So the day finally came when my new Protrek PX-10 350W Electric Scooter arrived. I was eagerly anticipating it’s arrival and had planned the following tests to determine it’s quality:

• Range – How far I could go on one battery charge
• Comfort – I opted for the larger 10 inch wheels
• Sturdiness – Being able to ride confidently without feeling it was going to break in half
• Motor Power – Top speed and acceleration

Putting it together was a piece of cake. Simply screw on the left and right handle bars then tighten up the folding mount plate with the Allen Key provided and you’re good to go!

The controls are very simple. To turn on, simply hold the power button down for 3 seconds. There are 3 gear modes to choose from which dictates top speed to coincide with the rider’s ability – Beginner (15km/h), Normal (20km/h) and Sports Mode (25km/h). Press the function button to toggle between the three modes. For me there was no question I would be using the Sports’s Mode straight up which is indicated on the LED screen by a “D” in red!

To accelerate you need to push off to give the scooter momentum (for safety reasons) and then push down on the throttle (lever) with your right thumb. That’s when you feel the motor kick-in giving you a burst of power. From that point on you can control your speed solely with the throttle and the brake located on your left handle bar.

The rear ventilated disc brakes provide efficient stopping power. I found if going down very steep hills, I would also need to apply the rear fender brake (with foot) simultaneous with disk brake to pull-up quickly.

If you maintain the speed for 6 seconds, the scooter will automatically go into cruise control mode which gives your thumb a well deserved break. To deactivate just tap on the brakes or flick the throttle down. It’s important to tell kids about this feature before they ride!

Test Ride Results

My first impressions were very positive. The larger wheels provided a very stable platform and I instantly felt in control. Unlike other Scooters, the PX-10 feels strong and sturdy with very little vibration and movement in the handle bars.

I was also impressed with the power. The PX-10 performed well with excellent acceleration off the mark and good handing on rough terrain and moderate inclines.

The biggest surprise for me was how well it handled off the pavement. I tested it on gravel, hard dirt and grass and the PX-10 powered through these surfaces with little reduction in speed. Probably due to the 10 inch, air-filled tyres combined with the powerful 350W motor!

In most states of Australia, eScooters need to have a maximum speed of 25km/h in order to be legally allowed in public spaces. The Px-10 is no exception and the motor has been governed by the manufacturer in order to comply with these regulations.

In one battery charge, I was able to travel for 1.5 hours for a distance of about 30 km at an average speed of 19.4 km/h. Given my hefty 95 kg frame, I judged this to fall within the manufacturer’s range claim of 45km – This is based on a 75 kg person travelling at average speed of 15km/h.

There are many underrated affordable electric scooters out there, especially in the US, that are just as worthy of praise as the mid-range and premium models. So, this 2023, we are looking to expand this list, especially with new releases, some of which are bound to debut at at  CES 2023 . Stay tuned.

Save more with one of the best cheap electric scooters. E-scooters already save you money on gas and parking, especially for your daily commutes to work and errand runs, but these budget options take it a step further with their low price of entry.

Before you hit that buy button, keep in mind that most models under the $500/£500 price bracket tend to come with some compromises. These budget e-scooters are likely to have a shorter range and a less powerful motor that might not be good for uphills. 

However, if your daily commutes are short or if you're only using them every now and then, the best budget e-scooter options are a great cost-effective option. And, they can be just as reliable as the best electric scooters on the market in terms of city commuting, as they're just as snappy in picking up speed and just as effective when braking. 

If you're looking for something with chunky tires, a powerful motor and full suspension capable of powering up hilly trails, you'll have to open your wallet a little further. However, if your commuting demands are of the basic and straightforward capacity or if you need an electric scooter for students to make sure you get to class on time, there are excellent budget electric scooters to consider first to save you money.

We've tested more than our share of electric scooters so we know which ones are worth your money and which ones to pass on. Below, we've gathered the best cheap electric scooters on the market right now.

1. Segway Ninebot ES1L

The Segway Ninebot ES1L is an excellent affordable option if you're looking for a cheap electric scooter that boasts a solid build. It only has a 12.4-mile range, which means you'd have to charge nightly if you're using it to commute to and from work. However, it does have that Segway stamp of quality, which means it's well-designed and robust – not to mention a 220-pound max load capacity. 

Its 250W motor can get you at 12.4mph top speed, which might not be super fast but still good enough for most short city commutes. The fact that it's lightweight, weighing at 24.9lbs, means you can easily fold it then load it up on trains and buses – as well as carry up to the office. Its 8-inch tires aren't best for rugged roads, but they should offer enough shock absorption – so long as you avoid massive potholes.

2. Gotrax APEX LE

The Gotrax APEX LE is an attractive electric scooter and one that suits both teens and adults, thanks in large part to its 220-pound maximum load capacity. This is no toy, either. It's a proper commuter electric scooter that will get you to and from work with its 15.5 mph top speed and 250W motor. The 15-mile range per full charge does mean that you'll have to charge every or every other night if you're commuting every day, but that's not a biggie especially since it only takes up to 5 hours to charge.

We're in the middle of testing this e-scooter at the moment, and we're already loving our rides. The 8.5-inch pneumatic tires aren't exactly the greatest at handling shock absorption, but that throttle is impressively snappy, getting you from 0 to 12mph in about three seconds! That's not too shabby for something that's in the budget range.

