Feeling crushed by the high cost of travel ? Getting annoyed by the throngs of tourists bringing chaos to what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation? Finding that everything you want to book is already sold out?

Here’s a good way to skirt most of these challenges: Travel during “shoulder season.”

The definition of shoulder season varies by destination, but it typically means the period of time between a region’s peak season and offseason. This timespan can last months or just weeks. For instance, if a place’s peak season is summer and its offseason is winter, then the shoulder season would be spring and fall. Alternatively, a place may experience peak travel during a holiday weekend, but demand will drop off the weekend before or after — these times can also be considered shoulder season.

Here are five reasons why shoulder season is the best time to travel.

1. Expect to pay lower prices than for peak season travel

If you can travel on the days no one else wants to, you'll generally save. For example, the holiday season is typically one of the busiest times of the year to fly .

Flights averaged 57% more expensive when booked for the week of Christmas 2024 versus the last week of August (which is shoulder season in many places as kids return to school). That’s according to a NerdWallet analysis conducted in August 2024 of nearly 600 airfares taken from the most popular routes in the U.S. across nine major airlines.

2. You won't compete as much for coveted reservations

Those higher flight prices typically stem from supply and demand — which means demand is higher during peak season.

Increased interest leads to more competition across the board, whether for a hotel room at the price point you want or the chance to nab tickets to that concert. And that’s only scratching the surface. Restaurants are more likely to get filled, airplanes to fly with fewer empty seats and wait times to get longer, and the likelihood of a complimentary upgrade diminishes.

Book during shoulder season and you’ll vie with fewer folks for your top experiences.

3. You won't see as many offseason closures

While demand is high during peak season, sometimes demand drops so low during offseason that the places you want to visit aren’t even open. Boat tour operators might board up for the winter, and charming ski town cafes could close for the summer.

For example, January in Utah’s Zion National Park averages about 16% of the number of visitors that come during peak season in July, and most tourists will have a rough go. Ice forces certain trails to close, some roads become inaccessible to drivers, and the museum and services like shuttle buses aren’t available.

Instead, consider a trip during the September shoulder season, when crowds are at only about 85% of the park’s peak but most amenities are available. Plus, you’ll benefit from mild weather.

Around the world, hotels often take the offseason to do renovations, so the pool might become off-limits. Airlines typically cut back routes, so you’ll have less flexibility on what day or time you can fly.

But the shoulder season is less likely to entail such challenges. Travel before summer crowds arrive and you might be pleasantly surprised with a newly renovated hotel room. Head to the mountains just after the winter holidays to take advantage of still-snowy slopes without as many skiers on them.

4. Weather is generally pretty good

The shoulder season likely won’t bring the sweltering heat or storms that come with a region’s offseason. And in some cases, the weather during shoulder season is actually better than peak season.

Summer at Florida’s theme parks is often humid and muggy — and that’s before you add in the crowds of out-of-school kids. During shoulder season, you might forgo sunny summer days on the beach, but you’ll typically get temperate weather, not to mention a less sweaty smile in that photo with your favorite character.

Shoulder season in the Rocky Mountains might not entail the romanticism of white powder snow surrounding a cozy cabin. But, you can pack light and leave the parka at home.

5. You could more likely experience unique, local events

Tourist hot spots typically want year-round crowds, so they often host events, concerts and other festivities that don’t occur at times when crowds would be large anyway.

Theme park food festivals are among the most common shoulder season delights. Southern California theme park Knott’s Berry Farm typically hosts its annual boysenberry festival from March to April. Disney hardly has an off-season, but May is basically the shoulder season (filling the gap between spring break and summer). And May is one of the best times to visit Disney , with special events like a Star Wars-themed festival and Pixar Fest to create buzz.

Hawaii comes alive in the fall with festivals spanning multiple islands, including the annual Waikiki Ho‘olaule‘a, which is a giant block party on Oahu, and the Kauai Mokihana Festival, a weeklong celebration of Hawaiian culture.

Due to its sheer size and range of landscapes, regional climates across the US vary dramatically from season to season.

Southern California generally enjoys a pleasant year-round climate — mild in winter and hot in summer, making it a great place to visit in any season. Northern California, around San Francisco, is cooler and can be prone to sea mists along the fog belt.

Hawaii enjoys a tropical climate that’s warm and inviting year-round.

The South and Southwest experience hot, humid summers but mild winters and great conditions for outdoor activities in the spring. Hurricanes can affect the Gulf and east coasts most commonly from August to October, while tornadoes can be a common phenomenon in southern and central states in the summer months.

Temperatures in the Rocky Mountains change with altitude, but summers here are generally warm and pleasant, while winters often see heavy snow making travel planning tricky and unpredictable.

Month-by-month guide for traveling in the US

Visiting the US in January - March

Winter is a good time to visit the southern half of the country — including the South , California and the Southwest, with pleasant temperatures and often sunny days. It’s also a better-value and less-busy time to visit. The nights can be cold, particularly in the deserts, but temperatures are ideal during the day for outdoor activities such as hiking and sailing.

Events & Festivals

• Mardi Gras, New Orleans’ biggest festival, culminates on the day before Ash Wednesday, with the largest and liveliest parades and street parties in the preceding few days.
• Saint Patrick's Day (March 17): The Saint Patrick's Day parade is a celebration of all things Irish. Join the party as the city and the river turns green and pints of Guinness can be enjoyed in every bar in Chicago.

Visiting the US in April

If you’re planning to visit the South or Southwest, April is an excellent time to travel, with warm, sunny weather. The national parks, forests and wetlands are lush and vibrant, wildlife is more active, and a variety of events take place in towns and cities as they emerge from winter.

• Baseball season (April to September): The baseball season is long enough to be accessible to many visitors. Catch a game in Chicago, Boston or New York for a quintessential American experience.
• Ski season in Colorado and Utah (April): The peak of the ski season in Colorado and Utah is in April, with more than enough snow covering the ground, coupled with sunny days and pleasant temperatures.

Visiting the US in May

Spring has arrived in most of the country. Sunny days reveal vivid-green vegetation, attractive prairie grasslands and wildlife newly emerged from winter. Mild temperatures mean you can explore in comfort and enjoy outdoor activities.

While Pacific storms can bring Hawaii most of its rainfall in May, the southwestern states are typically warm and dry, making it a good time to explore their natural landscapes. 

• Memorial Day takes place on the last weekend of the month and is recognized with parades and commemoration ceremonies.

Visiting the US in June

June offers the best of both worlds in the northern half of the country, as you can experience warm, sunny days without the crowds of summer. The Rockies are perhaps at their most majestic, national parks are verdant and full of life, while in cities, you can take advantage of the weather at outdoor cafés and restaurants, in parks and gardens, and by following lakeside trails and cycle paths.

It’s also a good time to visit the south, where temperatures are ideal for outdoor and water-based activities like biking, hiking, fishing or sailing. 

• Wildflowers in Colorado (June): The mountains and valleys of Colorado are carpeted in bright wildflowers in full bloom at this time of year.

Visiting the US in July - August

Summer in the northern states is the most comfortable time to explore the outdoors, with many of the region's national parks at their very best. Take a hike into Montana's Glacier National Park , see the steaming geysers of Yellowstone or stay on a ranch in the Rockies. 

In the southern half of the country, the hot summer months are filled with outdoor events, including fourth of July fireworks. The southwest attracts a dry heat and the south eastern states see humidity soar, inviting occasional thunderstorms to break up the heat.

• July 4th celebrations: A day of barbecues, fireworks, carnivals and fun events across the country to recognize the Declaration of Independence.

Visiting the US in September - October

The summer crowds have started to disperse in the southern half of the country by September, making this a quieter, better-value time to visit. However, storms are more prevalent along the eastern and central coast, with the hurricane season producing wet and windy weather. You’ll find less risk of storms further west, where temperatures are still pleasant and it’s a good time to explore the national parks of Utah and California . Meanwhile, Hawaii basks in warm, sunny days and you’ll find fewer visitors than in the summer months.

Visiting the US in November - December

Colder, shorter days mark the arrival of winter, with many areas in the northern half of the country experiencing their first snowfall in November. In southern states, the end of the year is milder and can be inclement in places, with rain showers possible. However, temperatures in the South are still pleasant. 

There’s a noticeable air of anticipation across the country as Thanksgiving, and then Christmas, approaches, when travel becomes much busier.

• New Year’s Eve celebrations: See fireworks filling the sky and enjoy parties across the US.
• Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November): A national holiday giving thanks for the harvest and the preceding year, marked with traditional parades in many cities.

Here’s when passengers will pay the least for flights this fall, experts say — and the savings start next week.

September means summer’s ending, but savvy travelers know the coming month is also is the beginning of shoulder season — that quietly magical moment when travel becomes more affordable, destinations can be less crowded, the skies a little friendlier again.

But, according to Expedia , there are times within the upcoming season where the deals are really at their best — the week of September 1 for example, experts at the third-party booking site revealed in a new fall travel report.

During that entire week, airfares are averaging $100 down from the peak of summer, as many of the travelers crowding global airports just weeks ago are suddenly grounded by work and school schedules.

Those lucky enough to have the freedom to move can clean up, deals-wise. And if you are interested in international travel, the week of Oct. 20 will bring average overseas fares down by a whopping $260 a pop from summer’s worst, the pros stated.

Looking for total quiet? The week of November 10th — during the ever-predictable, pre-Thanksgiving lull — should be deathly still in many destinations.

So will pretty much every Monday during the season, the number crunchers nudged, suggesting that to save big, travel on the first weekday above all others. That could save you about 15% on a domestic flight. Saturdays were the runner up for cabin elbow room — and savings.

And where to go? Spots like Tulum, Mexico, Mallorca, Spain and Tokyo —  the latter boasting a surprisingly favorable exchange rate right now — are trending, the site said.

And last but not least on the hot list, there’s Indianapolis, where interest is up a whopping 120%, but there’s reportedly a reason for that — Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” is stopping by in November.

If getting a lot of bang for your buck is more important than where your affordable flight lands, there are three destinations that US travelers should be keeping an eye on, the site said — give some thought to Las Vegas, Cancun and Paris, presumably taking it rather easy after spending a hectic summer in the spotlight.

Also keep an eye on Honolulu, Seattle, London and Dublin, Expedia urged — all are seeing a 15% or more drop in average airfares in the coming weeks.

“Regardless of the destination, fall is a fantastic time to travel and there’s still time to plan a getaway,” Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands public relations said in a release.

“The week following Labor Day is the best time for domestic airfare deals, while Oct. 20 is the best for international trips — and for the start of leaf-peeping season.”

