Ghost has revealed details of its upcoming RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023 summer tour with special guest Amon Amarth. Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live, the 27-date tour kicks off on Wednesday, August 2nd in Concord, CA at Concord Pavilion, with stops in Salt Lake City, Chicago, Cincinnati, Austin and more before wrapping up with the band’s Monday, September 11th return to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Ghost continues to elevate and reaffirm its status as one of the world’s most esteemed and celebrated creative forces. Accumulating well over a billion streams, the GRAMMY-winning Swedish theatrical rock band continues to bring the “euphoric spectacle” (ROLLING STONE) of its live shows to ever-growing and increasingly impassioned crowds, headlining arena tours including sold out shows from The Forum in Los Angeles and Barclays Center in New York to London’s O2 Arena and Stockholm’s Avicii Arena. Ghost are, regardless of whether you're particularly into corpse painted, Satanic-inspired heavy metal, one band that you should not miss live. Their concerts are not simply events to watch but experiential, jaw-dropping journeys to embark upon, and here's why: The Swedish sextet, clad in black hooded gowns and pointed beard-masks (yes, this is a thing) are led by their singer, known as Papa Emeritus, who dons full skull make-up and the robes and hat of a Roman Catholic pope (aside from the upside-down crosses adorning them). As well as their appearances, the band add to the intoxicating atmosphere of their shows with a backdrop of faux stained glass windows, and burn incense to give the audience the impression of being in a church, about to undergo something more than simply watching a group of men play musical instruments on a stage. They achieve this by including the audience in their twisted act, for example during the song Body and Blood, scantily-clad women appeared at the front of the stage offering the 'Eucharist' of a goblet of blood (aka wine) to the lucky fans in the front row.

I saw Ghost at the Fillmore Silver Spring, shorty after the release of their highly anticipated second album, Infestissumam, and was, frankly, blown away by the quality of their live show. Their appearances and Satan-worshipping act are contrasted by the liveliness of their music, which while categorized as heavy or black metal, is definitely more riff and vocal-driven than most metal, with songs such as the single Monstrance Clock and even an amped-up cover of the Beatles' Here Comes The Sun as part of their catchy, dancable set.

Even if you are the biggest metal-phobe around, you should go see Ghost. If heavy metal is your jam, but you're really not into the whole make-up/ crazy outfit thing, you should go see Ghost. If you're a fan or the music but are undecided on paying for a ticket, you should most definitely go see Ghost. The entire experience is something intoxicatingly unforgettable, and you will not regret it!

The wife and I got into the game a bit late but Ghost is as much a part of our yearly plans as is eating, sleeping, and hydrating. We were fortunate to have caught their last two rituals in Sweden last year and were able to capture video of Papa III being pulled off stage during Monstrance Clock. We were so happy that we made the trip from the states because seeing the end of Papa III in videos is nothing compared to the excitement of seeing it in person, from the barrier, and right up front. This band is very exciting to watch and being able to share the experience with my wife has made our evenings with Ghost that much better. My wife met Papa III last year and we've had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Copia 3 times this year during the meet and greets in New York and Pittsburgh. We're looking forward to meeting him again 4 more times out of the 6 rituals we'll be attending in December. We also already have our tickets and vacation planned for the 2 upcoming rituals taking place in Sweden in February 2019. When they make their way back to the states in 2019, we will begin planning our schedules around their tour dates. Here's a short back story as to why they are so important to me. My wife and I were just a couple of months away from signing the official court documents stating we were divorced. While trying to keep things amicable we would meet to discuss things and we'd often listen to Ghost. By the time they would be coming Philadelphia that year, we would have been attending as two single individuals and no longer married. We'd have fun listening to them and as that common ground grew stronger, so did we and slowly began reconciling. By the time they did come to Philadelphia that year, we attended as a happily married couple and continue to do so today. Getting my wife back, I can honestly say, is all thanks to Ghost and I couldn't be more grateful to them or happier sharing the experience with anyone else except for Kelly.

The concert at Liseberg amusement Park was amazing. They opened doors at 11:00 am and there was already like 30 people waiting for the concert impatiently. Security guards and workers of the Amusement Park were very nice and help people when there was an incident outside the park.

The concert started at 8:00 pm without any problem, the crowd went crazy when they went on stage. The setlist was the following:

- Absolution

At the end of the last show was when 2 bodyguards came on stage and dragged Papa Emeritus III from stage and Papa Emeritus Zero came in, anouncing that the party was over and a new era was about to start.