3. TurboAnt M10

Although we haven't fully reviewed the TurboAnt M10, we have had the pleasure of testing it, and it's a great introduction to the quality of electric scooters the company has on offer. This is among its budget offerings, and yet, it's incredibly well-built. Some cheap electric scooters might feel rickety out of the box, but this one feels robust and premium, which is a nice surprise.

Because it is on the budget end, it's a little light on special features. However, it's got a snappy performance and 10-inch pneumatic tires that ensure you're getting great shock absorption when going through the rougher parts of town, road-wise. What else will make you think this is a premium option? How about that 18-mile range and that 20mph top speed? Oh, and did we mention its fairly lightweight as well? This one is truly worth your money.

4. Gotrax XR Ultra

Gotrax's e-scooters have always been among the great-quality models in the budget and mid range, and the Gotrax XR Ultra is no exception. It's one of the pricier options  on this cheap electric scooters list, but it's still very affordable compared to the top-of-the-line models. It's impressive too, touting a 300W motor and a 16-mile range per full charge in its fairly lightweight body.

It can also handle a max load of 220 pounds at its top speed of 15.5 mph on flat roads – though uphills might be a little tricky. Meanwhile, although its 8.5-inch pneumatic tires may not be the best are shock absorption, but they've got great traction. Just be prepared to put in a little more effort during assembly. We've only just started testing this electric scooter, but it's already impressed us.

5. Hover-1 Alpha

Another cheap electric scooter from Hover-1, the Alpha is a little more expensive than the Eagle (hence its lower ranking), but will keep rolling for five more miles on a single charge, which might be enough to justify the cost.

It has 10in pneumatic tires for a smoother ride, plus electric disc brakes for safe stopping and a convenient folding design. It's not built with portability in mind though, and at 15.6kg it's the heaviest scooter in this roundup.

In addition to an LED headlight, there's also under-deck lighting, plus a Bluetooth speaker built in. If you're looking for a cheap electric scooter for an older teenager, little extras like those could tip the balance in the Alpha's favor.

What’s new this year?

The 2020 WideWheel Pro retains much of what made it such a successful scooter in the first place: the wide wheels, the powerful motors providing all-wheel drive, the full suspension, etc.

But it received some very nice upgrades that make it a more usable scooter for everyday commuting in addition to simply tearing up the neighborhood.

My original complaints about the first generation scooter over a year ago were centered around the display and the desire to see some structural improvements. As it turns out, the WideWheel Pro has made all of those upgrades and more!

The first and most visible upgrade is the new display. It replaces the simple LED interface with a data-packed LCD screen that is bright and visible, even in direct sunlight. You can use it to easily change gears (or more accurately: speed modes) as well as set your cruise control preference. To be honest, I’m not a cruise control fan and so I used the display to easily turn that feature off. It just weirds me out that I hand off control of the throttle to a machine. But I can see it being nice for long straightaways, so it’s a cool feature to have.

Next, the WideWheel Pro electric scooter got a new disc brake added to the front wheel, complimenting the existing rear wheel disc brake.

There was an issue with the original WideWheel’s single brake last year , but that was cleared up on the old model and the WideWheel Pro is coming in hot with upgraded front and rear braking right from the factory.

There are also new LED headlights that are SUPER bright. I don’t know why I still test LEDs by looking directly into them. You’d think I’d learn.

The battery has also been upgraded to a 720Wh pack, boosting the range of the WideWheel Pro compared to its predecessor. While high-speed riding will drop the range closer to 20 miles (32 km), riders should be getting upwards of 30 miles (48 km) of range in ECO mode. Mercane, the scooter’s manufacturer, actually rates the scooter for even more range, but the exclusive US distributor Fluidfreeride publishes the more real-world figure of 30-ish miles. Good for them!

And lastly, a number of structural upgrades were made to the stem, locking mechanism and fork to strengthen the scooter and make it even more ruggedized.

All in all these upgrades have improved what was already a great scooter, with a single exception: Weight. The 2020 WideWheel Pro is around 9 lb (4 kg) heavier than the original version. That’s actually kind of nice while riding because it feels more firmly planted, but it gets a bit heavy when carrying it around.

If you can look past the extra holiday weight that the scooter is still carrying, then the 2020 WideWheel is better in just about every way.

It’s faster. It’s more powerful. It goes farther. It climbs hills better. It is more visible at night. It’s structurally stronger. It’s just better.

But that also means you have to be careful with it because it’s a powerful scooter and it really wants to ride. With just a bit of throttle, it is ready to take off, so you better be holding on.

The dual brakes (and thus dual brake levers) are confidence-inspiring because they give you that familiar bicycle feel. You’ve got all the brakes you’ll need. And you’ll need them. Speeds of 26 mph (42 km/h) are no joke and you better be prepared. This is not an entry-level scooter. It’s a machine that flies.

It certainly feels stable at those speeds, but that doesn’t mean this is a beginner scooter. The suspension is forgiving, though it isn’t the longest travel suspension I’ve ever seen on a scooter. So you can’t go hitting potholes with reckless abandon like you can on some scooters.

Instead, the suspension on the WideWheel Pro is all about comfort. It smooths out surface imperfections, sidewalk cracks, train tracks, etc. But it’s not going to take you down mountain trails. It just doesn’t have the travel for that. Instead, I use it to hit things like smaller speed bumps without slowing down as much or hopping down from a curb without shattering my ankles like I would on a Lime scooter .

So while I might ding the weight a bit and be left wishing for a bit more suspension travel, I’m otherwise super happy with the WideWheel Pro. It’s a fast and long-range electric scooter that folds down into a tiny footprint and features a pile of upgrades that make it better than ever.