A sizzling strip of coastal desert. Endless snow-capped Andean summits. A humid expanse of rainforest mazed by mighty rivers. These three types of terrain form a triumvirate of completely different climates, ensuring there is no bad time of year to visit  Peru .  

This is a tradition-entrenched, festival-focused land, with at least one vibrant celebration a week to add color to your trip. Whether you're a city lover stopping in the famous foodie capital of  Lima  or an adventurer heading for the Inca Trail, you'll find what you need to plan your perfect Peru vacation here.

June to August is the best time for Andean and Amazonian adventures

Most Western travelers prefer Peruvian winter. This isn't only because it coincides with their main holiday period, but because the crystal-clear weather casts the Andes , where the country’s most popular tourist sights beckon, in sharp sunlight. 

Fascinating festivals also occur, and the tantalizing trekking ground is dry underfoot. Adventure season is in full swing.

The ancient Incan capital of Cuzco grabs the most attention, along with the nearby Sacred Valley , where picturesque, Inca-ruin-dotted gorges invitingly thread through to the greatest site of them all: Machu Picchu .

The big treks – especially the Inca Trail , but others in Sacred Valley and those in snow-bedaubed Cordilleras Huayhuash and Blanca – are also irresistibly beautiful in the brilliant sunshine, but it's peak hiking season and they do get very busy.

June brings an array of fabulous fiestas, which enliven thoroughfares in Cuzco and other regional towns on a near-daily basis, the most notable being Inti Raymi, an Inca celebration of the winter solstice.

Further south down the Andes, Lake Titicaca glitters like a blue jewel, with tempting tradition-rich islands. The Selvámonos festival kicks off in Oxapampa at the end of the month and its live music and cultural celebrations are a wonderful way to spend a week in the valley.

It's dry season in the Amazon Basin  too – July is as dry as it gets in the Amazon, even though it's never truly dry there! The sunnier weather in the cloud forest lures birdlife out into the open, including the bright orange-red Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, which mates at this time.

Down in the low jungle, wildlife is easier to spy than on the riverbanks, and forays down rivers like the Tambopata, near Puerto Maldonado , yield especially diverse sightings.

Lower water levels mean excellent whitewater rafting conditions: the Apurimac, near Cuzco, and the Tambopata are ideal for rapids-riding. Locals take to the streets in Paucartambo in mid-July to celebrate La Virgen del Carmen with music, dancing and colorful costumes – it's like a mini Mardi Gras.

September to November is best for quiet hikes and surfing without crowds

It's shoulder season everywhere, particularly in the Andes, where clear sunny days linger through September. For trekkers who prefer to have the mountains to themselves, this is the best time to go – utter solitude beckons on many hiking routes .

The Inca Trail is always well-trodden, but alternatives such as the Salkantay Trek, where you traverse a 4630m (15,190ft) pass loftier than any point on the Inca Trail, allow you to lose the crowds.

September also marks the end of the jungle’s dry season, so it's a good time to try rainforest trekking or wildlife-watching on a boat trip from Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado before the spring rains descend and make travel trickier.

As the action in the interior decreases, it's pre-peak season on the coast. Toward late spring, the thick garúa (coastal fog) that's been enveloping Lima since July begins to lift, but it's still worth visiting Peru’s dynamic gastronomic capital earlier. 

Temperatures are rising along the country’s sandy beaches, but the masses have not yet checked in. By November, waves at Peru’s best surfing spots – including the home of the planet’s longest left wave at Puerto Chicama – are approaching their cresting best. 

Día de los Muertos is celebrated all over the country at the start of the month. Though this occasion is about loved ones who have passed away, the atmosphere is anything but somber – it's a celebration of love and life.

December to February is the best time for beach lovers

This is the season to see Peru’s magnificent beaches at their best. Sunbathing on the searingly warm northern beaches is delightful – temperatures routinely hover in the 30°C to 40°C (86°F to 104°F) realm, and crowds flock to see-and-be-seen resorts like trendy Máncora .

Cusco hosts the biggest celebrations for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 – a national holiday in Peru.

It's peak surfing season too. But for a different coastal experience, take a boat trip to the rarely glimpsed mangrove forests near Tumbes, or to the rocky sealife sanctuary of Islas Ballestas near Paracas, where sea lion pups are born in January.

From Paracas, it's a straight shot inland to Peru’s most colossal dunes at Huacachina – sandboarding down is the coastal region’s greatest adrenalin rush. Lima is largely garúa -free, so capitalize and try activities like paragliding over the city.

Inland, the wet season is at its height, and the Inca Trail is closed through February. Carnaval  kicks off at the end of February and Latin America's biggest party is celebrated in style across the entire country.

March to May is best for budget travelers and festival fanatics

With the exception of the riotous pre-Easter revelry of Semana Santa (Holy Week), this is a wallet-friendly time to visit Peru. Summer’s manic crush of visitors is over, the coast retains pleasant weather through March and deals can be struck as popular spots try to eke out their custom.

Carnaval  season in Peru continues from February into March with an explosion of color and celebrations everywhere.

It's not yet high season in the Andes or the Amazon, despite increasingly sun-kissed weather and bursts of bewitching greenery tinting the slopes, so accommodation and tours will be well below high-season tariffs.

The coastal strip entices as grapes ripen to the picking point, erupting in Ica’s wine-harvesting celebration, Fiesta de la Vendimia, in the second week of March.

Up in the mountains, against a canvas of steadily improving dry, bright weather, May can rival high season in terms of eye-popping festivals. 

Marvel at the spectacle of El Señor de Muruhua y, one of South America’s biggest pilgrimages held near Tarma, or the intriguing religious celebration of Fiesta de las Cruces, in cities like Cuzco, Ayacucho, and Lima.

Best Time to Go To Hawaii

Many people ask when the best time to visit Turkey would be and truthfully this answer depends on a number of factors. Straddling both Europe and Asia this beautiful nation has a combination of exotic flavor and cosmopolitan flair.

Being the 37th largest country in the world, it also has a diverse topography that allows you to do a wide range of activities. Are you interested in exploring ancient ruins, bathing in crystal blue waters, hiking up stunning mountains or shopping in a vibrant city?

Do you prefer to bask in the sun, or perhaps are milder temperatures are more up your alley? Are crowds something you would prefer to avoid, or would you rather visit a destination at the height of its splendor? These are all things to consider when choosing the most optimal time to visit. 

When you speak to people about visiting most tourist destinations you will often hear the terms high season, shoulder season and low season. The high season in Turkey runs from May through September.

This is the time when the temperatures can soar but along with the numbers on the thermometer, so to are the numbers of visitors who visit during this time. Because high season brings demand to its destination, accommodation rates and airfare prices are usually at its highest.

There are two shoulder seasons – on one side there is the month of April and on the other side is October through mid-November. The shoulder seasons are perhaps an ideal time to visit with lesser crowds, moderate temperatures and discounts on accommodations and airfares.

One thing to make note of, however, is that some shops, restaurants and accommodations do shut down when the high season is over so not everything will be open during this time.

Low season runs from mid-November until March and is when temperatures drop bringing the possibility of rain or snow. This is not to be said for all of Turkey, however, as the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts enjoy mild winters and are popular year-round destinations.

January & February in Turkey

January and February are fairly cold months in Turkey. Istanbul’s location near the sea makes it common for it to be especially windy during this time. If you are wanting to take a cruise on the Bosphorus, be aware that it is possible that unforeseen weather may cause cancellations.

On a positive note, because of the decline in visitors at this time, you can frequent all the amazing museums and sites with very little crowds. As you travel further inland and to the east, snow is not uncommon.

Visiting iconic places such as Cappadocia in the winter is just as beautiful as the summer. It has a different vibe with snow-topped fairy chimneys and plenty of opportunity for amazing panoramic photographs since there are far fewer people to contend with.

If skiing is an activity that interests you, perhaps traveling further north to the small ski resort of Kartalkaya in the Koroglu Mountains is a place to be. 

March & April in Turkey

In March and April, temperatures begin to rise and flowers begin to bloom. Crowds are still at minimal and accommodation and airfare rates are still fairly low. If you visit in April you will be able to see the tulips in full bloom which is a spectacle in itself as parks and gardens are bursting with vibrant colors.  

Each year at the beginning of April, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts hosts the Istanbul International Film Festival . This event celebrates the best of national and international film. It is the largest film event in Turkey with over 200 films to be seen.

In 2020, this event will take place from April 3 to 14th. 

On April 23rd, Turkey celebrates National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. Commemorating the first gathering of the Grand National Assembly which took place on April 23, 1920, this day hosts many events and festivals throughout the country.

Because Ataturk dedicated the Turkish Republic to children, school children take seats in the Parliament and symbolically govern the country. The biggest ceremony takes place at the Ataturk Mausoleum in Ankara. 

On April 25th, Canakklale is bustling with energy as thousands flock to Gallipoli to pay respects to the Australians and New Zealanders who selflessly gave their lives in 1915 by fighting for the Allied Forces against the Ottoman Empire during WWI.

The day begins with a service at dawn where veterans and their families stand in silence for two minutes, while the remainder of the day you can visit the surrounding battlefields.

Similarly the Turkish also celebrate Canakkale Naval Victory Day on March 18 each year. This is to commemorate the success of Ataturk who successfully led his troops to victory. 

As Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country it is important to make a note of when Ramadan takes place. Ramadan is the ninth month in the lunar calendar and lasts between 29 to 30 days.

Because of this calendar, the beginning of Ramadan moves backward by about 11 days each year. For 2020 Ramadan takes place from April 24th to May 23rd. This Islamic holy month is intended to bring Muslims closer to God and teach them about patience, spirituality, and humility.

Part of the observance is for Muslims to fast during daylight hours. Depending on where you are in the country you may notice slight differences.

Restaurants tend to be less busy during the day and some places that usually serve alcoholic beverages may refrain from doing so during this period.

Swimming areas will also be less crowded as people who are fasting are not allowed to swim. After sunset places like Istanbul get back into a lively atmosphere where locals head to restaurants that offer special Ramadan menus or buffets.

Tourists and non-Muslims are welcome to join in on the festivities.

May & June in Turkey

If you are like me you will also think that May and June are the best months to travel around Turkey because the weather is hot, but not at its peak. Having said this, I was there near the end of June and walking around the historical sites at times became a little unbearable.

It may be the perfect temperature to lay on a beach but when you are walking around an uncovered historical site you will have to bring a hat and sunscreen as there is very little shade. 

On May 5th & 6th is one of Turkey’s annual festivals called the Hidrellez Festival. This festival is a celebration of spring and is more often celebrated in the countryside.

