Riding a motorbike through Hai Van Tunnel is unacceptable, you have to get to the Hai Van Tunnel transshipment point, then buy tickets for you and your motorcycles. You and your motorcycles are transferred through the tunnel by car.

After the stretch of the pass, you come across a destination not to be missed - Lang Co Bay - one of the most beautiful bays that seem to have no human footprints yet. Passing Lang Co Bay, you continue to the end of the highway to Hue City Center.

Travel by motorbike through Hai Van Pass takes from 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. Hai Van Pass is one of the most dangerous pass-roads in Vietnam with high slopes and many hidden parts so it is easy for an accident to occur. Downhill by motorbike on the road on one side is a high mountain, the other is a deep abyss certainly not for those who have unstable driving skills and weak mentality.

The Perfect Itinerary For Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue In Central Vietnam (2024 Updated Travel Guide)

August 10, 2023 by Bino 20 Comments

The central part of Vietnam where the cities of Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang are located, is considered to be one of the main touristic centers of the country. The region contains a diversity of attractions ranging from a UNESCO World Heritage town to archeological sites and even Vietnam’s former imperial capital. For outdoorsy types, the area also has plenty to offer in terms of beaches and you can find plenty of award-winning luxury resorts here. The world’s largest cave – Hang Son Doong – can also be found in the region.

If you are also visiting Hanoi during your trip to Vietnam, check out my suggested Hanoi itinerary here

If you are visiting Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue and thinking how to organize your itinerary and long you need to spend in the area, I would suggest you go for 5 days / 4 nights minimally. The three cities are accessible from each other to be day trip destinations but I would suggest spending at least a night per city to really appreciate the distinct vibe in each place.

Where you start really depends on your personal preference and where you are coming from. During my trip to Central Vietnam, I arrived via Da Nang International Airport and headed to Hue right away as it was the farthest of the three cities. From Da Nang, Hue is around a 2 hour drive.

Table of Contents

Day 1: Da Nang

Da Nang has developed rapidly over the last few years. I remember seeing a construction frenzy of hotels during my very first visit around a decade ago. When I returned recently, I found the coast lined with lodgings catering to all budgets – from local hotels to private full-service resorts. That being said, Da Nang is also one of Vietnam’s larger cities so those intending to come here to experience the country’s fast-paced commerce can also find a less congested version of that here.

Son Tra Peninsula

linh ung buddhist temple

linh ung buddhist temple

Da Nang itself does not have many tourist attractions. Most places worth including in your Da Nang itinerary are at the outskirts of town. I would personally suggest exploring those attractions located in the city on your first day here especially if you arrive some time during midday or the afternoon. You can easily get a cab (Grab) to the Son Tra Peninsula . Here, the Linh Ung Buddhist Temple comes with a large 67-meter tall statue of Guan Yin facing the sea, a pagoda as well as several vantage points from where one can view the ever-changing skyline of Da Nang. If these views aren’t enough, one can also hire a motorbike for a ride up the mountaintop view point of Ban Co .

Marble Mountain

marble mountain

marble mountain

Another popular religious site in Da Nang to include in your itinerary is Marble Mountain – a series of limestone rock formations with temples and shrines hidden inside caves. It is located on the opposite side of town, on the road going towards Hoi An. You can stop by for lunch somewhere in Da Nang after visiting Son Tra Peninsula and before heading to Marble Mountain. If you’d rather have someone arrange all the transport for you, you can check out this Da Nang day tour which covers Son Tra Peninsula, Marble Mountain and even a short sojourn to Hoi An.

Unwind at My Khe Beach

aerial view of my khe beach

aerial view of my khe beachIt would be late afternoon by this time, just nice for a walk or to lounge by the beach. After returning to town, stop by My Khe Beach which is said to be one of the best beaches in Vietnam. Its curved shape does look impressive when seen from an elevated area, such as from the roof decks of one of the many beachside hotels, but don’t expect to find translucent waters or great snorkeling opportunities here.

Home-style Cooking at Bep Hen + Supper Idea in Da Nang

hearty homecooked dishes at bep hen

hearty homecooked dishes at bep hen

For dinner, I recommend going to Bep Hen for some hearty homecooked dishes. During my visit, I saw a number of local Vietnamese folks dining there which was a good sign. Recommended dishes include their Chicken with Chili and Lemongrass as well as Caramelized Pork Belly in Claypot. Alternatively, head to Banh Xeo Ba Duong , hidden deep within a narrow alley, for some authentic Vietnamese pancakes (Banh Xeo). For the latter, do note that there are multiple Banh Xeo places in that alley with similar sounding names. The one you should go for is the one at the end.

Day 2: Enjoy the Cool Climes of Ba Na Hills

ba na hills

ba na hills

Originally built by the French as a mountain retreat, Ba Na Hills is a hill station located west of Da Nang city center (around 45 minutes away). Sitting at an elevation of almost 1,500 meters, it is a popular resort among locals and foreigners alike – thanks to a plethora of insta-worthy sights.

golden bridge - ba na hills

golden bridge – ba na hills

Getting here usually involves a day tour . While you can purchase tickets and hire your own transport to get here, it is still more economical if you join one of those all-inclusive guided day tours that take you around the park. Another advantage of the guided day tour is that the guide can help you navigate through the crowds / tourist hordes that are present in Ba Na Hills almost everyday. A typical trip involves at least 3 cable car rides, ample time to explore the Golden Bridge , Linh Ung Pagoda (similarly named but different from the one in Son Tra), French Village as well as a buffet lunch. You can book this Ba Na Hills tour here or purchase standalone tickets to Sunworld Ba Na Hills separately.

Tip: As a rule of thumb, Ba Na Hills is 10 degrees celsius cooler than the city center of Da Nang. During summer, you can probably get by wearing light t-shirt and shorts when it’s 26 degrees celsius in Ba Na Hills (means it’s 36 degrees in Da Nang City) but do note that temperatures can fall to 20 degrees in Da Nang during winter which means 10 degrees in Ba Na Hills. Also, rain is fairly common in Ba Na Hills in the afternoon regardless of the season.

After heading back to Da Nang, get your luggage and head to Hue which you can easily do through a private car transfer. Do note that it’s generally cheaper to book private car transfers than getting a car from Grab.

