Boise health tech. company expands along Boise River

VisitPay Boise

The company, formerly known as iVinci Health , applied to remodel a 16,307 square foot office space along the Boise River. The new digs sit on a property formerly owned by St. Luke’s Health System – and originally earmarked for a failed attempt to build a stadium along the Boise River. The building is now part of the River Shore Development.

The company provides a billing system for health systems, which it says helps simplify the billing process for patients and hospitals. It lists St. Luke’s as one of its clients.

  • Boise-based  VisitPay , a health technology company that was named to the Tech Tribune list of the best startups in Boise and the best startups in Idaho, was acquired by R1, a Chicago-based health technology company, for approximately $300 million. The company was founded in Boise in 2010, with one of its first customers being the St. Luke’s Health System. In 2020, the company said it experienced record platform growth, 100% contract renewal, deployment at 10% of US not-for-profit hospitals, and an NPS (Net Promoter Score)  average of 44, in an industry where the average is 16-27.
  • SMHeuristics is changing its name to Vessel. The Boise-based company provides both supply chain management and go-to-market services, including off the shelf and custom sourcing and manufacturing, logistics, compliance, quality control, vetting, financing, supply agreements and warehousing. The company maintains offices in the US and Asia linking vendors and manufacturing resources. GTM capabilities include branding, packaging, sales, distribution development, marketing and advertising to include full digital marketing, website design and development with a focus on e-commerce, content creation and lead generation.
  • Mandiant, a cybersecurity company based in Alexandria, Virginia, has selected Boise-based PlexTrac to provide a platform to support its Proactive Assessment Team with streamlined reporting and collaboration throughout their engagement cycle. The PlexTrac platform will support the delivery of Mandiant security assessment services, including internal and external penetration testing, mobile and web application testing, red teaming, and others. The Mandiant Proactive Assessment Team will use PlexTrac’s real time collaboration to improve assessment workflows and reporting times to expedite the completion of client deliverables.
  • POWER Engineers Inc. has acquired Colorado-based Salient Power Engineering LLC. Salient Power is an approximately 25-person, private firm with offices in Wheat Ridge, a suburb of Denver. The electric power system consulting firm has specialized in substation and power system studies, as well as renewable energy and heavy industrial markets across the United States. While the company already had a Denver office, the acquisition will expand its presence to about 125 people, allowing it to better serve Xcel Energy, its major client in the region. The company also said it would purchase enough renewable hydropower to cover the energy use of its Hailey headquarters and Meridian campus, approximately 3,000 MWh per year, to be 100% renewable energy in its Idaho offices.
  • Similarly, Porvair plc has announced that its Boise plant, responsible for the manufacture of high purity products for the microelectronics industry, is now considered to be 100% clean energy compliant. The energy is a mix of hydro, wind, and solar power with about 40% coming from hydroelectricity from Idaho Power, and the remainder using Idaho Power’s Green Power Program to cover the non-hydro portion of its electricity use with wind and solar energy sourced from the northwest.
  • MaxLite, a global manufacturer of energy-efficient lighting solutions based in West Caldwell, New Jersey, and  Retrolux , a Boise-based lighting project development and implementation software platform, have announced a new partnership that will introduce the MaxLite product portfolio to ESCOs, electrical contractors, and other clients using the Retrolux platform.
  • Retrolux announced a similar partnership with Light Efficient Design/ RemPhos (LED), a manufacturer of LED lighting retrofit fixtures and HID retrofit technologies.
  • Joule Case , which is closing out its seed round, has been awarded a patent for its modular battery pack system. The company is headquartered in Seattle because that’s where the CEO lives, but the two founders are from Boise and the product is manufactured in Boise. In addition, Joule was recently covered by Forbes for its use at music festivals.

