“Peace Train” by Yusuf/ Cat Stevens (1971)

Toward the end of the Vietnam War, songs about peace were common in popular music, and Stevens’ folk-pop hit made the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 in 1971. “Now I’ve been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is/ Why must we go on hating, why can’t we live in bliss?/ ‘Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train/ Oh, peace train take this country, come take me home again”

“Train Wreck” by James Arthur (2016)

James Arthur’s powerful voice shines on this honest track about battling dark emotions and looking for a way out from the toxic path of drugs and depression. “Find hope in the hopeless/ Pull me out of the train wreck/ Unburn the ashes/ Unchain the reactions, I’m not ready to die, not yet.”

“Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne (1980)

From Ozzy’s debut solo album Blizzard of Oz, the iconic chords in this song about a train are some of the best known. “Going off the rails on a crazy train” is about struggling with mental unrest, specifically dealing with the aftermath of the Cold War. But hey, “It’s not too late to learn how to love, and forget how to hate.”

“Girl on a Train” by Skizzy Mars (2016)

A chill rap song about meeting a beautiful stranger on the train, this Skizzy track is the ultimate Brooklyn almost-love story. “I fell in love before I even got her name/ And I ain’t even know where she was going/ But she broke my heart when her stop came/ On the L with some headphones on.”

“Long Train Runnin’” by The Doobie Brothers (1973)

The Doobie Brothers’ harmony into harmonica on this track has the ultimate ’70s groove. “You know I saw miss Lucy down along the tracks/ She lost her home and her family and she won’t be coming back.”

“The Train” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (2016)

This bilingual ballad featuring Carla Marrison narrates the perspective of a disconnected nomad, always traveling far from family and loved ones. “Always on the road tryna earn a livin’/ I remember when I bought my first ticket/ I been going, haven’t turned back since then.”

“Train in Vain” by The Clash (1979)

Fun Fact: This classic Clash breakup song from London Calling was added to the album last-minute after the artwork was finalized and therefore wasn’t included in the track list.

“Long Black Train” by Josh Turner (2003)

Josh Turner was a student at Belmont University when he wrote this song about a shiny black train symbolizing temptation. In an interview,  he revealed that he had a vision of people deciding whether to get on or not. “Somehow they knew that this train led to nowhere, but they were wondering what it would be like to ride on it.” 

“Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum (1992)

On the enduring ’90s grunge hit, Soul Asylum’s frontman Dave Pirner told Spin , “Somehow I flipped the lyrics into a metaphor about depression.” He continued, “It’s almost embarrassing when I think about how personal it is. The things that were happening at that time in my life were really questioning my own mental health.” 

“C’mon ‘N’ Ride It (The Train)” by Quad City DJs (1996)

No song about a train could get us as hyped as this one. Dynamic metaphors, a vibrant dance video and a lyrical reference to  The Little Engine That Could  make this Quad City DJs jam stand out from the rest.

“Train Kept a Rollin’” by Aerosmith (1974)

A rad guitar solo opens this song about a train that kept rollin’ all night long. Originally recorded by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951, “Train Kept a Rollin” got a sexed-up classic-rock makeover courtesy of Steven Tyler in 1974.

“Train Ride Home” by lofi.samurai (2018)

A lo-fi atmospheric tune perfect for activities along the lines of studying, vibing and chilling. Completely instrumental aside from a cheeky interlude about ice cream, this one’s a deep cut.

“Trainwreck” by Banks (2016)

The video for Banks’ dark electro-pop anthem about heading the wrong way trying to get away is like a sexy episode of Black Mirror. 

“Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight & The Pips (1973)

This ’70s R&B classic — about a man who doesn’t find the stardom he was looking for in L.A. and heads back to Georgia — won the Grammy in 1974 for best R&B vocal performance.

“Night Train” by Jason Aldean (2012)

Aldean’s romantic, twangy jam about getting cozy with “a fifth of Comfort” and a blanket under the stars makes snuggling in a field by the train tracks actually sound appealing. Nothing like warmth and whiskey to spark the mood. 

“Love Train” by The OJs (1972)

Another end of the Vietnam War-era cry for peace, “Love Train” encourages everyone from China to Israel, Russia to England to get onboard and embrace each other. It’s impossible not to smile along with this infectious groove.

