30 Epic Graduation Trip Ideas (2024 USA & International)

30 graduation trip ideas

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

15 U.S. Graduation Trip Ideas

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

lighting torch at sunset on Black Rock on Maui

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Bear in river

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) If planning a trip to Alaska feels too daunting, you can join one of Austin Adventures’ group family trips, like the one to Kenai Fjords and Peninsula .

You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Women with arms up overlooking view in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park can get crazily crowded in the summer, but if you go early enough in June, you can get there before the worst of the crowds and when the water is still strong, resulting in beautiful, powerful waterfalls. (See this guide to easy hikes in Yosemite .)

Listen to our podcast episode on Yosemite National Park for ideas on the best places to stay, hikes, and other things to do in Yosemite .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Boat on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

Magic Kingdom castle from across the lake

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas sign with city skyline behind

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Tips for driving Highway One on the California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Delicate arch in Arches National Park (from Canva)

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Be sure to listen to this podcast for some great tips on off-the-beaten-path stops on a Southwest Grand Circle road trip or read my friend Lesli’s Utah National Parks road trip itinerary .

Maine Windjammer Cruise

Schooner Heritage on the water

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Balconies in the French Quarter New Orleans

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsness

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. To get away from the crowds, spend a few days up in the rugged and remote West Fjords . Find out how much a trip to Iceland costs and read my Iceland travel tips .

family in Shinsekai

It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

Giants Causeway Northern Ireland

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

In the Republic of Ireland, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher and a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula are some of my favorite spots in Ireland. Find out how much a trip to Ireland costs and tips for traveling to Ireland .

Azores, Portugal

waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

Path across water to Naxos town

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Find out how much a trip to Greece costs or check out our 10-day Greece itinerary.

Tuscan hillside

Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August.

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Matterhorn behind a blue lake and green fields in Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

Dad and teen in Paris

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. Indulge your graduate’s interests in art, history, or food with private tours and cooking classes. Find out how much a trip to Paris costs , check out our 5-day Paris itinerary , and download our Paris trip planning checklist .

South Africa

Zebras on savannah in Tanzania (from Canva)

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

Palm tree and white sand in Fiji

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Machu Picchu in Peru

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

View of pools and beach at Ritz Carlton Aruba from above

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Graduation cap and diploma with Allianz Travel insurance website on phone

Once you have booked your dream trip to celebrate your graduate, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance! Travel insurance can protect you in the case of unexpected and unforeseen circumstances that may arise on your trip such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, theft, emergency medical expenses and transportation (this is especially important when traveling out of the country!), travel delays, rental car damage, and more.

Even better, also gift your graduate an annual travel insurance plan that protects their trips all year long. It is the perfect gift for kids that will be flying back and forth to college or young adults just starting out in their career and spending their newfound paid time off traveling.

Before we sent our daughter off to college in Arizona, I made sure she was covered by an AllTrips Premier annual travel insurance plan from Allianz Travel. Allianz Travel has been our trusted travel insurance provider for years and the investment has paid off in multitudes. Not only do I know that her trips to school and back are protected against flight cancellations, travel delays, and lost luggage, but as an inexperienced solo traveler it gives us both peace of mind knowing that she has access to a 24-hour hotline for assistance on all sorts of travel emergencies.

Shop for the Allianz Travel Insurance policy that is right for you!

24 Awesome US Graduation Trip Ideas for Your 2024 Senior

Are you looking for some awesome graduation trip ideas for your senior? I’ve been there and I have a list of ideas that are perfect for your teen!

This year I have a senior in high school. When I started this blogging journey, it was to help families travel more before their kids’ grow up and move out . And now I’m here. My son is about to embark on his college journey and move out, at least for a little while. Which is why I needed some ideas for a graduation trip he won’t forget.

I promised each of my children to take them on fun senior trips. I fully believe travel helps us spend quality time together that we don’t get in our day-to-day lives. Travel removes the responsibilities of home life, school, activities, and obligations. And since I’ve focused on travel with teenagers over the last 10 years, many of our past vacations inspired me to create this list.

As a high school senior (who’s also dual-enrolled to earn his Associate’s Degree) there is a lot of stress and pressure of finishing school, choosing a college, moving away from home, meeting new people, and all that those life changes bring. One last hurrah and a trip of a lifetime is not only a way to celebrate this important time in his life, it’s a great way to have family time before his next big step.

As someone deeply passionate about family travel, I’ve been on this blogging journey to help families make the most of their grad trips. The following fun senior trip ideas cover everything from a group graduation vacation, travel with a senior class, or epic trips for high school graduates with friends or family .

Here’s the deal: Research consistently emphasizes the positive impact of well-planned graduation trips, not just on the graduating senior but on the entire family. Families who’ve followed my suggestions have had some incredible journeys.

Graduation Trips on a Budget

High school graduation trips do not have to break the bank. Depending on the kind of trip your teen wants, finding affordable graduation trips in USA and staying on a small budget can still be a lot of fun.

graduation trip ideas 1 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located on the big island of Hawaii, this popular park offers hiking trails, sightseeing, lava tubes, and much more. Backpacking is allowed at certain sites within park limits. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

1. New York City

I fully believe New York City not only is the ultimate travel experience today, but it is also well within a budget vacation option. It’s been one of our best graduation trips.

Flights to NYC are usually not too expensive, but they do increase as summer approaches. Book a trip immediately after graduation in late May if possible. Keep an eye on Skyscanner for the best flight prices.

What to do:

Places such as Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Trinity Church (where the Hamiltons are buried and as seen on National Treasure), The New York Public Library, and Washington Square Park, are free to visit. Or in the case of the Lady Liberty, very reasonable cost.

These are places that your teen will know from TV and Movies. We have always had a great time seeing our favorite places in person. Hit Bedford and Grove to see the Friends building. Wander through Central Park. Search for filming locations of your favorite media and you’ll come up with a list to visit on your own.

Eating in the big city of New York can also be reasonable as well. Just stay away from the touristy section of Times Square when it comes to dining. Your best option is downtown for Chinatown or Little Italy.

Where to stay:

To make it reasonable, stay outside the city and take the subway in. We’ve found charming VRBOs in Jersey City (which isn’t too far from the Statue of Liberty Ferry and is only about 4 stops into the city.

Camping is another excellent choice for traveling on a budget . Your choice of destination is unlimited. If your grad wants to even try out a solo trip, look to one of the state parks near you. That way your teen gets some independence but isn’t too far away for their first time out on their own.

If you don’t want to go all-in on buying new camping gear , you can also consider one of your state parks with cabin accommodations.

3. Rent a Campervan

When my son and I started tossing around ideas for high school senior trip ideas, the one we landed on was renting a campervan to explore the National Parks in California .

We are renting with Escape Campervans , out of San Francisco. Drivers do have to be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license, so this is not the kind of trip a high school senior could do. However, we found it’s an amazing way to see a lot at a lower cost. Our van rental costs about $300 more than a car rental for the same time period and includes our sleeping and cooking facilities. The only other things we are paying for are food (which we would have to do anyway) and campsites.

Escape Campervans have locations in:

  • Los Angeles
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Francisco

You can rent round trip or between any of those destinations.

4. South Dakota

At first glance, South Dakota’s Badlands National Park and the Black Hills aren’t necessarily places that jump to mind for a graduation trip , but their rugged and untouched beauty will leave your senior in awe.

While most national parks require at least a few miles of hiking to reach their greatest points of interest, Badlands National Park gives you stunning views almost immediately—like Door Trail or Badlands Loop Road.

Feel as if you’re in an Epic Star Wars or Star Trek adventure with some of the landscapes as well. Notch Trail winds through canyon shelves and ends in dramatic views that will definitely give you the feeling of being on another planet.

Ideas for Graduation trips with Family

If your senior is moving away to college in the fall, this may be the last time you get to take whole family vacations for a while. With college breaks not always lining up with younger kids’ school holidays, it’s the perfect time to do one last big hurrah with the whole gang.

Plus these trips make for amazing travel photos .

Why visiting Walt Disney World is better with older children.

5. Walt Disney World

If you haven’t done Disney as a whole family, this may be the time to do it. Not only is Disney better with older kids , in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to celebrate. With so much more attractions geared towards older kids such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney as one of your high school graduation vacation ideas is a fun for the whole family idea.

Walt Disney World is the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still have plenty to do. Don’t sweat trying to do it all, it’s nearly impossible. Pick a few of your must-dos, and enjoy the time together.

I would recommend staying on property in order to use Disney transportation.

Otherwise, consider getting a vacation home with a pool where you can have a day to chill poolside, yet still have all the things you need to snack and feed your hungry family.

