Tour Director

Admire the iconic Great Wall of China

Feel the enormity of China's Great Wall, stretching as far as the eye can see through luscious green valleys. With some fragments built nearly 3000 years ago, the historical significance of this fortification is not to be missed. Tackle just a small length of this 21,000-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wander through Angkor Wat

Take a journey to the world's largest religious monument and watch the sunrise onto the stillness of the Angkor Wat temple complex. The crumbling mosey portions of the Hindu turned Buddhist structures hold an eerie beauty that will stir you to the very core.

Enjoy some quality 'Me' time in Thailand

Land of smiles, cheap cocktails and expert massages, a trip to Thailand is a chance to unwind. Spend days floating in the Gulf of Thailand and roaming through shopping markets, interrupted only by fragrant Panang curries and fresh coconuts to cool you down.

Sail Halong Bay

Climb aboard a traditional wooden boat and take in the beauty of Vietnam's sea of limestone islands. The dramatic setting of Halong Bay will dazzle as you drift slowly around the emerald waters past many families that call the water home. An essential part of Asia travel packages, it has been named one of the new natural wonders of the world.

Stroll down the busy streets of Tokyo

Home to almost 14-million, the streets of Tokyo buzz with an energy that is hard to resist. Navigate through the swarm of pedestrians at Shibuya Crossing and admire elaborate dress sense in Harajuku. Even those called by empty mountains will find joy in the scenes of Japan's capital.

Our top 5 things to do in Asia

This enormous content offers such a diverse banquet of experiences it can be hard to know where to begin. From the busy streets of Tokyo to the world's largest religious site found in Cambodia, we'll share the very best on our Asia vacation packages.

Temple of Heaven

The aptly named Temple of Heaven is a scene straight out of a mythical religious artwork. Stare up at the ceilings in the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests where a patchwork of color honors the seasons of the year. With construction finishing in the year 1420, this site holds limitless cultural significance.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

Pay tribute to the victims of Cambodia's brutal genocide that saw a quarter of its population lost in the early 1970's. The photos of those lost haunt the walls of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in a building that was once a center for prison and interrogation.

Tokyo National Museum

Take an artistic journey along the Silk Road to ancient and medieval days gone by at Tokyo National Museum, the 6th largest art museum in the world. Hosting many of Japan's national treasures and religious artworks with immense cultural significance, allow a whole day to soak up all this monument has to offer.

Best museums in Asia

A tapestry of history, art and modern culture are found peppered across this continent in its endless list of museums. These are just some of the places we'll visit on our Asia escorted tours.

With almost a thousand years of history held in a roll of seaweed, rice and raw fish, don't miss this important part of Japanese culture. Though it's now readily available in most parts of the world, you will find something special about the sushi experience in its homeland.

Pho has traveled a long way since it originated in the Nam Định province of Vietnam. Slurp down many bowls from lively street vendors and modern cafes, enjoying variations of the hot rice noodle broth covered in herbs. The country of Vietnam summed up in one soupy dish.

Peking Duck

Taste the Imperial era in slices of seasoned crispy skin duck. Best wrapped in thin pancakes with hoisin sauce and greens, this Chinese specialty is delicious whether consumed in a busy street market or upmarket restaurant.

Best food in Asia

It's hard to compete with the delicious fragrant dishes that originate across the expanses of Asia. With chopsticks in hand, we'll uncover the very best and learn of the many rituals and traditions woven into this continent's culinary banquet.

What to pack for Asia

People packing for a tour

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Charcoal tablets

Many visit Asia armed with a pharmacy of pills for the chance of illness. Prevention is always better than cure; take a natural daily supplement such as charcoal to ensure nasties are evacuated from your system as quickly as possible.

Cool full-length clothes

Many parts of Asia boast a sunny tropical climate that's perfect for days flopped by a pool or sea. When exploring, it can be somewhat uncomfortable. Pack light, full-length clothes so you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Hand sanitizer

During your time in Asia, you might not always have access to soap and water to wash up before eating. Keep hand sanitizer available for clean hands and a happy stomach.

