Whether travelling by car or public transport, the obstacles are plentiful. For those bound for the South West there’s the choice between the perpetually congested M5 or tractor clogged A303 and if you’re planning on hoping over to Cymru for a bit of #vanlife, there’s a bloke asking you for £13.20 just to cross the bridge. Travelling by train is not really worth the hassle, as there’s every chance your path will be blocked by an officious official telling you there’s no room for your prized stick before you even get off the platform. Basically, for big smoke based wave riders unable to hop straight on a plane and bolt to more exotic climes, surfing can be a real ball ache. Image Coral Evans There are of course a plethora of rubbish quality breaks not all that far from London, including the likes of Brighton Pier , The Witterings and Joss Bay in Kent.  Don’t be tempted to focus on these, you’ll end up whiling away your life checking Magicseaweed for that once a year chart, and then you’ll drop everything when you think you see it, only to end up surfing two foot windchop with five-hundred other over-frothers. However, if you look a little further a field and set your sights on something better, there are still options that don’t involve spending all day in the car. Bournemouth Pier is the most obvious and consistent spot to make a beeline to, but the county offers many more waves for those prepared to hunt. They only rarely get really good, but there’s fun waves on offer a lot more often than you’d think. The coastline cops swell from SWerly storms and easterly wind swells and there are plenty of good set ups, both sandy and rock bottomed, to lap it all up. The piers at Bournemouth at Boscombe provide shelter from incessant westerly winds that usually accompany good ground swell, but there are a whole host of fun beach breaks along the coast for when the gales subside. The line-ups can get really really crowded, so learn the rules, and be respectful of the local boys. Porthcawl. Photo Tim Bow. Porthcawl –  Three hours drive from central London and you’ll find yourself in Porthcawl, Wales. The town offers a variety of different waves, including three sandy bays and a sucky left hand reef called Coney Beach. The beaches are super consistent, but their proximity to several big cities means the line up is always crowded. Whilst it never gets particularly big, Norfolk offers miles and miles of flint-laden perfectly shaped beach, which serve up sucky and hollow waves on the right wind and swell combo. The centre of the action is the pier at Cromer, which helps shape the banks, provides some shelter from the winds and serves up some fun wedging right handers on swells coming from the north east. To the east the various groins hold the sandbars together and act as a swell magnet, producing some of the best waves in the area on their day. LITTLEHAMPTON, WEST SUSSEX

How far from Central London? 64 miles (1hr 45 minutes driving)

Littlehampton has a small beach break, just to the east of the harbour entrance. If there’s a good east/southwesterly swell, then you’ll find a left breaking off the wooden groyne at high tide. But watch out, it’ll be busy with locals if it’s working.

BRIGHTON WEST PIER, EAST SUSSEX

How far from Central London? 54 miles (1hr 28 minutes driving)

Brighton’s West Pier is a popular slow longboarding wave but unfortunately it’s not quite as good as it used to be since the pier burnt down and the sandbanks have shifted. The West Pier works best at low tide with the sandy bottom making it a friendly beginner break.

EASTBOURNE, EAST SUSSEX

How far from Central London? 73 miles (1hr 50 minutes driving)

When a big storm is rolling across the south coast, Eastbourne can provide a sheltered haven for surfers. It works best at mid-tide when the swell is big.

CAMBER SANDS, EAST SUSSEX

How far from Central London? 80 miles (2hr 5 minutes driving)

Camber Sands has a lot of surf history to it, thanks to its ability to pick any good swell coming through the English Channel. It works best two to three hours before high tide and same after high tide. It’s also popular with kitesurfing enthusiasts.

If it’s windy, head down to the west end of the beach near the harbour wall. If it is blowing off-shore, make your way to Jury’s Gap beach on the east end of Camber Sands.

HASTINGS, EAST SUSSEX

How far from Central London? 66 miles (1hr 44 minutes driving)

Hastings is a beachbreak that works best in the winter when there’s south-westerley swell. There’s a fair bit of localism around here, so be respectful of other surfers.

EAST & WEST WITTERING, WEST SUSSEX

How far from Central London? 87 miles (1hr 47 minutes driving)

When it’s good, the Witterings can produce some great surf – you just have to be patient and catch it on a south-westerley groundswell with north-easterly winds.

West Wittering works best September through to April – get there one to three hours before high tide for the best conditions. East Witterings is a great longboarders wave with long rides when the swell is just right.

JOSS BAY, KENT

How far from Central London? 80 miles (1hr 48 minutes driving)

Joss Bay has been Kent’s main surf spot since the 1960s with left and right-handers breaking over sandbars and chalk reef. It works best when there is a strong northerly swell. Watch out for rips and shallow reef at low tide. Head down to Joss Bay Surf School for more information.

VIKING BAY, KENT

How far from Central London? 81 miles (1hr 42 minutes driving)

Viking Bay is the main beach for the pretty coastal town of Broadstairs. It’s a great second choice when Joss Bay is crammed with people. Head to the end of the harbour pier at low tide for a clean, mellow, longboarding friendly wave.

HAYLING ISLAND, HAMPSHIRE

How far from Central London? 74 miles (1hr 34 minutes driving)

Hayling Island is a very sheltered sand island with a long stretch of beachbreaks and a right-hand point in the Chichester harbour entrance. It only really works when there’s a huge south-west swell coming up the English Channel – but worth keeping an eye on.

LOWESTOFT, EAST ANGLIA

How far from Central London? 132 miles (2hr 50 minutes driving)

Lowestoft, the UK’s most easterly break, might be a bit further away from London than the south coast but the surf is often a little more consistent.

This popular beach break is usually pretty small but can pick up when a north-westerly swell is coming through. At high tide, it’s a hollow shorebreak and at low tide, it’s peels nicely off the pier.

Surf Spots for Londoners

As spring is here and the sun is out, we thought it was the right time to ask musician and part-time surfer Mark Thompson to share his favourite spots to swap the city for the sea.

1. Rest Bay, Porthcawl, South Wales

(3hrs 40mins from London)

South Wales may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of surfing or in fact the beach. However, Porthcawl offers a great surfing escape from London. Rest Bay hosts to the most consistent break, providing well-formed peaks. If you want a bit more shelter, head to Coney beach in front of the esplanade.

