What Travelers Say About Their Alaska Trips with AdventureSmith

Alaska has been in our minds for years... My 60th birthday seemed a great reason to make it happen! The friendliness and responsiveness of AdventureSmith staff when I first sent in an inquiry really sealed the deal. I cannot say enough about Tracie's food on the boat. It is truly some of the best food I have eaten anywhere! She also baked me an incredible birthday cake!

Had an absolutely amazing time! Staff were fabulous, energetic, passionate and kept us busy and safe at all times. We chose a small boat trip as we wanted to get as close as possible to Alaska...

The trip was FABULOUS! The boat was very nice, the crew and guides exceptional! All together a wonderful adventure!

The spontaneous whale watching, nearly every day at some point, made the trip memorable. That the captain could slow down and maneuver in an area to extend our viewing is not something that could happen on an aircraft-carrier-sized cruise ship.

Trip was great. The crew was amazing, and the food was a very nice surprise. I wanted to hike as much as I could, and this ship seemed to meet that.

Exceeded expectations. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

I truly enjoyed the whole trip but our time on the Westward was the one I'll remember most. It combined so many things I love: hiking, nature, kayaking, wildlife, wonderful people, and amazing food! And I learned so much. I loved the small size of the group. We went places and did things that no larger boat/group could do. Very special! The two very long days of travel to get to Kantishna was probably my least favorite. The bus ride into the park was beautiful and our guide was fabulous. We were just tired from traveling so long on the plane the day before and getting up early to catch the bus to the park entrance. Again, I don't think we could've really done it differently, coming from Tampa. Once we got to Kantishna, all was well. The six others on board the Westward were very congenial and we made a great group! Thank you for suggesting this itinerary. We got to see exactly what we had hoped for when we first started contemplating a trip to Alaska. I will remember it forever! Alaska has been in our minds for years but we had never made it there. My 60th birthday seemed a great reason to make it happen! The friendliness and responsiveness of AdventureSmith staff when I first sent in an inquiry really sealed the deal.

Accommodations Review

The Hilton in Anchorage was okay - seems to need a facelift soon but we weren't there long. The cabin at Kantishna was vey roomy and the beds were really comfortable. We had everything we needed. The Sheraton in Juneau was very comfortable and the staff very friendly. The Westward cabins are so efficient! I was amazed at how much room we had to put our clothes and other items. It was perfect.

Meals Review

I cannot say enough about Tracie's food on the boat. It is truly some of the best food I have eaten anywhere! She also baked me an incredible birthday cake! The food at Kantishna was fine. I know they are very remote, but I was dying for some local fish! The service was good and I enjoyed sitting with other guests. We met some really interesting people.

Crew & Guides Review

Mary was our favorite at Kantishna. She was so enthusiastic and led us on a wonderful 7 mile hike to Skyline Ridge (I think). She knew so much about the plants and all of the wildlife. All four of the folks aboard the Westward were exceptional. Don't know how I can say enough. Bill, Tracie, Kristin, and Liam. All were people I am very happy to have met.

Transportation Review

I really appreciated the detailed itinerary which I carried with me. Knowing exactly which dome train to check in to, for instance, was wonderful and eased any anxiety I may have had about being in the right place. Same with the buses we were on. I think our flights worked out well, although I am now not a big fan of the Seattle airport - it was a zoo! Glad we arrived early for our flight home. I appreciated the cabs being included as well.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

I felt that the support from AdventureSmith while planning the trip and before leaving was outstanding. I had all of the information that I needed. I felt that everyone involved was so friendly and quick to respond to any questions I had. We got wonderful, complete info about packing, etc., and felt very well-prepared.

Had an absolutely amazing time! Staff were fabulous, energetic, passionate and kept us busy and safe at all times. Enjoyed all the activities and the variety to choose from. We attached the trip to a Canadian holiday so Alaska was the perfect choice. We chose a small boat trip as we wanted to get as close as possible to Alaska and were after the adventure activities.

Only downside for us was cabin noise from engine. Difficult to hear TV.

We loved everything.