I only got into Ghost recently and caught their show last night in Toronto.

I decided to get some cheap tickets because I liked the music and thought they'd be fun to see live.

They by far exceeded anything I was expecting. The creepy church vibe, use of incense(which I have never encountered before, very nice touch!), Papa engaging the audience at every opportunity and even took a few minutes just to chit chat and kept us roaring and laughing for more. The use of costumes and masks was amazing.

Being an introvert I don't really go out much, and when I do I just kind of sit there and enjoy the music and the show. This is the first band that's made me get up from my chair and actually get into the show. Next time they come to the area, I'm definitely saving up and treating myself to WAY better seating!

Oh my Ghost, this is the live ritual gig experience your soul is crying out for. Full disclaimer: I love Ghost to bits and have been preaching my dark passion for years. Seeing them live again - this time in a bigger arena off the back of a couple more hit albums - reaffirms the faith.

Go and see Ghost and you will get a diverse setlist drawn from the band's spectacular back catalogue. You will get theatrics and pyrotechnics. You will get both humour and deep emotion, dark anthems and sublime instrumentals and an uplifting sense that you a witnessing something novel and special.

Ghost are - musically, aesthetically, spiritually - something to cherish and the live experience is one that is fun, compelling, cathartic and oh-so-damn-rock-n-roll. Go worship and have the time of your (after)life.

I can see Ghost every night and never get bored. It's not just the band and music, Tobias has created characters, including his own, for this band that are incredibly humble and patient with their fans. While the material can be considered risque, you will see children younger than 10 years old attending that are not only having the time of their lives, but participating in the meet and greets with their parents. Everything about these shows from the music, to the costumes, the characters, and the theatrics is so very much entertaining. We know as fans that there is so much more to look forward to with the future of Ghost and we'll have the opportunity to enjoy them for many more years. It is very exciting when tomorrow becomes today and you're standing in front eagerly awaiting Ashes to start.

If you have Ghost, you have everything.

Theatre; spectacle; a sense of cult worship; dark humour; thick fugs of incense; electric, otherwordly energy; lighting and atmospherics; collective frenzy; and most of all, the sweet music of the night.

Ghost are beautiful for so many reasons. Beneath their sublime subversive style - iconoclastic and gleefully irreverent - is a musical powerhouse making the most compelling and catchy rock in this epoch. The craftsmanship is incredible. The mystique is immense. It's a joy to behold in the flesh (and blood) and if you have the opportunity to absorb the spirit of Ghost in person, surrender to it.

Honestly, Ghost was one of the greatest entertainment experiences I've had. Join them in their ritual and hail your Master...

This was the best show I have ever been to (I have seen a lot too). Ghost put on an electric performance with great theatrics as well as fun conversational bits while the musicians took a couple minutes to get water, wipe the sweat off from under those masks, etc. We were also delighted by the pyrotechnics, fog machines, and surprise mummy dust confetti! Well executed and the band sounded amazing live. I wish I had gotten tickets for the following night too! I will definitely be seeing them when they come back into town. Ghost really knows how to stimulate all their fans' senses. Many thanks to the band for their commitment to their fans and the melodic tunes they share with us. Keep them coming please!!!

The Ghost show was truly amazing. For me, this was mainly due to two things:

1. Each and every member of this band knows his instrument very well, and they play their songs flawlessly and with ease. Leaving them energy to interact with the crowd while still not missing a note/beat.

2. Their concept is so well thought through. From the incense and small unveiling ritual before their set starts to the sisters of sin and perfected visual in set, movements and costumes, everything works brilliantly. And with Papa giving some background info to songs and rituals, you really get the feeling you are part of a well-oiled ritual.

I am very glad I've been to the show, and can't wait to see this band again :)

Awesome band! I had a older friend come with last night to the Stockholm show and even thou she said "It's not exactly my favourite but it was a terrific show,tunes to sing along to and this isn't the last time we do this!" with a huge smile on her face. This was my second Ritual, i love the costume changes, you really feel like your seeing a theatrical show instead of a regular concert, I'm use to sitting up front but this time sat in the balcony to see a spectacular light show and pyrotechnics, we sat in the upper balcony and could feel the heat from the pyro effects.I only wish i could have been yp front closer to Cardinal Copia,to get his blessings. Will not be the last time i go to see Ghost!

