Best Overall: Veken Packing Cubes
Not only do the Veken Packing Cubes have 13,000 reviews and a 4.7-star rating on Amazon, but they're also super affordable (and often discounted), making them a traveler favorite. "I never thought I needed packing cubes until I tried out the Veken set and realized how much easier packing (and unpacking!) could be," says Catriona Kendall , associate editor of Travel at U.S. News. "I usually have trouble staying organized, but I've taken these cubes everywhere from weekends away to a campervan vacation in New Zealand, and with all the different pieces in the set I'm finally able to keep my belongings in order."
The eight-piece set includes four mesh packing cubes plus four bags designated for dirty laundry, a pair of shoes, toiletries and miscellaneous small items. The Veken Packing Cubes are available in a dozen different colors.
Price: $23.99 or less
Best Compression: Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set
"I swear by the Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set," says Christine Sarkis, editor in chief at FamilyVacationist. "They're lightweight, you can see into them without needing to unzip them, and the fabric texture isn't slippery so as you're wedging carefully rolled items of clothing into them, they don't pop out." Made from recycled materials, these durable, water-resistant packing cubes are also backed by Eagle Creek's lifetime warranty. "I'm going on 20 years with mine!" says travel expert Candice Criscione of Mom in Italy. The Pack-It Reveal Cube Set includes three packing cubes in different sizes.
Price: $40 or less
Best for Backpacking: Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Compression Cube Set
The Pack-It Isolate Compression Cube Set from Eagle Creek comes highly recommended by frequent travelers, particularly for backpacking trips. Available in a set of two or three, these packing cubes are lightweight yet durable, with self-repairing zippers (standard on all Eagle Creek packing cubes) designed to withstand overpacking. The Isolate packing cubes are also machine-washable – a rarity for packing cubes.
Caroline Teel, managing editor at SmarterTravel, uses packing cubes specifically for adventure travel and appreciates that these compression bags are pre-treated with an anti-microbial agent that prevents odors. "Having used them on an eight-day hiking trip on Mount Kilimanjaro, I can confirm they work in that department!" she says. She adds that while she's tested a variety of packing cubes, she always comes back to Eagle Creek.
Price: $44.95 or less
Best for Formalwear: Eagle Creek Pack-It Starter Set
Slightly different from the Pack-It Reveal and Pack-It Isolate, the Pack-It Starter Set includes a large mesh folder with folder board for minimizing wrinkled garments – a good alternative to a traditional garment bag . The folder can hold up to 12 dress shirts, dresses, and the like, making this set an ideal choice for business travel or cruise vacations with formal nights. The other two cubes (small and medium-sized) are ideal for casual clothing, undergarments and accessories. These packing cubes are also treated with an anti-microbial agent to block odor-causing bacteria and – sans the folding board – they are water-resistant and machine washable.
Price: $54.95 or less
Best for Kids: EzPacking Clear Packing Cubes
Courtesy of EzPacking
"My kids prefer these clear packing cubes," says Sarkis. "They're a little deeper and more rigid, and you can see everything in them, which helps kids pack for themselves and stay organized on the road." Even if you travel with little ones , you may find these clear packing cubes useful for organizing baby gear and locating essentials on the go. The EzPacking Clear Packing Cubes come in a set of four and are available in a variety of colors.
Price: $56.99 or less
Best Size Options: Tripped Travel Gear Compression Cubes
Courtesy of Tripped Travel Gear
Many travelers like the compression cubes offered by Tripped Travel Gear, a small business owned by a globetrotting couple (and their adorable dog). Their innovative luggage line includes a two-, six- and seven-piece set of packing cubes; the seven-piece set is especially noteworthy for its variety of cubes, which includes a shoe bag, laundry bag and a tube-shaped cube that's useful for storing electronics such as hair irons.
These packing cubes also feature an external pocket. "You can use this pocket to store clothing as you use it, to keep the clean and dirty clothes separate," says Andrew Uyal of the travel blog Flights and Footsteps. The packing cubes are available in solid colors as well as national park and other travel-themed prints.