To mark this occasion various ceremonies and rituals associated with nature are performed which in turn guarantee the well-being and prosperity of the family and community for the upcoming year. These rituals have cultural meanings and provide the community with a sense of identity. 

July & August in Turkey

Summer in Turkey is hot and dry and can even reach temperatures beyond 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  Swimming in the Mediterranean is a welcomed activity and coastal towns are in full swing.

This is also the peak season for cruise ships, making the beach resorts and ancient sites a bit busier. As I mentioned earlier, be conscious of the heat when visiting any of the historical sites.

With very little shade and a lot of walking, it is best to visit these sites early in the morning. As a lot of people tend to flock to the coast during the summer months, Cappadocia tends to be a little quieter.

Enjoy a majestic balloon ride high above the fairy chimneys or hike the valleys that turn into a beautiful pinkish hue. 

Every year Istanbul hosts the Istanbul Jazz Festival during the month of July. Concerts are held in different locations around the city and provide unique experiences to festival-goers by turning unconventional spots into concert venues. 

During the summer months is when the renowned Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival takes place. Aspendos is located in Antalya Province, just 2 and a half miles north of Serik and 24 miles from Antalya.

It has a unique location in a magnificent Roman amphitheater that dates back to 2nd century A.D. This open-air theater truly is phenomenal as it has perfect acoustics where sound can easily reach the last bench. 

September & October in Turkey

September and October are part of the shoulder seasons and like their spring counterparts are great months to explore Turkey. Temperatures are mild and it tends to be relatively dry. One thing to make note of is that in late October hotels and amenities start to shut down for the winter along the Mediterranean coast.

October 29th is Republic Day. This day marks the creation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. A new constitution was adopted which replaced the old constitution of the Ottoman Empire.

It is a national holiday where public administration buildings, schools, post offices as well as many small businesses remain closed. If you are trying to get around the bigger cities be aware that public transport schedules may also vary.

The day is celebrated with parades, public speeches, traditional dancing as well as fireworks. 

November & December in Turkey

Like the beginning of the year, November and December remain quite chilly throughout most of Turkey. The southern part of Turkey in the Antalya region has far warmer weather but in general, expects to dress warmer.

When traveling in January and February, there are perks to traveling to Turkey during the winter. You can take advantage of the amazing museums and sites as you don’t have to contend with the crowds. 

For 11 days in December Konya hosts the Mevlana and Whirling Dervish Festival. Thousands of people gather to commemorate the life and teachings of the 13th-century poet and Sufi mystic Rumi.

The Mevlevi Order was founded in 1273 by Rumi followers after his death. The Mevlevi believe in performing their dance and musical ceremony known as the Sama.

The Sama represents the spiritual journey of a man’s ascent to find love and truth by deserting the ego and arriving at spiritual perfection. Konya is one of Turkey’s more religiously conservative cities and because this is a spiritual event certain rules must be followed while attending the festival.

Women need to wear a headscarf and men and women are seated separately. In 2019 this event takes place from December 7th to the 17th. 

As you can see Turkey truly is a destination that you can visit all year round. With so much to see and do there is something for everyone no matter what time of year you visit.

Thailand Weather in February: Nice Weather

Similar to the weather of January, February's weather is still nice, warm, and dry.

Good weather means almost anywhere is a good place to plan your holiday.

Beautiful islands and beaches are also good places to go — Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak... All kinds of water activities enjoy ideal conditions.

Thailand Weather in March: The Heat Builds

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 20–30°C (68–86°F)
• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 28–35°C (82–95°F)
• Southern Thailand (Phuket): 28–34°C (82–93°F)

March is still a fabulous month to visit Thailand, especially in the first half of the month, though it starts to heat up in March. It's advisable to stay hydrated, especially in the central region with warmer temperatures.

During this season, you can go literally anywhere in Thailand thanks to the low rainfall. Water-related activities in the southern islands are enjoyable.

Thailand Weather in April: Hottest

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–35°C (77–95°F)
• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (86–97°F)
• Southern Thailand (Phuket): 29–35°C (84–95°F)

April is the hottest month in Thailand. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 30°C (95°F) all day and night!

The heat in Chiang Mai during April gets even more oppressive than in Bangkok. Chiang Rai is slightly cooler by 1 or 2°C but is still hot nonetheless.

For beach lovers, you are almost guaranteed some blue skies and clear seas. Staying in a beach resort will be at least 4 or 5°C cooler than in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Festivals and Events

Thai New Year (Songkran Festival) is the biggest, longest, and most enjoyable festival in Thailand. It is a 3-day-long water fight that takes place throughout the country!

Thailand Weather in May: The Rains Start

• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 31–36°C (88–97°F)

May is still hot and starts to be wet with it, as Thailand begins its rainy season. The rainy season is in full swing by the end of the month.

The weather in Bangkok and other cities in May starts to get extremely humid. Koh Samui is better than Phuket and Krabi to go because rainfall during May is much lower on the Gulf of Thailand than on the Andaman Coast.

May sees the end of the high season, which means that prices on hotels and flights begin to drop, bringing great value for visitors.

Thailand Weather in June: Wet and Hot

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 28–38°C (82–100°F)
• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 29–35°C (84–95°F)

Thailand can expect an average of 15 to 22 days of rain in June. However, the rain is usually short-lived, occurring in short bursts in the afternoon or evening.

This tourism low season is the best time to travel to Thailand for prices and quietness, with more choices of accommodation and various different promotions.

For beachgoers, Ko Samui and Hua Hin are the best destinations as they are not so affected by the rains at this time.

Thailand Weather in July: Wet

July experiences heavy rainfall, so be prepared for wet conditions.

The southern islands are affected by the monsoon in July, which brings heavy rains and turbulent waves to the west coast.

However, the east coast (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, etc) experiences fewer showers during this season and has relatively good weather in July. You can still enjoy sunny days at the beach on these islands.

Some urban areas, such as Bangkok, remain hot and wet. Staying refreshed with indoor swimming pool visits and cold showers will help relieve any discomfort.

Thailand Weather in August: Wet

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 27–35°C (81–95°F)
• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 27–33°C (81–91°F)

Like July, August is one of the best times to visit Koh Samui and the surrounding islands. Though there are some brief rains, it is much better than the other side of the peninsula in Phuket, Krabi, Koh Chang, and the Phi Phi Islands.

A trip to Thailand in August can be a cost-effective opportunity to enjoy scenic spots and quiet beaches without the crowds.

Thailand Weather in September: Wettest

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 25–32°C (77–89°F)
• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 26–32°C (79–89°F)

September is the wettest month in Thailand. But actually, only some rural areas are significantly affected by the rains during the wet season, such as the mountainous north around Chiang Mai.

Destinations like Bangkok offer travelers plenty to do and see, even when it's raining outside. Koh Samui is recommended for beach holidays in September as it is less affected by the rains.

Rains do not disrupt the travel experience too much for some, as it seldom rains all day long.

Thailand Weather in October: End of the Rains

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 22–30°C (72–86°F)

Thailand experiences high or very high rainfall again in October, except in Northern Thailand where the rainy season already tails off to moderate levels.

The monsoon rain eases off with less rainfall and lower temperatures by the end of October in most of Thailand. However, Koh Samui begins its peak rainy season at this time.

Some visitors come to Thailand at the end of October to wait for the annual grand Thailand Lantern Festival in early November. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are the main venues.

Thailand Weather in November: Peak Season Starts

• Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai): 18–28°C (64–82°F)
• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 23–30°C (73–86°F)

Thailand's peak travel season starts from November. The rains and heat are gone or going from most of the country.

You can venture out without any worries of getting drenched, EXCEPT on the east coast, which receives a massive half a meter of rain in November.

Islands on the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Similan Islands, etc.) are ideal places to go, by contrast, with only moderate rainfall.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with low rainfall, are the most popular cities in November for the Thailand Lantern Festivals .

Thailand Weather in December: Coolest

• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 22–31°C (72–88°F)
• Southern Thailand (Phuket): 23–39°C (73–84°F)

December is the coolest month in Thailand, but it's still warm everywhere but in the cool/mild mountainous north.

December is a great time to visit most areas in Thailand (Koh Samui is still in rainy season though) and is also the country's busiest month for tourism.

There are celebrations on Christmas and New Year's Eve in Thailand. Shopping malls in Thailand have big sales from late December to early January. If you're planning a trip to Thailand over the Christmas and New Year period, try to book as early as possible. Popular hotels are usually booked up 3-6 months in advance.

You’re an off-season traveler, always looking for somewhere different and unexpected. Your favorite places are those others might dismiss, but you see an insider-ish appeal that’s easily overlooked. Even better, when you choose to hit a spot out of season, there’s likely a bargain making you equal parts thrifty and original.

Read on for our 12 suggestions for an off-season destination each month, whether it be Venice at its most romantic or a sneaky way to see San Francisco when the weather might actually be good.

January: Marrakech

Cool and crisp aren’t two ideas readily associated with Morocco’s heady, glamorous, and overheated city. But come to Marrakech in January, and you’ll actually enjoy wandering around the souk or Jardin Majorelle, rather than struggling with high temps (that reach the 90s in the summer) and wall-to-wall crowds. In January, expect sunny days in the mid-60s and cool nights that get down to 40 degrees. Those clear skies are ideal for stargazing, too, so head up to the Atlas Mountains 60 miles or so away for nighttime adventures; after a devastating earthquake in September 2023, the High Atlas Mountains region is recovering and has bounced back thanks in large part to tourism. Remember that it’s very cold after sunset, as is typical for a desert, so pack a proper winter jacket and a fleece, some cashmere, or both. If you’re curious and a seasoned skier, try a few runs in Oukaimeden , a ski resort in the mountains—know, however, that facilities are basic.

February: Venice

Come to Venice in February, and it’s like stepping into a Henry James novel, or at least back in time. The faded glamour of La Serenissima is only burnished by the dark evenings, damp weather, and lack of visitors, which means you might end up idling alone in a campo without risk of your reverie being disturbed by an umbrella-toting guide. If it rains or snows, duck into a local café for a glass of reviving prosecco, and snuggle up against the chill—the ultimate romantic gesture.

Locals may grumble about acqua alta, or high water, the nickname for the regular floods that hit the city in winter, but for visitors, it’s a quirky delight. Streets will be filled with tables that form makeshift sidewalks in a few feet of water and walking around requires thigh-high plastic waders. Most hotels will have them on hand this month; just ask. Once you’re wearing them, we dare you not to splash around with toddler-like abandon. And plus, it’s Carnival the first half of the month, a great excuse to put on a jewel-studded mask.

