Any hunter who dreams of wide-open spaces and herds of plentiful big game will find that their hunting dreams lead to Wyoming. The state is a huge, high plateau broken by many wild, remote mountain ranges. Elk, mule deer, grizzlies, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep inhabit the high country of mountain ranges such as the Wind River and Teton ranges in the west, the Big Horns in the northcentral, and the Snowy Range in the south. The sweeping high plains of Wyoming are covered with cattle and cowboys, and the productive rangeland is shared with impressive herds of pronghorn antelope, deer, and elk. Wyoming’s most sought-after game animals are pronghorn, elk, moose, mule deer, and white-tailed deer. The state also offers hunts for bighorn sheep, bison, black bears, mountain lions, wolves, mountain goats, turkeys, and upland birds. Elk are plentiful on public and private lands in both mountains and plains regions. Mule deer are found throughout the state, both on the plains and in the mountains, while whitetails are plentiful in the Black Hills region in northeastern Wyoming and in many farming areas and creek bottoms around the state. But Wyoming is best known for its pronghorn—more commonly called “antelope.” Wyoming has more pronghorn antelope than anywhere else on the North American continent, and success rates for hunters exceed 85 percent. Most Wyoming hunting is managed via a limited quota system, which means there are a set number of licenses for each hunting area, and hunters have to apply for licenses well in advance of the season. That means planning ahead is a must if you want to hunt in Wyoming. To hunt in Wyoming, you also need a conservation stamp and proof of completing a hunter safety course. Wyoming also requires big-game hunters to wear at least one item of fluorescent orange while hunting. Wyoming has more than 30 million acres of public land, making it a hunter’s paradise. Some of these areas are federally designated wilderness areas, and Wyoming law stipulates that nonresident big game hunters are required to use the services of a professional outfitter or resident guide when hunting in wilderness areas. All outfitters must be licensed by the Wyoming Board of Outfitters and Professional Guides. The Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association, www.wyoga.org , is a great source of information on guides and outfitters in Wyoming. Our elk hunting is unsurpassed, with one of the best remote wilderness camps and a hunting lodge to work from, we have a lot of country to hunt. This allows us to rarely have more than six hunters in camp each hunt. A large portion of our territory was burned in the forest fires of 1988, and since the fires nature’s regeneration has produced some excellent habitat for elk and deer. We are seeing big healthy animals with good antler mass. We generally are taking mature heavy five and six point bulls.

Bighorn Sheep

Sheep tags are hard to draw and sheep can be tough to hunt, but our passion for the hunt coupled with years of experience gives you the best chance of going home with one of these majestic trophies. Our base camp is in the heart of some of the best sheep country in Wyoming. We hunt not only from this camp but also spike camps.

When it comes to deer hunting we have some of the best in the Rocky Mountain region. Our deer hunts are conducted from our hunting camps and a lodge in the mountains adjacent to Yellowstone National Park where we hunt elk. In fact, during these hunts there is a good chance of seeing elk, bighorn sheep, and all sorts of other wildlife. Because our mule deer herd is migratory, we combine stand hunting with the classic spot and stalk hunt. If you have patience and are ready to shoot straight, you stand a good chance of going home with a dark-horned high mountain ‘mulie.’

The Pronghorn Antelope is truly Wyoming’s trophy. Our antelope hunts are conducted from the lodge or motel, either in 4X4’s or horses. Yes, we do hunt antelope with horses. It is a great experience and the best way to access country that vehicles can’t get to.

Star Valley Outfitters

Star Valley Outfitters is one of Wyoming’s premiere outfitting destinations, offering elk, mule deer, bear and moose hunting for rifle or archery, all from the same camp. If you’re looking to journey on a hunt of a lifetime, you’ve come to the right place. Being immersed in the backcountry, saddled up on your trusty horse, and getting an opportunity to hunt some of Wyoming’s top trophies. This experience will be one you’ll reminisce about for years to come. We are confident that you will be pleased with our level of experience, quality of animals, service, and hospitality.

