Carnival Liberty Dining Venues and Cuisine

carnival cruise liberty food

The Carnival Liberty is a large cruise ship owned by Carnival Cruise Lines sailing 3 to 4-day cruises to the Bahamas. The ship carries over 3000 guests and was launched in 2005.

The Carnival Liberty was the first Carnival ship to undergo the $500 million fleet-wide Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements. Changes included the addition of some great new casual dining venues.

There are at least a dozen places to dine on the Carnival Liberty , each offering a variety of cuisines. Except as noted below, all are included in the base cruise fare.

Golden Olympian Dining Room

Silver olympian dining room.

  • Lido Restaurant (Mongolian Wok, Chef’s Choice, Salad Bar, Carnival Deli, and more)

Blue Iguana Cantina

Seafood shack, guy's burger joint.

  • The Steakhouse (fixed surcharge of $20 per adult)

Ol' Fashioned Barbecue

In addition to these dining venues, the Carnival Liberty also has a special Chef's Table dinner with an extra surcharge. This dinner starts with hors-d'oeuvres in the gallery, followed by dinner designed by Carnival's master chefs in either one of the dining rooms or in an intimate, quiet room on the ship like the library. These dinners are limited to 14 persons.

The Carnival Liberty also has 24-hour complimentary room service.

The Golden Olympian is one of the two main dining rooms on the Carnival Liberty. This dining room is located midship on decks 3 and 4 and is used for Carnival's "Your Time Dining." If you select this dining option when booking, you can dine any time you choose between 5:45 and 9:30 p.m. You can meet and dine with the same group or eat with different people each evening.

The Golden Olympian and Silver Olympian Dining Rooms serve the same menus each evening. Guests also enjoy the same entertainment from the waiters and other dining staff. It's all fun, but in a nice environment, with good service and a very good selection of dishes.

The Silver Olympian Dining Room is the largest dining venue on the Carnival Liberty. This room is located aft on decks 3 and 4 and offers the same menu as the Golden Olympian.

The Silver Olympian Dining Room is used for traditional fixed seating at two times each evening—6 p.m or 8:15 p.m. You will need to choose which type of dinner seating you wish when you book the cabins—either fixed in this dining room or open seating in the Golden Olympian Dining Room.

Lido Restaurant

The Lido Restaurant features a variety of casual dining options such as Mongolian Wok, Chef’s Choice, Salad Bar, Carnival Deli, and more.

With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, plus food options for everyone, you can enjoy your personal favorites in the company of family and friends for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's kind of like an upscale food court.

You'll also find pizza, soft serve ice cream, and frozen yogurt. The Lido Restaurant is open 24 hours a day.

Most everyone likes Mexican food. The Blue Iguana Cantina, outdoors on the Lido deck next to the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar, serves up some delicious burritos and tacos. There are three meat selections and a large variety of things to add such as cheese, rice, and beans. Nearby is a large salsa bar with a great selection ranging from mild to spicy.

Casual seafood is the order of the day at the Seafood Shack. Whether it’s on a roll or arranged on a platter, you'll enjoy the seafood. The vibe is a New-England-style seaside spot where you enjoy a tasty meal complete with ocean view.

Guy's Burger Joint was added to the Carnival Liberty as part of the Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements and has been a big hit.

Carnival partnered with Food Network celebrity chef Guy Fieri to develop the concept for the casual eatery. The burgers are delicious, and there's a nice "fixins" bar where you can add a wide variety of toppings and condiments to your burger.

Guy's Burger Joint is a perfect spot for a late lunch if you've been ashore. The burger stand is located outdoors next to the Lido pool. Seating is available outside or indoors.

Steakhouse Restaurant

The elegantly decorated Steakhouse has a fixed extra surcharge. Located in a quiet spot midship on deck 10, The Steakhouse is perfect for a romantic dinner or a special occasion. The meal includes an appetizer, salad, entrée, side, and dessert. Reservations are required.

As expected, the menu is filled with delectable cuts of prime beef, along with lamb, chicken, fish, and seafood items. The surf & turf combination of a filet and lobster tail is one of the most popular items. The portion sizes are much larger than you would expect so be sure and go to dinner with an appetite.

