Although the area is famous for snow, springtime is especially beautiful in Niigata City. The most popular places to see cherry blossoms in the city are at Hakusan Park and Hakusan Shrine.

Winters are marked by deep snow. One of the best ways to enjoy winter is bathing in local hot springs. There are many onsen resorts within easy reach of Niigata City including Iwamuro Onsen, Tsukioka, Sakihana, Senami, Deyu, Murasugi, Shirane, Otachi, and Yahiko.

Art, history and the art of hospitality

For history lovers, make sure you visit Minatopia, the Niigata City History Museum in the old district. This museum is housed in the former Niigata Customs House, former Daishi Bank, and a main building which is based on the original design of the former Niigata City Hall.

In early August, Niigata holds a festival with a fireworks display over the Shinano River and a folk dancing parade with around 15,000 participants.

About 40 minutes south of the center of Niigata City, the Shirone district is known for its annual giant kite-flying festival in June.

Things to Do in Niigata City

Food and culture in the heart of Japan

Niaya Harper

As Niigata Prefecture's capital city, Niigata City is located along the Sea of Japan coast and often the first stop for visitors venturing to this prefecture, well-known for its sake and rice heritage. Thanks to its abundant nature and perfect climate, Niigata became an agricultural powerhouse and historically acquired a reputation for its plentiful, abundant food output – helping it amass one of the largest regional populations in Japan around 150 years ago.

During the Edo Period, Niigata positioned itself as one of Japan's leading port cities, helping facilitate trade between Hokkaido in the north down to the Seto Inland Sea and Kyoto/Osaka areas. These trade channels ensured a combination of regional ingredients, wares and skills passed through Niigata city, helping the city flourish in terms of food culture.

With this kind of heritage, Niigata City is often seen as the center of Niigata's wider burgeoning food culture but also lays claim to many other cultural attractions too. Here we introduce numerous attractions around the city for visitors looking for things to do (and eat) in Niigata City.

While Niigata has many delicious foods to boast, it is most notable for its rice and its sake. Ponshukan, located in Niigata Station, offers over 90 of the prefecture’s sake brands to taste test from a vending machine. For 500 yen you get a tasting cup and five tokens that will get you five cups of sake to taste. In addition to sake there are also many local food products such as soy sauces, rice crackers, and sweets, many of which you can also taste test. Make sure to stop by either on your way in or out of Niigata City.

Saito Family Summer Villa

Built in 1918 by a wealthy merchant by the name of Kijuro Saito IV as a summer villa for his family, the Old Saito Villa is now a cultural heritage property and revered as one of the most beautiful homes and gardens in Niigata. There are 11 rooms in the house each with their own character and design detail. The gardens were designed with a different aesthetic all around so viewers can enjoy a changing scene when walking from room to room in the house and throughout each season. The home and garden was designed with the concept of unity in mind so that there are no boundaries between inside and outside, creating a harmony.

Northern Culture Museum

Photo: Niigata City

What was once the home of the wealthy Ito Family, prosperous landowners and merchants, is now a museum that houses eight generations of the family’s collection of artworks and documents with a portion of the 6,000 items on display. The highlight really is the house and gardens, completed in 1889. The traditional Japanese-style wooden home is built on a 29,100 square meter site with 65 rooms and perfectly landscaped gardens, which are beautiful to view in all four seasons. Visitors can enjoy lunch at one of the two restaurants, and there is even an inn located on the grounds for those who want a deeper experience of the culture and history of life on the Ito Estate.

Located nearby the landmark Bandai Bridge, Pia Bandai or ‘Pia’ as pronounced in Japanese is a gourmet lover’s dream. You can find the freshest seafood, local produce, and a dedicated area for Niigata’s most prized product, rice. There are also several cafes and restaurants to have ramen and sushi to name a few, all while immersed in the authentic fisherman’s market environment. Make sure to head out in the morning to catch the lively market in action and don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs while there.

