Around the World Tours & Travel Guide

Around the World Attractions & Landmarks Guide

World travel is truly one of the most unforgettable experiences. As you visit multiple countries and continents, you gain a deep understanding of hundreds of cultures and forge wonderful connections with people around the world.

A small ship or 'expedition' cruise is one of the most popular modes of travel for a trip around the world. Many young people opt for overland tours to see the world because of budget and the community style. They usually use a few different modes of travel like trains or buses or join small group tours to individual destinations.

You can also design a custom round-the-world trip to suit your preferences for price, duration, accommodation, and more. Choose the countries you wish to visit and super-personalize your world tour for the activities you enjoy.

Luxury Around the World Trips

Imagine waking up in lavish four or five-star accommodations, imbibed with unmatched comfort and elegance. Think boutique lodges nestled in scenic landscapes to high-end homestays steeped in local charm!

That's the essence of our exclusively curated around-the-world luxury tours. Choose one of our private guided world tours to explore iconic landmarks, access hidden gems, and indulge in gastronomic experiences redefining culinary pleasure.

Raise the bar for your travel experience—personalize your world trip and enjoy unparalleled service at every stop tailored to your preferences.

How Long Should You Go For?

A round-the-world trip typically takes longer than a week or two. Your world tour should not be much shorter than one month.

With one month to go around the world, you'll probably stick to one broad region. Long trips are a great way to really learn the nuances and extensiveness of human and geological history and how pronounced they can be in a relatively small area. You'll also gain a unique insight into fascinating cultural similarities and differences.

Most trips around the world are a bit longer than one month, typically between two and four months. The number of countries and continents you'll visit on your world tour can vary quite a bit, mainly based on how you get from place to place and the length of excursion allotted for by the itinerary.

How Much Does a Trip Around the World Cost?

One of the benefits of traveling on a package tour around the world is the cost-cutting aspect. Typically, some of your meals will be covered, along with a good amount of transportation and almost all accommodations (this is an excellent reason to book a small ship cruise).

In addition, your tour will have many activities planned to explore the culture and history of each destination, as well as enjoy the natural beauty with hikes and other exciting outdoor ventures. These activities are not always included in the price, which can be a good thing as it allows you to join as many or as few activities as you'd like, depending on your preferences.

Typically, airfare to and from the start city and ending city to your final destination is not included in the tour price, but after that, you can expect to save a lot in expenses.

Note that you'll be around the same group of people for a very extended period, and your ability to be flexible in each destination will be limited. If you want to stay longer or shorter, this isn't typically an option.

Planning a Trip Around the World on Your Own

Traveling around the world on your own is an entirely different ball game. Transportation and accommodation are usually challenging to budget around. Budget hotels can help; however, finding a good deal can be tiresome. Travel agents can help, but this typically comes with a premium.

Certain airlines offer special round-the-world tickets, which could be an excellent way to book an independent trip around the world if you have miles to cash in. Otherwise, you're a bit stuck with the one-way ticket route. Try booking smaller airlines and shorter flights to keep costs manageable.

Choosing your destination and activities also requires a ton of research. You could spend a hefty amount of time trying to plan this yourself.

How To Pack for a Trip Around the World?

Ironically, you will be better off packing less than more for a longer journey. As you'll be on the move, you want a lighter suitcase and backpack to deal with. It's both more comfortable to move and far easier to store.

That's one significant benefit of traveling by cruise when you go around the world: the luxury of only unpacking once and being able to do laundry on board. You can lock your stateroom, so there's no worry about theft as you roam the boat and enjoy your shore excursions.

