19 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' (2018)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a critically acclaimed animated film that introduced the Marvel hero to the concept of the multiverse before it became mainstream. It follows the likable Miles Morales ( Shameik Moore ) as he attempts to juggle superhero responsibilities with schoolwork, a task that quickly gets more complex as he encounters other Spider-Man characters from all over the universe. Before it's too late, they have to work together to put a stop to the nefarious Kingpin and his "super collider."

The film's stunning visuals steal the show, overshadowing even its well-written characters in impact. It seems as if pages from a comic book have come to life in order to convey Miles' amazing experience thanks to the vivid colors and wild transitions that are used. It's an incredible animated movie that stands up remarkably well to more recent entries in the genre.

She quickly becomes a member of a team that is sent to a settlement of colonists on a planet that may be inhabited by extraterrestrial beings, and she is disheartened to discover that everyone around her appears to be underestimating the monsters.

The blockbuster is considered the best from the original trilogy and gives audiences some much-needed answers about Luke’s past and potential future. It also brings back the heroic Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and continues her arc alongside other fan favorites like Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca ( Peter Mayhew ).

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

7 'interstellar' (2014).

Interstellar is a must-see sci-fi film that’s set in a world suffering from the effects of the climate crisis. With blight threatening humanity’s survival, ex-NASA pilot Cooper ( Matthew McConaughey ) agrees to lead a risky trip through a wormhole that could lead to the species’ last hope for a new home. He never imagines what kind of dangers and wonders are on the other side.

Directed by Christopher Nolan , the movie has won numerous accolades and is widely regarded as a scientifically accurate adventure that (mostly) conforms to established physical laws. This accuracy makes Cooper’s journey even more exciting, knowing that the wild things viewers see could be possible somewhere in the known universe.

Interstellar

6 'the good, the bad and the ugly' (1966), imdb rating: 8.8/10.

Known as the ultimate spaghetti Western , director Sergio Leone ’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly follows the three titular characters and their relentless quest to find a buried cache of gold . Nothing will stop the men from locating and claiming their bounty, not even the chaos from the ongoing American Civil War.

The creative and sometimes campy adventure depicted in the film takes the three characters to some strange and violent places. The genre and director’s signature style is obvious through intense close-ups, long shots, and stylized gun fights, which build up throughout the movie all the way to its explosive conclusion.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

5 'the lord of the rings: the two towers' (2002).

Based on J. R. R. Tolkien 's renowned novels, director Peter Jackson's iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy depicts a fantastical sprawling world where magic, evil, and heroism combine, often from the most unexpected places . The second entry in the trilogy, The Two Towers , continues Frodo Baggins' dangerous journey to Mordor ( Elijah Wood ) alongside Samwise Gamgee ( Sean Astin ). On the other side, preparations for the Battle of Helm's Deep begin to sow doubt into Men's hearts, who have just been forced out of their homes.

It's impossible to call any of the three films in Jackson's trilogy bad, but The Two Towers is the weakest among them (at least based on IMDb scores). That said, it serves as a perfectly exhilarating bridge that continues the epic stories in exciting and tear-jerking ways.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

4 'inception' (2010).

Nolan’s Inception is often cited alongside some of the best sci-fi movies of all time and is rightly among IMDb's top adventure films. It follows a group of professional thieves led by Dom Cobb ( Leonardo DiCaprio ), who is an “extractor.” They go on a never-before-seen mission into a victim’s subconscious, not to steal information, but to plant an idea. Along the way, Cobb fails to let his team know that something from his past could complicate their already challenging mission.

An unprecedented adventure into the layers of the mind, Inception became a box office hit lauded by fans and critics alike for its stunning visual effects and novel concept. Its exciting sequences are set in large (often moving) set pieces that add to the fantastical and exhilarating atmosphere of the film.

3 'Dune: Part Two' (2024)

Following the successful premiere of 2021's Dune , it seemed to most that Frank Herbert 's notoriously unadaptable novels have found their match. Director Denis Villeneuve proves this with the recently released Dune: Part Two , which continues Paul Atreides' ( Timothée Chalamet ) journey further into the unforgiving deserts of the planet Arrakis, where he takes advantage of a prophecy to motivate the local population to fight.

Dune: Part Two is bigger, bolder, and better in every way, expanding on the already intriguing lore laid out by the first movie. It also introduces new characters and elements with ease, with the film benefitting from Villeneuve's direction in telling its tricky yet compelling story – not to mention its impeccably cast supporting characters. Fans and critics alike are hoping he can stick the landing with the potential final installment in the film series.

