Whether you’re a prospective student or just visiting the Boston area, we invite you to explore our dynamic campus and experience firsthand how MIT is making a better world .

MIT is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, across the Charles River from Boston, in the vibrant innovation district of Kendall Square . Founded in 1865, MIT established a new kind of independent educational institution relevant to an increasingly industrialized America. Since then, the Institute has built a robust tradition of solving problems in the public interest at the intersection of technology and humanity.

Welcome Center

The MIT Welcome Center is open at 292 Main Street in Kendall Square , conveniently located next to the Kendall/MIT MBTA subway station. Stop by to get guidance about visiting MIT and pick up a campus map  (and to use the restroom, fill your water bottle, or access free Wi-Fi and power outlets). The adjacent green space is also a great place to have lunch or take a break. Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding MIT holidays  and Institute closures.

The MIT Welcome Center is a gift of Tina and Hamid (SB 1977, SM 1978) Moghadam.

Getting Here & Getting Around

A great place to start your visit is at the MIT Welcome Center, located at 292 Main Street, Cambridge . Parking can be tough here! We recommend public transportation or a taxi/rideshare service (such as Uber or Lyft) to campus.

Via public transportation

Boston’s public transportation system is the MBTA , known as “the T.”

Subway : From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). The ride should take about 30 minutes and is free.

Bus : The 64, 68, and 85 lines stop near the MIT Welcome Center. The #1 bus  stops on Massachusetts Avenue, about a 15-minute walk from the Welcome Center.

Shuttle : The EZ Ride shuttle runs to and from Boston’s North Station, with stops at Kendall Square and around MIT’s campus (Note: EZRide is not operated by the MBTA; fare is $2 cash per trip).

From Logan Airport

Taxi or rideshare : Taxi fare from the airport is about $35–$40, and a rideshare service can range from about $20–$35. During non-rush hour, the ride will take about 15 minutes; during rush hour, it may take 30 minutes or more.

Subway : From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). The ride should take about 30 minutes.

  • South Station, Boston , is the closest train station. South Station is served by the MBTA Red Line, which connects to MIT at the MIT/Kendall stop.
  • Bluebikes is the Boston area’s public bike share program. There are several stations around campus for renting or returning a bike. Visitors may purchase an Adventure Pass , which is valid for 24 hours.

Parking in Cambridge and Boston can be expensive and hard to find. Whenever possible, park where you’re staying and use public transportation or a taxi/rideshare service. If you must drive to the campus, on- and off-street parking is available for a fee, but most public parking is not very close to the center of campus. More parking information is available from Parkopedia .

We are part of one of the coolest, most creative, and intellectually vibrant ecosystems on Earth.

Originally founded in Boston, MIT now makes its home in the city of Cambridge, a place the New York Times   says, “blends its erudite character with a rich serving of arts and culture.”

Our campus is situated in Kendall Square , a hub brimming with technology giants, biotechnology firms, and   startups. Ever evolving, the plans to develop our neighborhood are next-level cool.

But we aren’t all engineering and no play. Our campus is a mere 364.4 smoots (plus or minus one ear) across the Charles River to Boston, where foodies can indulge, sports fanatics can cheer, and history buffs can walk the streets of Paul Revere. We are also only a subway ride away from the beach and a short road trip to the Green Mountains or the White Mountains.

The bottom line: this city has something for everyone. We encourage you to come check it out for yourself.

MIT.nano 2022 IAP courses

The Independent Activities Period (IAP) is a special term at MIT that runs from early January until the end of the month. IAP provides members of the MIT community (students, faculty, staff, and alums) with a unique opportunity to organize, sponsor and participate in a wide variety of activities, including how-to sessions, forums, athletic endeavors, lecture series, films, tours, recitals and contests.

MIT.nano is offering the following courses during IAP 2022:

Hands-on Fabrication on Zoom

Instructor: jorg scholvin, assistant director of user services, fab.nano.

Monday, January 24, 2021 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM EST Virtual; register here.

A person working in a cleanroom.

Learn about micro-fabrication techniques, and join us via Zoom for a live fabrication demo inside the MIT.nano cleanrooms! Learn about thin-film deposition, lithography and etching processes at the micro- and nano-scale—and how to combine these techniques to build a semiconductor device (such as you might find in your computers or phones). For our demo, we’ll start by taking a screenshot in Zoom and then use the MIT.nano tools to turn it into a diffraction grating on a silicon wafer! At the end of the session, we’ll place the wafer inside the window of the fab, so you can come by and see it (safely from outside the building), whenever you’re back on campus.   No enrollment limit, and open to all members of the MIT community.   Interested undergraduates can also check out the 6.152J lab for a hands-on lab using MIT.nano this spring (you’ll be the one actually using the equipment in the lab—to design, build and test your own device ideas). Read about the Fall 2019 course at MIT News.

A practical introduction to biomechanics

Hosted by the mit.nano immersion lab instructor: praneeth namburi, postdoctoral associate.

January 25, 2022 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Virtual; register here.

motion capture of two people

Most of us learn to breathe and walk and move at a time that we can’t recall much from and use these skills throughout our lives without really knowing how exactly they work, and how to improve them. Several scientists and artists have spent their lives deciphering how these processes work. Their insights can help you perfect your craft if you are an athlete, martial artist, performance artist, or even interested in improving your health and well-being.

In this course, you will see how motion capture and physiological recordings can be applied to understand more deeply how our body achieves tasks that seem intuitive and easy to us, and how these tools can be used in research, education, and athletic and artistic improvement.

