Nassau County Family Friendly Day Trips

New York residents and out-of-town visitors can find plenty to do with the family on summer days in Nassau County!

Long Island’s Museum Row – Something Fun for Everyone!

Begin your morning with a visit to the Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM). The expansive museum is filled with interactive exhibits to encourage your children’s creativity, live theater, art spaces, and plenty of unique daily activities. The museum is suitable for children of all ages and has won numerous awards for its exhibitions, practices, and educational components. Children under one can explore for free, while admission is $17 for children one and older and adults.

After exploring the museum, ride on Nunley’s Carousel right next door. Not only is the carousel open to ride year-round thanks to its glass enclosure and heated interior, but it also has an accessible seat for riders in need. Visit their website for operating hours, as it’s typically only open on weekend afternoons.

While the young ones explore LICM, older children in your family can experience the wonders of the Cradle of Aviation , Long Island’s Air and Space Museum. Here, you can explore Long Island’s aerospace heritage throughout the mammoth 150,000-square-foot space. Patrons can investigate the museum’s multitude of exhibits, which feature 75 air- and spacecrafts (Apollo Lunar Module included), watch some of the offered short films, take a seat in the planetarium, and even get hands-on inside cockpits. You and your family may be surprised to learn just how much Long Island has contributed to the advancement of aviation. And, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the return of the museum’s Arcade Age exhibit, which reopens in 2025. The exhibit features more than 60 (playable!) arcade games of yesteryear and allows you to explore the fascinating history of video games. Get your Pacman fingers ready!

There are countless local restaurants within driving distance of the museums, and you can pick your favorites based on what the family’s craving. The Cuban is a fun and lively joint less than five minutes away. As its name implies, the restaurant offers delicious Cuban food for affordable prices. Plus, it features a kids’ menu and the La Familia Sample, an assortment of dishes that serves six people. Grand Luxe Café is another popular option nearby that has an array of lunch specials on its menu for the family to choose from, including soup-and-salad or pasta-and-salad options. We’re also loving Tocolo Cantina , with locations in nearby Garden City and Glen Cove. The menu is packed with twists on traditional favorites, plus a kids’ menu that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters. Pro tip: order their birria tacos and save room for dessert. Their churro sundae is incredible (and will easily feed the whole family).

Post-lunch, head to Nassau County Coliseum should you be lucky enough to be in town when it is hosting an event. Popular in the early summer season is the Empire State Fair,  which features everything from rides and attractions to a petting zoo, circus, and even the brand-new (as of 2024) Pirates of the Caribbean Thrill Show. Other events range from concerts to family-friendly performances and showcases. Make sure to check the site for upcoming events!

If you don’t happen to luck out and time your visit in conjunction with one of these events, you can head on over to Eisenhower Park , a sprawling space even bigger than Central Park. In addition to its wide-open green space, the park is also home to picnic areas, athletic fields and courts, playgrounds, fitness trails, and even swimming facilities and a golf course (mini golf, too!). Both kids and adults will have a blast here, with a splash park, batting cages, bocce ball, and checkers for the littles, and cricket, ice skating, outdoor theater, and chess for the older crowd.

If you’d rather take advantage of Nassau County’s proximity to the water, head to Freeport’s Nautical Mile . In addition to shopping, ice cream, and exploring the area, families can hop aboard a cruise from the port and take in the sunset, watch for whales, or simply enjoy the views from the water. Equally as engaging is a visit to the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium , located less than 30 minutes from LICM. Not only does it house a public aquarium home to the biggest living collection of the state’s freshwater reptiles, amphibians, and fish, but it also houses a hatchery where kids can feed trout, do some hands-on fishing, and explore the property’s outdoor ponds. Plus, it hosts special events such as turtle hatching that will make your kiddos go googly-eyed.

Nassau County Family-Friendly Day Trips for the Tweens and Teens!

For families with tweens and teens in tow, there are plenty of exciting activities to enjoy beyond shopping — which is a must, must, must while you’re here. Here’s a suggested itinerary that incorporates shopping, beach time, and amazing food options:

If you plan on treating the kids to a souvenir or two from your time on Long Island, hit up Americana . This luxury shopping destination is open-air and home to big names like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Fendi, and St. John. For your tweens and teens, swing through their faves—Sephora, Lululemon, Madewell, Nike, and more. Be sure to check out Kith and grab a scoop of Kith Treats ice cream while you peruse the shelves. Pop inside Blue Mercury to stock up on everyone’s favorite makeup brands and beauty products, or grab a cup of joe at Ralph’s Coffee . Youngs Farm Cafe is another favorite for much-needed sustenance — a small bakery and marketplace that sells cookies, pies, coffees, teas, and select grocery items, much of which is sourced from local farms and makers.

Long Beach, New York, offers plenty of activities for teens to enjoy on the beach after a morning of shopping. The most obvious option is to take advantage of the beautiful sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, where families can swim, surf, or sun to their hearts’ content. Lifeguards are typically on duty during the summer months to ensure safety. Long Beach is known for its top-notch surfing conditions, particularly at Lincoln Boulevard Beach and National Boulevard Beach. Additionally, teens new to the sport can rent surfboards or take lessons from local surf schools to ride the waves.