Enjoy a traditional barbecue lunch made the old-fashioned way. They stick to classics such as braised pork butt, smoked beef, and dry-rubbed grilled chicken. Sides include mac and cheese, molasses baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. Finish the dish with your choice of sauce.

During my recent trip aboard Carnival Liberty, I found some amazing dishes and dining destinations I wanted to share with you. Not surprisingly cruise travelers are often distracted by the multitude of dining choices and activities. They often miss some of the best options, simply by having too good of a time or just not being aware. It is my hope that with my keen sense of “food goodness” and tireless research that I can help set you on the right path during your next cruise aboard Carnival Liberty.

Guy's Burger Joint Burger

Guy’s Burger Joint – For one of the best burger’s at sea, you will need to try Guy’s Burger Joint. Carnival Liberty was the first ship to get a Guy Fieri created Guy’s Burger Joint back in 2011. It offers Cruise Addicts some amazing hot off the grill burgers and hand-cut fries. Located on Deck Nine right off the pool and opened from Noon-6pm most days. You’ll also find a large selection of toppings at the toppings bar. To get ready for your cruise, be sure to read the menu ( Guys Burger Joint Menu pdf )  before boarding. If your wondering, what a pig patty is? Its a patty made out of bacon slices layered together on top of a regular burger. Before this cruise I kept hearing how great these burgers’s were and it sounded very hyped. Well, It’s not and this may become your favorite place. Just be aware of the hours as you don’t want to miss out. Located on Lido Deck, 9 Fwd. Open from Noon till 6pm.

Tip: Don’t forget to visit the toppings bar to make your burger extra special, it has so many choices you may order a plain burger and build your own masterpiece.

A video posted by John Shallo (@cruiseaddicts) on Mar 18, 2015 at 10:44am PDT

Mongolian Wok – While onboard Carnival Liberty, the Mongolian Wok became one of my favorite places. Try visiting on port days or other non-peak times as its very popular. How does it work? First, select your noodles and veggies. Then tell the chef which sauce and meat you want in the wok. Will it be mussels and Szechuan? Beef and Thai barbecue? Chicken and black bean? The choices and combinations are endless. Some guests even combine the sauces or ask just for Soy Sauce. If you love Asian food and like fresh hot off the grill food, it doesn’t get much better than this. – Located on Deck 9 Aft at the Mongolian Grill. Open Noon till 2:30pm.

Tip: Pick any combinations of meat and even sauces. One sauce suggestion, ask for the Thai Barbecue with a touch of the Szechuan sauce for a great combination of flavors.

Taco's from the BlueIguana Cantina aboard Carnival Liberty

BlueIguana Cantina – Not only is the Blue Iguana Cantina food good, but it may become your new go to place for Breakfast and Lunch when onboard your next Carnival cruise. With fresh made tortilla’s they offer Arepa’s, Huevo Ranchero’s and Breakfast Burrito’s for breakfast. For Lunch, you can have made to order Taco’s with Chicken, Beef and Fish or Burrito’s with Chicken, Shrimp or Pork. You then have a wide assortment of toppings, sauces and even fresh sliced watermelon to cool you off. I loved trying the Habenero Salsa, it was so flavorful and packs a real punch. Be sure to study the ( BlueIguana Cantina Menu pdf ) menu before your cruise. You’ll love all the fresh and flavorful offerings. I found myself not visiting the buffet for Lunch or Breakfast like in the past but, coming here. We even visited before getting off the ship before debarkation. It’s that good. Located on Lido Deck 9 Fwd. Times may vary but, normally open from 7:30am till 10:30am for Breakfast and Noon till 2:30pm for Lunch.

Tip: Build your Burrito’s or Taco’s your way because you may want to have lighter options or not as spicy. You can go all vegetables on a whole wheat burrito or any other combination you desire. Your in control, look at the menu link above to pick your favorite combo’s before you sail way.

