Ashes 2023 schedule: Full list of fixtures, venues and start times for England v Australia series

Australia will tour England for five men’s Test matches and the women’s Ashes and in 2023 — here’s the full schedule, list of fixtures and match timings of Ashes 2023.

England will host Australia for five men’s Test matches across June and July, 2023, in a quest to regain the Ashes that they conceded when they lost 0-4 on the 2017/18 tour of Australia. Since then, England have drawn 2-2 at home and lost 0-4 again in 2021/22, when they toured Australia. However, with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum at the helm, England will back themselves in Test cricket’s oldest contest.

This will be the first time in 139 years that England will not host an Ashes Test match in August. The Test matches will be played at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

England will also host Australia women for the usual multi-format Ashes series, comprising a Test match, three Twenty20 Internationals, and three ODIs. The match, at Trent Bridge, will be only the second five-day Test in the history of women’s cricket, after the North Sydney Oval Test of 1991/92 between Australia and England. Australia have been holding the Women’s Ashes since their 10-6 win in 2015: they drew 8-8 in 2017/18 (at home) and won 12-4 in each of 2019 (in England) and 2021/22 (at home).

Right, I’d say that’s enough from me. You can spring up your T20 leagues, franchises and all that – but you’ll never beat this. One Test down and four more thrillers on the way, with Lord’s the next stop. Can’t wait for it.

Just rewinding back a bit: it’s worth remembering just how good Cummins was with the ball yesterday, taking 4-63 from his 18.2 overs. Gave it everything and produced one of the great deliveries, bowling Pope with a ridiculous inswinger.

“Fair play, right result,” says Stephen Cottrell. “I didn’t agree with the declaration but it made the game on a road and gave England every chance of a win. Only gripe with stokes was keeping Root on after he’d done the trick. From vaulting genius to self indulgence in the time it takes to say ‘Be Here Now’.”

Usman Khawaja is Player of the Match after a brilliant performance across both innings, showing everyone that he can do it in England, too. “I’m not going to lie, I was absolutely shitting myself for the last five minutes,” he says at the post-match presentation. “This is probably my favourite Test match I’ve played in so far.”

I get that people are going to take issue with the declaration. But, c’mon, wasn’t all of this just loads of fun? Isn’t that all that really matters for Test cricket right now?

Late on this, from an hour ago, but just want to share this from Adrian Paterson:

“Am following OBO from a lakeside Oslo train, while Dad has blood transfusion back in London. Both lasting 4 hours so far and due to finish in around 40 minutes. A tense simultaneity: Dad’s not such a cricket fan but remembers wartime matches, so we are updating each other by text. I didn’t much like the declaration (or the diagnosis) but if England pull this off (and Dad gets well) might have to tip what remains of my rational mind out of the window and agree that Stokes has power over all things.”

Hope all goes well with your dad, Adrian. Not the result you wanted, but what a game!

Right then, let me just catch my breath again. Australia were 227-8, 54 runs away and looking out of it. But Cummins, Australia’s captain, thumped Joe Root’s off spin and stayed resolute in the face of short-pitched bowling from the English. Nathan Lyon, a champion cricketer himself, held on from the other end and produced a couple of stunning shots down the ground. The Test champions of the world will go to Lord’s 1-0 up. Just a stunning five days, and a staggering final hour, too.

Cummins’ teammates are all over him. And Nathan Lyon is deservedly getting lots of love too. What a stand they put together, 55 off 12 overs.

AUSTRALIA WIN BY TWO WICKETS!

Short from Robinson to Cummins, and Pope dives brilliantly at short leg to his right to stop the Australians from stealing another run.

But Cummins does the job, squirting a short ball down to third man for four! They’ve done it! Incredible!

“What a time to answer the call of nature at 3:45am in Australia. Cricket eh? Flipping heck.. " Rowan Sweeney with great timing.

Cummins lets Broad hit him with the short ball. Twice. He won’t budge. Cummins dabs the ball down straight and Broad gets low to halt the prospect of a single. Cummins then pushes to midwicket to steal a single.

Australia need three to win.