Day 3: Hue – Vietnam’s Imperial Capital

At first glance, Hue seems just like one of your typical midsized Vietnamese cities but spend a little more time here and you’ll soon realize its cultural importance to the Vietnamese people. The city is divided into two sides by the Perfume River (it no way smells like perfume) with the imposing Imperial Citadel situated at the north side while the commercial area is situated to the south.

Visiting the Royal Tombs

da nang to hue travel time

Start your Hue itinerary by heading to the royal tombs first. There are 6 such tombs but the ones worth checking out are the Tomb of Minh Mang , Tomb of Tu Duc and the best one being the Tomb of Khai Dinh . For the latter, you’ll have to climb a number of steps with statues of soldiers and horses surrounding the pathway leading to the top. The tomb itself is quite grand with plenty of carvings and you can spot a distinct European influence as well.

Thien Mu Pagoda

da nang to hue travel time

Afterwards, head to Thien Mu Pagoda . One of the most iconic sights in Hue, the pagoda was built in 1844 during the reign of Emperor Thieu Tri. While the tower is undoubtedly the highlight, it’s also worth checking out the main temple within the inner courtyard. Thien Mu Pagoda is an excellent place to visit in the morning as most tour groups would be exploring the Imperial City at that time.

Imperial City of Hue & Purple Forbidden City

da nang to hue travel time

If you are arriving in the afternoon, make your way to the Imperial Enclosure as most of the tour groups would have already visited in the morning. Enter via the Ngo Mon Gate , the main entryway to the Imperial City. While inside the complex, check out the Thai Hoa Palace , the emperor’s coronation hall. The Truong San Residence or the Queen Mother’s Palace, The Mieu – the ancestral temple of the emperors, the Purple Forbidden City as well as the Pavilion of Splendor . The bulk of the Imperial City was destroyed during the Vietnam War and restoration is a painfully slow process.

Tip: For more of Hue, check out this dedicated guide

If you find yourself just in time for dinner after exploring the Imperial City, do check out Les Jardines de La Carambole (not to be confused with another restaurant called La Carambole in the other side of town) for fine French food at super affordable prices. The setting is in a colonial villa which adds to the charm. This is also a wonderful place to sample Hue favorites such as ban nam (rice cake wrapped in banana leaf) and ban khoai (crispy pancakes) in a hygienic setting.

delicious mee hen from com hen hoa dong

delicious mee hen from com hen hoa dong

Alternatively, have a taste of authentic Hue cuisine by checking out one of the local eateries in town. I highly recommend making the trip to the island of Con Hen for a bowl of Com Hen or Baby Clam Rice. The most popular place to have this is at Com Hen Hoa Dong which is located in a narrow alley in the middle of the island. Prices are extremely reasonable and instead of rice, you can also have the baby clams together with noodles or vermicelli. I chose to have mine with noodles. It was one of my favorite finds in Hue. Noodles were springy and the baby clams carried a most delightful briny flavor.

Day 4: Hoi An Old Town

Tip: This itinerary assumes a 2 day/1night stay for the Hue segment but if you have an extra day to spare, you can check out the UNESCO World Heritage Phong Nha Cave which has one of the longest underground rivers in the world. Going there and back requires one whole day. You can join a private tour to get there.

Leave Hue for Hoi An. If you are not in a hurry, drop by Hue’s less touristy Japanese Covered Bridge which is located at the town outskirts. The setting is much more charming than the one in Hoi An with a lily pond adding color to the relatively narrow stream that the bridge serves to connect.

da nang to hue travel time

On the way to Hoi An, you will pass by some stunning scenery such as the Hai Van Pass and Lang Co , the latter which now has a couple of upscale resorts such as the Banyan Tree Lang Co. You will reach Hoi An in approximately three hours if coming from Hue.

da nang to hue travel time

Hoi An is just the kind of town I’d imagine people would stay in when they want to take it slow. I personally returned to Hoi An a couple of years after my first visit to spend 3 days just exploring the nooks and crannies of this charming community. Compared to Vietnam’s other cities, Hoi An really centers itself in tourism and everywhere you go, you’ll find establishments catering to them.

Tip: You don’t have to pay a fee to enter the old town of Hoi An but if you are thinking of visiting the clan associations or some of the top temples, you will have to buy the ticket which allows you to visit up to 5 attractions. Hoi An’s entrance fee costs VND 120,000 for international visitors.

Hoi An is not the kind of place I imagine people would go to in order to see some iconic attraction. The attraction is the town itself and not some specific monument. However, there are plenty of “smaller” attractions to keep the traveler busy. Some of my picks include the clan associations such as the Phuoc Kien Assembly Hall , Hainan Assembly Hall , Trung Hoa Assembly Hall and the Cantonese Assembly Hall which are best explored by bike. The Japanese Covered Bridge is probably the most well-known place in Hoi An and the area is the waiting point for most tour groups making day trips in the town.

white rose dumpling from miss ly

white rose dumpling from miss ly

Food-wise, the culinary scene in Hoi An mostly caters to travelers but it’s pretty good. My top picks include Morning Glory (near the Japanese Covered Bridge), Miss Ly Cafe and Cao Lau Thanh  for delicious Cao Lau or Vietnam’s version of roast pork noodles. If you don’t mind queuing, also check out Banh Mi Phuong – the famous banh mi eatery recommended by Anthony Bourdain and is hugely popular even among Vietnamese people.

Tip: While in Hoi An, you will find several people asking for your business for tailor-made suits / business shirts / dresses. Quality varies and as a general rule of thumb, those tailors with actual storefronts can churn out clothes with better quality. Those without an actual shop end up routing all the work to a centralized outsourced tailor at the second floor of the Hoi An Market. If you intend to have a suit or dress done, try to do it at the start of your Hoi An stay. While you may be promised a turnaround of 1 day, you’ll need to allocate an extra day or two for alterations, if needed.

Day 5: Day Trips From Hoi An

da nang to hue travel time

Hoi An offers a couple of decent day trip possibilities including ancient Khmer style ruins and some outlying islands. I love checking out ancient ruins so I decided to go to My Son , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is around an hour away from Hoi An. My Son is an ancient Hindu archeological complex, built by the Champa people who used the inhabit the region around Central Vietnam. There were originally over 70 temples around My Son as documented by the French during the 19th century but much of these were destroyed during the Vietnam War. Today, only around 18 structures remain. My Son is around 1 hour away by car from Hoi An. To get there, your best bet is to join an inexpensive day tour . These tours usually last half a day and include a modest lunch.