“Midnight Train to Memphis” by Chris Stapleton (2017)

Chris Stapleton’s rich voice delivers a little country rock and roll about spending 40 days in prison, and “Forty nights to sit and listen/ To the midnight train to Memphis.” 

“Last Train Home” by Blink-182 (2016)

From Blink’s 2017 album California , Mark Hoppus told Kerrang  that the song was partially inspired by The Sympathizer, a story about a communist double agent in Los Angeles after the Vietnam War. 

“Midnight Train” by Sam Smith (2017)

At the mysterious midnight hour, a mournful lover walks away from a relationship that just isn’t working anymore. Smith’s tender and honest vocals make a heartbreaking confession on “Midnight Train”: “I choose me, and I know that’s selfish love, you are a dream/ And I can’t thank you enough, but I give another piece of me away every waking day that I’m with you.”

The 55+ Best Songs With Train In the Title

All aboard! For this list we're ranking the best songs about trains ever written. Trains are a great way to travel and a fantastic topic for songs. Some of the best songs that mention trains are traveling songs, while others only allude to trains without ever mentioning them. Trains are often used a metaphor for life, like in John Mayer's beautiful song "Stop This Train".

Johnny Cash wrote and performed several of the best train songs. His lyrics to “Folsom Prison Blues” contain the words train and track. Another song that specifically references trains is “Casey Jones” by the Grateful Dead, although the train conductor in this song doesn't sound like the most responsible man on the tracks.

A great R&B train song is “People Get Ready” by Curtis Mayfield. The Chemical Brothers track, “Star Guitar,” contains no lyrics, but the repetitive sounds conjure train imagery. Also, trains and railroad tracks are featured in the song's video, which was directed by Michel Gondry.

Even today, trains are very important for commerce, but they used to be one of the most reliable forms of transportation. You can also make almost limitless metaphors with trains, which makes them perfect for music.

In this article, we’ll look at 31 songs about trains and locomotives and show you that they appear much more often in all-time classics than you might think. 

1. Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey

After this song came out, a midnight train to anywhere became one of the most famous trains in the entire world. Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey is an all-time classic for people looking for a way out of their boring lives and who want to get away from everything. If nothing else, the opening verses of this track are some of the best-known ones out there and they include trains, so it’ll count.

2. Long Black Train – Josh Turner

The long black train in this Josh Turner song is really a metaphor for temptation. It’s always coming towards you and could round the bend at any time. The engineer of this one is also stated to be the devil, so not a train you want to hop on. The track is a reminder to hold tight to the Lord and avoid letting temptation trip you up. 

3. You Never Even Called Me By My Name – David Allen Coe

This track from David Allen Coe is one of the best country songs of all time . He spends most of the time comparing himself to other country artists, which turns into a who’s who of the genre. The chorus is one of the best ones out there too, but none of that is why it makes this list.

At the end of the track, he talks about writing the perfect country and western song of all time but rejects what is apparently this track up to that point because it doesn’t mention trains, moms, prison, drugs, or getting drunk. So, an additional verse gets added on that sees him try to pick his mom up from the prison, but she, unfortunately, gets run over by a damned old train.

4. Crazy Train – Ozzy Osbourne

Hop aboard the Prince of Darkness’s mind-altering train with his song. While it isn’t a physical train, you can surely come along for the ride. Crazy Train is one of his most iconic tracks, but it mainly deals with the fear of total destruction that ran rampant throughout the years of the Cold War . 

5. Folsom Prison Blues – Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash is a name that’s going to appear several times on this list. He talked about trains quite a bit. But Folsom Prison Blues is one of the most iconic songs he ever released and the perfect example of his music. Most of his instrumentals chugged along just like a train does, with no track sounding like it more than this one. From the opening lines of hearing that train coming and shooting a man just to watch him die, this one is an all-time best in any category. 

6. Night Train – Jason Aldean

The title track of Jason Aldean’s 2012 album, Night Train , is all about a couple of lovers finding the perfect spot to watch a train pass. You know they’re out really late too since the night trains don’t run until the wee hours of the morning to help avoid traffic pileups.