Of course, if you’re in the Orlando area and are more thrill seeker fans, you can combine Disney with a trip to Universal. Grab my what not to miss at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter .

If you’re looking for ideas for a graduation trip that gives your senior a chance to bond with his family, then book a cruise .

You and your loved ones can enjoy sailing together while you soak up some Vitamin D on deck. Cruise ships also offer a variety of activities and events like spa treatments, scavenger hunts, dancing, and more—so everyone can find something they enjoy.

Alaska National Parks Road Trip

7. Alaskan Cruise or Alaska Road Trip

No matter what time of year, there’s never a bad time to visit Alaska—the northernmost U.S. state.

Although it can be expensive to fly, you’ll be able to experience wildlife, pristine landscapes, and exciting Alaskan festivities. This makes it one of the best places for a senior trip.

If you go during winter, you’ll get to see spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes that are sure to make your senior feel warm inside (no pun intended). Not to mention, this is a fantastic way to see the Northern Lights without leaving the country.

Consider either an Alaskan cruise as a bucket list to see incredible glaciers, or explore further inland with a road trip through the National Parks in Alaska.

Alaska was a bucket list item for us and an incredible way to view vistas we don’t see every day. Plus, your teen may be interested in summer employment in Alaska in the future. We met many college kids spending their summers in the Last Frontier.

8. All-Inclusive Graduation Trips

Like a cruise but on land, an all-inclusive resort is a fantastic way to make sure you’re taken care of during your vacation. Instead of paying for each individual part of your trip separately, you pay for it all in one fell swoop.

One of my favorite high school graduation family trip ideas, all-inclusive let you bond, do activities together or on your own, and generally just relax.

And, with options like room service and on-site dining, you can focus on spending time with your family instead of having to go out into town or eat in your hotel room. This can range from luxury Club Med destinations to horseback riding dude ranches.

Some top choices in the US include:

  • Tyler Place Family Resort – Vermont
  • Bungalows Key Largo – Florida Keys
  • Fair Hills Resort – Minnesota

15. Puerto Rico

No passport is required to get to Puerto Rico. Because it’s a US Territory, you can travel here as you would within the United States. College students can take advantage of cheap flights and warm weather. A four day itinerary in Puerto Rico will hit some of the island’s best spots.

San Juan is home to several historic sites worth exploring. The city also has tons of restaurants that serve up authentic Latin American cuisine.

The island also has plenty of beaches and places to go surfing. You could even do a natural waterslide and rainforest hike .

16. Key West

The southernmost city in Florida, Key West is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and eclectic nightlife. There’s no shortage of fun here; a visit to Mallory Square and Duval Street will provide you with everything from street performers to food vendors and lounges – just be prepared to see some serious sunburns if you plan on spending your time on the beach.

18. Tybee Island and Savannah

If you’re looking for remote beaches mixed with old world Southern charm, Tybee Island and Savannah are my choice for your graduation trip with your teens.

First, let’s talk about the beaches of Tybee Island. this is a true hidden gem along the Georgia coastline that offers pristine beaches, sandy shores, and fresh seafood.

Take a leisurely bike ride along the picturesque streets or embark on a kayaking excursion to discover the islands natural beauty.

Savannah, in addition to it’s ornate antebellum architecture, is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. If your teen is into art, fashion, or film, this school has woven its creative influence throughout the charming city. See a mural in a local business, it’s likely a SCAD student may have worked on it.

Check out the SCAD fashion or film festival put on each year by the school and combine your kids love into a trip they’ll never forget.

Bright Lights Big Cities

19. Chicago

I’ve always thought Chicago is a fantastic big city that feels like a small town. It’s midwest charm, history, and architecture offer plenty to see and do.

A trip to Chicago is a must for any comedy fan. Second City, one of comedy’s most famous institutions, is located just north of the Chicago River. Their interactive improv courses are also an awesome way to get your grad laughing. After class, you can grab dinner at any of the many restaurants that surround it—from Korean fried chicken to BBQ pizza and artisan cheeses.

And while you’re in Chicago, baseball fans will love checking out Wrigley Field.

And don’t miss such Chicago food staples as Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza, and a Chicago-style dog from Portillos.

20. Los Angeles

No matter what you’re into, Los Angeles has it. The entertainment capital of America, LA is a great choice for your grad trip. Be sure to visit Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and Malibu (the movie stars’ playground). You might even spot a celebrity or two!

One of LA’s top attractions is Universal Studios . It has rides, shows, and a lot more fun to offer. If your grad likes Harry Potter, this is the place to try all kinds of butterbeer . Everyone will be amazed by what they see there. Also, try to attend an NBA game at Staples Center.

21. San Diego

What teen doesn’t dream of an amazing trip to Comic-Con? In San Diego, your soon-to-be grad can bask in geek culture and look forward to a new adventure that his friends will envy—and remember. Make sure you take pictures of him with as many superheroes as possible for bragging rights. If there’s one thing we learned from The Hobbit, it’s that everyone loves Legolas!

22. New Orleans

I love New Orleans. Beyond Bourbon Street, there’s a lot for teens to do in New Orleans .

The birthplace of jazz, this city will give you and your teen a new appreciation for the cultural rich music on dozens of street corners in the French Quarter.

Then there’s the food. If you have a teen that loves to eat, they can explore their likes and dislikes with New Orleans staples such as beignets, gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, muffalettas, and jambalaya, just to name a few.

You can also get an authentic Mardi Gras experience, without the chaos that is Bourbon street the day of. Mardi Gras officially begins on January 6th (Three Kings Day) and there are events from January until Mardi Gras day throughout the city.

I’d recommend staying in the Warehouse District for ease of access to the best spots in the city.

Graduation Trip Ideas

23. Seattle

My daughter’s choice for her graduation trip is Seattle, Washington. She’s a music fan and coffee lover, as well as enjoying nature. This gateway to the Pacific Northwest makes it a perfect destination.

While in Seattle, explore the Pike Place Market , the Museum of Pop Culture, and a trip to the top of the Space Needle.

While many people know that Starbucks arose from Seattle, the Emerald City was some to quite the coffee culture long before Starbucks became a household name. Get your teen ready for late night studying with the Seattle Coffee Culture Tour .

And of course, if you’re like me, and grew up on 90s grunge, visiting the birthplace of your favorite artists with your teen is an incredible shared experience.

Outside the main city, visit Olympic National Park , a vast park of nearly a million acres with several distinct ecosystems, including a rainforest.

If you have a little extra time, about 3 hours from Seattle is North Cascades National Park.

24. Portland

Portland, Oregon is known for its weirdness. In fact, it’s their slogan, Keep Portland Weird.

Portland is filled with quirky neighborhoods, artisanal spirit, and a thriving food scene. The city has a vibe like no other.

Additionally, Portland is committed to sustainability and green energy. Be on the lookout for how they are keeping to “green” practices that connect it to the nature around it.

Favorites in Portland include Powell’s City of Books, one of the world’s largest independent bookstores, the Japanese gardens, and nearby drives to dozens of waterfalls.

Need some help figuring out your next senior trip? Here’s a short guide for your convenience.

Destination.

When it’s time to plan your senior class trip, consider a destination or two that you’d like to consider. Do you want to visit a city with a lot of history? Do you want to plan a trip with several outdoor excursions and activities? Of course, budget will be a determining factor, but narrowing your ideas to one or two locations will help in the planning process.

Whether your budget is conservative or generous, travel is possible either way. Think about money that will come from different sources. Will each student pay their own way? Do you have several fundraisers planned? Do you have corporate sponsors that are willing to make a donation to your trip? It’s good to have a game plan for the “who’s” and “where’s” when it comes to budget.

Dates of Travel

Make sure you know what travel dates are approved by your school administration. You’ll want to have a clear idea of when you can travel prior to planning the trip. If you can have an alternate date approved as well, that is ideal. Sometimes popular destinations fill up fast for hotels and activities. And if you have pre-approval from your administration for the dates of travel, when it comes time for final approval, that’s one less hurdle for you

Typically when students learn that a trip is happening, there’s a lot of interest right off the bat. That enthusiasm can wane so it’s important for you to “sell” the trip to your students. They will match your level of excitement and of course you want as many students to experience the trip as possible. Emails to parents, posters in your school, shared information in apps like Remind all help to keep the enrollment in your trip robust. You want to fill those buses to maximize your trip budget.

Once you have sketched out your destination, your group size, the dates of travel, and your budget, contact Peak. We will go over all the goals of your trip and partner with you to build the itinerary to fit your needs and create an experience for your students that they won’t soon forget.

18 Unforgettable Senior Trip Ideas for 2024

Looking for the best senior trip ideas for your soon-to-be-graduated teenager?