After returning to Hoi An, one of the fun activities to do is to go aboard one of Vietnam’s iconic round basket boats that wade through coconut palm tree-lined mangroves. The boat ride itself takes roughly an hour and passengers are given the opportunities to throw a fishing net and to paddle for part of the journey. An especially fun part of the ride is when the paddler spins rapidly in circles, with or without the passengers on the boat.

These boats are located in the eastern part of Hoi An. Trips can be booked via Grab or by including round trip transfers when you book the attraction.

Day 6: Da Nang

After having visited Da Nang’s attractions the previous day, you can head back to your place of origin / Da Nang Airport on the 6th day or spend more time chilling in one of Da Nang’s many resorts. The city is blessed with a nice shoreline facing the South China Sea and there are plenty of compelling resort options here such as the InterContinental Da Nang Sun Peninsula or the Banyan Tree Lang Co .

Where to Stay in Central Vietnam

As the three cities are quite far apart from each other, it is probably best to split your hotel between Hue and Hoi An. Stay in a Da Nang hotel if you would like to have a nice beach experience. Stay in a Hoi An hotel for at least a night if you wish to witness the contrasting scenes of the ancient town both in the day and at night.

Hoi An: I have visited Hoi An multiple times and have stayed in these hotels: Allegro Hoi An as it’s one of the few good boutique hotels to be within short walking distance to the old town. If convenience is your priority, then go for this hotel especially if you are in Hoi An only for 1 night. The overall feel was quite luxurious and the guestroom was huge despite room prices being reasonable. You could also use their bikes for free. The other hotel I stayed in was Lantana Riverside Boutique Hotel & Spa . This property is around 20 minute walk from town but hotel guests can rent a bike for $1 a day. What I loved about Lantana despite the distance is that the room price was especially cheap and even came with breakfast. You can also compare prices for more hotels in Hoi An here .

Hue: In Hue, I stayed in the Indochine Palace Hotel which is located in the newer and more commercial part of town. It is a large hotel with a nice imperial feel. Breakfast was one of the best I’ve had at the same price range. During my third visit to Hue, I stayed at Melia Vinpearl Hue which is also the tallest building in the city. Service was excellent and the hotel also has a shopping mall in the same building. You can also compare prices for more hotels in Hue here .

Da Nang: Most visitors who come to Da Nang opt to stay in one of the coastal hotels. The Sala Da Nang Beach Hotel is a popular hotel with sweeping views of the beach and the cape from the rooftop pool level. Further up the cape is Le Sands Oceanfront . If you need a hotel room with apartment-like facilities (i.e. separate living area, microwave), you can check out their 1-bedroom residence category. If you prefer to stay in a newer hotel you can check out Radisson Da Nang .

Getting Around Between Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue

Best way to get around is to hire your own car with driver although these days, it is also feasible to do a mix of Grab and joining local tours. The bulk of the places listed here (except for the more isolated My Son, Ba Na Hills and the imperial tombs in Hue) can be easily visited via ride sharing apps. For intercity transfers, it is cheaper to pre-book transport (i.e. to travel between Da Nang, Hoi An, Ba Na Hills and Hue). For transfers originating from Da Nang, you can check here . For transfers originating from Hoi An, you can check here .

Here is a rough guide for the travel time between Da Nang and the key cities in Central Vietnam:

How to travel from Da Nang Airport to Da Nang City Center (~15 minutes) – book here How to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An (~45 minutes) – book here How to travel from Da Nang to Hue (~2 hours) – book here How to travel from Hoi An to Da Nang (~45 minutes) – book here

Travel Tips for Central Vietnam

  • In this age of uncertainty, it may be advisable to have travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage. If you reside in Singapore, check out Starr Travelead , one of the cheapest travel insurance. They have a promotion running until 29th Feb that comes with FREE Apple AirTag (worth S$45) that may even be worth more than the cost of the insurance itself.
  • Unless staying in one of Da Nang’s exclusive resorts is part of the plan, I would personally recommend basing yourself in either Hoi An or Hue as there’s simply much more to do in those two towns. However, if you intend to visit Ba Na Hills, a one-night stay in Da Nang may be warranted.
  • It is still possible to pay for purchases in USD in several places including shops, restaurants and other establishments used to dealing with tourists. I ran out of Vietnamese Dong once and my cab driver even accepted USD. However, do note that small local eateries and grocers might accept only local currency. If you urgently need to change money and can’t find a bank that is still open, look out for jewelry stores. Their rates are often better than banks.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I’m planning Hanoi, Ha Long, and Tam Coc (Ninh Binh) first. Then take a train to Hue reaching in the morning. Hire a car, see sights and proceed to Hoi An (nice to the drive is scenic). In my country Uber is point to point. Is it the same there? Will the Uber guy be Ok with a bit of sight-seeing in Hue before taking me to Hoi An?

Hi Satty, it’s also point to point there.

In a few weeks, I will be travelling for a few days in Central Vietnam by myself, and considered taking the train from Danang to Hue. I note that this mode is not one you recommend, as you refer to shared-app rides like Uber or Grab instead. Is there any reason for your recommendation of a car ride instead of the train?

I would appreciate your take on this question.

Many thanks

August 31, 2018 at 5:09 pm

Yes my assumption is whoever using this itinerary is traveling with others. In that case, it’s not a bad idea to use a ride-sharing app. For solo travelers, the train option may be more economical.

Suggest Hanoi to Hue. Flight or train. Hue is definitely good for a whole day if not more. Then drive down to Da Nang via Hai Van pass. Halt at Lan Co Bay for seafood. It’s a fabulous drive. You may stay at Da Nang or proceed directly to Hoi An. Minimum 2 to 3 nights at Hoi An. If you’re flying out of Da Nang then spend a day there. All the sights of Da Nang can however be done from Hoi An

DA NANG TO HUE TRAIN: THE MOST FAMOUS ROUTE IN VIETNAM

danang hue train

Whether you are traveling in Vietnam from north to south or viceversa, you will have to choose how to get from Da Nang to Hue when you are halfway there, and the answer to this question is by train!

