Brighton vs Manchester United 2-1: Premier League – as it happened

All the football updates as Brighton score late to beat Manchester United 2-1 at the Amex Stadium in Brighton, England.

This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as Brighton beat Manchester United in the English Premier League on Saturday, August 24:

  • Brighton beat Manchester United 2-1 to remain top of the Premier League, after Joao Pedro scored a late winner in the fifth minute of added time at the Amex Stadium.
  • Brighton took the lead in the 32nd minute when Danny Welbeck stuck out a leg to convert a cross by Kaoru Mitoma.
  • Amad Diallo hauled United level at the hour mark when he was put through on goal. The 22-year-old cut inside his marker before shooting, with the ball being deflected past keeper Jason Steele and into the net.
  • Alejandro Garnacho thought he’d given United the lead soon after, but the ball clipped Joshua Zirkzee’s knee on its way in, and the forward was ruled offside after a VAR review.
  • With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Brighton’s pressure paid off when Simon Adingra found space in the box and chipped the ball to an unmarked Pedro, who headed home to give Brighton two wins out of two this season.

Goodbye for now!

It was a fantastic start to week two of the new Premier League season, with Brighton leaving it late to maintain their 100 percent record against Manchester United.

It took a while for the game at the Amex to fire into life. But when it did, it was a real cracker.

Brighton are top of the table as we head into five more Premier League games on this busy Saturday afternoon.

Later, there’s a mouthwatering fixture at Villa Park as Aston Villa face Arsenal.

You can follow all of the updates for that one here.

For now, from me, Adam Hancock, goodbye!

‘We move on, very positive’

Andre Onana has been put forward to dissect that Manchester United defeat in a TV interview:

“It’s difficult, but we stay positive, we have big players, we are a big club and we have a lot of big ambition this season. We move on, very positive.”

The United keeper is hoping that his teammates can use this defeat as a way of learning ahead of their next league game against Liverpool.

“Through the tough times, the only thing to get through is to be together. We will look back, talk with each other and look a the videos of this game,” Onana said.

“[We want] to win everything and every game. Otherwise, what are we here for? When you wear this shirt, it is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

United brought back down to earth

After winning the FA Cup and taking all three points against Fulham, there was a bit of optimism about Manchester United heading into this fixture.

But much like the weather in Brighton, the dark clouds have returned for Erik ten Hag.

It’s another defeat for them in the Premier League after such a disappointing campaign last season.

Pedro slays United

We’ve just heard from the match winner – Joao Pedro.

“I’m very happy for the win. I think this goal at the end shows how much we want to win the game. It’s the first game at home against a big team,” he said.

“I cannot feel better than today. The team did well, but now we need to rest as we have another big game next weekend.”

Pedro also spoke fondly of Brighton’s new manager, Fabian Hurzeler.

“He is a very good person, he always tries to push us up to believe in ourselves and to keep going.

“The gaffer said to us, ‘We need to believe in ourselves’. We know they are United, a big club, but everyone wanted to show our power. This is what motivates us to fight against a big team”.

Joao Pedro holds out his arms and shots in celebration

Brighton stay top

Fabian Hurzeler must be wondering what all the fuss is about when it comes to the Premier League.

He’s walked in and got Brighton top of the league.

It’s (of course) early days yet, but there’s plenty to be optimistic about at the Amex.

Brighton have six points from six

The Amex is bouncing as the now-universal celebration song Freed from Desire rings out.

There’s a bit of a heated conversation between Ten Hag and Zirkzee – potentially about that late disallowed United goal.

Brighton have won it at the death!

A grandstand finish at the Amex as Pedro heads home a late, late winner.

Full time: Brighton 2-1 Manchester United

Credit to Fabian Hurzeler, his late subs have made a real difference.

What a start for the manager (you’ll likely know he is just 31 by now).

90+7 mins: Brighton 2-1 Manchester United

GOAL! Pedro scores late on!

The Amex erupts!

