Visapur Fort Trek – Thrilling one day trek near Pune Mumbai (INR 200)

Visapur fort covered under clouds

Visapur Fort Trek—-What kinds of trails have you come across while hiking a mountain or a fort? It would probably have been a forest trail, a boulders trail, a staircase trail, a skiing trail or a motorized trail. Have you ever trekked to the top of a mountain/ Fort taking a waterfall trail? If not, here is a great chance for you!! Be with me till the end of the post, and I will not be surprised if you start jumping in the excitement of going to Visapur Fort Trek. Ha-Ha! Not kidding, I am serious!!

Water flowing on Visapur Fort trek route

Waterfall trail on Visapur Fort trek

Located around 60 kms from Pune and 100 kms from Mumbai and standing at an elevation of about 1084 meters, Visapur Fort is one of the highest forts in Maharashtra. Perched upon a lush green plateau, the fort is a very popular excursion destination amongst nature lovers, trekkers, and campers. What’s special about one of the three routes which take you to the top is that you would need to climb through the gushing waterfall for the most part of the trail(only in monsoon season).

Umbrella walk at Visapur Fort Trek

Lush green Visapur Fort Trek

The fort is a part of the Lohagad – Visapur fortification and is the higher one among the two. Apart from the view of lush green surrounding in the nearby region, Visapur also holds an outstanding view of Tikona Fort , Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort and the Pawna Lake. If you start your day early, you can easily cover both Lohagad and Visapur fort on the same day (3-4 hours trekking in total).

How to reach Visapur Fort base village from Mumbai/Pune

The cheapest and convenient way to reach the fort is via railways. The nearest railhead to Visapur Fort is Malavli station (approx. 5 kms) which is well connected to Mumbai, Lonavala, and Pune via local trains. From Malavli station shared auto/taxi are available for the base village of Visapur Fort. You can also opt to walk all the way as it would hardly take an hour to reach the base village. For train bookings visit IRCTC .

What I would suggest is to rent a bike from Pune/Mumbai/Lonavala (around 300 INR/per day). The road trip would add more fun to your entire journey.

Various trek routes for Visapur Fort

There are mainly 3 trekking routes to reach the top of Visapur Fort.

1)The Patan Village trail : Trickiest among the 3 routes, it generally takes about 2 hours to reach the top from this route. For the start, take help of the locals who will show you the correct trail. Remember, you must keep Patan village to your left. Once you come across a waterfall, stick to it for the rest of the route.

After 20 minutes you will reach a fork, take the right one for Visapur Fort as the left goes to the Lohagad fort. Also, you can take help of arrows marked in the stone at a few places. After hiking for about 30 minutes, you will come across a broken staircase which will lead you to the entrance of the fort. This route is most exciting as you walk on different terrains on the same trek.

2) The Bhaje Caves trail : Bhaje caves are situated on the midway of Malavli station and Visapur base village. After climbing a few steps of Bhaje caves, look towards your left where you will see a huge mango tree. Follow the trail and you will reach a small plateau where you will see 2 abandoned huts.

Now keep to the left-hand side of the hill as you climb up along the walls till you come across a small waterfall. From here a small trail will lead you to the start of stairs way, the route eventually meets the route from the Patan Village.

3)The Gaimukh Khind trail : This is probably the fastest way to reach the top of Visapur Fort (1 hour). On the route to Lohagad from Malavli, take a left once you reach Viraj Farms Lohgad (search on Gmaps). Continue walking for 10-15 minutes, once you reach a point where the road divides into two. Take the left trail; after walking for a few meters, you will see a board where it’s written Visapur Kade, take that trail. Now the trail is pretty straightforward passing through jungles and then the waterfall.

What I would suggest is to ascend from the Gaimukh Khind and descend from the Bhaje caves trail.

The difficulty level of Visapur Fort Trek

I would rate Visapur Fort trek as an easy to moderate level trek and would highly recommend it to beginners. It generally takes around  1 – 1.5 hours to reach the top depending on the route which you are choosing. Also, there are many shelters all along the trail, which will help to catch your breath. If you are doing the trek in monsoon, just be extra cautious as the route becomes little slippery.