Jump to our train booking tutorial here

The beautiful Hai Van Pass  lies in the middle between Da Nang and Hue , boasting stunning views of the mountains and the jungle on one side, and amazing tropical beaches and the sea on the other side.

Your 3-hour long trip will be full of great views! Here’s how to get your train ticket.

There are 3 ways to book a seat on a train in Vietnam:

  • Book online on the Vietnamese railway website dsvn.vn. After you choose your seat, date and time, you will have to go yourself to the nearest train station with the e-mail confirmation in order to pay for your ticket in VND cash (unless you have a Vietnamese credit card to proceed with payment online, foreign cards are not accepted). You don’t need to go to the station you are leaving from to collect your tickets, for example we got our tickets to travel from Nha Trang to Da Nang when we were in Dalat station!
  • Book online on amt.12go.asia , a very nice and clear website which allows you to use all the main global credit cards . Prices are fair, same as on the Vietnamese one, you will only have to pay a processing fee (around 1.5$). You will receive your e-tickets straight to your e-mail, and you will have to show it when you board the train. We used it when we were in Cambodia to buy tickets from Ho Chi Minh to Phan Thiet, it was a very nice surprise, sometimes we can’t even use this simple system back home! Keep in mind that tickets are available online 60-90 days in advance.
  • Just head to the train station and buy the ticket that suits you. Most of the employees can speak a basic English which is enough to do the job.

how to book a train vietnam

What seat/bed do I need to buy?

Follow our tutorial here.

It depends on how long your journey is. The  Da Nang to Hue train is a 3-hour ride, so a seat is the best option,  just skip to the seat type info.

In case you will travel longer distances later in Vietnam, read here about bed options. Trains in Vietnam are very slow, which is good both to enjoy the landscapes by day, and to get some sleep at night. If it’s gonna be a 6-hour travel or more, we recommend to do it on a sleeper train overnight. You have these choices:

  • 6-bed compartment with hard beds : they are really hard and thin mattresses. The compartment is quite narrow and crowded, good if you want to chat with other travellers and if you are on a budget (the price is even cheaper if you choose the upped bed), not that good if you are looking for some rest and/or privacy. Normally there’s a fan on the ceiling very close to the upper bed.
  • 4-bed compartment with soft beds : comfortable enough to fulfill their name. Good space, decent mattress. We used this option, got the upper beds, shared the compartment with a very polite Vietnamese family (mum, dad and baby), had a very good sleep, and woke up at 8 am, in time to get ready to step off in Da Nang.

On every coach, there’s a toilet, a pair of sinks with mirrors, basic needs to prepare for the night.

If you have a shorter journey , you can try a very local experience like:

  • hard seat : you will enter a bare coach with nothing but wooden benches on the long sides. Not really comfortable as a sofa, but for a few hours that will do. Very nice experience to see how local people travel everyday. No numbered seats, so get on early to secure a decent spot. Ridiculously cheap, we even got served a snack with a bottle of water complementary.
  • soft seat : a “normal” train seat as we know it, less crowded coach with numbered seats.

Basically every Vietnamese train runs from Hanoi all the way to Ho Chi Minh City, or the other way round. For this reason, timetables are variable, you need to book some days before to find a soft bed which normally are the first to sell out.

Standard seats are bookable at the station only on the same day of travel, so just show up at the station as early as you can. Book online in advance to be sure you will have your numbered seat.

Train travelling in Vietnam is a rewarding experience that we definitely suggest to try! Plane tickets don’t cost much more than a night ride on a train, but on the latter you’ll be able to relax, sleep, meet new people, and enjoy the views.

Da Nang has been our home town for more than 1 year, so feel free to ask us anything you would like to know! The city of Da Nang is definitely underrated and not well known among travelers, which makes it not very busy with tourists as other Vietnamese locations, but at the same time full of outdoor activities with awesome beaches and great landscapes.

Read here what to do&see in Da Nang .

If you need inspiration search stays in Da Nang here.  One of our favorite places along the beach is Mercury Beach Da Nang , a cool spot located very close to the beach.

Hue historical city  features a bunch of activities to do, from visiting the imperial city within the walls to hitting the local market along the river. Probably two half days and one night are good enough to make the most of your stay, or you can add one more day if you are keen on visiting all the emperor’s tombs. There are many cheap stays in Hue that will allow you to meet other fellow travellers, before you continue your trip in Vietnam either southbound or northbound. Recently we stayed at Hue Nino Hotel and it was just perfect: the staff speak good English and are very friendly, the rooms are nice and clean, the location is great nearby the river, and you get all this for a cheap price! da nang to hue travel time

Hi there guys, what is the best time of the year to come to Danang? We were thinking of coming in August. Also, we have 3 kids, what are the best 3 cities you would recommend visiting without traveling for too long in between? Thank you@

Hi Inna! August is a good time to visit Da Nang, the sun is out all day, it’s very hot and dry. If you don’t want to travel too much, the 3 hotspots in Central Vietnam Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An are close to each other. Da Nang is the biggest city with the international airport, with a nice beach and riverside. Hue is 100km north, more historic with the ancient capital city of Vietnam. Hoi An is 30km south to Da Nang and it’s the most touristy place, a nice little town especially beautiful by night when it’s all lit up with lanterns. Both Da Nang and Hoi An have long beaches that would be ideal for families, plus it’s fun to cycle around Hoi An through the rice paddies. As you read above, the train between Hue and Da Nang takes 3 hours and has amazing views, whilst it’s super easy to get to Hoi An from Da Nang by taxi!

4 Best Ways on How to Get from Hue to Danang & Vice Versa?

4 Best Ways on How to Get from Hue to Danang & Vice Versa?

Travel from Danang to Hue

Henley Dam

Coming to Central Vietnam, Hue and Danang are definitely the top 2 tourist cities that you must visit. Wondering what’s the best way to travel between these two famous cities? Keep reading to find out the way on how to get from Hue to Danang and vice versa that suits you the most!

I. Distance from Hue to Danang

hue to danang map

Both of the cities are located in Central Vietnam, particularly Central Coast, so the distance is not too far, just about 100 kilometers. With this distance, it’s possible to transfer between 2 cities by bus , train and motorbike as well.

II. 4 Means of Transportation to Travel from Hue to Danang?

1. travel by bus.

bus hue to danang

Travelling by bus is so far the most popular way to transfer from Hue to Danang, thanks to the short distance between them.