All guides were fabulous. Dawn did her role very efficiently. We had Cailie and Kate the majority of the time and found them knowledgeable, efficient and genuinely wanted us to have the best time of our lives and we did. Lexie was fabulous getting us places on the skiff. All staff were amazing.

Would tell people it’s the only way to see the inside passage!

  • Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise with 2 Days in Glacier Bay
  • Camp Denali Adventure

The trip was FABULOUS!  The boat was very nice, the crew and guides exceptional!  All together a wonderful adventure! Polar Bear Plunge in front of a glacier! Kayaking and watching a mink family eat crab just feet away from us! Seeing an actual wolf in the wild! Watching Humpback Whales bubble feed!

Ship, cabins, common areas, equipment all very well maintained. Everything was great.

The food was fine, but nothing to write home about.  Long lines at buffets. Seated dinner service a little slow.

All the guides were above and beyond exceptional.  Their knowledge and ENTHUSIASM was impressive - whether talking about lichen or slugs, the weather, the tides, or a Grizzly, they were all so enthusiastic about everything. Maybe even more so than the guests! They were also amazingly organized. Getting 10-20 day trips organized and punctual can't be easy. The skiff captains and guides worked remarkably well keeping everything running like a German train (super efficient and punctual, that is)!

Aaron Gaines did an incredible job helping me book the trip, sending me ship, itinerary and flight information. Excellent job of communications. He was also very enthusiastic about making this a wonderful trip for us! You'd think he was going himself!

Don't expect to go shopping on this trip (except in the towns where you embark/disembark), this is an ADVENTURE and EXPLORATION experience!  You will travel to remote areas to see whales, porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals, bears, or maybe a wolf, or some mink!  You will walk, hike, kayak and skiff ride! On this cruise you will get close to nature and feed your soul!

  • Northern Passages with Glacier Bay & Sitka

The advance literature proclaimed the company sought to exceed our expectations, and they all did in every category. From the ship, the southern Alaska passages, the activities, the Un-Cruise company, down to every individual crew member, every part of this "adventure" was much better than we had imagined. As one example, we were surprised almost immediately buy how engaging and helpful the crew was. Not once did we see a crew member annoyed by a needy passenger or a question asked too many times. That must be a company goal!

The Wilderness Explorer was great. Although the cabins were small, we had what we needed and the public spaces were sized to handle the passengers comfortably, and there were so many activities we didn't spend much time in our rooms. The ship cruised smoothly in the inland passages, and even an overnight relocation cruise didn't interrupt sleep. Most enjoyed any kayaking activity off the boat. The launch/retrieve platform is an awesome modification, and probably what makes launching 10-15 kayaks in a short time possible. We greatly appreciated being able to rent the slogging boots on the boat.

No complaints whatsoever. We even had a pastry chef on our ship.

Might be tempted to say AdventureSmith over prepared us, given the extraordinarily good weather we had. We had only one day of rain in the entire week, and then it was in the 50's. Almost 70 in Glacier Bay for glacier kayaking. Personal to Aaron Gaines:  Thanks for the little 50th anniversary gift you had left in our cabin. On that Friday (Aug 7) we got to celebrate by kayaking in front of a glacier, on a beautiful day, with ORCAS swimming about a quarter mile away! Priceless!

  • Wilderness Explorer
  • UnCruise Adventures

Trip was great. Could not have asked for better weather. The crew was amazing, and the food was a very nice surprise (very accommodating, plentiful and tasted great). The whole group got a long really well. I wanted to hike as much as I could, and this ship seemed to meet that.

[I most enjoyed] the longer excursions (e.g. full day hike) and kayaking (a first for me). St. James Bay was extremely beautiful, and I'm glad we spent the whole day there. Hiking Mt. Riley in Haines was also a highlight (challenging hike, with a rewarding view up top). Can't say I enjoyed any of it the least, but if I had to choose, there were two days where we really only had one off the boat activity. Days when we got off twice were much more enjoyable. More full day excursions should be offered when the boat is anchored in the same place all day.

Ship was tiny, but had everything that was needed.

All of the dairy free options were great and I really appreciated the effort the galley staff and stewards put in.  Harry's soups were great. More than enough food to keep you full all day.