Ghost has announced details of its summer 2023 American tour, dubbed “Re-Imperatour USA.”

The band is set to kick off the new run of dates in Concord, CA, on August 2, touring across the country until September 11, when it will wrap things up with a huge show at LA’s Kia Forum. It will be joined on the dates by special guest Amon Amarth.

Tickets for the 27-date tour will be available through Citi cardmembers’ and artists’ pre-sales from tomorrow (February 14). Following that, tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday (17) at 10am local time. For more details and to purchase, visit Ticketmaster .

The “Re-Imperatour USA” tour news follows Ghost holding its first-ever pop-up event at LA’s Whisky A Go Go venue earlier this month. “Metal Myths Presents: Ghost – Reverence & Resurrection” paid tribute to the classic 1969 era of Ghost, a band that didn’t actually form until almost four decades later.

The exhibit featured artifacts that had never been publicly displayed before, including the band’s 1960 costumes and ghoul masks, rare magazine covers, and more from a treasure trove of ephemera.

Meanwhile, Ghost also recently shared a new version of its track “Spillways,” featuring guest vocals from Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott. The new take on the song featured in Chapter 15 of Ghost’s long-running series of webisodes, with the installment in question documenting a karaoke session that goes awry in a spectacular and supernatural fashion.

Ghost Announce 2023 ‘Re-Imperatour’ U.S. Tour Dates With Amon Amarth

Ghost have announced their first set of U.S. tour dates for 2023. Dubbed the Re-Imperatour, the 27-date tour will feature Amon Amarth as the opener.

The run will kick off Aug. 2 in Concord, Calif. and wrap up Sept. 11 in Los Angeles at the renowned Kia Forum. Amon Amarth will join Ghost throughout the entirety of the tour, except for the Los Angeles show. Tickets go on sale this Friday, Feb. 17 at 10AM local time.

Earlier this year, Ghost leader Tobias Forge teased that "good change" would be coming to the band prior to embarking on any of their 2023 tours.

“We’re going to come out with a little bit of change before that – good change," the vocalist told Metal Hammer . "We’re not going to go silent. Some things are public, other things not in public view, but there are a lot of things brewing.”

While it's unclear what Forge was alluding to, Ghost have undergone quite a bit of change as it is over the last several months, especially when their 2019 song "Mary on a Cross" went viral on TikTok , which exposed the band to a whole new fanbase.

As per Setlist.fm , Ghost's most recent concert took place in September. They have a European tour scheduled throughout May and June before returning to the U.S. in August. Check out tickets for the European shows here .

Inside Ghost's first US show of 2022: new songs, new look, new era

Papa Emeritus IV makes his official live debut on Ghost's US tour with Volbeat and we got a good look at the next stage of their evolution - including new-look Nameless Ghouls

Sweden's satanic majesties Ghost have unveiled a whole new stage show and aesthetic for the start of their US tour with Danish rockers Volbeat . On January 25th the band played their first full show in almost two years when they kicked off their tour at Reno Event Centre, marking also the first full performance from Papa Emeritus IV since the former Cardinal Copia was annointed in Mexico City on March 3rd 2020 after the on-stage 'death' of Papa Nihil (video below).

So what has Papa been up to in the 693 days since we last saw him? Well, a whole lot of overhauling, it seems. With this show giving us our first proper look at the new era of Ghost, we thought it high time to look at what we know about Impera so far...

The new song 'Kaisarion' is EPIC

Ghost kicked off the new era with a completely new song from their upcoming album Impera . Titled Kaisarion , the song is exactly the kind of ludicrous, over-the-top genius we desperately needed from Ghost after the past couple of years, complete with a Halford-worthy scream that has us thrusting our fists at the sky just thinking about it.

Sure, Prequelle had us grinning ear-to-ear at times (goddamn, we're going to miss the sax solo of Miasma ) but the album's plague themes hit just a little too close to home these days, so having something utterly joyous to kick off the show feels like exactly the right kind of move. Plus, it feels like Ghost's brand of anthemic arena metal is now drawing from the likes of Boston , Journey and Bon Jovi , which might piss off the purists who wish the band sounded more like Entombed but is absolutely perfect for those of us who are out to have a great time with riffs, sing-alongs and Satan.