March: Kenya

Many vacationers go on safari during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer, but wet season—the green season, really, which starts in March—is a chance to see the countryside of safari-rich countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Botswana at their most abundant: Smells are intense as the plants and trees burst into life, and the torrential, but fleeting, rainstorms soak the landscape in spectacular fashion. Most importantly, you’re likely to see baby animals; this is calving season for wildebeests, zebra, and many other species.

April: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

This month, elk begin to migrate from the National Elk Refuge here to their summer home up north, so expect to see them idling everywhere—along highways, in yards, and, of course, the plains of Grand Teton National Park . It’s a chance to see the same thing happen across the countryside, as wildlife emerges from hibernation and bursts into life; come for fly fishing (the season opens on April 1), and you’ll see the water teem with fish and be jostling with far fewer anglers (be patient, as snow runoffs can spike some days). April 1 is also Gaper Day, the spoofish end-of-season slopefest when skiers dress up in impractical outfits to hit the slopes one last time—think ponchos, jeans, or Hawaiian shirts—and end the day with a raucous après-ski evening.

May: Kaua’i, Hawai’i

Spring is the Goldilocks time for Hawai‘i, a place where there’s no weather-driven low season since the climate is consistent almost year-round. May, though, is that just-right time: no more winter rains, surf conditions remaining impressive, and the extra jolt of summer heat hasn’t begun.

Crowds are thinner and attractions like the Kalalau Trail are easier to navigate—it’s much drier than in summertime when conditions can be slippery. Boat operators begin their season this month (wrapping up in September), so see the Na Pali coastline from the water: Try a sunset charter from Holo-Holo , with abundant drinks and a delicious supper from $210.

June: Park City, Utah

Ski destinations across the world struggle to gain traction with visitors when the pistes aren’t powdery—a shame, as any outdoorsy type can relish Park City even when it’s warm. Opt to hike and mountain bike many trails in the summer, when lift tickets are much cheaper: An adult scenic lift day pass is $39 rather than hundreds of dollars as it would be in peak winter ski season. Resorts like Deer Valley throw events to lure visitors, such as a series of free summer concerts, and the farmers’ market runs every Wednesday from this month through October. A bonus for Park City in particular: Winter Olympians train here off-season, so you can watch them at the water ramps and slides around town.

July: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Who needs the overcrowded, overpriced, and often sweltering Mediterranean in summer? Puerto Vallarta is the perfect substitute, with appealing beaches and plenty of plush hotels. Even better, it’s a short-haul, direct flight to most major hubs stateside. The weather is glorious most of the season; when it rains, mostly in the midafternoon, use that downpour as an excuse to take a Spanish-style siesta after a long, indulgent lunch.

Charter a yacht , Med-style, for a day or more out on the water. Underwater activities like scuba diving and snorkeling are superb in and around Los Arcos, or “the Arches,” a collection of gray granite islands about six miles off the coast that form a protected marine park.

August: Nordic countries

Yes, technically, it might get a little dusk-like close to midnight in the northern reaches of Scandinavia come midsummer, as if the night is trying to assert control over the sky. It never succeeds, though: In August, by between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m., it’ll be bright and morning-like again, a disconcerting but thrillingly disruptive experience.

Head to the edges of the Arctic Circle in Sweden and watch golfers tee off at Björkliden Golf Course , which runs for 24 hours a day this month. As for Finland, the sauna ’s spiritual home, go for a bracing midnight swim and then heat up in a nearby cabin. Brave the steam rising from the heated coals (known as löyly ) and soak in summer’s end.

If you really want to escape the heat, go even further above the Arctic Circle to Lofoten, an archipelago in far northern Norway. Float through the fjords or cycle around the islands, moving from one quaint fishing village to the next. Their red-painted wooden cabins are backed by craggy peaks and overlook glassy (ice-cold) lakes.

September: San Francisco, California

There is a month when the weather in San Francisco doesn’t careen through four seasons in a single day. July and August can be particularly bad offenders, but come this month, and you’ll be sharing a locals’ secret. September is when you won’t need to pack sunscreen, an umbrella, and a scarf in your day bag. The balmy, breezy temps stay consistent and (mostly) sunny all month, usually in the mid-70s. Given that San Francisco is a city where walking is both the easiest and most interesting way to get around, that’s a major plus. A handful of fun citywide events take place this month, too, like the Shakespeare Festival’s free performances in McLaren Park, the Autumn Moon Festival in Chinatown, and Flower Piano concerts in the botanical gardens. September also brings the kink-friendly Folsom Street Fair, but fair warning that certain parts are not for the faint of heart.

October: Aruba

The Caribbean is sadly synonymous with hurricanes in the fall , which rip through the region regularly between August and November. There are parts, though, that sit firmly outside the Hurricane Belt—the zone between 20 and 35 degrees north in latitude. One of the places that’s free from imminent impact each year? The former Dutch colony of Aruba, a 75-square-mile island close to the Venezuelan coast in the southernmost reaches of this region. It’s a can’t-fail beach vacation with brochure-like golden sands rimmed with palm trees: Try Eagle Beach for idling, water sports on Arashi Beach, and snorkeling off Malmok Beach.

November: Provence, France

Come in late fall to this bucolic corner of southern France and you can gorge on two delicacies at once. It’s truffle season, and up to 80 percent of the black varieties of this tuber that grow in France originate right here, in Vaucluse. Head to the Friday morning market in Carpentras to watch them sell for prices that crypto-bros might envy, or try one of the tasting menus at a local restaurant that incorporates them into a multi-course meal—it’s pricey but unforgettable to dine at Sevin, right in the center of Avignon next to the Palais des Papes.

It’s also olive season, a much more affordable treat: From roughly October 15 to November 15, you can join a tour to pick your own and combine it with a light Provençal picnic for about €27 (US$30) per person.

December: Dubrovnik, Croatia

Forget mother of dragons: In December, Dubrovnik is all about the mother of Jesus, as the Game of Thrones –famed filming hub is festooned with a Mitteleuropa-style Christmas in its cobbled old town. Come here to taste local delicacies (look for orahnjaca , a yeasty walnut roll cake) and soak up the ambience with outdoor concerts, carol singing, and plenty of souvenirs.

December 6 is a highlight of the calendar—it’s St. Nicholas Day, when Santa leaves gifts for good kids, and the hairy demon Krampus instead leaves a stick or two for anyone who’s been naughty. Stay around until New Year’s Eve, and you can celebrate with a three-day music festival that climaxes with a symphony performance on January 1. All that, and the weather is likely to remain balmy enough that you won’t need anything more than a light sweater.

Best and Worst Times to Visit Aruba

The best time to go to Aruba is most months of the year except during the peak of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Aruba weather makes this southern Caribbean island one of the most attractive vacation spots in the region.

That’s because the island of Aruba lies at the southern edge of the Caribbean hurricane belt. So it avoids most of the storms and hurricanes that roll through the Caribbean from the Atlantic Ocean each year.

As a result, the best time to visit Aruba is January through September for low risk of rain. But some months are better than others for comfortable temperatures.

Best Times to Go

Some people claim that any time of the year is a good time to spend a week in Aruba or cruise there. I can assure you from multiple visits to the island that “any time” is not the best time to go.

Aruba’s average high temperature during the day reaches the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit or about 30 Celsius most months of the year. It often climbs into the 90s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius during the summer.

Water temperatures are sometimes a bit cool in the winter months of January and February. My family found this out during a visit in February when few people went into the chilly water. Water temperatures dip into the 70s Fahrenheit or low 20s Celsius during the winter, which is often borderline comfortable.

But January and February also have the fewest clouds of the year, according to the Aruba Meteorological Service.

Go then if you want to get away from northern winters, but know that the water is not as warm as later in the year.

The rain chart below shows the number of days that it rains (in blue) and total rainfall by inches (in orange). It shows more rainfall in October through December. That means the best months to go for warm temperatures and low risk of rain are March through September.

Average Rainfall

The Aruby rainy season goes from October through December when rainfall averages more than three inches a month. October through December are the worst months to visit Aruba.

Rain is not normally a factor in Aruba because the island is arid and averages only 16 inches a year. Rainfall reaches more than three inches in October through December, but the totals are still low compared to the rest of the Caribbean.

For January through September, rain averages only about one inch a month. These are the better months to visit.

Despite a modest climb in rainfall in September, Aruba has a steep dropoff in visits during that month because of the fear of Caribbean hurricanes.

The chart also shows that someone who goes to Aruba in March through May will have a 7 percent chance of getting rain. Someone who goes in December will have a 37 percent chance.

Hurricane Season

The Aruba hurricane season is brief and mild. It lasts only three months from September to November and rarely results in a nearby tropical storm of hurricane.

Aruba , Bonaire and Curaçao lie on the southern fringes of the hurricane belt.

On average, only one major tropical cyclone passes over or just south of the islands every 100 years, according to the Meteorological Service of the Netherland Antilles and Aruba.

A tropical cyclone passes within about 100 miles of the islands once every four years. The storms mostly pass to the north without causing serious bad weather. But they bring an increase in rain and cloud cover.

The odds of being in Aruba at the same time as a nearby cyclone are extremely small. Although visiting the island in September or October during the height of the Caribbean hurricane season increases the risk of experiencing bad weather, the chances of decent weather are still fairly high.

Average Air Temperatures

Aruba has one of the warmest climates in the Caribbean with an average monthly high temperature of nearly 89 degrees Fahrenheit, says the Meteorological Service of Netherland Antilles and Aruba .

The average monthly high temperatures rise above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius in August and September, making those two months less comfortable for shopping, hiking and other land activities, especially midday. The beach sand also gets very hot.

Inland temperatures with protection from strong trade winds will be warmer than coastal temperatures, even though the island is small.

The average low temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit or 25 Celsius and varies from this average only about two degrees each month.

Average Water Temperatures

For people who like swimming and sunning, the Aruba water temperatures average 81 degrees. Again, they vary slightly each month.

During the winter, the water is usually warm enough for swimming. But sometimes it is cool enough in the morning to keep swimmers in the water only for short periods of time.

Water temperatures almost always hover between the average daily high temperatures and the average daily lows.

Water temperatures stay comfortable almost year round except sometimes in the early mornings during the winter months.

They average in the high 70s Fahrenheit and sometimes climb into the low 80s, which is balmy.

Average Monthly Weather

Aruba weather in January is warm enough and dry enough to make this month the most popular time of the year to visit the island. Visitors may find the sea water cool at times despite average high air temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius. Rainfall averages only one inch.