Best for Style: Lug Compression Packing Cubes
Courtesy of Lug
Luggage expert and senior editor of Travel at U.S. News, Rachael Hood , loves the fun colors and patterns – which include tartan plaid, polka dots and florals – on these packing cubes by Lug. The lightweight cubes can store a lot before compressing down to just one inch in thickness, and they each feature a carrying handle. "They make packing so easy," says Hood. "I can fit six to eight tops in the larger one and the smaller cube is ideal for socks and other accessories." She adds that these packing cubes make the perfect travel gift .
Price: $38 or less
How to Use Packing Cubes
- Pack a color-coded set for each person in your group: " We have different color packing cubes for each member of the family so when we open the suitcase, it's easy for everyone to grab their own color and get organized in the hotel room or wherever," says travel writer Terry Ward, who is frequently on the go with her family. She also notes that her family is able to save on luggage fees by using packing cubes in a single checked suitcase .
- Consider buying more than one set: Packing cubes are also useful for organizing toiletries, shoes , travel adapters and cords, and other miscellaneous items.
- Categorize each packing cube: Pack each cube by activity or clothing type, such as activewear, swimwear and underwear.
- Pack with the mesh side facing up: If you buy mesh packing cubes, this packing tip will help you easily identify the contents of each packing cube (which can be especially useful in the event you need to quickly locate items while at the airport).
- Roll your clothing: Many travelers swear by rolling their clothing instead of folding it in their luggage, noting this tactic saves space and minimizes wrinkles. Use the same method when placing items into your packing cubes.
- Use them for dirty laundry: If your packing cubes don't have pockets for dirty laundry like the Tripped Travel Gear bags do, you can still use them to contain dirty laundry; just avoid using mesh cubes if you're concerned about the smell of soiled clothing pervading your bag.
- Take them with you on errands: Packing cubes are useful for everyday outings, too. "I use a smaller packing cube to keep diapers, wipes and a changing pad handy in my backpack when we're out exploring," says Criscione.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most travelers and travel experts agree packing cubes are worth buying – especially considering there are so many affordable, quality options on the market. Because they're designed to save space, they can help you avoid unnecessary luggage fees. Plus, they can be used universally in everything from your luggage set to your weekender bag and even a backpack .
Yes, packing cubes save space by organizing clothing and accessories into individual compartments that neatly fit inside luggage. To maximize space in your luggage, choose compression packing cubes, which eliminate extra air and zip nearly flat.
Compression packing cubes zip nearly flat once packed, while traditional packing cubes maintain their shape and fit neatly into your luggage like pieces in a puzzle. While the decision between packing cubes and compression bags is ultimately a matter of personal preference, most travel experts agree compression packing cubes are best.
Rolling your clothing will help to maximize space and prevent wrinkles, regardless of whether or not you use packing cubes.
Packing cubes are reusable (and in many cases, washable), making them a more economical and sustainable alternative to Ziploc bags.

I’ve Been Testing Travel Gear for Years — Here Are the Best Prime Day Deals Worth Buying Today
In this article
- Carry on luggage
- Checked luggage
- Accessories
- Gadgets and tech
Amazon’s annual two-day Prime Day sale is entering its final hours, so this is your last opportunity to save money on luggage and any other trip essentials you require for upcoming summer travel. The discounts, open only to Amazon Prime members, apply to suitcases from trusted brands like Samsonite and Travelpro, as well as travel products like noise-canceling headphones , backpacks and cross-body bags, and packing cubes .
As the Strategist’s travel-gear writer, I’m recommending products here that I and other staffers have personally vetted or heard about from the frequent travelers we talk to all the time. These include a Samsonite suitcase set for under $200, our favorite travel steamer (that’s compatible with different voltages worldwide), and our favorite gadget for pairing AirPods with in-flight entertainment systems. Alongside big-ticket items, I’ve taken note of a few smaller gadgets that would also make great gifts for frequent travelers , like the bendy phone stand I use to watch movies on budget flights and AirTags for tracking luggage once you say good-bye to it on the conveyor belt.