Things got a little Spinal Tap

As the saying goes, "twice the pride double the fall". Ghost have been playing to massive crowds for a good while now, but that doesn't mean there aren't teething problems after two years without gigs. The band's epic reveal at the climax of the Kaisarion intro didn't quite go to plan when the curtain covering the stage never shifted (which, unless Ghost are going Gorillaz, seems like a slight problem when you've set up a massive visual extravaganza).

But fans were happy to just see the band again

Curtain snafu aside, Ghost marked the epoch of a new era with all the visual flair fans have come to expect. The stage dressing looks largely the same as it did on A Tour Named Death , evoking a massive cathedral (which, considering the band's religious overtones makes perfect sense). That doesn't mean the band didn't have a whole new aesthetic to show off, however.

New album, new look

They might not have ditched the corpsepaint and masks, but there's no denying Ghost are looking decidedly different for this new era. Papa seems to be going through more costume changes than Cher and the new-look Nameless Ghouls are utterly terrifying in their gasmasks and jackboots, looking like villains straight out of GI Joe. We kinda love it, though...

Some internet sleuths already spotted the new-look Nameless Ghouls

As it turns out, we'd already been teased with the new-look Nameless Ghouls when the band put out promo pics for Papa Emeritus IV. While some of us were delighted to see the new and shiny Papa, some clever souls spotted the Nameless Ghouls standing menacingly in the background. Good sleuthing, that.

People love Papa's new look

Cardinal Copia wasn't exactly a slouch when it came to outfits on the Prequelle run, but coming after the dandy Papa Emeritus III it was hard not to feel like he couldn't quite match his svelte predecessor. It turns out it may just have been a lack of wardrobe access, however as the new-look Papa Emeritus IV is setting a whole new bar for fiendish flair.

But are divided on the new-look Nameless Ghouls

As exciting as it is to have a whole new era of Ghost to dive into, its also inevitable that some fans will pine for the band's classic look. The Nameless Ghouls in particular have split opinion, which isn't entirely surprising considering some fans used to love cosplaying as the vital cogs in Ghost's machine. The unspoken bright-side that everyone seems to miss is that gasmasks are surely the perfect accessory for ensuring no tour dates get pulled due to the pandemic...

Ghost's set is positively rammed with bangers

After kicking things off with a brand new tune, Ghost wasted absolutely no time in getting stuck into the kind of floor-filling, crowd-filling anthems that have made them into a headline sensation. With four albums already out and a fifth on the way (as well as a smattering of EPs and 7" singles) it was inevitable that they would need to tighten the set up some, but by this point they've amassed such an arsenal of arena-worthy songs that it's almost ridiculous. Rats , From The Pinnacle To The Pit, Mary On A Cross, Cirice... All in a row! We're honestly worried for our voices when the band come to the UK, particularly when the likes of Kiss The Go Goat and Square Hammer pop up.

Hunter's Moon is already sounding like a Ghost classic

Though we didn't know it back in September, Hunter's Moon turned out to be the first song from Impera proffered for our listening pleasure. At the time, the song was released as a stand-alone with no album release info offered, tied to the release of last year's horror sequel Halloween Kills . As utterly perfect as it was hearing the song in the cinema playing out over the closing credits (after a healthy dose of splatter, no less), its appearance in the setlist (sandwiched between Cirice and Faith ) cements the fact that Hunter's Moon is a straight-up banger . No sign of Call Me Little Sunshine, though

It's only been a week since Ghost released Call Me Little Sunshine and announced the release date of their fifth album, but we're already desperate to hear it. If Hunter's Moon is a stylish, deadly floor-filler in the vein of the band's Prequelle material, Call Me Little Sunshine dials the clock back just a little further to percussive riffing of Meliora . Unfortunately the song didn't make an appearance on the first show of the tour, but with plenty more shows to come (and more time to drill the song into our brains) there's still hope we'll get it further down the road.

Ghost can't resist a great cover

Ghost have never been a band afraid to journey through cover country, tackling the likes of Roky Erickson, ABBA and The Beatles over the years. Hell, the first appearance of Papa Emeritus IV after his inauguration was during a televised stream by fellow Swedish rockers The Hellacopters , where he came out to sing a rendition of the Rolling Stones ' Sympathy For The Devil. The new set featured a cover more directly in metal territory, however - Ghost's own rendition of Enter Sandman , as featured on last year's Metallica Blacklist covers collection . Kicking off their encore it makes sense Ghost would want something massive, and it doesn't come much bigger than Metallica .