► Booking : Two highly-recommended companies for bus travels are Hoang Long Tourist and The Sinh Tourist. You can go on their websites and call the hotline for more booking information.

► Route : the bus from Hue to Danang will go through Hai Van Pass, like mostly other vehicles

► Duration : a bus ride will take about 3.5 hours

► Cost : around 100,000VND/one way (~$5)

► Pros and cons : This is the cheapest option, so it’s great for people who want to travel around Vietnam on a tight budget. For just around $5 , you will get to experience a comfortable sleeper seat with toilets, TVs… There are also numerous departures from Hue to Danang daily, so you can choose a time slot that fits your schedule the best.

However, the bus is usually slower than trains and taxis , and the time depends on the traffic situation , and the hop-in and hop-off time, since the bus usually stops at many points on the way to pick up guests. Also, if you travel by bus, it’s nearly impossible to ask for stopping randomly on the way to take photos , since many other people are also on the bus and they might be in a hurry.

2. Travel by Train

Another option to travel from Hue to Danang is by train, and this option has several advantages as well! The train does not cost too much more than the bus, but the travel time is shorter , and the seat is comfortable . Also, you will get to see the great scenery along the way! Like the bus, there are also many train departures in a day , so it’s easy to find a time that fits your plan.

train-hue-to-da-nang

► Booking : You can go straight to the train station and buy tickets there, or book online through an agency. However, it’s recommended that you go to the station and buy a ticket since the online ticket system in Vietnam does not work very well.

► Route : the train will also go through Hai Van Pass

► Duration : a train ride will take about 3 hours, slightly less than the bus

► Cost : around 130,000VND/one way (~$6-$7)

► Pros and cons : There are usually 3 options for the seats: hard seats, soft seats, and cabins (small beds). The prices for these seats are not really different, therefore it just depends on your preference, whether you want to sit and do a little sightseeing from the window, or you want to lie down and rest before a new journey. No matter which option you choose, you can still use the common services such as toilets, steward service, snacks and air conditioning. The train can be a bit noisy sometime, but then everything else is convenient enough.

3. Travel by Limousine Van/Taxis

The most expensive but convenient choice to travel from Hue to Danang is that you take a taxi or buy a ticket for a limousine van. For taxi, many taxi companies would have a special policy for long-distance travel : they don’t charge you base on the electronic clock because that would be too expensive, instead they would give you a fixed price. Or if you want to travel on a van with more people, you can book a ticket for a limousine van.

limousine-hue-to-da-nang

► Booking : You can ask your hotel to help with booking a taxi or a van, they know which companies are the most reliable.

► Route : through Hai Van Pass

► Duration : around 1.5 hours

► Cost : The price for a limousine van ticket is actually pretty cheap, just around $8-$9/one way/per person . However, travelling by taxi would cost about $40 (but you can split the cost, so about $10 each person ).

► Pros and cons :

  • For private car, you will be picked up at your accommodation and dropped off at your desired destination , stop by any points on the way that you want to take pictures, and you can also travel with your family/friends and split the cost with them. Moreover, the travel time is significantly faster than by bus or by train. The only disadvantage is the price, but if you don’t have much time then it’s actually not too expensive.
  • For limousine vans, you will also be picked up at your registered destination and dropped off at your desired one, but you cannot stop along the way for taking photos like with taxis. However, the price is much cheaper.

4. Travel by Motorbike

motorbike-hue-to-da-nang

► Booking : You can rent a motorbike at Hue for 2-3 day. One recommended place is Hidden Lan Travel (address:  Lane 11, number 24, Ly Thuong Kiet street, Hue). If you want to be more sure, ask your hotel for more help!

► Duration : around 4-5 hours, depending on how many times you stop to take pictures

► Cost : The price for a motorbijke rental is about $10/day

► Pros and cons : Travelling by motorbike would be the optimal choice to fully experience Vietnam’s breathtaking landscape. However, travelling by motorbike is pretty dangerous if you’re not a pro. Therefore, make sure you’re in good health conditions , have some partners and a smartphone with sufficient 4G/data . Also. you might want to bring some soft drinks and food in case you get lost.

We hope to have provided you with sufficient information on how to travel from Hue to Danang . You have many options to choose from, and whichever you choose, don’t forget to take time seeing the beautiful natural scenery of Central Vietnam’s beach and forests through the way.

Hue To Da Nang: The Fastest & Cheapest Ways To Travel

If you are exploring the length of Vietnam it is likely you will need to travel from Hue to Da Nang at some stage. Da Nang is a big city in the middle of the country, and also the gateway to the tourist hot spot of Hoi An.

Whether you want to get there by plane, bus, or train I will let you know how to book, prices, and more!

If you happen to be traveling from North to South down the entirety of Vietnam then it is likely you will find yourself in Hue at some point. Hue is home to the Imperial City, which used to be the capital of the country during the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945.

Traveling south from here, your next stop is likely to be Da Nang. This is an impressive city located on the beach and a stone’s through away from Hoi An. Therefore it is likely you will be wondering how exactly to travel from Hue to Da Nang at some point in your travels.

The popular Hai Van Pass is actually located on the trip from Hue to Da Nang. This is an incredible stretch of road which has been made famous by Top Gear when it was dubbed one of the best coastal roads in the world.

So even if you aren’t a car person you will still be impressed by the incredible scenery and landscapes along the way. As a result many companies actually offer specialist transport from Hue to Da Nang so you can appreciate the beauty of the Hai Van Pass .

Ultimately this means there is a ridiculous amount of transport options to take you from Hue to Da Nang. So let’s get into figuring out all of the transport options to figure out costs, time, and what is going to be best for you!

How I Book Cheap Transport In Vietnam: 12.Go Asia

How To Get From Hue To Da Nang: All Transport Options Explained

Hue to da nang distance, hue to da nang travel time, what is the hai van pass, bus from hue to da nang, tour from hue to da nang, train from hue to da nang, fly from hue to da nang, motorbike from hue to da nang, faq’s about traveling hue to da nang.

Whether you choose to travel from Hue to Da Nang via bus, motorbike, or train the distance between the cities is approximately the same. All up it is around 100 kilometers along the coast of Vietnam .