Captain Andy was a great leader (fun, enthusiastic, knowledgeable) and his leadership showed throughout the crew.

Excellent, I had everything I needed.

Exceeded expectations. Expedition lead, Rab, led a great team. All were knowledgeable and great teachers. Plus all were accessible throughout the trip. Betty Lou and Linda were particularly outstanding but all were great. James added his diving and photography expertise as did Drew and Brian. Eryn was an outstanding naturalist and patient teacher. Captain and crew were friendly and helpful. Fabulous in all regards. Rab really set the tone and having the experience of Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn, and the others enhanced the experience. The handling of bear confrontation on shore showed exceptional knowledge, training and leadership. Very impressive.

The Sea Bird is old and cabins are what they are, but still really good.  Get fitted sheets. Easier on stewards and passengers. But vessel was great. We knew what to expect so no surprises. The common areas were more than adequate for the expedition.

Amazing work given the limitations of the galley. Breakfast and lunch were perfect to fuel us up and keep us energized. Appetizers were a highlight. I very much liked the portion size at dinner. Soup needs work. Too much of same dark base. Think miso or chowder, but minor. Great baked goods.  Service was A+++ from Val on down.

No one better than Rab, Betty Lou and Linda. Gold standard. Rab shared personal experiences and emotions and displayed encyclopedic knowledge of every subject. Clone him. Betty Lou's talk on her career was fabulous. The whole team was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, available, great in crisis and enthusiastic. How can one be with Rab and not get excited about the events or with Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn and not learn?

Photography staff was first rate. Brian and Drew knew everything and explained it clearly. Divers, Jim and Lynn, added a whole different dimension to our experience. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. Loved Ranger Molly. Wow!!!! No weak individual on this team.

Itinerary Review

Haida Gwaii, Gwai Hannas, Old Massett, and Alert Bay were strong cultural experiences which made the whole trip worthwhile. The nature walks were well chosen and instructive. Sometimes after dinner talks were repetitious, but small issue.

Zodiak tours were uniformly outstanding and exciting. The excursion into the sea near the Hobbit Hole was a memory for all time as was Rabs talk about Vitas Bering and George Stellars. Whew, all good!!! Glacier visits were well done, awesome, and sobering to see the impacts of climate change. Potlach dances were highlight also as was the ability to meet Jim Hart and Christian White. Legendary and inspiring. Gwaii Hannas was magical.

Andrew was, as always, excellent. Made our trip prep easy. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

Embrace the experience. Pack lighter/take less. Read some history like Muir's Travels in Alaska, history of decimation of tribes by European exposure and books on Northwest art.

Hikers on Matanuska Glacier – one of the best day trips from Anchorage

11 best day trips from Anchorage, Alaska

From kayaking alongside colossal glaciers to a bizarre Cold War-era town, these are the best day trips from Anchorage

The word ‘epic’ does not do Alaska justice. The state is home to North America’s largest mammals, national parks the size of countries and glaciers bigger than some US states. It is the least densely populated state in the US and is home to 17 of North America’s highest mountains, 100 volcanoes, 3,000 rivers and over three million lakes .

I visited Anchorage on either side of my recent climb of Denali and while you don’t go to Alaska for Anchorage, the state’s largest, best-connected city makes a prime base from which to explore the surrounding cinematic scenery.

Best day trips from Anchorage, Alaska

From kayaking alongside colossal glaciers to a bizarre Cold War-era town, these are the best day trips from Anchorage.

1. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

Distance from Anchorage:  80km/50mi Tour duration:  4-6 hours Price:  $110 (by guided tour) Book the tour: viator.com

If you take only one day trip from Anchorage, make it to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center . Located in Portage Valley and surrounded by the spectacular Chugach Mountain Range and Turnagain Arm Inlet, the non-profit sanctuary is dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, education, research and animal care.

Bison at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center – one of the best day trips from Anchorage

The sanctuary takes in orphaned and injured animals year-round and provides a home for them across more than 200 acres of various habitats. Visitors can expect to see brown bears, moose, bison, muskox, wolves and porcupines along the self-guided scenic 2.5km (1.5m) loop, accessible by foot, bike or car while learning about the residents via interpretive signs at each habitat. If visiting independently, entry is $25 per person.