As high school teachers, the parents of a high schooler, and world travelers, we have a lot of experience traveling and talking about travel with young people.

Here are our 18 senior trip ideas for places to travel to celebrate with your graduate.

High School graduation marks an important coming-of-age moment for students and families. And a senior trip offers an opportunity to mark this important moment.

Some of the links in this blog are affiliate links. If you click and purchase, we will receive a commission at no extra charge to you.  We only recommend activities or places we have experienced, and all opinions are our own.

senior trip ideas--what to do after graduation

What Is A Senior Trip?

Traditionally, a senior trip is an opportunity for seniors to have one last experience together as a class before they graduate. In this traditional notion, senior trips are something your senior organizes with their friends.

However, with travel being more accessible to more people, the idea of a senior trip as a special trip taken by a family to celebrate their child’s graduation is fast growing in popularity. Therefore, we have chosen to list our ideas by location not by type.

When To Take a Senior Trip?

Senior Trips are traditionally taken in late May or June soon after the graduation ceremony. Some school districts still allow for senior weeks prior to graduation where students have a few days before graduation to travel or stay together. However, these are far less common.

What Are the Criteria for a Good Senior Trip Destination?

All of the places listed here we have traveled to with our own teens. We have also used our “access” to hundreds of teens over the years to talk not only about our travel but places they would love to see and experience. So each of these locations is full of teen-friendly activities.

However, for each location, we have noted if this trip would be possible for a senior-only trip without parents. We are basing our “senior-only”  recommendations on the following criteria: good public transit and hostels.

Good public transit is an extra important criteria in part because teens aren’t old enough to rent a car. While rideshare platforms like Uber and Lyft may also be possible, these platforms also have age restrictions potentially making them unusable by independent travelers who aren’t 18 or older.

Age Consideration for a Senior Trip: Restriction on Accommodations, Cruises and Rideshares

Neither Uber nor Lyft allow passengers under 18 to have an account. Now, let’s be honest, we all know teens under 18 that use rideshares. But if a driver suspects a rider to be under 18, they have the right to require age verification before completing the trip.

Similarly, most overnight accommodations require guests to be 18 or older. In essence, when you are checking into a hotel or a hostel you are signing a contract. And you must have legal status to make that contract valid.

Therefore, if your child is 17 when they graduate and wants to go on a friend-only senior trip, there will need to be a minimum of one person over 18 who is doing all the accommodation booking, Lyft calling, and hotel or hostel registration. Which means that that person assumes responsibility. Yikes. Definitely, something to consider if your kid is the sole 18-year-old.

Additionally, some places that are perceived as more party places — think Spring Break hotspots – will actually require that guests be at least 21. So, if your graduate is thinking of heading to Cabo, they probably won’t be able to find a hotel to let them stay there.

Cruises are also out for friend-only graduation trips as cruise lines require passengers traveling alone to be over 21.

Finally, and most importantly, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), minors may be able to travel without their parents internationally.  Although  “They may, however, require a notarized written consent letter from both parents.”

Moreover, CBP recommends that “Minors interested in traveling without their parents should contact the embassy [of the country they wish to visit] to address admissibility questions.”

What Type of Travel is Typical for Senior Trips?

While senior trips were traditionally beach vacations (think Spring Break), seniors and their families today are branching out and traveling in different ways to celebrate this important milestone. So for the most part, we have left the beaches off this list.

Unforgettable Senior Trip Ideas

Grad nights: the ultimate graduation trip idea.

Both Disneyland and Six Flags have Grad Nights. These nights are absolutely tailored to your graduate. I mean they are called “Grad Night.”

However, with both programs, your child’s school must register for the event. Tickets are purchased from the school so that the parks can verify that the event is only for high school grads. Graduates who are interested in this option should get their schools on board early as school spots, especially for Disneyland, sell out in the early fall.

But if your school was one of those lucky enough to book either a Disneyland or Six Flags Grad Night, let’s get into it.

Disneyland Grad Nights

Although Walt Disney World ditched its Grad Nights way back in 2012, Disneyland still offers these popular nights where grads take over the park. While mostly frequented by local graduates, schools from all over the US can organize Disneyland Grad Night trips.

Offered on 15 nights throughout May and June, Disneyland Grad Nigh ts have 3 different ticket types. The least expensive ticket, which is around $100 per person per night, gets grads into an after-hours party at California Adventure.

If your grads want full-day access to California Adventure, plus the after-hours party, ticket prices go up to around $130. Add a hopper ticket to Disneyland and the tickets shoot up to over $200.

But can the magic of Disney really have a price? Oh wait, it does. But, while the tickets for this night are locked in, there are still ways to plan a trip to Disneyland on a budget , including taking the c heapest way to get from LAX to Disneyland .

Six Flags Grad Night

six flags grad night as a great senior trip idea

Not to be outdone, Six Flags locations also offer an after-hours Grad Night. At the Six Flags party, the park is only open to those students and chaperones with a grad night ticket.

Grads can enjoy thrilling rides, DJs and dance floors throughout the park, and yummy food. However, unlike Disneyland with its dozens of nights, Six Flag locations have 1 or 2 nights in either May or June dedicated to this event.

Tickets vary based on the Six Flags location. And grads with a Six Flags pass still need to buy a special event ticket.

So What If My School Didn’t Book a Grad Night Experience?

Of course, senior trips to both of these parks and to others can certainly happen outside of these special nights. Although these nights are tailored to graduates, any night in Disneyland is….well, magical.

Graduation Trip Ideas in the United States

Even if the United States is home, there is still so much to see and do to make a special graduate trip in the country. From the beaches of Los Angeles to the stages of Broadway, a US trip is a great way to start your graduate on their next American dream.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is perfect if your graduate is a fan of beaches, movie stars, and of course….Disney. If Disneyland is your destination, these are the best parks for teens.

Otherwise, with beaches, sunshine, and great eats, there is truly so much more to Los Angeles than the Magical Kingdom.

If your graduate is thinking of a friend-only trip to L.A., a few words to the wise.

While we use public transit whenever we are in Los Angeles, families are justified to be a bit leery of sending their new graduate to L.A. on a friend-only trip. L.A. is after all a very car-heavy city.

So, for the graduate who is dreaming of some friend-only time in the California sun, we definitely recommend Venice Beach. A short ride share from LAX, graduates can enjoy bike riding on the beach or people-watching at the skatepark. Venice Beach also has some great hostels . And once you get there, a bike is all your graduate needs to get around.

Long Beach is also a great California beach town with lots to see and do with teenagers .

bike riding in Venice Beach is a great senior trip idea

While senior trips are traditionally taken in May or June, we can’t help but put an early senior trip recommendation on the list.

While Denver is one of our favorite US cities year-round, a ski trip to really lean into that senioritis during your graduate’s last Spring Break is also a great idea.

With its proximity to the mountains, Denver has numerous ski resorts within 60 miles of the city. Never skied before, check out our list of the best ski resorts in Colorado for beginners .

While we definitely recommend a family trip to the mountains to celebrate the impending milestone, a ski trip to Colorado is also possible for a friend-only trip.

Breckenridge is the best resort for a friend-only ski trip as it has the Bivvi hostel . And graduates can book a shuttle directly from Denver International Airport to Breckenridge.

If skiing is not your think don’t worry. The city of Denver has so many things to do with teens .

In the heart of downtown Denver is Elitch Gardens, a popular amusement park. You can also see a baseball game, take in a concert at Red Rocks, or a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Denver, Colorado truly has something for everyone.

What graduate wouldn’t want to celebrate their achievements in the Big Apple? With great entertainment, great food, and a beautiful skyline, New York is an exciting place to celebrate the achievements of your graduates.

And of all the U.S. cities, New York is one of the easiest to navigate using public transit. And for that reason, New York is also a great location for a friend-only senior trip.

Of course, hotels in Manhattan are known for their high prices. But if your graduate is open to dorm-style accommodations, the city can be theirs for around $60 a night.

If island time is your graduate’s idea of a dream trip, we definitely recommend Kauai. With its rugged landscape and opportunities for adventures, Kauai is a perfect place to unwind after the busy weeks leading up to graduation.

Even a short 3 days in Kauai is an excellent graduation trip.

A trip to Kauai should involve two things, bike riding and kayaking the Wailua River to Secret Falls. And we can help you with both.

Two Bikes Near a Fence in Kauai

But we definitely do not recommend Kauai for a friend-only trip. While there is public transit on the island, a car is really necessary to get around the island.

One of our best tips for traveling with teens is to include adventure and Alaska has that covered.

The wild open spaces of Alaska are a monumental place to welcome this new phase in a graduate’s life. From the bears of Denali National Park to the whales of Seward, Alaska is definitely a must-see for any nature-loving graduate.