2 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' (2001)

Imdb rating: 8.9/10.

The widely beloved first movie in director Peter Jackson's legendary trilogy , The Fellowship of the Ring portrays the start of the perilous path the humble Hobbit Frodo Baggins (Wood) must take as the bearer of the One Ring . Alongside loyal friends, new allies, and a powerful wizard, the Fellowship is formed in Rivendell and pushes onward to face whatever may come their way.

The 2001 award-winning movie showcased the magical beauty of Middle-earth for the first time, building up anticipation for the sequels for years to come. Its far-reaching influence is still felt in the continuation of the saga today, though none can compare to the original trilogy that set a high standard for any future adaptation of Tolkien's work.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

1 'the lord of the rings: the return of the king' (2003), imdb rating: 9.0/10.

Director Peter Jackson’s final entry in the legendary The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King portrays the events in J. R. R. Tolkien’s eponymous 1955 novel. The renowned LotR film masterfully weaves the main storylines explored in the first two movies and delivers an epic conclusion that wraps up the trilogy in a satisfying way.

From the last leg of Frodo Baggins’ (Wood) journey to the heart of Mount Doom alongside Samwise Gamgee (Astin) and Gollum ( Andy Serkis ), to preparations for battles by well-loved characters like Gandalf ( Ian McKellen ), Aragorn ( Viggo Mortensen ), Legolas ( Orlando Bloom ), and Gimli ( John Rhys-Davies ), the film combines and completes the grand adventures and arcs that have enthralled and captivated audiences for years.

Every child should be introduced to Bunyan's classic — The Pilgrim's Progress . Dangerous Journey is that beautifully illustrated adventure story that shows children the basic themes of the Christian life and pilgrimage. The colorful characters and gripping situations make a vital and lasting impression. Use at home and in Bible school, children’s church, and Sunday school classes. Includes leader's guide/Scripture reference guide. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Fullscreen.

Editorial Reviews

Baptist bulletin, oct. 2005.

The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan became history's all-time best seller next to the Bible itself. Now we can be blessed by the story through this film version, based on Bunyan's classic. Although especially suited for children ages six and older, the recording can also be enjoyable and effective for adults. Both the graphics and narration are excellent. The 135-minute recording is divided into nine 15-minute segments, enabling the user to either view the whole story at once or use shorter sections as a series over a period of time, such as in a class setting. The recording comes with a leader's guide for parents and teachers and tells about John Bunyan and The Pilgrim's Progress. Then it summarizes each of the nine sections individually, with information on the main characters and major settings. Each section also includes a Scripture guide and a discussion guide. A hardback 126-page full-color storybook is also available from Vision Video.

Video Librarian, Nov./Dec. 2005

Dangerous Journey is an adaptation of John Bunyan's 17th-century classic The Pilgrim's Progress in an illustrated format designed for the religious education of youthful audiences. Told as a dream, it relates the story of Christian, who abandons home and family to flee from sin and destruction and travel the straight and narrow to the Celestial City. Along the way he encounters allegorical figures such as Faithful, Evangelist, and Hopeful, as well as Ignorance, the giant Despair, and the monster Apollyon, as he confronts a series of hardships and tests before arriving at his destination. Divided into nine segments (with recaps and previews, allowing for group discussion), Dangerous Journey nicely captures Bunyan's extremely visual writing style, with Alan Parry's enchanting illustrations backed by Paul Copley's beautiful narration, bringing fresh appeal to a classic that is admittedly difficult for modern audiences. Despite the caveat on the DVD jacket that the content might not be appropriate for very young children, I would advise parental discretion for those under 10, due to vivid portrayals of hellfire and grisly death that might no be palatable to all Christians (though kids who play video games such as Doom are likely to consider this pretty tame). As a seminal work of English literature, this is actually more appropriate for general collections, than for young people's religious studies. Highly recommended.

School LIbrary Journal

Dangerous Journey is based on John Bunyan's 1676 classic, The Pilgrim's Progress, an allegory of the Christian's road to heaven. The story is divided into nine 15-minute segments taken from the main event in the original book. The video is animated with watercolor and ink paintings, and set in pastoral 1600 England with the characters in period dress. A male narrator varies his voice for each character, and dramatic symphonic music fills the background. This introduction to the basic themes of the Christian life and pilgrimage for young children is suitable for church and Sunday school classes as well as for home use.