2. Turnagain Arm

Distance from Anchorage:  22km/14mi Tour duration:  5 hours Price:  $159 Book the tour: viator.com

Just to the south of the city is the Turnagain Arm waterway, probably the easiest day trip from Anchorage and a spectacular setting for wildlife watching, nature photography and hiking. The waterway can be accessed via the Seward Highway – arguably an attraction in its own right as a designated USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, an Alaska Scenic Byway and an All-American Road.

Sunrise over a rocky coastline with mountains in the distance

The viewpoints at Beluga Point, Windy Corner and Bird Point are superb spots to view the Kenai and Chugach mountains and spot beluga whales. The shores of the waterway are best explored by foot via three outstanding trails: Turnagain Arm Trail (Mile 115), Potter Marsh (Mile 117) and Bird Ridge Trail (Mile 102).

To reach the trailheads and viewpoints, you will either need a car or to organise a taxi/car share. Alternatively, you can combine it with a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

Distance from Anchorage:  204km/126mi Tour duration:  15 hours Price:  $183 Book the tour: alaskarailroad.com

On the shores of Resurrection Bay, the tiny city of Seward boasts a spectrum of panoramas – water, sky, mountain and forest – all of which are easily accessible by road, boat or rail. Despite its size, Seward’s history as a railroad port has cultivated a lively city with a charming, historic downtown that has a range of excellent restaurants.

A train in front of mountains between between Seward and Anchorage

If you only have time for one activity, then the Lost Lake Trail offers unparalleled views of Seward from alpine meadows. If you don’t fancy getting active then Seward is a great spot to mooch around and admire the murals dotted around town.

If you have a car, the aforementioned Seward Highway from Anchorage has plenty of turnoffs for viewpoints and walks to take in en route. Alternatively, you can take the morning Alaska Railroad to Seward via the Coastal Classic route . The train departs from Anchorage at 6:45am and arrives at Seward at 11:20am allowing seven hours in Seward before the return rail journey at 6pm (arriving at Anchorage at 10pm). Round-trip fares start from $183.

4. Matanuska Glacier

Distance from Anchorage:  167km/104mi Tour duration:  10 hours Price:  $299 Book the tour: viator.com

Matanuska Glacier is the most accessible glacier in Alaska and the largest in the US that can be reached by vehicle. The colossal 44km/27mi-long river of ice flows from the Chugach Mountains almost right up to the Glenn Highway. The two-hour drive from Anchorage is naturally scenic and while the view from the highway is no doubt dazzling, the best way to experience the glacier is to get on it.

Hikers on Matanuska Glacier

Visitors are not allowed to walk on the glacier without an authorised guide. Tours will collect you from your accommodation in Anchorage in the morning and drive to the access point where glacier guides will provide crampons, helmets and hiking poles before you head out on a two-hour meander across the ice.

After the hike, there is time for lunch at a lodge overlooking the glacier before the return trip to Anchorage which will include a handful of photo stops at viewpoints along the way.

5. Kenai Fjords National Park

Distance from Anchorage:  201km/125mi Tour duration:  4 hours (+ travel time to Seward) Price:  $160 Book the tour: viator.com (from Seward)

At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies one of the most sensational landscapes on the planet; a place where ice, mountains and an ocean collide: Kenai Fjords National Park, located just beyond Seward.

It is impossible to do the park justice in one day but the Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic service from Anchorage to Seward times its arrivals and departures around half-day cruises around the park that provide a snapshot of the breathtaking scenery and wildlife on offer.

A glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park

Whale-watching and glacier cruises are the most popular activities but there are also kayaking excursions available and plenty of hiking options too. A popular hike is the Outwash Plain Trail , a short walk to the must-see Exit Glacier’s alluvial plain. The Edge of the Glacier Trail leaves the first loop and climbs steeply to a viewpoint at the side of the glacier. Allow yourself two hours from the Exit Glacier Nature Center to complete both trails and return.