1. See the breathtaking Kiyotsu Gorge

Kiyotsu Gorge is known as one of Japan's Three Great Canyons , along with Kurobe Gorge in Toyama and Osugi Valley in Mie Prefecture . In 1941, it was also selected as the most beautiful scenic spot in Niigata . The huge V-shaped canyon expresses the beauty of the four seasons , with fresh greenery in the spring and red-dyed trees in autumn . It is recommended to take a walk through the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel. There are three observatories located along the 750-meter long tunnel, as well as spots where you can learn about the nature of Kiyotsu Gorge through images. Paddies and terraced rice fields (called tanada) are carved into the mountains and valleys like staircases. The Hoshitoge Rice Terraces, located in Tokamachi, is is said to have one of the best views in the city. Tourists from both inside and outside the country visit to see the nearly 200 rice paddies that make up these amazing views. The best time to come see them is from around the end of March to June (after the snow melts), and from October to November. These times are when the rice fields are filled with water, reflecting a mysteriously beautiful views of the rising and setting sun, and even the early morning sea of clouds, depending on the day’s weather. 6. Unique to Niigata, the place for rice! Tour the many sake breweries

6. Unique to Niigata, the place for rice! Tour the many sake breweries

Niigata Prefecture is blessed with good quality rice and water, making it a thriving place for sake brewing. Since ancient times, there have been many sake breweries, and the number of the current ones in the prefecture is the highest in Japan. The prefecture has a history of 470 years with breweries like Yoshinogawa Sake Brewery in Nagaoka City, and Imayotsukasa Sake Brewery in Niigata City, which can be toured with guides in English as well. From November to March, which is the time of preparation, every sake brewery is busy. Even if it’s not required to make a reservation, we recommend you do, by phone or email.

7. Get fresh Niigata seafood along Teradomari Fish Market Street

(Image photo)

For the best local Niigata seafood , we recommend checking out Teradomari Fish Market Street. Their lineup of fresh fish draws in crowds of shoppers every day. The cafeteria has many shops that offer seafood bowls and set meals, all made with fresh seafood . Shops tend to get particularly crowded on weekends, so be sure to consider that when planning a time to visit. For take-out, our recommendation is “Hama-yaki,” a skewer dish of squid, scallops, and fish. They are cooked right on the spot, so enjoy the warmth as you wait.

8. Enjoy Niigata's specialty: red snow crab

Photo courtesy of Niigata Prefecture Tourism Association

Red snow crab is one of the specialty products of Niigata . The crimson snow crab, a dish with miso is a must-try item if you visit Niigata . You can taste it at sushi restaurants in the prefecture and restaurants in the markets, but we especially recommend Roadside Station Marine Dream Nou, in Itoigawa City. At Kanaya Yokocho there are a lot of stands where you can buy snow crab from local fishermen, and you can taste it right there at the roadside station. From January to February the fishing season for red snow crab is closed, so keep that in mind when visiting.

9. Taste the local cuisine! Hegi soba noodles

Niigata 's specialty Hegi soba is a kind of noodle that has been made popular by Uonuma City a long time ago. The noodles are rolled up in a square bowl called hegi and funori is used to connect the noodles. In Japan, it’s popular to use wheat flour to connect buckwheat noodles, but since Uonuma City is big on textile production, they started using gloiopeltis. The noodles are firm and flavorful. Hegi soba can be tasted in various parts of the prefecture. There are many popular shops in Uonuma City and Tokamachi City, so make sure to stop by.

10. Enjoy the snow festival and winter sports

(Image photo)

In Niigata Prefecture , one of the areas in Japan with the heaviest snowfalls, there are plenty of snow festivals and winter activities. Visit in winter and enjoy the unique experience of Niigata with its spectacular snowy scenery. A recommended event is the Tokamachi Snow Festival, held in Tokamachi City from the third Friday to Sunday of February every year. During that period, snow sculptures handmade by citizens will be exhibited throughout the city. And don't miss the show performed on a huge snow stage. The ski resort is full of popular spots visited by international and local skiers. Choose accordingly to your preferences. Maybe you’ll like the Maiko Snow resort, which has a long run with a maximum gliding distance of 6,000 meters, or maybe you'll prefer the Kagura Ski Resort, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Joetsu Border, or perhaps you’ll like the popular Naeba Ski Resort. It is situated at the mouth of Japan’s longest river, the Shinano River, where it meets the Sea of Japan in the vast Echigo Plain. It first flourished as a port town, and later became one of the first five ports to open to international trade. Nowadays, the city is home to a substantial number of colleges and trade schools, resulting in a high population of young people and vibrant contemporary culture. Unlike many other major Japanese cities, Niigata isn’t part of the Kanto or Kansai sprawls. The advantages this offers to travelers are that, in addition to the attractions and convenience typical of Japanese cities, Niigata also offers natural beauty, cuisine rich in locally-grown ingredients, and high-class traditional Japanese nightlife that welcomes international visitors.

Highlights of Niigata City

Geisha & ryotei.