The next month is slightly warmer and just as dry. One February visitor found that the sea was cool enough to keep most people out of it. Some currents were comfortable and others were chilly.

Spring break from schools increases tourism to the second highest level of the year. But Aruba weather in March is nearly the same as February except for average rainfall that drops close to zero. It is a bone-dry month.

Temperatures rise again in April while total visitors decline. It’s the best month to visit so far during the year because of warming weather, warming seawater and fewer crowds on the beaches.

The month of May is another good time to visit Aruba because it has more of the same as April. Temperatures are warmer and crowds are even lighter than the previous month.

Heat starts to become a factor for Aruba. Temperatures in June average more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius for the first time of the year. The arid interior is becoming hot and uncomfortable during the afternoons, which makes land activities less enjoyable. Land lovers may want to avoid this month and the next two. June also has the second lowest number of visitors during the year.

July is the third most popular month to visit Aruba. It has weather nearly the same as June with hot temperatures and little rainfall. Heat once again is a factor for land activities, especially in the arid and treeless Arikok National Park where most of the land excursions take place.

Average temperatures stay above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in August. Tourism declines versus July. Beach sand is scorching at times, but the seawater feels like a warm bath.

The least popular month of the year to visit Aruba has weather much like the previous three with hot temperatures and an average of only one inch of rain. September is the worst month of the Caribbean hurricane season, so visitors avoid most of the region. It also is the hottest month of the year.

If Aruba has a rainy season, it begins in October and brings an average of only three inches of rain. The total is similar to many other islands during their dry season. Some visitors avoid the island because October is the second most active month of the region’s hurricane season.

The second month of the rainy season usually delivers another three inches of rain. The number of days that it rains during the month jumps to 11.

Aruba weather in December continues the same trend as the previous two months. Rainfall is higher than normal at three inches. The average high temperature is 87 Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius and warm enough for pleasant days on the beach. But the month has the highest number of days that it usually rains at an average of nearly 12 out of 31 total.

Weather Impact on Visitors by Month

Caribbean tourism has definite peaks and valleys that depend heavily on the weather and on family schedules based on when children are on vacation from school.

Aruba is no different from most destinations in that the fall months usually have the lowest number of visitors because of concerns about storms and hurricanes.

The chart above clearly shows that visits to Aruba reach a low point in September because of the risk of more rain.

But smart travelers also know that it’s often a time of deeper discounts in hotels and resorts, and they will look for last-minute vacation deals while keeping an eye on the weather forecast at the same time.

A few other months are worth considering because they have fewer tourists and decent weather, such as May and especially June, which has one of the lowest levels of vacationers out of the entire year.

Vacation planners who want to improve their chances of good weather should look at March through August because of comfortable temperatures and lower chances of rain, storms or hurricanes.

August and September will be more uncomfortable because of warmer temperatures. October, November and December have higher chances of rain and the rare chance of either a tropical storm or hurricane.

Visitors can rely on warm temperatures throughout the year. But they can’t always count on avoiding storms and hurricanes, especially in the fall.

It is highly unlikely that a hurricane or storm will pass over Aruba. It is slightly more likely that one will pass nearby and even more likely that the island will have fewer dry days than usual during the fall months.

The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2022

From far-flung destinations to hometown favorites, 2022 is the year to get back out there and turn your dream trips into reality.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Planning new adventures as a new year approaches is always a thrill, but finding the best places to visit in 2022 is unique. After two years of border closures, cruise cancellations, and travel restrictions galore , 2022 is the year we hope to get back out there, uninhibited (albeit vaccinated and COVID tested ), return to our favorite destinations, and cross new ones off our lists.

Though the hospitality industry was hit hard by the pandemic, many properties used the forced downtime to renovate rooms, add new amenities, and expand outdoor spaces to offer even more once guests return. 2022 is when many travelers will venture further from home, and even overseas, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, finally reaping the benefits of these valiant efforts.

Although COVID variants remain, regulations are still evolving, and precautions must still be taken, many of the destinations we chose for 2022 offer what we believe travelers are looking for in a post-pandemic world, from hotels with private accommodations to destinations teeming with fresh-air activities . Others, like Las Vegas, are for those who are ready and raring to make up for all the social time they missed — with a few splashy headliners, including Adele and the Raiders, thrown in for good measure.

As cruising makes its comeback , we included unforgettable places to see by water, from Antarctica to the Nile, and as hard-hit destinations like Italy and Asia recover, we found the buzziest reasons to return. Of course we didn't forget about all the stateside gems we got to know while domestic travel was surging, from Alaska and California to Florida and Michigan.

Our 2022 list, organized alphabetically, doesn't hold back, with aspirational trips as far away as India, Mozambique, Qatar, and even space — but we're also including hometown favorites, like Walt Disney World and its new Star Wars hotel ; the wellness retreats of beautiful Sedona; and the simple pleasures of small-town, farm-to-table living in Franklin, Tennessee. Because no matter what type of trip you've been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2022 into the year you get back out there and make it a reality.

1. Abruzzo, Italy

Stretching from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea on the peninsula's southeastern side, Abruzzo, Italy has long been one of the country's most overlooked destinations despite its unspoiled villages, picturesque Trabocchi Coast, and stunning natural escapes. Over the past few years, however, it has gone from a sleepy underdog to an ambitious harbinger of slow travel, sustainable gastronomy, and conscious hospitality. Villa Corallo , a 19th-century mansion near Civitella del Tronto was transformed into a five-star hotel in 2019. Dimore Montane , an eco-lodge opened in 2020 in Majella National Park, marries glamping with environmentally-friendly facilities with a zero waste policy. Meanwhile, restaurants like Bottega Culinaria in San Vito Chietino and Materia Prima in Castel di Sangro are redefining the region as one of Italy's most exciting food hotspots for their innovative and sustainable takes on local produce and traditional dishes (in case Niko Romito's three-Michelin-starred Reale wasn't enough). And completing construction this Spring is Via Verde dei Trabocchi: a cycling and pedestrian path along the Adriatic sea that's being built on a disused railway route. — Marianna Cerini

With many international borders closed over the last two years, many eager U.S. travelers' eyes turned to Alaska. The vast state, famous for its towering, snow-capped peaks, pristine wilderness, massive national parks, and colorful locals, made for a dynamic destination with no passport required. But as borders reopen, interest in the 49th state is showing no signs of slowing down. Alaska's tourism board said early forecasts are projecting that more than 1.57 million cruise ship passengers could visit southeast Alaska in summer 2022. That's an 18% jump from 2019, the previous record year. Many perennial favorite cruise lines , like Holland America, will be returning to full strength after a non-existent 2020 and abbreviated 2021. Others, like Windstar Cruises, UnCruise, and Hurtigruten are rolling out fresh itineraries or are launching new ships. On dry land, Alaska is set to see myriad new offerings and events. In Juneau, the Sealaska Heritage Institute will open their Arts Campus (where visitors will be able to learn about Alaska Native art and culture) and will host Celebration , one of the largest gatherings of Indigenous peoples. In Anchorage, Fur Rendezvous , Alaska's oldest and largest winter festival, will be back from Feb. 25 to March 6 (which also happens to be peak aurora season ). The event hosts activities like the Running of the Reindeer and the Outhouse Races, before culminating with the 50th running of the iconic Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race . — Bailey Berg

3. Anguilla

This easy-going Caribbean gem is simpler than ever to get to with American Airlines launching the first-ever nonstop, direct flight from Miami on Dec. 11. Private charter flights by Tradewind Aviation have also resumed service to the island. And the just-opened Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club has a fleet of jets to ferry guests from key U.S. cities. The sprawling luxury resort will include a few restaurants overseen by chef Abram Bissell, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, The NoMad, and The Modern. Quintessence , a boutique luxury resort with perks like butler service and a 4:1 staff-to-guest ratio, is opening a more affordable annex of suites called Quinn that will debut in 2022 (along with a Champagne cellar tasting room and Art Bar). New Restaurant Uchu at Belmond Cap Juluca is taking inspiration from Belmond's collection of properties in Peru. Named after the Quechuan word for spice, the menu will feature contemporary Peruvian cuisine inspired by three of the country's regions: the coast, the jungle, and the highlands. — Scott Bay

4. Antarctica

The pandemic shutdown created a compelling reason to visit Antarctica in 2022: See how the whales, seals, and penguins react after nearly two years without seeing humans. New polar-class expedition ships and new ways to get to the White Continent are reasons to pack your boots too. Viking Expeditions will be in Antarctica for the first time in 2022 with new, twin 378-passenger expedition ships. Ponant's new 270-passenger Le Commandant Charcot introduces eco-friendlier sailing, as the first hybrid-electric ship fueled by liquified natural gas (rather than heavy fuel). Quark Expeditions' long-awaited 199-passenger Ultramarine delivers exciting heli-hiking adventures via two eight-seat twin-engine helicopters. Hit a craps table in between icy exploration on the luxurious new all-suite 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor. Silversea Cruises' posh, 144-passenger, all-suite Silver Explorer returns with a debut travel option: Skip the notorious (for rough water) Drake Passage and catch a private flight directly from Chile to Antarctica to board the ship. — Fran Golden

American travelers have long loved the Bahamas for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and sunshine just about 50 miles off the coast of Florida, but there are even more reasons to visit the island nation in 2022. Baha Mar on the Island of New Providence has a brand new water park equipped with everything from a lazy river to a surf simulator, and day passes are available for purchase to those who aren't resort guests. For more rest and relaxation, journey to the outer islands of the Bahamas. While charter flights will get you exactly where you need to go, Crystal Cruises is offering a Bahamas-centric cruise that brings guests to some of the quieter and more remote islands. On its mid-July cruise, guests will embark and disembark from Nassau and then be whisked away via "6-star" service to the islands of Bimini, Great Exuma, San Salvador, and Long Island. Beyond the beach, don't forget to indulge in some local food and culture. The Island archipelago is famous for its conch, stew fish, and rock lobster. From late April through early May, Carnival is celebrated in Nassau and back after a pandemic hiatus. Keep an eye out for the famous sound and dance of the junkanoo. — Jamie Aranoff

6. Barbados

Whether you want a relaxing all-inclusive stay or a vibrant vacation filled with dining and nightlife, Barbados has you covered. Nowhere is that more evident than the pedestrian-friendly South Coast, which is teeming with new resorts and restaurants. The O2 Beach Club & Spa is an all-inclusive resort set on the white sands of Dover Beach, with three pools, six dining options, seven bars, and the Acqua spa, featuring the only hammam treatment room on the island. It joins other luxurious South Coast hotels, including Sandals and Sea Breeze Beach House . If you can pull yourself away from the resort pools, head along the coast to Worthing Square Food Garden, an outdoor food hall with 20 vendors serving dishes from around the Caribbean. Or stroll down the mile-long boardwalk for easy access to ocean-front food and drinks at local favorites like Champers, Salt Café, Tiki Bar, and Chill Café & Bar. — Kevin Gray