Our 10-day itinerary takes you from Fairbanks to Denali down to Seward and then to Anchorage. Our trip was all done by public transit so the trip could be replicated on a friend-only trip.

Alaska is also an excellent trip with family with so many things to do that everyone will enjoy.

And while HostelWorld, which is the platform we use to book hostels, only has listings in Fairbanks and Anchorage . There are several independent hostels in Seward and Denali, the two other stops on our itinerary.

seeing the glaciers of alaska is a great senior trip idea

Graduation Trip Ideas in Central and South America

With the exception of Mexico City and Peru, several of these locations are perfect for your beach-loving graduates.

We love traveling in Central and South America not only because it is much more budget-friendly than Europe. But also because it allows us to expand our knowledge of diverse cultures.

Be aware that the ideal time to travel to Central and South America is really December-April. By May and June, many of these locations may be getting pretty hot as you are going during the dry season.

Mexico City

We love Mexico City. It is truly one of our favorite cities in Central and South America and has so many things for teens to experience.

With amazing street food, charming neighborhoods, and the most museums per capita of any city in the world, Mexico City is a truly remarkable place to spend 3-4 days .

While Mexico City is a megalopolis, as long as you and your graduate are smart travelers, Mexico City is safe. If you have concerns, pay special attention to the Mexico City neighborhood where you and/or your graduate stays.

We love the Historic Center, but others prefer La Condesa or Roma. And with numerous hostels and a great public transit system, Mexico City is also a good option for a friend-only trip.

Easily accessible from the United States and English speaking, Belize is an easy first international trip for US travelers. And for those who are looking for a warm vacation will be rewarded with coral reefs, delicious pupusas, and days and days of sun.

If you are making your way to the islands and are on a budget or want to travel more sustainably, we definitely recommend taking the water taxi over a flight .

Not only does the water taxi offer significant savings, you have an opportunity to travel with the locals. And who knows, a dolphin might decide to befriend your boat as one did with ours.

For your animal-loving graduate who doesn’t necessarily love the cold of Alaska, Costa Rica is an excellent choice.

One of the most biodiverse countries in the world, Costa Rica is the perfect place to shake off the stress of the past few months and live life “Pura Vida” with your newly graduated teenager.

We lived in Costa Rica and travel back often with our own son so we know there are so many things to do with teenagers.

The two coastlines of Costa Rica are so different, we recommend traveling to both. But if you don’t have as much time as we do in our 10-day Costa Rican itinerary, then we definitely recommend the Caribbean side.

Be aware that the drinking age in Costa Rica , and most of Central and South America, is 18 years old. You will definitely want to negotiate with your senior if you have concerns about most seniors ability to legally drink in the country.

One of our most unforgettable trips in all of our years of traveling together as a family has been our time in Peru. While we definitely don’t recommend this trip as a friend-only experience given the more complex travel moves, we can not say enough about how important this trip has been to us.

Whether you go as long as we did on our 3-week Pervian itinerary or just focus on Cusco and Machu Picchu, we promise that your time in Peru will be an amazing send-off to your graduate.

Graduation Trip Ideas in Europe

We have taken our own teen to Europe numerous times, and certainly recommend so much of the continent to you.

With its excellent public transit system, amazing food, and noteworthy sites, any graduate would be thrilled to mark their achievement in Europe.

Europe’s extensive public transit makes Europe a very viable friend-only trip.

But please note that June starts the high season in Europe so if you are planning a traditional senior trip in May or June, earlier is definitely better.

Bike in front of the Spanish Steps

We love Italy for a trip with teenagers. With its iconic architecture, renowned sites, and delicious gelato, there is so much here to experience. We have a 7-day Italy itinerary with teens that is perfect for a senior trip.  The entire trip is taken on high-speed trains, so our itinerary could also work for a friend-only trip.

Regardless of where in Italy you travel, we definitely think Rome should be at the center of your time in Italy. Rome has s o many experiences for teenagers .

Like the other European cities on this list, Rome has great hostels and public transit making it especially great for a friend-only trip.

It is also hard to imagine going to Italy without seeing Venice with your graduate . Venice gets busy in the summer. If your child’s graduation is at the end of May, we recommend leaving ASAP and starting your trip in Venice to skirt the crowds as much as possible.

Paris is a wonderful senior trip either as a family experience or a friend-only trip.

With numerous high-quality hostels in Paris and extremely comprehensive public transit throughout the city and countryside, the City of Lights is a smart choice for graduates to explore on their own.

While June starts the high season in Paris, there are still ways for families on a budget to experience the city.

And since your goal for a trip to Paris will be to immerse your graduate in all the art, architecture, and culture, we definitely recommend the Paris Pass as a way to save money while taking in all the sites.

Scandinavia

Some of the best European cities are found in the Scandinavian countries, including our favorite of Copenhagen, Denmark. Scandinavia’s family-friendly culture (and its love of our favorite mode of transit, the bike) make it an uplifting place to have one more family holiday before your graduate leaves home.

In addition to Denmark and Sweden, our Scandinavian itinerary includes a stopover in Iceland through Icelandic Airlines’ free stopover program.  Iceland has grown in great popularity over the last few years.

While we have loved our time in Iceland, most tourists need a car to see this island nation. While one can also see the country through bus tours, this dependence of cars to see the ring of the island makes it a less good friend-only trip.

Spain is truly one of our favorite countries. There are so many great things to do in Spain with teenagers , making the country perfect for a senior trip.

From its vibrant city of Madrid to the architectural wonder that is Barcelona, your senior will love the food, culture, and overall vibe that is Spain.

The city of Madrid is a great senior trip idea

Madrid is definitely the easiest city to base out of in Spain. The city itself has so much to see and do for teenagers .

We have loved and explored so many European cities with our teen, from Antwerp to Lucerne , but Madrid is still top of our list because of its location, culture and relative affordability.

In Madrid there are cultured experiences at the world-famous art museum, The Prado, and more teenager-focused experiences like the amusement park, Parque de Atracciones.

Our 4-day Madrid itinerary will help you plan your time.

However, one of the great advantages of Madrid is its high-speed trains. Whether it is the medieval city of Toledo or the seaside city of Barcelona, all of Spain can be easily accessed by train from Madrid.

In Madrid city center, there is also a unique Art Seven Hostel Capsules , where your senior can rent their own capsule to sleep. Yep, you heard it right…a capsule. Making Madrid specifically a great place in Spain for a first-timer trip with friends.

If you do choose Spain or most other European countries, be aware that the legal drinking age is 18 . In Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, and Belgium the drinking age is lower.

Budget Senior Trip Ideas

Out here in the West, a weekend camping trip is the way our own senior students celebrate their graduation as a class.

Camping is the perfect senior trip in that it allows students to use their own transportation and no accommodations are needed beyond that old, trusty, nylon tent.

And is there a better place to say your goodbyes, then out under the stars with a fire roaring and that one talented friend playing away on her acoustic guitar?

While everyone loves to spend a night away, day trips are another great budget choice for seniors to celebrate with friends.

In our town of Boise, Idaho, graduating classes can drive a few hours to 470 foot sand dunes at Bruneau State Park or head to Lucky Peak Reservoir to spend the day at the lake.

A great day trip is less than a 2 hour drive, but has a different feel than the everyday. For coastal places, a day trip could be an all-class trip to the ocean. For those in the West, it could be a day in a National Park.

Staycations

It really isn’t about the distance, but the memories. And staycations are a great chance to organize a trip to make some final memories. Some of our graduating classes senior staycations have included:

  • Indoor Laser Tag
  • The Area Zoo
  • Miniature Golf

This list is also great for “senior skip day,” but don’t tell anyone that this teacher promoted that tradition.

A senior trip is a great way to celebrate this important milestone in your child’s life. Whether it is a friends-only trip or a family affair, making memories through travel is always, always a good idea.

class trip destinations

Need other ideas for best travel gifts for teenagers . We have 60+ ideas for every type of teen.

Should I take a senior trip with friends if I am 17?

There are many travel restrictions for minors, including booking a hotel and using a rideshare. Traveling without your parents once you turn 18 eases many of those restrictions.

Minors who want to plan a senior trip might consider traveling locally.

Are senior trips only with friends?

While senior trips are traditionally thought to be trips or events for graduates and their peers, more and more families are taking senior trips with their graduates to commemorate the event.