That’s not all there is to do on the beach, either. Many of the beaches on Long Beach have volleyball courts available for public use. Teens can gather friends for a game and enjoy friendly competition in the sun. In addition to volleyball, teens can also enjoy other beach sports like soccer, frisbee, or paddleball. Bring some sports equipment and organize a game with friends or join others on the beach.

Long Beach also boasts a boardwalk that stretches for miles along the beachfront, providing the perfect setting for teens to skateboard or bike. The boardwalk offers scenic ocean views and is a popular spot for outdoor recreation. During the summer months, stay on top of the ongoing events and festivals on the beach. You’ll find concerts, movie nights, farmers markets, and beach parties on the local event calendar .

And if your teens still have energy for dinner, treat the family to a hearty meal at a trendy restaurant nearby. While the many concession stands and food carts along the boardwalk will keep you from reaching peak hunger, there’s nothing like tucking into a full meal. Consider local favorites known for their atmosphere, stunning ocean views, and delicious food.

Here are a few suggestions:

Shine’s Seafood & Raw Bar is a local favorite for its fresh seafood dishes and laid-back atmosphere. It is located near the beach and offers a diverse menu, from oysters and clams to lobster rolls and fish tacos. Their outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying the ocean breeze while indulging in delicious seafood. It is the oldest bar on the beach, dating back to 1912. For something slightly more elevated, head to Lost and Found , a rustic New American restaurant that customers often hail as the best on Long Island. Enjoy everything from steak frites and seared scallops to octopus and mussels. Five Ocean is another hot spot nearby with a tantalizing cocktail menu, tons of Mediterranean-inspired entrees, and plenty of seafood. If casual is more your calling, you can stroll into Billy’s Beach Cafe , famous for its sought-after wings and elevated bar fare. The Atlantica , Allegria Hotel’s signature restaurant, is an elegant spot for a delicious breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Here, you’ll find top-tier seafood and gourmet plates, and a robust offering of wines, local beers, and cocktails. End the day with a relaxing evening stroll along the Long Beach Boardwalk. Teens can enjoy the ocean views, grab some ice cream or snacks from one of the boardwalk vendors, and unwind after a day of excitement, and so can you!

Looking Down the Jones Beach Boardwalk with the Suns Rays Shining Down at Jones Beach State Park, Long Island, New York

Long Island is a place of intriguing opposites. From the rolling green hills and white sand beaches to the colonial charm and modern sensibilities, Nassau County is the perfect serene escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Long Island isn’t just a retreat for the rich and famous (although it is home to the mansions that collectively inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”), but it has become a destination for those seeking an elegant seaside getaway, cultural events, historic places, and so much more.

If you’re planning an excursion to Nassau County on Long Island, get tips on five fun senior-friendly day trip destinations to explore.

How to Get Around Long Island

Nassau county, new york, includes much of the western part of the island and borders queens to the west and suffolk county to the east..

If you’re driving, several bridges and tunnels connect New York City to the rest of Long Island. And once you’re there, rail service, taxis, and buses are available to help you navigate. Learn more and find maps on the official Long Island tourism website .

old-westbury-gardens-nassau-county-ny-blog-image

Experience one of Long Island’s opulent mansions at Old Westbury Gardens . John S. Phipps built this home for his fiancée in 1906, modeled on architecture from the English Caroline era. This sprawling 200-acre estate is now open to the public and features manicured grounds, forests, ponds, and a home full of fascinating antiques.

Seniors receive discounted admission to the gardens and Westbury House. Self-guided and docent-led tours are included with admission. The guided tours take approximately 45 minutes.

It’s important to note that parts of the house may pose a challenge for individuals with limited mobility, and there are also unpaved and gravel walkways through some areas of the gardens. You may want to consider opting for the self-guided tour to set your own pace if you are concerned about navigating these spaces.

Discover what life was like on Long Island in the 1800s at Old Bethpage Village Restoration . You’ll find a collection of over 50 historic homes, structures, and buildings, as well as thousands of artifacts originally from around the island.

Visit and learn about the school, blacksmith shop, doctor’s office, church, and more. Old Bethpage Village Restoration hosts numerous special events like an old-fashioned baseball game, Halloween celebrations, and candlelight evenings.

Due to the large number of sites to visit, feel free to explore at your leisure. However, make sure to watch your step as the village roads and floors within the buildings are similar to what you’d expect from the 19th century.

Adventuring in Tupper Lake

The Adirondacks  have long been a summer playland for people of all walks of life, from the uber-wealthy barons of the Golden Age to middle class suburbanites. Take part in the splendor of New York's great wilderness with a visit to  The Wild Center, where the Wild Walk  gives visitors a bird's-eye view of the Adirondack Park. (No, really, there's even a bird's nest you can relax in!). You can also explore the Park by rail, kind of:  The Rail Explorers pedal powered rail bikes  make use of forgotten waterside train tracks for a unique experience that lasts about an hour. (Children under 16 need adult accompaniment.) Looking for something a little more fast-paced? Head over to nearby Lake Placid and see if you can reach top speeds with the  Summer Bobsled Experience . Who knows, maybe a future Olympics will be in your future.