Perfect conditions: south to west swell, north-east (Coney) or east (Rest Bay) wind, all tides.

Getting there: We would recommend driving this one, as you can knock it off in under 4 hours. If that’s not an option then you can get the train to Newport, then onto Pyle before getting a short bus to Forge.

2. Croyde, Devon

(4hrs 30mins from London)

Thought after as one of the top surfing beaches in the UK, right up there in competition with Cornish waves. The waves are good on all tides, but especially at low tide. Croyde is perhaps a place for beginners to avoid in peak summer due to how busy it can be, but, if you have the confidence, you will love it!

Getting there: Again, we would recommend driving this one, it’s about 4 1/2 hours to north Devon. If that’s not an option then catch the GWR to Barnstaple then catch the 21 bus to Downend.

3. Bournemouth, Dorset

(2hrs 30mins from London )

This may be the least consistent spot for waves but there are loads of water sports in Poole Harbour (windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking) if the surf isn’t on. Well worth a trip.

5 beaches near London: Where to go for sun, sand, and surf

The British capital of London is known for many things - cultural treasures like Buckingham Palace and the British Museum , incredible museums and nightlife, and rich history. What it's not generally known as, though, is a beach destination. People come to London to enjoy everything living in a large city has to offer, not to enjoy warm and lazy days at the water's edge.

However, although London isn't blessed with tons of sandy beaches itself, there are some great beaches near London for those willing to travel. And a sunny day on a sandy beach makes the ideal escape from the city with its crowds and high prices. British weather can be unpredictable, but contrary to popular myth, it doesn't always rain in the UK. Summers can be quite hot, and the northerly latitude of the country means that summer days are long.

If the hectic pace of London life is getting to you and some time on the golden sands sounds like just the ticket, you're in luck. If you're willing to travel a little distance from London, either by car or by train, you can find some areas of outstanding natural beauty that offer soft sand, gentle waves, and lots of fun activities, too.

But before heading to the beach, make sure you drop off your bags at a Bounce luggage storage in London . Bring only what you need to enjoy the beach and leave the rest of your belongings behind, knowing they will be safely looked after until you return.

West Wittering Beach

The small and sleepy village of West Wittering in West Sussex is easy to reach from London. And although the town isn't known for having a ton of activities, the beach here is good enough to make the trip worthwhile all by itself.

Travel distance from London:

West Wittering beach is on the south coast of England, close to Portsmouth and a solid 90 miles from the center of London. It will take a little over two hours to reach by car and around two and a half hours to reach by a combination of train and bus.

Activity recommendations:

• Swimming: One of the best options for a genuine sandy beach close to London, this is a great place to cool off in the often frigid waters of the English Channel. No matter how hot the day is, a quick dip in the sea will soon cool you right down. The beach is also home to some colorful beach huts that you can rent and call your own for the day, making great places to change and store anything you've brought with you. However, the best bet is to leave your bags behind at a luggage storage in London before you head to the water.
• Surfing: When conditions are right, the sandy beaches of this area are some of the best beaches in the region for surfing. Although the beach doesn't have loads of amenities, it isn't hard to find surf lessons in this area if you've never tried the sport before. Plus, the handy beach huts are great places to change into a wetsuit and get ready to hit the waves.
• Birdwatching: This beach attracts many waders and other shorebirds, both migrants and year-round residents. Bring a pair of binoculars or a camera, and you're likely to see some interesting species of birds in the air and on the water while you relax on one of the best beaches the south coast offers.

Camber Sands

Located in Rye, East Sussex, the popular beach of Camber Sands is a unique environment to explore. Generally, the coast of East Sussex is just one pebbly beach after another, but Camber Sands, as the name suggests, is known for its stretch of welcoming sand. In fact, this beach is the only place that has actual sand dunes in East Sussex.

At around 80 miles south of London, you'll need to drive for approximately two hours from the capital to get to Camber Sands, depending on traffic. It's also possible to reach this beach by public transit by taking the underground from London Bridge to Ashford International , then taking a train from there to Rye. Depending on how long you wait between trains, this may be just as quick as driving.

• Kite surfing: This windswept beach offers near-perfect conditions for the adrenaline-inducing sport of kite surfing. Several local businesses offer kite surfing lessons so you can try this exciting pastime for yourself. And if you're an experienced aficionado, you can easily bring your own gear and head out on the waves yourself anytime the wind is right.
• RIB Tour: An RIB is a Rigid Inflatable Boat, and the small and lightweight vehicles are the ideal way to explore the coastline of Camber Sands. A knowledgeable guide will take you out on one of these fast boats to explore the coastline of East Sussex, and you should be prepared for a bouncy ride as you crash through the waves just off the sandy beach.
• Beachcombing: There are absolutely miles of beach to explore here, and the tide goes out a long way, making this one of the best destinations in the UK for beachcombing. Keep an eye out for beautiful shells left behind by the retreating tide, and bring your treasures home with you as a memento of a great time spent at Camber Sands.

Because there are so many outdoor activities to do on this beach, Camber Sands is not just a summer destination. Bring a wetsuit with you, and you can enjoy kite surfing or a boat tour at any time of year. In fact, windy winter weather is often the best time to go kite surfing.

Walton on the Naze

The soft and gently sloping sands of Walton on the Naze make it one of the best beaches near London for swimming, especially with kids. However, this resort town has made the most of its geographical location. Marketing itself as England's Friendliest Resort, Walton on the Naze offers a huge range of things to do beyond the usual beach activities.

Walton on the Naze lies on the east coast of England, around 80 miles north of the center of London. Depending on traffic, it could take a couple of hours to get there. Greater Anglia runs a train service from Liverpool Street Station, and this is one of those rare occasions where public transport might actually be quicker, taking about an hour and a half to reach Walton.

