Cross-country Tour de Ski 2023/24: preview, full schedule, how to watch live

Norway's Johannes Klæbo is defending his Tour de Ski crown in the cross-country skiing event, with Jessie Diggins of USA going in as the favourite to land the women's title she last won in 2021.

The 2023/24 Tour de Ski in cross-country skiing gets underway with a sprint race in Toblach, Italy on Saturday, 30 December.

Can anyone stop reigning men's champion Johannes Klæbo from securing a third-consecutive crown?

Frida Karlsson is the reigning champion on the women's side, but the question is whether she will even start to defend her title. The star has struggled to find her best form since contracting COVID after the cross-country skiing opening event in Ruka, and 2021 champion Jessie Diggins is currently leading the overall season rankings.

The Tour de Ski, which is part of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, will see skiers compete in seven stages, moving from Toblach to Davos, Switzerland, before the finale on the famously steep and gruelling mass start in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

2023/24 Tour de Ski: Stars to watch

On the men’s side, Johannes Klæbo is the Tour de Ski favourite. He picked up where he left off last season and currently leads the World Cup overall rankings.

In fact, the reigning Olympic champion from Norway has won four races this year, which is 50 per cent of the season so far.

His compatriot, Harald Oestberg Amundsen is also having a good season and currently sits second in the overall standings after dominating the distance events.

Elsewhere, keep an eye out for another Norwegian, Paal Golberg , who won the 10km freestyle in Ostersund and is expected to be a medal threat.

On the women’s side, USA’s Jessie Diggins has taken full advantage of Frida Karlsson ’s fitness struggles to take the lead in this year’s overall rankings.

As a previous Tour de Ski winner, Diggins goes into the event as the favourite. However, she’ll have to be at her best to beat Sweden’s Ebba Andersson , who has won multiple times this season and currently edges Diggins in the distance events, as well as Emma Ribom , who currently tops the sprint charts.

How to watch the 2023/24 Tour de Ski

The multi-stage cross-country World Cup event will be televised by FIS broadcast partners and available for digital live streaming in many territories.

In Europe, the action will be available on Eurosport, while US viewers can follow the event live on skiandsnowboard.live and on-demand on Outside+ .

Tour de Ski: Complete program for the 2023/2024 edition

After the World Cup in Trondheim, Norway, the cross-country skiing World Cup heads to central Europe. Here is the complete competition program for Tour de Ski 2023/2024.

Now in its 18 th edition Tour de Ski consists of seven competitions over nine days in three different locations and two countries, and it’s the fifth stage of the 2023/2024 cross-country skiing World Cup.

The event starts on Saturday, December 30, 2023, with a sprint in freestyle technique in Toblach, Italy, and ends on January 7, 2024, with a 10km Final Climb in freestyle technique in Val di Fiemme, Italy. See below the complete program for Tour de Ski 2023/2024.

After Tour de Ski, the World Cup continues with competitions in January in Germany (Oberhof) and Switzerland (Goms). Then, the World Cup heads to North America in February, first to Canada (Canmore) and then to the USA (Minneapolis). 

After North America, the World Cup returns to Scandinavia to end the season with weekends in Finland (Lahti), Norway (Oslo and Drammen), and Sweden (Falun).

TV-sending og streamingalternativer

I Norge er det NENT-gruppen som sitter på rettighetene til å vise Tour de Ski. På TV vil de vise hver konkurranse på hovedkanalen TV3, mens de på sin streamingplattform Viaplay også vil vise hver etappe.

Hvordan følge konkurransen online

Ved siden av sendingene på TV og stream (som vi på TVkampen har en fullstendig oversikt over) er det også mulig å følge Tour de Ski på FIS’ hjemmesider og deres sosiale medier. Her vil det også være mulig å få med seg hva som skjer via en ‘live tracker’, hvor all viktig info med tider og løpere vil oppdateres i sanntid.

Om Tour de Ski

Tour de Ski er en konkurranse i langrenn som ble startet tilbake i 2006/07-sesongen. Den tidligere norske langrennsløperen Vegard Ulvang var blant hjernene bak en langrennstour inspirert av sykkelrittet Tour de France, med forskjellige etapper og konkurranseformer fordelt på flere land. Det inkluderer en kombinasjon av sprint og distanseløp, som gjennomføres i både klassisk stil og fristil.