The Wild Center Address:  45 Museum Drive, Tupper Lake, NY 12986

The Rail Explorers Address:  121 Park Street, Tupper Lake, NY 12986

Strong National Museum of Play

With a name like " National Museum of Play ," could you doubt that will fun will be had? This museum is all about having a good time, and activities like the Bristol Mountain Aerial Adventure Mobile Park gives visitors (ages 4-14) the chance to test skills of balance, climbing, and endurance. Or teach the kids how to  really  use their thumbs — not on a tablet or other gadget, but the way you used to, on a  pinball machine . From the aquarium to the robot exhibit, the whole family will be entertained by a day trip to Rochester and this museum.

Visit a Farm

New York State is a leader in agricultural production, but we all know why we love our rural landscapes: Those adorable baby animals! Several petting zoos and farm sanctuaries around Upstate New York welcome visitors to come and connect with nature in the form of a squishy sheep or a playful goat. Old McDonald's Farm is a working dairy and crop farm that encourages guests to play with farm animals and enjoy hay and pony rides (looking for a quick, cheap bite to eat in the area?  Try this list ) and Farm Sanctuary, near Watkins Glen, has hundreds of rescued farm animals, all with a unique story.

Carousel Tour

Broome County has one very distinct feature that sets it apart from the rest of the state: It is home to a mass of carousels generously gifted to the people of the county by George F. Johnson, president of the Endicott Johnson Corporation. Six carousels — most are on the National Register of Historic Places — are dotted throughout the county at West Endicott Park, George W. Johnson Park, Highland Park, Ross Park, George F. Johnson Recreation Park, and C. Fred Johnson Recreation Park. Create a passport for your family and indulge in a special dinner after you've ridden every carousel on this list .

Lockport Caves and Boat Tours

For this next day trip, go deep. Deep underground that is. The Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride, on the Erie Canal, is a half-hour drive from Niagara Falls and takes you to the underground caves and locks created by the canal system. The tour lasts just over an hour and features both man-made and geological wonders that are sure to astound. Bonus challenge: See how many words you can remember to the  Erie Canal song  on your drive there.

A day in Lake George

Lake George  is a four-season destination for the family, but summer is the best time to get out and really explore. Start on Canada Street, where a few arcades invite families to try their hand at old-school Skee ball or more modern computer-generated games. From there, work your way to one of the many mini golf courses (we're partial to  Around The World  for its kitschy vibe) where you can come up with fun rewards for the winner (whoever wins gets out of dishwashing duty that week, for example). Zip across the street to  Million Dollar Beach , so-named for its astounding views and white sandy beach, and wind down the day there.

Nestled into the rolling Hudson Valley  farmland in the town of Ghent, Art Omi is a 60-acre sculpture park that features fixed and rotating exhibits. Like crops springing up from garden soil, some of the sculptures (which kids are welcome to climb and play on, in most instances) seem as though they grew right out of the ground. There is plenty of space for kids to run and play while parents get to take in a bit of culture. A cafe serves cold drinks and locally-sourced sandwiches, soups, and baked goods, or stop at  Golden Harvest farmstand  on your way by and grab doughnuts, cider, and maybe a bottle of  Harvest Spirits brand liquor , made on-site, to enjoy after the kids are in bed. Olana State Historic Site , Thoman Cole National Historic Site (both part of the  Hudson River School of Art ) and the  Martin Van Buren House  are all nearby to extend your day.

Old-Time Baseball

Baseball is America's game, and it really isn't summer unless you've taken in a few innings. Why not go back to the beginnings and see baseball as it was once played? Known then as base ball (two words!), players at Genesee Country Village and Museum don vintage wool uniforms and wooden bats, minus gloves and protective equipment. The National Silver Ball Tournament is played here, scheduled for August 12-14 this year. Access to games is permitted with purchase of a museum pass .

Enchanted Forest Water Safari

A day in Old Forge

Old Forge  feels like a distant relic of what New York State used to be: Everything moves a little slower in Old Forge, and the best parts of the town are untouched to maintain their vintage charms. Start the day with a big breakfast at  Keyes Pancake House  before heading to  Enchanted Forest Water Safari . Here, you can relive your own childhood memories while making new ones with your children, especially on the historic rides, electric train, and storybook village. Once breakfast has settled, don your swimsuits and embrace the summer-smell of chlorine with the many water slides and amusements. Dry off, then cap your day in Old Forge at the famous hardware store . Pick up a memento to remember your trip by (the bear bumper stickers are a hit) and a box of legendary fudge to enjoy on your way home.

