Saïda Lamrani Karim Vice-President, Groupe Safari Interview

Morocco | Industry

OBG talks to Saïda Lamrani Karim, Vice-President, Groupe Safari

Interview: saïda lamrani karim.

What impact has the economic crisis in Europe had on the development of Morocco’s industry?

SAIDA LAMRANI KARIM: First of all, Morocco has had a privileged partnership with the EU for some time, drawing benefit from its “advanced status” agreement. To some extent, the crisis in Europe does in fact present an opportunity for Morocco. Already we are seeing that investors are coming to Morocco and looking for new markets or new locations for production facilities.

We have also made a great effort to become a shipping hub for countries in sub-Sahara Africa and the Maghreb that wish to export to Europe. This is an old strategy, but one that could be fully developed now that Europe is experiencing an economic slump. In the long term, this strategy could certainly continue, if only because Morocco offers certain advantages. It is too early to say whether the European crisis has led to accelerating industrial development in Morocco.

How do free trade agreements (FTAs) affect the export sector, given that imports exceed exports?

LAMRANI KARIM: It is clear that among certain sub-sectors, companies are struggling to respond to mass imports from some of our more developed FTA partners, such as Turkey. It is easy to say that we are getting inundated by imports, but we also have the desire and the duty to develop our exports. This is the best way to re-establish a reasonable trade balance.

Meanwhile, Morocco does have some disadvantages. For instance, having no energy resources of our own means that production costs are relatively high. We cannot renege on existing agreements, but we also can’t accept that goods are being dumped on our markets. We must develop market access criteria so that industry can be protected during the economic crisis.

We need to take well-planned measures to stop anti-competitive actions. This involves preventing products from being imported whose prices do not even cover the cost of the raw materials. In the end, World Trade Organisation rules have to be respected and we need to use the legal means that are at our disposal. Morocco has, in this regard, been among the countries that have been most respectful of international trade rules.

How can the textiles sector maintain its competitiveness in the face of global competition?

LAMRANI KARIM: In terms of competition, the situation is even more worrisome for textiles compared to other industrial sectors. There is a lot of pressure from countries that are far more competitive. This is not only the case with nations with which we have signed FTAs, but also with countries such as Pakistan and China.

In the face of this competition, we need to continue to produce textiles from the raw materials through to the finished products. Furthermore, Morocco needs to diversify its product range. The textile sector is one that is very labour-intensive and which also has to deal with artificially low prices due to imports and competition from the informal sector.

To what extent does the informal sector interfere with the growth of the industrial sector?

LAMRANI KARIM: Informality is a big issue in terms of industrial development. In rural areas, this is even more complicated because business is so fragmented there.

Pushing back informality begins with ensuring that all employees and sales are being registered.

It is an ongoing process of education that has to be pursued; however, it is also important that formalisation be made more attractive. This means, for instance, that fiscal charges do not put a large burden on companies and that administrative procedures do not unreasonably slow down business. Finally, the tax burden needs to be shared more equitably.

The textiles sector, for example, is now better organised than before, which has helped to push back the informal sector. It is in our interest to choose the right means to combat the informal market, and not just via repression and sanctions. These approaches instil fear and may push businesses further towards informality.

Safari Group and Knauf Group announce an investment in a new plasterboard manufacturing plant via CMPE

groupe safari morocco

Safari Group and Knauf Group recently agreed on an investment in their Moroccan joint venture CMPE (Compagnie Marocaine de Plâtre et d’Enduit) to build a new state-of-the-art plasterboard production facility in Sidi-Tiji, province of Safi. For more than 50 years, CMPE has been Morocco’s leading producer and exporter of gypsum plaster and the company is today the largest producer in Africa. Knauf and Safari are partners in CMPE for 22 years.