Den aller første sesongen ble gjennomført i Tyskland og Italia, og har i årene siden også hatt etapper i Tsjekkia og Sveits. Hvert år avsluttes konkurransen med stigningen opp "monsterbakken" i Val di Fiemme , hvor løperne går opp slalåmbakken Alpe Cermis på vei til mål. Selve bakken er 3,6 km lang, med en gjennomsnittlig stigning på 11,6 %.

Tour de Ski deltakende løpere

Blant årets løpere finner vi to klare vinnerkandidater for begge kjønn: for herrene er norske Johannes Høsflot Klæbo storfavoritt til å vinne Tour de Ski for tredje år på rad, mens på kvinnesiden holder bookmakerne amerikanske Jessica Diggins som favoritt til å vinne rittet for andre gang i sin karriere.

På herresiden er det igjen stor norsk dominans, med en rekke løpere blant de ti beste sammenlagt i verdenscupen. Det vil dermed ikke være noen overraskelse om Norge igjen tapetserer pallen i Tour de Ski 2023/24, akkurat som de gjorde i forrige utgave. De største utenlandske utfordrerne er svenske Calle Halfvarsson og italienske Federico Pellegrino.

På kvinnesiden er det mer åpent, hvor Diggins forventes å få størst konkurranse av den svenske trioen Ebba Andersson, regjerende mester Frida Karlsson og Emma Ribom. Bak disse finner vi Heidi Weng som Norges sterkeste vinnerkandidat. Skulle hun klare å gå til topps vil det være Norges første triumf for kvinner siden 2018/19, og hennes tredje totalt i Tour de Ski.

Etappene i Tour de Ski

I Tour de Ski 2023/24 skal løperne gjennom totalt syv etapper. Denne gang vil starten for første gang siden 2018/29 finne sted i italienske Toblach. Her åpnes konkurransen med sprint fristil lørdag 30. desember, før man de to påfølgende dagene vil gå henholdsvis 10 km intervallstart i klassisk og 25 km jaktstart i fristil.

Etter en hviledag 2. januar fortsetter rittet i Davos i Sveits. Også her starter man med sprint fristil (denne gang på kveldstid), før man neste dag går 20 km jaktstart i klassisk.

Lørdag 6. januar vil konkurransen fortsette i italienske Val di Fiemme, hvor man starter med en 15 km fellesstart i klassisk. Det blir en fin oppvarming før siste etappe neste dag, hvor man avslutter med fellesstart fristil opp “monsterbakken”. Den første som krysser mållinjen på toppen av bakken vil være vinner av Tour de Ski 2023/24.

Tidligere vinnere

I de første årene av konkurransen var det særlig sveitsiske Dario Cologna og polske Justyna Kowalczyk som dominerte, med hhv. tre og fire titler i løpet av de første syv sesongene. I 2013/14 tok Norge for første gang sammenlagtseieren for både menn og kvinner, og siden har det kun skjedd syv ganger at en norsk løper ikke har vunnet. Totalt har Norge vunnet Tour de Ski 13 ganger, fordelt på syv forskjellige utøvere.

The most famous cycle race in the world, the Tour de France will be taking to the skies once again this year, as the 3,404km and 21 stages will take in all 5 of France's mountain ranges! The Pyrenees, the Auvergne volcanoes, the Jura mountains, the Alps and the Vosges massif... The peloton has plenty of pedalling to do and plenty of climbing to do. The grandiose landscapes, the high altitude finishes and the dizzying descents promise to be emotional highs. From Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque, the Pyrenees take centre stage

After 3 stages on the Spanish side, welcome to the French Pyrenees! First there's Bayonne and the Basque country, Dax and its thermal baths, Pau and its beautiful castle where King Henry IV was born. And then there's Tarbes, with its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, its palm-lined streets (yes, yes!) and its gourmet markets. The riders of the 2023 Tour de France will need a lot of courage to tear themselves away from this gentle way of life and tackle the climbs of the Aspin and terrible Tourmalet cols . The reward for all this climbing is a finish on the Cambasque plateau, overlooking the charming resort of Cauterets, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, where the Pic du Midi is enthroned. Want to cool off? Try the hike to the peaceful Lac d'Ilhéou . In a green setting with magnificent views and waterfalls, picnics and swimming...

The Puy de Dôme, a feast for the eyes in Auvergne

The ascent of Puy de Dôme, the undisputed star of the Auvergne, will be one of the highlights of the 2023 Tour de France! The youngest and highest volcano in the Puys chain has not featured on the itinerary for 35 years. Taking on this fearsome and majestic peak and finishing with a 360° view over the gentle rolling hills of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne is sure to motivate many a rider! But did you know that you can also climb this peaceful giant by mule track or on board the Panoramique des Dômes, a picturesque little cogwheel train? In just 15 minutes, you'll be transported to an altitude of 1,465 m, with the 80 volcanoes of the Puy range and the Limagne fault (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site at your feet. To complete a stage that's full of fireworks, the Vulcania Park is not far away! Who can beat that?