Brighton keep it alive after their corner is headed away. The ball is fed to Adingra on the left side of the penalty area.

He swings the ball towards the back post, finding Pedro, who is unmarked and able to head it home.

90+4 mins: Brighton 2-1 Manchester United

Brighton win a corner

The three Brighton changes have injected some life into the home team.

The Seagulls have a corner.

Changes for both teams

On:  Yasin Ayari, Simon Adingra, Georginio Rutter Off:  Kaoru Mitoma, Billy Gilmour, Yankuba Minteh

On:  Antony Off: Amad Diallo

90+3 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Seven minutes added on

There’s a whole host of substitutes – details to come – and then seven minutes of added time is shown on the board.

In among all of that, Casemiro has a shot which is well-held by Steele.

90 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Van Hecke booked

Brighton have three subs lined up and ready to go.

Before then there’s a little flare up between van Hecke and Martinez after the former fouled the latter.

88 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Dunk heads the ball to safety

A late United corner is cleared away by Dunk.

Both sides are still pushing forward when they can, there’s no settling for a draw just yet.

87 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Game in the balance

Just over five minutes to go at the Amex. Both sides could still find a later winner in this one.

84 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho runs with the ball while shadowed by Minteh

Brighton win successive corners

Onana flies in on Minteh with a sliding challenge to put the ball behind for a corner.

Minteh gets up to take the corner and his cross into the box is deflected behind for another corner.

This time Gilmour takes the set piece from the left, but Onana does well to punch the ball away.

83 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Julio Enciso is on for Brighton replacing Danny Welbeck.

United make another two changes:

Off:  Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire On:  Scott McTominay, Matthijs de Ligt

80 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Gilmour hits a free kick

Brighton win a free kick on the edge of the United box.

Gilmour and Minteh stand over it and the Scotsman steps up to take it. He drills the ball into the wall, much to the frustration of the crowd.

Moments later, Mainoo goes into the book for a foul on Baleba.

77 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Billy Gilmour hits the ball into the wall

Brighton make their first change

It’s the end of the road for James Milner today. He comes off for Carlos Baleba.

74 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Goal disallowed!

VAR has chalked it off!

The reason: The last touch before the ball crossed the line came off Zirkzee’s knee.

The Dutch forward was actually in an offside position so the goal is rightly ruled out. It’s unfortunate for United, Zirkzee was only trying to slide in to get onto the end of Fernandes’s initial cross.

73 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

GOAL! Garnacho gives United the lead!

The sub has a goal!

Diallo is in the thick of it again, breaking down the right. He plays Fernandes in, with the United skipper whipping a low cross across the face of goal.

Garnacho scores into an empty net at the back post.

70 mins: Brighton 1-2 Manchester United

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho celebrates at the corner flag by kneeling and pointing

Garnacho comes on

Erik ten Hag makes a second change as Rashford makes way for Alejandro Garnacho.

65 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Diallo’s goal stands

There’s a VAR check after that goal, but Diallo was played onside by van Hecke and the goal stands.

It was a brilliant run from the United youngster, beating one man in the box before smashing his effort home.

That goal has officially been given to Diallo despite the deflection.

63 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

GOAL! United are level!

It looks like an own goal!

Diallo breaks down the right at lightning speed. He cuts inside and smashes a shot which takes a big deflection past Steele.

60 mins: Brighton 1-1 Manchester United

Amad Diallo celebrates scoring their first goal with Noussair Mazraoui

Welbeck hits the bar!

Milner wins a free kick on the left after having his shirt pulled. The ball is almost on the byline and not far from the edge of the penalty area.

Minteh delivers an excellent ball into the box, finding the head of Welbeck. The former United man is so close to scoring a second, with his header crashing against the bar.

59 mins: Brighton 1-0 Manchester United

Danny Welbeck heads at goal

Is Aston Villa vs Arsenal on TV? Time, channel and how to watch Premier League match online

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal travel to Birmingham to play Aston Villa on Saturday evening, looking to take an important three points in a difficult early Premier League fixture.