Originally scheduled to be in-person, this course will now take place virtually on January 25 (Tuesday) from 10 am to 12 pm.

This course is sponsored by the MIT.nano Immersion Lab , which provides space, tools, and a platform to connect scientists and engineers with artists, musicians, and performers through creative projects that bridge multiple disciplines. It also showcases the capabilities of the MIT Clinical Research Center, which supports human research and medical innovation.

Registration deadline: January 21, 2022.

Innovation Discovery Japan 2022 Explores Virtual Communities

by Koji Takahashi, Eishi Majima, Kosuke Nakajima, Tatsuya Osugi, and Toru Kawasaki

Overview of IDJ ’22

Innovation Discovery Japan (IDJ) is a tech trek to Japan in which MIT students and researchers visit technology-oriented Japanese companies and research institutes. IDJ was established in 2017 by Japanese students at MIT to build networks between MIT and Japan by exposing MIT students and faculty to Japanese technologies and businesses. The sixth trek, IDJ ’22, took place on March 21-24, 2022, and was delivered remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Demographics

IDJ ’22 participants came from diverse fields and programs within MIT, allowing them to learn from each other as well as from the companies. Students from SDM (Yoshiki Shoji, Naoki Kobayashi, Yuya Makino, Kosuke Nakajima, Eishi Majima, Toru Kawasaki, Tatsuya Osugi, and Koji Takahashi), IDM (Masumi Ito), and Sloan Fellows MBA (Takeshi Kai) organized company sessions and managed logistics for the virtual tour.

Ring graph showing backgrounds of participants. 35 participants total. Undergrad: 34%. Master's: 51%. Ph.D.: 11%. Postdoctoral fellow: 3%.

Company Reports

Capcom gave an exciting presentation about its company culture, organization structure, animation production process, and various technologies utilized. Capcom is a leader of electronic games industry, focusing on game machines manufacturing and distribution. During the presentation, Capcom invited multiple experts specializing in business operation, gaming design, sound effects, and animation production to give us a comprehensive introduction to the company.

Among these topics, Capcom’s innovative sound effects studio and “grey box” animation process gave the audience a strong impression. For sound effects, Capcom’s sound experts created numerous sound effects for animations by using very common daily objects, playing around them with a high level of precision and creativity.

Capcom also gave a vivid demo presentation of its animation design, especially the “Grey Box Production,” which is a part of the Level Design Process in RE ENGINE. Grey Box Production is for Level/Asset Proxy and Draft Lighting, and it’s created with low fidelity temporary assets to facilitate verifying the gameplay for pacing, fun and other metrics. According to Capcom, it also has various generative models at R&D stage, which can bring more core technology advantage to the company in the future.

Two men rendered in computer graphics. The man on the left has a determined grin and floppy short brown hair, wearing a blue vest over a white tank top. The man on the right has a long topknot braid and a more pensive expression and is wearing a yellow hooded garment. Across the bottom of the image is written "STREET FIGHTER."

Sony’s purpose is to fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology. During the 75 minutes of a virtual interactive tour, Sony dazzled us with the above technological advances. They also showed us how important it is to engage with the customer and improve their creativity. In a single virtual meeting, we were able to play PlayStation®5 games using AR, interact with costumes used in various iconic Sony movies, feel the action as if we were on the movie set, play with Sony’s aibo pets, find a tiny Spiderman in a New York City decor using Sony’s Xperia™ PRO and use Sony’s Hawk Eye to figure out who was responsible for a soccer foul. At every step, Sony guided our experience by letting us make the choices shaping our entertainment and inspiring creativity. Sony embodied its purposes fully during its presentation, which left us confident in the success of Sony’s future technologies and products.

The Pokémon Company

The Pokémon Company (formerly Pokémon Center Co., Ltd.) was founded in 1998 and has more than 1,400 employees in its group consisting of a headquarter in Japan and six domestic and international subsidiaries. Pokémon as an IP recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and is produced by the company: the company develops and produces video games as well as trading card games, animated TV series and movies, merchandise, tie-in promotions, events, and the Pokémon Centers, directly managed Pokémon shops. The details and insights gained from this visit helped us understand the deeply thoughtful and principled approach to the management and deployment of the Pokémon Company’s IP and characters.

During IDJ we heard from President Tsunekazu Ishihara who spoke to us about the history of the company and its mission “to enrich both the real world and the virtual world with Pokémon characters.” President Ishihara introduced us to the COO, Takato Utsunomiya, who dug deeper into this mission and what it means to be a “producer” of Pokémon. Mr. Utsunomiya reemphasized that the enterprise’s raison d’être is to sustain the Pokémon brand. He explained this concept by detailing their three mission points: “Pokémon First,” “Creative Innovation,” and “Sustainable Organization.” He showed a decision matrix with axes representing return on investment by how much an initiative helps or hurts the brand, and he explained why sometimes it’s acceptable to take on a low return project as long as it helps the brand in the long run. The Pokémon Company’s innovation goal is to go both wide and deep with consumers by pairing their accessible and recognizable IP with high engagement activities. By keeping social values in mind, they are also able to protect their products from much of the controversy that is inherent to innovative ventures. His talk was followed by a product development case from Yosuke Oshino on the development of the Pokémon Smile app which showed these principles in action. These values, combined with the subjective and objective considerations for “agreeable game design” described by Mr. Oshino, helped us understand the full picture of how and why new Pokémon products are created.