Man charged with killing 4 university students in Idaho is jailed in Boise after his trial is moved

The man accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students has been booked into jail in Boise, where his trial was moved last week, Ada County records showed on Sunday.

Idaho's Supreme Court on Thursday moved the trial of Bryan Kohberger after his defense attorneys argued that extensive media coverage and strong emotions in the community of Moscow, Idaho, where the killings occurred, would make it difficult to find an impartial jury.

Kohberger is charged with four counts of murder in the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, who were killed in the early morning of Nov. 13, 2022.

When asked to enter a plea last year, Kohberger stood silent, prompting a judge to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf.

The new trial venue in Boise is about 300 miles (483 kilometers) from Moscow. Prosecutors unsuccessfully argued they could find impartial jurors in Moscow by bringing in a large pool to choose from. They also said the move inconveniences the family members of victims, attorneys, and witnesses.

Officials have said that Kohberger traveled in the region the night of the killings, that his DNA was found at the crime scene, and that surveillance video and cellphone data shows Kohberger visiting the area at least a dozen times before the killings.

Kohberger's attorneys said in court filings that he was just out for a drive that night, which he often does to hike, run or look at the moon and stars.

Prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty if Kohberger is convicted. The trial is set for June 2025.

The 7 Best Day Trips From Nassau, Bahamas

day trips nassau county

Courtesy of Bahamas Ministry of Tourism

As the capital of the Bahamas , Nassau is undoubtedly the most convenient location to call home when visiting the island nation. But don't think of yourself as landlocked in New Providence for the duration of your stay. Swimming with pigs may be all the rage nowadays, but there are a variety of lesser-known excursions to experience on a day trip to the outer islands. Whether it's a jeep tour in Freeport or a nature walk in the wilderness of Cat Island, here are the best day trips for your next vacation in the Bahamas. Read on and prepare for your next Bahamian adventure.

Harbour Island

You may recognize this destination as the ritzy locale for the opening scene of "China Rich Girlfriend"—the sequel to the novel "Crazy Rich Asians." Take a day trip to 'Briland'—as locals and regular visitors alike call it—and explore the coral coastline of this infinitely Instagram-worthy island. Go ahead, and see how the other half lives. Best of all? Aside from the transportation cost, such world-class sunbathing remains blissfully free of charge.

Getting there: Book a reservation via Bahamas Ferries for the 2-hour and 45-minute boat ride from Nassau to Harbour Island.

Travel Tip: Make a reservation at Sip Sip , the original outpost of the iconic Bahamian culinary establishment (which recently opened another location on Paradise Island.)

Trade coral sand beaches for neon pink wildlife on Inagua Island, the southernmost island in the entire Bahamian archipelago. Harbour Island may be world-renowned for its people-watching, but Inagua is better known for its feathered inhabitants. Great Inagua is the birding capital of the Bahamas. Almost half of the island is preserved by Inagua National Park , creating a haven for flamingoes, pelicans, and the native Bahama parrot. The third-largest island in the Bahamas, Great Inagua Island is also home to the nation's largest bird sanctuary. Wildlife-aficionados should beeline straight to Great Inagua Island once they arrive for the day.

Getting There: Book a Bahamasair flight from Nassau to Matthew Town, Inagua for the fastest arrival time.

Travel Tips: Be sure to check out the flock of West Indian Flamingos at the National Park on Great Inagua Island, which is home to over 80,000 members of the species.

Despite what the name suggests, Cat Island is not a haven for creatures of the feline persuasion. Instead this lesser-populated island is the perfect place for some quiet alone time. Nassau is rightfully celebrated for its cosmopolitan charms, but that's all the more reason to treat yourself to a peaceful moment of solitude on vacation.

Getting There: Book a flight from Nassau to Arthurs Town, Cat Island, via Pineappleair.

Travel Tips: Walk the one highway down this largely-undiscovered island and appreciate the Bahamian homes intermingled with ancient ruins dotting the side of the road.

Thanks to its nautical distance from nearby Nassau, the Bahamian island of Bimini is a veritable haven for thrill-seekers and wilderness-lovers. Ernest Hemingway was even known to be an avid sportsman while living on the island, though we suggest trading in the marlin fishing for swimming with sharks.

Getting There: Book a Bahamasair flight from Nassau to Bimini.

Travel Tips: We recommend Bimini Scuba Center for all of your shark-centered needs when on the island. For the truly adventurous, the Tiger Shark off-island expedition will be held this coming May through July. Better start working up to that confidence now.

Spanish Wells

For travelers really looking to get off the beaten path, look no further than Spanish Wells, a tiny town in St. George’s Cay. Though the area is nearby to Harbour Island in Eleuthera, the two destinations could not feel further apart in ambiance. Book a Harbour Safari in Spanish Wells to enjoy the company swimming pigs that are far less overexposed (and overly-excitable) than their cousins, who are busy frolicking with Instagram influencers on an island nearby.

Getting There: Book a reservation via Bahamas Ferries for the 2-hour and 10-minute boat ride from Nassau to Spanish Wells.