“Our investment decision in a new plasterboard plant shows our trust in the growth of the Moroccan market and will strengthen the leading position of CMPE. Also, this investment aligns with the Moroccan government’s guidance to reduce importations and develop a competitive local industry of excellence. With our new production, we will supply the Moroccan market and export to Sub-Saharan markets”, stated Saïda Lamrani Karim, CEO of Group SAFARI and Jörg Kampmeyer, General Partner of the Knauf Group.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Investment, Convergence and Evaluation of Public Policies, and CMPE for this project.

The production facility, which will be located in the industrial park of Sidi-Tiji in the Safi region, is expected to create around 100 direct jobs and more than 500 indirect jobs. It will be designed and constructed by Knauf Engineering GmbH, and leading German companies will supply the major part of the equipment. The advanced technology chosen for this project will significantly reduce energy and water consumption compared to any existing « conventional » plasterboard plant and will make the Sidi-Tiji plant a flagship project in terms of efficiency and sustainability.

In connection with this new plant, CMPE will open new training centers in Morocco with the aim to teach applicators, and raise awareness among architects and building engineers on design and application of modern drywall systems.

With the investment in a modern line of production as well as training centers, both Knauf and the Safari Group aim to contribute to the further development of productivity, safety and sustainability in the Moroccan building industry.

Ouarzazate is strategically located near the Draa Valley and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Essential Tips for Morocco Safaris

Embarking on a safari in Morocco requires some forethought and preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable time. Here are some essential tips for your Morocco safari:

Plan According to the Season

Morocco experiences diverse climates. The desert can be scorching in summer, while the mountains can be chilly in the winter, especially January. Plan your safari based on the season and region to optimize your experience.

I was stunned at just how cold Morocco was. Last time I was there is was November and even in that early part of winter some places were very cold. Of course the altitude factors in once you get into the mountains but even on the coast it can get very brisk.

Pack Appropriate Clothing

Bring layers for varying temperatures. Comfortable, breathable clothing is crucial, especially for desert excursions. Do not forget a hat, sunglasses, and SPF sunscreen for protection against sunburns.

Hydrate

Morocco's warm climate can be dehydrating, particularly in the desert. Carry a reusable water bottle and stay well-hydrated to avoid fatigue and low blood pressure.

Respect Local Customs

Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country, and while Moroccans are generally friendly people, you must respect their unique traditions and customs to avoid offending anyone. Dress modestly by covering your shoulders and legs, especially in rural villages.

Always take prior permission before clicking pictures of people. Avoid public displays of affection and eating and drinking in front of others during the holy month of Ramadan.

Pack Comfortable Footwear

Whether trekking in the mountains or navigating the desert dunes, comfortable and sturdy footwear is essential during a safari tour. Break in your shoes before the safari to prevent discomfort.

Choose a Reputable Safari Operator

Research and select a reputable safari operator. Read reviews, check for certifications, and ensure they prioritize responsible tourism practices.

By keeping these essential tips in mind, you will be better equipped to enjoy a memorable and culturally enriching safari experience in Morocco.

Check What is Supplied and What Is Not

Once you have nailed down which operator you would like to use, be sure to check what items are included in your safari. For example, are sleeping bags included or do you need to bring your own. If they are, what rating are they? You might want to consider taking your own just in case.

The first time I went to Morocco I had a sleeping bag I took with me, but it was nowhere near warm enough. Those were the days I didn't really know that sleeping bags had ratings and warmth values.

Once we started out to the desert I discovered very quickly that my bag wasn't warm enough and I was sleeping in my puffer and 2 layers of clothes. I couldn't get another sleeping bag anywhere but I did manage to buy a blanket which made me toasty warm.

It was so heavy, but worked like a charm. I just gave it away when I moved on to Mauritania.

Planning your Morocco Safari: What to Know

When planning your Morocco safari, consider these essential factors for a pleasant time:

Destinations

Do your research before picking your Safari destinations. Each location provides a slightly different experience. So you need to know what you are interested in before booking the safari to get the perfect experience and avoid disappointments.