My Journey to Visapur Fort from pune

It was my second visit to Visapur fort; I wanted to explore the other trekking routes to get to the top of the fort. I started from Pune around 6:00 am and took the village route to reach the base of the Visapur Fort.

The village route passes through Kolvan, Hadashi, Javan, Tikona Peth, and Lohagad. Riding all along the Pawna Lake with a view of Tung Fort in the background is a moment to cheer about.

After parking the bike at the base village, I headed for the Visapur Fort by taking the Gaimukh Khind trail. The fort was entirely covered under clouds, with water gushing out from the various points of the fort wall. It was raining heavily and owing to heavy fog, visibility was almost zero. As I knew the route, finding the correct trail wasn’t an issue for me at all.

En-route to Visapur Fort

After walking through little forest cover, I reached a point where the further trail ahead was all along the waterfall. It was very exciting to trek through the waterfall trail. At the top, it seemed that clouds were just walking along with me. Hurray!! The scenery of clouds surrounding the fort certainly needs to be captured on your camera.

Cloudy condtions on Visapur Fort Trek

Cloudy at Visapur Fort Trek

If you are visiting a fort in the monsoon in Maharashtra, most probably you won’t be able to explore its surroundings owing to the prevalent foggy weather for the entire day. As I had already explored the fort on my previous visit, hence I was just interested to descend down taking the staircase way.

Foggy conditions at Visapur Fort trek top

I was a bit lost on the vast plateau of Visapur Fort and was unable to locate the staircase way owing to heavy fog. After wandering around for half an hour and using Gmaps, I finally made it the point from where I needed to descend. The water falling from the staircase was definitely a moment to capture.

Walking along the waterfall and passing through few lush green plateaus, I reached the staircase which leads to Bhaje caves. The caves are a group of 22 rock cut caves having a number of stupas.

Bhaje caves near Visapur Fort

Bhaje Caves near Visapur Fort

Near to the last cave, there is a waterfall which falls in a small pond during monsoon season.  There is a little entrance fee of INR 10 for the Bhaje caves. You should not miss visiting this cave.

Bhaje caves near Kamshet

From Bhaje caves, a 10 minutes’ walk will take you to the Bhaje waterfall where you can take a bath to put an end to the exciting journey. If you have time and strength left, you can also trek to the top of Lohagad Fort as it would hardly take 2 more hours in total. I had already explored Lohagad thrice, so was not at all interested to trek again. For the return, I took the Old Mumbai Pune highway.

What to do and see on Visapur Fort

The top of the fort is a vast green plateau and you can walk along the perimeter and enjoy the breathtaking view of the surroundings including Tikona Fort, Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort and the Pawna Lake. There are few water storage cisterns, temples of Hanuman, a decorated arch and old house also at the top which you can explore.

Food and stay options at Visapur Fort

Generally, no one stays overnight due to lack of proper accommodation options. Also, the fort can be visited on a day trip from Pune/Mumbai. But if you are planning to stay, there is a village at the base of Visapur – Lohagad where you will find few stay options. Viraj Farms at the start point of trek do have accommodation options available.

Also you can set up you tent at the top. The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.

Best time to visit Visapur Fort

Undoubtedly, the monsoon months of July to September is the best time to trek to the Visapur Fort as the surroundings are lush green and there are many waterfalls all along the way. Though one needs to be little extra cautious as trails become little slippery during monsoon. Architecture and Attractions of Visapur Fort

Visapur Fort is a marvel of architecture and engineering. It was built by the first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, Balaji Vishwanath, in 1713-1720. It was later captured by the British in 1818 after a three-hour long battle.

Visapur Fort is larger and higher than Lohagad Fort, which is its twin fort. It has a surface area of about 7 km2, while Lohagad Fort has a surface area of about 4 km2. It also has a different design and layout than Lohagad Fort. It has a circular shape with multiple bastions and walls. It also has several entrances and exits.

Visapur Fort has many attractions and highlights that make it worth visiting. Some of them are:

The wall of the fort: The wall of the fort is one of the most impressive features of Visapur Fort. It is about 6 km long and 3 meters thick. It encircles the entire fort and has several openings for cannons and guns. It also has several carvings and sculptures of animals, humans, and gods.