A favorite of adventure travelers for its rainforests and divers who explore the Great Blue Hole and expansive barrier reef, Belize offers an abundance of casual spots and a handful of luxe resorts. The latest arrival is Alaia Belize, an Autograph Collection Hotel , in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, opened mid-2021 with plans to add to its already extensive guest room, suite, and oceanfront villa accommodations. Major airlines are also recognizing the destination's potential with nonstop flights and convenient connections from most U.S. cities. In addition to United and Delta's nonstop flights from Houston and Atlanta, respectively, Alaska Airlines added nonstop service from Los Angeles and Seattle to Belize City in November, and Frontier Airlines will start weekly nonstop flights from Denver and Orlando. — Patricia Doherty

8. Budapest, Hungary

Very few places in the world capture both old-world charm and elegant modernity like Hungary's capital city, and Budapest's latest 130-room luxury hotel, Matild Palace , is a shining example. The neo-baroque palace-turned-hotel, which opened last summer in the city's District V, is a UNESCO-protected site that once housed the city's royalty. The hotel is now home to Wolfgang Punk's famed restaurant, Spago , the first of its kind in central Europe. It also hosts the Duchess bar — a rooftop "liquor library" that mixes craft cocktails using local wines and pálinka, Hungarian fruit brandy, which can be enjoyed alongside panoramic views of the Danube river. Surrounded by 22 wine regions, Budapest is a city for oenophiles. Enjoy a glass of Kékfrankos or Kadarka in the Castle District's newly opened wine bar, Takler Borbár Buda , founded by one of the country's renowned winemaking families. Don't leave the city without visiting Marlou , a biodynamic wine bar near the Hungarian State Opera, and Portobello , an unassuming coffee and natural wine bar around the corner from Matild Palace. — Stephanie Andrews

9. Burgundy, France

The region of Burgundy is known for — you guessed it — its Burgundy wine, but French wine isn't the only reason Burgundy is a must-visit in 2022. In the spring, the region's capital city of Dijon will welcome the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin (International City of Gastronomy and Wine), an expansive complex with a cooking school, a new hotel, a handful of restaurants, and a wine cellar with over 250 by-the-glass offerings. The new project is perfectly situated at the starting point of Burgundy's famed wine route — Route des Grands Crus — which runs from Dijon to Santenay and produces some of the country's most well-regarded wines, including pinot noir, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc. — Evie Carrick

10. British Virgin Islands

Within the Caribbean, the 60 islands that comprise the British Virgin Islands have long held the reputation of luxury draped in relaxation. And now it's doubling down on that brand of island spirit with Richard Branson's second private island, the 125-acre Moskito Island that opened in October and sits right across from his first BVI paradise, Necker Island (which received a serious upgrade when it reopened last year after a two-year closure). The new destination will eventually have 10 private estates that can be rented through Virgin Limited Edition , but among the ones already available are Point Estate, starting at $17,500 a night, and Oasis Estate for $19,000. But Moskito isn't the only shiny new reason to visit BVI. Proving the area's resilience following the devastation after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Saba Rock , the private island long known for its diving, went through a complete reconstruction before reopening in October; the Bitter End Yacht Club reopened in December with BVI's first over-the-water bungalows; and Oil Nut Bay will expand in early 2022 with new villas, a watersports center, and spa. The entire area is one big " Billionaire Experience ," but Formula One and entertainment mogul Flavio Briatore snagged the term for his new dining and nightlife venue in designer shopping destination Porto Cervo. The Greek Islands have long been a perennial favorite vacation destination for discerning travelers, and Crete, the largest of the 227 islands in the archipelago, deserves a spot atop your must-see list. Yes, it's a place where you can find the white-washed buildings and blue roofs you've lusted after on Instagram for years, and a spot where you can dive into the cerulean blue waters of the Mediterranean at every turn. And of course you can dig deep into both history and mythology as humans have lived on the island since the 7th millennium B.C ., not to mention the fact that Crete is the birthplace of Zeus . It's little surprise then, with all this beauty and history, that Crete continues to harbor a rich creative community, mostly centered in the neighborhood of Chania. There, visitors can peruse works in museums like the Mediterranean Architecture Center , or seek out unique pieces in galleries like the Municipal Art Gallery or the Redd Gallery . Places like Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York City seem to fit the description on paper, but I'd argue that no city better encapsulates that definition than Doha, the capital of Qatar. There is so much to discover — from East-West/West-East , a series of four steel monoliths created by sculptor Richard Serra to the Museum of Islamic Art , the massive 560,000-square-foot gallery. Eat at Syrian comfort food spot Damasca One, Em Sherif a rooftop spot that serves up authentic regional dishes, and the lively corner restaurant Nourlaya Contemporary for Sri Lankan cuisine. Gleneagles Townhouse , a first-ever city outpost from the famed Gleneagles estate, is opening in the spring. St James Quarter, a developing area of the city, and where Hotel W is being built, is opening next year with 85 shops, 30 restaurants, and a cinema. 16. Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes have bolstered their wellness and culinary offerings in recent years, carving out a name for themselves in the luxury travel realm. Inns of Aurora , comprising five historic mansions, debuted a holistic wellness facility in 2021 — set on 350 acres overlooking Cayuga Lake, complete with hydrotherapy pools, meditation areas, and a farm fresh cafe. Forty miles west of Cayuga, The Lakehouse on Canandaigua — situated on, yes, Canandaigua Lake — recently unveiled the Willowbrook Spa, which boasts lakeside barrel sauna sessions among other innovative treatments. Sandwiched between Cayuga and Canandaigua lakes is Seneca Lake, home to the largest of the Finger Lakes wine trails (this might be riesling country, but don't knock the lighter-bodied reds till you try 'em) and foodie draws like the 14-seat F.L.X. Table . Despite its count of more than 80,000 year-round residents, the very walkable Franklin firmly grasps onto its small-town charms , starting with a quintessentially quaint downtown chock-full of shops and restaurants finding shelter in brick storefronts lining the sidewalks. The uninitiated might know this place for its past — Civil War museums, battleground sites, and historical markers telling the stories of a slave market, race riots, and Black soldiers in the U.S. Colored Troop division of the army all offer points of education and reflection. But the southern city has many modern-day draws as well — for starters, an exciting food and drink scene that includes the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and Arrington Vineyards , the largest winery in the region. Musical events and venues abound, too: The Pilgrimage Music Festival is one of the biggest in the state, and the 7,500-seat FirstBank Amphitheater , newly opened inside a former rock quarry, has welcomed the likes of the Jonas Brothers and Santana to its stage. There's also Leiper's Fork , a quirky-cool enclave filled with antique shops and art galleries. Even more brand-new to the scene is Southall , a 325-acre farm and inn with 62 rooms and suites and 16 cottages opening this June. The lush setting amid rolling hills makes active adventures (hiking, biking, kayaking), wellness pursuits (a spa, meditation, yoga, and two outdoor pools), and nourishing food (the restaurant uses ingredients grown, raised, and foraged on the property) easy to find. The world's largest marine biosphere reserve will expand more than 20,000 square miles next year thanks to a recent presidential decree . The conservation measure seeks to combat illegal fishing by offering increased protection to the thousands of species that populate the archipelago's waters as well as a migration corridor stretching up to Costa Rica used by sharks, whales and other sea life. Come January, travelers can cruise this UNESCO-protected region on new nine-day adventures from Hurtigruten Expeditions and outfitter Metropolitan Touring aboard the 90-guest carbon-neutral MS Santa Cruz II. For a more intimate experience, passengers can book Aqua Expeditions ' seven-suite 164-foot superyacht, Aqua Mare, when it debuts in May. At the end of the year, eco-enthusiasts can sail to lesser-explored islands to spot giant tortoises, sea lions, flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins, and marine iguanas on Quasar Expeditions ' new sustainable yacht — the 18-passenger M/Y Conservation featuring biodegradable amenities, renewable energy and a carbon-neutral footprint. In Palm Springs proper, Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza will celebrate Indigenous art and history alongside the new Spa at Séc-he , where visitors will soak in approximately 12,000-year-old hot springs. Nearby, Fleur Noire Hotel just opened its adults-only casitas and bungalows, with a speakeasy Champagne bar to follow. Unexpectedly, the desert has a budding surf scene — the former Wet 'n Wild waterpark is becoming Palm Springs Surf Club , with a state-of-the-art wave pool, spa, restaurant, and bar; DSRT Surf is set to open a 5.5-acre wave lagoon in Palm Desert; and Kelly Slater himself is bringing a green energy–powered wave basin to Coral Mountain , a proposed new wellness resort with a hotel and residences, set to open in La Quinta by 2023 pending city approvals. Once in the shadow of Charleston and Asheville, Greenville has emerged in recent years as a go-to destination in its own right — and it keeps giving travelers more reasons to visit. In 2022, the city of just over 70,000 people will welcome a luxury boutique hotel, unveil a new public gathering place, and build on its well-earned reputation as a culinary and craft beer hotspot. The long-awaited, 187-room Grand Bohemian hotel is expected to open its doors this spring, complete with a two-story restaurant and bar, art gallery, and spa. The 60-acre Unity Park will feature plenty of greenspace, an observation tower, baseball fields, playgrounds, and walking and biking trails. While South Africa and Uganda grab headlines for African wildlife, Mozambique has been quietly making strides protecting 17 percent of its land — including beaches, coral reefs, and islands — showcasing its dedication to its natural beauty both on land and underwater. Ever since the country's 16-year civil war ended in 1992, the southeastern African nation has been aiming to build back in the right ways. Case in point: the private island of Ilha Caldeira, less than seven miles off the coast as part of the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, located within the marine-protected area with 20 percent of the country's intact living coral. It's here that the eco-luxury Banyan Tree resort chain has developed one of its most ambitious projects yet, a five-star property — accessible by jetty or helicopter — with 40 private pool villas that will be completely solar powered. The festivities commence in January, with thousands of concerts, festivals, exhibitions, and events throughout the year to celebrate Kaunas' history while cementing its path forward . Also this year, Kaunas will welcome the highly anticipated $30 million Science Island, Lithuania's first national science and innovation center designed by UK firm Malcolm Reading Consultants (MRC). By May, the city's former Magnus Hotel will reopen with sparkly new digs and a posh rooftop under the ibis Styles umbrella 404 . This lively city is also a main stop on the recently unveiled 1,330-mile Forest Trail across the Baltics. Never bet against the house: The pandemic may have put a damper on Las Vegas, but the ever-on-the-move city is back in a big way for 2022. A massive new development on the Strip, Resorts World Las Vegas, opened in June, has three distinct Hilton properties under one enormous roof, not to mention more than 40 restaurants and bars, plus pools (plural), and a handful of $15,000-a-night villas . Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, the Cromwell , and downtown's Circa Resort & Casino are also giving visitors fresh options on where to stay. The city's pro sports teams — also now plural — are drawing in fans. And off-Strip "immersive experiences," like the Omega Mart by Meow Wolf and the Illuminarium, both at Area15 , are lending an additional layer of things to do beyond the expected. Not that there's anything wrong with splashing out on dinner and a show after the past two years. Live acts — like Adele's just-announced residency at The Colosseum — are once again hot tickets, as is a table at chic new supper club Delilah , at the Wynn Las Vegas. 28. Louisville, Kentucky