• Walton Pier: This traditional seaside pier is an excellent place to visit with kids, but is also ideal for the young at heart. You'll find an amusement park with all the usual rides, including a vintage carousel, plus exciting arcade games and fairground challenges to keep you entertained. The neon lights shine long into the night, so even after the sun has gone down, you can still enjoy yourself in this coastal resort.
• Naze Tower: This 86m-high tower is one of the top attractions in Walton on the Naze. Spread over eight floors, it offers incredible views of the coastline and also contains an art gallery and café so that you can soak up the local culture while you explore.
• Wildlife tours: Several specialist tour operators in Walton can take you out to explore the coast. An undisputed highlight is a quick trip to nearby Horsey Island, which is home to a resident population of seals. These adorable animals are always fun to watch, so nature lovers should definitely take a trip out here.

As a resort town, Walton on the Naze offers a variety of attractions that go well beyond the usual things to do at the beach. Although the town gets quieter in the winter, many of the restaurants and shops stay open, and with the tower and the pier to explore, Walton can be a good place to visit even when it's way too cold to swim in the ocean.

Bournemouth Beach

As one of the biggest cities on the south coast, Bournemouth has plenty to offer, including its beach. If you want to spend time on beaches near London but would also like to have the amenities of a major city nearby, this is a great option.

Bournemouth lies over 100 miles from central London. Driving will take around two and a half hours. One of the many advantages of Bournemouth being a big city is that it is easy to catch a train from central London to Bournemouth, and from there, take a bus to the beach.

• LV=KidZone: Bournemouth has been recognized as one of the most kid-friendly beaches in the whole of the UK, and this initiative has much to do with that. You can pick up a free wristband from the KidZone staff and give it to your child, then let them run free on the beach, knowing the wristband will help them get found if they get lost.
• Coastal Activity Park: The only park of its kind in the UK, Bournemouth Coastal Activity Park has many things to do. You can try bouldering on a specially designed course or rent kayaks and paddle out onto the waters of the beach. You can also hire beach huts here to give you a place to change and get out of the sun.
• Bournemouth Pier: The world-famous pier at Bournemouth is packed full of games to play, cafés to spend some time in, and wonderful water-view restaurants to enjoy. Dating back to the 19th century, this historic pier remains one of the most vibrant places in the area and an excellent location to spend some time on one of the best beaches near London.

Ruislip Woods

Coastal beaches are all well and good, but if you prefer freshwater or just want somewhere a little less well-known, Ruislip Woods might be just the ticket. Believe it or not, this park contains a beautiful golden sand beach which is a perfect place to cool off in summer.

Just 20 miles from the dead center of London, you can reach Ruislip Woods in less than an hour of driving. You can also get there using public transit, which will take around an hour.

• Swimming: Ruislip Lido is an artificial sandy beach located on a reservoir. It makes a perfect place to swim in the summer and cool off from the heat.
• Hiking: Ruislip Woods is also an excellent place for a walk, with some of the most popular hiking trails in London winding through this urban woodland. When you've had enough of one of the best and most surprising beaches near London, these hiking trails make great places to explore.

We've now been involved with the 'London Surfer Meet Up' for the past couple of years and have successfully run some pretty epic weekends to Cornwall and a few trips abroad to the likes of Costa Rica, Portugal and Morocco.

Welcome to the

London Surf Club

The London Surf Club was established in 1981, and is the only non-profit organisation for surfers in London ever since.

While we do much more, the key function of the club is about bringing people in London together and help them organise a drive to the waves to have a great surf. The difference with online groups is that we are a real physical club – you can meet people in a safe environment before committing to spend hours in a car with them, and the club provides a safeguard on people’s behaviour on trips - you don’t get that with online groups.

We pride ourselves on being a very active surf club and surf all through the year, with our most active time being when the waves are at their best; autumn and winter.

We surf all over... Yorkshire, Norfolk, Kent, Sussex, Dorset and Scotland as well as Wales, Devon and Cornwall as you might expect. You might think it crazy to have a surf club in London, but the advantage of being located in London is that we can head to whichever coast is the best depending on winds and waves.

We are not averse to driving hundreds of miles at a moments’ notice, and use our vast expertise of spots all over the country to get the best of what there is.

There have been several impersonators over the years, but we are the only not-for-profit London organization whose aim is to surf as much as possible, wherever and whenever the swell is.

As well as surfing all over the UK, we also band together in smaller groups for trips abroad, from Europe, to the Americas, Africa, Asia and beyond.

If you are a surfer living in London, then we guarantee that by joining us you will have chance to surf a lot more.

Who are we.

A great group of surfers all got together and realised we have something special.  We wanted to grow this spirit locally here in United Kingdom and globally.

We all agreed that through our club experiences we have met and continue to meet close friends that share the same ideals, passions and of course we surf a heck of a lot more through being a part of the club.

Global Surf Club consists of a growing number of keen kind spirited surfers that want to surf more, share the journey and save on all the resources it takes to surf as much as possible.

We consist of surfers of all genders and skill levels with drivers and passenger looking to plan trips locally and globally, enjoy social event and have as much fun as possible. We even have our own private app that offers surf forecasting, trip planning, event planning and the ability to connect with members in the safest way possible.

Many of our experienced members love to share the knowledge with new members of all surfing skill levels. Our spirit is to keep the stoke alive in and out of the water. If we are not surfing, we are supporting each other as a community, outdoor meet ups, social events and fitness activities like skating or wake boarding.

Surfers can be nomads. We all move around and sometimes we move further from the ocean. We need a way to connect and get back to the ocean to surf more!  If you want a plan a trip on a whim or at a future time you have the community and technology to do so.

Currently, many of us are Londoners dashing to the Cornwall coast, the North East and anywhere possible when the surf conditions are right.  We are growing our membership around in the United Kingdom and around the world.

Life is quite literally a beach with these beautiful beaches near London. Time to pack your swimmers, slap on the suncream (or wrap up in your windbreaker in the springtime!) and get ready to take on the golden sands.

Looking for a sunny getaway, but can’t afford the flight? Beach, please! There are plenty of stunning beaches within two hours of London , and we think – why the hell not make the most of that?

Yep, there really is a beach in London…

1. Ruislip Lido Beach , West London

Believe it or not, the closest beach to London is actually on the Piccadilly Line ! In Ruislip, west London, a 700-acre woodland nature reserve is home to a gorgeous natural lake, with a genuine sandy beach.