I’ll be online until this evening, finding new deals and updating this post as products go in and out of stock. My fellow writers will be doing the same, and there’s a handy hub where you can find all the best things we’ve found on sale during Prime Day , including kitchen deals , tech deals , and fashion deals . Other retailers have some big sales this week too — which is why we’ve also got a non–Prime Day deals roundup . But if all that gets too overwhelming, you can see only our absolute favorite deals in our guide to the 45 very best Prime Day deals, according to the Strategist writers .
The Deals I Personally Think Are the Best
If you’re being discerning with your Prime Day spending, there are a few standout items on this list that I think would be worthwhile purchases for anyone who travels frequently. There’s lots of great luggage on sale, but of particular note is this soft suitcase from TravelPro that’s almost 30 percent off and guaranteed to easily last a decade or longer as well as a set of three hard-sided suitcases from my favorite luggage brand, Samsonite — a fantastic bargain at under $300. Also worth a shout-out are the cheap and effective blackout sleep mask I’ve used on long-haul flights to Australia and Asia, now even cheaper, and two bigger-ticket items that rarely go on sale: Cadence’s completely leakproof travel containers and Apple’s covetable AirPods Max headphones. Finally, there’s a solid discount on a gadget that will pair those headphones via Bluetooth to your plane’s in-flight entertainment.
Carry-on luggage deals
Samsonite is my suitcase brand of choice; I purchased mine secondhand many years ago and have yet to see any particular signs of wear and tear.
Packing experts praise this personal-item-size suitcase with snap-off spinner wheels that can slide miraculously into the cruelest of baggage sizers. Measuring 18 x 14 x 8 inches, its rectangular shape maximizes space and lets you use packing cubes.
Ready to join the soft-luggage revolution? Travelpro’s Maxlite carry-on makes our best rolling-luggage list because it’s made from easy-to-repair nylon and has just two encased wheels that won’t snap off. It expands up to two inches and has multiple compartments for stuffing last-minute purchases into.
If you prefer a four-wheel spinner suitcase, though, go with the Travelpro Tourlite.
Travelpro’s top-of-the-line Platinum Elite range is also nicely discounted for Prime Day.
Or here’s a classy-looking hard suitcase if you just can’t stand the look of a soft one. It expands easily and has spinner wheels for cruising toward the gate.
Checked luggage deals
For bigger trips, there’s no shame in checking a bag. And this roomy expandable fabric one will fit so many extra souvenirs.
And here’s the matching Delsey checked suitcase at a very reasonable price.
Luggage set deals
Two Samsonite suitcases for under $200.
Three Samsonite suitcases for under $300.
This set is made from slightly thicker polycarbonate for extra durability.
Soft bag deals
This rolling duffel would also forgive overpacking and is suitable for rugged trips.
I spotted a few Herschel bags on sale, including this nice minimal-looking backpack.
A non-dorky fanny pack for your passport, phone, and snacks for under $50.
Travelon makes some of our favorite totes and cross-body bags for travel , and this one fits a lot of smart storage pockets into a surprisingly stylish design. The bag’s fabric is slashproof, so you can keep your phone and passport safe during more adventurous trips.
Jump on the black nylon backpack trend for just $50.
Packing accessory deals
Cadence’s cute yet practical capsules are some of my favorites for decanting toiletries . They don’t go on sale too often, and they make great gifts.
I’m obsessed with these earplugs that actually stay in your ears but are also extremely easy to remove. They’re also great for concerts.
An excellent sleep mask that I’ve used on several long-haul flights to Australia.
If you prefer to take your own purse on vacation rather than investing in a brand-new bag with a luggage sleeve, this clever buckle will secure it to your suitcase handle.