  • Zennify , a Boise-based Salesforce consulting partner, has announced 30% year-over-year growth, which marks a year of strategic development for the consulting firm. • Iron Mule Inc. has raised $500,000 in seed round funding from accredited investors to expand its social purpose infused coffee brands into the national grocery chain market.
  • Just VR, a virtual reality training, collaboration and legal proceedings platform based in Eagle, has been accepted to the Legal Tech Hub Vienna accelerator program, the first U.S. company to do so.
  • StageDotO Ventures , based in Seattle and Boise, led a $9.1 million Series A funding round for Teal Communications, a Seattle-based Internet of Things networking service company. Stormbreaker Ventures, Capital Eleven, Accellius Capital, the Alliance of Angels (AoA), and principals of Steelhead Partners also participated.
  • Sparklight , a broadband provider in 21 states, including Idaho, has announced its participation in the FCC Emergency Broadband Benefit program, a temporary, $3.2 billion federal program designed to help households struggling to pay for internet service during the pandemic. The program provides eligible current and new Sparklight customers with active internet service up to $50 off their monthly bill based on their current internet plan and equipment rental, and up to $75 off for customers who live on a tribal land.
  • Boise’s Batteries Plus Bulbs store has become the first retail partner in Samsung’s Independent Service Provider program. The partnership will provide local Boise Samsung users access to receive smartphone repair services through  Wireless Industry Service Excellence certified technicians located in their community.
  • Two University of Idaho College of Engineering teams earned a total of $11,000 during the 16 th annual Northwest Entrepreneur Competition to launch sustainability and home gym business startups in Idaho. Biological engineering senior Addie White, of Boise, earned $10,000 for her first-place win in the Traditional Business category for her Campus Can Crushers, a durable, lever-action aluminum can crusher that helped U of I recycle 1.3 tons of aluminum during a campuswide competition this spring. Mechanical engineering seniors Nicholas Daquila, of Bellevue, Washington; Zachary Laymon, of Willamina, Oregon; Siobhan McGuire, of Post Falls; and Justin Stephens, of Portland, Oregon, won $1,000 and third place in the Traditional Business category for their modular home and commercial gym rock climbing wall holds called Cruxion.

CEO foreshadows next chapter for VisitPay since R1 acquisition announcement

visit pay boise

VisitPay CEO and co-founder Kent Ivanoff and his 11-year-old Boise-based startup were recently purchased for approximately $300 million, but Ivanoff doesn’t expect VisitPay’s innovation plans to change anytime soon, with the exception of possibly being sped up.

The acquiring business, R1 , is also a technology-driven solutions platform, which Ivanoff believes will better than complement VisitPa y’s “management of patient billing for good.”

visit pay boise

As the industry’s market began trying to figure out the same problems VisitPay was addressing, Ivanoff said he had almost a dozen parties reach out about joining forces. To help in the decision, Ivanoff and the leadership team hired an investment bank to help determine whether the best course of action for all parties would be to sell, merge or stay independent.

Boise Startup Week, Built in Idaho and Trailhead enjoyed talking with Ivanoff further about his approach to VisitPay being acquired, and what is next for himself and the startup.

visit pay boise

What do you feel this merger means for VisitPay?

“We presumed that ultimately we’d need to be part of something bigger. Ultimately we came to the conclusion the right answer for all stakeholders is R1.”

The purchase price offer was very attractive, Ivanoff added, and he was sold on the company’s desire to complement their robust tech-enabled service business with VisitPay’s robust technology platform. R1 and VisitPay already shared some clients, and now the services those clients receive can be broadened and deeply integrated.

“It was a nice synergy, and as a publicly traded company, (there is) more capital available to us for a more aggressive innovation agenda. We have so many more resources to bring to bear, (such as for R&D).”

The current plan is that “R1 will keep the VisitPay team not just intact, but thriving in Boise.” Ivanoff expects there to be hiring for tech jobs, including for VisitPay, “making Boise a hub.”

How do you see your role?

Ivanoff will now report to R1’s CEO Joseph Flanagan, and Ivanoff plans to “continue leading the VisitPay business line.”

“I think my impact to the broader organization is to-be-determined. My primary and singular focus in the near term is continuing to execute the VisitPay business plan — continue to grow the company, innovate R&D, drive value for customers and patients. We had a very robust innovation agenda prior to R1; I don’t see that changing at all; I think the pace (might) increase because of more access to resources and having the ability to extend our reach beyond what we have today.”

What innovation and R&D would you like to speak to?

Ivanoff describes VisitPay as offering a platform that allows health care providers a turnkey system to manage the patient experience, particularly around the billing and payment cycle. VisitPay uses years of data to estimate charges, also a helpful tool for insurance companies.

VisitPay addresses the complexities of patient billing while acknowledging the humanness of the stakeholders; VisitPay’s client base includes multiple not-for-profit hospitals. VisitPay describes itself as “reimagining the patient experience” by “being designed for people, not claims;” offering “consolidated bills, finance plans and payments,” and maintaining connection through pre-service to post-service. It also “optimizes provider actions.”

Consumers and providers both want a resolution, Ivanoff said. The intent is to keep people out of bankruptcy and debt, and being respectful, approaching billing “the right way,” which can have “a great set of outcomes.”