Our hunt area out of Star Valley, Wyoming, is abundant with elk, mule deer and moose.  There is a small bighorn sheep herd that call our hunt area home, providing an opportunity for a tag holder to capitalize on their slam.  Our area is also known to hold a fair amount of Shiras Moose, allowing the once-in-a-lifetime tag holder an opportunity to punch their tag.  Our elk herds are vast, producing a high percentage of harvest opportunity on a nice 5 or 6 point average bull.  It’s not unheard of to locate a few better than average bulls each season.  Our mule deer are typically of trophy quality.  Our camp has harvested a number of 185”-200”+ bucks over the past several seasons, as featured on Extreme Outer Limits TV.

As far as tags, nonresidents must apply for each species by a certain deadline. Wyoming is an all draw-based state, which means that there is an allocation of tags given each year. Most of the species, such as antelope, elk, and mule deer, are on a 75/25 system, which means 75% of that tag pool is going to go to residents, and 25% is going to go to nonresidents. For the once in a lifetime species, such as moose and sheep, the allocation is 90/10.

We are happy to help you through the application process because it can be complicated and intimidating.

Our hunting season starts in mid-September and goes towards the end of October. The camp has modern-day amenities, and you can bring whatever you can fit in your pickup truck. But once you reach camp, you’ll be hunting on horseback as the area is roadless.

We operate with special use permits to operate on 200,000 acres of state and BLM land as well as private land. Guided Elk, Deer, Antelope, Sheep Hunts In Wyoming

All of our Wyoming trophy hunts are one on one fully guided with lodging and meals provided. We utilize both horses and ATV’s to access our hunting ground. Lodging for our hunts are spacious wall tents with wood stoves and propane heaters to keep you comfortable on those crisp fall nights and a oversized cot for a great night sleep. With this hunt you also have an opportunity to take a wolf for an additional trophy fee no license needed in the predator zone.

Your Wyoming Mule Deer Outfitter! Hunt trophy mule deer and whitetail bucks in North Western Wyoming! Our guided deer hunts take place over 5 days utilizing both private property and public land.

We hunt both Mule deer and Whitetail on our properties. These hunts are all spot and stalk hunts that will utilize a vehicle to move around the property to find game.

Hunt trophy pronghorn with a Wyoming hunting outfitter! Wood River Big Game Outfitters conducts it’s pronghorn hunts in many different units but mainly on private property.

Antelope hunts are a 3 day hunt that are all spot and stalk hunting. YOU will look over multiple bucks each day till you find the one that you want to harvest. Our hunters will stay at our local motel in Meeteetse and will be picked up each morning by their personal guide with lunch provided.

Picked us up early each morning and drove us up to where we hunted. Unloaded the heated 4 seated rangers and drove us around. Each day they had a lunch for us as well. Wyoming Antelope Hunting

Wyoming antelope hunting with Table Mountain Outfitters provides you with the best possibility of harvesting a trophy animal.  Antelope remains the best first-time western adventure as you will see many animals and have a great opportunity to bring home a trophy. We offer both rifle and archery as well as town or bunkhouse hunts.  Archery dates start as early as Aug. 15th, Rifle dates start as early as Sept. 25th. 

Idaho Bear Hunting

Idaho bear hunting with Table Mountain Outfitters is conducted in the beautiful mountains of South West Idaho.  These Spring hunts offer an excellent opportunity at a color phase bear.

Wyoming Elk Hunting

Table Mountain Outfitters typically experiences 100% opportunity for both rifle and archery Wyoming elk hunts. Can’t make it this year? Idaho Mountain Lion Hunting

Approximately 90% of Toms taken will qualify for Pope & Young.  This hunt uses snowmobiles, quads (sometimes tracked) and 4wd vehicles. A bobcat or wolf can also be added to a mountain lion hunt for an additional charge. Come enjoy one of the most exhilarating hunts you will ever experience.

Wyoming Mule Deer Hunting

Table Mountain Outfitters’ private leases afford you the best opportunity to harvest a trophy animal without the pressure from other deer hunters. The average success rate is 95% – 100% on with more than 100% opportunity. You can expect to harvest trophies ranging from 22”-28” on these Wyoming deer hunts. Both rifle and archery hunts available as well as bunkhouse and town hunts.