Insect Repellent

A bug spray will be your best protection against mosquitos and any other creepy crawlies that call Asia home. Pack a bottle to avoid unnecessary itch or illness.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Asia Tours & Vacations

People drinking, having fun and smiling in Asia

Welcome to Asia, the most populous, energetic and contradictory continent on earth.

Across one vast landmass you will find almost everything. Sci-fi skyscrapers in Japan , whitewashed mountain monasteries, honking moped shoals and silent Taoist temples, neon cityscapes and saffron-clad monks bent in prayer. If you’ve come for the familiar, you’re in for a surprise. You can munch deep-fried grasshoppers with white pepper in Thailand. Ride across the Mongolian tundra. Explore the rice paddy fields in Bali.  Swim with Burmese sea-gypsies. You will begin to understand - this place is where ordinary goes to die.

In Japan, some things just make sense. Like traveling 200mph on an electric bullet train from Tokyo to the “Kitchen of Japan” – Osaka. Or sleeping in a Japanese monastery and learning cultural traditions from English speaking monks. From fresh sushi and warm tea to ancient shrines and Ama divers – there’s so much history to discover when you go off the beaten path and experience a culture like never before. There’s something for everyone in Japan. The only thing it’s missing is you.

asia Thailand MustSee

Anyone who’s visited Thailand will attest to the bustling modern cities, ornate ancient temples, and stunning jungle beaches. Travel down the busy metropolitan roads of Bangkok by tuk tuk. Explore the city and see intricate colored tiles and golden statues surrounding Buddhist shrines. This destination is a true melting pot waiting to be discovered by travelers.

Asia ms2

Vietnam is a beautiful and exotic country that simply begs for exploration. It’s home to some of the healthiest, tastiest foods you’ll ever have, but the sights and sounds are just as big and beautiful as the flavors. From seascapes of limestone islands to incredible cave systems in nature and a bustling and colorful population, Vietnam is sure to keep you interested.

Asia ms3

India is many things all at once. It dazzles the senses with color and sound and smell. It touches the soul with spirituality, tradition and ritual. It surprises visitors with its spontaneity and controlled chaos. It’s a place unlike any other and all who travel there should consider themselves very lucky indeed.

Destination Must-Do's

asia japan mustdo

Witness the art of traditional Ama pearl divers:

Believed to be a 2,000 year old practice, the Ama (海女 “sea women”) were known to dive for shellfish and seaweed. These fascinating women were honored for their findings and their tradition has since been included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Today, travelers can visit Ise-Shima, Japan to watch these skilled divers search the sea floor for shellfish and pearls.

Cook in Vietnam:

Traditional Vietnamese cooking is admired for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of dairy and oil, and focus on herbs and vegetables to create flavor. It’s healthy and delicious! Travel to Vietnam and enjoy a cooking demonstration with a local chef. Explore the regional cuisine as much as you can.

Asia md3

Visit the Taj Mahal in Agra, India:

The Taj Mahal in Agra is often called the greatest monument ever built to eternal love. It is considered the most aesthetically perfect structure in the world and is made entirely of brilliant white marble. The Taj Mahal was constructed by Shah Jahan, a forlorn emperor in memory of his favorite wife who died in childbirth. All who visit stand in total awe of its beauty and size.

Asia md4

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Sri Lanka:

Located in Kandy in the royal palace complex, this gilded temple is revered by Buddhists the world over. It is considered to be the place that holds the actual tooth of Buddha. The tooth itself plays an important political role since it is thought that whoever holds the tooth also holds political power.

The sands of the desert shift underfoot. The sun climbs high into the Egyptian sky. And the great Pyramids of Giza shimmer in the distance. There you stand in awe before the power and ambition of an inspiring civilization. In this legendary place, explore thousands of years of history while experiencing a thriving culture. Look to the past and keep an eye on the future – the great monuments reveal something different to each traveler. Discover the world of the ancient Egyptians as you visit one incomparable site after another.

Jordan is a destination of mesmerizing beauty and contrasts. Bordering on the Red and Arabian Seas, visitors can enjoy some romantic beach time, an exhilarating horseback ride along the sandy shores or perhaps relaxing in one of the many spas located near the waters. Whatever it is you might be looking for, Jordan’s history, culture and people are happy to make it as pleasant a stay for you as possible.