“It’s been our vision … to extend the seamlessness of what we offer our clients. All our folks bought into being a part of something making a difference. (We are) excited to bring R1 products into that ecosystem.”

What advice do you have for those considering selling or merging?

Ivanoff is a serial entrepreneur, and this is not his first time selling a company.

“I think a lot of things went into (this decision) for us. I think (you) need to have some type of framework of how to make that decision before you face it.”

For Ivanoff, that meant really considering who the partner would be, if the cultures would align, and if all stakeholders would benefit. The goal for VisitPay has been to have its desired impact on a national scale, and to do that in Boise. Ivanoff anticipated a serious partner would be needed.

“Being independent for the sake of being independent never resonated with me. I think if (done) the right way, (selling/merging) can be very liberating and create an abundance of outcomes for all stakeholders. The next chapter starts here.”

VisitPay gets $15M for online platform that helps patients pay bills

visit pay boise

“Our cloud-based technology is in demand from patients and providers alike in this age of high-deductible health plans. It can be implemented across multiple billing systems in as little as 10 weeks,” Kent Ivanoff, CEO of VisitPay, said in a statement. “We are excited to begin this next stage of our journey and look forward to dramatically expanding the number of health systems and patient consumers we can serve.”

VisitPay offers hospitals an online payment platform for patients. The platform allows patients to see what they need to pay by integrating data from the patient's health plan and data from the health provider. It also allows patients to set up tailored installment payment plans, all online. By making it easier for patients to pay for their care, the software helps hospitals increase the number of patients that make their payments.

While the problem of patients not paying has always existed in healthcare, rising deductibles have made it more common, and more damaging, to health system bottom lines.

St. Luke's Health System in Idaho and Orego, which has had VisitPay deployed since 2014, has seen a 50 percent increase in patient satisfaction ratings and a 20 percent increase in patient payment rates, according to VisitPay. Intermountain, which just began deploying the technology this past spring, is also seeing results.

"The early results from our VisitPay implementation are extraordinary,” Bert Zimmerli, EVP and CFO at Intermountain, said in a statement. “In the span of a few months we’ve seen the number of patients who rate their billing experience as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ improve by more than 40 percent.”

10 States and Cities That Pay You to Move There in 2024

Reading Time: 11 minutes

In an era where remote work is an option for many people and geographical boundaries are less of a barrier, many places are seizing the opportunity to attract new residents through innovative incentives.

From tax breaks to cash, these programs are designed to attract a diverse range of talent and strengthen local economies. Some of the incentives are substantial, reaching five figures, while others offer free recreation equipment or assistance with down payments.

Additionally, many places are primarily focused on bringing in remote workers. However, there are states that offer financial incentives for individuals willing to accept local, in-person job opportunities.

So, whether you’re considering moving across the country for a change of scenery or some extra income, there may be a few destinations on this list that catch your attention. In this Redfin article, we take a closer look at 10 states and cities that pay you to move there.

3 states that pay you to move there

visit pay boise

If moving closer to the great outdoors sounds appealing to you, nothing beats the rugged, beautiful landscape of Alaska. But with Alaska being so far away, you may wonder: how much does Alaska pay you to live there, and why?

Simply put, Alaska needs people. So much so that new Alaskans will receive an annual dividend simply for living there for a full calendar year and intending on becoming a resident indefinitely. To see if your forever home is in Alaska, look up homes for sale in Alaska and Alaska rentals in popular cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks .

If you’re still on the fence about living in Alaska , consider this: there’s no state tax, so you won’t have to pay any income or sales tax ( local sales tax may apply though). Additionally, the median home price is $347,300, compared to the national median price of $402,242. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by stunning scenery and wildlife and have access to some of the world’s best seafood.

Arkansas’ moving incentive program is aimed at attracting top talent to move to the region, and they’ll even throw in some outdoor gear to explore the area’s vast wilderness. Plus, with an average median home price of $238,900, a high per capita income, and a low cost of living , it’s no wonder it’s known as one of the best places to live in America.

If calling Northwest Arkansas your new home state has a nice ring to it, check out homes for sale or apartments for rent in Arkansas to see if your next dream home is available.

2. West Virginia

visit pay boise

Famous for more than just its “country roads”, West Virginia offers one of the most lucrative programs to attract new residents to the state. This West Virginia moving incentive is called Ascend West Virginia, and they’re currently accepting applications from people who want to get paid to move to West Virginia. The program focuses on the Greenbrier Valley, Morgantown, Greater Elkins, Eastern Panhandle, and New River Gorge communities.