Nine is the magic number

While we knew Ghost's congregation seemed to balloon with each new album, we weren't quite prepared for the clergy to fill out too. We counted no less than nine members of the band on-stage when the band took their final bow, meaning Ghost now have (at least) as many members as Slipknot . God forbid the two bands ever tour together; those poor, poor caterers.

When the Imperatour hits Europe, its going to be special

With their US co-headline tour taking them right up to March 3, Ghost will have about a month to recuperate before jumping right back into the fire with a massive European and UK arena tour . By that time, Impera will be on shelves and, if current singles are anything to go by, lodged in brains, promising some utterly mammoth sing-alongs. See you down the front.

GHOST is continuing to tour in support of its latest album, "Impera" , which sold 70,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It marked the third top 10 album — and fifth top 40-charting set — for the Swedish act. The 12-song effort was produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace .

"Impera" landed at position No. 1 in Germany and Sweden, No. 2 in the U.K., Netherlands, Belgium and Norway, No. 3 in Australia, No. 5 in France and Ireland, and No. 20 in Italy.

GHOST leader Tobias Forge worked on the follow-up to 2018's "Prequelle" with Åhlund and Swedish co-writers Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare , whose credits include Madonna and Lady Gaga .

Last month GHOST released a new version of its song "Spillways" featuring a guest appearance by DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott .

"Spillways" is taken from "Impera" , which was released in March 2022.

Ghost Announce 2022 North American Tour with Mastodon and Spiritbox

Ghost are returning stateside for another tour kicking off in the late summer. This time around, the Swedish metal lords will be joined by Mastodon and Spiritbox , making for a powerhouse bill.

Having already conquered US arenas on their winter trek with Volbeat, Ghost have just announced the new run of headlining dates for their “Imperatour.” The month-long outing kicks off August 26th in San Diego, and runs through a September 23rd show in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday (May 20th) at 10 a.m local time via Ticketmaster , with a Live Nation pre-sale taking place on day earlier on Thursday (May 19th) using code FINALE .

Ghost released their fifth album, Impera , on March 11th, with the band embracing a ’70s arena rock sound on the LP. The single “Call Me Little Sunshine” has ascended to the top of the US rock radio chart.

Christina Hendricks and her fiancé, now husband, George Bianchini, are officially married!

The Mad Men actress and George, a camera operator, officially became husband and wife with a three-day wedding weekend in New Orleans, which she described as both "sexy" and "gothic."

Speaking with People about their April 20 nuptials, Christina explained: "New Orleans is a place that I always loved to go before I met George, and a place that he always loved to go before he met me. And then when we first started dating or meeting up, because we lived across the country from one another, it was the place in the middle.

"It just feels like our city together, even though we both loved it individually." The pair met in 2020, and got engaged last year.

Interview: The Ghost Inside Continue to Push Forward – ‘We’ve Always Been an Uplifting + Positive Band’

O n Friday night (April 19) — the same day of the release of their latest album, Searching For Solace — the Ghost Inside’s Jonathan Vigil and Zach Johnson joined Loudwire Nights to discuss how the band’s 2015 tour bus accident continues to shape their perspectives.

“We don’t let it hang over our heads,” Vigil said about the accident, “but it’s something that is a constant reminder — I have a fused ankle and a new ACL. My back’s a mess and Zach’s got his various injuries.”

While he admitted it’s an experience they’ll never get away from, Vigil added, “It gives us a whole new lease on what we’re doing and a whole new lease on life.

“It’s cliche to say, but it’s almost like you don’t know what you have until it’s gone, which is the truth…now we’re coming back into this with just everything we have, because we almost didn’t have it.”

When Chuck asked what keeps them focused on not losing sight of that perspective, Vigil was quick to answer.

“I think a lot of it is the ethos of the band,” he said.

“We’ve always been an uplifting and positive band. I’ve really tried to use the platform for good. I told myself back when I first started doing this, if I’m ever in a position to talk to a lot of people, I want to make an impact.”

Later in the conversation Johnson added, “Our fans were there through our whole recovery. They saw the struggles we had … We had those people there with us through those hard times and now when we have these victories, like being able to put out another record, we feel like we get to share that with them.”