Your cowboy boots were made for walking the streets of Louisville. Nicknamed "The Bourbon City," an official gateway to Kentucky's bourbon trail, the city is expanding its bourbon footprint in 2022. In October, the Urban Bourbon Trail welcomed the first and only African American–owned distillery in the state, Brough Brothers . Meanwhile, its trailmate, Angel's Envy , will wrap its $8.2-million expansion project complete with a new event space and five tasting rooms in the spring. The city is most well known for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby every spring at the historic Churchill Downs racetrack, and the Downs will open the first installment of its multi-year expansion plan, the Homestretch Club , just in time for the 2022 Derby. There, attendees will be able to enjoy the race with an all-new trackside lounge experience. — Hannah Streck

Now that the island of Langkawi is open via a travel bubble, with the rest of the country expected to follow suit in 2022, travelers can once again experience Malaysia's many gifts. Langkawi, a beach lover's paradise, blends unspoiled nature (UNESCO-listed Kilim Karst Geoforest Park ) and unparalleled luxury ( Four Seasons Resort , Datai Langkawi ), while cosmopolitan capital Kuala Lumpur draws visitors with its gleaming Petronas Towers, delicious hawker food stalls, and shopping. A typical Egyptian river cruise sets sail from Cairo to Luxor and then Aswan, with the occasional stop to visit an island temple along the way — complete with sights like the Pyramids, Valley of Kings and Queens, Nefertari's tomb, and the Temple of Kom Ombo. In 2022, there's more than one new river cruise to choose from, between Uniworld's newly launched S.S. Conquering Portugal's highest peak, the cloud-shrouded, 7,713-foot-high Mount Pico, used to be the island's main draw, but a recent uptick in hospitality infrastructure has allowed for more opportunity to partake of Pico's most important agricultural output: wine. Renowned Portuguese winemaker Antonio Maçanita just opened a new winery that comes with bookable design-forward apartments adjacent to the island's unique vineyards. On Pico, grapes are planted on volcanic terroir that are then protected from Atlantic winds with rock walls. Maçanita's ​​ Azores Wine Company 's mineral, sometimes slightly salty wines could be the perfect celebratory drink after a grueling hike.The crashing waves around Pico are beginning to seduce surfers, too. And there are also ample opportunities to watch for marine life thanks to 20 species of dolphins and whales (including humpbacks and orcas) that can be spotted in these waters. But if you'd rather eat what's in the water: Try lapas, a local shellfish delicacy best served grilled with butter and garlic and finished with a squeeze of lemon. Thankfully, getting to experience all of this has never been easier: Starting July 1, United Airlines will for the first time connect Newark to the island of São Miguel (the Azores' largest island), and from there, it's a quick hop over to Pico. In December 2021, the first Club Med mountain resort in Canada, Club Med Quebec Charlevoix , opened, offering all-inclusive ski vacations just a short flight from several major U.S. cities. 38. Santa Ynez Valley, California

Two hours from L.A., the Santa Ynez Valley is rural, unassuming, and coming into its own. The region has grown grapes for decades and has even made a Hollywood cameo in the movie Sideways. The arrival of newer tasting rooms, restaurants, and hotels in recent years has firmly put the area on oenophiles' and travelers' radars. Start with a private olive oil tasting at Global Gardens and hard cider at Tin City Cider in Los Olivos. Follow with pizza pies at Full of Life Flatbread and vino at nearby female-owned A Tribute to Grace and Casa Dumetz . Detour to Firestone Walker 's outpost in Buellton for a few limited edition craft brews and finish with dishes such as roasted tomato and fennel risotto at the Ballard Inn's Gathering Table 404 . Though it's technically just beyond the boundaries of the valley in Lompoc, The Hilt Estate , is too good to miss. And once it opens this year as an Auberge property, The Inn at Mattei's Tavern will make for the perfect base from which to explore it all. — Tanvi Chheda

39. São Paulo, Brazil

Known for its dynamic combination of luxury, design, and fashion influence, São Paulo is an international metropolitan hub of arts and culture. It's the largest city in South America, hosting an array of entertainment opportunities such as fabulous hotels, decadent restaurants, high-class museums, and iconic mid-century architecture. With airlines including American adding flights throughout Brazil in 2022 and a flourishing hospitality renaissance throughout the city, São Paulo is well prepared for its anticipated influx of new travelers. A must-visit destination for 2022 is the Rosewood São Paulo , located in the heart of São Paulo's Cidade Matarazzo and housed in a historic landmark building. 40. Savannah, Georgia

This coastal Georgia city is rightly famous for its atmospheric, moss-draped streets and squares, not to mention its hundreds of years of history. But lately Savannah has been boosted by creativity and innovation outside the sometimes frozen-in-amber Old Town, which means now is a particularly compelling time to visit. Make home base the brand-new Thompson Savannah 429 , a slick 13-story tower with interiors by Studio 11 Design that anchors the still-developing Eastern Wharf neighborhood. Phase one of the 54-acre development, which aims to turn a once-industrial waterfront into a contemporary mixed-use destination, includes hundreds of apartments, fitness trails, access to the Savannah River, and multiple bars and restaurants, including Fleeting , a seasonally driven spot inside the Thompson. At the same time, Savannah's other major waterfront destination has also come into its own. The Plant Riverside District, a stone's throw from Old Town, marked its official grand opening in November 2021, putting a bow on a bustling JW Marriott hotel , countless restaurants and bars, and multiple live performance venues all along a rebuilt waterfront. Not that all the action is along the river: The ever-evolving Starland District, a short drive from Johnson Square, has its share of hangouts including Starland Yard , a food truck park that's also home to the excellent Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana ; Two Tides Brewing Company , which pours hazy ales and delicious sours in a super-cool taproom; and Troupial , a Venezuelan cafe. You'll also want to pack Wildsam Savannah , a newly released field guide that helps visitors understand the layers of history (and the contemporary politics) that are fueling the latest renaissance in Savannah. — Paul Brady

41. Seattle, Washington

Few places offer both an urban and a natural escape in one destination — and the Emerald City might be one of the best. 43. Singapore

Singapore reopened to vaccinated American travelers in October 2021 with the introduction of the country's Vaccinated Travel Lane . Travelers can fly from the U.S. on Singapore Airlines' vaccine-mandatory flights ; the World's Best airline 26 years running launched Vaccinated Travel Lane flights this fall, and United Airlines plans to follow suit by January 2022. Even in the early stages of reopening to foreign travelers, the city-state is already unveiling new culinary ventures. Recently, chef Julien Royer, behind three-Michelin-star Odette, opened Claudine , and Raffles Singapore unveiled Osteria BBR 404 by Alain Ducasse, while Marina Bay Sands plans to debut chef Tetsuya Wakuda's second restaurant within the hotel in the new year. Of course, there's just as much flavor to be found at Singapore's famed hawker centers, now on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. As tourists return to Singapore, new cultural attractions follow — from the return of Singapore Art Week, beginning Jan. 14, to the recent unveiling of SkyHelix Sentosa , an open-air ride towering 300 feet above sea level, for anyone still in need of thrills after a 17-hour flight over the Pacific. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

44. Southwest Michigan

Beaches with ocean-like views were once the main draw to Michigan's southwest coast, but new high-style accommodations and hyper-local experiences are giving us more reasons to go. Where to stay with so many options? Consider the cool new motel-turned-boutique Lake Shore Resort in Saugatuck; The Fields glamping retreat with new spa tents in South Haven; the revamped, modern Harbor Grand Hotel in New Buffalo; or anywhere along the coast with high-touch Bluefish Vacation Rentals , which has killer lakefront homes now stocked with handmade local goods. 45. St. Moritz, Switzerland

If you're on the hunt for glitz, glamour, and powder for days, look no further than St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Alpine ski town has long been considered the birthplace of winter vacationing. Tourists first flocked to the mountain town in 1864 , when hotelier Johannes Badrutt took a few British travelers to the community, promising them bluebird days all winter. It wasn't long until others learned about this hidden winter oasis. Skiers and winter sports enthusiasts flocked to the mountain, which has now hosted the Winter Olympic Games not once, but twice. It's an ideal place for ski bunnies too, thanks to its luxury shopping, and its numerous Michelin-starred restaurants . This winter, head to St. Moritz for its fantastic events like White Surf (Feb. 6, 13, and 20, 2022), an international horse race that takes place across the frozen Lake St. Moritz, and the Snow Polo World Cup 404 (Jan. 28-30, 2022), which happens to be the world's only high-goal tournament on snow. Book a stay at the Badrutt's Palace Hotel , which officially reopened on Dec. 3 for the 2021/2022 season and offers guests the chance to try their hand at high-octane winter sports like skijöring, snowkiting, tobogganing, and even private helicopter tours to the peaks of Piz Bernina and Piz Palü. — Stacey Leasca

The beaches of St. Petersburg and nearby Clearwater are consistently ranked among the best in the U.S. and even the world , but there's more to this destination than white sand, pristine waters, and 361 days of sunshine per year. St. Pete/Clearwater offers more than 30 museums and galleries featuring world-renowned artists like Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso, as well as the largest collection of Salvador Dalí's work outside of Spain. One could say brewing the perfect beer is also an artform that St. Pete/Clearwater has mastered, with its trail of 35+ locally owned craft breweries. 47. Todos Santos, Mexico