The Gunners kicked off the season by easing to a 2-0 home win over Wolves , with Bukayo Saka starring in attack and the defence further solidifying its already lofty reputation.

And though Arteta’s side are widely tipped to be in title contention this season, this match is perhaps one that they’ll be most wary of – Villa beat Arsenal home and away last season as the Gunners missed out on the title by just two points.

FOLLOW LIVE: Aston Villa vs Arsenal team news and build-up to late kick off in Premier League

Unai Emery’s side started the season with a hard-fought away win against West Ham , and the Villans are a known quantity by now – they have the tools to hurt any side, and have hurt Arsenal in the past.

With a return to the Champions League on the horizon and a win to kick off the season, Villa fans are in a buoyant mood, so a confident Arsenal performance would certainly solidify the club’s title credentials for 2024/25.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game.

When is Aston Villa vs Arsenal?

Aston Villa vs Arsenal kicks off at 5.30pm BST on Saturday 24 August at Villa Park in Birmingham.

How can I watch it?

Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the match live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League, with coverage starting at 5pm. Subscribers will also be able to watch on the Sky Go app and website.

Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara remain as long-term absentees for Villa, with Robin Olsen also a major doubt.

Jhon Duran will likely have to settle for a place on the bench despite his winner against West Ham, though Jacob Ramsey and Ian Maatsen will hope that their cameos have shown Unai Emery that they are deserving of a place in the starting line-up.

For Arsenal, Declan Rice limped off in the last minutes of the win over Wolves, though reports suggesting that the midfielder is fine – Arteta suggested it was cramp – and will be in line to start. Tomiyasu, Vieira and Tierney remain injured while Eddie Nketiah will likely sit out amid reports of a move to Nottingham Forest.

Bukayo Saka was also seen limping at times during the match, and was eventually replaced by Leandro Trossard after scoring, but he should be fine to start against Villa.

Jurrien Timber replaced Zinchenko at the weekend, and was lively in his cameo, and may have done enough to warrant a place in the starting eleven. Thomas Partey will be fighting Jorginho for a starting berth, with Rice and Odegaard guaranteed to start in midfield.

The front three will likely stay the same as it was against Wolves, with neither Jesus or Trossard doing enough during their cameos to suggest they should start.

Official lineups

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Pau, Digne; Onana, Tielemans; McGinn, Bailey, Rogers; Watkins

Arsenal XI : Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber; Rice, Partey, Odegaard; Martinelli, Saka, Havertz

Villa will fancy themselves to get a result at home, especially considering the result the last time these two teams met, but the home side looked shakier than usual against West Ham and Arsenal will punish them if that is the case this weekend. Moreover, Arsenal’s defensive solidity looks to have continued from last season, so the Gunners should have enough to grab an important way win. Aston Villa 1-2 Arsenal.

Protesters gather for Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan's Rural Press Club address

Hundreds of people turned out on Friday to protest a range of issues in Bendigo as Premier Jacinta Allan prepared to address the Rural Press Club of Victoria in her home city.

In a speech covering a range of topics including healthcare and infrastructure, Ms Allan said her government is focused on providing services where regional communities need them.

What's next?

When asked about the issue of transmission lines highlighted by protesters, Ms Allan said the state needed the infrastructure to meet future energy needs.

Simmering tensions from regional communities over major Victorian infrastructure projects have come to a head in Bendigo, with hundreds of protesters gathering to target Premier Jacinta Allan in her home city.

Ms Allan addressed members of the press and other attendees at a lunch being held by the Rural Press Club of Victoria within her Bendigo East electorate.

Gathering in the car park of the venue ahead of the lunch, the protesters displayed a range of banners regarding issues ranging from energy, transmission lines and mining projects, as well as the treatment of farmers.

"Jacinta Allan's in there and if she can hear us ... no one here is backing down," protest organiser Ben Duxton said.