Travel Tips: Take advantage of the remoteness of your destination with a sandbar lunch, and a cruise by the famous Glass Window Bridge, which connects the Northern and Southern parts of Eleuthera.

There's no better way to see the picturesque island of Freeport than on a jeep tour. The narrow, sandy roads along the island is reminiscent of the winding seaside highways of the Florida Keys. Though cruising in a four-wheel-drive may seem less exciting than swimming with sharks, the comfort level is markedly higher—and the anxiety level far lower.

Getting There: Book a 30-minute flight from Nassau to Rock Sound, Governor’s Harbour or North Eleuthera Airport via either Southern Air , Bahamasair , or Pineappleair.

Travel Tips: The Bahamas Jeep Safari tours are approximately 5 hours in length and provide the perfect opportunity to explore the island on your day trip.

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

No list of Bahamian day trips would be complete without the Exuma Cays on it. The activities included in the day trips up until now may not be as omnipresent on your Instagram feed, but they are no less exhilarating—offering a taste of life in the so-called “family islands” of the Bahamian archipelago. But if you’re looking for an excursion that’s sure to be a crowd-favorite, look no further than these legendarily aquatic pigs. Just be careful when swimming with them; they are wild pigs and will bite!

Getting there: Fly from Nassau to Staniel Cay in the Exumas via Bahamas Air Tour. You can also book a 40-minute flight from Nassau to George Town in Exuma via Bahamasair .

Travel Tip: If you’re looking for an immersive experience, make it a full-day adventure by booking a boat ride via Powerboat Adventures from Nassau to Exuma.

alt

A hot spot of summer activities and tourism, visiting Stanley during the Idaho autumn allows for a quieter adventure among the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains. Hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing are all made a little more exciting with the arrival of stunning fall colors across the paradise that is the Sawtooth Valley.

2. City of Rocks National Reserve

alt

Almo, Idaho is immersed in vivid shades of autumn as the temperatures start to cool from summer. A great way to experience this fall beauty for yourself is by taking on the City of Rocks Backcountry Byway. Taking you past the neighboring parks of City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park, you'll be treated to amazing fall scenery combined with the towering monoliths of these unique parks.

3. Sandpoint

alt

Autumn is a spectacular time to visit the beautiful North Idaho city of Sandpoint . Located along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, visitors can enjoy all of the same activities of summer with a brilliant backdrop of fall scenery. With campgrounds and trails less crowded, you can enjoy this lakeside oasis all to yourself.

alt

Considering Boise's most popular nickname is "The City of Trees," you can bet the fall scenery is simply magical in Idaho's capital city . Summer may be over, but this city is livelier than ever with an abundance of fall festivities, outdoor recreation, football games, corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and so much more.

5. The Palouse

alt

One of Idaho's most stunning natural wonders, the Palouse region consists of gorgeous rolling farmland that seems to go on forever. In the spring and summer, the landscape is lush and green. In fall, the Palouse transforms into endless fields of gold. It's not the type of fall scenery that first comes to mind when you think of fall in Idaho, but it's absolutely breathtaking.

6. The Boise River

alt

We know Boise is already featured on the list, but the Boise River deserves an entry all of its own. After all, there's no better time to take advantage of this prime fly-fishing destination. Lined with deciduous trees, fall at the Boise River is a spectacular sight as the leaves change colors. Flowing right through Idaho's largest metropolitan area, this river is like an autumnal oasis in our own backyard.

7. Sun Valley

alt

There's something extraordinary about fall in the Sun Valley area . Whether it's the vibrant scenery or the feeling of the crisp mountain air, this beautiful mountain town somehow becomes even more incredible in the fall season. Plan a visit to enjoy the town's fall festivities, fly fishing, and dining and nightlife.

8. Palisades Reservoir

alt

Straddling the Idaho-Wyoming border, Palisades Reservoir is a scenic body of water that is best known for its fishing opportunities. During fall in Idaho, you can experience some of the state's most majestic fall foliage with a drive around the reservoir. With colorful mountains on one side and the reservoir on the other, you'll be completely immersed in the area's fall beauty. This is one of the best places to visit in Idaho during fall.

9. Shoshone Falls

alt

Autumn is typically a low time for the brilliant Shoshone Falls in Twin Falls, Idaho. If you want to see a healthy flow, we recommend visiting in spring or early summer. However, this waterfall still has plenty to offer as the cascade slows to a trickle. Fall's beauty transforms the Snake River Canyon, and the cooler temperatures are ideal for exploring this eye-popping landscape!

10. Swan Valley

alt

Located near the East Idaho community of Swan Valley , the South Fork of the Snake River becomes totally surrounded by vibrant fall foliage during this time of year. We recommend seeking out the incredible Fall Creek Falls , a waterfall on the banks of the river that offers visitors an extraordinary sight in autumn.