This bendy sheet of foam weighs almost nothing, can be slipped easily into any bag , and contorts into a phone or tablet holder that’s perfect for watching TV shows on budget flights without fancy seat-back TV screens. I use mine at home , too.
Travel-content creator Jewels Rhode told me these affordable compression packing cubes are very reliable.
You’ve got packing cubes, but do you own shoe bags? I like how these separate each shoe to prevent scuffing.
The packable scale that we’ve been recommending for years. Pay $10 now, save hundreds of dollars worth of overweight-baggage fees in the future.
A mesh travel bassinet that folds down flat for easy storage on top of the packing cubes in your suitcase.
This slim and stashable water filter is as simple as it gets — you literally use it as a straw.
Gadget and tech deals
Conair’s travel steamer has the useful feature of working with 120-volt U.S. outlets and 220-volt outlets, which are more common worldwide. My fellow Strategist writer Erin Schwartz says it heats up in about 36 seconds and emits a fine, gauzy hiss of steam that unwrinkles a pair of wool pants easily.
I am currently using a pair of these headphones to completely block the noise of my very angry-sounding window air-conditioning unit. They’re also fantastic for plane engine noise.
Bose’s non-Ultra QuietComfort headphones also have excellent noise cancellation and are considerably cheaper.
While I’m a Bose girl, our tech writer actually prefers Sony’s noise-canceling headphones, which are even more affordable.
Apple’s much-coveted AirPods Max headphones almost never go on sale, so here’s your chance.
Or travel light with a set of noise-canceling AirPods Pro. (Just note that these are the second-generation AirPods Pro, which lack the MagSafe wireless charging, higher IP rating , and spatial audio that the third-generation AirPods have.)
If you’ve already got a preferred pair of headphones, this clever Bluetooth gizmo will help you pair them to the in-flight entertainment system.
This is the most compact Kindle and the best option for travel, according to our tech writer , Jordan McMahon.
Tuck this tracker into your luggage and experience immediate peace of mind.
For those who are Team Apple, AirTags are also on sale.
This is our best overall portable charger , and I’ve found that it’s a game changer for travel because you can use it as a laptop charger when plugged into a wall — which means one less item to pack.
An all-in-one charging cable from our Strategist Travel 100 that will reduce the chances of tangled-up tech.

8 lightweight travel musts that won't hog room in your carry-on, starting at $9
Keep trips streamlined with a compact kindle, an ultra-small phone charger, a slim travel wallet and more..
There are so many positives that come with traveling. Visiting new places, trying new foods, getting a break from your day-to-day routine — what's not to love?
Miikare Airplane Travel Essentials Phone Holder
Fyy travel cable organizer, bagail 4-piece compression packing cube set, zero grid travel wallet, apple airtag, twelve south airfly se bluetooth wireless audio transmitter, amazon kindle, twelve south butterfly 2-in-1 usb-c magsafe charging station.
At the same time, it's hard to ignore that traveling is a luxury that costs a pretty penny, especially when you add checked bags to the equation. To keep baggage fees down and minimize time at the airport, some folks bypass the check-in counter altogether and just bring a carry-on . Of course, if you go this route, you have to carefully choose what you pack — the smaller and lighter, the better.
With this in mind, we've rounded up eight of our favorite slim, trim products that come in handy without taking up a ton of space. For instance, instead of bringing that book that you wanted to read on the plane, opt for a Kindle e-reader . It's thin enough to slip into almost any pocket in your bag. Store charging cables in this palm-sized $9 organizer . And while you may not be able to bring your bulky nightstand charging station, this compact option juices up both your phone and AirPods or Apple Watch at the same time. Check out all eight products below and start traveling light.
No in-flight entertainment is definitely a bummer. And sometimes, the entertainment they do provide just doesn't measure up. Here's your genius plan B: This palm-sized phone holder lets you prop up your device to watch your favorite shows or movies hands-free and at eye level. It easily attaches to your tray table or luggage handle, so it's a no-brainer, space-saving add-on.