3S Outfitters is a unique outdoor experience. We offer guided pack trips and hunts through Wyoming’s Gros Ventre Wilderness from our permitted backcountry camp. Our packages allow you to disconnect from your daily routine and reconnect with your passion for the outdoors. Whether you want to ride horseback and camp in some of the most remote reaches of Wyoming wilderness or pursue Elk, Mule Deer, or Bighorn Sheep, we have the knowledge and amenities to make your trip unforgettable.

3S Outfitters is owned and operated by Trey and Shelby Scharp. Trey and Shelby have been operating/owned remote lodges and camps for over 20 years in Wyoming and Patagonia Argentina and Chile. We continually update our camps and are proud of the equipment and service we provide.

Pack trips are offered June through August. Our hunting season begins the end of August with a Bighorn Sheep hunt. We strive to make your pack trip and hunting experience in the Wyoming high country enjoyable, and comfortable.

We specialize in Elk hunts, but also have some nice Mule Deer in the area, and love to accommodate deer hunters as well.

1. To guarantee a hunting reservation, 3S Outfitters requires a $500 deposit within 15 days of confirmation of availability, and a completed guest information sheet. The deposit can be made by cash, personal check, certified check or money order.

• A. The deposit is refundable if you do not draw a license . License fees are refunded by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.  3S Outfitters will check draw results and notify clients of draw results within 2 weeks of draw by phone and/or email. *Deposits will be refunded in 30 days by personal check mailed back to you for unsuccessful draw results.
• B. 3S Outfitters can also keep your deposit for the following year should you wish to try to draw a license for the following season. *Please notify 3S Outfitters when we contact you of your draw results if you want us to keep your deposit for the following season.  Failure to notify 3S Outfitters of your intentions for following season will not guarantee your hunt for the next year, and will lead to return of your deposit.

2. 3S Outfitters requires payment in full, 6 weeks prior to start of hunt. *Refunds of full payment will only be returned by 3S Outfitters to the Client for the following conditions:

• A. In case of incapacitating illness or injury of the licensee supported by a physician’s sworn statement on letterhead of physician.
• B. In case of death of the licensee, any person who has authority to represent the deceased as provided by a court order shall submit a written request for a deposit/fee refund supported by a copy of the respective death certificate and court appointed order.
• C. In the case of death in the family, the licensee shall submit a written request for a deposit/final payment refund supported by proof of death.

Under no circumstances shall the Wyoming Game and Fish Department approve a refund of any license, permit, stamp or tag if the written request for refund is received after December 31 st of the calendar year in which the license, permit, stamp or tag was issued.  Refunds shall be denied in any circumstance where the licensee hunted on the license for the designated species as specified in Commission Rules and Regulations, including special archery seasons, during the year for the license is issued.

Wyoming Merriams Wild Turkey Hunts

If you would like to book extra days to your big game or turkey hunt, you may do so for $550 per extra day as long as guides are available.

Rifle hunts can be upgraded to 1-on-1 (one guide to one hunter) for an additional $1,500 if guides are available.

Hunt prices do not include licenses, stamps or permits.  These are issued by the state of Wyoming or Montana.

We can accommodate whatever your needs are for a memorable experience. We customize our Big Horn adventures to your individual needs. We provide exciting experiences for people of all ages and hunting abilities. We encourage youth hunting to get our younger generation active in the outdoors.

Lodging is included for the night prior to your hunt.  When staff is available we offer a complimentary shuttle to and from the Buffalo and Sheridan, Wyoming airports. This is generally not an option during the months of October and November.

Elk Hunting In Wyoming’s Remote ‘Little Siberia’ Might Help Trim Herds

For Wyoming hunters, the acquisition of a $2.3 million piece of the Mule Creek Ranch will get them access to an area of Albany County teeming with elk. Two hours from anywhere, it's located in a stretch of mind-boggling vastness that locals call “Little Siberia.”

For Wyoming hunters, the good news is that the acquisition of a $2.3 million piece of the Mule Creek Ranch could get them better access to an area of Albany County teeming with elk.

The not-so-good news is that it’s about two hours from anywhere, in the far-flung northern reaches of the county — a stretch of mind-boggling vastness that locals call “Little Siberia.”