Woodland trails, a miniature train, and a pirate ship for kids are also on offer, but despite what you may see in the photo above, swimming is technically not permitted . There is, however, a very cool miniature train that’ll whizz you around the lake! The nearest stations are Ruislip and Northwood Hills , both in Zone 6 – it’s then a 20-minute walk. It does get pretty busy when the sun is out, mind, but doesn’t everywhere? Find out more here .

Beaches near London – Surrey

Landlocked Surrey may not have any seaside spots, but there’s one excellent beachy place in the heart of this tranquil county.

2. Frensham Beach

Another unlikely landlocked beach near London, this sandy spot faces onto Frensham Pond in the midst of a large common near Farnham . The water quality here is rated excellent, and you’re allowed to swim; there’s also a brilliant and bizarre sculpture park with 600 statues to explore within walking distance.

It’s also one of the best wild swimming spots around London, although do be aware of the fact that it’s quite popular with nudists …

📍 Approximately one and three-quarter hours from London (train from Waterloo to Farnham, then a 19 bus to St. Mary’s School and walk. Or for taxis and drivers, bang GU10 2QB into the satnav).

Beaches near London – Kent

Some of the closest beaches near London can be found barely an hour away in Kent. Here are our favourites!

3. Whitstable

Wonderful Whitstable is famous for seafood, but the beaches aren’t to be missed either. Within Whitstable itself, West Beach is a lovely spot for a wander, whilst Tankerton Beach , a little further east, offers unspoiled views of the sea and sky. Top it off with fresh seafood, and you’ve got a picture-perfect day out.

4. Sunny Sands

Regarded as one of the best beaches in the country for building sandcastles, you’d better pack your bucket and spade for this one. The clue’s in the name: it’s sandy, which makes it a bustling place in summer. Sadly though, your four-legged friend won’t be coming along, because dogs are banned from May to October . At least you can hang out with the mermaid statue as a consolation prize – not that the pooch will see it that way.

5. Botany Bay

Not to be confused with Botany Bay, Australia , this Kentish charmer is drop-dead gorgeous. Those imposing white cliffs have featured in many a ‘gram over the years, and it remains one of the most photographed beaches in the UK . Explore the rock pools for little sea creatures, or go fossil hunting to find something more impressive. No need to fork out on that trip down under, eh?

📍 Approximately two hours from London (train from Kings Cross St Pancras/Cannon Street to Margate).

6. Dungeness

A stone’s throw away from Camber Sands , you’ll find this place, which stands out amongst our beaches near London for its stark beauty. The largest expanse of shingle in Europe, Dungeness isn’t exactly the bathing costume and ice cream kind of beach. The attraction here is a bleak, striking kind of sort, as the vista is littered with ramshackle fisherman’s huts, a nuclear power station, and a set of concrete towers used to listen for incoming aircraft in the 1930s. Elegantly eerie.

7. Minnis Bay

A good spot for watersports , is Minnis Bay . Whether you try your hand at windsurfing or a more sedate session of sailing, Minnis Bay will keep you entertained. A massive expanse of the beach will disappear at high tide, but until then, you’ll have had time enough for fun in the sun.

📍 Approximately one and a half hours from London (train from St Pancras/Cannon Street/Victoria to Birchington-on-Sea).

8. Viking Bay

The sweeping beach nestled between the cliffs of Broadstairs is just one attraction of this seaside town, once a favourite destination of Charles Dickens . Its town-centre location means it’s never short of visitors, but if you can snag a spot on the golden sands, you’ll be very happy indeed.

9. Joss Bay

Another beach found on the tip of Kent, between Margate and Ramsgate , Joss Bay is a true stunner. Charming houses are nestled atop the chalky white cliffs, and the expanse of golden sand is like going to Cornwall without the train journey. Pick a sunny day and make this your top choice – it’s a top choice for frolicking on!

10. Greatstone Beach

Just around the headland from Dungeness is Greatstone Beach , another underappreciated gem. A sandy beach reminiscent of another neighbour, Camber Sands , Greatstone Beach boasts windswept dunes and an endless horizon where the English Channel disappears into the distance.

📍 Approximately two hours from London (train from St Pancras to Ashford International, then a pair of buses to the beach).

Beaches near London – Sussex

Whether to East Sussex or West Sussex , you’ll find beaches aplenty to soak up the sun and brave a dip in the English waters.

11. Brighton

London’s smaller, wannabe-edgy cousin, does have us beat on one front: the beaches. Wander along the pebbly beach, go paddle boarding, grab an ice cream (obviously), or brave the crowds on the world-famous pier. Expect this one to be busy on sunny days, but the beach is surely big enough for you to nab a spot and go paddling.

12. Camber Sands, East Sussex

Regularly voted as one of the best beaches in England, Camber Sands is so beautiful, it’s even featured in Hollywood films . A five-mile stretch of sand, backed by rolling sand dunes, you can definitely up your sandcastle game here. Alternatively, take kitesurfing lessons for no other reason than to look like a badass.

13. Eastbourne, East Sussex

The resort town of Eastbourne was another favoured Victorian seaside retreat; here, you’ll find a historic pier, numerous seafront hotels, and a rather charming beach. It’s also not far from the utterly enchanting Beachy Head (also happens to be my nickname during summer), which is as impressive a view as you’ll get on the south coast.

📍 Approximately one and a half hours from London (train from London Bridge/Victoria to Eastbourne).

14. Climping Beach, West Sussex

Forget the sandcastles here, because Climping Beach is mostly pebbles. It makes sunbathing a stretch, but this one will certainly be quieter than others on this list, so a seaside wander and a cheeky picnic are in the offing. The only warning I’d give is that, in the fight against beach erosion, the authorities installed a series of groynes, so the less mature in your party may spend their time sniggering at that. Goes with the territory, I suppose.

15. West Wittering Beach, West Sussex

For starters, it’s called West Wittering . Isn’t that just the most charming name? Aside from the name, this beach offers stunning views of Chichester Harbour , an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty filled with an abundance of wildlife. It also has some of the cleanest waters of any beach on this list, so if you’re brave enough for a dip in British waters, this is the spot.