Prosciutto Pizza aboard Carnival Liberty

Pizza Pirate – Carnival Cruise Line’s has improved their pizza so much in recent years, I wanted to be sure to list it here. I noticed the change last year aboard Carnival Sunshine and it was equally good aboard the Carnival Liberty. You’ll also notice your fellow cruisers love the pizza as well , because it can get really busy at peak times. The crew who work’s here always had a smile and work consistently to put out a great pizza as fast as possible. If they don’t have what you want ready for a quick takeaway, simply order it and they will call you over when its ready.

Here is the Pizza Pirate Menu:

Margherita Pomodoro | Basil | Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella

Funghi Pomodoro | Mushroom | Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella

Pepperoni Pomodoro | Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella

Quattro Formaggi Roasted Garlic | Gorgonzola | Provolone | Parmesan | Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella

Prosciutto Roasted Garlic | Rucola | Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella

Caesar salad is also available with your Pizza. They are located in Emile’s on Deck 9 Aft, Open 24 hours a day.

Diamonds Steak House aboard Carnival Liberty

Diamonds Steak House – If your looking for a wonderfully delicious experience, I highly recommend you visit Diamonds Steak House. It will be the culinary highlight of your cruise . Diamond’s is a specialty restaurant that features premium cuts of beef cooked to your exact specifications, as well as a fantastic selection of seafood, gourmet appetizers and an extensive wine list. The appetizers and gourmet side dishes amazing all by themselves. The extensive menu will make your mouth water, so take a look at it today to and reserve your table before boarding – Diamonds Steakhouse Menu (PDF). Leave room for desert, because they are truly the grand finale of an amazing culinary experience.

I recommend this for adult couples looking for a romantic dinner together or culinary adventurous families who want to get dressed up and have a night to remember. A meal like this would cost you easily double for more at a comparable big city restaurant. So make your cruise extra special and experience fine dining at it’s best. The menu choices have been updated and really excited the foodies at our table. Bon appétit!

Diamonds Steak House is located on Deck 10, Midship. Reservations are required and costs $35 each for Adults and Kids.

Tip: You can often get a complimentary bottle of wine for booking this specialty restaurant your first night of the cruise. Be sure to check once onboard.

Carnival cruise food: The ultimate guide to restaurants and dining on board

Lifestyle

On a Carnival cruise, food is always one of the highlights. From Guy Fieri burgers to fancy steaks at Fahrenheit 555, you'll find endless options to satisfy your hunger in a highly enjoyable fashion. In fact, there's often more to eat and explore than you could possibly have time for in a single sailing.

If you're planning your next cruise and want to know which Carnival restaurants to expect on board, you've come to the right place. While certain dining venues remain a standard across all ships — like the much-loved Lido Deck buffet — the options keep expanding with every new ship launch. Plus, older ships are constantly being refurbished and updated with new restaurants. That's why we put together this comprehensive list of Carnival cruise restaurants and where you can find them.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Consider this your ultimate guide to Carnival cruise food, with details about every restaurant in the fleet, as well as answers to the most commonly asked questions about dining on a Carnival cruise ship.

Carnival restaurants available fleetwide

Coffee bar or javablue cafe.

A la carte pricing; snacks

Black coffee and tea are free at the buffet and in the main dining room, but you'll want to come here for specialty coffee drinks like espresso or cold brew. You can also purchase milkshakes and baked goods when you need an extra pick-me-up (or grab free Danish pastries and croissants in the morning).

Dining room

carnival cruise liberty food

Included; breakfast and dinner

The main dining room serves a sit-down breakfast and the nightly three-course dinner that's included in your cruise fare. Even better, Carnival's chief culinary officer, Emeril Lagasse, is now behind many of the dining room's new menu items. On Carnival, the main dining room comes with less pretense than on many other cruise lines. In fact, it's not uncommon for your servers to break out in song and dance by the end of the night.

Don't miss other special dining experiences like the complimentary Seaday Brunch menu or the family-friendly Dr. Seuss-themed breakfast for an additional fee ($10 to $15 per adult; $8 to $10 per child), which includes meet-and-greets with characters.

Lido Marketplace

Included; breakfast, lunch and dinner

Carnival's buffet on the Lido Deck has all the staple stations to keep you fed from morning until night. Try the deli counter, barbecue spot, pasta bar or Asian noodle station. Don't miss the always-essential salad bar or pizza station. Finish up with soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt or an enormous cake slice and other goodies from the dessert station.