South Africa

South Africa is all about discovery, revitalizing your spirit and reinventing your thinking. Luxurious resorts, moving township visits, open-air safari game drives and vibrant cities like Cape Town; few destinations can offer such a myriad of enriching experiences. Already an up-and-coming destination, South Africa garnered tremendous worldwide recognition after successfully hosting the 2010 World Cup. Visitors from around the globe have spread the news of this beautiful nation. And now leisure travelers are moving it to the top of their wish-lists. You’ve made a wondrous choice.

India offers an abundance of cultural, historical, and spiritual treasures that satisfy even the most experienced and discerning traveler. India is filled with architectural masterpieces that include the Taj Mahal, and natural wonders like varied desert landscapes and the majesty of the Himalayas. Indian cuisine presents an intriguing blend of Asian and European influences, mixed with the region’s many spices, providing an adventure for the palette. From the many street side cafés, to the gourmet restaurants, setting out on a culinary tour of India must be placed high on any traveler’s list.

Vietnam, a nation with a long history, boasts a wealth of natural and cultural treasures. Vietnamese Buddhism has given rise to unbelievable religious structures. Rivers such as the Mekong run throughout the country, adorned with picturesque islands. Welcoming villages rest along their shores. Its street food has become a must for international foodies. Cities such as Hanoi bustle with energy and ancient places such as Hoi An welcome travelers. All told, Vietnam is simply a feast for the senses.

There is certainly a lot to smile about when you vacation in Thailand. Here, the Old World meets something entirely new. From temples to markets to food to waterways to beaches to nightlife, there is something to please everyone. As Thailand – a constitutional monarchy – is the only country in Southeast Asia to not have been colonized by Europeans, its cultural identity remains largely intact. And the Thai people, among the friendliest in the world, love to share their country with visitors. The only question is what not to see!

Welcome to Japan! This is a land of intriguing contradictions. Japan is an archipelago made up of more than 6,800 islands with three quarters of the land being either forest or mountains, leaving little for residential, industrial, or farming areas. Yet it is densely populated for its size. Its leaders have ranged from the samurai to the shogun to the emperor. Its highest point – Mt. Fuji – is beautiful and sacred, as are its many temples and shrines. Its capital city – Tokyo – is a bustling metropolis containing anything one might desire, from food to entertainment to art and culture. Kyoto is filled with serene religious buildings and glorious gardens. A Japan trip awaits with open arms!

Welcome to Israel—a land of contrasts and wonderful surprises. Join hundreds of years of voyagers who have flocked to this dynamic country. Ancient and modern, secular and sacred, Israel beckons visitors with its magnificent sites, holy places and warm Mediterranean climate. Here, age-old sacred shrines exist alongside futuristic skyscrapers and posh resorts with swaying palms alongside desert wasteland. No matter where you look, the legendary stories of mankind’s collective history come to life in this magnificent place.

Cultural Adventure Travel Asia vacations created by specialists

Asia vacation ideas.

The dream Asia vacation looks different for everyone, which is why no two trips we create look the same, either.

The itineraries you’ll find here are to fuel your inspiration: we want to spark your curiosity about what shape a cultural adventure across Asia might take, and get you excited about making it happen.

Maybe you’re dreaming of island hopping your way through Thailand’s tiny, white-fringed slices of paradise, or waking up at the crack of dawn to explore Cambodia’s ancient temples with just the birds for company.

Perhaps the perfect trip means munching your way through the very best street food Southeast Asia has to offer (and there’s a lot), getting up to your elbows making kimchi in South Korea, or meeting the gentlest of giants during a stay at a luxury, rainforest elephant sanctuary.

Or, you might not know what you’re looking for until you hear about it.

And that’s where our personal travel consultants come in. We’re here to ask the questions that help you work out what your perfect cultural adventure looks like – and then make it a reality.

Vietnam landscape

Vietnam's Landscapes

If you prefer country to city, we made this for you: packed with outdoors adventures in Vietnam’s most stunning scenery.

Best of South Korea

South Korea might not look big on a map, but over the course of almost two weeks, this trip will show you that its size doesn’t matter at all – there’s so much to see, and you’ll be hitting all the top spots.