6. Eagle River

Distance from Anchorage:  44km/27mi Tour duration:  6-8 hours Price:  ~$100 Book the tour: n/a

The quickest way to access the wilderness of the Alaskan interior from Anchorage is to drive to the Chugach State Park and explore the striking glacial valley created by the Eagle River. There is a string of small communities dotted along the valley but the aptly named town of Eagle River makes the best base to explore the park.

A river running through green hills and mountains

The Eagle River Nature Center started as a lodge, bar and steakhouse in the 1960s and 70s but is now a non-profit focused on natural history education in Chugach State Park. The organisation has built and maintains a network of hiking trails around the park. There are also salmon and beaver viewing decks, and yurts and cabins to rent.

There is no public transport to Eagle River so you will need to rent a car or organise a taxi/car share – around $100 each way from downtown Anchorage.

7. Spencer Glacier

Distance from Anchorage:  65km/40mi Tour duration:  12 hours Price:  $163 Book the tour: alaskarailroad.com

Spencer Glacier rises over 1,000m (3,500ft) in a stunning natural barricade of ice from a lake dotted with icebergs in the Chugach National Forest. In a land famed for its glaciers, what makes Spencer so alluring is that it can only be accessed by rail via the dedicated wilderness area Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop .

A red kayak sits on calm water in front of Spencer Glacier – one of the best day trips from Anchorage

Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train departs Anchorage at 9.45am and stops at several points of interest before arriving at Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop at 1.45pm. You have the option to return to the train and continue along the line or take a few hours to explore the area by going for a hike, joining a boat tour or taking a guided kayaking excursion. The return train picks up at 4.40pm and arrives in Anchorage at 9pm. Round-trip fares start from $163.

8. Denali flightseeing from Talkeetna

Distance from Anchorage:  185km/115mi Tour duration:  14 hours Price:  $350 (+$150 for the bus) Book the tour: viator.com (from Talkeetna)

I began my Denali climb with a sensational 45-minute flight from the frontier town of Talkeetna onto the Kahiltna Glacier. The plane takes off over the Alaskan backcountry before entering the Alaskan Range where it weaves between the giant peaks. While our flight ended at base camp, scenic flightseeing tours also include flybys of North America’s highest peak as well as Ruth Amphitheater, Great Gorge, Tokositna and Ruth Glaciers, Mt Huntington and the hanging glaciers of Mt Hunter.

My climb began with a flight from Talkeetna

Talkeetna – a two-hour drive from Anchorage – has a small airfield used for ferrying climbers onto Denali and running flightseeing tours. After your 90-minute flight, spend the rest of the afternoon wandering around charming and artsy Talkeetna. There is a host of galleries, souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants to keep you occupied.

If you don’t have a car, you can get to Talkeetna from Anchorage by bus which runs twice a day . Fares are $75 each way.

Distance from Anchorage:  45km/30mi Tour duration:  4-8 hours Price:  ~$75 Book the tour: n/a

The Native Village of Eklutna is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Alaska with archaeological evidence suggesting it was settled around 800 years ago. The village is home to the Eklutna Village Historical Park – the area’s oldest continuously inhabited Athabaskan settlement which dates back to 1650. The park is famous for its rows of colourful Spirit Houses built over the graves of the deceased.

Colourful Spirit Houses in a row

If you cross the Glenn Highway, you can drive up to the snout of the glacier-and-peak-ringed Eklutna Lake where there are outdoor activities available including kayaking, biking and hiking.

There is no public transport to Eklutna so you will need to rent a car or organise a taxi/car share – around $75 each way from downtown Anchorage.

10. Whittier

Distance from Anchorage:  100km/62mi Tour duration:  12 hours Price:  $129 Book the tour: alaskarailroad.com

Even by Alaskan standards, Whittier is a bizarre outpost. The Cold War-era town is wedged between snowcapped peaks and Prince William Sound where you can see the world’s largest concentration of tidewater glaciers.

Snowcapped mountains over looking the waterfront showing the big cold war building

What makes the town unusual is its skyline, dominated by two incongruous buildings. Almost all of the town’s 270-odd residents live in one building , a 14-storey former army barracks called Begich Towers, now resembling an ageing hotel. Just as out of place is the abandoned Buckner Building, an enormous bomb-proof recreational centre previously used by the military and designed to resist a Soviet attack from the air.