Included; snacks

No cruise experience is complete without on-demand soft serve. Open on the Lido Deck until midnight, the Swirls station serves up frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream in the classic flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, or you can enjoy your own combo swirl. The best part is it's self-serve, so no one can judge you for how often you come back for another cone.

The Chef's Table

Fixed price; dinner

This exclusive multicourse dining experience hosted by the ship's master executive chef takes place in untraditional spaces like the galley or library to give you a behind-the-scenes VIP feel. (Some newer ships even have a dedicated Chef's Table dining room with a window into the galley.) You'll be part of a group of only 14 to 16 guests, and the evening kicks off with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a tour of the galley. The dinner menu itself changes based on what's in season or local to the port, but it always includes wine pairings and, of course, dessert.

24-hour room service

carnival cruise liberty food

A la carte; all-day dining

When hunger calls at odd hours of the night or you're craving a meal from the comfort of your balcony, you can access 24-hour room service on your Carnival cruise ship. Just pick up your cabin's phone and place your order. While room service is generally only available for a cost, Carnival does offer free continental breakfast delivery to your room from 6 to 10 a.m.

Pizza delivery

Fixed price; all-day dining

You can order pizza on the Carnival Hub app to wherever you are on the ship, any time of day, for a delivery fee of $5 per pie. Pro tip: Take a picture of yourself showing where you're located on board to help the pizza delivery staff find you.

Pizzeria del Capitano or Pizza Pirate

Included; lunch and dinner

The all-day pizza station is going to be your go-to option when you get back from a day at port and the lunch buffet is already closed or when you're hungry after a late night of partying. Choose from five prepared pizza options, ranging from classics like margherita and pepperoni to other delicious Italian favorites like funghi and prosciutto. Order a slice or get a whole pie delivered through the Carnival Hub app.

Carnival cruise food: Frequently asked questions

carnival cruise liberty food

How do seating times work in the main dining room?

Before sailing, you must choose your preferred dining format for the main dining room — either set dining times with assigned seating or a flexible option called Your Time Dining with open seating. If you prefer a preset dining time and a guaranteed table with the same server every night, you can choose early dining at 5:30 p.m. or late dining at 7:45 p.m.

With Your Time Dining, you can go to the main dining room anytime between 5:15 p.m. and 9 p.m. to be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Just alert the dining room that you're coming on the Carnival Hub app so your table will be ready sooner. You can request a specific waiter, but more likely, you'll sit at a different table with a new waiter each evening. You might have to wait for a table at peak dinner times, but Carnival says the average wait time is usually less than 20 minutes, depending on your party size.

Either way, there's no need to make a reservation for the main dining room.

Do you need reservations for specialty dining restaurants?

Reservations are highly recommended for specialty restaurants, as these locations can book up in advance. You can make reservations online up to 48 hours before your cruise by visiting the "Manage My Booking/Cruise Manager" section of Carnival.com, at which time you'll also pay the cover charge for the restaurant.

Once you get on board, look for staff set up at booths to help you make specialty dining reservations. You can also call or visit the restaurant yourself to make a reservation, but seating times might be limited. Walk-ins are allowed but will get seated based on availability. If you don't make a reservation, be prepared for a wait or the possibility of being turned away if the restaurant is booked.

Can you enjoy unlimited food on your Carnival cruise?

It depends on where you eat! There are no limits on most of the included food options, and you can pretty much find free food on your cruise from the crack of dawn to late into the night. You can always eat as much as you want at the buffet in Lido Marketplace and other included food stations across the ship during their operating hours. In the main dining room, however, guests are limited to two free entrees (which, let's be honest, is still plenty!) before having to pay for additional entrees.

Is there a fee for room service?

Room service isn't free on Carnival anymore, except during breakfast. Instead, menu items are available to order a la carte. Complimentary continental breakfast can be delivered to your room between the hours of 6 and 10 a.m. For more details, check out our complete cruise ship room service guide .

Are kids menus available?

