Current travel statuses for counties across Michiana

(WNDU) - Some counties in our viewing area are currently under a travel advisory due to the recent inclement weather here in Michiana.

As of 4:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday, four of the nine northern Indiana counties in our viewing area are under a travel advisory. They are listed below:

YELLOW : Elkhart, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Starke

In Indiana, county travel status information is provided by each county’s emergency management agency. As counties initiate official travel advisories and notify the state, they will be automatically updated at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s website .

Counties that are YELLOW are under an ADVISORY , which is the lowest level of local travel advisory. It means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and you should use caution or avoid those areas.

Counties that are ORANGE are under a WATCH , meaning that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended. This is also when emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.

Counties that are RED are under a WARNING , which is the highest level of local travel advisory. It means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. Under this advisory, you are urged to:

• Refrain from all travel
• Comply with necessary emergency measures
• Cooperate with public officials and disaster services forces in executing emergency operations plans
• Obey and comply with the lawful directions of properly identified officers.

UPDATE: St. Joseph County downgrades Travel Warning

More a few hours Tuesday morning St. Joseph County remained the last Indiana county under a Travel Warning -- that ended at noon.

A warning is the highest level of local travel advisory and asks people to refrain from all driving.

St. Joseph County police said they would ticket non-emergency drivers caught on the roads.

"Ultimately it's going to be the officer's discretion," said Lt. Matt Blank, "if you go out and you don't have a good cause to be on the road and you cause a problem, whether it be an accident or simply just getting stranded because you're out when you're not supposed to be, then you face a strong possibility of receiving a citation for that."

Elkhart County downgraded from a Warning to a Watch at 10 a.m.

St. Joseph County downgraded at noon, say officials.

It joins all other Indiana counties in our area under a travel watch, which recommends only essential travel, such as trips to and from work. Tickets will not be written for using the roads.

Also starting at noon, South Bend lifted its ban on vehicles on the roads. City offices are still closed for the day, however.

South Bend's snow parking regulations will be in effect from 6 am to 6 pm Wednesday and Thursday, January 29 and 30, to facilitate safe and efficient curb-to-curb snow removal.

On Wednesday, January 29, there is no parking on east-west streets. On Thursday, January 30, there is no parking on north-south streets.

Cass County lifted its driving ban at noon. The county issued this statement regarding plowing:

"Residents should note that Cass County Road Commission crews diligently continue working to clear snow from the roads, with continued focus on primary and local roadways. Area residents should note that subdivisions, lakes area neighborhoods, and some local roads are not likely to get plowed until later this week, depending on continued weather developments."

The driving ban for St. Joseph County, Michigan residents was also lifted at noon.