16. Goring Beach, West Sussex

A dog-friendly beach all year round (although between May and September they’re limited to the stretch outside the Sea Lane cafe), Goring Beach is unsurprisingly a popular option. Paddleboarders are a common sight if the waters are calm, and the shingle beach attracts plenty of sunbathers when the sun shines.

📍 Approximately one and a half hours from London (train from Victoria to West Worthing).

17. Littlehampton West Beach, West Sussex

The East Beach , located on the town seafront, may get more of the traffic, but Littlehampton’s West Beach is arguably the superior option. Wander through the dunes, and you’ll find a stretch of beach that swaps the amusement arcades for unfiltered views of sun, sea, and sand.

Beaches near London – Dorset

Dorset is a little further afield for a beachy day trip, but there’s one incredible beach we just couldn’t miss off…

18. Bournemouth

As beaches go, you won’t find bigger than this one. Bournemouth Beach is a whopping eleven miles long, so it’s easy enough to escape the crowds here. Amongst golden sands of spots like Sandbanks, you’ll also find shops, gardens, hotels, and restaurants. Heaven is just a train ride away, and it’ll lead you to these gorgeously golden sands.

Beaches near London – Essex

It’s not all about the South Coast , you know! Essex sports a range of brilliant beaches, and they’re easy to reach on a train ride from London.

19. Walton-on-the-Naze

Lots to do here in Walton: wander along the second longest pier in England, climb the Naze Tower, or hire one of their luridly colourful beach huts. In a seaside town brimming with history, a day out here is the perfect chance to make some memories of your own.

20. Mersea Island

You’ll need to plan carefully to reach this one, as Mersea Island gets cut off from the mainland at high tide. The sunny South Beach is perhaps the best place to visit for a beachy day out, with the beach huts along Victoria Esplanade adding a splash of colour to proceedings. The island even has a vineyard , so you know where to head if you get thirsty!

21. Clacton Beach

Clacton-on-Sea boasts one of the best beaches on the Essex coast, and if it’s classic British holiday vibes you’re after, you’ll find them here. Once you’re tired of being sandcastles on the beach ( if you’re tired of sandcastles), you can stroll along the Marine Parade or wander out on Clacton Pier for arcade amusements and adventure golf. The beach huts are cute, too!

📍 Approximately one hour and forty minutes from London (train from Liverpool Street to Clacton-on-Sea).

22. Jaywick Beach

Down the coast from Clacton-on-Sea is another charming, slightly quieter beach. Jaywick Beach features grass dunes and breakwaters to protect it from the worst of the tides, and is overlooked by a row of Martello towers that once helped defend the English channel. With holiday villages found right nearby, however, it can be a busy one on summer weekends.

📍 Approximately two hours from London (train from Liverpool Street to Clacton-on-Sea, then a bus).

So when that wanderlust hits (and you don't fancy booking a flight to Porto) here's where to go for an easy weekend away, full of the UK's best  restaurants , museums, shops, stunning scenery and hotels.

When you want to get out of London without any faff, look no further than these gorgeous getaways – from cosy rural retreats to proper city breaks.

Great weekend getaways from London

1.  Edinburgh

The Fringe in August is of course when the city comes into its own, but Edinburgh’s brimming with things to do and see during the other 11 months of the year. Climbing Arthur’s Seat is obligatory, as is trekking to Edinburgh Castle – then an evening picnic on the Meadows before hitting the dancefloor at small but legendary venue Sneaky Pete’s. Come bedtime, Rabble has gorgeous mid-century ‘rough-luxe’ rooms in the heart of the New Town, with a top-notch restaurant downstairs. While we’re on the subject of food: pop-up-turned-bricks-and-mortar-venture Ting Thai Caravan is well worth a visit to feast on street food to a soundtrack of, say, The Stooges. Still got itchy feet? Glasgow’s less than an hour away by train.

Get there  One hour and 20 minutes by plane; four hours 20 minutes by train from London King’s Cross; around eight hours by car.

2.  The Yorkshire Dales

It’s probably the UK’s most famous national park, and for good reason – the Dales has staggering good looks and drama in spades. A weekend gives you plenty of time to roam the vast Bolton Abbey Estate near Skipton and be wowed by the Ribblehead viaduct and the natural amphitheatre of Malham Cove (see if you can spot the pair of resident falcons). The Dales are heaven if you live to stuff yourself silly – it’s well worth touring the Wensleydale Creamery, home of the famous cheese, and nosing around Theakston’s brewery. Speaking of pints, The Black Bull near Sedbergh is in a class of its own, with a fantastic, modern kitchen. It's also an inn, so you can kill two birds with one stone and rest your head here after enjoying their finest food and drink. 

Get there: two hours 15 minutes by train from London King’s Cross to Leeds; around three hours 30 minutes by car.

3.  The Peak District

The Lake District’s slightly gentler cousin has loads to recommend it: pretty market towns like Bakewell (home of the tart!), miles of undulating hills and stately Chatsworth, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. If the weather’s fine you could spend a whole weekend exploring the Peak District National Park on foot or on two wheels (bikes can be found at Blackwell Mill Cycle Hire), stopping off at the likes of the Devonshire Arms at Beeley for real ale and venison pie. After all that yomping about you’ll want a comfy spot to lay your head, and The Peacock at Rowsley, a historic country house near Bakewell, the plush four-poster beds will do the job nicely.

Get there two and a half hours by train from London St Pancras; around three hours by car.

4.  Padstow

This pretty-as-a-picture port really is the cream of Cornish. It’s synonymous with everyone’s favourite seafood chef, Rick Stein – get to his fish-and-chip shop early to beat the queue. Or for a slightly less-trodden path, head to Prawn on the Lawn for the best shellfish you can stuff your mouth with. Mosey around the independent galleries and boutiques, before taking the Black Tor Ferry over the water to Rock for a pint at The Mariners, now co-run by chef Paul Ainsworth. Hire bikes and cycle the 18-mile Camel Trail to Bodmin, sign up for a lesson at Waves Surf School, or just take a kite for a spin on the beach. All that sea air means you’ll sleep like a log – book one of Georgian townhouse St Petroc’s cool, contemporary rooms, or a luxe tipi at Cornish Tipi Holidays if you have a car.

Get there  three hours 43 minutes by train from London Paddington to Bodmin Parkway, and a bus; around five hours 30 minutes by car. 