Most dining venues offer kids menus with plenty of safe options for picky eaters (think: chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti and meatballs). If you're dining at one of the specialty restaurants with a cover charge, there's a reduced fee for kids under 11.

Does Carnival still offer a Lobster Night?

Lobster is available for dinner nightly in the main dining room for a surcharge, but on cruise sailings of six nights or longer, Carnival offers one night per sailing (typically one of the formal nights) where a lobster tail is included as a complimentary entree option on the three-course menu. But don't expect to scarf down all the lobster you can eat. In line with Carnival's two-entree limit in the main dining room, guests now have to pay for any additional lobster past the first two entrees.

Dining on Carnival Liberty

carnival cruise ship

Carnival Liberty

Carnival Liberty, the first ship to undergo the Funship 2.0 transformation, has many dining options – most of them free.  The only regular mealtime eatery on the ship that costs extra is the steakhouse.

cruise ship waiters singing and dancing

Entertainment provided by the waitstaff in the Golden Olympian Dining Room

Liberty has two main dining rooms, the Gold Olympian and the Silver Olympian.  Passengers can still choose specific dining times where they have the same table at the same seating each night.  This option works for folks who like the traditional dinner time seating and the chance to make new friends that they see daily at dinner.

cruise food

Lobster and Shrimp

The downstairs level of the Gold Dining Room offers the newer “your time” dining.  Passengers choosing this option can come any time during the dinner service and will not necessarily be seated at the same table every time.  A great new option for those who like to keep their schedule open so they can eat at whatever time they find convenient that day.

Carnival cruise chocolate melting cake

Carnival’s signature dessert – Chocolate Melting Cake

Both dining rooms serve the same dinner menu.  The silver dining room also serves breakfast, lunch, and on sea days Carnival’s best kept secret – afternoon tea.  We found some of the best goodies of our whole cruise at the afternoon tea.

Dinner menus change daily, although they do offer Carnival’s signature Chocolate Melting Cake as a dessert option each night.  Every cruise has at least one formal night where lobster will likely make an appearance on the menu.  We found the staff quite friendly and attentive.

cruise ship food

Mongolian Wok

The Lido deck offers many other dining options for passengers.  It has Emilio’s buffet, a deli, Mongolian wok, pizza, and ethnic places serving things like Asian or Italian food.  There’s also a fish and chips place upstairs and late night hot dogs or sandwiches near the aft Lido pool.  If that’s not enough they have 24 hour room service and the aft self-serve soft ice cream station on the Lido deck stays open round the clock.

Carnival Liberty Italian Food

At Diner, the Lido Deck has a free Italian Restaurant

Since the Liberty has the Funship 2.0 additions, the Lido deck also is home to Guy’s Burger Joint and the Blue Iguana Cantina.

Food on Carnival Liberty

Breakfast at the Blue Iguana Cantina

The Blue Iguana serves tasty breakfast burritos as well as lunch and dinner with delicious taco and burrito selections.  Passengers can customize with quite a variety of choices to put in their taco or burrito.  It had a salsa bar nearby with all sorts of toppings to add to the burritos or tacos.  We loved the Blue Iguana Cantina.

Carnival Liberty Lido Deck Food

Guy’s Burger Joint

We found the Blue Iguana’s willingness to give people whatever they want quite the opposite of Guy’s Burger Joint where they live up to their motto – Have it Guy’s way, NOT your way .  We sailed on the Liberty on one of its first cruises after the 2.0 transformation and already other passengers had requested Guy’s serve other burger options for people who don’t eat beef.  Being non-beef eaters, we did not get to try Guy’s.

I used to enjoy watching Guy Fieri’s TV show, Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.   Ever since our trip on the Liberty, if Triple D comes on we say “Oh THAT Guy,” and change the channel.  I sincerely hope he has listened to the passengers and started offering people the opportunity to sub the beef patty for a turkey or veggie patty by now.   We will find out soon on our upcoming voyage on Carnival’s brand new Breeze.  If Guy’s has options other than beef I may even watch Diners, Drive Ins and Dives again.  I did used to like that show.  On one episode Guy ate a turkey burger and LIKED it….so why didn’t his menu include them on the ship????