Breathtaking escapes in the Jura

Expect to fall under the spell of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne! Just 1 hour from Lyon and the Monts du Beaujolais, this small town in the Ain département, from which the Tour de France 2023 peloton will set off on 14 July, is a delightful medieval town. With its pink stone houses, flower-bedecked bridges and old market hall housing one of France's most popular traditional markets, it is also the gateway to the Dombes region, a paradise for fish farmers and birdwatchers with its landscapes of water and ponds. Take advantage of this area on foot, by boat or, ideally, by bike (it's flat!), before taking to the heights of the Montagnes du Jura , just a stone's throw away. The Pyramide du Bugey, from the top of which you can see Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva, is a must-see. The Tour de France riders attack it via the Col du Grand Colombier. At top speed. Take your time, the panorama is well worth it!

In the Alps, between lakes and legendary passes

It's doubtful that the riders will enjoy the view of Lake Geneva as they take their first pedal to the metal in the Alps at Annemasse on stage 14 of the Tour de France 2023. We recommend this one, though, as well as the view of Lake Annecy and its turquoise waters. Then it's time for a series of twists and turns and climbs to the legendary passes of the Alps, including the famous Col du Feu, an unprecedented climb for the peloton. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, the stage finish in Morzine won't dampen the spirits of those who love nature. In summer, the little village resort in the Alps is an ideal playground for lovers of outdoor activities : a stroll along the Dérêches river, swimming in Lake Montriond, canyoning or via ferrata... the hardest thing will be to choose.

From Gets to Saint-Gervais, Mont Blanc in your sights

For the first time since its creation, the Tour de France will start from Les Gets. Well-known to mountain bikers (the World Championships were held there in 2022), the pretty Alpine resort will kick off a 15th stage during which you'll need to have plenty of breath. The Col de la Forclaz-Montmin is on the programme. So allow yourself a break at its belvedere for a bird's-eye view of Lake Annecy before setting off again for Saint-Gervais, at the foot of Mont-Blanc. If you want to reach the highest peak in the Alps, this village resort, with its well-preserved heritage and traditions, is the ideal place to stop. And its thermal baths, renowned for the many benefits of their waters, set the well-being at the summit in a magnificent green setting.

Courchevel, star of the Alps

The regulars call it Courch' and they come and go summer and winter as connoisseurs, just like the Tour de France caravan which is visiting the Savoyard resort for the 4th time. Welcome to the pinnacle of top-of-the-range skiing in the Alps, at the heart of the Three Valleys ski area. Courchevel tops the list not only for the size of its ski area (Méribel and Val Thorens are its famous neighbours) but also for its range of hotels (no fewer than 5 mountain palaces , from the Apogée to the Cheval Blanc, not forgetting the K2 Palace, Airelles and the Hôtel Barrière Les Neiges) and restaurants. So, with its 6 hamlets and the surrounding area, the resort has a lot to offer. Take a selfie at the top of La Saulire, take a stroll down to Lac de la Rosière, cycle down the Bike Park, spend the night in the Lacs Merlet refuge or hike through the heart of the Vallée des Avals... You're going to love it!

Full steam ahead in the Vosges

Between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain, the Vosges massif lives up to its reputation: a perfect blend of nature, wide open spaces, traditions and local produce, crafts and fine cheeses. Between the Grand Ballon d'Alsace and the Petit Ballon, via the famous Col de la Schlucht, the Tour de France 2023 will be taking a break from the normality of the mountains, with a new finish on the slopes of the Markstein, in the welcoming family resort of Marlstein Fellering. In the heart of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park , you can enjoy bucolic hikes, tobogganing in the mountain pastures, paragliding with a view, and mountain biking (or mountain bikes) in a landscape of absolute serenity. And for those with a sweet tooth, July is the peak of blueberry season (and the season for tarts in the farm inns).

And (finally) Paris.... and the Olympics!