Palm trees at sunset

Wild Thailand Family Adventure

This family trip has it all: tropical beaches, jungle adventure, hands-on culture and (best of all) elephants.

Asia experiences

From hiking the steep trails of Laos’ misty cloud forests to eating sea urchin freshly caught by Jeju Island’s female free divers, the best trips are made up of experiences that are special because they’re utterly unique to the destination you’re in.

Connecting with locals by taking cooking classes to learn recipes that go back generations, staying in thoughtfully designed eco-lodges built to connect you with nature, cruising slowly down the Mekong Delta as coconut boats bob by, or visiting tucked-away corner cafes that quietly serve the best coffee around – they're all experiences you won’t forget.

And that’s what our cultural adventures are all about. The experiences we’ve listed here give a snapshot of what’s possible when you travel with us. They’re ones you’ll tell your friends about, struggle to put into words, and think about when you’re planning your next trip.

Travel tips for Asia trips

Dreaming of an Asia vacation? There are many incredible spots to travel to on the world's biggest continent. Our guided tours of Asia can take you to many different countries including China, India, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Whether a particular time of year or a destination is driving your travel plans, we'll help you find the tour that's right for you.

The climate varies greatly from region to region in Asia. Japan is temperate throughout the year and experiences four seasons. The monsoon season lasts from July to September in India, and it also tends to be rainy during the summer in China. Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam are warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit Southeast Asia is from November through February, when the temperatures are slightly cooler.

On each of our Asia tours, you'll have an expert Tour Director with you every step of the way. Local guides will also join your group at different points throughout your journey to help you make the most of your trip.

Looking for the best places to visit in Asia? Here are some of the incredible spots you can explore on tour:

  • The Great Wall of China
  • Mount Fuji in Japan
  • Sukhothai Historical Park in Thailand
  • Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia
  • Ha Long Bay in Vietnam
  • The Taj Mahal in India

We offer Asia tour packages for every type of traveler. If you'd like to visit China, for example, you can take our 15-day China: Beijing, the Yangtze & Shanghai tour or opt for a shorter Highlights of China: Beijing to Shanghai tour . Vietnam & Angkor Wat tour is another popular option for adventurers drawn to Southeast Asia.

Experiencing a new destination's cuisine is one of our favorite parts about traveling. Asian culinary traditions are tied to local ingredients, cooking techniques, and customs. On all of our Asia tour packages, we include select meals—carefully planned by our team of travel experts—to give you a taste of the culture.

When you visit Asia, you'll have many opportunities to sample flavors that may be brand-new to you, from bahn mi in Vietnam to ramen in Japan to potato curry in India. Despite the differences in cuisine across Asia, you'll find that certain staples are used in many countries. Rice, soy, noodles, and spices are often used to create a balance of sweet, spicy, and savory in meals.

Let's face it—packing for any trip can be tricky! Our best advice is to plan ahead and try to lighten your load. As you're prepping to go on one of our Asia trips, keep these pointers in mind:

  • It's a good idea to stick to one carry-on bag and one suitcase per person.
  • Bring lightweight layers for varying temperatures.
  • When inside Buddhist temples, your shoulders and knees should be covered as a sign of respect.
  • A comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential for when you're out exploring.
  • Sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat, is important to have on hand in warmer destinations.
  • Don't forget your camera, too!

After you've reserved one of our Asia vacation packages, you'll receive more detailed information about getting ready for your tour that is tailored to your specific destination.

Loved it. I think we should have had better plane seats since we have booked so far in advance. A little more time would be nice, and it seemed a little rushed.

My mom got severe arthritis in knees. my father can hike with me in sapa. how can i manage my mom unable to hike with us.

About the hiking tour in Sapa: Normally this tour requires hiking from the town to the villages. And I think your mom also can does this activity. Our tour guide and driver will assist you with this problem during the tour.

Where should buy the SIM card for your Vietnam Tours?