However, you do have the option whether you do or don’t travel the Hai Van Pass. Not doing this and sticking to the main highway will cut about 10 kilometers off the total distance.

The main thing which will sway you to towards one of the options of either bus, train or motorbike will consist of budget, length of time and comfort factor.

Bus: The trip from Hue to Da Nang takes approximately 3 and 1/2 hours

Taxi/ Motorbike: It will take you approximately 2 and 1/2 hours to taxi. Though if you are going over the Hai Van Pass you may want to pull over for photos.

Train : from Hue to Da Nang takes 3 hours to complete your journey. Even though this is the longest choice it certainly is the most comfortable if you happen to book a soft sleeper so it isn’t all bad!

As I said above the Hai Van Pass is not only a famous piece of road in Vietnam but worldwide. I mean who wouldn’t want to check out what has been called the best coastal road in the world.

To be a bit more exact it is a 20-kilometer journey that joins the Da Nang to Lang Co which is located in the province of Hue. It is 500 meters above sea level making it the highest pass in all of Vietnam.

As you can imagine there are some epic views of mountains rising over the South China sea. You will also be able to see beautiful sandy beaches and steep cliffs.

It is in no way an easy drive to make in a vehicle and would not be recommended for a first-time motorbike rider. Though there are options galore if you are not comfortable driving your own motorbike.

The roads are quite curvy with even some sharp hairpin turns thrown in there.

Our first option is taking the bus from Hue to Da Nang. This is the perfect choice if you are on a tighter budget or perhaps are not a fan of train travel. This journey will take around between 3 to 3 and a half hours in total depending on how the traffic is.

As it is only a short period of time it is honestly a lot more bearable. I couldn’t stand doing the long journey in sleeper buses in Vietnam . Though for just a few hours makes it a whole lot more realistic option.

Just take it from someone who has done a lot of sleeper buses in Vietnam, choose your bus company carefully.

I have unfortunately taken a couple of really bad companies such as from Hanoi to Sapa, where I let my accommodation book my transport, rather than doing my own research.

Bus vs Tourist Bus

Now, before we get into the details of taking the bus from Hue to Da Nang, we need to talk about the difference between the types of buses available. These are either a regular bus or a tourist bus.

Your general regular bus is more to Vietnamese standards, which is fine if you know that is what you are booking. Though in all honesty in shorter journeys, such as this one, it doesn’t really matter as much.

You may find the typical Vietnamese buses to just simply be a bit painful. The lay-flat seats were not tall enough for us Westerners, they can be far from clean, and the constant stopping and starting to pick up and drop off passengers on the side of the road.

All of this combined is certainly enough to make you question your sanity.

In Vietnam, I try to book my journeys with The Sinh Tourist . Be aware there are plenty of fake websites and fake stores pretending to be this company, especially in Hanoi. However, it is easy enough to book tickets online via their website.

Their flat seats were even more comfortable being slightly longer for us tall foreigners. You do pay a premium to book with them.

Sleeper vs Seater Bus

Now the unique thing about taking a bus in Vietnam is the impressive sleeper-style buses. These buses are honestly not like any I have seen elsewhere with three rows of chairs stacked two tall.

Though you probably won’t be too bothered about them since this is such a short journey.

Just be aware that if you are tall, eg above 180cm, you may find yourself awkwardly contorting your body to fit your feet into those little boxes.

Honestly, if you are less than 165cm you should be fine in the typical sleeper-style bus, though any taller and it will be one uncomfortable journey.

At the back of the buses is a huge lay-flat area. Basically, imagine your large row on the back of the bus is converted into a huge bed. This is where they chucked the tall people on my sleeper bus journeys.

Bus Schedule From Hue To Da Nang

Below you will find the bus schedule departing Hue and arriving in Da Nang. There will be so many companies you can choose from and this list is just a selection of the best on offer.

As you can see there are quite a few options, and apart from the company name, the majority are quite similar.

They all are around the same price, though keep in mind just because a bus company is more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean the service will be good. My number one point when booking a bus company is to make sure you read reviews so you know what to expect!

How To Book Tickets

It is super easy to book bus tickets in Vietnam, including on the route from Hue to Da Nang. Personally, I recommend booking it online via Baolau or 12.Go Asia .

This is simply so you can read reviews rather than going through your accommodation or a travel agency. I had a bad experience doing the latter and would hate for you to do the same!

Anyway by booking with Baolau or 12.Go Asia you can see what other travelers have said about the journey with particular companies. Then you can just book your ticket through their website and they will email you a copy. It’s super easy!

Where Does The Bus Drop You Off

You will find that depending on which company you book your ticket from Hue to Da Nang with will affect where you are dropped off. The majority of companies will stop in the city center.

Just be aware that depending on where your accommodation is located you may need to take a taxi or walk the rest of the distance.

The Sinh Tourist: Da Nang bus stop: 16, 3 Thang 2, Thuan Phuoc, Hai Chau, Đà Nẵng

Hanh Cafe: Da Nang bus stop: 1133 Ngô Quyền, Sơn Trà, Đà Nẵng

Another popular way to travel from Hue to Da Nang is to do it by a Jeep tour. This is the perfect top-gear moment where you will ride in an army-style Jeep over the Hai Van Pass.

Depending on which tour you decide to book you will also get a chance you check out some other spots of interest along the way. This could include Marble Mountain, Lang Co Bay, Tam Giang Lagoon, visiting some local villages, and more. There are so many incredible views you will no doubt stop in to appreciate, and explore.

Prices for these generally start at $70.00 online, though you can find cheaper if you choose to book a bus tour instead of a Jeep. Also if you decide to wait until you are in Hue you will be able to find cheaper options through local travel agencies or at your hostel.

Hai Van Pass Tours:

I personally loved taking the train around Vietnam. It is way more comfortable than being squished into the Vietnamese sleeper buses and they have always been a reliable option for me.

You can also still get some epic views out the side of the train. Though unfortunately, you may not have the easiest time taking photos as the windows won’t open in the air-conditioned carriages. Also, a lot of the time the windows can be quite dirty which certainly doesn’t make for a beautiful photo.

The journey between Hue to Da Nang is relatively short though only being a few hours so is it even worth taking the train?

What Is The Regular Train Like

Before we get too into learning about taking the train from Hue to Da Nang you need to know there are two different types of trains you can book. These two options are either the regular train or a luxury train.