  • Winter vs Summer Weather:    Since your tour around the world is likely to cross hemisphere lines more than once, you may experience warm highs and icy lows during your trip — bring clothing that can layer easily.
  • Shoes:    Footwear can easily become a packing challenge since it can take up a lot of space in suitcases. Choose shoes according to the planned activities and terrains. Pack a versatile selection: a pair for relaxation, one for hiking, another for city strolls, and one for a more refined option.
  • Dress Like a Local:    The beauty of a trip around the world is the opportunity to visit many far-flung places with diverse cultures and ways of life. You may encounter many different cultures, some with specific dress expectations. For example, in most Middle Eastern countries, expect to dress modestly—cover shoulders and legs and keep a scarf handy for covering your head. A similar dressing is also a good rule for touring many religious establishments.

Why conduct research?

From the outset, our Members realised that hard economic facts were needed to help governments and policymakers truly understand the potential of Travel & Tourism. Measuring the size and growth of Travel & Tourism and its contribution to society, therefore, plays a vital part in underpinning WTTC’s work.

What research does WTTC carry out?

Each year, WTTC and Oxford Economics produce reports covering the economic contribution of our sector in 185 countries, for 26 economic and geographic regions, and for more than 70 cities. We also benchmark Travel & Tourism against other economic sectors and analyse the impact of government policies affecting the sector such as jobs and visa facilitation.

SERVICES: SECTOR BY SECTOR

Tourism and travel-related services

Tourism plays an important role for nearly all WTO members, especially in terms of its contribution to employment, GDP, and the generation of foreign exchange. Tourism-related services are typically labour-intensive, with numerous links to other major segments of the economy, such as transport, cultural and creative services, or financial and insurance services.

Tourism and travel-related services include services provided by hotels and restaurants (including catering), travel agencies and tour operator services, tourist guide services and other related services.

A crucial aspect of trade in tourism services is the cross-border movement of consumers (mode 2). This permits a variety of workers, including those in remote areas, to become services exporters — for instance, by guiding tourists, performing in local events, or working in tourist accommodation. While digitalisation offers great potential for many aspects of tourism services, the sector continues to depend highly on the cross-border movement of both customers and employees, and remains strongly linked to transport services.

Current commitments and exemptions

Tourism commitments have been undertaken by over 133 WTO members, more than in any other service sector. This indicates the desire of most members to expand their tourism sectors and to increase inward foreign direct investment (FDI) as part of their efforts to promote economic growth.

The level of commitments by sub-sector varies widely for tourism and travel-related services. Commitments on services provided by hotels and restaurants are the most frequent, with a significantly smaller number of WTO members making commitments on travel agencies and tour operator services. Only about half of members with commitments on tourism have included tourist guide services, and only a few members have made commitments for the “other” tourism services category.

  • Schedules of WTO Members with Specific Commitments on Tourism Services

Treatment of the sector in negotiations

Tourism services, like other services covered by the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), were included in the services negotiations that began in 2000.

One of the earliest documents was a proposal for a GATS Annex on Tourism, originally sponsored by the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Honduras ( S/C/W/127 and S/C/W/127/Corr.1 ). The proposal had two main aspects: more comprehensive treatment of the tourism sector (with respect to classification issues), and the prevention of anti-competitive practices. As part of the plurilateral process, a joint request was made by a group of developing countries, asking for improved tourism commitments for all modes of supply.

Tourism, Trade and the WTO: A Joint Communication from UNWTO, WTO, ITC and WTTC

PR No. : PR18072

Geneva, Switzerland, 8 October 2018 – T he World Tourism Organization (UNWTO  ), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), and the International Trade Centre (ITC) have issued the joint communication "Tourism, Trade and the WTO" affirming the importance of enhanced global cooperation on trade & tourism, and encouraging greater participation of the tourism sector in trade policy.

Released to coincide with the 2018 WTO Public Forum, this joint communication aims to highlight the importance of tourism, while also emphasizing the crucial role of the WTO in ensuring the smooth and predictable functioning of trade, including for the tourism sector.

According to WTTC, between 7 and 19 million new jobs could be created in the G20 countries alone by investing in biometrics and new airport infrastructure to make existing terminal facilities and processes more efficient, more secure and seamless for passengers. In addition, GDP associated with travel and tourism grew one and a half times more than the world economy in 2017, at 4.6%, and the projections indicate that the sector will continue to outpace global economic growth.