New York City Class Trip

New York City reigns supreme as a top destination for class trips and performance groups.  There’s so much to see and do, it’s hard to squeeze it all in.  Here are just a few highlights…

Rockefeller Center

Rockefeller Center is great for student groups.  It’s a one stop shop for the best of NYC.  The observation deck at Top of the Rock is usually less crowded than the Empire State Building and offers a stunning, unobstructed view of the city.  The NBC Studios tour is popular with students and tons of fun.  If traveling during the winter months, a stop at the ice rink is a must.  If traveling during the holidays, the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center is a spectacular must-see!

One World Observatory

One World Observatory at the Westfield World Trade Center is another favorite stop.  SkyPod elevators climb 102 stories in 42 seconds for a view like none other!

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum offers a rare opportunity for the youth of today to interact with the heroes of the past.  Precious few years remain that will allow younger generations to spend time face to face with those who served on ships like the Intrepid.  Capture these teachable moments before they slip away.

Lower East Side Tenement Museum and Ellis Island

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is a landmark building that tells the story of immigrants to New York City between the 19 th and 21 st centuries through the personal experiences of those who lived here.  Couple this experience with a trip to Ellis Island to help students understand the role of immigration in our nation’s evolving identity.

Staten Island Ferry

If you want a great harbor view (and photo op!) of the Statue of Liberty , take your students on the Staten Island Ferry .  Leaving approximately every 20 minutes from Battery Park, the free ferry takes you right past the Statue.

Dough and DeKalb Market

NYC has some“sweet” spots.  A favorite is “Dough,” located in Brooklyn and the Flatiron District .  Dough is known for its legendary and mouthwatering doughnuts.  DeKalb Market in Brooklyn is also a great option for all kinds of local flavor – students can taste a little bit of everything!

Manhattan Concert Productions

Your ensemble can perform on stage in famous venues with exceptional guest faculty when you collaborate with Manhattan Concert Productions .  They offer experiences you won’t find anywhere else, including the following: Symphonic Series New York City Jazz Festival Masterwork Series These are just a few of the performance possibilities offered through Manhattan Concert Productions, whose goal is to help your group shine brightly in a professional and supportive setting.

The Town Hall has a 1500 seat theatre and hosts thousands of students each year.  It’s designated a National Historic Landmark because of the important role it played during the women’s suffrage movement – a unique way to combine history and performance in a place where there’s “not a bad seat in the house.”

Broadway Classroom and Disney Theatrical Workshop

If your goal is to make your students more comfortable and confident on stage, you may want to consider a workshop experience like Broadway Classroom or Disney Theatrical Workshop. Broadway Classroom is a series of workshops designed to engage students in the disciplines of theatre.  Popular workshops include Broadway basics, music, choreography and staging, the business of a Broadway career, professional Q & As and an anti-bullying themed class.  Workshops are typically 90 minutes and are held in the Broadway rehearsal studios. If your group wants to dig a little deeper into the art of the theatre, try a Disney Theatrical Workshop .  Running at an itinerary-friendly 90 minutes, these workshops are led by expert Disney Teaching Artists and allow the group to explore the mechanics of a performance – from on stage to behind the scenes.

Our itineraries are just a starting point for your adventure.  We work directly with you to create a student trip that’s perfect for your group.  If you want a unique performance or learning experience, we make it happen. Do you need to change days or add an attraction?

9 Graduation Trip Ideas for Every Budget

A graduation vacation is about more than knocking back drinks in a foreign land. Such adventures can also offer moments of reflection on what lies ahead. Choosing how to spend this milestone trip isn’t easy, either. In addition to setting a budget and choosing your travel companions, recent grads should consider what they want to get out of the trip, advises Shelby Albo, travel consultant at Embarc Collective . Here, we’ve pulled together nine unforgettable graduation trip ideas that appeal to a range of travel styles—no matter what your budget is.

The other Southeast Asia loop

“Backpacking trips in a foreign country are truly unbeatable, especially for graduation,” says Jen Richardson, a travel planner at Scouted . We all know the classic loop through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and it’s a great one—the region is affordable for travelers spending U.S. dollars and there is no shortage of cultural sites, natural wonders, and lively parties. But you can find all of that and more on a less-traveled path farther south.  In Indonesia, visit the bustling capital of Jakarta, scooter between rice fields in Ubud, and kick back on the postcard-perfect islands of Lombok and Bali . Experience a mix of cultures in Malaysia by tasting laksa curry on the streets of Penang and visiting the Hindu temples in the Batu Caves, then swing down to Singapore . It isn’t cheap by any stretch, but a few days in the street food capital—which has colorful architecture, lush hiking trails, and a high-tech airport with a butterfly garden and movie theater—are worth the end-of-trip-splurge.

A weekend (or longer) in Puerto Rico

The Commonwealth is an easy flight from much of the U.S., and you don’t even need a passport. If you have just a weekend, book an Airbnb in one of the candy-colored colonial buildings of Old San Juan, where reggaeton and salsa fill the streets and the Bad Bunny–approved cocktail bar La Factoría comes alive seven nights a week. If you have five to seven days to explore, plan a multi-stop road trip around the island—surfing on the West Coast, night kayaking in one of Puerto Rico's three bioluminescent bays, and baking on the dazzling white sands of Culebra Island.

South India immersion

You want to go far, but you don’t want to go alone: Intrepid Travel’s group trips are built around this premise, with accessible price points always front of mind. The outfitter’s two-week Real South India trip (from $909 per person) is a great graduation trip idea—it takes up to 16 free spirits (ages 18 to 29) from Hyderabad to Kochi, with five stops and two overnight trains in between. See Bollywood film sets in Ramoji Film City, explore Hindu temples in Mamallapuram, observe elephants and tigers in Bandipur National Park, and feast on stuffed dosa in Madurai. The rate covers guides, accommodations, select meals, and numerous activities; set your Google Flights tracker now for a stellar airline deal.

The Utah parks circuit

Grab a few pals and pile into a van to go park-hopping in Utah . The state’s national parks and monuments promise slot canyons ( Zion and Grand Staircase-Escalante), forests of rock hoodoos ( Bryce Canyon ), sand dunes (at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park), and bright red rock carved by the Colorado River (Canyonlands), to name just a few of the Beehive State’s otherworldly landscapes. Spend your days hiking and evenings camping under the stars—the Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park is worth planning around—in settings so stunning, they'll stick with you for a lifetime.

A sunny Caribbean cruise

After years of grinding, you might be ready to simply laze in the sun—a true treat-yourself moment before starting college or before your first job begins. Book a spot on a Caribbean cruise , which will have space for all of your friends and won’t require you to lift a single finger once you are onboard. Royal Caribbean offers a huge selection of affordable cruises departing from New York, Florida, and Galveston, Texas. Go for one of the five-night options , which stop in the crystalline waters of Cozumel, Mexico, and George Town, Grand Cayman, and offer plenty of nightlife and poolside entertainment options to keep things interesting.

Southern U.S. road trip

For a memorable American road trip, make the drive from Atlanta to West Texas , with stops in New Orleans and Austin en route. You’ll find music and nightlife all along the way—Atlanta’s Trap Music Museum and Second Line parades weaving through the streets of NOLA are not to be missed—plus roadside photo ops (hello, Marfa Prada store ). Scrimp by staying at Airbnbs in each destination; if you’re traveling with just a friend or two, rented rooms, instead of private apartments, are a great way to meet other travelers. Staying at locally owned properties is "such a good way to support the local culture and will make for a rich experience,” says Richardson.

A tour through South America

This may not be among the first graduation trip ideas that come to mind, but why not put those years of Spanish to use in South America? While the distances are greater than those in Southeast Asia, and the prices somewhat higher, sticking to the northwestern edge of the continent will give you the best bang for your buck. Plus, “planes are super affordable,” says Katalina Mayorga, founder of El Camino Travel , thanks to new budget lines such as Viva Air Colombia and Star Perú.  In four to eight weeks, you can hit the Caribbean coast in Colombia (with stops in Cartagena and Tayrona National Natural Park); the Andean cities of Medellín , Quito , and La Paz ; and ogle natural wonders like the Amazon rain forest (best accessed via Iquitos, Peru), the Uyuni salt flats of southwest Bolivia, and, of course, Machu Picchu . From learning about Afro-Caribbean dance to touring Inca archaeological sites, you’ll have loads to talk about with the fellow travelers you meet in hostels along the way.

Eastern Europe backpacking trip

“European backpacking trips are still very popular,” says Albo. “The ease of traveling from one country to another is an attractive aspect.” Not only is Eastern Europe more affordable than France, Spain, and Italy, it’s less crowded than its western neighbors—despite offering just as many reasons to visit. In dreamy Old World cities like Prague and Budapest , regal churches and castles are just as appealing as the edgy nightlife scenes. (Want to party in a converted bunker? Done.) By train or bus, get out to the scenic countryside and hike the Tatras mountains that border Slovakia and Poland before exploring the quaint old town of Gdańsk. Trust us—you’ll leave wondering why the rest of your friends haven’t considered Eastern Europe yet.

