McCormick Hall

Reserve a room |, virtual tour, tour of mccormick hall 2018, what’s in each room.

Every room has a bed, desk, chair, and book case for each occupant. In the East and West Towers, there is a built-in bureau for each uncrowded occupant. The bureaus contain a small vanity with a mirror and light, drawers, a closet space, and storage cabinets. In crowded rooms, an armoire is added to accommodate the storage needs of the added person. East Tower rooms have carpeting, while West Tower and Annex rooms are tiled. Heating is provided, but there is no air conditioning. There is access to the MIT wireless networks throughout McCormick, and there is a ethernet port that can accommodate an internet connection in each room. Housing also has their own Virtual Tour which can be accessed here.

Each floor is corridor style and has a kitchen, two communal bathrooms, and a “laundry room” equipped with two large sinks, an ironing board and iron, and a clothes drying rack. Washers and and dryers are located in the basement. Graduate Resident Advisors (GRAs) live on floors 3, 4, and 6, and are each responsible for residents on two floors. Each floor contains doubles facing the Charles River and Kresge Oval, as well as singles facing the courtyard and Green Hall, for a total of about 26 residents per floor. The second floor has only seven residents with a kitchen, lounge, and bathroom because the Housemasters’ apartment occupies the other half of the floor. Rooms and hallways in the West Tower do not have carpeting. Floors in the West Tower can be accessed by the elevator or stairs.

The images below depict a triple in the West Tower. This room would typically be a double, but may be crowded to be a triple (as shown). It includes a bed, desk, bookcase, and dresser for each person living in the room:

Every floor has two suites, each with a kitchen and communal bathroom. The GRAs live on floors 3, 5, and 7, and are each responsible for residents on two floors. Each suite contains approximately 8 to 10 single rooms, with various sizes as described below. All rooms and hallways in east tower have carpeting, while kitchens and bathrooms are tiled. Floors in the East Tower can be accessed using the elevator or stairs.

Types of Singles in the East Tower:

BOX: A “box” is the third largest single in McCormick. Rooms x24, x26, x34, x37 (where “x” denotes the floor number) are boxes.

SHOEBOX: A “shoebox” is the smallest single in McCormick. Room numbers of shoeboxes are x21, x30, x31, x40 (where “x” denotes the floor number).

CORNERS : These rooms are the second-smallest singles in the dorm. Rooms x22, x29, x32, x39 (where “x” denotes the floor number) are corners.

L : An “L” is the second-largest single room in McCormick (the largest is the first floor single in the Annex). The room is so named because there is a little alcove area that makes the room into an “L” shape. Rooms numbered x23, x28, x33, x38 (where “x” denotes the floor number) are L’s.

The images below depict an shoebox, the smallest type of single in the East Tower. A typical single has the following furniture: a bed, a desk, a bookcase, and a dresser:

The Annex is a small three-story row house that was added to McCormick in 1999. Each floor has three or four rooms—mostly double and triples, with a couple of singles. The Annex first floor single is the largest single in McCormick and is the only one that is handicapped-accessible. Each floor has a communal bathroom. A large kitchen on the first floor is shared by the whole Annex. The floor tutor is on the 2nd floor. The Annex has its own lounge, laundry, and storage facilities in the basement. The floors of the annex are linked by staircases.

In the basement there are two soda machines, a snack machine, the Game Room, the Laundry Room (with washers, dryers, folding tables, and sinks), and storage rooms.

Until a floor reaches a unanimous vote at a floor meeting, the bathroom(s) for the floor are single sex (women only). There is a men’s bathroom on the first floor and a unisex bathroom in the East Penthouse.

Kitchens & Lounges

In the East and West Towers, each kitchen has a stove, a sink, a cabinet for each resident, and a refrigerator. While each resident can store a small amount in the floor/suite fridge, many residents choose to have their own mini fridges in their rooms. The amount of cupboard space varies depending on the floor, and most the of the cabinets are capable of being locked (you provide the lock). Students are responsible for bringing cooking and eating implements (some items can be borrow from the House Government-run Dish Closet), and they are responsible for keeping the kitchens clean. Cleaning staff mop the floor and wipe the counters.

The lounges are on odd floors of East Tower and the second floor of West Tower. The lounge has a study area space and a TV which includes subscriptions like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO, xFinity on Campus, etc. for residents to use.

The West Tower has one kitchen per floor. Odd-numbered East Tower floors have one kitchen and one lounge; even-numbered East Tower floors have two kitchens.

There are two penthouses: the East Penthouse and the West Penthouse. Each has a lounge space with an amazing view of Boston and the Charles River. The East Penthouse also contains the gym, music room, and the Kitchen in the Clouds. There is also an herb garden surrounding the East Penthouse that the GRAs maintain. These penthouses can be reserved through the Room Reservation Chair. To get to the West Penthouse you must take the stairs from 7W, but you can reach the East Penthouse with the elevator.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Transfers: 2024 Requirements, Dates, GPAs & More

How effective are massachusetts institute of technology (mit) virtual tours.