Safari Options

Explore the diverse safari experiences available in Morocco, including camel treks, desert camps, and 4×4 tours. Popular choices include the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, Merzouga, and surrounding areas.

Also check if it is a camping safari or not. Most are especially if you want to go more remote, however some offer more permanent camps so it does pay to check.

Know You Will Be With A Group

Unless you have a large friend group or are a family group, you will be travelling with other people you've never met. This can be so much fun, but of course there is usually at least one person you wouldn't choose to socialise with at home. Be prepared to smile, nod and just keep quiet. Trust me this is heaps easier for a week or so than to get into it with another guest.

You all have paid and have the right to be there so be prepared that there may be someone you don't care for, but there is also probably other like minded people you will make friends with and be friends with forever.

Some of our group on a 9 month overland trip through Africa. A fantastic bunch of people.

Tour Operators

The right tour operator can make or break your entire trip.

Private bespoke tours can tailor the itinerary to your preferences, but there are lots of different tour operators who offer great packages from the get-go that you can choose from. So try those before you go for a custom tour.

Unique Experiences of Morocco Safaris

Besides admiring the jaw-dropping dunes, there are many different activities you can try out throughout safaris in Morocco. These include but are not limited to camel trekking and picnics in the Sahara, 4×4 desert excursions, stargazing without any light pollution, sandboarding, hot air balloon rides, and trekking in the High Atlas.

Whether you want a thrilling adventure or a relaxing retreat, Morocco caters to all preferences.

The Best Time to Go for Morocco Safaris

The spring season is one of the best times for Morocco safaris. The weather is mild without being too cold or sweltering hot, and landscapes come to life with blooming wildflowers. It is an ideal time to explore the Atlas Mountains, enjoy desert excursions, and visit cultural destinations.

Temperatures in summer months from June to August can exceed 40°C, making the heat unbearable in the desert region.

Like spring, fall has pleasant temperatures, making it another suitable time for safaris. You can trek in the Atlas Mountains, experience the desert charm, and explore the cities. You do not really have to bundle up too much, and the heat is not blazing either.

However, this is also the peak tourist season. But if the crowds do not bother you, this is a great time to visit Morocco.

Winter is the coldest time in Morocco, with temperatures varying by region. The coastal areas stay mild, while the Atlas Mountains can be chilly and snowy, providing the ideal opportunity for skiing or snowboarding for adrenaline-junkies.

The desert is pleasant enough during the day for activities but has colder nights, often requiring layers of clothing to keep yourself warm and comfortable.

The Cost of Morocco Safaris

The cost of Morocco safaris depends on the activities you book and the duration of your trip. Some trips are just a few hours, while others are overnight or go on for up to a week. However, the average cost ranges anywhere between $40- $200.

Here are a few options you can check out to get started:

1 Night Camel Trekking Tour in Merzouga Desert Camp

Price: From $48 USD

The 1 Night Camel Trekking Tour in the Merzouga is one of the cheapest safaris in Morocco you can book, yet providing great value for money. You get an overnight trip in the Merzouga Desert with a complete Berber camp setup, and a bumpy camel ride.

Watch the sun go down while relaxing with a cup of tea and have dinner as night falls. Admire the glorious starlit night sky before calling it a day and returning to your camp.

2-Days Zagora Trip from Marrakech to Atlas and Camel Trek and Desert Camp

Price: From $92 USD

If you do not want to keep things limited to the desert, you can make your trip more eventful by booking a two day Zagora trip that starts at Marrakech and goes through Atlas, Draa Valley, and Zagora.

The tour starts from the busy city of Marrakech before heading to the villages near the Atlas Mountains and taking a camel ride in Zagora.

On the way back to Marrakech, you can explore some of Morocco's key highlights, including the charming ancient kasbahs in Ouarzazate and the small village of Ait Benhaddou, known for its unique Berber architecture.