There are four cell networks in Vietnam: Viettel, Mobifone, Vinaphone and Vietnamobile. The recommended one is Viettel since this is the most popular and largest network in Vietnam, closely followed by Vinaphone while the cheapest brands are Mobifone and Vietnamobile but they have the poor data service outside the large cities. You could see numerous stalls selling SIM cards at international airports & tiny stores on city streets. However, most cards purchased from these places aren't registered. It is ok if you just stay for a short time and stick to big cities such as Hanoi, Hoi An, Hue, etc. However, if you are plan heading off the beaten track in mountainous regions such as Ha Giang or Mu Cang Chai, buying a SIM card from an official store for registration is a great choice. For Viettel, you can check their reliable stores at Viettel website (https://vietteltelecom.vn/). After buying a SIM card, to check who your SIM is registered to, texting TTTB to 1414. To check the balance for the calls and texts, type *101# and press Call. To check the data usage balance, text KTTK and send to 191. To top up, you can buy vouchers at any store on the streets, next type *100* # and press Call.

How to Avoid Food Poisoning in Vietnam?

Though Vietnam is famous for being the paradise for culinary adventures, as a traveller, you might feel a bit nervous regarding the possibility of food poisoning. To avoid this worst nightmare that can happen during your trip, there are some tips you should consider: Avoid any place that is empty and dirty; remember to drink bottled water since the tap water in Vietnam is not drinkable; choose a place that looks clean and hygiene; maybe you can ask for hot water to dip your utensils; should buy uncut fruit from a clean stall and wash first; raw meat and seafood are not recommended unless in a high-end restaurant.

Where is the official source to check information about E-Visa Vietnam?

Please do not confuse E-visa and VOA (Visa on Arrival) since these are two different processes. The official site to check information about E-Visa Vietnam is at National Web Portal on Immigration E-Visa Page (https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/web/guest/trang-chu-ttdt). On this website, you can also find information about the list of countries that allowed E-visa issuing and list of ports that allowed foreigners to enter and exit Vietnam by E-visa.

What power plugs should be brought with you in Vietnam Tours?

There are three types of plugs can be used in Vietnam: Plugs type A - Two flat vertical pins, Type C and Type F - Two round pins. The power plug 3 pins can be used in some places in Vietnam but it less common, you might need an adapter in this case. Please be noted that Vietnam's electricity voltage is 220 Volt at 50 Hz. If your power adapter says '100-240, 50-60Hz', it is totally fine to use them as long as you have the right plug. Otherwise, a transformer to convert the voltage from 110 to 220 volts might be needed.

Is tipping mandatory in Vietnam?

Tipping isn't customary or mandatory in Vietnam. However, waiter/waitress, drivers and other service workers appreciate a tip of spare change or another small amount when their services have been done particularly good.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

Vietnam is a country that you can travel all year round since the weather varies from North to South. If you are not a fan of hot and humid weather, you shouldn't visit Vietnam during the summer season which lasts from May to September, the average temperatures can rise up to 38 degrees Celsius.

Which destinations should I visit in Vietnam?

Since Vietnam is a cultural richness and diverse geography, it can be overwhelming amongst many unique and beautiful destinations such as Hoi An, Halong Bay, Ha Giang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City or Mekong Delta. Starting from what you love to explore, listed all of them into the note then check out the list of top best destinations in Vietnam to find out which places attract you most. Southeast Asia Tours & Travel

Southeast Asia Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Southeast Asia – comprised of nine major nations and two smaller ones that lie south of China and north of Australia -- is one of the world’s greatest travel destinations. An exotic blend of cultures, religions, art, architecture, history, cuisines and landscapes, Southeast Asia never fails to fascinate, and is deserving of multiple trips to discover its wide array of attractions and people.

There’s a good reason why a visit to Southeast Asia is on the top of many travelers’ bucket lists. When you travel  to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Malaysia and other countries in the region, you’re guaranteed to have experiences and witness sights that you will never forget:

  • A young Vietnamese woman dressed in a white silk tunic cycling past lush green rice paddies through a morning mist.
  • A stream of Burmese Buddhist monks garbed in saffron robes walking to riverside temples to pray.
  • Thai children swimming in the klongs (canals) of Bangkok, as myriad longboats speed past them.
  • Outdoor noodle stand operators (“hawkers”) firing up their woks in Singapore, while their aromas permeate the air.
  • A string of open-air longhouses standing on stilts in East Malaysia on the exotic island of Borneo.
  • Thick tropical jungles teeming with rare birds, plants, and animals.