Under the main theme of “Trade 2030”, the WTO Public Forum's sub-themes for 2018 are sustainable trade, technology-enabled trade, and a more inclusive trading system.  Projections extending to 2030 indicate that the tourism sector is expecting continued rapid growth, with international tourist arrivals worldwide expected to increase by 3.3% per year to reach 1.8 billion by 2030, according to UNWTO’s long-term forecast report Tourism Towards 2030 .  At the same time, the market share of emerging economies, which has already increased from 30% in 1980 to 45% in 2016, is expected to reach 57% by 2030, equivalent to over 1 billion international tourist arrivals.

It must be further emphasized that the international trading system has enormous effects on international tourism, not only with regards to the transport of tourists across borders, but also the procurement of the multitude of goods and services –from safari jeeps to restaurant chefs to hotel accounting software – essential for the supply of international tourism

To shed further light on developments in the tourism sector, a dedicated session was held at the 2018 WTO Public Forum on 3 October from 14:00-15:30. Organized by the WTTC, UNWTO, ITC and WTO, " Innovation and digital transformation for sustainable and inclusive tourism " featured a top-level panel of speakers whom explored how to prevent disruptions and ensure the continued functioning of the global tourism industry.  These included Franck Mwe di Malila, Ministre of Tourism, Democratic Republic of Congo;  Gloria Guevara Manzo, President and Chief Executive Officer, WTTC;  Jaime Alberto Cabal Sanclemente, Deputy Secretary-General, UNWTO;  Arancha González, Executive Director, ITC; and Torbjörn Fredriksson, Chief, ICT Policy Section, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.  The session was moderated by Dale Honeck, Senior Counsellor, WTO’s Trade in Services and Investment Division.

This joint communication follows earlier tourism & trade-related publications by the four organizations, including:

WTTC is the body which represents the Travel & Tourism private sector globally. Members consist of CEOs of the world’s T&T companies, destinations, and industry organisations engaging with Travel & Tourism. WTTC has a history of 25 years of research to quantify the economic impact of T&T in 185 countries.

Travel & Tourism is a key driver for investment and economic growth globally. The sector contributes US$8.3 trillion or 10.4% of global GDP, and accounts for 313 million jobs or one in ten of all jobs on the planet.

For over 25 years, WTTC has been the voice of this industry globally. Members are the Chairs, Presidents and Chief Executives of the world’s leading, private sector Travel & Tourism businesses, who bring specialist knowledge to guide government policy and decision-making and raise awareness of the importance of the sector.

WTTC’s annual Global Summit brings together over 800 delegates to discuss the opportunities, challenges and issues facing the industry, while its Tourism for Tomorrow Awards recognise the industry’s power to be a positive force in sustainability. Next year’s WTTC Global Summit will take place in Seville, Spain on 3-4 April 2019.

Volunteering through Worldpackers has given me the greatest experiences of my life. I would scream it from the rooftops. Good job, guys; you're a blessing to the earth.

As my first experience as a worldpacker, I wanted to do this more often, to travel, meet more and more people, learn about their culture and their ways of thinking. I recommend that everyone who wants to grow as a person and really wants to learn more about this world take part in volunteering. Volunteering is now my new hobby.

The platform is very organized and easy to read, which helps find the most suitable opportunities. But more importantly, the way that reviews are handled and that previous Worldpacker volunteers are listed on posts makes this website the most trustworthy one in my opinion, which for a solo female traveler is paramount.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Israel weighs response after Iran fires missile barrage

Kathleen Magramo and Antoinette Radford, CNN

Israeli war cabinet will meet today to weigh response to Iran's attack

From CNN's Ami Kaufman

This handout photo shows the Israeli war cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, center, holding a meeting in Tel Aviv, Israel, on April 14. Portions of this photo have been blurred by the source.