It depends how you use them. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a hustling, bustling campus and community. The beauty of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) virtual tours on CampusReel is that authentic video tours, made by real students, can be spectacular at capturing the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) vibe. We also go well beyond the confines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus by taking you around Cambridge. In traditional virtual tours, you will mostly see still, unengaging images and will not see the surrounding area at all – which is why CampusReel virtual tours are so important.

Can a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) virtual tour replace a traditional in-person visit?

If you cannot visit Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in person, then we can honestly say that we believe a CampusReel virtual tour of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is absolutely the most effective and holistic way to understand the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) people, campus and community. However, if you do plan on visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and other colleges in person, we strongly recommend that you at least prescreen your college options on CampusReel before spending the time and money to visit. Most prospective families find that as soon as the step on campus, they instantly know whether or not they like the school – but they’ve already spent all that time and money getting there! Our goal is to eliminate all the time and money visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in person until you can make a strong educated guess that it’s worth the investment.

What places can I virtually tour at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ?

For your convenience, below is a list of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) places you can virtually tour on CampusReel.

  • MIT Building 4 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Ames St at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Kresge Auditorium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Killian Court at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Stratton Student Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Department of Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Hayden Memorial Library at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Great Dome at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Maseeh Hall at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • MIT.nano at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • MIT Comparative Media Studies/Writing at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Baker House at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Ray and Maria Stata Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Walker Memorial at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • 320 Memorial Dr at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Cambridge at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Green Bldg at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Eastman Court at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • MIT Media Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • MIT Recreation - Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • 118 Amherst St at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • 119 Amherst St at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Dr Paul Dudley White Bike Path at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

What are the downsides of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) virtual tour?

The downside of virtually touring Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on CampusReel is that, admittedly, our technology does not yet mimic the exact feeling and experience of visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in person. We are working on this though! A common request we also receive from users is to add more perspectives (e.g. student guides) to the platform. Rest assured we are working on adding more CampusReel guides to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) virtual tour. However, our selection of guides still far outweighs the available perspectives of traditional virtual tour platforms.

What are the benefits of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) virtual tour?

The most obvious benefit of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) virtual tour on CampusReel is that is can be accessed from anywhere. This can save families a lot of time and money compared to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in person . Another often overlooked benefit of a CampusReel virtual tour is that it goes far beyond a traditional in person tour Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) . Campus visits are limited both in time and scope – how are you expected to truly understand a college in a 1 hour tour? That’s why we stress the added benefit of CampusReel virtual tours – experience Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Cambridge during different seasons, days of the week, and even hours of the day. What’s game day like? What is finals week life? Again, traditional virtual touring platforms don’t include this benefit.

Education & Outreach

Explore MIT's Nuclear Reactor Lab through a unique opportunity to tour the MIT Reactor (MITR) and its facilities, offered to school groups, professionals, and the public. Choose between our   in-person and virtual  lectures and tours to learn facts and insights about nuclear science, radiation safety, how we use the MITR, and our reactor is operated. Lectures and tours aren't offered outside of normal business hours or on MIT Holidays . We're excited to feed your curiosity about nuclear science and engineering through our lectures and tours!

In-Person Tour Requests

When we're accepting tour requests again...

In-person tours for groups of up to 20 people run on weekdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm, and last 60-90 minutes. Please request tours at least 7 business days in advance , with a 2:00pm latest start time if having an optional lecture. Small groups (5 or fewer people) and individuals can join tours based on availability listed on the tour request form. Larger groups should submit a  contact form  before submitting a tour request to discuss if we'd be able to accommodate the size of the group.

The reactor shuts down for quarterly routine maintenance outages during the first two to two-and-a-half weeks of January, April, July, and October. We do not offer tours during our quarterly outages. Each request is manually reviewed by one person; please reach out to [email protected] if your requested tour dates are within the next 2 weeks and you haven't heard back about your request (delays are usually based on form submission volume)

➡️ If you have 5 or fewer people in your group, you'll need to select a predetermined tour date and time. Help us offer combined general interest tours that match people's actual availabilities by  submitting this survey

Virtual Tour Registration

Individuals or groups can sign up for a virtual tour using the form below - our virtual tours don't have a participant limit. Our virtual tours have a 60-minute dedicated time slot to accommodate questions from the audience, but can end early or run long depending on questions or discussion at the end (we love questions!).

After being introduced to the design and use of the MITR in a few primer slides, you’ll watch footage of the stops along our in-person tour route while being live-narrated by one of our staff members. Virtual tours are family-friendly and available to the public. Educational or large sized groups can request a private tour, with or without a full 60 minute lecture presentation before the tour, by submitting a contact form inquiry .

Here are some bonus videos to introduce you to our facility before you come for a tour or have your virtual one. These videos are different than our virtual tour and can help tour participants become more engaged by introducing them to topics in advance to create a small amount of familiarity behind them.