Lubyanka: Inside the Story of Moscow’s Infamous Building and District

There is always history surrounding us. In a city like Moscow, this can seem overwhelmingly apparent. Moscow has many imposing buildings from many eras – some are immediately recognizable and others only invite wonder as to what stories lay behind their beauty or grime.

Lubyanka is the name commonly used to refer to the building that has historically housed the security services of the USSR and modern Russia, from the Cheka to the KGB to the FSB. The name has also, for a much longer history, been applied to the adjacent square and surounding neighborhood.

The Lubyanka Building

The building now known as Lubyanka was originally several buildings.

The two largest were originally designed by Alexander Ivanov and were separated by a street. The largest of these two was built in 1898 and the smaller in 1902 by the All-Russia Insurance Company. Insurance and banking were rapidly growing and profitable industries at that time. Insurance companies would often invest their substantial cash holdings in real estate. Thus, most of the buildings were built as residential and the space was rented for profit.

Perhaps ironically, the original, much more ornate façade of the main building included two female figures representing Justice and Solace.

The buildings were seized following the 1917 revolution and became the headquarters for the secret police – the Cheka at the time, though it has served in the same role for the various iterations of the Soviet, and now Russian, state security services – from the OGPU and NKVD, the KGB, and now the FSB.

Lubyanka prison was established in 1920 inside a two story structure adjacent to the main buildings. It had originally been a hotel built, again, by the All-Russia Insurance Company. It was soon expanded to six floors. Jokes referred to it as the “tallest building in Moscow,” as one could purportedly see Siberia (and the Gulag system) from its basement, as that was the fate that awaited most that saw the inside of the prison’s walls.

In 1940, Aleksey Shchusev was commissioned to enlarge the complex to accommodate the increasing amount of staff required to handle the Great Purge. The staff had grown from 2,500 in 1928 to nearly 34,000 in 1940.

An extra floor was added, and the main building expanded horizontally, consuming and incorporating nearby buildings. This expansion was interrupted by the Nazi invasion, leaving the facade lopsided until it was completed under the orders of Yuri Andropov in the 1980s.

The building now contains FSB headquarters, a group of holding cells, the headquarters of the Border Guard Service, and two museums: one devoted to the KGB/FSB and one dedicated to the old prison (neither is actually open to the public).

The Museums Inside the Lubyanka Building

The museums offer regularly updated exhibits, both historical and modern. The Museum of the KGB, now known as the Historical Demonstration Hall of the FSB of Russia, is located inside the Lubyanka complex, and contains four rooms and over two thousand exhibits.

Exhibits cover the history of Russian and Soviet counterintelligence, and there are documents from the times of both Peter and Catherine the Great, as well as the Napoleonic War and WWI. There are separate stands with information on events relating to mass repressions, as well as a room dedicated to WWII. The museum also includes a significant amount of technical equipment that has been used for reconnaissance and counterintelligence purposes, as well as more recent documents relating to FSB operations.

The prison museum has never been open to the public and is maintained only for FSB personnel and high-ranking government officials. The “Demonstration Hall” was opened to the public in 1989. Accessing it was still difficult, as it is located inside the FSB complex and tours were offered almost exclusively through private tour companies and only after screening potential visitors. In recent years, the tours became rarer and today this museum, too, is officially closed to outside visitors.

Lubyanka: Fountain, Statue, or Abstract Nothing?

The names were not the only thing that changed. In 1835, a fountain was installed on the square. This fountain was called Nikolsky Fountain (its name borrowed from the same gates mentioned above), and was designed by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Vitali and supplied potable water to the neighborhood.

Nikolsky Fountain is one of the oldest in Moscow, and it still stands, but no longer on Lubyanka. It was moved in the 1930s to a new location in the courtyard of Alexandrinsky Palace in Neskuchny Garden, part of the Gorky Park complex in central Moscow.

Moscow Lubyanka Inside Dzerzhinsky Removal

In 1958, a 15-ton iron statue of Dzerzhinsky, known as “Iron Felix” was installed in its former place on Lubyanka. This statue, in turn, was toppled in a public demonstration after the fall of the Soviet Union. It was transferred by the Russian Academy of Arts to the Muzeon, also known as Fallen Monument Park, to be joined by many other Soviet statues removed or toppled at that time.