While the strange town is an attraction in itself, activities include a boat cruise among the glaciers of Prince William Sound, kayaking, jet skiing and hiking the Portage Pass Trail. Whittier is on Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train so easily doable in a day.

11. Northern Lights tour

Distance from Anchorage:  0 – 100km/62mi Tour duration:  6 hours Price:  $315 Book the tour: viator.com

Anchorage is located at 61° North, making the city a superb base to see the famed  Northern Lights . The lights can even be seen from the city itself with the Anchorage Downtown Viewpoint a popular spot. However, to get the best views with minimal light pollution, you should head out of town.

Northern lights above trees and snowfields near Anchorage

If you have a car, then good spots include Chugach State Park, Eagle River and the viewpoints along the Turnagain Arm. However, it’s best to join an organised tour with an Alaskan who will have knowledge of local conditions.

The best time to see the aurora is during the darker months of September to April when the days are shorter and the Northern Lights appear at their strongest.

Best day trips from Anchorage: the essentials

What: Best day trips from Anchorage, Alaska.

Where: In Anchorage, I stayed at the 3-star Hyatt House . While perfectly serviceable, the hotel was a bit far from downtown Anchorage. I would opt for a more central hotel so you can explore the city and access the railway station. More central mid-range options include the 4-star Hotel Captain Cook and the 3-star Aviator Hotel .

View of Anchorage from the Turnagain Arm

When: The best time to visit Anchorage and Alaska is from May to September when the skies are clearer, temperatures are milder and daylight hours are longer, allowing plenty of time to explore.

How: In Anchorage, I used Uber to get around the city’s main sites and recommend joining organised tours or using the Alaska Railroad to travel further afield. That said, if you rent a car, you will have more freedom to explore the more obscure points of interest which aren’t connected by public transport.

To enter the USA, most nationalities will need to  apply for an ESTA  at least 72 hours before travel. The fee is currently $21.

I flew to Alaska with British Airways and Alaska Airlines via Seattle (outbound) and Portland (inbound). Book flights via  Skyscanner  for the best prices.

We recommend getting a  Holafly eSIM for North America  so you can stay connected to the internet on your trip. We can offer our readers 5% off  Holafly  purchases. Simply use the code  ATLASANDBOOTS  at checkout.

Your train to Fairbanks departs late morning, so take some time before to visit the Denali National Park Ranger Station just off Main Street in Talkeetna. The station, which is where all climbers must check in before attempting to climb Denali, showcases some interesting mountaineering history.

Board the train once more for your afternoon ride to Fairbanks. Overnight Fairbanks.

Enjoy some down time at your riverside hotel this morning before taking a history and culture tour aboard a classic sternwheeler on the Chena River. Overnight Fairbanks.

Head to the Fairbanks Depot this morning to catch the train heading south to Denali National Park. The trip takes about four hours, winding through rolling tundra on the way to a precipitous stretch of track along the Nenana River Canyon before reaching the Denali Depot.

This afternoon you're headed onto the river itself for an exhilarating whitewater raft trip down the canyon's roiling rapids. Overnight Denali.

Rise early this morning for your guided bus tour into Denali National Park. You'll travel many miles today, riding along a solitary gravel road that winds across rivers, valleys, and glacial plains that dominate the park's boundless landscape. It is very common to see wildlife on this popular excursion. Overnight Denali.

Today you'll travel aboard the Park Connection, a motorcoach service offering same-day transportation between Denali Park and Seward. Bring any electronics that need charging on board. Seats are conveniently equipped with power outlets. A brief midday stop is made in Anchorage. Overnight Seward.

The misty waters of Kenai Fjords National Park await you today as you head out on a scenic wildlife cruise from Seward. The setting is beautiful in its rugged moodiness, with the coastline often draped in wispy clouds and the water a deep, endless blue. The cruise visits Aialik Bay and at least one tidewater glacier before returning to Resurrection Bay. Overnight Seward.

You'll take one final trip into Kenai Fjords National Park today, this time by foot on a guided hike to Exit Glacier. The rest of the day is yours to explore Seward before your evening train ride back to Anchorage. The package ends with a final overnight in Anchorage.