5.  The Cotswolds

Think of the English countryside and chances are you think of the Cotswolds: 750-odd ridiculously green and pleasant square miles straddling Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. Each county has its own unique charm, but for a textbook weekend stick to Gloucestershire, land of Jilly Cooper, honey-coloured stone cottages and retired rock stars. Immerse yourself in nature: go leaf-peeping at Westonbirt Arboretum, take a clay pigeon-shooting lesson at the Cotswold Clay Club and coo over grazing cattle as you drive into Minchinhampton. Push the boat out with a stay at The Wild Rabbit in Kingham – a Pinterest board come to life – and don’t miss The Wheatsheaf Inn’s superlative Sunday roast.

Get there:  one hour 30 minutes by train from London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh; around two hours 30 minutes by car.

6.  The Gower Peninsula

It’s official: this south-westerly chunk of Wales is one of the UK’s best-looking spots (in 1956 it became the first area to be hailed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It’s very close to Swansea but much of its coastline feels pleasingly remote – beaches like pebbly Pwll Du, for instance, are only accessible by foot. Explore ruined Pennard Castle and Three Cliffs Bay, and if the waves are beckoning you sign up for a lesson at Progress Surf School near Llangennith. For a meal to remember, The Beach House at Oxwich Bay has a Michelin star and stunning seafood, while Surfside Cafe on Caswell Bay has been hailed as one of Britain’s best beachfront eateries. Come bedtime, head for award-winning barn conversion Slade Barn, which has beautiful Scandi-style interiors and a surfing beach a five-minute walk away.

Get there four hours by car. 

7.  Winchester

It’s always had the looks, but Winchester never used to have that much in the way of personality. Suddenly, though, this handsome cathedral city has become Hampshire’s coolest corner. The food’s fantastic, for starters: you can breakfast on cruffins at Hoxton Bakehouse, settle in for craft brews and tacos at Overdraft, then tuck into a chilli beef burrito pie while flipping through a vintage comic at Piecaramba. Winchester’s the perfect base to explore the rest of Hampshire from, too: nose around Jane Austen’s house in Chawton and join a tour at Hambledon, the UK’s oldest vineyard. Accommodation-wise, you’ll get the VIP treatment at Hotel du Vin – or try gorgeous boutique B&B Hannah’s.

Get there  one hour by train from London Waterloo; one hour 45 minutes by car.

8.  Bristol

The West Country’s undisputed foodie capital, Bristol’s got it all. From cheesecake at Hart’s Bakery to modern British plates in a shipping container at Box-E, you could easily spend 48 hours here doing nothing but eating. And then there are the sourdough toasties with a side of Gallic charm at Bar Buvette and Poco’s internationally influenced tapas (don’t miss the merguez with buttered kale at brunch). Make time to visit the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the gorgeously restored lido and Stokes Croft’s street art – and don’t forget to sip some legendary Exhibition cider in The Coronation Tap (it’s so strong it only comes in halves). Bed down in former merchant’s house Number Thirty Eight, or at the utterly lush Bristol Harbour Hotel.

Get there  one hour and 38 minutes by train from London Paddington or if you’re watching your wallet National Express coaches run from Victoria for just £3.90 one way; around 2 hours 30 minutes by car. 

9.  Oxford

Those dreamy spires are just the start of Oxford’s charms. As well as being an ancient university city with history in every brick, it’s a young, thriving cultural hub with plenty of great places to eat and drink (The Varsity Club's where it's at if you're after cool rooftop vibes). Tick off the Ashmolean and the Pitt Rivers Museum, then wander through Port Meadow and the University Parks, stopping off for burgers at The Rickety Press. Shop till you drop in the Covered Market, make like Inspector Morse with a pint of Wychwood Hobgoblin at The White Horse on Broad Street (one of the show’s filming locations), then turn in at boutique B&B The Glove House in Woodstock – or bunk up in the Artist Residence, a sweetly chic pub with rooms just outside the city.

Get there  one hour by train from London Paddington; one hour 30 minutes by car. 

10.  North Norfolk

With its vast skies and meandering waterways, North Norfolk has an eerie beauty all of its own. Start off with a visit to see the seals at Blakeney Point (the pups arrive in the winter), then head to Cromer, where you can tuck into the famous crab at The Jetty, stroll down the pier and stock up on local preserves at the farm shop. Make time to chuff along the North Norfolk Railway from Sheringham to Holt, and see if you can book a tour of Voewood House, an arts-and-crafts masterpiece. After all that fresh air, bed down at The Chequers Inn in Thornham, a gastropub with luxe rooms in a building that dates back to 1499. Or for a splurge, head inland to The Gunton Arms, a plush inn set in a deer park with a magnificently meaty menu.

The Jurassic Coast is a 95-mile stretch of jagged coastline in southern England. Famed for its beautiful beaches, iconic country landscapes and captivating coastal hiking paths, it’s the ideal setting for a weekend from London where being in nature is your top priority.

4. Suffolk Coast

At about 2.5 hours from London , the Suffolk coast is a great choice for a day trip from London, but it’s such a beautiful part of the world and so quiet that you’ll want to stay for a weekend.

Devon has a North Coast and South Coast to visit plus inland places like Dartmoor National Park , I spent 3 days in Devon exploring all 3 areas and it was enough time to see a lot!

Devon still has the Jurassic Coast , just like Dorset so walking From Branscombe to the pretty village of Beer along the coast is a popular thing to do. So is going to the Victorian seaside town of Sidmouth and visiting the nearby Donkey Sanctuary.

On the North Coast of Devon there is Woolacombe beach , a popular place for surfing and families to visit and it isn’t too far from the edge of Cornwall where Bude is, so you can do a Devon and Cornwall Road Trip in one go!

6. Brecon Beacons, Wales

A road trip from London to the Brecon Beacons will take you through some beautiful spots in England and Wales and it’s easily accessible via the M4!

Once in the Brecon Beacons National Park , you can spend a few days hiking. Popular hikes are to the top of Pen Y Fan , the biggest peak in South Wales and South England, there’s also a great Brecon 4 Waterfalls Walk .