7. Peace Train – Cat Stevens

Peace Train came out in response to the chaos surrounding the Vietnam War . Cat Stevens called it his own anthem for peace, advocating for nonviolent solutions to world issues and hoping for the end of conflicts. It became a standard song for his live shows for a long time and holds an incredibly important message that still resonates today.

8. Train Kept a Rollin’ – Aerosmith

Train Kept A Rollin’ started out as a track by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951 , but Aerosmith picked it up and turned it into a massive classic rock song. Throw in a few of their awesome guitar solos, and you’ve got a track about a train chugging along to headbang to. 

9. Midnight Train To Georgia – Gladys Knight & The Pips

Midnight Train To Georgia is an R&B classic. After a man heads out to Los Angeles in search of fame, he realizes it isn’t going his way. He hops on a train going back to his home in Georgia to try to figure out the rest of his life. 

10. Love Train – The O’Jays

Love Train has that soulful enthusiasm that makes it hard to not give your neighbor a hug the next time you see them. It’s another train song that pleads for an end to the Vietnam War and begs for peace. It’s really a groovy version of the many anti-war tracks to come out during that time period. 

11. Last Train Home – Blink-182

Last Train Home sees a defeated man looking for a way home. Their motivations are all gone, and they just want some semblance of hope back in their lives, willing to do anything to find a cause that makes them feel alive. 

12. Wabash Cannonball – Johnny Cash

Wabash Cannonball has the distinction of being the oldest song on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the 500 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time. Johnny Cash’s version is a cover of an even older folk song about a fictional train called the Wabash Cannonball that ran through the Midwest way back in the early days of America.

13. Midnight Train to Memphis – Chris Stapleton

Trains run on a pretty regular schedule. You can sometimes figure out what time it is just by when a train goes by. Chris Stapleton finds himself stuck in jail for not being able to pay a fine in this song, marking the passing of the days by the midnight train he hears rumbling along on its way to Memphis each night.

14. Locomotive Breath – Jethro Tull

Locomotive Breath is one of Jethro Tull’s most famous songs and was designed to sound just like a chugging train engine. It was written as a comment on population growth, but it would be used in a lot of other media like the film Jumanji and on the TV show Supernatural . 

15. Rock N Roll Train – AC/DC

Rock N Roll Train is an example of AC/DC still having it after decades together as a band. It came out in 2008, rising to the top of a few different Billboard charts and becoming a popular song on TV promos for sports events. 

16. Runaway Train – Soul Asylum

Runaway Train is all about personal depression and how quickly your mental health can get away from you. If you struggle with mental issues, you have to constantly keep working on them or have some sort of control or it’ll take off like a runaway train. Elizabeth Cotten is one of the best guitar players in history , so anything she wrote is going to be worth listening to. Freight Train was inspired by the train rumbling she could hear from her childhood home and how she wondered where it was headed. 

18. The Wreck of The Old 97 – Johnny Cash

You should always tell your loved one that you love them before you walk out the door, especially if your job involves some level of risk. The Wreck Of The Old 97 sees Johnny Cash giving this message to his listeners by telling the story of a man who died in a deadly train crash. 

19. Driver 8 – R.E.M.

Driver 8 is a direct reference to the Southern Crescent route that has operated since 1891. It never became one of R.E.M.’s most popular songs, but that didn’t stop it from being covered by a lot of other artists. 

20. Hear My Train A Comin’ – Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix never recorded this song in a studio, it was one of the tracks he only played live. Eventually, an early piece of it was found and included on one of his compilation albums, but that didn’t happen until the 90s. 

21. Last Train To Clarksville – The Monkees

Last Train To Clarksville sees a young man getting drafted into the Vietnam War and has to deal with all of the emotions that go along with the process. Will he make it home? The Monkees produced the song to add another voice to the protest over the Vietnam War and the draft process the United States used for it. 

22. Casey Jones – Grateful Dead

Grateful Dead used the legend of Casey Jones to create a track about drug use. It sees a conductor high on cocaine driving too fast and heading right toward another train on the track that’s being driven by a sleepy man. They also played the folk song The Ballad Of Casey Jones in shows often, with that track helping inspire this one. 

23. Mystery Train – Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley owns the most popular version of Mystery Train , seeing the narrator take a spooky train ride that seems to be on its way to the land of the dead. Junior Parker was the original writer of the song, releasing it in 1953 , two years before Presley recorded his version of it. 