Lyon pats away a short ball from Broad , and it drops short of the man at short leg, Ollie Pope. Then Lyon pulls, and it goes past Pope. One more run. Australia need four to win.

91st over: Australia 276-8 (Lyon 15, Cummins 39) Robinson delivers a short ball to Cummins that flies down the leg side. Another short one sneaks past the bat and gloves, Cummins doing well to evade it. And then another bumper follows that Cummins gets under. And then a yorker! Cummins keeps it out, though, backing away as he tried to slap it through the off side. Robinson sends the next one down the leg side. And a dot seals it. The agony for all continues.

Australia need 5 to win.

Australia, I repeat, need five to win. England need two wickets.

90th over: Australia 276-8 (Cummins 39, Lyon 15) A conversation ensues between Broad, Robinson and Stokes before the final ball of the 90th over. It’s definitely not about tee times tomorrow.

Broad runs in and Cummins clips away for one. Australia need five runs to win and go 1-0 up in the Ashes.

Lyon then clips away for one more. Australia need six to win.

Broad runs in to Cummins and sneaks one past the outside edge! A gorgeous delivery that nibbled away off the scrambled seam – but no bat on it. Broad gets the crowd going, whipping them up, but Cummins clips away for one. Broad is still smiling, somehow, perhaps screaming internally.

WHAT A SHOT FROM NATHAN LYON! He flicks Stuart Broad over mid-on for four and Australia need seven runs to win.

89th over: Australia 269-8 (Cummins 37, Lyon 10)

Lyon pulls for a single. 13 required. Robinson thunders in and Cummins’ forward defence is HUGE. Dot. Robinson slaps Cummins’ pad but the appeal isn’t convincing – that was going down the leg side. 12 required. Lyon clips to the leg side, but there’s no run. A bumper follows, and nothing comes of it.

Australia need 12 to win.

88th over: Australia 267-8 (Lyon 9, Cummins 37) Cummins pushes into the off side for one. Lyon resists, pokes at one he shouldn’t but there’s no edge. Broad wonders just what he must do to finish this. He’s been immense all game. Edgbaston roars once more, but Lyon clips away for a single. He keeps the strike.

“As a 60 year old this is the first test match I’ve watched in its entirety,” says Neil Clough. “Have this awful feeling I’ve really been missing out. Brilliant entertainment.” Welcome to the party, Neil, it really is something.

Australia need 14 to win.

87th over: Australia 265-8 (Cummins 36, Lyon 8) Robinson takes the new ball from the other end, not Anderson, and Cummins pushes into the off side for one. Does Robinson stick to the basics against Lyon or does he continue to go short? He strays onto the pads and Lyon clips nicely for a single.

Cummins drives aerially through the covers and Crawley fumbles in trying to stop the boundary – IT’S FOUR! Cummins gets one off the last ball of the over to keep the strike.

Australia need 16 to win.

Australia vs England, 3rd ODI - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

A one-sided game to wrap up what was a rather one-sided ODI series. England were never really there mentally except during that big partnership between Vince and Billings at the SCG. You can't really fault them really, having had to play a technically inconsequential 50-over series just three days after a victorious-but-taxing T20 World Cup campaign. But that's the demand of the modern player, schedules are so packed and there is no room for much rest. Australia on their part were ruthless and gave the tourists nothing at all. England will be glad to fly back home after what's been a very long time on the road. Speaking of which, I'm also glad to be wrapping up for the day, time to have some rest and chill. Pat Cummins | Australia captain: It's been fantastic, all three games bowlers did their job and the batters did theirs. This might just be the best ODI that I've been part of. The opening partnership was great, it was a tricky wicket early on and the other blokes then having a hit later on. Everything was perfect. The way he (Head) has stepped into Finchy's shoes, it looks good. It shows we have good depth. Abbott also did a fair job.

Jos Buttler | England captain: We tried our best but fell a long way short. Australia played really well. Lots to be proud of, don't need long memories to remember the scenes here last week (T20 World Cup win).