In addition to a huge chunk of change, new transplants can also receive outdoor recreational equipment along with other benefits to sweeten the pot. With a median sale price 26% below the national average at $297,600, housing in West Virginia is very affordable even without receiving the money to move there.

This program is quite popular, so get a head start on some house or apartment hunting by scoping out West Virginia rentals and homes for sale in West Virginia before applications fill up.

visit pay boise

If you currently work remotely, you may want to put the Green Mountain State at the top of your list. As one of the smallest states by population, with around 625,000 residents, the state is enticing remote workers to move there by offering an employment grant with awards up to $7,500. While this attractive relocation incentive doesn’t cover your moving expenses, it’s worth noting that the median sales price of a home in Vermont is $389,000, lower than the national median of $402,242.

If you want to test drive the home state of Ben & Jerry’s before committing, there are plenty of rentals in Vermont to consider. And if you enjoy your time, Vermont’s beautiful outdoor space and affordable housing make it a great place to call home.

Note: the New Relocating Worker Grant, listed in our previous article, is no longer accepting applications.

Your next home is just a tap away

1. hamilton, oh.

hamilton-oh

Hamilton has a great program to offer if you’re one of the many college graduates seeking remote work out of state. With student loans being the biggest deterrent to growth for college graduates, the city is offering to pay down debts to boost its college-educated workforce.

The affordable housing market is also one of the perks of moving to the city; the median sale price for homes in Hamilton is just $207,450. But if you want to see what else the city has to offer before moving there, you can always rent an apartment in Hamilton to see if it’s the right fit for you.

2. Lincoln, KS

most-walkable-cities-in-kansas

Instead of cash incentives, Lincoln takes a unique approach to attract new residents by offering free land to those looking to put down roots. Each lot ranges from 14,000 to 35,000 square feet and is located within a fully decked-out residential development within the city limits. Keep in mind that you are responsible for the costs associated with building a new home, however.

But if building a home isn’t for you, Lincoln is made even more attractive by its affordable housing market. The median sale price for homes in Lincoln County is just $57,000.

3. Newton, IA

visit pay boise

The city of Newton is attracting new residents to settle into their community for the long haul with a major housing initiative. With the Get to Know Newton program, you’ll receive a stipend amount based on the value of the home you buy. So, if you pay $240,000 or more for a home, you’ll receive a $10,000 cash incentive, as well as the Get to Know Newton welcome package.

Choosing Newton as your home also means more affordable housing. The median home price for homes for sale in Newton is $108,500 – far below the national median. But if you’re looking to scope out the city before making your decision, there are plenty of rentals in Newton to consider.

4. Rochester, NY

Rochester, known for its snowy winters , natural splendor, and abundance of museums and amenities, wants to grow. The city is doing it through the Greater ROC Remote initiative, which aims to bring a talented remote workforce to the shores of Lake Ontario. The initiative offers cash, incentives for buying a home, and will pay for you to visit if you’re not willing to move sight-unseen.

Apart from being a very affordable place to live, it’s full of amenities and attractions, like the George Eastman Museum, the Strong National Museum of Play, the Seneca Park Zoo, and the Canandaigua Wine Trail.

5. The Shoals: Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia, AL

visit pay boise

If you’re a remote worker looking for a change of scenery, a vibrant food scene, outdoor activities, and more, consider The Shoals area in Alabama. The Shoals is made up of four different cities: Florence , Muscle Shoals , Sheffield , and Tuscumbia , and all four are accepting applications for new residents interested in participating in the Remote Shoals program.

Can’t part with the hustle and bustle of urban life? No worries. The Shoals is only a two-hour drive from Birmingham, Nashville, and Memphis, and an hour flight to Atlanta via Boutique Airlines, giving you easy access to major cities.

With low property taxes and below-average house prices, the overall cost of living in these cities is significantly lower than other similarly sized metro areas in the state. But if you’re having trouble picking and need to test drive each city, you can also consider renting an apartment in Florence , Muscle Shoals , Sheffield , or Tuscumbia .

6. Topeka, KS

visit pay boise

Known for its arts and outdoor scene, moving to Topeka, KS, could be a decision that pays off in spades. The Choose Topeka Initiative offers cash funds to remote workers moving from out of state for an “on site” position, as well as to remote workers who relocate as long as their employer is located outside of Shawnee County.