Idaho is a gorgeous state, but sometimes planning your next adventure can be a little daunting - there are so many choices! We've compiled some of the most beautiful day trips in Idaho, from beloved destinations and scenic road trips for the whole family to a few gorgeous outings you perhaps have never thought of. While any of these can be done of the course of one day, to make the most of the journey, we definitely recommend venturing out on a three-day weekend if you can! Start creating a lifetime of memories by taking one (or more) of these unforgettable Idaho day trips:

1. Explore the City of Rocks National Reserve.

alt

Beautiful, unique, and perfectly situated to be easily explored by nearly every Southern Idaho local, City of Rocks is definitely a bucket list worthy day trip. This geologic wonderland is not only a historic, rocky playground for all ages, it's also surprisingly idyllic in every season. Spring is especially rewarding for the nature lover, and visitors will be treated to small streams and creeks bubbling up from hidden nooks and crannies. And if one day isn't quite long enough (hint: it won't be!), camping is available as well. The best part is this fantastic area is gorgeous no matter the season!

2. Spend the day wining and dining at a local vineyard.

alt

Idaho has no shortage of picture-perfect vineyards that produce delicious wines, most of which can be found in the Southern half of the state. But there's something to be said for spending the day enjoying fabulous food, sampling new creations, and enjoying great company! Colter's Creek Vineyard and Winery in Juliatta (pictured) is one of many family-run, sustainable options around the state that offers tours and special events, and they even have a tasting room right in Moscow. But if you want to make an even longer trip of exploring Idaho's vineyards, this wine tour is the perfect way to (safely) indulge while enjoying Idaho's bounty.

3. Visit the magical Thomas E. Ricks Gardens in Rexburg.

alt

Sometimes, the best places to enjoy are the simplest! How about a special day out at a lush, colorful botanical garden? While the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens at BYU-Idaho aren't traditional by any means, they sure are stunning! Ten breathtaking acres of fountains, ponds, waterfalls, pavilions, and charming flower beds - all in one place. This is another perfect addition to your Idaho bucket list.

4. Take a day trip to a forgotten ghost town (or three) within Land of the Yankee Fork State Park.

alt

Because why not? This cluster of ghost towns (Custer, Bayhorse, and Bonanza) makes up one of Idaho's newest (and yet oldest) state parks, with plenty of historical remnants and scenic mountain hikes to delight the average traveler. If you've ever wanted to explore Idaho's ghost towns, this is the perfect place to start! Land of the Yankee Fork State Park is a (literal) gold mine for anyone who loves Idaho history.

5. Hike to the forgotten city of Boulder City and its secret lakes.

alt

Speaking of ghost towns...A lost city, an abandoned mine, a rugged trail , and endless beauty combine just outside of Sun Valley for an unforgettable trip into Idaho's beautiful Boulder Mountains. The pinnacle lakes here - while a challenge to reach - are well worth the determination.

6. Drive the breathtaking Salmon River Scenic Byway.

alt

Few things kick off a fantastic weekend quite like a road trip, and this 161-mile journey through Central Idaho is one of the state's finest. Incredible history, stunning natural beauty, wilderness adventure, and some of the wildest landscapes Idaho has to offer all collide in this truly magnificent journey - complete with off-road options and hot springs galore. If you live in the area, you can drive the Salmon River Scenic Byway in one day, although you'll have a hard time not stopping every few minutes to enjoy the views!

7. Immerse yourself in nature at the biggest natural spring in Idaho.

alt

While the quaint, snow-covered sight of Johnny Sack's historic cabin is a must-see across the water in winter, the dense trees and bounty of natural beauty surrounding Big Springs in Island Park is absolutely divine in every season. Multiple hiking paths will carry you into the lush trees, and the end reward - the crisp sight of the blue-green water of Big Springs itself - is incredibly rejuvenating. Keep your eyes peeled for moose!

8. Kick off your boots in Idaho City.

alt

Of all the Wild West towns dotting the state, Idaho City is an absolute gem. Charming, welcoming, resilient, and full of rugged, historic beauty, there's something new to discover and learn around every corner! Dress up in saloon garb and reenact a saloon scene for the camera. Camp in a yurt. Explore the historic remnants of decades past. Take an auto tour of the Ponderosa Pine scenic byway. Hot spring it up au naturale or in luxury. Go for a hike. Grab some pie and finger steaks...take your pick! You won't regret it.

9. Spend the day exploring the Center of the Universe.

alt

There's a lot to love about the most unique small town in Idaho, and Wallace's Center of the Universe manhole cover plaque is just the start of everything you'll find here. Dozens of woodsy trails, endless quaint museums, ziplining, and even historical tours barely scratch the surface of this larger-than-life community. One day might not be enough!

15 Best Things to Do in Moscow (Idaho)

In a landscape of fertile rolling hills on the Idaho-Washington boundary, Moscow is the county seat of Latah County and the home of the University of Idaho, founded in the early 1890s.

The city has a cozy downtown with historic brick buildings from the turn of the 20th century and lots of community events, like a weekly farmers’ market spring through fall, and a bustling artwalk in June.

As you would expect, the University of Idaho plays an important role in the city’s cultural, social and sporting life, and many of the attractions in this list are connected to this institution in some way.