The waterfall trail: The waterfall trail is one of the most exciting features of Visapur Fort Trek in the monsoon season. It is a steep and slippery trail that goes through a series of waterfalls that flow from the top of the fort. It offers a refreshing and exhilarating experience for trekkers who love water adventures.

The plateau on top: The plateau on top of Visapur Fort is a vast and flat area that has many ruins and relics of the past. It has several water tanks, cisterns, wells, granaries, temples, caves, houses, stables, and barracks. It also has a flag pole that hoists a saffron flag on special occasions.

The water tanks in caves: The water tanks in caves are one of the most intriguing features of Visapur Fort. They are large tanks that are carved inside natural caves on the fort. They were used to store water for drinking and other purposes. They have a capacity of about 22 lakh liters of water.

The flag, canon, and bastion: The flag, canon, and bastion are some of the most prominent features of Visapur Fort. They are located on the highest point of the fort and offer a spectacular view of the surroundings. The flag is a saffron flag that symbolizes the Maratha pride and glory. The canon is a huge metal canon that was used to defend the fort from enemies. The bastion is a circular structure that has several openings for firing guns and cannons.

The Hanuman temple: The Hanuman temple is one of the most sacred and revered places on Visapur Fort. It is a small temple that has an idol of Lord Hanuman, the monkey god and the devotee of Lord Rama. The temple is believed to be very old and powerful. It is also said that the idol of Hanuman grows in size every year.

Visapur Fort is a beautiful hill fort located near Maharashtra’s Visapur village, on the Western Ghats and is a part of the two forts – Lohagad and Visapur. It is also larger and at a much higher altitude than the Lohagad Fort. The fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from the Mughals, but later the British captured Visapur and destroyed Lohagad. The northern and southern gateways of the Lohagad fort were blown up because of the fort having a major significance. However, the fort wall is intact even to this day. Enjoy trekking in the Western Ghats to this fort during the monsoons and witness nature’s grandeur in its entirety.

Situated about 9 km from Malavi Station, there are two routes to get to this fort – one from Malavi Station and the other by road, from Bhaje Caves to Lohagad base village (Lohagadwadi). Begin your Visapur Trek from Mumbai and head to the base village, Bhaje. Trek along the beautiful trail and behold views of the waterfall and greenery that are most alive during the monsoons. On arriving at the base village at 10:00 AM, enjoy a relaxing breakfast. At 10:30 AM, there will be a brief introduction session about the entire trek, after which you will begin with your Visapur Fort Trek. It is an easy trek amidst lush greenery, misty hills, and a beautiful waterfall. On getting to the top at around 1:30 PM, you are free to explore the fort. The Visapur Fort trek all takes about 2 hours from its base village trail to reach the summit for experienced trekkers.

It was Built in the year 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Peshwa, The first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire it was built much later than the famous Lohagad fort but at a hill much above the Lohagad Fort. This fort was not much accessed and hence till today it has some remains of the ancient architecture and Peshwa empire ruins that attract history buffs every year.

The fort has a huge carving of Lord Hanuman establishing that he was The Deity of the kingdom but the fort couldn't be intact since there were attacks on it by neighboring villages in order to expand their kingdom. The Britishers also attacked the Lohagad fort by placing cannons at the Visapur Fort thus conquering both the forts in 1800 AD. The fort is now taken care of by the Tourism Department of Maharashtra and remains a favorite trekking destination during the monsoons.

A content creator's aesthetic dream when it rains, the trek gives you a feeling of walking through the clouds and gives peace to the mind and soul. This twin fort can be accessed via three routes-one from Patan Village, one from Bhaje Caves, and the third one from Gaimukh Khind. The trails are all full of greenery during the monsoon and barren during the rest of the year. The route towards the fort gives you an idea about how powerful the Maratha Kingdom was because of the resources available at this height.

Visapur Fort Trek is a moderate elevation trek and is located at 3567ft. above sea level providing a spectacular view of its surroundings. It is suitable for beginners and gives you a great first-time experience. Accessible from Pune, Mumbai, and Lonavala easily via railways this fort is a history lover's window into the past era and one can easily imagine the grandeur it must have during the Maratha Empire's reign. One of the biggest attractions of southwestern India, the Visapur Fort, is located near the Visapur village in Maharashtra and is an integral part of the Lohagad-Visapur fortification. Located in the district of Pune, the Visapur Fort is only at a distance of approximately 5.5 to 6 kilometres from the Lalavli railway station. What makes the fort so famous is the long trek that enhances the entire experience for the tourists and the visitors. The Visapur and Lohagad forts are situated on the same plateau or tabletop and stand 1084 meters from sea level.