Gretchen - a great & dangerous journey.

We used this DVD as a movie night for nine different sessions in our Awana Club! The girls loved the movie and the discussions. I was unsure in the beginning but they seemed to be just as captivated by the narrator and the animation of the story. Were able to use their imaginations further and really get into the journey that Christian made to the Celestial City.

Caroline Hernasy - Captivating

My boys, ages six and eight truly love this book and they loved watching the video too. I read one chapter a day and they always plead with me to read the next chapter. But I don't because it keeps them interested for the next day. We use the study guide but I don't read the overview to them. To me that would tell most of the story before I read it. At first the content and pictures may seem scary, and to a degree they are, but my children experience the relief when a good man guides Christian or when Evangelist shows up. And that is the difference I want them to recognize. One of the best books and video we own.

Homeschooling6 - Children Enjoyed This

All six of my children really enjoy this movie and the book. Even my 5 year old will ask me to read the book to him over again. Blessings, Linda www.homeschooling6.com

Steve - Dangerous Journey Saved My Life

I watched this video several years ago, when I was quite depressed and had considered suicide. After encountering the part of the video where Christian escaped from Doubting Castle, after battling against suicide himself, at the Giant's suggestion, I realized where those thoughts were coming from in me. I too had a key of promise that released from my dungeon as certainly as it did Christian and Hopeful. I watch it every six months or so (more often when things are going ill with me) to keep me on the high road to Zion. Thanks for publishing such a life saver as Dangerous Journey.

Katherine Kenaston - Dangerous Journey

This is the best film of Pilgrim's Progress that I have ever seen. Though it's not animated the detail of the art and expertise of the camera throughout the filming render it breathtaking. I grew up with it and it captivates young and old alike. We liked it better than the animated one! Now I am getting it for my kids. I would give it 5 stars no questions.

10 great dangerous journey films

Peril lurks round every bend in these thrill-packed movies about treacherous trips.

25 September 2017

By  Stephen Puddicombe

dangerous journey movie

BFI Thriller, a season of films that get the pulse and mind racing, ran at BFI Southbank from October to December 2017.

Some of cinema’s most gripping moments occur when characters are embarking on a journey. Think of James Bond’s globetrotting, or the epic quests found in fantasy stories, or thrillers and action movies with exciting set pieces on cars, trains, boats and planes.

The act of travelling from A to B is an elemental aspect of much storytelling, but in film, an art form that captures images and bodies moving through space, the motion of the journey is the medium distilled to its purest form. That’s why the perils of journeying through dangerous spaces have a particularly visceral quality when experienced through the camera. We can recognise and directly relate to the risk of a rickety bridge, or of a high-speed vehicle perilously losing its balance.

Pure survival is the basic tension underlying most cinematic journeys, but the most memorable usually include other layers of poignancy, whether existential, spiritual or political. The precarious trek across mountain roads by two trucks carrying the sensitive and explosive chemical nitroglycerin in Henri-Georges Clouzot’s suspense classic The Wages of Fear (1953) is not only one of the tensest films imaginable, it also features the philosophical subtext of the value of a man’s life, with the drivers taking on the dangerous mission out of financial desperation.

With Clouzot’s nailbiter newly available on Blu-ray and DVD in a 4K digital restoration, buckle up for 10 more of cinema’s most dangerous journeys.

The Lady Vanishes (1938)

Director: Alfred Hitchcock

dangerous journey movie

Your average train trip may not immediately spring to mind as the most hazardous of journeys, but Alfred Hitchcock – unparalleled in his capacity to draw suspense from the apparently harmless and mundane – returned to them time and again, whether as places for the corrupting to chance upon the corruptible (Strangers on a Train, 1951) or enclosed spaces brimming with sexual tension (North by Northwest, 1959).

The Lady Vanishes features his most prolonged train journey, on which soon-to-be-married Iris (Margaret Lockwood) meets the elderly Miss Froy (May Whitty) in a compartment during a cross-continental trip, only to be perplexed by the latter’s bizarre disappearance. Tension builds from the claustrophobic setting and relentless chattering of the tracks as she attempts to solve the mystery, while a climactic shootout between the plucky British passengers and oppressive European forces reflects the anxiety of a nation bracing itself for another world war.