The Camino de Santiago

There’s something enticing about marking one milestone with another. For travelers who want to do it in hiking boots , a Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is an ideal challenge. The Camino refers to a network of trails that all lead to a shrine of Saint James the Great in Galicia, Spain, with several starting points throughout the country. Beginners, however, are recommended to follow the Camino Frances route, which begins just over the border in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. The journey takes 30 to 35 days and includes overnights in albergues (bed-and-breakfasts). If you find yourself needing a little motivation along the trail, just visualize the tapas and vino waiting for you each night.

Just wanted to let everyone know how great it was to work with Four Winds Tours and especially Rishi Kumar. We took 40 high school seniors to Boston, MA on a college tour trip in March 2023. We went to see Northeastern University; Boston University and Harvard. The tours were very informative and everything was planned perfectly. Our driver was exceptional and tuned into the students with what they would like as far as music and sights. His name was Fun, and he definitely was. He was so accommodating and friendly, that it was like he was on the trip … --Louise B Leon M. Detroit judge taken off docket after handcuffing teen who fell asleep in his courtroom during field trip

A Detroit judge has been removed from the docket days after he placed a 15-year-old girl in handcuffs after she fell asleep in his courtroom during a summer field trip.

On Tuesday, a Detroit-based nonprofit organization, the Greening of Detroit, took a group of minors to Judge Kenneth King's courtroom in 36th District Court so they could learn more about the legal happenings in the courtroom.

As the day unfolded, King "chose to make an example of a 15-year-old girl in front of her peers," Colleen Robar, the PR representative for the Greening of Detroit, said in a statement Tuesday.

"He made her wear handcuffs and a jail uniform and yelled at her for falling asleep in his courtroom," Robar said in the statement. "Although the Judge was trying to teach a lesson of respect, his methods were unacceptable."

Robar said that if the judge was unhappy with the conduct of the minors in the courtroom, he should have simply asked them to leave.

Following "a swift and thorough internal investigation," King was removed from his docket and will "undergo the necessary training to address the underlying issues that contributed to this incident," Chief Judge William McConico said in a statement Thursday.

The nonprofit group, which works to improve the infrastructure and landscaping in Detroit, said Tuesday that it had spoken with the teen and her mom and that "the young lady was traumatized by the Judge's unnecessary disciplinary treatment and scolding."

King did not respond to a request for comment from NBC News. He told WXYZ-TV of Detroit it wasn't the teen’s falling asleep that prompted him to censure her. "It was her whole attitude and her whole disposition that disturbed me," he said, adding that his goal was to "get through to her" and teach her how serious it is to be in a courtroom.

"That's not something that normally happens. But I felt compelled to do it because I didn't like the child's attitude," King told the station. "I haven't been disrespected like that in a very long time."

King also threatened the teen with time at the juvenile detention facility, according to video of the court livestream obtained by WXYZ. He ended up letting her go.

Latoreya Till, the mother of the teen who was punished in court, told NBC News she is glad the story is making headlines because often when people speak out against those in power, it is swept under the rug.

Till said her daughter is having trouble understanding why the judge would "do that to her," and has been having trouble sleeping and eating since the incident.

She said her daughter was so tired Tuesday because the pair have been jumping between housing and had gotten to the place where they were staying late the night before.

Asked about King's removal from the docket, Till said, "That’s a lesson learned for him."

"He was trying to prove a point to my daughter and make an example out of her in front of, you know, her peers. So, you know, that’s how it goes," Till said.

He is "supposed to show love and sympathy and implement the law, and he didn’t do none of that," she said.

In a statement Wednesday, Chief Judge Pro Tem Aliyah Sabree acknowledged "the concerning events" the day before.

"The 36th District Court does not condone the actions taken by Judge King, and the conduct displayed does not reflect the standards we uphold at the 36th District Court," Sabree said. "I am committed to addressing this matter with the utmost diligence."

In announcing the decision to remove King from the docket, McConico said Thursday that the court, "known as 'the people’s court,' remains deeply committed to providing access to justice in an environment free from intimidation or disrespect. The actions of Judge King on August 13th do not reflect this commitment."

McConico said the court routinely welcomes students "to observe and engage with the judicial process, aiming to provide valuable educational experiences and foster familiarity with the justice system."

"We sincerely hope that this incident does not undermine our longstanding relationships with local schools," he said.

After the decision to remove King was announced, the Greening of Detroit said in a new statement that it is "encouraged" by the court's decision and that it hopes "this disciplinary action will improve decision making and the treatment of all students who visit his court."

These airports make passengers walk the longest distances — sometimes more than two miles to your departure gate.

Get your steps in.

At some US airports, the adventure can begin long before you reach your destination — after finally making it through security, there’s actually getting to your gate, a journey that can involve up to two miles of walking, according to a revealing new ranking.

In other words, forget the gym — you’re getting a serious workout, just trying to get out of town.

Denver International Airport viewed from Westin Hotel window, featuring white tent-covered terminal, parking lot, and planes on the tarmac

And while many flight hubs offer helpful timesavers such as people movers, moving walkways, shuttle buses and trams, even these can still require a fair bit of good, old-fashioned footwork in between connections.

To see which airports truly put passengers through their paces, KURU Footwear took the measure of America’s airports, looking for the ones with the longest distances on foot — from ticketing to the farthest gate.

First reported by Reader’s Digest , here are the findings of the survey, which also polled 800 random travelers on their personal experiences.

Occupying 17,000 acres in the middle of one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, #1 in the rankings, is the definition of sprawling — research revealed that a passenger can wind up walking a whopping 2.16 miles just trying to get in or out of the gargantuan facility. Connecting here?

Leave time.

Next up is Washington-Dulles International Airport, where the swooping, mid-century terminal design and a nifty AeroTrain can’t solve all sprawl problems — passengers braving IAD can cover up to 1.62 miles just getting from A to B at this airport.

Packed with shopping and dining options, there’s only one problem the average traveler will face at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston — not enough time to stop and appreciate them, since they’ve got so far left to travel to their gate.

IAH is another airport where the transport options can’t save you from legging it at least part of the way.

Prepare to walk up to 1.52 miles, researchers said.

At number four is Denver International Airport, with distances of 1.45 miles on foot to reach the most remote departure areas, in some cases.

Meanwhile, New York’s JFK came in fifth — if there were more land to build on, you know they’d have made it bigger and even less user friendly, but at 1.38 miles, it’s still plenty big.

That is, if you can even get to your terminal, what with all the construction going on lately .

Of course, the Big Apple’s biggest airport has always been great at dishing out disappointment — the oft-hated hub ranked dead last on a recent list of airports for the stress it causes the average traveler.

A big part of that stress — the airport’s bottom-of-the-barrel rating for the amount of time planes are trapped on the tarmac waiting either to take off or get to their gate.

I spent over $2,000 to fly United Polaris, a 'reimagined' business class. It's only worth it for trips over 10 hours.

  • United Polaris had everything I needed to feel comfortable on a long-haul flight .
  • The service was great and the lie-flat seats were comfortable.
  • Although I enjoyed my experience, I would not upgrade for a flight less than 10 hours again.

Insider Today

I've flown business and first class on several airlines, but I didn't know what to expect on United Polaris from Newark, New Jersey, to Rome.

I'd seen online that the "reimagined" business class had comfy seats and great perks. When it first debuted seven years ago, it was even a finalist for the  Crystal Cabin Awards , an international award for cabin design innovation.

Still, I wanted to try it out for myself and I'd scored a discounted rate. My eight-hour flight on United Polaris cost $2,049 — about half of what it typically would have.

Here's what my flight was like.

United Polaris had everything I needed for a long flight

After boarding the plane, I learned my flight was delayed. I didn't mind since I had a glass of wine and could get cozy.

My pod contained Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, including a lightweight blanket, comforter, full-sized pillow, and small memory-foam cushion.

Polaris seats lie flat and have aisle access. A set of controls reclines the seat, raises the leg rest, and adjusts the lumbar support.

I'm 5'7" and had plenty of space to sit comfortably and lay fully flat.

A cabinet next to the armrest contained bottled water, a noise-canceling headset, and a large mirror. I also had USB ports, outlets for electronics, and a pop-out hook in case I wanted to hang anything up.

My ticket also came with an amenity kit designed to look like a small piece of luggage. It contained socks, tissues, a sleep mask, a toothbrush, and a few other items.

For entertainment, I had a 16-inch screen with United's international selection of movies, TV shows, podcasts, and music. Plus, my seat had a personal lamp and mini spotlight that were perfect to use for reading a book in a darkened cabin.