24. Downtown Train – Tom Waits

Downtown Train is a popular song for artists to record, but Tom Waits was the first one to put it on record. It sees him trying to deal with the pace of living in a big city and looking for a way to be with the woman he loves despite her barely knowing he exists. 

25. Take The A Train – Duke Ellington

Take The A Train would eventually become one of Duke Ellington’s signature songs and one of the tracks he played most in live shows. It was inspired by the route he often had to take through the Harlem district of New York, riding the A-train between destinations. It’s also one of the few tracks with a jazz solo that doesn’t get changed every performance, a rare treat in the genre.

Train Of Consequences became one of Megadeth’s biggest songs, serving as the first single from their sixth album and appearing on several of their compilations. Instead of a locomotive, this track is about the consequences of gambling.

Trains don’t stop quickly. They really just keep going as long as they have fuel and feel like something unstoppable. John Mayer compares a train to the unstoppable and ever-driving nature of time in Stop This Train , a song that’s really about wishing time could stop or go backward for a little bit.

They’re stuck dealing with a lot, making it a somber song, but the train is interrupting the small amount of peace they’re getting.

Music has the power to transport us, change our moods, and conjure memories. And, for many travelers, music is closely linked to travel. It can helps us understand the people and culture of a place, break down language barriers, and sear certain moments into our memories forever.

With help from members of our Travel Community and Going staff, we've created the ultimate travel playlist of 100 travel songs. Some reference specific places, others showcase the musical talent of a specific country, and others simply celebrate the joy of exploration.

Here, in no particular order, are 100 of our favorite travel songs.

56 songs that reference specific places in the title or lyrics

Sure, some of these songs, such Paris by the Chainsmokers or Toto’s Africa , actually have little to do with the specific place; it’s just used as the title or the setting for the story. But others not only reference a country or city, they also evoke a specific sense of that particular place or tell a story about that destination.

For example, in Marrakech Express , Crosby, Stills & Nash recount scenes from a train ride Nash actually took in 1966. In London Calling , the Clash sing about the social issues facing London in the late 70s. In Walking in Memphis , Marc Cohn croons about his experience wandering the city. And Simon & Garfunkel's America was inspired by a road trip that Paul Simon took with his girlfriend.

Johann Strauss I: Eisenbahn-Lust Waltz (Railway Delight Waltz), 1836

The elder Johann Strauss’s Eisenbahn-Lust celebrated the opening of the first public railway line out of Vienna, to Breclav (now Břeclav, in the Czech Republic). It begins – and sort of ends – with steam locomotive sounds and is the first of several railway pieces by members of the Strauss family, keen as they were to cash in on this fast-expanding industry.

Glinka: Travelling Song (The Train Song), 1840

Described by the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as “probably the first ever railway song”, Glinka’s express Travelling Song is a setting of a text by his friend Nestor Kukolnik. It contains such lines as “The train shoots forward and speeds through the countryside / freer than the wind .” The music is suitably clickety-click.

Alkan: Le Chemin de Fer, 1844

Charles Alkan was a friend of Chopin and Liszt who composed piano music of considerable technical complexity and adventurousness. An example of this (though hardly the greatest) is Le Chemin de Fer, a five-minute moto perpetuo evoking what was then an entirely new speed.

Berlioz: Le Chant des Chemins de Fer, 1846

Berlioz’s grand cantata for tenor and six-part chorus was commissioned by the Chemin de Fer du Nord to mark the opening of the Paris to Lille and Brussels railway line in June 1846. Having just undertaken an arduous European tour largely by stagecoach, Berlioz was an enthusiastic advocate of train travel and jumped at the chance, completing the work in a few days. It was performed in 1975 at a concert in the Royal Albert Hall celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and in 1994 at the launch ceremony of the Eurostar service.

Dvořák: Humoresque No 7, 1894

Dvořák was, literally, a trainspotter: he loved nothing more than visiting the Franz-Josef Station in Prague and loved chatting with locomotive engineers. Although he never expressed this passion in music, in the 1930s the tune of his popular Humoresque No 7 became the setting of a mildly scatological verse about one of the more potentially uncomfortable restrictions of train travel: “Passengers will please refrain from flushing toilets while the train is standing in the station.”