Stagecoach (1939)

Director: John Ford

dangerous journey movie

Rocky terrain is essential to the mythology of the western, and what better way to trace that scenery than via a stagecoach trip? That’s the set-up of John Ford’s formula-shaping landmark of the genre, in which a group of unlikely passengers, including banished prostitute Dallas (Claire Trevor) and convicted cowboy Ringo Kid (a star-making turn from John Wayne) are brought together while travelling eastwards from Arizona to New Mexico.

This was the first time Ford used Monument Valley for location shooting, which would go on to provide the backdrop for many of his future films and shape the genre’s iconography for decades to come. Imagined as a wild, hostile wilderness that must be crossed in order to reach and further build civilisation, it’s populated by the malevolent, ever-threatening presence of the Apache Indians, who – in the film’s exciting climax – attack the vehicle in a prolonged, expertly directed and stunt-filled set-piece.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

Director: John Huston

dangerous journey movie

As in The Wages of Fear, the protagonists of John Huston’s adventure classic The Treasure of the Sierra Madre are compelled to undertake a risky venture by the lure of money, but their ambitions go beyond simply avoiding poverty: they intend to acquire a fortune by mining for gold in the Sierra Madre mountains.

While they encounter many threats along the way (particularly from a gang of Mexican bandits who “don’t need no stinking badges”), the most acute danger that bedevils the gold prospectors in this cautionary tale is the internal menace of greed. Huston’s fable about the reckless pursuit of the American dream ends on a note of cosmic futility – with the treasure hunters’ spoils blowing away like dust on the wind.

Ice Cold in Alex (1958)

Director: J. Lee Thompson

dangerous journey movie

Captain Anson (John Mills) has to come a long way before enjoying the ice cold lager at the end of this British wartime thriller, in a scene later made famous by a 1980s Carlsberg ad. Stationed in North Africa as part of the Western District Campaign during the Second World War, he finds himself sidetracked into dangerous territory on board a humble ambulance. Along for the ride are a sergeant major, two nurses and a suspicious South African soldier (Anthony Quayle), as they attempt to make it to the safe haven of Alexandria.

Making evocative use of its desert setting, Ice Cold in Alex is full of breathless, sweat-inducingly tense sequences, most notably a cautious passage through a minefield and a near-fatal encounter with quicksand while crossing the precarious Qattara Depression. Man may be at war with his fellow man, but, as suggested at end of the the film, “the greater enemy” remains the even more formidable force of nature.

Apocalypse Now (1979)

Director: Francis Ford Coppola

dangerous journey movie

Francis Ford Coppola’s demented, gargantuan fever-dream of a war movie is one long trip further and further into the heart of darkness that Joseph Conrad’s source novella suggests lies deep in the soul of mankind. Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) experiences first-hand the very worst of humanity when he is sent deep into the Vietnamese jungle behind enemy lines. On his mission to locate and kill the defected Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), Willard absorbs with ever-increasing apathy the brutal and mad things people do to each other during war.

The journey upriver itself is a traumatic nightmare of crazed lieutenants surfing in the midst of battle, surprise attacks from lurking tigers, and gunfights where no-one appears to know what’s going on. After all this, Kurtz’s deranged ramblings about the “horror” of everything make a twisted, macabre kind of sense.

Das Boot (1981)

Director: Wolfgang Petersen

dangerous journey movie

The scene-setting text at the start of Das Boot leaves no illusion about the dangers that lie ahead for its characters: we’re informed that of the 40,000 Germans who served on U-boat submarines during the Second World War, 30,000 failed to make it home alive.

That sets the tone for a film that’s as breathlessly exciting as it is unsentimental in its depiction of war as a journey from which few return. A small crew of German soldiers set sail for the Atlantic to take on the British navy, spending most of the ensuing film cramped vulnerably into the tiny interior of the submarine. Unbearable pressure of all kinds is applied when the boat must dive well below the limit deemed safe, in a slow descent into the isolated depths of the ocean that qualifies among cinema’s most tense moments.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Director: Steven Spielberg

dangerous journey movie

From Arthurian legend to Monty Python, the desire to obtain the famously elusive Holy Grail has inspired many quests. This being an Indiana Jones film, all of the attention in Last Crusade is directed towards funhouse thrills and the pulpy excitement of the journey, with Spielberg on top form bringing his masterly eye for cinematic action to a succession of chase sequences and booby traps.

Despite its irreverent tone, the hunt for the grail is something of a MacGuffin to disguise the film’s central theme of – what else for a Spielberg film? – a son and his estranged father rebuilding their relationship. After all, Indy sets out for Europe not for the grail, but to rescue his missing father, and the pair’s fractious but gently amusing stumbling towards intimacy – aided by the chemistry of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery – is the film’s real journey.