The surrounding Palouse landscape of rambling hills decked with wheat fields, can be explored on two paved rail trails, heading out east and west of the city.

1. University of Idaho Arboretum & Botanical Garden

University of Idaho Arboretum & Botanical Garden

The loveliest feature of the university campus’ verdant grounds is the UI Arboretum & Botanical Garden.

You’ll find it in 63 acres, just south of the President’s Residence and the university’s golf course, with undulating Palouse hills in the background.

Open to the public with free admission, the arboretum was laid out on a former hayfield in the early-1980s, although its origins go back way before, to the early 20th century.

In fact you can check out the site of the first arboretum, planted in the 1910s with majestic specimen trees, including a giant sequoia, on the north side of the President’s Residence.

As for the “new” arboretum, this counts more than 17,000 plants from over 2,400 taxa, mostly organized into geographical regions, including Europe, Asia and Eastern and Western North America.

On the south end are exquisite display gardens for xerophytes, ornamental willows, irises and heather, as well as a butterfly garden, magical in summer.

2. Latah Trail

Latah Trail

Twelve miles long, this paved trail will take you east from Moscow all the way to the neighboring city of Troy.

The Latah Trail was completed in 2008 and is on the course of a dismantled BNSF railroad line that junctioned at Arrow, some 30 miles to the southeast.

The path is ten feet wide, allowing plenty of space for walkers and cyclists in summer, and snowshoers and cross-country skiers after snowfall in winter.

As this is a rail trail there are no difficult slopes but you’ll be guaranteed breathtaking panoramas of the Palouse, with tilled slopes interspersed with sweeps of coniferous forest.

In Moscow the Latah Trail merges seamlessly with the Paradise Path, in turn connecting with the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail, which we’ll talk about below.

3. Appaloosa Museum and Heritage Center

Appaloosa Museum and Heritage Center

The Appaloosa, identified by its colorful spotted coat, is a horse breed synonymous with the Palouse region, so it’s fitting that there should be a museum for it, right on the Idaho-Washington state line.

The museum shines a light on a variety of topics, like the history of spotted horses in art and literature, Appaloosas’ various coat patterns, and the importance of Appaloosas to the native Nez Perce people.

Display cases are loaded with interesting objects, from saddles to black and white photography and Native American artifacts. There’s also a hands-on area to keep children engaged, as well as a theater and an extensive library.

4. Moscow Farmers’ Market

Moscow Farmers' Market

Taking place on Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm, May through October, Moscow Farmers’ Market is now well into its fifth decade.

Right on Main Street, this is a celebration of the Moscow area’s farmers, artisans and musicians, giving them an opportunity to connect with the city’s residents and visitors.

For shoppers interested in food provenance the market is a chance to find out where your produce comes from and pick up tips about storage and preparation.

There’s a wide range of vendors for vegetables, fruit, plants, flowers, local grass-fed meat, pastries, honey, jams, cosmetics, home decorations, hand-forged knives and much more.

The market has live music most weeks, as well as freshly prepared food, from tacos to samosas.

5. Bill Chipman Palouse Trail

Bill Chipman Palouse Trail

Following the right of way of the old Union Pacific Railroad, the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail runs west from Moscow, crossing the state line and taking you to Pullman, Washington.

Pullman is the home of the flagship campus for Washington State University, the second-largest institution of higher education in the state.

Seven miles long, the trail, paved all the way, carries you through bucolic Palouse scenery, parallel to State Route 270.

There’s a shallow gradient, and you’ll come across rest areas and interpretive signs along the route. And while the landscapes are gorgeous, the trail also has an important practical use as a commuter route for cyclists between the two university campuses.

6. Prichard Art Gallery

Prichard Art Gallery

This outreach facility for the University of Idaho is located in downtown Moscow, and moved to its current location on Main Street in 1986.

The Prichard Art Gallery has a lively schedule of exhibitions, events and educational programming, receiving upwards of 17,000 visitors a year.

You can check out the creativity of members of the Idaho College of Art and Architecture, as well as temporary exhibits for local, regional, national and international artists in a whole spectrum of media.

The exhibits rotate at short intervals, so there’s always something fresh to see, while the gift shop sells unique pieces by artists and craftspeople from the area.

7. McConnell Mansion

McConnell Mansion

On leafy Adams Street, a couple of blocks east of Main Street, stands the palatial W. J. McConnell House.

In a Stick/Eastlake style, this elegant residence was built in 1886 for William J. McConnell (1839-1925), who served as Governor of Idaho from 1893 to 1897, after previously representing the young state as one of its first United States Senators.

The mansion is the headquarters of the Latah County Historical Society, and you can take a look around a series of themed period rooms, featuring authentic furnishings and appliances.

The society also puts on fascinating exhibits and learning events, often in partnership with the University of Idaho and always well worth attending.

8. Colter’s Creek Winery

Colter's Creek Winery

The rolling country south of Moscow has everything you need to make great wine, and in 2016 the Lewis-Clark Valley gained official AVA (American Viticultural Area) designation.