History Of Visapur Fort

The Lohagad-Visapur fortification is a reminder of India’s rich cultural heritage and architectural splendours dating back to the eighteenth century. The fort was constructed by the first Peshwa of the Maratha empire, Balaji Vishwanathan. The construction began and was completed somewhere between 1713 CE and 1720 CE under the reign of Peshwa Balaji Vishwanathan. The comparatively more famous Lohagad Fort was built much later. Still, the Visapur Fort was constructed on a cliff much higher than Lohagad, and the journey to the fort is nothing short of an adventure. The history of Visapur Fort is closely tied with the greatness of the Maratha Empire. It attracts throngs of visitors and historical and architectural experts every year.

The history of the Lohagad and the Visapur Forts is entwined. Visapur drew the attention of the British colonial rulers in 1818 when an attack was launched on the fort on 4th March 1818. To force the Peshwari to come to its knees, an army comprising 380 European soldiers and 800 Indian soldiers was deployed from the Konkan coast. The valour and the financial strength of the Maratha empire made the British summon two other battalions and entire artillery from Chakan to join the battle.

Taking advantage of the high altitude, the British troops strategically set up their firearms and bombed the Visapur Fort, which forced the Maratha warriors to flee from the fort when the British took over its control in the same year. Colonel Prother was chosen to take over the full command of the fort, followed by the complete annihilation of the northern and the southern getaways from the fort, except for a few scattered huts around the area. The Konkan (northern) and the Deccan (southern) way-outs were closed to prevent future attacks. The Lohagad Fort was not affected much and is comparatively in better shape and still intact.

Visapur Fort Trek Details

A visit to the Visapur Fort trek is an experience for a lifetime. The trek starts at the base of the Visapur cliff, from the Bhaje village. The muddy path through Bhaje is a simple walk as the land is flat, and the elevation does not start for some time. The fort's walls still stand and can be seen from the base of the trek itself. After 4 kilometres, the road split into two, forming a crossroad. The trail on the right leads to the Lohagad Fort, while the one on the left will lead you to the Visapur Fort. The twin forts are located on the same plateau and can be covered in a single day.

This is where the climb begins, and the road gets steeper. There are arrows all along the way, steering the trekkers in the right direction you must follow until you reach a small hut. You will find a stone marking with the painting of a horse. Once you reach this point, turn to the left and enjoy the second part of the journey as you climb higher. Several waterfalls come down with regained strength and beauty during the monsoons. The charm of the trek is greatly alleviated by the waterfalls and streams that make the rainy season the best time to visit the Visapur Fort .

It takes around 40 to 45 minutes to complete the trek for amateurs. If you are a pro climber, it will take 30 minutes. The entire cliff boasts rich flora, including plenty of mosses, shrubs, and even bigger plants and trees. Some major attractions of the Visapur Lohagad twin forts include several small water reservoirs inside the caves, bigger water storage facilities, and a Hanuman temple. The visitors can also catch a glimpse of the Lohagad Fort and the Tikona and Tung forts from the Visapur fort. Around the fort, there are a few smaller buildings and establishments termed Wada, in the local tongue, and a canon and a bastion besides the Maratha flag and grinders used during the construction of the Visapur Fort. Follow the same path while coming down. The arrows and the road markers will help you reach the base without getting lost in the lush greenery and the wilderness.

Unlike the Visapur Fort, Lohagad was mostly under the Maratha occupation except for a short five-year period when the Mughals had taken over its command. The Archeological Survey Of India has taken up the caves' maintenance as part of the Monuments of National Importance. The significance of the caves lies in the fact that they were Buddhist institutions of learning and still housed several stupas or Buddhist sites of worship. The architecture of the caves leaves onlookers in awe. From Chaityas and Viharas to stone and wall carvings, the Bhaja Caves are bound to impress visitors from the very onset. The wall carvings include a woman playing the Tabla while other women dance to its rhythm.