Down on one of the lower decks, Carnival Liberty has a sushi bar.  People tend to walk by thinking it costs extra, but it doesn’t.  The sushi is there for the asking.  It is just open for a short time each evening so sushi lovers need to make sure and get there at the right time to get some.

What happened to Carnival's Chocolate Buffet?

mmmm, Chocolate

One thing we always look forward to each cruise is the late-night chocolate or dessert buffet.  When we sailed on the Spirit quite some time ago, Carnival had them too.  It turns out they quit having the late night dessert buffets a couple years ago to save on waste.  They have new desserts each day on the Lido rather than serving things left from the previous night like some other ships.

They do still have a chocolate buffet of sorts, during lunchtime on the Lido one day out of the cruise.  They call it a chocolate extravaganza now.  It’s not a whole deck full of chocolate, just one station, but still enough chocolate choices to make an entire meal of dessert.

Passengers on special diets, such as gluten free, can meet with the maitre’d on the day they board the ship to insure their meals meet their dietary needs.

You can never go wrong with that Chocolate Melting Cake,,,, hmmm hmmm good! Oh and Carnival has some of the best Fish n Chips I have ever tasted! …

' src=

I always look forward to the lobster and eggs benedict because cruises are the only places I ever get to eat those things. Next cruise I’m going to try Guy’s even if it means I have to get the pig patty, which being all bacon sounds like it must have about a million calories. (OK possibly slight exaggeration on the calorie count there.)

I can’t wait to try all of the great food on the Carnival Breeze. While aboard I will be doing lots of food and wine reviews for http://www.MyTravelTastes.com Be sure to visit the site next month for updates!

Very impressive restaurants. Great looking and I’ll bet the food is delicious. Would be fun to go on a cruise some day and try all the restaurants, even Guy’s Burger Joint….I wonder what burgers their way taste like?!

' src=

Unlike Mom I do love a good burger but was dissapointed with Guy’s burgers. They were very salty. I only had the burger once. The Blue Iguana burrito place was great though.

Today’s Bonus Cruising Tip

I ALWAYS buy travel insurance (especially during these uncertain times) to cover my cruises, but I NEVER purchase it through Carnival . It costs more and usually covers less than policies you purchase on your own. I go through sites like  travelinsurance.com  to compare plans and prices and get the best deal for the coverage I want. Spend less on insurance and spend more on excursions, special onboard cruise experiences and…future cruises!

Thanks for the updated menu. Hoping that Escargot is still available on night 3 like the menus show. Recent menus on the Celebration do not have Escargot available at all on any day.

' src=

Thanks for the heads up about the Escargot on the Celebration, James. I’m reaching out to my contact at Carnival to see if I can get some clarification on that – if it’s due to a shortage (which has happened before), a ship specific change, or a fleet-wide change to the menu. I’ll share anything I find!

5 Best Carnival Liberty Cruise Tips

carnival cruise liberty food

The first vessel to undergo Carnival's now-ubiquitous Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades, Carnival Liberty is just that -- a fun ship. Featuring dueling pool deck watering holes, free burgers and burritos, a sports bar, a candy store, excellent family offerings and comedy shows, Carnival Liberty is as relaxing or as lively as you want it to be. Read on for our list of Carnival Liberty cruise tips.

Tip 1: Try All Five Burgers at Guy's -- Just Not in One Sitting

Guy's Burger Joint, found on the pool deck and backed by Food Network personality Guy Fieri, serves up delightful greasiness with a side of free burgers and fries. With names like The Ringer (a cheeseburger with an onion ring and "Donkey Sauce") and Chillius Maximus (all of the above, plus lettuce, tomato and chili), tons of acronyms like S.M.C. (super melty cheese) and L.T.O.P. (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles), and a head-spinning number of condiments, the menu can be overwhelming, making it difficult to decide which of the five standard menu burgers to try. The short answer: Try them all! But be warned that eating more than two in a sitting isn't advisable -- unless you'd like to spend the rest of the day in your cabin in the fetal position.