Flight crew members even use it for travel, and then keep using it once they're back home. "As a commuting flight attendant, [this] comes in very handy!" one reviewer said . "At home, I like it propped up on the counter."
I travel with a lot of tech — laptop, tablet, smartwatch, over-ear headphones. Yes, I have a lot of stuff to charge. In true type-A fashion, I was thrilled to find this $9 case a few years ago. It has just enough compartments to keep all of the cables for my devices neatly stowed, organized and easily accessible. What I love most, though, is that it doesn't take up much space in my carry-on.
Almost 17,000 Amazon shoppers are big fans too. "I was able to fit more than four different charging cables, a power bank and a small power brick," one five-star reviewer wrote before co-signing my rave review, saying it "doesn't take [up] much space at all."
Travel experts and frequent fliers say packing cubes are one of the easiest ways to stay organized and free up space in your luggage when bopping between locations. One thing you definitely don't want to do? Overpack your carry-on. These compression packing cubes keep you organized and flatten bulky clothing to give you more space in your luggage for other things.
"I used these cubes on a recent vacation and they worked great!" one impressed shopper wrote . "[I packed] 10 days of clothes in my carry-on. I had an extra cube left over and took it along and used it for T-shirts I bought on my trip."

One of my secrets to staying calm when traveling is to stay as organized as possible — and this palm-sized passport wallet has just enough compartments to keep important documents within reach. It's slim enough to slip into any pocket and has slots for a passport, credit cards, a boarding pass and even a pen. Best of all, there's RFID blocking built in to protect sensitive personal data. This passport wallet also comes with two recovery tags from ReturnMe , the world's largest lost and found company.
One pilot gave it a glowing review. "Got this to hold my important things I need to fly — certificate, medical [card] and passport," the travel pro wrote . "They also offer you a lost and found reward so if you lose it, it can be easily returned to you and the company provides you a reward."
While some travelers use AirTags to track their checked luggage when they hand it over at bag drop, I also toss one in my carry-on in the event that there's no more overhead space on the plane, forcing me to gate check it. With an AirTag, I'm able to track my bag, no matter where I am in the world, from the "Find My" app on my smartphone.
"This is my third AirTag," one traveler wrote . "I keep one in my suitcase/carry-on/purse whenever I travel. It's how I knew American Airlines left my bag at the airport and how I knew Delta sent it on a flight before the one I was on. ... It's worth the peace of mind."
This is one of my favorite tiny travel buddies. On certain airlines, the in-flight entertainment is pretty top-tier, with recent releases that aren't even available on streaming services. But when I use those low-quality wired earbuds that plug into the seat's headphone jack, I hear the plane's engine more than the movie dialogue. This Bluetooth transmitter, which is basically the size of an AirPods case, allows me to tune in with my noise-canceling headphones. Also, setting it up took me maybe five seconds.
"It was [a] game-changer for a nine-hour flight," one impressed Amazon reviewer wrote . "The free earbuds they hand out hurt my ears after a while and don't cancel out the loud noise of the plane. This device was exactly what I was looking for."
Reading a book is one of the simplest ways to pass time on a long flight. There's one problem, though: A book can take up so much valuable space in your carry-on or personal item. A Kindle e-reader lets you download as many books as you'd like, and since it's almost paper-thin, you won't sacrifice much space in your bag. Also, if you're flying at night, you won't need the overhead light to read since the screen is illuminated and glare-free.
"I love this thing!" gushed one shopper . "It's also super thin and light, which means I can throw it in my bag and not even notice it's there. And since it's waterproof, I don't have to panic if I'm caught in the rain or if I want to read by the pool."
This is the newest addition to my travel bag, and I'm still amazed by its size and practicality. At home, I use a bulky two-in-one charging station that gives my phone and Apple Watch some juice when I'm asleep. Since it's too cumbersome to take with me when I travel, I found this gizmo, which does the same thing in a compact package that folds up smaller than my palm. Can you tell how impressed I am?