Todos Santos is one of Mexico's pueblo mágicos, or "magic towns," and locals are working to retain its history and culture while embracing the steady stream of travelers who have begun venturing an hour north of Cabo San Lucas to discover its charm. The area saw a handful of new boutique resorts pop up in 2021 that provide luxury amenities while keeping the rugged land and local flora the centerpiece. Wellness-focused Paradero describes itself as a "landscaping project" that just so happens to have luxurious suites, and El Perdido , an all-villa resort less than five miles south, provides all-terrain vehicles so visitors can get to Los Cerritos beach, the local surf break of choice. Oceanfront Rancho Pescadero 's multimillion-dollar transformation will be complete in the spring. Bookings for its oceanfront villas and penthouse rooms — some with private rooftops and plunge pools — open in January. Todos Santos has fully embraced farm-to-table dining, with Javier Plascencia's orchard-adjacent Jazamango leading the way, and Santa Terra , a cosmopolitan oyster bar meets arts and entertainment venue concept, is in the process of adding multiple bars and restaurants, plus a glamping site and amphitheater, according to its developer, "without chopping down a single tree." — Nina Ruggiero

48. Udaipur, India

After an extremely challenging 20-month closure, India reopened to vaccinated travelers on Nov. 15, 2021. Those looking toward South Asia in the new year, perhaps to see the Taj Mahal in Agra or hit the Goan beaches, should make sure Udaipur is on the itinerary. The city of lakes in southern Rajasthan is thought of as the most romantic Indian destination (even called the "Venice of the East") — but it's not just for honeymooners. From the vibrance of Hathi Pol bazaar and Shilpgram , an artisanal compound on the outskirts of the city with a festival set to return on Jan. 22, to the serenity of Lake Pichola, the artificial lake made in the 14th century, Udaipur is a city where you can fully immerse in Rajasthani culture. A hub of Indian luxury, Udaipur is now home to the country's first Raffles hotel, which opened in October. This private island hotel on Udai Sagar Lake is accessible only by boat — something of a trademark for the over-the-top hotels of Udaipur. Meant to be a flagship hotel in the Raffles portfolio, complete with brand staples (think: bars, both Long and Writers), 101 lavish suites, Rasoi cooking school, and lakeside open-air restaurant Belvedere Point. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

49. Wales, United Kingdom

The only path in the world to follow the whole of a country's coastline, the Wales Coastal Path celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022. Walking its 870 miles would take three months, but its most spectacular stretches can be seen in one visit — and in style. St David's in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, is Britain's smallest city with a mere population of 1,600 and is home to a Medieval cathedral , a luxury hotel inside Roch Castle , some excellent pubs, and the upscale St David's Gin & Kitchen . Hiking paths with unbeatable coastal vistas are within easy reach (try the St David's Head loop ) and pass neolithic tombs and hillforts. — Jamie Carter

50. Yucatán, Mexico

Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán, has emerged as one of Mexico's most popular cities thanks to its lively restaurant scene, a busy calendar of cultural events, and a relaxed tropical atmosphere. Increasingly, however, travelers are venturing beyond the city to explore the state's unspoiled nature reserves, ancient Maya sites, and sprawling haciendas — a number now converted into hotels. Among the destinations that are drawing travelers to Yucatán are El Cuyo, a quiet beach town that was long a closely guarded secret of windsurfers. Now visitors can also enjoy gourmet Mexican fare at the El Chile Gordo restaurant and boho-chic lodgings at the new Casa Mate . In Espita, a charming colonial town near Valladolid, is the Casona los Cedros hotel which opened in summer 2021. Sisal, a historic port in the western part of the state, has attracted new interest since being named a Pueblo Mágico at the end of 2020. A new highway completed in April now connects Sisal to Hunucmá (and then beyond to Mérida) making it easier for beachcombers to visit, and perhaps spend the night at the cool Club de Patos 404 . — John Newton

51. Bonus: Space

This was a monumental year for human spaceflight — not only did NASA and SpaceX achieve a regular cadence of astronaut launches for the first time since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, but space tourism has also lifted off in a major way, making space a top destination to visit in 2022. And it's a realistic trip, too, so long as you have the budget for it. Both Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic succeeded in taking passengers to space on short suborbital hops this year, and each company plans to ramp up those flights in 2022 — Virgin Galactic already has more than 600 bookings. The price for a quick jaunt to space? A few hundred thousand dollars . If you have an even bigger budget (say, a couple hundred million dollars), you could charter your own orbital flight in a SpaceX Dragon Capsule, as did entrepreneur Jared Issacman with his Inspiration4 mission in September. There are also tourism trips to the International Space Station in the works; Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa launches on his multi-day journey in December, courtesy of space travel agency Space Adventures and Russia's Roscosmos space agency, which plans to take even more " citizen space explorers " to the orbiting laboratory in the near future. Of course, not everyone has pockets deep enough to cover space travel, but more affordable journeys are on the horizon. Startup Space Perspective plans to launch high-altitude balloon rides to the edge of space in 2024 , for the relatively low price of $125,000. Potential dealbreaker, though — the balloons don't actually reach space, maxing out at 100,000 feet in altitude, while space is considered to begin somewhere between 264,000 feet (50 miles) and 327,360 feet ​​(62 miles). But hey, at least there's a bar on board. — Stefanie Waldek

W ith miles of golden sand beaches stretching along its western flank; gorgeous temples, mosques and churches dotted around the villages and hillsides; internationally revered Michelin restaurants; a culturally rich and recently regenerated old town ; a well connected international airport; plus an armada of long tail boats anchored on the shores ready to drive you out on trips around the inlets, it’s easy to see why Phuket has maintained its spot as Thailand ’s most popular island for decades.

Thailand buzz is currently oscillating across the world, partly thanks to the imminent arrival of the next installation of the hit HBO show The White Lotus – the third season wrapped filming in the country earlier this year. Due to be released in 2025, the show could easily bring higher tourist numbers than ever to the country.

But in Phuket , where gridlock traffic jams on the roads and lack of space on the beaches are already frequent complaints, it makes you wonder: does this island need an influx? Is it time to swap Phuket for another Thai destination on your next trip?

The heir apparent, and seamless alternative, to Phuket is Koh Samui , the verdant palm-lined favourite in the Gulf of Thailand. There are strong parallels between the two islands. Firstly, Samui also has an airport – some would say the cutest airport in the world, consisting of quaint wooden gazebo departure gates surrounded by thriving flower beds – so notions of bumpy ferries and catamarans to reach the island can be cast aside.

More importantly, and very on-brand for Thailand at the moment: both islands have swathes of affordable luxury to indulge in but, unlike Phuket, on Koh Samui it’s easy to find a place that’s tucked away from the heaving crowds. It’s easy to relax into Samui, from family-friendly resorts such as Anantara Bophut , which has one of the largest and most zen spas on the island, and the Centara Reserve that sprawls along the shores of Chaweng Beach, to the bijou Avani+ Samui where floating breakfasts in your private pool are the norm, at their secluded resort in the remote southwest corner, Taling Ngam.

For the health conscious, Samui is also a wellness hotspot with some of the best retreats in the country. Kapuhala is an idyllic and eminently affordable detox-focused stay where tented villas nuzzle the forested hills of Chaweng Noi, and health food, yoga programmes and serenity are on the menu. Or further south on the island, the high-end Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary has been making serious waves in the world of burnout retreats.

Samui is a bustling and vibrant island in places, though, particularly around the Fisherman’s Village night market, where excellent but inexpensive street food is aplenty, so don’t arrive expecting an undiscovered gem by any means. However, unlike Phuket, it is still possible to drive to quiet beaches and have pockets of the island to yourself. The sands of Coral Cove hemmed in by boulders, the quieter Bang Po Beach or the “secret” Ban Tai Beach are all worth exploring, to catch a few hours of sought-after beach bliss.

But if you’re feeling a smidge intrepid and yearning for beaches so unspoilt and wild that you won’t find a soul on them, head to the mighty Koh Chang – another strong substitute for Phuket. Also in the Gulf of Thailand, east of Bangkok and not far from the Cambodian border, the island is less developed in the way of a luxury scene but has some great boutique stays, plus a lot to offer in the way of adventure .

Getting there is a multi-transport game: hop on a bus or a very short flight from Bangkok to Trat, where you pick up a steampunk-style ferry that slowly chugs over to Thailand’s third-biggest island.

Koh Chang is an exceptional spot for trekking. Hikers are rewarded with one of the seven accessible, cascading waterfalls that are spread across the interior. The north side of the island is still pretty au naturel and generally untouched, particularly Long Beach, which is a must-visit. The south coast is lined with small hamlets and fishing villages where the accommodation, bars and restaurants are found. Staying on the south side of Koh Chang and exploring the north by bike is the way to go – unless you plan to spend your days horizontal on a sun lounger.

If that’s the case, being based in Lonely Beach or the neighbouring Bang Bao fishermen’s village is smart, where boutique accommodation like Oasis Koh Chang and Bhuvarin Resort have infinity pools with sea views to die for, while the boho-chic Indie Beach Bungalows have bedrooms right on the soft white sands (and even host gigs and the occasional music festival). Bang Bao Pier is the place to find the free-diving and snorkelling tours that loop around Koh Chang’s reefs and shipwrecks or head over to nearby Koh Rang National Park. For the landlubbers, Rasta Cafe is where you can kick back and enjoy the sunsets.

Of course, there are more than 30 Thai islands to stay on (out of the more than 1,400 in the country), but if you’re looking for the Phuket factor without the hordes of tourists, Koh Samui or Koh Chang will keep your sun-drenched dreams fulfilled.

Referred to as the “Gateway to the Appalachians," Chatsworth is home to less than 5,000 residents and was established in 1905 as a Louisville and Nashville Railroad depot. Its location in the Fort and Cohutta Mountains makes it a remarkable destination to experience the fall season, promising a spectacular blaze of autumn colors.

One of the must-visit state parks in Georgia , the 3,712-acre Fort Mountain State Park in the Chattahoochee National Forest , is also blessed with scenic overlooks, verdant hardwood and pine forests, cascading waterfalls, and blueberry thickets—all of which are especially gorgeous in the fall. 6 Blairsville

Located near the Nottely River within the Chattahoochee National Forest, Blairsville is considered the most scenic town in Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains . It's an Appalachian Trail community that encompasses more than 80 miles, including Vogel State Park and the section that passes through a man-made structure.

Surrounded by glimmering lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, Blairsville is popular with outdoor aficionados, and wherever you look, there are well-kept hiking trails that offer postcard-perfect scenery. Blairsville is also home to Lake Nottely and Lake Winfield Scott, which make the town a paradise for travelers who love watersports.

The Union County Farmers Market is a great spot to pick up some fresh produce, locally made arts and crafts, homemade products, and many more. It operates from June to October and the first Saturday of December.