The Lord of the Rings (2001-03)

Director: Peter Jackson

dangerous journey movie

For all the warring kingdoms, colourful range of species and vast world-building that saw it being hailed as cinema’s finest fantasy saga, Peter Jackson’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings essentially boils down to just one, straightforward journey – that of the Hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) taking the One Ring to the volcanic Mount Doom so that it and the evil it embodies can be destroyed.

It’s this focus that gives such a grand tale a real sense of intimacy, as we get to know Frodo – as well as his loyal companion Sam (Sean Astin) – and become increasingly invested in their fate over the course of the three films. They encounter all sorts of obstacles and monsters on their way, but bravely persevere with an endearing sense of stoicism, functioning as a celebratory example of the astonishing feats even the most ordinary of us can achieve.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Director: George Miller

dangerous journey movie

Between the despotic Citadel run by the gruesome patriarch Immortan Joe and the hordes of rogue biker gangs that lurk outside, there are few places to hide in the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max: Fury Road. So truck driver Furiosa (Charlize Theron) risks everything when she sets out to the Fury Road in search of a utopian ‘Green Place’ with five of Joe’s slave-wives smuggled onboard, and then later returns to liberate the impoverished citizens of the Citadel.

Acclaimed for its stunning action sequences of vehicle-to-vehicle combat, the film barely lets up during its two-hour running time as Furiosa and her companion Max (Tom Hardy) are pursued by all manner of crazed motorists. Crucially, the peril feels very real thanks to an admirable commitment towards practical effects over CGI . Every ludicrous feat and thunderous explosion carries all the more weight thanks to the real-life, death-defying stunts behind them.

Sicario (2015)

Director: Denis Villeneuve

dangerous journey movie

The crossing of borders, from a place comfortingly recognisable as home towards an unfamiliar land occupied by the ‘Other’, has been a particularly fruitful source for cinematic tension, with the US -Mexican border being used as an effective setting for generations of thrillers, from Touch of Evil (1958) to No Country for Old Men (2007).

The most gripping scene in Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario exploits these anxieties, as FBI agent and protagonist Kate (Emily Blunt) joins a disarmingly flippant CIA officer (Josh Brolin) and his mysteriously quiet Mexican companion (Benicio del Toro) on a drive from Texas into the Mexican city of Juarez to hunt a cartel drug lord. Tension mounts the deeper they stray into unknown territory, past abject poverty and rotting corpses, all set to a booming score of impending dread.

dangerous journey movie

A unit of the British Royal Air Force is assigned to bomb a German railway. Although they are ordered to fly at a high altitude, their bomber is spotted by the Germans, who attack them from both air and land. After the squadron leader is shot, Flight Lt. Terrence Forbes takes charge and rashly flies the plane beneath the cloud cover, causing the plane to be shot down. The plane crashes in the woods and the survivors--Forbes, an Australian; Flying Officer Johnny Hammond, an American; Flight Sergeant Kirk Edwards, a Scot; Flying Officer Jed Forrest, a Canadian; and Flight Sergeant Lloyd Hollis, the wounded son of a famous World War I flyer--hide hurriedly. The plane explodes in flames, and the Germans assume that everyone perished in the crash until a German soldier spots blood from one of the wounded flyers. After they are captured, the flyers are sent to a prison camp, where camp commander Major Otto Baumeister interviews them. Johnny pretends to cooperate, but at the first opportunity, knocks the major unconscious. Terry, who speaks German, then tricks the other soldiers inside. Once they have subdued the Germans, the men search the office and find papers relating to a hidden Messerschmidt factory. They then begin their dangerous trip across enemy territory. Believing that his wounds imperil the group, Lloyd decides to give himself up to the Germans, but the other men stop him before he gets very far. They then overpower enough German soldiers to provide them all with Nazi uniforms and board a train. When Baumeister learns of the attack, he flies to meet the train in Berlin, but as the men had earlier been discovered and ejected from the train, Baumeister fails to capture them. While searching for provisions, Terry learns that they are near an important chemical plant and suggests that the men sabotage it. Jed tries to stop them, but the men override his objections and successfully destroy the plant. Lloyd is wounded again and Terry searches for a doctor. With the help of Kaethe Brahms, a member of the underground, he finds one who is anti-Nazi, but Lloyd's agonized moans are overheard by one of the doctor's patients, and she summons the Gestapo. The men overpower the police, but despite the doctor's best efforts, Lloyd dies. Kaethe sends them to her parents' house near the Dutch border. When they arrive, they are warmly welcomed by the Brahmses, but Kaethe later reveals that they are impostors and that her real parents are in a concentration camp. Kirk is killed during their escape over the roof, and the others steal Baumeister's car and drive to the border, where Kaethe leaves the men to carry on in Germany. Across the border, the men run out of gas and follow a passing gasoline carrier, which leads them to a camouflaged airplane. It turns out to be a captured English bomber destined for a surprise attack on the Battersea waterworks in England. As the three remaining flyers board the plane, Jed is shot, leaving Terry and Johnny to fly the plane to England. There they learn that Jed will recover from his wounds.