Will the riders be in Olympic form for the triumphant finish on the Champs-Elysées on 23 July 2023? Just one year ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris , the route will certainly provide a magnificent prologue to the sporting event. Starting in Saint-Quentin en Yvelines, all the future Olympic venues in the Yvelines département will be on the peloton's final route. A gigantic loop will join the Colline d'Elancourt (where the mountain bike events will take place), the Golf National in Guyancourt and the Château de Versailles , which will host the equestrian events and part of the modern pentathlon competitions. A prestigious line-up of finishers for a Tour de France 2023 that's sure to be at the top of its game!

Where to watch Giro d'Italia 2024: Live stream, TV channel, schedule, prize money for cycling race

T he 107th Giro d'Italia is upon us, and as a whole host of the world's best cyclists arrive in Piedmont ahead of the first of 21 stages at this year's race, excitement is high to see if 2023 runner-up Geraint Thomas can go one better this time around. If he does, the Welshman will become only the third Briton to wear the pink jersey, and first since 2020.  

This event is one of just three Grand Tours in professional cycling, and second only to the Tour de France in terms of prestige and prize money. The first Giro d"Italia was held back in 1909, and sends dozens of world-class riders up and down the length and breadth of Italy, with 3,400.8 km to cover and 44,650 metres to climb over the course of this year's Tour. 

With a total of 218 numbered riders competing at the 2024 Giro, last year's runner-up Thomas starts with the no.1 on his back, although he comes into the event ranked as only the second-favourite. Two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar is amongst the line up, replacing his Slovenian compatriot Primoz Roglic, who will be unable to defend his 2023 title due to injury. 

The 2024 Giro d'Italia takes place between Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 26, with 21 stages varying from flats, hills, and mountains to time trials, and with individual honours in the points classification, mountains classification and the young rider class on top of the general classification, we're set for a world-class month of cycling action.

When is the 2024 Giro d'Italia? Full schedule

The 2024 Giro d'Italia begins on Saturday, May 4 in with the first stage in Piedmont, which will see the competing riders travel through 140km of hills from Venaria Reale into central Turin.

20 more races will follow the opening day, taking the riders as far south as Pompei (Stage 10) and back up towards the border with Switzerland at Livigno (Stage 16). The final stage takes place in the Italian capital, Rome, traversing the historic city before coming to the final finishing line, where the winners of each different classification will be ratified.

2024 Giro d'Italia prize money

There's a total prize fund of over €1.5 million on offer at this year's Giro, with the top 20 riders in each respective classification to receive three figures and above, depending on their finishing position at every stage of the event.

Their final classification following the last of the 21 stages will also see the top 20 receive a final amount and added bonus, with the top five also receiving up to £10,000 for their points total.

There are also added prize funds allotted to the respective leaders and eventual winners in the young riders classification and for each competing team, but the table below lists only the financial breakdown in General Classification:

The Giro d'Italia is one of three Grand Tour cycling events that will capture attention from across the globe this weekend.

Riders will rise, fall and rarely cruise along more than 3,300km of Italian roads as they seek to clinch the esteemed title.

Primož Roglič claimed the title in 2023, but history does not look favourably on champions in the following edition. Nobody has won consecutive Giro titles in over 30 years.

In any case, Roglič has opted against competing in this year's event, leaving red-hot Tadej Pogačar as the overwhelming favourite to go all the way.

Two-time Tour de France winner Pogačar is yet to win the Giro, and will be determined to make the most of his status as the man to beat.

UK viewers can watch all of the action live on discovery+ , the main hub for all Eurosport live coverage.

Every stage will be broadcast between the Eurosport 1 and 2 channels, with discovery+ encompassing all of their coverage online.

The discovery+ Standard plan is available for £6.99 a month or £59.99 per year .

Alternatively, the discovery+ Premium monthly pass costs £30.99 per month and offers all live sport across Eurosport and TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) platforms, including Premier League and European football, as well as UFC, motorsport and more.

Welsh-language channel S4C is the only free-to-air UK broadcaster showing live coverage of the race. You can tune in via Sky, Freeview, Virgin and Freesat, as well as via BBC iPlayer.

Giro d'Italia 2024 highlights on TV

There will be regular highlights shows across discovery+ , Eurosport and S4C throughout the Giro d'Italia, so you can keep track of all the biggest moments.

You can also tune in for highlights on free-to-air channel DMAX in the UK.

Who won the Giro d'Italia 2023?

Primož Roglič is the reigning Giro d'Italia champion after he clinched the title last year by the narrowest of margins.

He sealed victory with a 14-second gap to runner-up Geraint Thomas, who led the Giro from Stage 16 to 19 before Roglič stormed through.

The top two finished a minute ahead of João Almeida, who had separated from the rest of the chasing pack.
