I’ve been a Master 50-ton Captain in the St. Pete area for 5 years now. I started my career as a banana boat captain but quickly moved up the ranks. I ran a 47ft power catamaran 50 passenger vessel for 2 years before taking a job running smaller 6 passenger vessels. Most of my time is spent on the water here in the beautiful St. Petersburg area. Mostly focused on tours out to shell key preserve, outback key, Irma’s pass, Bunces Pass, and Egmont key.

My main focus out here is to make my guests feel as comfortable as possible. I quickly realized smaller 6-passenger boats are where I thrive. I just love engaging in the activities that we do on the boat and sharing my love and knowledge of the sea.

There's a huge choice of boats and operators, ranging from small private launches to multi-level river cruisers, so you can join a timetabled tour or organize your own if you're travelling in a small group. Nearly all boats, however, follow one of a few tried and tested routes along St. Petersburg's rivers and canals, as well as some longer routes out to the city's suburban visitor attractions. While it may be better to book a boat trip in advance, especially in high season during the White Nights , it is normally quite possible to turn up at one of the moorings in the city center (where Nevsky Prospekt crosses the Fontanka River, the Griboedov Canal, or the Moika River; in the Mikhailovsky Garden ; on the Admiralty or Palace Embankments; or around the Peter and Paul Fortress) and join a tour immediately, day or night (after midnight nearly all boats offer trips out into the Neva River to watch the bridges opening). Most trips will be conducted by a tour guide or accompanied with a recorded audio-guide. If you require an English-language guide, many companies offer the service, along with several other foreign languages, but you will need to book in advance.

There’s no better way to appreciate the extraordinary beauty of St Petersburg than from the comfortable seat of one of the city’s canal cruisers. Gliding along the river Neva, past Baroque facades and under elegant bridges, gives you the chance to experience St Petersburg as Peter the Great, founder of the city, meant it to be seen. (His idea was to model the city after Amsterdam ; in Peter’s time there were no roads or bridges, only canals).

Canal cruises start at points at major boat stations all over the city. The most reliable, and largest boats, are at the intersections of Nevsky Prospect with the Moika, Griboyedev and Fontanka Rivers. The routes may vary, but a standard 60–90-minute ride will take in the major highlights of the historic centre.

Hiring a private boat is also an option and can be an excellent way to get around the city.

Getting there & doing it

Canal boat stations abound in the city, usually at the intersections of major canals and streets. The Moika River Embankment or Anichkov Bridge are good places to begin and/or end a cruise.

Tickets are on sale at the boat station. Private boat tours can be booked in advance; the company will usually collect you from your hotel and drop you back after the tour (using public transport is included in the price, a private transfer is more). Alternatively, you can book on the spot – private boats go from the same stations as the public boats, although this depends on availability.

When to do it

Navigation begins in May and runs through September. Boats run almost 24 hours during the summer months; late evening and night is very popular during summer and the White Nights, and fares can increase.

The best time for photographers is towards the end of daylight (which in June and July is around 10 pm), when the city is bathed in a magical twilight glow.