3 Day Marrakech to Merzouga Group Tour With Sahara Holiday Tours

Priced from $234 USD (220 Euro)

This tour crossed the Atlas Mountains on a fantastic 3 day adventure. Your three-day desert journey from Marrakech to Merzouga begins bright and early after breakfast, when your welcoming guide from Sahara Holiday Tours collects you from your Marrakech hotel or riad. You'll embark on a picturesque drive to the High Atlas Mountains, traversing the mountain range through the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which stands at 2,205 meters above sea level, the highest significant mountain pass in North Africa. Known as the “Gateway to the Sahara,” this pass offers sweeping views of the surrounding terrain.

Day 2 sees you visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou featured in many films and TV shows. You will also see the Dades valley with its amazing oases, lines of date palms and incredible rock formations. Then you will mount your trusty camel for a trek into the desert to your Berber encampment which is your home for the night.

After rising just pre-dawn to see the stunning desert sunrise you will freshen up before heading to the Draa Valley and river to see the very impressive kasbahs in the area. Finally you will be dropped back to your hotel or riad in Marrakech at the end of this final day.

Guests riding camels to their desert camp in Morocco

Luxury Camp 3 days desert trip Marrakech to Merzouga & Camel trek

Price : From $206 USD

This is a three-day luxurious trip in the Moroccan desert with a luxury tent, including a private bathroom in the Merzouga Desert, great food and transport, all included in the $206 package. Each person also gets a camel to ride on through the trip, so you do not miss out on one of the best parts of a Moroccan Safari.

The only downside for some about this package might be that it is a group safari with 17 people. That keeps the cost down and makes it more affordable, but you get a wholesome experience with people with similar interests. Book it with your whole family or go on the adventure with like-minded strangers. You will be in for a memorable time either way.

Mt Toubkal Ascent Express Trek 2 Days 1 Night

Price: From $153 USD

If you wish to have a more thrilling Moroccan escapade besides a desert safari, consider booking the Mt Toubkal Trek. This is more of a hike than a safari but it is something that I know at least a few of my readers will want to do.

Climb up Mount Toubkal while taking in the gorgeous views of the Valley of Imlil and Sidi Chamharouch before heading back to the base camp.

No matter what your skill level is when it comes to mountaineering, you can get up this mountain if you have a decent fitness level and can walk long distances. Hike up and enjoy the beautiful views of the Atlas Mountains, green valleys, and Berber towns along the way and as you reach the summit.

Choosing Your Own Moroccan Safari

Of course you will want to check times and availability for your Moroccan adventure. Check out the Viator widget below to find something that suits your style and budget and go from there. I love both GetYourGuide and Viator as you have a security of paying a large operator who doesn't release your money until you have started on your journey. If there are any challenges they will go into bat for you, however I've used them both for years and never had a single challenge that I can recall.

Conclusion: Why Morocco Safaris are a Must-Experience Adventure

Morocco is the dream destination for safari enthusiasts. Whether you are fond of camel riding, hot air balloon rides, want to get up close with the local wildlife, or simply want to slide across the magical sand dunes in the desert, You will find a suitable safari for your interests here.

With all the options mentioned in the post above, you are set to make your Moroccan Safari experience one to cherish forever!

Luxury & Private Safaris in Morocco

Morocco is a country of many facets, reflecting its rich cultural heritage and long and colorful history. This predominantly Muslim country is renowned for delicious cuisine, beautiful architecture, exotic souks and a flourishing Berber culture. Geographically, Morocco is characterized by rugged mountains, fertile oases, ancient fortified port cities, and magnificent deserts. It is one of only three countries with both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines and has long been a favorite destination for travelers.