Because you’ll have your car you should drive along the Black Mountain Road which offers stunning views and is known as the Top Gear Road.

For relaxing the Brecon Beacons is filled with lovely towns and villages like Hay on Wye which is perfect for those who like literature and unique places!

Afterwards, you can stop in Cardiff and check our Cardiff Castle and Cardiff Bay before going back to London!

7. Pembrokeshire, Wales

The drive from London to Pembrokeshire isn’t the shortest so this is best if you have at least 3 days or even 1 week to spend on a short trip from London.

However, Pembrokeshire is an amazing part of Wales and the most visited for holidays because of its endless beaches , a full coastal walk linking every beach, family fun activities, a huge amount of campsites, holiday parks and pretty Welsh villages.

Tenby is the most popular place to visit in Pembrokeshire and there are lots of cottages in Tenby and campsites near Tenby to stay.

Saun dersfoot Beach and Barafundle Bay are also popular beaches to visit.

Bosherston Lilly Ponds , Stack Rock Fort and St Govans Chapel are my recommended hidden gems in Pembrokeshire to visit to make your short trip from London to Wales really memorable!

8. Barry Island, Wales

Visiting South Wales is a great idea for a road trip from London as both places are either end of the M4 and takes around 3.5 hours by car .

One of the best places to visit on a road trip from London in Wales is Barry Island especially if you’re looking for a trip to the seaside for some tasty fish and chips and easy hikes around the coast. 

When going on a road trip to Barry Island from London, there’s cheap and all-day parking in close walking distance to the attractions and two accessible roads because it’s not an actual island (anymore).

The best things to do on Barry Island include riding the fairground , indulging on candy floss and stick-a-rocks, making sandcastles, renting a colourful beach hut and playing crazy golf on the promenade. Here are the best beaches in Barry !

9. Isle of Wight

One of the most unique places you can visit on a road trip from London is the Isle of Wight .

Located just a stones throw away from the southern coast of England is a great place to spend a weekend away with friends and family.

From a few amazing beaches like Ryde beach to unusual experiences like visiting the Garlic Farm – there are so many things to do on the Isle of Wright.

Don’t forget to drive the famous Military Road , full of stunning cliffs views and to visit the Needles – one of the main landmarks on the Isle of Wight.

10. Ashdown Forest, Sussex

Ashdown Forest is a great place to stop on a road trip from London. For those who don’t know, Ashdown Forest is the real-life inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood where Winnie the Pooh lives.

A. A. Milne stated that he believed Ashdown Forest was enchanted, and spent many hours wandering through it.

Today, visitors can also walk through various parts of the forest and even try to find different characters from the books. The most popular activity is playing Poohsticks by the river.

Nearby is, of course, Pooh Corner the sweetshop where A. A. Milne would take Christopher Robin.

In addition to getting out and enjoying nature, it is worth stopping by many of the surrounding towns. In  East Grinstead  you can learn about the town’s fascinating connection to WWII or stand on the Meridian Line.

Or head South to Fletching and take an alpaca for a walk. The beautiful Tudor Hever Castle is just a 20 minute drive away!

11. Camber Sands, East Sussex

Camber Sands in East Sussex is a wonderful day out or weekend away from London. The beach is over two miles long so there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out.

In summer time Camber Sands is a wonderful spot for a swim or a paddle. Children love to visit for sandcastle building or flying a kite.

In wintertime, the beach is popular with horse riders and dog walkers and the sunsets are magnificent making this an all year round road trip from London!

Camber Sands is located just outside the medieval town of Rye near the border with Kent. There are plenty of interesting walks in the area as well as some good places to buy a take away lunch.

If you don’t want to stray too far from the beach, there are several restaurants next to the beach although most of Camber Sands is backed by sand dunes, making it very picturesque.

Ensure you arrive early at Camber Sands, on warm days the car parks can get very busy so plan your London road trip accordingly.

12. Lyme Regis, Dorset

When looking for a trip out of London, there is no greater escape from the crowds than the beach. A few hours drive from London and you can find yourself in the tranquil county of Dorset.

Famed for the beaches, cliffs and fossils , the charming seaside town of Lyme Regis is a great place to base yourself.

Due to the long drive, I would recommend spending at least a night, or perhaps even a weekend, in Lyme Regis  on this road trip from Lonon.

There are many things to do in Lyme Regis , the beach here is naturally pebbled, and you will often see people searching under the cliffs for fossils. There is also a man-made sand beach, great for when the sun comes out.

The main street of Lyme Regis is dotted with independent shops , and there is also an old working mill. In the summer, there is also the opportunity to take a boat trip from the harbour, wither for sightseeing or fishing.

In addition to this, there are some wonderful walks in the area. Many offer amazing views of the southern coastline.

13. Kent Villages

Kent isn’t known as “The Garden of England” for nothing. Kent is home to many quaint villages, amazing landscapes, historic castles, award-winning seaside resorts and breathtaking coastline views. 

There are indeed many beautiful villages in Kent to visit within 1-2 hours drive of London. You can reach Aylesford village in an hour which is on the River Medway, 4 miles to the northwest of Maidstone.

There are free car parks for visitors where you can find a walking path which leads you to the village and the countryside around it making Kent one of the great London road trip ideas for scenic drives near London.

Or, you can go to Godmersham, where you can find Godmersham Park. Keep in mind this park is not like any other parks, it is featured on 10 pounds notes. 

Fordwich, the smallest town in the UK With a population of 381 is also located in Kent on the River Stour. You can rent a boat and go on the river or just have a walk around. 

For the coastal walk, you can drive to Broadstairs, a pretty town on the Isle of Thanet, where you can visit Charles Dickens’ favourite holiday spot.

14. Peak District

Nestled between the big cities of Manchester, Sheffield and Derby, The Peak District National Park is the oldest National Park in the UK.

It’s only a 3-hour drive from London , and standing on the craggy edge of one of the Peak District’s escarpments, overlooking the expansive landscape of green rolling hills and quaint villages below, you will feel a million miles away from life in the Capital.

Grab your Ordnance Survey map and hiking boots and head for a hike in the hills. Whilst Mam Tor in the North, or Dovedale Stepping Stones in the South, are popular hiking destinations, perhaps head to Curbar Edge or the rolling hills around Monyash, which will be much quieter.