The bathrooms for Polaris passengers were large and stocked with specialty toiletries

There was never a line to get into one of two reserved Polaris bathrooms. Each had a sizable vanity with a full wash basin instead of the thin slice of sink found in most airplane toilets.

A countertop held a trio of bottles filled with hand cream, face mist, and a fabric-refresher spray — a now-favorite amenity I never knew I needed.

The food was not as good as I'd hoped

In Polaris, food was delivered on real plates — not disposable ones — alongside flatware and glassware. Fortunately, my pod's foldout table had plenty of room for my meals and free-flowing drinks.

I had an overnight flight , so a multicourse dinner was served about an hour after takeoff. I could choose one of four entrées: braised beef short rib with mushrooms, chicken and potatoes, turbot fish with kale, and spaghetti squash with zucchini.

I chose the short rib, and unfortunately, I felt it was overheated and got a little tough as it got cool enough to eat. It tasted like typical, salty airplane fare to me. I'd hoped my business-class dinner would be more impressive.

For dessert, I got a vanilla ice-cream sundae with chocolate fudge and brownie crumble that was pretty good.

My final meal on board was breakfast, about two hours before landing. I had a choice of an open-faced bagel with salmon, cream cheese, and chives or Belgian waffles with nuts and fruit.

I chose the bagel, and I appreciated getting a hearty meal before deboarding and starting the next step of my journey to downtown Rome.

My flight was great, but only trips over 10 hours justify the cost of Polaris

I enjoyed my flight on Polaris, but even with a delay, it didn't last long enough. With a strong tailwind, I was in Rome before I knew it, still feeling the wine I had upon boarding.

Between dinner and breakfast service, I had about three hours to wind down and relax. I enjoyed the comfortable seats, luxurious bedding, specialty toiletries, and superior service from the staff.

But although the upscale perks were nice, I wouldn't upgrade to United Polaris on a relatively short, eight-hour flight like this again.

It's a luxury I'd reserve for flights over 10 hours — and probably only if I could get another discounted rate.

Best Class Trip Ideas for 6th Graders

A class trip or even a field trip should be more than just educational but explorational. Students of all ages, but especially in the influential and sometimes-difficult middle school years, soak in their surroundings. Take them somewhere to discover new people, places, cultures, and customs. Help them find lifelong passions or rediscover interests as you take a revitalizing, interesting, and fun class trip getaway.

Discover and explore space through NASA's Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex where you can take extensive tours of the facility. Here is where many of the shuttles and rockets have been launched on NASA missions that have changed the face of the Space Race, and of our modern understanding of life beyond our little blue marble. However, there's plenty more to see once you've explored all NASA has to offer. Explore the towns along the Space Coast's narrow strip of land from Palm Bay to Cocoa Beach to Cape Canaveral, all of which have great shopping centers, museums, and attractions, plus the waves of the Atlantic to surf and bodyboard.

Savannah, GA

Steeped in history, rich in Southern culture, and best yet, affordable, Savannah is a jewel in the American South. This succulent city is absolutely gorgeous with drooping mossy oaks and perfectly planned city parks, including the world-renowned Forsyth Park. Films such as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil were set in Savannah, and based off one of its most notorious haunted houses. Famous individuals like Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts, was born in Savannah and today her house is open for tours. Set within easy driving distance of the Atlantic Ocean and Tybee Island, afternoon trips from Savannah to the sea are not only possible but recommended if only to visit the island's fort and lighthouse. With a city so rich in Civil War history, it'd be a shame not to visit with a student group.

There are many stunning wonders of New Mexico , from the ancient Native American Anasazi landmarks to the natural white gypsum sand dunes of White Sands National Monument. Visitors to New Mexico will be looking for adventure and discovery, though it helps if they enjoy outdoor recreation, exploring nature, and event photography. At places like Carlsbad Caverns, Tent Rocks National Monument, and the Bisti Badlands, loving the outdoors is almost a prerequisite for fun. If it's education you're looking for, try the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, one of the best in the country for examining the history of evolution from dinosaur fossils to the present day. Also in Albuquerque is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Petroglyph National Monument, and the National Museum of Nuclear Science.

Wisconsin Dells

Travel up north for a change of pace in the scenic and travel-worthy Wisconsin Dells. Originally made popular as a tourist destination, the Wisconsin Dells hasn't disappointed visitors with its multitudinous options from indoor waterparks to the first attraction, the Dells themselves. The Dells, free-standing rock formations and tributary canyons, lie along the Wisconsin River and make for perfect boat-side viewing. You may also find the many entertainment attractions interesting, from Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park to the Wizard Quest fantasy-themed maze complete with riddles. There are plenty more theme parks and waterparks where that comes from, but if you're wanting a little education stop by Tommy Bartlett Exploratory, a science center with wonderful interactive exhibits, or go exploring nature on your own at Mirror Lake State Park.

Built on the population influx from the 1849 Gold Rush, Sacramento went on to become the Golden State capital city. Parts of the city remain preserved from its Victorian gold mining days, such as Old Town Sacramento, the first established area of the city. Here you can find living history attractions, museums and galleries, plenty of delicious restaurants, and horse-drawn carriages. As the capital city, student groups are recommended to visit the beautiful and incomparable California State Capitol Building and take the free tour around the facility to see the legislature in action and in history. Also see the Governor's Mansion where President Reagan and his family resided when he was California's governor, as well as the Sacramento History Museum, and the Sacramento Zoo. Finally, you can't come to Sacramento and not visit Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park which preserves the site which started the entire Gold Rush, where James Marshall first struck gold in 1848.

There's plenty to see and do in the Windy City, depending on your intended interests. If you're looking for entertainment, then the Navy Pier is the place to be with carnival attractions, a laser tag arena, performance stadiums, and even a Crystal Gardens conservatory on top of the pier. Education meets entertainment at the Shedd Aquarium, the largest all indoor aquarium, and the Field Museum of Natural History, home to Sue the T-Rex, the largest and most complete fossil skeleton. Head over to the Museum of Science and Industry for something truly spectacular, as its the largest museum of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, and showcases the only German U-boat in America. Take a relaxing day in Hyde Park or Lincoln Park and visit the Botanical Gardens and famed Lincoln Park Zoo. There's so much to do in Chicago, and so much variety, that you'll have no problem finding something equally fun and educational.

Disneyland Resort

At first glance, you might think taking a class to Disneyland is a nice idea but neither practical nor educational. Know first that Disneyland offers youth programs that make it easier for groups of students to enjoy the park. Secondly, Disney Parks can be plenty of educational, if you focus on particular aspects of the park experience (See Educational Trips to Disney World here). But your students will be absolutely thrilled with the opportunity to visit the Happiest Place on Earth, where they can experience their favorite Disney characters in person, ride the Matterhorn and find 999 haunts in the Haunted Mansion. Plus, if you're staying in Los Angeles you can explore Hollywood, visit the beach at Santa Monica, and discover all the best landmarks of the City of Angels.

By Megan Harwood-Baynes, cost of living specialist

It was the dream Facebook notification.

In January 2021, Lorna Lyons was tagged in a post telling her she had won a £10,000 kitchen from The Range.

With appliance and fittings included, the mum of three was excited to replace "the heart of the family home" after entering the giveaway.

But three years on, their kitchen is condemned and the family cook their meals in an air fryer in the living room.

What went wrong?

Issues arose from the very beginning, Ms Lyons says.

First, she says, the designer tried to pressure her into accepting a white kitchen - something completely unpractical for the cooking fan in a household of three boys.

"I told her I don't want to spend all day up to my armpits in bleach cleaning the kitchen," Ms Lyons, 43, told Sky News. Eventually, The Range Kitchens (at the time branded as Jonas & James) agreed to design her a navy blue kitchen.

Then, she says, the designer measured wrong, with the wrong items being sent out - they were promised a dishwasher which didn't fit. When installing the kitchen in May 2022 (delayed due to the pandemic), she says the fitter damaged several drawers and doors, but while replacements were ordered, they never materialised.

Within a year, their brand-new hob had cracked, but after their pleas to The Range went unanswered they decided to order a new one themselves. But when it arrived, a different kitchen fitter refused to install it, telling them everything in the kitchen had been wired wrong and all the electrics were unsafe.

Instead of each appliance being housed within its own junction box, they were all taped together in one bundle.

I reached out to James Watkins, who posts on Instagram as Jimbo the Electrician, to see exactly what risks this could pose (he had no involvement in the installation - but gave me his expert opinion).