Many flights arrive into Casablanca, which is home to the famous Hassan II Mosque and Rick’s Cafe (of movie fame), and serves well for a logistical overnight. Marrakech and Fez are much older cities and they, along with Rabat (the capital and home to several important historical sites), and Meknes are Morocco’s Imperial Cities. Upon entering Fez’s medina (old city), with its dark winding alleyways and ancient sounds and smells, one is transported back in time to its founding in the 9th century. In contrast, Marrakech’s bustling souks (markets) – where one can buy handwoven textiles, daily household goods, along with exotic spices – are very much operating in the moment for locals and visitors, though replete with historical influences. Luxury hotels with elegant courtyards, luxurious linens and modern hammams (bath houses) pamper the most discerning clientele. Traditional and fusion Moroccan cuisine have made restaurants in Morocco destinations for serious foodies. Similarly, for shoppers interested in art, textiles and unique housewares, the choices are endless from refined high-end specialty shops, to prowling open air markets. Top cultural sites include the tomb of Fez’s founder Moulay Idriss II, the medinas of Fez and Marrakech, Skoura’s iconic Kasbah Amridil, and the “blue city” of Chefchaouen . Further afield, the Atlas Mountains and the vast dunes of the Moroccan Sahara beckon those looking for “off the beaten path” experiences, perhaps astride a camel, or in the lush gardens of a beautiful fully inclusive destination hotel such as Dar Ahlam … travelers to Morocco really can “have it all”!

Secrets and Tips from our Experts

  • A great local guide is invaluable, and essential in Fez
  • Don’t miss the photography museum (Maison de la Photographie de Marrakech) and the Majorelle Garden
  • Take a day trip to Meknès
  • For a smaller city experience check out Essaouira on the coast (also a film site for Game of Thrones )
  • Classic, riad-style hotels with an inner courtyard can be noisy if your room does not have air-conditioning – good to double-check.

Is Morocco the right destination for you?

Because Morocco is so diverse, it has a little something for everyone. The jet-set regularly hit the town in Marrakesh, while history, archaeology, and architecture buffs keep busy in cities like Fez and Meknès. Active travelers enjoy sandboarding or camelback safaris in the desert and hiking/camping in the Atlas Mountains. The more adventurous traveler will more fully appreciate all the area’s offerings.  With a range of accommodation, from simple to extraordinary luxury, anyone with a taste for adventure and an eye for beauty, who appreciate experiencing new cultures, tastes, sights and sounds is sure to enjoy Morocco.

When to visit Morocco?

April through early June and September through November are much more comfortable in terms of temperatures, and there are fewer fellow tourists. June through August can be extremely hot, while the winter months are quite cold, especially in the Sahara and Atlas mountains.

How much should I budget for a trip to Morocco?

Morocco: luxury & private safaris.

Costs for food, accommodation, and travel in Morocco are fairly low by European or North American standards. If you eat local, use more basic hotels, and share expenses with another person, the price is reasonable. You could travel well on $300-$500 per person per night; however, with $700 – $1,000 per person per night, you would enjoy luxury and a truly exceptional, high-service experience.

Our favorite areas

Morocco is such an incredibly diverse country that we simply couldn’t pick just one or two areas. Marrakech is a bustling city with an ancient old town, which is endlessly interesting. Travelers, especially the French, head here to enjoy the sun, good food, and lovely people in an exotic, but comfortable and accommodating environment. Fez, on the other hand,  feels much more authentic and is home to many fine artisans, making it a “must visit” city. The narrow alleys in the medina’s make you feel like you are in a time warp that has transported you to the Middle Ages! The Moroccan Sahara and the Atlas Mountains offer unprecedented beauty and encounters with the natural world. A stop in the Ouarzazate / Skoura region offers access to incredible architecture and the opportunity to visit a real oasis. Combining these areas creates the perfect journey, a  complete and unforgettable picture of this incredibly exotic country.

What else should I know before traveling to Morocco?