It supports MagSafe charging and nightstand mode on both the Apple Watch and iPhone, so you'll be able to see the full-screen clock on both devices while they charge. Keep in mind, though, that this isn't a portable charger and needs to be plugged into an outlet to work.
"This charger is small, lightweight, but still entirely functional," one five-star reviewer wrote . "It is one less thing to worry about when packing."
If you have Amazon Prime , you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here . (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)

I Fit 2 Weeks' Worth of Clothes in a Carry-on Thanks to These Packing Cubes — and They’re on Sale
Score my travel hack for never checking a bag at a major discount during Amazon Prime Day.
Hannah Freedman is a travel writer and commerce content strategist for Dotdash Meredith. She has visited more than 50 countries (and counting) and has contributed to outlets including Vanity Fair , Travel + Leisure , Thrillist , and more.
Travel + Leisure / Francesca Fasciglione
Want to hear a fun fact? In over 30 years of traveling, I’ve only ever checked a bag three times. I’d rather hit the ground running than wait around in check-in lines, at baggage claim, or, worst of all, have to deal with a dreaded lost suitcase when I arrive at my destination.
While I’m a savvy traveler who has my packing lists down to an art and knows how to maximize space in my lightweight carry-on , my skills were really put to the test last year when I needed to pack for a 15-day trip through multiple climates without checking a bag. After reading numerous five-star reviews and seeing what Travel + Leisure editors had to say, I ordered the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes 4-piece Set , a flight attendant-approved set named T+L 's best compression packing cubes of 2024 — and it just went on sale for $20 during Amazon Prime Day .

While I was initially a bit skeptical, the $20 price point helped convince me they were worth trying — that, and a review from an Amazon shopper dubbing them "a godsend for anyone who loves to travel light." And after using these on multiple lengthy trips in the past year, I have to agree. I was legitimately shocked when I put these to the test and saw just how much each cube could fit and then how much they compressed down.
The Gonex set comes with four compression packing cubes that gradually go up in size from small to extra large. Using just the medium-sized cube of the set, I was able to fit two sets of pajamas, six tank tops, and three T-shirts. I added each article of clothing into the cube while it was expanded and then zipped the fully stuffed bag up. Then, the magic happened when I closed the second expanded zipper and watched as everything compressed together. When all was said and done, the cube was less than 1 inch thick.
Moving right along, I used the largest cube to pack my comfy pants, button-down shirts, and thin cardigans, while the smaller-sized ones were just right for all my socks, underwear, bras, and extras like swimsuits and scarves.
What’s more, not only did these help me easily fit everything I needed for my original 15-day trip, but I’ve since used them for a 10-day trip across Italy, a weeklong beach getaway, and a long weekend trip to Los Angeles. Each time, I’ve only packed my carry-on and had no issues when it came to fitting everything I needed.
I love using these top-tier packing cubes even when I don’t necessarily need the compression aspect because they also make organizing a breeze. I take a small piece of tape and write in Sharpie what’s inside each one so I can quickly grab and unpack just the packing cube I need instead of rifling through my entire suitcase. Plus, they’re super handy for pulling out and putting straight into drawers. The nylon material is also easy to wipe down and clean, so you could even use these for toiletry items to help keep them separate.
The only downside is that since everything gets compressed together and rolled up, clothes can come out more wrinkly than when laid flat across your suitcase. I usually throw a travel-sized wrinkle-release spray in my suitcase and it quickly takes care of this problem for me – no ironing needed.
I now own two sets of these packing cubes so I can mix and match various sizes to my packing needs, and for those who want even more flexibility, there’s a six-piece set that includes a shoe bag and a clear toiletry bag. The four-piece Gonez packing cube set is available in 12 different colors, ranging from black and cream to turquoise and hot pink. Right now, during Amazon Prime Day , they’re on sale for $20, thanks to an additional on-site coupon, which puts them at just $5 per cube. But the deal ends on Wednesday, July 17, so hurry and snag these genius compression packing cubes while they’re on sale.