He told me: "So looking at the photo there are a few issues that I can see: Single insulated cables on show (Code 2 - potentially dangerous). No adequate enclosure with tape being used and terminals accessible without the use of a tool (Code 2).  Overall workmanship very poor."

This, he said, could potentially lead to an electric shock.

Correspondence shared with Sky News shows Ms Lyons has repeatedly contacted The Range about the issues with her kitchen, but no solution has been forthcoming.

"I am struggling mentally and emotionally, I am just drained. I feel as if I am getting nowhere," the NHS call handler said.

Sky News contacted the Range about the issue.

A spokesperson said: "We're sorry to hear that Ms Lyons is having an issue with her kitchen which was installed in good faith using an independent installer in 2022.

"This issue has only just been bought to our attention and we plan to investigate the matter fully."

But Ms Lyons says she has not heard from the company in more than two weeks.

What rights do competition winners have?

Generally speaking, if a contract is involved, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives people certain statutory rights when goods are supplied to them by a business.

But, whether there is a contract will depend on the circumstances. If something is completely free, and the consumer doesn't have to give or do anything in return, then the Consumer Rights Act 2015 may not apply.

But if it does, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 goods should be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and match their description. If a business also agrees to install the goods it is supplying or agrees to arrange for them to be installed as part of the contract, then it must ensure that the goods are installed correctly.

Where consumers' statutory rights are breached, someone may have a legal right to a solution under consumer law, such as a right to a repair or replacement. Depending on the circumstances, someone might be able to bring a claim under the general law for damage caused to their property (even if there isn't a contract), but they should seek independent legal advice before doing so.

Anyone who experiences an issues with the prize from an advert should speak to Citizen's Advice for further help.

Parents with children turning 16 have until the end of the month to ensure they keep receiving child benefit.

The money may still be available to you if your child is in full-time education or training, but it's not automatic.

You need to let HM Revenue and Customs know whether this is the case by 31 August.

Training is limited to unpaid work and traineeships, and approved types of education do not include BTEC Higher National Certificate qualifications or a university degree.

The benefits will come to a stop once your child finishes their education at one of four points during the year nearest to that date: February, May, August or November.

Child benefit can be extended in some circumstances, such as if they join the armed forces.

Claiming the benefit has the added bonus of earning you national insurance credits to put towards your state pension if you are earning less that £123 a week.

Holland Barrett is trialling the world's first express DNA test service at some stores in the UK.

The retailer will offer customers on-the-spot genetic information for skincare and improved sleep in five stores across the UK, Retail Week reports.

Testing will involve a £30 cheek swab and results will be sent securely to a customer's smartphone in just 20 minutes.

The service is being provided by medical and consumer genetics testing firm DnaNudge.

The stores where the testing will be available are in Chelmsford, Bluewater, Birmingham Bullring, Princes Street Edinburgh, and Queen Street Oxford.

A savvy loophole allows Britons to save £75 on both National Trust and English Heritage membership at the same time.

The hack involves buying an annual Heritage New Zealand pass as an "overseas resident", which not only grants access to historical sites in New Zealand, but also the UK and other countries.

That's thanks to a "reciprocal agreement" with the National Trust and English Heritage that unlocks access to hundreds of their tourist hotspots.

Given the National Trust increased its prices by more than twice the rate of inflation (8.5%) this year, this saving hack is particularly helpful for those looking to purchase a membership.

UK residents can buy a non-Kiwi membership from Heritage New Zealand for just £128. Purchasing passes separately from English Heritage and National Trust combined would cost £163.20 – a difference of just over £35.

Savings become greater for families, with a New Zealand Heritage membership costing £210. For the two English Heritage and National Trust family passes, it would cost £285 - a £75 increase.

After signing up, your Kiwi heritage card will be sent in the post and you can show it upon entry at all English Heritage and National Trust sites.

However, the Kiwi card does not cover parking, meaning you will need to pay for this on the day.

Terms and conditions on the New Zealand Heritage website reveal that Wakehurst, Sussex, which is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, is the only National Trust-owned property where free entry is denied.

The Kiwi card also unlocks access to international heritage sites in Italy, Germany, Canada, and South Korea.

Waitrose has announced plans to open up to 100 new convenience shops over the next five years.

The shops will be the first openings in six years for the supermarket chain and are part of a £1bn investment.

The money will be spent on launching new stores and improving 150 existing shops - almost half of Waitrose supermarkets.

It is also transforming a store in London's Finchley Road to trial new services, product offerings and concept upgrades over the next year before a new blueprint for Waitrose shops is unveiled in 2025.

Waitrose customers can expect:

  • More meat and fish counters
  • Chilled beer and wine departments
  • Collaborations with third parties such as Crosstown doughnuts

The chain also says it will respond to local demand. For example, "Finchley Road has given more space to top sellers including adding a second dry aged beef cabinet and dedicated parmesan section - 12% of Waitrose parmigiano counter sales come from the one store".

Too many insurance companies lack the systems to provide a good service for customers, the financial conduct regulator has said.

Criticism of the price of insurance premiums prompted the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to pause the sale of some insurance products sold by certain firms.

The regulator had concerns customers weren't getting fair value.

While progress is being made, the FCA says, it is "still seeing too many examples of insurers and brokers lacking the right information, governance, or oversight to ensure their customers get consistently good outcomes".

If insurers can't prove products provide fair value, the FCA says it will "take appropriate regulatory action".

One in four Britons fear they could be forced to turn off their heating and hot water this winter due to an expected rise in energy bills, a survey suggests.

The proportion who said they may be forced to take such action increased to 31% for households with children and 39% for bill payers on a low income, according to the survey from Citizens Advice.

The charity said it was helping record numbers of people with energy debt "even in the height of summer".

It warned that "without urgent intervention from the government, households will continue to face impossible choices and drastic cutbacks to be able to afford to heat their homes".

The survey found 48% of respondents said they would have to turn their heating or hot water down or off.

And 34% said they would have difficulty affording food or other essentials, such as their mortgage, rent or childcare - while 7% said they would be forced to skip meals.

Energy regulator Ofgem is set to confirm a new energy price cap for October to December on Friday - which experts predict will rise by 9%.

Citizens Advice said 7% of households (nearly five million people) are in debt to their energy supplier, a figure that rises to more than 14% of households with children under 18.

It said the predicted price cap increase of £150 would pull a further 187,000 people into a negative budget - equivalent to the population of Bournemouth.

The share price slide for BT continued today. It topped the leader board as the biggest price faller in the FTSE 100, with shares down 1.36%.

Yesterday, an estimated £1bn was wiped from the company's value after an internet network rival CityFibre struck a deal with broadband supplier Sky, the owner of Sky News.

It means Sky will use CityFibre's network, rather than Openreach, to offer its services starting next year.

Sky is the largest third-party broadband provider on Openreach, with around 5.7 million customers.

Citi's analysts, however, said they believed the financial impact for BT was manageable, noting that Sky would maintain its long-term relationship with BT's Openreach given the significantly larger size of its network.

CityFibre has plans to expand to eight million premises, challenging the dominance of BT's national Openreach network and Virgin Media O2's second ranked network. It is backed by Goldman Sachs and Antin Infrastructure Partners.

The oil price is this week back below $80 a barrel which should make refilling a car cheaper in about a week to 10 days' time. The benchmark oil price, a barrel of Brent crude, is $77.36, cheaper than for most of the last year.

One pound is equal to €1.1708, down from the highs of July but better than early this month. Against the dollar, sterling is strong, buying $1.3026 - the highest in more than a year.

Ed Conway , our data and economics editor, has warned there is a "lot of bad news to come" as Labour try to get a grip of the UK's finances.

Earlier, we reported that government borrowing rose to its highest amount since the pandemic in July, with public sector spending on the rise.

But Conway is clear most of this pre-dates the Labour government.

"What it's showing is the state of public finances is not actually terribly good," he says.

"Having spoken to people in government, they are going to be raising taxes, they are going to be cutting spending.

"What we are going to hear about in the budget that is coming up at the end of October is frankly going to be quite miserable.

"It's going to be quite grim."

He adds: "There's going to be a lot of bad news to come, I'm afraid."

A reminder the prime minister and chancellor have vowed not to raise income tax, national insurance or VAT.

Reports in the Guardian and Mirror newspapers suggest the chancellor may look to raise more from inheritance tax and capital gains tax, among other measures like not scrapping the two-child benefit cap.

Signs that the upward movement on rents is finally easing have been reported by Zoopla.

In research commissioned by the BBC , the property website found "the recent boom in rent rises for new lets is coming to an end".

Across the country, rents have risen by 1.6% over the last six months - way down from the 11% we saw overall in 2022 and 8% in 2023.

Zoopla expects this year's overall figure to come in at between 3-4%.