Tip 2: Get Creative with Your Drinks

If you've ever had the urge to create your very own signature cocktail, Carnival Liberty's Alchemy Bar is the place to play mixologist. This bar, centrally located near the nightclub on the Promenade Deck, allows you to create your own concoctions using "prescription" pads. It also has a list of pre-created (and delicious) cocktails meant to help you deal with various "ailments." Don't know what to try? Ask the bartenders, who are dressed in white lab coats to mimic old-timey pharmacists. They'll fix you right up.

Tip 3: Have a Burrito for Breakfast

If you want something different for your morning meal and don't want to wait in a long line at the buffet, be sure to stop by the BlueIguana Cantina to try a burrito for breakfast. The poolside taqueria is open early -- from 7 a.m. on port days and 7:30 a.m. on sea days -- and serves breakfast burritos and arepas. The best part: They're free.

Tip 4: Catch a Flick at the Seaside Theater

Shockingly, the Seaside Theater, which towers over the ship's main pool, rarely draws a crowd, particularly after the sun goes down. It shows everything from photos of you and your fellow cruisers to concerts, sporting events and movies. If you're looking for a spot to relax, pull up a deck chair and enjoy. Bonus: Free popcorn is offered when the theater shows its "Dive-In Movies."

Carnival Liberty Cabin Reviews

Tip 5: Invest in a Disco Ball

If you want a drink in a souvenir container that won't break on your flight home, try one of the kitschy disco ball cups. They're a bit expensive (basically the equivalent of two drinks), but the price includes the ball, a reusable straw and a reusable inner plastic cup and lid to house your beverage, which is also included in the price. Even if you don't always use the disco ball, the plastic cup, lid and straw are great for grabbing to-go beverages from the buffet throughout the rest of your sailing. If you plan on splurging, buy your drink early to get the most use out of the cup on your cruise.

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

The 18-story ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island when the as-yet-unidentified man jumped off one of the decks.

According to onlookers, his father and brother watched helplessly as he leaped over the side.

Some passengers said it appeared to be an impulsive, spur-of-the-moment decision.

Liberty of the Seas

“I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30,” passenger Bryan Sims tells The Post. ” It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims continues.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.” “When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” another passenger,  Deborah Morrison, told The Post.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

“It was insane,” says Sims. “It was just surreal.”

In a statement to The Post, Royal Caribbean said its crew immediately sprang into action following the incident.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” the statement reads.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

News of the apparent suicide attempt quickly spread among the guests — and many of them tried to help in any way they could.

Decks of Liberty of the Seas

“The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” said Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” Fouse continued. “They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare.

According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

The incidents, whether accidental or intentional, are often deadly.

In the past few years, most cruise lines have enacted onboard safety measures and surveillance systems to help reduce the risk of overboard deaths.

The Coast Guard confirmed to The Post it is still conducting a search and rescue operation in the waters off Cuba. The man has not yet been found.

WEATHER ALERT

5 advisories in effect for 13 regions in the area

Carnival freedom returns to cruising within 2 weeks of funnel fire, passengers aboard burning cruise not expected to see refund.

James Sparvero , Reporter

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – Less than two weeks since a cruise ship caught on fire, the Carnival Freedom returned to sailing Thursday.

On March 23 in the Bahamas, passengers took video of the ship’s funnel burning after it was believed to have been struck by lightning.

It was the second time in two years that the ship’s funnel caught fire.

Like the May 2022 fire, Carnival will also have to replace its signature ‘whale tail’ at the top of the funnel, which was burned again.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos ]

Thursday, passengers talked to News 6 reporter James Sparvero about boarding the ship for its first cruise to the Bahamas since the fire.

Cornelia Marshall was traveling with friends from Birmingham, Alabama.

“We put it in God’s hands,” she said. “I mean, that was an act of mother nature. There’s nothing you can do about it.”

Thursday, Carnival said it was still investigating a possible lightning strike as the cause of the fire.

Marshall and her friends also weren’t concerned about the ship catching on fire two years earlier.

“You know, when life gives you lemons, just take tequila shots because we’re coming on the cruise,” Marshall said.

Another group of passengers said they were unhappy that Carnival didn’t tell them about the March 23 incident.