Then again, perhaps that’s good news for hunters who want to get away from crowds and are willing to put some miles on their boots, avid elk hunter J.R. Larsen of Douglas told Cowboy State Daily.

The acquisition should create a few more close-to-the road hunting opportunities for elderly hunters or those with mobility challenges, he said.

But the vast majority of it will be remote country.

“There isn’t a lot of roads out there, so it’s going to be for go-getters,” said Larsen, who is the southern Wyoming regional director for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF).

Public-Private Purchase

RMEF currently owns the property and was instrumental in putting together the land acquisition.

The Mule Creek Ranch sits just west of Laramie Peak and totals 6,600 acres. Game and Fish manages a public access area there, open for elk hunters with permission slips from the agency, Oct. 15 through Jan. 31 each winter.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission during its recent meeting in Riverton approved buying the western parcel, 2,660 acres, for $2.3 million. Game and Fish plans to make it a new Hunter Management Area (HMA), for which hunters will still need permission slips.

The Game and Fish acquisition should be completed in May.

The 4,000-acre eastern parcel will be bought by the 88 Land and Livestock Co.. A closing date hasn’t been set. The 88 Land and Livestock Co. has agreed to establish a public access easement during elk hunting seasons, Nov. 1 through Jan. 3.

On the western parcel, only elk hunting is now allowed. It might also eventually be opened for hunting mule deer, antelope, black bears and mountain lions.

Getting Hunters ‘Spread Out’

The current Game and Fish public access area is already popular with some elk hunters, Larsen said. The new property acquisitions should help tie it in with better access to adjoining Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming State Lands parcels, creating a vast hunter’s paradise.

“What this is going to do is help spread hunters out across more land and provide some more opportunity,” he said.

The Mule Creek Ranch is in Elk Hunt Area 7, which has elk herds that are grossly over population objectives set by Game and Fish.

Some ranchers in southeast Wyoming say they’re getting overrun by elk , so Game and Fish has made it a priority to get hunters more access and better opportunities to kill more elk, especially cow elk.

Game and Fish is also considering offering hunters unlimited Type 8 cow/calf elk tags in some hunt areas, mostly on private land.

Larsen said he’s not certain if those Type 8 tags would be available for the Moose Creek Ranch access areas.

Truly Isolated

Some who hunt in Little Siberia find camping spots on BLM parcels or other public land, Larsen said. It not practical to drive in and out for a same-day hunt. The area is about a two-hour drive one way from Laramie, Douglas or Casper.

Little Siberia is one of Wyoming’s most remote places. Some ranchers there have lobbied to open a  one-room schoolhouse rather than having to shuttle their children all the way to Rock River or Laramie.

Late-season elk hunts in Little Siberia might be a real challenge, Larsen said.

“During the winter, a lot of the time, you just can’t get back in there,” he said.

Residents are used to being cut off from the rest of the world during the winter. It can take county road crews based in Rock River all day to clear 100 miles of roads in Little Siberia.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission met in Riverton April 16-17 to discuss and approve the annual hunting season regulations and quotas. After hearing season presentations and reviewing public comments, the Commission passed the 2024 hunting season regulations and quotas.

The finalized season information is available on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website . Hunters who have already applied are encouraged to  check the hunt areas they applied for to see if any changes occurred during the season-setting process. The department's Hunt Planner tool will be updated with the approved seasons by the beginning of May.

Game and Fish personnel provided the Commission with an update on trapping, the Speas Fish Hatchery cool/warm-water facility and landowner licenses. Additionally, the department and partners provided a presentation on the Dubois U.S. Highway 26 construction project. The Commission also listened to significant public comment on the Sublette County wolf incident.

The next Commission meeting is May 21-22 in Dubois and will coincide with the Wyoming Sportsperson Conservation Forum that will be held at the National Museum of Military Vehicles.

Embracing the Wild West: What a vacation in Wyoming entails

How the global fondness for western narratives boosts wyoming’s tourism.

Popular shows like “Yellowstone” and “1883″ prove the country’s Wild West history still fascinates people worldwide. There are still places in the U.S. that are prime Western cultural destinations where people can immerse themselves in the world of cowboys and outlaws — and brides.