New applicants with on site positions, where your employer is a participant in a relocation incentive and located in Shawnee County, are eligible to receive up to $10,000 for renting and up to $15,000 for buying a home. Remote workers, where your employer is located outside of Shawnee County, can receive up to $5,000 for rent in the first year and up to $10,000 in funds towards a home purchase.

There’s also no denying the savings that come with living in Topeka compared to other major cities. The median home price in Topeka is $147,000, less than half the national median, and the city boasts a 14% lower cost of living compared to the national average.

Ready to make the move? Start your home search by looking up apartments for rent in Topeka , as well as homes for sale in Topeka .

7. Tulsa, OK

visit pay boise

Oklahoma is paying to relocate remote workers through a program called Tulsa Remote. With a low cost of living, a thriving remote community, and countless opportunities to explore the city, it’s no wonder why Tulsa has been attracting a steady stream of new residents. In fact, the Tulsa Remote alone has brought 2,900 people to the area and generated hundreds of millions of dollars.

If you’re looking to buy a house in Tulsa , it’s worth noting that the median home sale price in Tulsa is $206,500 – 49% below the national median price . Plus, through Tulsa Remote, you’ll receive cash and other benefits for your Oklahoma relocation.

But if you’re not ready to make the leap to homeownership, no worries. Consider renting an apartment in Tulsa or checking out houses for rent to get a feel for what it’s like to live in Tulsa before putting down roots.

Final thoughts

With the option to work remotely still a possibility for many people, many states are offering enticing financial incentives for people looking to relocate. If you’re a remote worker moving out of state or looking for a fresh start and new job, you may find that moving to one of these places could be a decision that pays off – literally. And with the lower cost of living and median home prices in many of these cities, you’ll likely gainmany more economic benefits in addition to the money you receive for moving.

There are dozens of other offers and incentives for people willing to relocate, but most require specific education or other requirements. Visit MakeMyMove to see a full list.

Need an affordable apartment? This new Boise complex is inviting applications

T he city of Boise and a private developer have collaborated to provide Boise residents with affordable housing in a new apartment complex on the Bench. Aimed at low- to middle-income tenants, those apartments are now leasing.

The Franklin apartments are not yet open, but the property manager is accepting applications for tenants to move in as early as summer 2024, according to t he-franklin.com . The complex has 205 apartments on the southwest corner of Franklin and Orchard streets, across from a Fred Meyer store.

Under an agreement between the developer and the city, most of the apartments, 184, are reserved for residents making 60% or below Boise’s area median income. (More on that below.)

The Franklin will have 66 one-bedroom, 118 two-bedroom and 21 three-bedroom apartments. According to the website, the one-bedroom, one-bathroom units range from 631 square feet to 738 square feet. The two-bedroom, two-bathroom units range from 935 square feet to 1,033 square feet, and the three-bedroom, three-bathroom units are 1,393 square feet.

When completed the Franklin will also have a child care center for up to 80 children and infants, according to the city .

The apartments are next to the recently redeveloped Franklin Park. They are part of the Franklin Park development, which is planned to include ground-floor retail.

Do I qualify?

According to the city, the Franklin targets mostly individuals making 60% of the area median income or below. Sixty percent of that income is $37,440 annually for one person, $42,780 for a couple and $53,460 for a family of four.

A list of the Boise-area median incomes and affordable rentals are available at cityofboise.org/departments/planning-and-development-services/housing-and-community-development/income-guidelines.

How much are the rents?

The city says an individual making 60% of area median income or lower shouldn’t pay more than $936 per month in rent. For a couple that is $1,070 and $1,337 for a family of four.

Source: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Not all units are deemed affordable. The rents on available Franklin units listed as of Thursday, March 28, were higher than the amounts above. According to the Franklin’s website, one-bedroom apartments rent for $961 to $1,375, two-bedrooms for $1,152, and three-bedrooms for $1,850.

City officials directed questions from an Idaho Statesman reporter to the property management company, Olive West Properties. A spokesperson, Sarah Boyle, with developer, J. Fisher Co. told the Statesman in an email that “the monthly price per unit varies depending on multiple factors.”

How do I apply?

The Franklin’s website says people interested in renting a unit should contact the leasing office at 208-247-3111 or fill out the email form on the website.

What else should I know?

The Franklin is the first apartment complex to be built under Boise’s Housing Land Trust program. The program was designed to rent city-owned property to developers at nominal cost to encourage low-income housing.

A second Housing Land Trust development, a 97-apartment building named Wilson Station , is going up at State and Arthur streets on the former site of the Smoky Davis smoked-meat shop in the Veterans Park neighborhood.