Ms Allan addressed the press club on issues important to regional and rural Victorians, but farmers attending the protest said they were frustrated with the government and that "short-term" politicians were making short-term decisions.

"What makes these people think they have the right to inflict this level of financial stress?" asked Sherrie Drift, who was protesting the Western Renewables Link (WRL) project.

The WRL is a contentious 190-kilometre overhead transmission line project that would connect Bulgana in the west of the state to Sydenham on the edge of Melbourne.

The project is due to begin construction in 2025.

Another transmission project that has protesters concerned is the Victoria to NSW Interconnector West (VNI WEST) that would connect energy projects in New South Wales to the WRL in Victoria.

Maths teacher Sharon McEvoy delivered a speech at the event and said she was protesting over the installation of lithium batteries and solar farms near her property around the Kiewa Valley in North-East Victoria.

"It's about the government just not listening to the agricultural sector," she told the Victorian Country Hour .

"It's soul destroying.

"It's about taking away our rights, like they took away our right to go through VCAT."

Premier addresses concerns

In a speech that covered a range of topics including the state of rural journalism, healthcare, remote work, and infrastructure, Ms Allan said her government was focused on providing services where regional communities needed them.

"We're not going to force hospitals to amalgamate," she said.

"I know how much local health services matter.

"A strong health service is one of the building blocks of a strong regional community."

"I do respectfully disagree with the issue ... around the delivery of transmission networks across the state," Ms Allan said.

"Rural and regional communities, primary producers and farmers are the most exposed to the challenges of climate change ... and part of the answer to that is delivering more renewable energy.

"Delivering more renewable energy means that we provide better energy security."

Ms Allan also said delivering these renewable energy projects would deliver more jobs, but would require upgrades to existing transmission infrastructure.

"We must deliver new transmission networks to get the renewable energy from where it's being generated, particularly here in the north and the west of the state, to the rest of the state," she said.

Erik ten hag’s men were stunned by the seagulls in a thrilling lunchtime contest in the premier league, article bookmarked.

Manchester United's Casemiro looks dejected after the match

Joao Pedro hit Manchester United with a stoppage time winner for Brighton in a dramatic finale in the Premier League.

Amad Diallo had dragged the Red Devils level and Erik ten Hag’s side thought they had gone ahead when Alejandro Garnacho converted, only for VAR to rule out the strike after Joshua Zirkzee, who was in an offside position, touched the ball just inches from the goalline.

Former Red Devils striker Danny Welbeck had earlier broke the deadlock at the Amex Stadium, as the Seagulls continued their early season form . Welbeck capped a lovely move in the first half, involving Kaoru Mitoma, when he escaped Harry Maguire to poke home into the empty net from close range.

Welbeck then struck the woodwork with a header from close range, before United hit back through Diallo’s strike, which was deflected past Jason Steele.

But the Seagulls seized all three points in the 95th minute through Pedro to keep Fabian Hurzeler’s side top of the league. Follow all the reaction from today’s Premier League encounter below:

Erik ten Hag calls for ‘patience’ as Manchester United target more summer signings

Brighton 1-1 Man Utd

90 mins: Seven minutes of added time to play!

88 mins: Just a couple of minutes of the 90 to play and the match is wide open. Both teams are going for the win but there needs to be more quality in the final third if one of them is to nick the three points.

85 mins: A cross from Garnacho is deflected behind for a corner. It’s right in front of the travelling fans as Amad jogs over to take this one.

The ball is whipped into the middle but Dunk is there for Brighton to nod it away.

82 mins: Brighton win a corner after United mess up trying to play out from the back. Lewis Dunk flicks the ball on at the near post before the visitors scramble it behind for another corner.

Gilmour delivers the second set piece but Onana is there to punch it away.

79 mins: More changes from Erik ten Hag with Matthijs de Ligt and Scott McTominay brought onto the pitch. They replace Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.

Danny Welbeck is taken off for Brighton as Julio Enciso comes on. These last 10 minutes or so should be exciting now.