Grainger: Arrival Platform Humlet, 1908

Percy Grainger adored travelling by train, and during journeys loved to spread his manuscripts out and compose. In his own words, Arrival Platform Humlet (Humlet being a little ditty to hum) derived from: “awaiting the arrival of a belated train bringing one’s sweetheart from foreign parts: great fun! The sort of thing one hums to oneself as an accompaniment to one’s tramping feet as one happily, excitedly, paces up and down the arrival platform.” It was said to have been composed at London’s Liverpool Street and Victoria Stations in 1908.

Ives: From Hanover Square North, 1915-19, rev circa 1929

On 7 May 1915, the day the Lusitania was sunk by a German torpedo at the cost of more than 1,000 lives, Charles Ives was standing on an elevated railway platform listening to a barrel organ playing the song In the Sweet By-and-By. One by one, everyone in the station joined in. Ives recorded this extraordinary collective experience in From Hanover Square North, at the End of a Tragic Day, the Voice of the People Again Arose. Ives’s The Celestial Railroad , however, is arguably a more genuine piece of train music. The work was inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s fantastical short story in which a passenger boards a supposedly heaven-bound train.

Honegger: Pacific 231, 1923

“I have always loved locomotives passionately,” said Arthur Honegger. “For me they are living creatures, and I love them as others love women or horses.” The most famous railway-related piece was the result, although Honegger denied it was descriptive music. Nevertheless, in 1949, he didn’t object when Jean Mitry’s award-winning film Pacific 231, a tribute to the steam locomotive, used the work as its soundtrack.

Villa-Lobos: The Little Train of the Caipira, 1930

Part of Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No 2, The Little Train of the Caipira colourfully replicates the sounds of an ageing and rusting steam locomotive as it gradually stutters its way up to full speed across the Brazilian plain. Train music from the first-class compartment.

Britten: Night Mail, 1936

In 1936, Britten and the poet WH Auden were commissioned to provide music and text for the GPO documentary Night Mail. The film records the transport of mail by train from London, through the English shires and the industrial north, to early morning in rural Scotland and finally to Glasgow. To create the effect of a steam locomotive accumulating energy with the pistons driving the wheels, Britten utilised a most unorthodox percussion section, which included “Steam”, “Rail”, “Siren” and “Coal falling down shaft”. His research involved a freezing night on a railway platform. Dvořák, no doubt, would have loved it.

Phish at the Sphere: All the songs they played on opening night in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – As the second band to play the Sphere following a triumphant 40-show run by U2 , Phish had a high bar to clear.

The band – Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell – kicked off their four-show run April 18 with the mellow groove of “Everything’s Right" and kept rolling for four trippy hours presented in two sets and an encore. But the focus was as much about what the eternal jam-rockers would do in the enveloping arena as the adored band itself.

Towers of lights (on video) weaved and danced around the walls of the Sphere like a screensaver for the opening song. The visuals then expanded across the width of the mammoth curved walls with scenes of beaches and grassy expanses during “Back on The Train.”

Phish made clever use of the surroundings, whether mesmerizing with repetitive swirls of shapes or sending lighted fabric pods toward the roof during the ethereal “Leaves.” Floating antenna TVs, silhouettes of the band members in film-negative form, spectacular bursts of color and cars morphing in size and shape complemented songs including "Life Saving Gun" and "Tweezer."

Anastasio recently told SiriusXM that he wanted a "psychedelic" experience for fans attending the shows. Mission fully achieved.

But for a band more about music than personality, the quartet, which sounded crisp, could sometimes blend in with the oval stage and awe-inducing graphics. During the first set, Anastasio’s vocals were often difficult to decipher, but the multi-generational crowd eagerly compensated until the mixing was tweaked and the immersive sound kicked in.

Phish's sold-out Sphere run continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday. While the venue's website notes that these are the first performances of a "new relationship" between Phish and the Sphere, they are the only 2024 dates the band will play there.

A word of caution: Entering the venue can be a slog. It took a solid hour leading up to Thursday’s show for the herds of fans to inch their way toward the entrance down poorly ventilated hallways, so prepare accordingly.

Also, as even casual Phish followers know, the band will mix up their setlist for each show, presenting not only a unqiue run of material, but specialized graphics every night. Here is a look at the songs from their epic first Sphere concert.