The regular train is operated by Vietnam Railways. This is where you will find the majority of more affordable tickets. They have the option of hard or soft sleeper berths, as well as hard or soft seats. Currently, they operate this journey multiple times per day, with the SE3, SE19, SE1, SE7, SE5, and SE9 trains. Though they all depart at a different time so make sure to research which will be best for you.

I have used the standard trains operated by Vietnam Railways throughout the country and honestly have not had any issues. Though I certainly have heard of some horror stories *bugs*. Fortunately, I have been lucky enough to avoid this on my train travels in Vietnam.

On longer journeys, you are best to book the 4-berth soft sleeper cabin over a 6-berth hard sleeper. This is simply because the 4-berths are a lot more comfortable with more headroom, privacy, and thicker mattresses. Though since the route from Hue to Da Nang is relatively short being just a few hours you may actually want to book a seat.

What Is The Luxury Train Like

In contrast, the luxury train is a lot nicer than the regular train. There are a few options you have when booking a luxury train from Hue to Da Nang. These are either Livitrans, Lotus Trains, or Viollet Express. The main difference between a luxury train and the regular ones are the amenities and facilities you are provided with onboard.

These trains are not actually their own individual trains. They actually operate on the Vietnam Railways Trains. Though what they have done is decked out a few of the carriages on board and increase the amenities you are provided for a more comfortable journey.

You will find that your cabin is a lot nicer onboard with proper pillows, snacks, and free Wifi. At larger train stations you will have access to a lounge with your luxury train ticket. Though unfortunately, the station in Hue does not offer this.

Of course, it costs a little more than the regular train. Though the exact price difference depends on the operator you decide to book with.

Train Schedule From Hue To Da Nang

The below is the train schedule that departs in Hue and arrives in Da Nang. The routes are quite affordable, though be aware it is priced from, which means this is the price for seats. Obviously, the sleeper berths cost more.

How To Book Tickets From Hue To Da Nang

It is super easy to buy your tickets for the train nowadays. Whether you decide to buy them in person or purchase online, Vietnam Railways accepts both types. I love using e-tickets as it prevents the common stress of freaking out wondering where you can print that ticket you just purchased online.

Though before I tell you how to buy tickets, you need to decide what type of ticket to purchase. All of the trains operated by Vietnam Railways offer a variety of cabin choices so you can pick the perfect option for you:

SE5: Onboard you will find air-conditioned 4 berth soft sleepers, air-conditioned 6 berth hard sleepers, air-conditioned soft seats, air-conditioned hard seats, and ordinary seats.

SE7: This train only runs at busy times such as Tet. Onboard you can find air-conditioned soft sleepers, air-conditioned hard sleepers, and air-conditioned soft seats.

SE1, and SE3: These are the best trains with air-conditioned 4 berth soft sleepers, air-conditioned 6 berth hard sleepers, and air-conditioned soft seats. SE3 was refurbished in 2015 and SE1 was refurbished in 2016. You will also find these trains offer privately run luxury sleeper beds by companies such as Livitrans and Violette.

SE19: Onboard you will find air-conditioned soft sleepers, air-conditioned hard sleepers, air-conditioned soft seats, air-conditioned hard seats, and ordinary hard seats.

Buy Tickets From Vietnam Railways

Another option is buying your tickets directly at Vietnam Railways . You often can’t find the cheaper hard/soft seater tickets available on third-party websites as they are not a popular choice for travelers.

So, if you are on a budget you can book directly with Vietnam Railways. You will find the tickets are slightly cheaper when you purchase directly.

Buy Tickets Online

You can purchase tickets online. It is a bit confusing as some websites still say you need to print out to ticket and swap it with a proper one at the train station. Though no one wants to do this!

I ended up booking with Baolau . Their website said I didn’t need to print off my ticket and instead just showed my ticket on my phone to the attendant on the train. This is what I did and didn’t have any issues with.

What Berth To Book

There is a variety of seating or berths you can book on the trains. Be aware that even though you may book the same class twice it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the same. Quite a few trains have been refurbished in recent years making them a lot more comfortable.

Hard Sleeper Or Soft Sleeper: The majority of travelers will choose a soft sleeper when taking long journeys in Vietnam. This is definitely the most comfortable way to travel. Also, it is the safest with a smaller amount of people around you.

The only difference between the hard sleeper and soft sleeper berths is the number of people you will be sharing with. A hard sleeper sleeps 6 people whereas a soft sleeper sleeps, 4 people.

So contrary to the name you won’t be sleeping on a hard surface. You will just have less headroom if you want to sit upright.

Lower or Upper Berth: The appeal of the lower berth is simply that it is a lot easier to get into. There is no climbing an awkward ladder, trying not to fall off while the train moves. The lower ones are also generally slightly bigger as they are permanent fixtures.

The upper berth is a lot more private! Just be aware you may also have the air conditioning blowing straight onto you so bring an extra jacket on board to keep warm!

Hard Seat Or Soft Seat: The seats are the cheapest you will find, with a hard seat being one of the cheapest options available. This is good for shorter journeys, though I would think twice before booking one for the long journey such as between Hanoi and Hue .

Top tip: If you book your train via Baolau you can pick in advance whether you want a lower or upper berth.

My Experience Taking The Train From Hue To Da Nang

For our second train journey in Vietnam, we would be traveling from Hue to Da Nang. It is an easy 2-and-a-half-hour or so train journey, and supposedly with some epic views along the way. Our train would depart at 10.59 a.m. and arrive at 1.37 p.m.

This is the SE1 train, one which was recently refurbished so we were excited to have a look inside.

We decided to book a soft sleeper for the journey. Tickets were not that expensive and we quite enjoyed the privacy of only having to share a berth with a couple of other people.

The train station in Hue was only a 15-minute walk away from our accommodation. So under the heat of the morning sun, we made our way there with backpacks on our backs.

Soon enough we found our way and sat in the main area with other travelers, both foreign and domestic, as we waited for the train to arrive.

The doors opened when the train was nearby, indicating we could now go and wait by the tracks. On the ground were markings where you expect the different carriages to arrive.

We walked down past the food vendors to where our berth was meant to arrive. Shortly afterward the train pulls in and we wait for people to get out before entering the carriage and finding our cabin.