  • Morocco: Luxury & Private Safaris: People who want clean, orderly destinations that resemble home wouldn’t like Morocco. The sights, smells, and sounds of the Moroccan souks are infamously overwhelming (not to mention getting lost in the city’s winding passages); although a guide can be a lifesaver, particularly if you are unsure of your comfort level. Additionally, single female travelers may not want to explore Morocco alone, and cities, in particular, can be challenging for solo travelers. However, you can get around this by using our excellent local drivers and guides or doing some touring with groups that we can arrange for you.

Ways to experience Morocco

Experiencing Morocco is really all about appreciating the culture and traditions of this truly magical place. Don’t be afraid to be a tourist, particularly in Fez, where history smacks you in the face at every turn. Eat and drink your way through the medina in Marrakech, ask your guide lots of questions, and make a few memorable purchases – leather slippers perhaps, then have an amazing dinner at Le Jardin. You can day trip to a couple of the lesser-known imperial cities, such as Meknès, and travel to the iconic Sahara Desert (even if it’s just for a night!). We also recommend spending one or two nights in the Atlas Mountains hiking and experiencing the raw beauty of the landscape and the local Berber culture. A guided tour of the ancient agricultural workings of an oasis near Skoura is fascinating while exploring a compact town like Essaouira and the beach on your own is a nice way to end your journey.

Great tour covering many aspects of Morocco (city bazaar shopping, camel riding in the desert, and mountain villages) in a short amount of time. Be prepared for lots of driving and minimal free time, I’d suggest spending a couple of days extra after the tour in a nice hotel for some relaxing. Overall I’d recommend it and it’s made me want to return and explore the other cities.

I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for this fantastic tour, it was the most magical experience of Morocco!! Abdellatif and Abdeljalil looked after us like we were family and gave us the most amazing tour of Morocco in only 8 days. Kind and welcoming, they were very generous with their time and knowledge and made sure our trip was extremely comfortable, safe and informative at all times. Each day was a new and wonderful experience, the transport was extremely comfortable and the accomodation was so luxurious and relaxing! Even with the heat in summer it was comfortable and with much less tourists around so was very peaceful. Morocco is now one of my favourite countries to visit after this trip. It was an incredible experience and we will return again. I have not stopped talking about it with my friends and family. Thank you so much Abdellatif and Abdeljalil!!!!

Reviews of Small Group tours to Morocco

We loved our tour with Cultural Morocco Tours! It exceeded our expectations and they provided an excellent and seamless adventure to this beautiful country. Ismael was our driver-he was courteous and drove safely. Had plenty of water, opened doors for us and lugged our luggage. He came with us when we checked in to our hotels and well-I would highly recommend this tour service!
Our tour guide, Hamid, was wonderful! He gets 5 stars!! About the tour….. READ CAREFULLY! If you are a lover of history and historic sites, this trip is for you! If you enjoy long car rides through the country, this trip is for you! You will stay in a different riad (hotel) almost every night, so pack lightly. You will drive to each new city every day for 3-9 hours depending on where you are headed. The riads are beautiful- bring your own wash cloths and wipes. There are several tours throughout the day. Sometimes tours end with a visit to the showroom with the expectation that you will purchase goods. The food is delicious! The Sahara Desert was the most memorable! The camel ride was an experience of a lifetime. The vendors sell the most beautiful goods. Try to get shopping done with the tour guide to avoid pushy vendors. Learn how to bargain and understand their money. I enjoyed Marrakesh and definitely want to go back there! My recommendation to Morocco Tours is to communicate more up front. Provide names of hotels, tour guide, phone numbers and changes ahead of time. More communication!!! Again, we LOVE Hamid!!!
The tour was really good and had a great group. Abdul our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the places we were and we definitely had a laugh with him! He also had some good recommendations for food. The accommodation we stayed in in each place were alright, some better than others but pretty good considering the price I paid for the tour. There were a couple of things on the itinerary that were mentioned that we would see or go to that we didn't, but there were a couple of those things that we sorted ourselves between us in the group. Would definitely recommend this tour if you want to see more of Morocco than just Marrakech.
