime viewing spot and make a vacation of it.
What is a total solar eclipse?
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the face of the sun as it moves between the sun and Earth.
While the sun is about 400 times bigger than the moon, the moon is roughly 400 times closer to Earth. “In the past, the moon was much closer, and in the future, the moon will be much further away,” said Adam Burgasser, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego, and director of the Cool Star Lab, who served as an onboard expert during the cruise. “And so we're in a special time, which, of course, lasts for billions of years, where it's set up just right to block out the sun.”
Total solar eclipses take place about every 18 months on average, but the last one visible from the U.S. was in 2017 .
The phenomenon creates a multi-sensory experience, with a cold front moving in ahead of the eclipse. “You block the sun, and it gets cold,” said Burgasser. “It’s actually just that simple. And it's slow enough that the atmosphere can react.”
Plants and animals respond, too: Birds often begin to chirp, plants may close up, and nocturnal will come out. “It’s kind of an all-around-you experience where it's not just the fact that the sun has been blocked that’s so fascinating, but just the effect it has on the entire environment.” Those effects weren’t easily discernible on Koningsdam, though, which was about 150 miles from shore.
Nicole Chaput, a 57-year-old passenger from Calgary in Canada, said partial and total eclipses are “totally different.”
“I heard someone describe it as being partly pregnant,” she said. “You can’t do it. There’s no comparison.”
What makes a cruise a good place to see an eclipse?
Bad weather can wreck even the best-laid viewing plans. If a city in the path of totality has overcast skies, it can be tough to quickly move to an alternate site.
“If you're on a cruise ship and a little bit farther to the east or a little bit farther to the west along the path, there's clear sky, the ship can move,” said Dan Jarrell, who was on the cruise with his wife, Kay, and friends. The Washington, D.C.-area resident has seen solar eclipses with friends during two other sailings, including on Holland America’s Veendam in 1998.
“If you're on land and there's not a road there, you’d better have a tank,” Jarrell said.
That’s where a cruise ship comes in handy. “Having the ability to map out based on what the current weather is where you can catch the eclipse, and having a range over the course of the ocean where you could chase that a little bit is certainly helpful,” Burgasser added.
Capt. Ane Smit, Master aboard Holland America’s Zaandam for the viewing, said the ship can move at a maximum of 20 knots, so the crew needs to scout out the conditions with enough time to move as needed.
“If it's not good enough, we really need to start finding another spot because we are not the quickest vehicle, of course, to be driving around, but we have the luxury of being able to go in any direction without any restriction,” he said. “It’s a pretty wide highway that we have.”
The view of the horizon also allows passengers to “see that shadow coming in and leaving more so than you can in a topographical area,” said Burgasser. Being in the ocean away from city lights is also helpful for seeing stars and other parts of the sky usually only visible at night.
The cruise line also made the practicalities of watching an eclipse easier: eclipse glasses were distributed to guests’ staterooms and Burgasser guided guests through the event via the ship’s speaker system, before and after totality.
More eclipse cruises on the horizon
If you missed your chance to see it this time or want another go, Holland America has more eclipse-viewing opportunities on the books.
“Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's Vice President of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, said in an email. Details have not yet been released.
Other cruise lines offer similar opportunities as well. Princess Cruises' Emerald Princess was near Koningsdam on Monday.
Chaput, the Canadian passenger, said she’s been “chasing” total solar eclipses since seeing her first one in 1991. Monday’s eclipse marked her seventh viewing and second on a cruise ship.
“I think it’s just such an amazing natural phenomenon,” she said. “It’s seeing science in action.”