Now this train travels from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh, right down the length of the country. This means the cabins and only cleaned at the start and end.

Between this is a continuous rolling of passengers, so when hopping on halfway it is common that you may find your bed has already been slept in. Luckily, we were not too worried about this as it was only a couple of hour’s journey, so we didn’t plan to sleep.

Soon enough the train begins making its way down the track again. Unfortunately, I notice the windows are quite dirty. So much for the epic coastal views, I have planned to photograph along the way. The first couple of hours or so is quite uneventful as we make our way past small towns and through cities.

Once we make it to the ocean cliffs, the views truly do get epic. It is a bit of an overcast and cloudy day, but I imagine when the sun is shining the beaches would be glistening and the water would be beautifully blue.

From here it isn’t too long until we arrive in the city of Da Nang. Though this isn’t my final stop of the day. Instead, I would need to then travel from Da Nang to Hoi An . A beautiful, and very tourist town, which is famous for its old quarter.

Hue Train Station

The train station in Hue is within walking distance of the main town. It is located on Bui Thi Xuan Street, only about 1 km from the city center.

For us, it took maybe another 20 minutes to walk from our accommodation past all the busy streets and the hospital.

The train station here is pretty small. Though I guess that just means you cannot get lost. There will also be plenty of taxis waiting around if you need a ride and if you do not need one you will get plenty of offers anyway.

Da Nang Train Station

Da Nang Train Station is again, smack bang in the middle of the city. It is a pretty small train station as well, meaning it is nearly impossible to get lost. There will also be plenty of taxis waiting around if you need a ride and if you do not need one you will get plenty of offers anyway.

You will find it along Hai Phong Street, nestled deep within the city life of Da Nang.

There are plenty of accommodation options near the train station which means if you are taking an early or late trip you won’t be far away. We stayed in a cute little hostel which was about a 10-minute walk away.

If you don’t want to travel overland, then you could look at taking a flight from Hue To Da Nang. Unfortunately, you will find there are no direct flights from Hue Airport to Da Nang Airport.

This means you will need to take two separate flights from Hue To Da Nang. These will be to either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh , where you will then need to take another flight to Da Nang.

Luckily Vietnam has plenty of budget airlines. Seriously flights can be found for as little as $30.00. There are also around 7 flights daily from Hue to Hanoi and then from Hanoi to Da Nang, so you will be spoilt for choice.

Just remember you generally need to book flights further out to get a good price. This means less flexibility in your travels as you will through your entire itinerary off if you spend a few extra days somewhere. Vietjet Air is the cheapest and most suitable airline operating this route.

Depending on how long your wait is between flights you may find it a quicker, and a lot more affordable option, to take the train or bus.

Flights can be booked at 12.Go Asia or over on Skyscanner.

flying from hue to da nang

Renting a motorbike is another great choice for traveling from Hue to Da Nang. This will allow you to check out the Hai Van Pass at your own pace.

There are plenty of places to rent a motorbike from in Hue so you will have no problem finding a shop. Just make sure to do your research and use a well-rated company. You can expect the rental to cost around $10.00 per day.

Ideally, you will want to find a company that has stores in both locations so you don’t need to worry about bringing the motorbike back, as that will essentially defeat the whole purpose. Though this is a common thing to do in Hue and Da Nang so you shouldn’t have any issues.

Just be aware there are certain requirements to legally ride a motorbike in Vietnam. This means that if you are pulled over by the police and you do not provide the correct documents they will no doubt ask you for a decent bribe.

Also, it is very likely your travel insurance won’t cover you since you aren’t legally allowed to ride there. This means if you get in an accident or damage the motorbike, they won’t pay.

So what exactly do you need to legally ride a motorbike in Vietnam? This is an International Drivers Permit with a motorbike endorsement. In saying this 99% of travelers riding in Vietnam do not have this and instead just bribe officials if they are pulled over.

How many days to spend in Da Nang? Depending on what you plan to do in Da Nang will affect how long you want to spend there. Personally, I would stay 2 full days in the main city of Da Nang, but then do another 4 or so days in the nearby city of Hoi An.

How far in advance do I need to book tickets? It is recommended you book tickets in advance to ensure you can travel with a reputable, clean, and safe company. You should try for at least a week in advance to be safe. Though if you are not worried about this then you can probably just book the day before.

Booking through Baolau or 12.Go Asia is perfect for those busy periods as you can book when you haven’t even arrived in the country yet! This means you can relax knowing all the planning is taken care of.

This advice isn’t valid during the high season between November to January, weekends, and especially on the Vietnamese New Year (Tet). During these times you will want to book at least 4 weeks in advance and expect a very full bus, train, or flight.

Hello, how easy is it to get taxis or Grab etc between the main tombs?

So I'm thinking of using taxis to go between the three main tombs that I'm interested in.

Then going to get a scenic transfer (via the pass) to Da Nang hotel.

So, are taxis and Grab readily available at the main tombs?

Any rough idea of prices? Say Minh Mang to Khai Dinh for example.

There is a thread from last year

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293926-i10089-k14219835-Taxi_or_Grab_to_Between_Royal_Tombs_in_Hue-Hue_Thua_Thien_Hue_Province.html

Taxi Sanh (has EVs) which started in Hue last year advertised a 4 hour trip to those three tombs for 550 000vnd.

Thanks Rayza, that was very useful.

Get a driver for the day. The tombs are out in the countryside, and there is not a lot of incentive for a taxi to venture all the way out there, when they could turn more rides centrally. Plus, most either hire a driver, or are doing a package tour, so not a lot of business there either.

Had my accommodation arrange a motorbike hire for the full day, and did much more than just the tombs. It cost about 650K for about 8 hours.

I just got contacted by the driver, and my original plan is back on again.

2m VND, which seems pretty cheap IMO.

So looks like I won't be needing taxi trips afterall, but it was good to get the info from you two about hiring a taxi for half a day.

I would keep it to 2 tombs. Ming Mong was a favorite, and you should take your time as the grounds are fairly large. Khai Dinh is impressive, but a much smaller complex. They pair well with each other as they are in close proximity, and offer a good contrast in terms of aesthetics and setting. It speaks well to the timeline of the history of the dynasty.

Lap An is a fairly simple detour on the way to Da Nang .

Have a good trip!