Ukrainian duo heads to the Eurovision Song Contest with a message: We're still here

KYIV, Ukraine — Even amid war, Ukraine finds time for the glittery, pop-filled Eurovision Song Contest . Perhaps now even more than ever.

Ukraine’s entrants in the pan-continental music competition — the female duo of rapper alyona alyona and singer Jerry Heil — set off from Kyiv for the competition on Thursday. In wartime, that means a long train journey to Poland, from where they will travel on to next month’s competition in Malmö, Sweden.

“We need to be visible for the world,” Heil told The Associated Press at Kyiv train station before her departure. “We need to show that even now, during the war, our culture is developing, and that Ukrainian music is something waiting for the world” to discover.

“We have to spread it and share it and show people how strong (Ukrainian) women and men are in our country,” added alyona, who spells her name with all lower case letters.

Ukraine has long used Eurovision as a form of cultural diplomacy, a way of showing the world the country’s unique sound and style. That mission became more urgent after Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that Ukraine existed as a distinct country and people before Soviet times.

Ukrainian singer Jamala won the contest in 2016 — two years after Russia illegally seized the Crimean Peninsula — with a song about the expulsion of Crimea’s Tatars by Stalin in 1944. Folk-rap band Kalush Orchestra took the Eurovision title in 2022 with “Stefania,” a song about the frontman’s mother that became an anthem to the war-ravaged motherland, with a haunting refrain on a traditional Ukrainian wind instrument.

Alyona and Heil will perform “Teresa & Maria,” an anthemic ode to inspiring women. The title refers to Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary, and the lyrics include the refrain, in English: “All the divas were born as the human beings” — people we regard as saints were once flawed and human like the rest of us.

Heil said the message is that “we all make mistakes, but your actions are what define you.”

And, alyona added: “with enough energy you can win the war, you can change the world.”

The song blends alyona’s punchy rap style with Heil’s soaring melody and distinctly Ukrainian vocal style.

“Alyona is a great rapper, she has this powerful energy,” Heil said. “And I’m more soft.”

“But great melodies,” alyona added. “So she creates all the melodies and I just jump in.”

Ukraine has been at the forefront of turning Eurovision from a contest dominated by English-language pop songs to a more diverse and multilingual event. Jamala sang part of her song in the Crimean Tatar language, while Kalush Orchestra sang and rapped in Ukrainian.

Ukraine’s Eurovision win in 2022 brought the country the right to host the following year, but because of the war the 2023 contest was held in the English city of Liverpool, which was bedecked in blue and yellow Ukrainian flags for the occasion — a celebration of Ukraine’s spirit and culture.

Thirty-seven countries from across Europe and beyond — including Israel and Australia — will compete in Malmö in two Eurovision semifinals May 7 and 9, followed by a May 11 final. Ukraine currently ranks among bookmakers’ top five favorites alongside the likes of singer Nemo from Switzerland and Croatian singer-songwriter Baby Lasagna.

Russia, a long-time Eurovision competitor, was kicked out of the contest over the invasion.

The Ukrainian duo caught a train after holding a news conference where they announced a fundraising drive for a school destroyed by a Russian strike.

The duo is joining with charity fundraising platform United 24 to raise 10 million hryvnia (about $250,000) to rebuild a school in the village of Velyka Kostromka in southern Ukraine that was destroyed by a Russian rocket in October 2022. The school’s 250 pupils have been unable to attend class since then, relying on online learning.

Teacher Liudmyla Taranovych, whose children and grandchildren went to the school, said its destruction brought feelings of “pain, despair, hopelessness.”

“My grandchildren hugged me and asked, “Grandma, will they rebuild our school? Will it be as beautiful, flourishing, and bright as it was?” she said.

From the rubble, another teacher managed to rescue one of the school’s treasured possessions — a large wooden key traditionally presented to first grade students to symbolize that education is the key to their future. It has become a sign of hope for the school.

Alyona and Heil have also embraced the key as a symbol, wearing T-shirts covered in small metal housekeys.

“It’s a symbol of something which maybe some people in Ukraine won’t have, because so many people lost their homes,” Heil said. “But they’re holding these keys in their pockets, and they’re holding the hope.”
