The 2024 Tour of Oman is the 13th running of this early season warm weather stage race through the deserts of the Gulf state. With three of the five stages finishing on an upward gradient it favours the climbers but there are also opportunities for the sprinters, so expect a thrilling race.

The 13th Tour of Oman kicks off on Saturday, February 10 for five stages of racing under the warm desert sun. While some riders will see it as a chance to get quality miles in their legs in good conditions, many will be chomping at the bit to put in a strong performance and get their year off to a good start. 

Looking at the stage profiles, three of the five days finish on uphill gradients, but it’s only the final stage to Green Mountain that's really for the pure climbers. It's here that the favourites for the overall win will have to be at their best and top of this list are Adam Yates and Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates), Louis Meintjes (Intermarché - Wanty) and Warren Barguil (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL).

The race starts with a stage for the pure sprinters — the likes of Fabio Jakobsen, Bryan Coquard, Alexander Kristoff and Caleb Ewan — but after this they start to favor climbers or the sprinters who can climb a bit. Stage two finishes with a 2.6 kilometre 7% climb, stage three the 4.6 kilometre 8.5% climb up Eastern Mountain, then the big finale on the final stage. As is the case every year, the now infamous Green mountain, with its brutal 10% slopes, lies in wait to decide who will win.

Just like the previous day, stage four of the race was again shortened due to adverse weather and the riders ended up facing only 104 kilometres in the Yitti Hills. Awaiting at the finish was an uphill sprint but before that a couple of killer climbs to cross including the 3 kilometre 10% incline of Al Jabal Road. This destroyed the chances of the pure sprinters leaving a reduced bunch of lighter men to fight out the finale. 

At the end it was the Belgian Amaury Capiot (Arkéa-B&B Hôtels) who took the win from Ide Schelling (Astana Qazaqstan) and Davide De Pretto (Jayco AlUla). 

With one stage left to race and the finish up Green Mountain looming the overall classification is finally poised with Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) now in the red jersey just three seconds ahead of Luke Lamperti (Soudal Quick-Step).

Van der Poel zet Philipsen vakkundig af, maar de 'Vlam van Ham' wordt geklopt door oermens Milan in rit 1 Renewi Tour

Jonathan Milan heeft de eerste rit in de Renewi Tour gewonnen. De Italiaan van Lidl-Trek was in de massasprint de allersterkste. Jasper Philipsen ( Alpecin-Deceuninck ) werd perfect afgezet door Mathieu van der Poel , maar was niet opgewassen tegen de Zuid-Europese beer.

De Renewi Tour - voorheen ook wel bekend onder namen als Benelux Tour, BinckBank Tour en Eneco Tour - wordt normaliter voor de helft in Nederland en voor de helft in België verreden. Deze editie was dat echter net wat anders, daar vrijwel alle af te leggen kilometers zich in België bevonden. Op dag één werd er afgetrapt met een etappe van 163,6 kilometer tussen Riemst en Bilzen, waarin er in totaal acht gecategoriseerde beklimmingen overwonnen moesten worden. Deze zaten per twee of drie verpakt in een lange lokale ronde van ongeveer zestig kilometer.

TDT-Unibet Cycling Team goed vertegenwoordigd in kopgroep

Er stond in ieder geval genoeg schoon volk aan het vertrek van de etappewedstrijd, met naast wereldkampioen Mathieu van der Poel ook topsprinters als Olav Kooij , Dylan Groenewegen, Jasper Philipsen, Jonathan Milan, Tim Merlier, Arnaud De Lie, Fabio Jakobsen en Fernando Gaviria. Het waren ook die heren uit het spurtersgilde die in deze ouverture het meeste aanspraak op de zege maakten, al liep de finaleweg wel venijnig op. Onderweg was er - de Renewi Tour staat er inmiddels bekend om - ook de Gouden Kilometer, waar op drie verschillende momenten in één kilometer verschillende bonificatieseconden te verdienen waren.

Wie o wie zouden er in de eerste kopgroep van de vijfdaagse gaan? Het bleken vier thuisrijders en één Fransman . De namen? Loïc Vliegen, Ceriel Desal (beiden Bingoal WB), Jordy Bouts, Axel Huens (beiden TDT-Unibet Cycling Team) en Lars Craps (Team Flanders - Baloise). Het vijftal wist een paar minuten voorsprong bijeen te fietsen, al waren er dusdanig veel sprintersploegen (aan het controleren), dat zij al vrij vlug geen schijn van kans leken te maken.

Sprinten zonder Kooij: Milan klopt Philipsen, die weer vakkundig werd afgezet door Van der Poel

De vlucht van de dag zong het in ieder geval uit tot aan die welbekende Gouden Kilometer, welke inmiddels was omgedoopt tot de Groene Kilometer. Daar waren het vooral Craps (vier), Desal (vijf) en Huens (zes) die de meeste seconden meesnoepten. Aan de meet waren er echter ook seconden te winnen, dus hoe ging dat zich ontvouwen?

Op zeventien kilometer van de aankomst waren de vluchters gegrepen, waarna in principe al alle ogen op de massasprint gericht konden worden. De verschillende treintjes hadden ruimschoots de tijd om zich te vormen en klaar te stomen voor een krachtsexplosie in de straten van Bilzen. Op veertien kilometer van de finish werd het peloton echter opgeschrikt door een redelijk grote valpartij. Grootste slachtoffer wat betreft kanshebbers? Kooij, de man-in-vorm. Ook Philipsen moest een comeback zien te maken, al was het niet helemaal duidelijk wat er bij de Vlam van Ham precies aan de hand was.

Goed, wat gebeurde er precies in de spurt? Philipsen was net op tijd teruggekeerd in de voorste gelederen van het pak en kon zich dan toch gaan mengen in de grote sprintersbonanza. Van der Poel was er (uiteraard) ook bij en kon zijn Vlaamse spurtkopman proberen te piloteren. Dat deed hij echter met een wel héél lange lead-out, puur en alleen op de macht. Philipsen werd goed afgezet, maar werd in extremis overrompeld door Italiaans beer Milan, die met machtige pedaalslagen naar de overwinning sprintte. Na de finish vielen Merlier en Groenewegen ook nog eens, met een klein akkefietje - en waarschijnlijk serieuze blessures - als gevolg.

After a thrilling first edition of the Muscat Classic, the Tour of Oman returns with an unprecedented live broadcast on Oman Sports TV. The action is condensed in five days of racing and the course is climbing-packed all the way to the summit of Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain) on Wednesday. On Monday, stage 3 leads the peloton from Al Khobar to an unprecedented summit finish in Al Hamra, where the battle for the overall victory will heat up .