Kelin Sorto from Philadelphia said she found out there was a fire from her Uber driver, who brought her family to the port.

“That’s my only concern because how fast can they fix that problem?” she said. “They assured us that it’s secure. Hopefully, it is. We’re just trying to have fun.”

Carnival refunded passengers for the two canceled cruises, but if you were on the cruise that caught on fire and you’re still expecting a refund, you won’t be getting one.

A statement from Carnival reads, “We’re very proud of the Carnival Freedom team for keeping everyone safe and still delivering a full cruise to the guests who were on board. We appreciate our guests for their cooperation and support.”

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | cruise demand leaves pandemic in rearview with record passengers, more construction on tap.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship docked at the Port of Miami on Thursday January 11, 2024. (Mike Stocker/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

MIAMI BEACH — The COVID pandemic drove the cruise industry to a standstill, but numbers released Tuesday signal the years of comeback are officially over with more expansion on tap.

More than 31.7 million passengers took cruises worldwide in 2023, said Kelly Craighead, Cruise Line International Association president and CEO, speaking at the annual Seatrade Cruise Global conference at Miami Beach Convention Center.

CLIA is the lobbying group for member cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC and most other major brands.

The pandemic shut down sailing from March 2020 with only a small number of ships coming back online 18 months later in summer 2021. Cruise lines didn’t return to full strength until partially through 2022, so it wasn’t until a full year of sailing in 2023 that the industry could get a real handle on just what the demand had grown to as people returned to vacation travel.

“We are an industry that’s resilient and thriving all around the world, breaking records in ways we might never have imagined,” she said.

The 2023 total is 2 million more than the industry had in 2019. CLIA projects 34.1 million in 2024 growing to 34.6 million in 2025. It’s still a miniscule chunk of the overall travel pie of more than 1.3 billion, but cruise’s share is growing.

She noted that surveys of travelers who would consider a cruise for a vacation are at an all-time high, noting that 82% who had previously cruised said they would cruise again, but more importantly, among those who had never sailed, 71% would consider it.

The youngest generations — Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z — are the biggest drivers.

The fleet for the growing demand continues as well, including the introduction this year of the world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

She said CLIA member lines had more than 300 ships sailing globally for the first time in 2023, with 14 new ships that began sailing in 2023 and another eight expected before the end of the year. They have 88 new ships on order through 2028.

Already this year, both Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corp. announced major new ship construction deals, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings added to that this week with its order of eight more vessels across its three brands.

The heads of those groups were on stage to discuss where the industry is headed and enjoy their recent success.

Carnival Corp.’s president and CEO Josh Weinstein put it in a way that gained plaudits from fellow panelists and others at the conference.

“The concept of pent-up demand for cruising is gone,” he said. “We have been cruising for three years, right? It’s over. This is natural demand because we all provide amazing experiences. We delivered happiness to literally 31 million guests last year. And people see it, they feel it.”

A big part of what cruising missed during the pandemic he said was that word-of-mouth promotion that is needed to convince people to try their product.

“We now have 31 million people getting off our ships and going home and telling their friends and family who have never cruised before, ‘You don’t know what you’re missing.’ ‘This is amazing.'”

All of the leaders echoed the industry line that they offer a much better value than land-based vacations, but that the experience gap between the two has now shifted in their favor coming out of the pandemic.

“The appreciation for building memories with your friends and family coming out of COVID is at extraordinarily high levels,” said Jason Liberty, president & CEO at Royal Caribbean Group. “Also wealth transfer, right? Grandparents wanting to see that wealth transfer live, watching their kids and their grandkids experience that is also at an all-time high. … We have the secular trends of people buying less stuff, they want experiences. We’re in the experience business.”

Another bright aspect to the industry has been the spillover effect of all of the new ships since the pandemic, said Harry Sommer, president & CEO at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“Their new products are so extraordinary, and so much better than what was delivered back in ’15, ’16 and ’17, that it’s driving additional excitement for the entire industry,” Somer said. “When any new ship is delivered, no matter whether it’s part of our portfolio or the other portfolios, demand improves for all of us because it adds excitement to the industry.”