David Warner | Player of the Series: This is very special, this is for the team. We played some outstanding cricket. Bowlers did a fantastic job and the batters just executed as well as we could. 2024 is a long time away, lot of cricket to be played across all formats. If I'm keeping myself fit and scoring runs, I might be in (for the next ODI on Australian soil). I think we got a fine man here (Cummins) for the captaincy. Just looking to contribute what I can to the team. If I can overturn that (ban) someway, maybe captain a Big Bash team, I'd love to help the younger generation to come up the ranks.

Travis Head | Player of the Match: Felt nice to contribute and nice to back with Davey (Warner) as an opening pair. Hopefully long may it continue. Yeah, it was a bit tricky early on, first 30-40 runs. I think we (him and Warner) both like playing together, we're both positive and one feeds off the other well. Been a nice start for us.

21:52 Local Time, 10:52 GMT, 16:22 IST: A complete no-contest in the end. Of course, the target was always way above par here at the MCG but England never showed any fight whatsoever. They lost Malan very early and although Roy got a start along with Vince, neither of them were able to get the sort of rhythm that would have threatened the Aussies. And once that partnership was broken, it was a procession of sorts with most batters falling either to ill-advised shots or some very disciplined bowling. The Australian quicks used the surface very well, hitting the pitch hard and getting the ball to nibble a bit both ways. Extra bounce was on offer too and English batters were all at sea. Zampa helped himself to a four-fer too, largely helped by the scoreboard pressure and some reckless batting. He did have a great series overall though, bowling with beautiful control and subtle variations. As for England, this match and the series is one they would like to forget.

Nowhere close to the pitch of it and misses it completely. Rattle of timber and that's the end of that. Olly Stone b Zampa 4(4) [4s-1]

Mitchell Marsh to Olly Stone, no run, jaffa! Marsh responds well, dragging his length back a touch and getting this to straighten from an off stump line. Too good a nut for most batters, let alone the no.11 and Stone is beaten

Mitchell Marsh to Olly Stone, FOUR , not a bad shot at all for a no.11! Textbook off-drive, leaning on this full ball and creaming it wide of mid-off. Beautifully timed and it raced across the turf

The full schedule has been confirmed for rugby's Autumn Internationals, with the giants of the Southern Hemisphere once again coming to take on the Six Nations teams in a busy month of rugby.

England will have Tests against New Zealand and Australia before hosting world champions South Africa, a repeat of their World Cup semi-final, before completing their run of fixtures against Japan.

Six Nations champions Ireland have Friday night matches against New Zealand and Argentina ahead of further games against Fiji and Australia, while the All Blacks' autumn tour also contains trips to France and Italy.

Autumn Nations Series: All the 2024 fixtures including dates and kick-off times

Ireland v New Zealand split with Autumn Nations Series fixtures.

The 2024 Autumn Nations Series fixtures have been confirmed with blockbuster match-ups across the board in every weekend of November.

The action gets underway on November 2 with a double-header as England welcome the All Blacks to Twickenham before attention turns to Murrayfield where Scotland face Fiji.

Three full weekends

After just two games in the opening weekend, the intensity ramps up the following week with a replay of last year’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final between Ireland and New Zealand in the only game on Friday, November 8.

The next day sees England host Australia, Italy face Argentina and France take on Japan before two games on the Sunday with Wales bracing for the Fijian challenge and Scotland hosting the world champion Springboks .

Ireland plays on the Friday again the following weekend and this time around they welcome Los Pumas to their backyard. There are two blockbuster match-ups on Saturday, November 16 with a World Cup semi-final replay as England play the Springboks while Les Bleus host the All Blacks.

The curtain raiser for those clashes is Scotland facing Portugal at Murrayfield. A fascinating clash between Italy and Georgia begins the action on November 17 with Wales hosting the Wallabies to close out the weekend.

In the last full weekend, it is Les Bleus who will get the action underway as they host Argentina in the only game on Friday, November 22.

The next day it is Ireland’s turn to face the Fijian physicality while the Springboks travel to Cardiff for a Test against Wales and the Azzurri host the All Blacks. Sunday of that weekend sees Scotland clash with the Wallabies while Eddie Jones returns to Twickenham when Japan face England.

There is only one game in the final weekend of November as it is the Wallabies’ turn to travel to the Aviva Stadium to face Six Nations champions Ireland.