Colter’s Creek has a storefront and tasting room in Moscow, growing its grapes on the sunny slopes where the Potlatch flows into the Clearwater River.

Planted between the 1980s and 2010s these vineyards produce a wide variety of grapes, running the gamut from Riesling to Cabernet Sauvignon, for local handcrafted wines that have earned widespread acclaim.

The stylish Moscow tasting room is in Main Street’s Hattabaugh building, constructed in 1890, and has a choice of estate wines on tap. Wine tasting classes take place regularly, to help you tell a Sangiovese from a Tempranillo.

9. Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre

Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre

On the National Register of Historic Places, this fine old Spanish Revival cinema has a history going back to 1926, and was founded as a vaudeville stage and silent movie house.

The current tiled facade, in a pared-down Art Deco style, has been in place since 1949, and up to the late-1980s this was downtown Moscow’s main movie theater.

Since 2000, the venue has belonged to the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre, which carried out thorough renovations in the 2010s. Come for classic, independent and foreign films, as well as a variety of community stage performances and other events.

10. Hamilton-Lowe Aquatics Center

Waterslide

Summers in Moscow wouldn’t be the same without this public outdoor pool, splash pad and water park, open June through September.

If you want to get your laps in, the Hamilton-Lowe Aquatics Center has a 25-yard, six-lane pool.

Meanwhile parents can bring children to the extensive play area, which features a toddler-friendly slide, tumble buckets, interactive equipment, slides for bigger kids and a small lazy river.

The center also has picnic tables, barbecues, lounge chairs and free Wi-Fi, as well as a full-service concession area, though you’re free to bring your own food.

11. Idaho Vandals

Kibbie Dome

The 16,000-seater multipurpose arena, Kibbie Dome is home field for several of the University of Idaho’s sports teams, all called the Idaho Vandals.

So depending on the time of year you can catch pulsating football, basketball (men and women), soccer (women), tennis and indoor track and field at this venue.

The Kibbie Dome was completed in 1971 as an open-air stadium, and was given its barrel-vaulted roof in 1975.

The football team competes in the Big Sky Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), returning in 2016 after 20 years bouncing around the Big West, Sun Belt and Western Athletic Conferences.

The Vandals’ golden age came between 1985 and 1995 when it reached the I-AA playoffs in ten out of 11 seasons.

If you’re wondering about the name, “Vandals”, it goes back more than a century, when UI’s feared basketball team played defense with such ferocity that they were dubbed the Vandals by the famous coach Hec Edmundson (1886-1964).

12. Ghormley Park

Ghormley Park

Bordered on the south side by Paradise Creek, Ghormley Park is the favorite destination for family fun and outdoor recreation in summer.

The park covers just over ten acres, a large section of which is in the shade of tall, mature trees.

This is where you’ll find the picnic shelter, fitted with BBQ grills, as well as a children’s playground.

Elsewhere there are amenities for baseball/softball, basketball and horseshoes. You can use the Paradise Trail, which traces the creek and connects a number of green spaces in Moscow, to get onto the Latah Trail on the east side of the city and the Bill Chipman Trail in the west.

13. Palouse Ice Rink

Ice Skating

You can hit the ice at this popular local rink on the southeast side of town. Resembling an aircraft hangar, the Palouse Ice Rink has a temporary look about it, and when we wrote this article was making strides raising money for a permanent complex.

There are regular public skate sessions early in the day, after school and in the evening, and skate rental is reasonably priced.

Also on the schedule are casual stick-n-puck sessions, pick-up hockey, drop-in late-night curling, league curling, Palouse Adult League Hockey and much more. Check the calendar for learn-to-skate sessions.

14. Moscow Artwalk

Street Performers

Beginning back in 2004, the Moscow Artwalk is a landmark on the Palouse calendar. On one Friday evening in June, more than 60 businesses and 100 artists around downtown participate in a vibrant cultural and artistic event.

Moscow Artwalk brings exhibitions of a wide variety, as well as live demonstrations by artists, workshops, live music, dance performances and food vendors, on Main Street and its intersecting streets.

You can take in this cultural feast on a self-guided trail, and there’s a passport system, with six stamps making you eligible for a prize draw. And if you miss something, many of the participating businesses also have Saturday hours.

15. Fondo on the Palouse

Fondo on the Palouse

The foundation responsible for the Latah Trail organizes this cycling event, normally staged on the last Saturday in June.

Fondo on the Palouse takes you out into the beautiful rolling Palouse landscape on a variety of group bike rides, all setting off from Moscow.

The Family Fondo is a 15-mile route from Moscow to Troy. If you want something longer but want to stay away from road traffic, there’s a 50-mile ride along the Latah and Bill Chipman Palouse Trails.

And finally the grand Moscow Fondo is a 100-mile tour of the region, passing through Troy, Deary, Princeton and Potlatch, crossing the state line to Pullman and Colfax, WA, before returning to Moscow.