While on a scenic rafting tour in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, Diane Shober, the executive director for Wyoming’s Office of Tourism, told the Deseret News she and her family were approaching Dornans, a resort in the park, when they saw a bride on the balcony.

“She’s out on the dock, and she’s got her dress, and she’s like pointing and waving, and we’re waving back to her,” but Shober said it took her and her group a minute to realize the bride wasn’t waving simply to be friendly but was actually trying to get their attention.

“Right there, right by us, was a black bear and two cubs,” she said. “They were eating berries, but we were so focused on the bride we didn’t notice.”

“You don’t always pay attention to what is there,” Shober added. “There’s this whole part of our natural environment that’s, you know, living and thriving and adjusting right around us.”

Visiting cowboy country

Wyoming’s wide open spaces allow people from all walks of life to immerse themselves in nature and experience the Wild West, unique to American culture. In 2023, the state’s “travel spending increased 5.1% from $4.5 billion in 2022 to $4.7 billion in 2023. Adjusted for inflation travel spending (still) increased 2.6%,” according to the Wyoming Travel Impacts report .

For a state with a population of less than 600,000 living permanently within its borders, the Cowboy State relies on its natural beauty to grow its economy through tourism, and it can do so through its multiseasonal activities.

In the summertime alone, visitors can choose from a wide array of outdoor activities:

• The Cheyenne Frontier Days .
• The Sheridan Rodeo .
• Biking in the Bighorn National Forest .
• White-water rafting the Snake River .
• Ride the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram .
• Dig up fossils to take home as souvenirs.

Hailey Mach, personal relations manager for the Wyoming Office of Tourism, told the Deseret News the selling point of visiting Wyoming is simply “disconnecting from technology and really, really reconnecting with nature once again.”

“With inflation, people are really trying to find inexpensive trips that will allow them to still have wonderful memories with their family,” Mach emphasized.

There are over 200 dude ranches in the state of Wyoming, ranging in affordability and offering everything from spa days to taking care of your own horse for the week — all while surrounded by some of the country’s most impressive national parks.

“Many Wyoming dude ranches include excursions into Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park. Hundreds of trails traverse the parks, providing access to deep backcountry areas, remote lakes, and scenic overlooks. Moose, elk, and bear inhabit this stunning area and are frequently spotted during guided excursions,” according to The Dude Ranchers Association .

“Wyoming is off the beaten path,” Shober emphasized. “There’s a lot of room to roam. And I think you’ll find it there if that’s what you want. Almost every place is off the beaten path.”

Mom reunited with kids after husband arrested in Turks and Caicos for ammunition

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Gray News) - An Oklahoma mom had an emotional reunion with her two kids Tuesday, but one family member was missing.

Valerie Watson has spent more than a week out of the country. She and her husband Ryan were held in Turks and Caicos after bullets were inadvertently left in their luggage after a hunting trip.

It’s a serious offense on those islands, with a minimum prison sentence of 12 years. Officials released Valerie Watson on Monday but locked up her husband.

“We know that God’s still working, and he’s working through us,” Valerie Watson said.

“I’ve been thinking about this moment for a while,” she said of being reunited with her kids. “I didn’t know when it was going to happen. I was prepared to also be arrested yesterday.”

The Watsons have some help in their fight. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt sent a letter to government officials in Turks and Caicos on April 16. He calls Watson “an avid outdoorsman,” arguing the ammunition was “an inadvertent oversight, not an intentional attempt to break the law. "

The office of Sen. Markwayne Mullin said they’ve been in touch with the family and are doing everything they can to help.

Valerie Watson said she’s been anticipating embracing her children.

“I don’t even have words to describe it. Just getting to hold them again, it just filled my momma heart. It made me so happy. It just gives me a lot of comfort to know that I get to be here with them now. But my wife heart is still breaking because Ryan’s not with me,” she said.

Valerie Watson said that there’s still work to be done to get her family back together.

“Routine has never sounded better, but I know our life is different. And our goal is to get Ryan home because we can’t be a family without Dad,” she said.