Israel's war cabinet will meet today at 2:00 p.m. local time to discuss its response to Iran's unprecedented attack on Saturday night, an Israeli official has told CNN.

An hours-long war cabinet meeting ended Sunday night without a decision on how to respond.

The cabinet is determined to act – but has yet to decide on the timing and scope.

Some background: Israel war cabinet minister Benny Gantz previously said that Israel will “exact a price from Iran in a way and time that suits us.”

But Israeli President Isaac Herzog told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the country is not seeking war after Iran's attack and "balance is needed in this situation."

An Israeli official told the US that it's not looking to significantly escalate the showdown with Iran, a senior Biden administration official told reporters.

“I think Israel made clear to us they're not looking for a significant escalation with Iran. That's not what they're looking for. They're looking to protect themselves and defend themselves,” the senior administration official said.

German leader warns Iran against further escalation in the Middle East

From CNN's Stephanie Halasz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaks to the press in Shanghai, China, on April 15.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned Tehran against further escalation in the Middle East after Iran's attack on Israel.

Scholz said the attack "is a serious escalation of the situation and is in no way acceptable, understandable or tolerable.”

"We strongly condemn the Iranian attack and warn against any further escalation. Iran must not continue down this path. At the same time, it is absolutely clear to us that we stand in solidarity with Israel, which has every right to defend itself after the terrible attack by Hamas on Israeli citizens in October last year,” he said.

Israeli soldiers wounded by explosion near northern border

From CNN's Ami Kaufman

Four soldiers were wounded during overnight operations near Israel's northern border, its military said.

One of the soldiers was severely wounded, according to the military.

Two soldiers had moderate injuries, and another soldier was lightly wounded as a result of an explosion from an unknown source, it said.

African countries urge restraint after Iran's attack on Israel

From CNN’s Eve Brennan in London

Israel's Iron Dome air defense system was launched to intercept missiles fired from Iran on April 14.

Several African countries have expressed concern after Iran’s attack on Israel.

South Africa emphasized that all parties must "avoid any act that would escalate tensions in a particularly fragile region" and urged the world not to forget the war in Gaza.

“South Africa has continuously stressed that irrespective of whether states believe that their use of force is lawful, it is never wise to resort to war as inevitably, it is ordinary people who bear the brunt of conflict," its Department for International Relations and Cooperation said.

Nigeria called on Iran and Israel “to exercise restraint” and “avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East,” its Foreign Ministry said.

“In this critical period, it behoves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security.”

Kenya's President William Ruto said the attack "only serves to aggravate an already delicate situation in the Middle East.”

Ruto said Iran's attack "should be condemned by all peace loving countries” and that Kenya “urges Israel to show utmost restraint.”

Somalia urged all parties “to immediately halt further escalation and exercise maximum restraint,” Somalia’s foreign ministry said.

The ministry said rising hostilities threaten regional stability and global security, and emphasized the need for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Iran reiterates that attack on Israel was a "legitimate" response

From Amy Cassidy in London

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani speaks at a press conference in Tehran, Iran, on January 8.

Iran’s attack on Israel was a “legitimate” and “responsible” reaction, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani reiterated on Monday.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran, Kanaani said “military action was the last resource which exhausted all the diplomatic channels.”

Kanaani said Iran is not looking at “intensifying tension” in the region but will take “proportionate action” to defend itself.

Tehran has said the strikes over the weekend were a retaliation for the bombing of an Iranian diplomatic building in Damascus on April 1.

The strikes were the first time the Islamic Republic had launched a direct assault on Israel from its soil, escalating tensions in the Middle East stoked over the war in Gaza.

China's response to Iran's attack on Israel highlights its regional role

From CNN's Nectar Gan and Simone McCarthy

Objects are seen in the sky above Jerusalem after Iran launched drones and missiles towards Israel on April 14.

China has voiced “deep concern” over escalating tensions in the Middle East after Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel.