Much of Niigata City’s legacy is as a propserous port town along the Kitamaebune route, a trade route active during the Edo and Meiji periods. Courting plenty of sailors with coin to spare, nightlife in the city prospered, including ryotei and geisha (called geigi in Niigata) entertainment. Ryotei are exclusive high-class restaurants historically apreciated not only for their fine cuisine and opulent decor, but also for their exclusivity — establishments where high-level business or political rendezvous could take place discreetly. Geigi and ryotei culture lives on in Niigata even now, just on a smaller scale than during its heyday. Locals of certain social status still frequent such establishments, and here in Niigata, international visitors are welcome to indulge as well—most ryotei in the city welcome first-time visitors, and are happy to provide private geigi entertainment.

<img style=

Modern city culture

Major Japanese cities are hubs of youth culture, and Niigata is no exception. In fact, thanks to the unusually high number of colleges and vocational schools here, Niigata youth culture is particularly strong. The mainstream hub is the Bandai commercial district; attractions here include department stores and an idol girl group theater. Nearby, the quaint old Furumachi shopping streets are seeing a grassroots revival thanks to the city’s youth—as elderly shopowners retire, young folks have been moving in and putting down their own roots setting up hip eateries, vintage clothing shops, and even a guesthouse inside a renovated 90-year-old dango workshop.

Niigata City is bounded by the ocean to the north and west, and by the basin of the Shinano and Agano Rivers to the south and east. That makes it easy to get out and enjoy nature without even having venture beyond city limits. The seaside boasts swimming beaches and romantic sunsets. Inland, the river basin offers landscapes that transform with the seasons, and protected natural heritage like the Fukushimagata Lagoon, a 193-hectare nature reserve home to seasonal flowers, giant lilypads, migratory birds, and other wildlife.

Locally sourced ingredients

The ocean and river basin aren’t just nice to look at; they also provide culinary bounty that feeds Niigata City. Fish caught in the Sea of Japan off the coast here means that sushi and other seafood delights, like nodoguro aburidon—rice bowls topped with flame-broiled rosy seabass—are available in abundance at affordable prices. Inland, fruit orchards dot the outskirts of the city and rice paddies stretch into the distance. The rice paddies set the stage for farmhouse cafes popular as Sunday lunch destinations for city dwellers, where diners can enjoy locally harvested fare while gazing out at this quintessentially Japanese agricultural landscape.

The rice grown in Niigata is for more than just eating—Niigata is the prefecture home to the greatest number of sake breweries in all of Japan. One sake brewery offering tours and tastings is located in the heart of the city just a short walk from Niigata Station. For an even more convenient sake tasting experience, look no further than Niigata Station itself. Ponshukan, a tasting automat of sorts boasting some one-hundred coin-operated sake dispensers, is located inside Niigata Station. Once you’re ready to stop tasting and do some real drinking, izakaya pubs across the city have fine Niigata sake on offer for cheap.

niigata city tourism

Beer & wine

Beyond sake, the city also produces beer and wine. The city is home to a number of craft beer bars and microbreweries. One of the best is Nuttari Brewery, where they brew distinctively Niigata beers in such small batches that they’re available nowhere else but their on-site brewpub. On the southern outskirts of the city, the coastal plains serve as famously fertile grounds for vineyards—so much so that the area has been nicknamed the Niigata Wine Coast. Not only can visitors tour the wineries and do tastings, but some of the wineries here even offer overnight stays.

With all the conveniences of a major Japanese city, plus charms like geigi entertainment and local cuisine and uniquely accessible here, Niigata is a satisfying city to visit, or perhaps even serve as the base for your next Japan vacation.

Niigata is a famous region for rice production and hence its sake is also quite famous. Imayo Tsukasa is a brewery 10 minutes east of the train station and offers tours of its facility and how sake is made.

Japanese language tours take place roughly on the hour from 9-4pm, while there is an English tour at 2pm every weekday. Japanese tours are free while the English tour costs 400 yen. You can pre-book your spot online but I walked in successfully on a Friday morning.

While I took a Japanese tour, there is an online English audio guide that mirrored it : https://p.tguide.jp/en/CRT/0001

At the end of the tour after about 35 minutes, I returned to the lobby/shop where they had 2 non-alcoholic sakes and 1 alcoholic one for tasting. You can also pay 1000 yen for premium tasting. Note that you have to wear their plastic sandals during the tour while a sign says no tasting until after the tour.