76 mins: Amad Diallo gives away a free kick in a dangerous area and Billy Gilmour is lining it up. The midfielder strikes it into the wall which does its job.

Joao Pedro recycles the ball into the box but it’s deflected into the hands of Andre Onana.

73 mins: That disallowed goal for Man Utd was one of the most unfortunate things I’ve seen recently. It was a fine move from the visitors with Garnacho’s shot heading in until it struck Zirkzee in the offside position.

The Man Utd fans won’t be happy about that.

James Milner has gone off for Brighton with Carlos Baleba brought on.

NO GOAL! Brighton 1-1 Man Utd

70 mins: GOAL?!

This is such bad luck for Man Utd. They break on the counter and find Bruno Fernandes who gives it to Amad Diallo. Amad drives up the pitch before slipping it back to Fernandes.

He fizzes a pass across the goal, Joshua Zirkzee misses it but Alejandro Garnacho is there. He sends the ball towards goal but it hits Zirkzee and deflects into the goal.

VAR looks at it and sees that Zirkzee was offside so the goal is ruled off.

69 mins: Garnacho and Dalot combine on the left side before Garnacho’s pull back comes into a dangerous area. He can’t find a teammate though and Brighton manage to scramble the ball away.

The momentum is, slowly, swinging back to the visitors after that equaliser.

66 mins: Erik ten Hag whips off Marcus Rashford and introduces Alejandro Garnacho. Man Utd have two young and quick attackers on both wings now which could be dangerous for Brighton.

The United fans are singing Garnacho’s name already.

Putin meets Chinese premier Li Qiang in Moscow, says 'large-scale plans' for projects

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese premier Li Qiang Wednesday, hailing growing trade relations as Moscow becomes increasingly dependent on Beijing for political and economic support.

“Our trade relations are developing, developing successfully … The attention that the governments of the two countries on both sides are paying to trade and economic ties is yielding results,” Putin said at the meeting in the Kremlin.

He also said that Russia and China have developed “large-scale plans” for economic and other projects.

“Chinese-Russian relations are at an unprecedentedly high level,” said Li, who earlier had met with his Russian counterpart, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

The meeting took place as Russia struggled to push back an incursion by Ukrainian forces into the Kursk region that began more than two weeks ago. Moscow saw overnight drone attacks that officials said were one of the largest wave of drones on the Russian capital since the start of the Ukraine conflict.

Russian news reports did not indicate whether Putin and Li discussed Ukraine.

China has tried to position itself as neutral in the Ukraine conflict, but it shares with Russia high animosity toward the West.

After Western countries imposed heavy sanctions on Russian oil in response to Russia sending troops into Ukraine in February 2022, China strongly stepped up its purchase of Russian oil, increasing its influence in Russia. Putin underlined the importance of China by meeting in Beijing with Chinese leader Xi Jinping soon after being inaugurated for a fifth term in the Kremlin.

A U.S. intelligence assessment released this year indicates that China has significantly increased sales to Russia of machine tools, microelectronics and other technology Moscow uses to produce missiles, tanks, aircraft and other weaponry.

Hassan Sulaiman's team will travel to north London to face Arsenal in our second Under-18s Premier League match on Saturday morning, with the game kicking off at 11am.

Chelsea Under-18s are set to play our first away match of the season against Arsenal, who have made a strong start to their 2024/25 campaign. The Gunners secured three points in their opening Premier League 2 fixture with a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

The young Blues are looking to bounce back from our previous result, when we suffered a 5-2 defeat against Brighton, despite Chizaram Ezenwata’s brace.

'We have worked incredibly hard this week,' started Under-18s head coach Hassan Sulaiman . 'We have focused on one-on-one defending and defending as a unit.

'It’s important that we get the basics right. I have seen some really good positives with our build-up play, the structure and the style with which we want to approach the game. There are lots of positives to take away from this week.