The attack raised the prospect of a wider conflagration in a region where Beijing has pledged to play peacemaker and promote its own security vision.

Iran's attack has pushed the shadow war between the two regional foes into the open. Western allies are urging Israel to de-escalate as fears grow of an all-out regional war – a scenario Washington has sought to enlist Beijing’s help to avoid.

The latest flare-up of tensions has again raised questions over how much leverage China wields over Iran – and whether Beijing is willing to turn its political capital into influence.

“On paper, China has a great deal of potential leverage over Iran,” said William Figueroa, an assistant professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

China has been Iran’s biggest trading partner for the past decade and buys 90% of Iran’s oil exports, providing a lifeline to Tehran against US sanctions. Chinese companies also provide Iran with security and surveillance equipment.

But it is difficult for China to pull these levers to influence Iran’s behavior, Figueroa said.

Jordan calls on all parties to de-escalate after Iran's attack on Israel

From CNN's Kathleen Magramo

Jordan's Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi speaks at the UN Headquarters in New York on October 24.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi  said that Amman does not want a spillover conflict in the Middle East after Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel.

He stressed that all parties to the conflict should focus on the rights of Palestinians in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Iran's ambassador in Amman was summoned on Sunday after Jordan intercepted Iranian drones over its airspace.

Safadi said its response would be the same whether the threat had originated from Iran, Israel or any other country.

"Our longstanding policy, whatever objects that go into our skies, violates our airspace that we believe that pose a danger to Jordan, we will do whatever it means to end that threat," Safadi told CNN's Becky Anderson.

When asked whether Iran warned Jordan before the attack, Safadi said "it was no secret to everybody" that the Iranian retaliation was "imminent."

"We don't want conflict with Iran. We don't want conflict and the whole region," Safadi said.

Iran's attack has heightened regional tensions, with Safadi noting that the continuation of the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank could lead to further destabilization.

Safadi said that when the war in Gaza ends, parties can "work on a two-state solution that would fulfil the legitimate rights of the Palestinians to freedom and statehood."

Zelensky says Iran's attack on Israel proves modern air defense systems save lives

From CNN staff

An anti-missile system operates after Iran launched drones and missiles toward Israel, as seen from Ashkelon, Israel, on April 14.

Iran's attack on Israel proves that modern air defense systems save lives, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said late Sunday following Tehran's large-scale drone and missile attack on Israel .

According to the Israeli military, the vast majority of more than 300 projectiles — including around 170 drones and 120 ballistic missiles — fired toward Israel by Iran and its proxies were intercepted by aerial defense systems and Israeli allies.

"Modern air defense systems are capable of protecting lives — this was demonstrated in the Middle East when aviation and air defense shot down Iranian missiles and Shahed drones aimed at Israel," Zelensky said.

Some background: Zelensky said last week that Ukraine “will lose the war” on its soil if the United States Congress does not approve military aid to help it defend  Russia’s invasion .

Zelensky’s warning comes as Congress has for months stalled on a package of aid for Ukraine, leaving Kyiv to battle ammunition shortages while Russia pounds Ukrainian cities with  missiles .

The US Senate  passed  a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill with assistance for Ukraine and Israel in February, but House Speaker  Mike Johnson  has so far refused to hold a vote on passing the package for Ukraine.

The delay in Congress had boosted Russian confidence, Zelensky said Sunday.

Israeli authorities release 150 Gaza detainees including ambulance crews, Palestinian officials say

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Eyad Kourdi

Israeli authorities have released 150 people previously detained in Gaza, according to the Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and Borders on Monday.

Two of the detainees were ambulance workers for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, PRCS said.

They were held for 50 days after being detained at a military checkpoint while trying to evacuate patients from Al-Amal Hospital in the city of Khan Younis on February 25, according to a PRCS statement .

“The occupation continues to detain 6 of the association’s crews to this day, and their fate remains unknown,” PRCS said.