And so much more that it can be overwhelming deciding where to go first – or next.

Here are some highlights of each country to keep in mind when making your decision:

Touring Thailand

Thailand is the most visited Southeast Asian country, and the one with the best tourist infrastructure. It also has some of the best food in the world – whether it’s a noodle dish from an outdoor stand or a seafood feast served at an upscale restaurant. Bangkok’s traffic and heat can be unnerving, but the fabulous Royal Palace, colorful wats, busy canals and floating markets make up for it and more. Cool off in mountainous northern Chiang Mai, relive some history at the Bridge on the River Kwai on the Burmese border, or experience the beaches and islands of southern Thailand. The Thai people are known for their smiles and hospitality.

Touring Vietnam

While war museums and underground guerilla tunnels are still on most tour itineraries, Vietnam is long removed from the traumas of the 1960s-era Vietnam War. The vast majority of Vietnamese were not alive then, and Americans are warmly welcomed. Busy Saigon is a must stop, but more peaceful Hanoi is more reflective of the traditional culture. Halong Bay – with its wealth of islands and grottoes viewed from cruise ships -- is the top scenic wonder in the country, while the Mekong River is popular for river cruises. Vietnamese food is also exceptional.

Touring Burma (Myanmar)

Burma has been dubbed a “Buddhist wonderland” because of its thousands of temples and throngs of Buddhist monks. Mostly cut off from the world until the last few years, Burma hasn’t changed much for decades, though change will come – a good argument for seeing it now. The best viewing may be via a river cruise on the Irrawaddy, which flows through the country. The cruises typically include time in Yangon (Rangoon) and Mandalay as well as providing unforgettable views of the countryside and a mix of Buddhist and British colonial architecture.

Touring Cambodia

Devastated by the wars of the 1960s and ‘70s and by the subsequent “Killing Fields” rule of the maniacal dictator Pol Pot, Cambodia has rebounded into one of the upcoming tourist destinations in the region. The prime attraction is Angkor Wat, the ruins of the 12 th century “City of Temples” built during the Khmer Empire and the largest religious complex ever built. It lies in the jungles near the city of Siam Reap and can be reached via Mekong River cruises that often start or end in Vietnam.

Touring Laos

Another country that suffered from the effects of the Vietnam War, Laos is now coming into its own as a tourist destination. Its capital, Vientiane, is a city of Buddhist temples and of leafy boulevards laid out in the French style (like much of Indochina, Laos is a former French colony). Another jewel now being discovered is the ancient city of Luang Prabang, which occupies a highly scenic spot along the Mekong valley in northern Laos; it’s also known for its wealth of Buddhist temples, French ambiance and variety of outdoor activities.

Touring Indonesia

Southeast Asia’s most populous country stretches across a vast sea of islands large and small. It includes crowded Java, parts of Borneo and New Guinea, Komodo Island (home of the famous Komodo dragons), and tourist haven Bali, known for its beaches, arts scenes, rice paddies, and as the only Hindu-majority island in this predominantly Muslim nation. With as many as 17,000 islands in all – many uninhabited – Indonesia merits multiple visits, each of which may prove very different from the rest.

Touring Malaysia & Singapore

Malaysia is another majority Muslim country that also has a strong Buddhist population, many of them ethnic Chinese. The country is divided into two main sections: Peninsular (mainland) Malaysia and East Malaysia, which occupies part of the island of Borneo. Highlights of the former include the spice island of Penang, known for its cuisine; Malacca, which shows heavy Dutch influence from centuries ago; and the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, home to some of the tallest buildings in the world, a trove of restaurants, and classy hotels.

The east coast of mainland Malaysia is known for its sea turtles, beaches, and offshore islands. East Malaysia is the site of Mt. Kinabalu, Borneo’s highest peak (which can be climbed) and exotic plant, animal, and human life. Singapore, an island nation situated at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, has gone modern in a big way, but is known for its superb Chinese cuisine and attractively designed parks and urban spaces.