Chris Kerr was 12 when he first observed a deathbed vision. His memory of that summer in 1974 is blurred, but not the sense of mystery he felt at the bedside of his dying father. Throughout Kerr’s childhood in Toronto, his father, a surgeon, was too busy to spend much time with his son, except for an annual fishing trip they took, just the two of them, to the Canadian wilderness. Gaunt and weakened by cancer at 42, his father reached for the buttons on Kerr’s shirt, fiddled with them and said something about getting ready to catch the plane to their cabin in the woods. “I knew intuitively, I knew wherever he was, must be a good place because we were going fishing,” Kerr told me.

Kerr now calls what he witnessed an end-of-life vision. His father wasn’t delusional, he believes. His mind was taking him to a time and place where he and his son could be together, in the wilds of northern Canada.

Kerr followed his father into medicine, and in the last 10 years he has hired a permanent research team that expanded studies on deathbed visions to include interviews with patients receiving hospice care at home and with their families, deepening researchers’ understanding of the variety and profundity of these visions.

‘A Journey’ Review – A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

'A Journey' Review - A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

A Journey is a heartwrenching Filipino drama about a woman with cancer setting out to complete her bucket list together with her husband and childhood friend. It’s a beautiful and compelling piece of filmmaking about what truly matters.

I must warn you though, this film will make you very sad.

A Journey opens with cancer survivor Shane, her husband Bryan, and their best friend Kristoff, aka Tupe, celebrating her 39th birthday at a karaoke bar. Kristoff is a famous television actor and Bryan works as his manager while Shane runs a coffee shop. The three have been friends since childhood, while Bryan and Shane have been in love for just as long.

Not long after her birthday, Shane notices some worrying symptoms and goes to her oncologist. The news is devastating, Shane’s cancer has returned. After having suffered through chemo once before, Shane doesn’t want treatment this time. Instead, she wants to spend whatever time she has left getting through her “magic list” with Bryan and Tupe’s help. The list includes some fun items like seeing penguins, going snorkeling, and recreating her first date with Bryan, but also emotionally heavy goals like reconnecting with her estranged father.

'A Journey' Review - A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

A Journey (via Netflix)

A Journey is a heartfelt drama exploring themes of love, friendship, and the things that matter when faced with mortality. It may start with a bad karaoke scene, but this isn’t a feel-good romance where everything is honky dory in the end. The film offers an honest (and depressing) exploration of the often tragic reality of the human condition.

A devastated Bryan seems to accept his wife’s decision and even quits his job to spend time with her. He does, however, have an ulterior motive as he’s hoping Shane will agree to start her cancer treatments once the magic list is complete. Wanting to help, Tupe organizes an all-expenses paid trip to Tasmania for the trio. Shane is apprehensive about allowing her friend to pay for such an expensive trip, but she eventually relents.

'A Journey' Review - A Beautiful Yet Tragic Tale Of Death, Life, And Love

A Journey | Image via Netflix

As lighthearted as the trio tries to be during their trip, the finality of their actions is never far from our minds. One compelling scene is where Tupe and Bryan debate whether life is about the journey or the destination. For Tupe, it’s about the destination, but Bryan sees the journey as more important. Shane, however, is acutely aware of how important each moment is and wants to spend her time making the most of it.

The premise of a cancer patient choosing to live to the fullest in their final months has been done before, most notably in the 2007 tearjerker The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. However, a movie doesn’t need to have a never-before-seen synopsis to be good. And that’s precisely what A Journey is. It’s a touching story about three childhood friends finding meaning in their lives in the face of devastating adversity.

I also broke down A Journey’s ending if you wanted some emotional support after that crushing climax. You can also read more about Penguin, Tasmania , where the movie was filmed.