In 2017, a general renovation of Lubyanka and the surrounding traffic patterns was announced by the city. It was debated if the fountain or even Iron Felix should be brought back. In the end, however, the space was enlarged and landscaped with flat, circular geometric shapes. The space, used and undecorated, remains largely unused.

In 2021, another effort to bring back the statue was proposed by the modern Communist Party in Moscow. The mayor initially agreed to allow the issue to be voted on in a referendum, but soon reversed his decision and killed the initiative.

The Solovetsky Stone

The Solovetsky Stone is a monument located across the street from Lubyanka Square in a separated area known as Musuem Park. It was created in commemoration of the political prisoners who were repressed under the GULAG system.

The Solovetsky Stone is a large granite block brought from the Solovetsky Islands, where the Solovetsky Special Purpose Camp operated in the 1920s and 1930s as part of the GULAG system. It was officially opened on October 30, 1990.

Founding such a memorial had become a matter of public discussion a few years earlier, in the late 1980s. The Memorial Society, now a globally-respected NGO, began a petition with the goal of creating a monument of political repression in 1987, and in 1988, a Public Council for the creation of such a monument was formed. A contest was also held in 1988, wherein people could submit their monument ideas and suggest locations, but a winner for this contest was never chosen.

The specific stone idea came from a memorial created in the village of Solovetsky in 1989 by former Solovetsky prisoners, many of whom stayed there after their release, and members of the Memorial Society. Members of the Society from Arkhangelsk, St. Petersburg, and Moscow liked the idea so much that they acquired boulders to place in their own cities.

The opening of the Moscow memorial on served as a triumph not only in its own right, but also marked the first official recognition of the Day of Victims of Political Repression since that day began to be recognized by dissidents in 1974. Every year on this day, people now gather near the Solovetsky Stone to mourn. Since 2007, a practice called the ‘Return of Names’ has taken place on the 29th from 10 AM to 10 PM – people from across the city gather in a long line to take turns reading the names of Muscovites who were executed. Similar actions take place in many other cities and even other countries, on this day or the next.

The Solovetsky Stone has also become an unofficial site for civil protest, serving not only as a memorial but as a symbol for modern-day political dissonance.

Imagine Dragons Plan Summer Tour for New Album, ‘Loom’

The Imagine Dragons will kick off an arena tour this summer — tied to the release of their new nine-track album, Loom (out June 28) — and it will run through the fall.

What to stream this week: A Bon Jovi documentary, Idris Elba in 'Knuckles' and 'Anyone But You'

The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romantic comedy “Anyone But You” hitting Netflix and an album by Brazil superstar Anitta are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists : Everyone’s favorite dancing demon doll “M3GAN” comes back to Peacock, a beautiful woman battles hideous beasts in Sony’s video game Stellar Blade, and a documentary detailing Bon Jovi’s early days, rise to fame and breakups and breakdowns.

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

— The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romantic comedy “Anyone But You” is finally on Netflix starting Tuesday. The movie is about two young singles whose magical one-night stand ends in miscommunication and hurt feelings, and then find themselves both in a small family wedding party and staying in the same house. It’s loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Reviews were mixed and the box office started out tame, but it became a slow burn sleeper hit in theaters, earning more than $218 million worldwide. If you’ve been holding out to see what the fuss was about, now is your low stakes chance (it’s also not a bad plane option, which is where this film critic finally watched it). And afterwards, if you need a rom-com palate cleanser, “You’ve Got Mail” is also currently on Netflix.

— Another stealth box office hit, everyone’s favorite dancing demon doll “M3GAN” is coming back to Peacock starting Wednesday. Is it great cinema? Probably not, but everyone who watches it seems to have a fun time (in spite of themselves). Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt wrote in her review that, “This is not the morose, carnage-soaked horror of dank basements and clammy night terrors; most of the movie happens in bright daylight, every maniacal head tilt, ungodly hip swivel, and murder-by-gardening-tool calibrated for screams that end not with a gasp but a giggle. M3GAN came to play, and possibly reboot her motherboard for a sequel. Are you not entertained?”

— Finally, if you’ve exhausted all your “Tortured Poets” analysis, you can pivot to watching a Joe Alwyn movie instead. He stars in Claire Denis’ 2022 romantic thriller “Stars at Noon,” which comes to Hulu on Sunday, April 28. Based on the 1986 Denis Johnson novel, Margaret Qualley plans an American journalist in Nicaragua during COVID-19 who starts an affair with a mysterious British guy, played by Alwyn.

