Do I need to have a driver’s license to rent a car from Hertz Car Rental - Hertz Location De Voitures - Tours, Saint Pierre Des Corps - Tgv Railway Station?

At the time of rental the driver must present a valid national driver's license, which has been held for at least 12 months. Please note, Declarations of lost/stolen driving licences are not accepted, provisional, probationary, dematerialised, damaged or altered licences are NOT accepted.

For all Non-European Union renters whose driver's licenses are not issued in roman script, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation is mandatory. The IDP translates the national driver's licence into various languages and is not accepted without the national licence.

Foreigners that have been living in France for more than a year will need to present a national driver's license issued in France or any other European Union country, as well as a valid passport or European Union identity card.

Driver's licences issued by the People's Republic of China/ Japan/ Korea   may be accepted provided you present an official  Hertz Certification  form. Hertz China/ Japan/ Korea will issue this form on  Hertz  notepaper and will incorporate the  Hertz  China/ Japan/ Korea Corporate seal. A scanned copy of the original licence will appear on the Certification form. The Certification form is valid until the expiry date of the Driver's Licence. Both the Certification and the original licence (with an International Driving Permit strongly recommended by Police authorities in Europe) MUST be produced at the time of rental.

If you hold a Driver's Licence issued in  Vietnam , you need to present the original licence together with an authorised translation issued by the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport. If both documents are presented at time of rental these licences are acceptable worldwide.

For the following vehicle groups you must present a valid national driver's license held for  at least 3 years :

For campers, a national driver's license held for  more than 5 years  must be presented.

If you refill the fuel tank, please do so within 15km of where you return the vehicle, and keep your receipt as you will need to present it to our team.

If you do not take our Fuel Purchase Option (FPO) – see  Fuel Policy  for details - and do not return the vehicle with a full tank of fuel, we will fill the tank for you and charge you for the costs we incur and the service we provide in doing so. Our costs include purchasing, storing and managing our own fuel supplies, or refilling the tank off site, plus manpower and administration costs. Our service, of course, saves you from taking the time to find a local fuel station and refilling the vehicle yourself. The refuelling charge for your rental will be calculated as follows:

• 2.1 x weekly pump price taken from the EU Commission Energy website plus € 15.00 (including tax) service charge.

 We will show the actual cost of refuelling on your rental agreement when you pick up your vehicle.

Electric vehicles :

Hertz will record the vehicle battery charge at the start of the rental. Failure to return the vehicle in the same state of charge as at pick-up will result in a recharging fee per missing kWh.

On this page you'll find a beginner's guide to the few remaining European motorail services of interest to UK travellers.  First up, here's a reality check...

Normal passenger trains don't carry cars or motorbikes, just passengers and sometimes bicycles.  Only special Motorail trains carry cars & motorbikes, on car transporters attached to the train.

Motorail trains are an endangered species.  They run on a dwindling handful of holiday routes, often summer-only and usually only once or twice a week, see the motorail route map below .  All French Motorail trains from Calais were discontinued in 2010, Dutch Auto Slaap Trein from the Netherlands was discontinued in 2014, German DB Autozug discontinued in 2015, French Auto Train discontinued 2019.  There are no motorail trains within the UK either, as these ceased in 1995.  The remaining routes of interest to UK users are shown on the motorail route map below .

You must first take a ferry across the Channel, as motorail trains do not use the Channel Tunnel, they start at Düsseldorf in Germany.  Motorail trains carry cars, motorbikes, small trailers & roof boxes, on some routes you can now take some over-height 4x4 vehicles & people carriers.  However, they can't carry big 4X4s, vans, caravans or campers, as these are too high.

How do I get my car from the UK to ...?

Auto-Train :  SNCF (French Railways) used to offer an all-year-round Auto-train service from Paris to Avignon, Marseille, Toulon, St Raphael, Nice.  However, Auto-Train was discontinued completely from December 2019...

Urlaubs-Express motorail from Düsseldorf to Verona :  German charter train company Urlaubs-Express ( www.urlaubs-express.de ) runs Düsseldorf-Verona overnight with sleeping-cars, couchettes and car transporter wagons.  It did not run 2020-2022, should have run May-September 2023 on most Fridays southbound, most Saturdays northbound, but didn't, see the information below .  It now won't run in 2024.

Düsseldorf is only a 3h45 drive from Calais or a 2h30 drive from Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam or IJmuiden where the ferries from Harwich, Hull & Newcastle arrive. 

They run an overnight motorail from Düsseldorf to Innsbruck on some dates, you can drive from Innsbruck to Italy via the scenic Brenner Pass, Innsbruck to Verona is 274 km (170 miles) and takes just over 3h by car.

Austrian Railways (ÖBB) Dusseldorf to Innsbruck (for Italy) used to run a motorail from Dusseldorf to Innsbruck for much of the year, but from 2021 the sleeper train to which the car transporters were attached has been extended to runs to/from Amsterdam with another portion to/from Brussels, and motorail car wagons are no longer attached.

Spain & Portugal

Belgium, netherlands, luxembourg, switzerland.

There are no motorail trains to Switzerland, the only option is to drive from the channel ports all the way.  The 3-times-a-week Auto-Train service from Paris to Geneva was withdrawn in 2010.

Germany & Austria

Denmark, sweden, norway, finland, eastern europe including turkey & greece, north africa , cyprus, malta, egypt, israel, within the uk, to scotland & cornwall ....

Urlaubs Express Düsseldorf - Verona

IMPORTANT UPDATE 2024:  The Düsseldorf-Verona motorail didn't run in 2020-2022, it was supposed to run in 2023 May to September, most Fridays southbound, Saturdays northbound.  However, problems with staffing in Italy meant they cancelled it.  It won't run in 2024 either.

The original and popular Autoslaaptrein company threw in the towel in April 2015, and another Dutch company, Treinreiswinkel, started its own Motorail train branded Auto Express Italia for summer 2016 & 2017.  They too threw in the towel, but German charter company, Urlaubs-Express ( urlaubs is German for holiday ) stepped in and ran a Düsseldorf-Verona motorail train weekly in summer 2018 & 2019, with sleepers, couchettes, restaurant car and car transporters.  Suspended during the pandemic, the Düsseldorf-Verona didn't resume in 2022 or 2023.

ÖBB Austrian Railways motorail

Düsseldorf in germany to innsbruck in austria:   discontinued in 2021, auto-train in france, paris to avignon, marseille, toulon, st raphael, nice:   discontinued december 2019.

The French Railways used to operate a domestic car-carrying service called Auto-Train, However, all services were discontinued in December 2019.

Optima Express

Villach in austria to edirne in turkey:  www.optimatours.de.

Optima Tours run their Optima Express motorail train at least weekly to Turkey on various departure dates between April & November, see www.optimatours.de for dates, times & online booking - you can select English top right.  Villach is in southeast Austria and Edirne is in Turkey near the Bulgarian border, so is also good for Bulgaria.  They carry motorbikes and cars up to 198cm high.

Times vary, so you'll have to check their site, but the journey from Austria to Turkey takes either 2 days & 1 night or 2 nights & 1 day.  The train has covered car-carrying wagons and Bulgarian couchette cars, with compartments that can be used for sole occupancy for 1-6 people, or you can book one berth in a shared 6-berth compartment.

They take cars up to 152cm high, or for a slightly higher price, vehicles up to 198cm high.

The cost is around €259 one-way for a car plus €149 for one person in a shared 6-berth couchette compartment or €299 per person in a couchette compartment allocated for the exclusive private use of two people.

Austrian Railways ÖBB's overnight Dusseldorf-Innsbruck motorail can be used to connect with it.