Touring The Philippines

Like Indonesia, the Philippines is a nation of thousands of islands. Located in the western Pacific off the eastern coast of continental Asia, the Philippines were once under U.S. and Spanish control, and many residents speak English and Spanish as well as the native Tagalog. The country is a jumble of ethnicities and religions.

Manila, the capital, is traffic choked but a must-stop for its colonial-era center along the waterfront, its atmospheric Chinatown, and the historic island of Corregidor in Manila Bay, where U.S. troops battled the Japanese in World War II. The outer islands offer a varied mix of tropical beaches and traditional culture.

Pope, 87, Embarks on ‘Physical Test’ in Grueling Asia Tour

The 11-day trip, a signal that Francis does not intend to slow down, requires nearly 45 hours of air travel and meetings in tropical climates.

Pope Francis waves to a crowd of people surrounding him.

By Emma Bubola

Reporting from Vatican City and Jakarta, Indonesia

Pope Francis leaves Monday on an 11-day trip to Southeast Asia and Oceania, the longest and among the most complicated of his tenure. It could be particularly challenging for Francis, 87, who has been using a wheelchair and battling health problems.

But the trip, which includes a stop in Indonesia — the world’s largest Muslim majority country — also signals he has no intention of slowing down his outreach to faraway Catholics.

Francis will visit four countries for a total of about 20,000 miles by plane. From Indonesia he goes to Papua New Guinea, then East Timor and Singapore, as he deepens his engagement with Asia, one of his priorities.

The trip will include more than 43 hours of air travel and meetings with local faithful, clergy and politicians in cities with tropical climates or high levels of pollution on the other side of the world from Rome.

“It’s a physical test,” said Massimo Faggioli, a professor of theology at Villanova University, “and a sign that this pontificate is far from being over.”

Why is he visiting these countries?

The pope chose four island nations as he extends his outreach to what he calls “the peripheries,” a term for overlooked, faraway places with small, minority or persecuted Catholic communities. The trip is also one of Francis’ boldest engagements with Asia, a fast-growing part of the world, which the pope has always regarded as a strategic objective.

Francis made a largely secretive deal with China in 2018 for the appointment of bishops, but not all issues have been resolved, as China’s government still exerts strong political control over religious life, said Gianni Criveller, dean of studies at the PIME International Missionary School of Theology in Milan.

While no pope has been able to visit China, Francis has taken trips, such as to Mongolia, that have basically put him on China’s doorstep. This time as well, Mr. Faggioli said, the trip is seen as an attempt to “talk to countries he can’t go to.”

He said the trip also showed Francis’ ambition to make the Roman Catholic Church truly global — drawing attention to areas not traditionally of Christian culture and where Catholicism coexists with other religions, relying on the communities’ devotion rather than on wealth, endowments or a historical hegemony.

Unlike in Europe, the Catholic church in Asia does not “rest on its laurels,” said Mr. Faggioli, and believing is in some cases still an act of resistance.

“He sends a message to all the Catholics,” Mr. Faggioli said. “That the future of the church looks more like these churches in which we are a minority than those in which we are a majority.”

The pope’s first stop, Indonesia, also reflects Francis’ commitment to promoting dialogue between Muslims and Christians. He was the first pope to visit the Arabian Peninsula , in 2019.

He is also likely to urge global action to protect the environment, in a part of the world that is particularly vulnerable to climate change, including rising sea levels and severe weather events like droughts and typhoons.

Is the pope too frail for such a trip?

The Vatican originally had considered the trip for 2020 but canceled it because of the pandemic. Despite being older now, the pope is committed to showing that despite his age and ailments he is “still alive though some wanted me dead,” as he once joked .

In recent years, Francis’ health has been a source of concern. Within three years, he underwent a hernia operation, had colon surgery and was hospitalized for a respiratory infection. Last year, he did not attend a summit in Dubai because of health problems.

Still, the pope has been seen walking in recent weeks, instead of using a wheelchair, as he has increasingly done.

In the 11-day trip, he will be accompanied by his medical team (two nurses and a doctor) and, in a first, by his secretaries. Matteo Bruni, the Vatican’s spokesman, said at a news briefing on Friday that no extra precautions were taken for this trip, as the measures they normally adopt were considered sufficient.