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM

— Shot through the heart, and they’re to blame: Forty years after a bunch of kids from New Jersey got together and formed a great American rock band, a documentary detailing their early days, rise to fame, and best of all — breakups and breakdowns — has arrived. The only Bon Jovi documentary series to feature all members past and present, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story” premieres on Hulu Friday, April 26 in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories. Binge all four-parts one after the other or dole them out slowly. However you do it, expect to have “Livin’ On A Prayer” stuck in your head for the next week.

— Anitta , arguably Brazil’s most recognizable global pop singer since Astrud Gilberto sang “The Girl From Ipanema” nearly 60 years ago, is preparing to release a new album Friday, April 26. It’s titled “Funk Generation,” her first since the 2022’s “Versions of Me,” and its viral hits “Envolver” and “Girl From Rio” (with its interpolation of the Gilberto classic) made her an international star. She’s long aimed to bring Brazilian sounds to the worldwide music market, and focusing on Brazilian funk is an extension of that desire. “’Funk Generation’ is an album where I celebrate my roots. It’s where I express the power of Rio’s funk in every track its unique, danceable, and sensual beats,” she said in a statement. “It’s a rhythm born in the favelas, where I grew up, and it exudes resistance and art in every community.”

— It is time to give Midwest MCs their flowers: Fresh off a tour opening for Migos rapper Offset , Detroit’s Skilla Baby is preparing to drop a new project on Friday, April 26, “The Coldest.” If his trap earworm “Bae,” with its celebratory, ladies-first lyrics (“Bae, you know you’re fine, don’t you?” in the chorus) and the community-focused “Plate” are a taste of what’s to come, the release is going to be delicious.

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

— “The Big Door Prize,” a sweet, silly dramedy about the residents of a small town turned upside down by the arrival of a machine that reveals a person’s true calling, returns for a second season on Apple TV+. Starring Chris O’Dowd as a local high school teacher, “The Big Door Prize” is based on a book by M.O. Walsh and was one of The Associated Press’ TV shows worth watching in 2023. Season two of “The Big Door Prize” debuts Wednesday. Season one is also still available on the streamer.

— Two teen ghost detectives who appear in DC comic books star in their own series called “Dead Boy Detectives.” The story follows Edwin and Charles, two long-dead teens who spend their afterlife still on Earth and investigating paranormal cases. They’re assisted by a living teen named Crystal Palace who is a clairvoyant. “Dead Boy Detectives” also features Lukas Gage in an over-the-top, comedic role of the Cat King. “The Summer I Turned Pretty” actor David Iacono plays a demon. The ghostly investigations begin Thursday on Netflix.

— Idris Elba and Adam Pally reprise their “Sonic the Hedgehog” characters for the new animated series “Knuckles” on Paramount+. Elba plays Knuckles, an Echidna with super strength, who is adjusting after moving to Earth at the end of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Pally is Wade Whipple, a not-so-bright deputy sheriff. “Knuckles” is part of Paramount’s efforts to expand the popular “Sonic” brand. Ben Schwartz and Tika Sumpter also reprise roles from the films. All six-episodes of “Knuckles” stream Friday, April 26.

NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

— Sony’s Stellar Blade takes place on an Earth that’s been mostly abandoned after an invasion by hordes of mysterious monsters called the Naytiba. Enter Eve, a sword- and gun-wielding warrior who has returned to her home planet to help out the few people left, including a scavenger named Adam. The Biblical references pile up — for example, the last city standing is Xion — but the real influence is the popular hack-and-slash epic Bayonetta. If you’ve been craving another flamboyant adventure with a beautiful woman battling hideous beasts, Korean studio Shift Up hopes it’s got you covered. Start swinging Friday, April 26, on PlayStation 5.

— Electronic Arts’ Tales of Kenzera: Zau is less campy and more down to earth. Its protagonist, Zau, aims to become a healer and, maybe, bring his father back from the Land of the Dead. The aspiring shaman has some nifty parkour skills as well as sun and moon masks, which allow him to, respectively, launch spears and manipulate time as he fights evil spirits. Tales of Kenzera is the debut title from Surgent Studios, which was founded by voice actor Abubakar Salim, and he says it was inspired by Bantu folklore as well as his own experience with grief. The journey begins Tuesday on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.