'The squad has been ruthless in the final third throughout training, scoring a number of goals in our patterns. It’s been great to see.'

Despite the tough start to the season, Sulaiman stressed the importance of using early set-backs as learning opportunities. He recognises that we're still at the beginning of the campaign and that there is plenty of room for growth, both in the players’ performances on the pitch and in their mentality off of it.

'I am feeling optimistic. Last week was a tough test and since then we have had opportunities to reflect as a team and as individuals. We have understood that we were a little naive and immature in some aspects of our performance last week.

'It’s an opportunity for the boys to grow and learn. It’s a chance to put right what we did wrong last week. I have spoken about mentality before, but that is crucial when making the jump. Moving up the league brings a lot of pressure with it.'

Understanding the importance of learning from past lessons, Sulaiman notes that his Under-18s squad must continue to develop and progress throughout their Academy journey. He highlights that key characteristics for Academy players include how well they bounce back from set-backs and reflect on their experiences.

'It is development football and we are a younger squad. The boys have to learn quickly. With all the hard work we’ve put in, going into this week, we are looking forward to it.

'With a young squad moving up age groups, there is a difference in what goes on both on and off the pitch.

'There are three points each week that we will be fighting for, and there’s the reputation of the club and the success from last season. Naturally, the squad will feel slightly on edge.

'However, the intensity and pace of Under-18s football are new to most of the players, so there is a lack of experience. But we’re only in the second week and that experience will grow throughout the season as we continue playing fixtures week in, week out.

'It’s a great opportunity for the boys to continue to learn and grow. We want them to learn and reflect quickly because it’s going to be a tough season.

'Even though we're a young team, we have a lot of talent. I’m confident that the players will rise to the occasion. We just need to embrace the challenges ahead.'

Jarell Quansah dropped? Liverpool starting line up vs Brentford predicted

George James

Home » Jarell Quansah dropped? Liverpool starting line up vs Brentford predicted

Liverpool continue their Premier League campaign this weekend as Brentford visit Anfield, but who should make it into the Reds’ starting XI?

New Liverpool boss Arne Slot began his first season as Liverpool manager on a high with a solid 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town last weekend and the Dutchman will be looking to follow up that good start with another three points.

Although Liverpool are yet to make a signing, it looks like Slot will have his full squad available to him as no injuries have been reported ahead of Sunday’s 4:30pm kick-off.

Read more: Liverpool agree SHOCKING fee for highly-rated academy prospect

The question is, who will make Liverpool’s starting XI to take on Brentford in their first home game of the 2024/25 season?

Here’s what we think…

Goalkeeper – Alisson

premier travel in

RECORD DATE NOT STATED Seleccion Mexicana 2024 Mexico vs Brazil Alisson Becker of Brazil during the game International Friendly, Länderspiel, Nationalmannschaft between Mexican national team, Nationalteam Mexico and Brazil at Kyle Field Stadium, on June 08, 2024, College Station, Texas, United States. Alisson didn’t put a foot wrong in Liverpool’s opening game and, as long as he’s fit, he’s probably going to start most games in between the sticks for the Reds this year.

The Brazilian will be looking to claim his second clean sheet of the season and will be hoping to stake a genuine claim for the Premier League’s golden glove after an injury hampered 2023/24 season.

Right-back – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold England Euro 2024

Although Trent was replaced by Connor Bradley in the 77 th minute of Liverpool's first league game, the vice-captain is set to start this game for Liverpool.

Despite a limited pre-season after a mixed Euros with England, the 25-year-old looked incredibly sharp against Ipswich and played a beautiful pass in the build up to Diogo Jota’s opener.

Much like Alisson, if he is fit there is no reason for Liverpool's no.66 not to start.

Centre-back – Ibrahima Konaté

Ibrahima Konate - Pro Shots

Ibrahima Konate - Pro Shots

Jarell Quansah was picked ahead of Konaté for the opener but the 21-year-old was hooked at half time and criticised by Slot post-match for not winning enough of his duels.