Still, the ambitious itinerary for the octogenarian leader of the world’s Roman Catholics inevitably has stirred questions about the impact on his health.

Reporters questioned Mr. Bruni about the 92 percent humidity that the pope would face in Vanimo, a town tucked between Papua New Guinea’s rainforest and the Pacific Ocean. Markus Solo, an Indonesian priest who focuses on interfaith dialogue at the Vatican, said he worried about the impact that Jakarta’s high pollution could have, partly because Francis lost part of a lung to infection as a teenager.

“Hopefully, the government will do something in order to reduce the pollution during the visit,” he said.

The head of the Environmental Service of Jakarta, Asep Kuswanto, said no specific plans for curbing air pollution had been made for the pope’s visit.

Still, it appeared that some measures had been taken to protect the pope’s health. Francis was not expected to visit Flores, a predominantly Catholic Indonesian island.

“His health condition doesn’t permit him to go all that way,” said Father Solo, originally from Flores. “We have to be very prudent.”

Ismail Cawidu, a senior official at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, an important stop on the visit, said that the pope would not tour the inside of the mosque but instead meet other religious leaders at a plaza outside.

Mr. Ismail said they had asked the Vatican if the pope could cross the “tunnel of friendship” that connects the mosque, Southeast Asia’s largest, with a Catholic cathedral but were still awaiting a response.

What can we expect from the trip?

Indonesia has a large Christian population, with a lively Catholic community. The country has been considered an example of interfaith tolerance but is still facing challenges to its image, as extremist Islamic groups have exerted growing pressure on other religions.

The pope’s visit to the Istiqlal mosque will include a meeting with representatives of the country’s officially recognized religions — Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism and Catholic and Protestant Christianity. He will also celebrate Mass at a stadium in the city, where tens of thousands are likely to attend.

Papua New Guinea, where more than 800 languages are spoken, is one of the world’s poorest countries, and Pope Francis “wants to send a message that he can reach everyone, that nobody is too faraway,” Father Criveller said. After spending most of next weekend in Port Moresby, the capital, Francis will fly north to the coastal town of Vanimo, and he may address the issue of protecting nature from extractive businesses and the effects of climate change.

In East Timor, Asia’s newest nation and the only predominantly Catholic country on the trip, Francis is to follow in the footsteps of John Paul II, who also visited the conflict-scarred nation. Francis may face questions over the scandal involving Carlos Ximenes Belo , a Nobel-winning bishop and independence hero who the Vatican acknowledged had sexually abused young boys.

In Singapore, an economic powerhouse with a blend of Asian ethnicities and religions, Francis will witness one of the world’s most diverse societies up close, as well as a small but dynamic Catholic community, where the faithful still crowd pews.

AirAsia X clinches Best International Airline at 2024 Australian Aviation Awards

The award marks a pivotal moment in the airline’s history.

' src=

AirAsia X received the Best International Airline Flying to Australia title  at the Australian Aviation Awards 2024 in Sydney.

Australian Aviation editor Adam Thorn said of the airline: “The judges were hugely impressed not only by its passenger performance, but technological innovations and commitment to sustainability.”

As of 2019, AirAsia X has flown over six million guests annually. At present, its focus is centred on the active expansion of routes connecting Australians to both popular and new hidden gems across Asia and beyond.

The airline presently flies to 23 destinations including Australian favourites such as India, Japan, South Korea, China and more. Recently, the airline launched flights to Almaty in Kazakhstan and Nairobi, Kenya, offering more value and choice for guests down under.

A pivotal moment

For AirAsia X chief executive Benyamin Ismail, the award marks a pivotal moment in the airline’s history as it was the very first destination it flew to when it began operations in November 2007.

Today, Australia remains one of AirAsia X’s core markets.

Ismail said: “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the incredible AirAsia X team who worked tirelessly to bring us out of the most challenging times in aviation history. Together, we have emerged stronger than ever, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the safest, most affordable, and reliable air travel experience for our guests with an exceptional inflight experience.”

Ismail added that, moving forward, the airline continues to enhance its products and services, and currently has a number of plans for significant growth in the near future.

Indeed, AirAsia X intends to cover the majority of continents, ensuring that Australians have even more value and choice when it comes to their travel options.