Alternatively, bring your bike in your car and cycle along the miles upon miles of disused railway tracks that criss-cross the National Park. These have been transformed into gravel paths that are entirely traffic-free.

Whilst it is very doable to do a day trip from London with an early start and late finish, a visit to the Peak District is all about connecting with nature and slowing the pace.

So really, you want to book in at least a full weekend to reap the benefits of this road trip from London.

15. New Forest

The New Forest is a great place for a day trip from London or weekend road trip from London. There are several campsites in the area, where you can truly unwind and enjoy being close to nature.

You can take bikes with you or rent some, as the area has some great cycling trails. It is also a good destination for people, who want to go hiking near London .

You will most likely spot some wild horses on your outing. They are a common sight in the New Forest National Park. You can also book horse riding lessons and tours at most stables.

In the summer wild swimming is quite popular. There are several rope swings hung up by locals along the Lymington River.

Brockenhurst has a nice little area by the river, which is suitable for small children to paddle in the water. Families often come for a picnic at the river bank so this is a great option if you’re wanting to take a family road trip from London.

16. Cornwall

A Cornwall road trip is best enjoyed on a long weekend road trip from London.

National Trust members can park for free in the specified car parks scattered around Cornwall, and the coastal paths are the best way to see the rugged Cornish coastline. 

One of the most scenic routes on the Cornish coastal path is the route from Sennen Cove to Lands End , which gives walkers views over the beautiful Sennen beach and harbour area.

It’s the perfect spot to see Cornish wildlife, including red-billed choughs, peregrines, kestrels and grey seals. Further along the Mayon Cliffs coastal path, you can also walk to Maen Castle and see the lighthouses/shipwrecks lining the path. 

As well as the coastal path walks, Cornwall has a plethora of beaches and coves to visit where you will find secluded spots to enjoy minus the other tourists.

Even tourist favourite, Kynance Cove has a variety of coves and rock pools to enjoy away from other tourists. The coastal path from Kynance Cove to Lizard Point takes 47 minutes to walk or 15 minutes to drive. 

Timing is often everything when it comes to visiting places like Cornwall, and getting up early to explore or visiting the beaches in the late afternoon/early evening are a great way to get around and see the sights without hordes of other tourists.

Cornwall has various National Trust and English Heritage sites to visit, including the legendary Tintagel, as well as waterfalls and green areas to visit. 

There’s no doubt that Cornwall is a tourist hotspot, it is the place to visit if you want to get a taste of The Med without leaving England, but there are plenty of places to visit minus the crowds so looking into a London to Cornwall road trip !

17. Norwich

Norwich is the perfect road trip destination from London as it is not as far as you think, just over 2 hours from Central London . It is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the country, and has a thriving independent food and shopping scene.

Home to one of the largest open-air markets in the UK , a 12th-century castle, two cathedrals and a maze of cobbled stone streets.

It is a city that offers everything! After a day of exploring there are plenty of pubs, cocktail bars and restaurants serving local produce for you to enjoy.

Norwich also provides a great starting point to discover some of Norfolk’s most stunning countryside.

The beautiful North Norfolk coastline stretches for over 100 miles and things to do in Norfolk include discovering gorgeous beaches, adorable coastal villages and some amazing wildlife – the seals live here all year round!

Closer to the city you can find the Norfolk broads . A man-made warren of waterways which provide beautiful views and a great day trip out! A perfect weekend getaway with a mix of country and city.

18. Stonehenge

A Stonehenge day trip from London is both easy and fun because you can easily drive from London to Stonehenge and I recommend stopping in Salisbury, a town with a wonderful cathedral, along the way.

Once you get there, you may be surprised by the fact you can’t actually enter the stone circle, but only see it from a distance.

The only time of the year when you can enter is Summer Solstice when you can access Stonehenge for free on a first come first served basis to see the sunrise aligning perfectly with the rocks.

All other times of the year, you can learn about Stonehenge at the visitor centre, where you’ll discover theories about how and why it was built, plus see a 360° audiovisual view, allowing you to stand virtually in the centre of the stone circle and see how it changes in different seasons. 

Visiting Stonehenge, touring the visitor centre and admiring the stone circle from different angles takes about 3/4 hours, making this destination ideal for a day trip from London by car.

For a weekend away, you could add Salisbury and nearby Avebury so you have enough to do to fill two days on your road trip from London.

19. Glastonbury

Most people think of the festival when they hear the name ‘Glastonbury’; few know that the town is well worth visiting in its own right. If you like nature, history and unique shops, you’re in the right place!

Quirky Glastonbury is a fantastic day trip from London or weekend road trip from London – it’s manageable in a day, but if you have time, it’s best to camp out nearby, or stay in one of the lovely guesthouses in town to make it a weekend trip. 

The drive from London to Glastonbury enjoys lush green scenery as you cross the beautiful rural counties of Wiltshire and Somerset.

Glastonbury is surrounded by nature, and plenty of hiking opportunities can be had close to the town, including the famous Glastonbury Tor, a hill that is awash with Pagan and Christian legend and has spring water that is said to be healing running out from underneath.

In the town, there are the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, and lots of shops, where amongst the usual clothes and books, you can also buy tarot cards and crystal balls!

20. Avebury

Take a day trip from London and visit the largest stone circle in the world at Avebury in Wiltshire. Avebury Stone Circle has been there for since between 2850 and 2200 BC.

Avebury is set on a mound with a ditch running around it. The area has been used for farming for nearly 6,000 years and sheep still roam round the stones. Unlike Stonehenge, you can get up close and even touch the stones.

If you want a break from walking, you can stop for a bite to eat in the café at the barn or the Red Lion Pub, or have a look around the shops in the village.

The Alex Keiller Museum in the Museum Barn gives you an insight into the history of Avebury and the archaeological finds that have been made.

Walking tours around the stones can be booked at the museum too. The stones are free to walk round, though there is a charge for entering the Museum.

There is a large carpark which costs £4 per day for non-National Trust members and is free for members. The ticket machine only takes coins, so make sure you have change with you. There is parking for the disabled in the Old Farmyard.