Konaté came out for the second half and Liverpool finally started firing in front of goal.

Although the Frenchman wasn’t directly involved in either of the Reds’ goals he looked ready for the season once he was on the pitch and Slot will be looking to recreate the dominance Liverpool displayed in the second half at Portman Road again this weekend at Anfield.

Centre-back – Virgil Van Dijk

The Liverpool captain will be one of the first names on the team sheet every week this season. He started his campaign well with a solid display against Ipswich and will be looking to keep the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa quiet this weekend.

After a limited pre-season the 33-year-old will be looking to get another 90 minutes in the tank and lead Liverpool to another victory.

Left-back – Andy Robertson

Although Robertson’s fitness had been questioned in the build up to Liverpool’s opener, he was able to manage almost 80 minutes and looks nailed on to start again this weekend.

Another example of a Liverpool player who was only available for part of Liverpool’s pre-season, Robertson will also be looking to gain some match sharpness and this will be a great chance to get some more minutes ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford at the start of September, a game which Robbo will definitely not want to miss.

Centre midfield – Alexis Mac Allister

After an impressive debut season with the Reds last campaign, Mac Allister will be looking to assert himself as one of the best midfielders in the league this season.

He was solid against Ipswich and, despite all the talk around Liverpool’s midfield options this summer, looks sure to be a key figure in Slot’s team.

Mac Allister scored a wonderful goal against Brentford in the reverse fixture last year and he may well be looking to open his account for this season on Sunday.

Centre midfield – Ryan Gravenberch

Liverpool have spent the whole summer searching for a new holding midfielder to boost Slot’s team but their solution for the opening match was Ryan Gravenberch.

Although his performance garnered mixed reviews it's hard to argue that anyone else currently at Liverpool could do a better job in the no.6 role at the moment and an extended run of games in the position could be exactly what Gravenberch needs to settle into the starting XI permanently.

Attacking midfield - Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai Jarell Quansah

Dominik Szoboszlai Jarell Quansah

Another player who impressed in his debut campaign for Liverpool, Szoboszlai is coming off the back of a great pre-season with Liverpool after a disappointing run with his nation, Hungary, at the Euros.

Szoboszlai looked good against Ipswich and will be looking to impress again in order to nail down a place in the starting XI ahead of the likes of Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones.

Right forward – Mohamed Salah

The man of the match in Liverpool’s opener, Salah looked incredibly sharp and was able to both score and provide an assist, extending his record-breaking run of opening day goals.

Salah looked like the main threat for Liverpool and Reds fans should expect this to continue heading into this weekend’s fixture.

Left forward – Luis Diaz

There has been a great deal of speculation around Liverpool’s left-wing position, with multiple transfers rumoured and an exit for Diaz looking likely at times.

However, Diaz started on the left in Liverpool’s opener and looks to be a serious part of Slot’s plans for the season.

His toughest competition for the place will be Cody Gakpo but the Dutchman played through the middle when he came on against Ipswich and Diaz looks set to start once again.

Striker – Diogo Jota

Jota is in fine form for Liverpool right now. An incredible finish in the pre-season friendly against Seville was followed up by the opener in Liverpool’s last match against Ipswich.

Jota looks ready to make the striker position his own at Liverpool this year and anyone else, whether it's Cody Gakpo or Darwin Núñez, will have a challenge ahead of them if they want to displace him.

Stop searching and start saving knowing you’ll always get our best value right here. Enjoy the warm welcome and quality service you’d expect at every one of our 800+ hotels right across the UK .  Our room prices are set depending on the level of demand for hotels and stay dates. The higher the demand for a room, the higher the price is likely to be. In general, our lowest-priced rooms are available when booked well in advance and would not typically be available to book close to your stay date. This is why we always suggest that you book early to avoid disappointment. In some instances, including where demand decreases, our room prices may fall too. Additionally, we may occasionally offer promotions and discounts, which may result in a lower room price being offered.
