Fontaines DC review – ire, tenderness and very good moshpit
EartH, London Showcasing tracks from their instant-classic new album Skinty Fia, Dublin’s introspective post-punk five-piece are in their element in a now rare small-scale gig
C lad in a Scarface T-shirt, slick with sweat, Fontaines DC singer Grian Chatten slams his microphone stand down on the stage repeatedly, as though punishing the floor beneath him. The stage, however, is blameless. Formed in 2017 and named after a character from a mafia movie and their home city of Dublin, Fontaines DC have established their reputation as would-be guitar-music saviours, all the while questioning that burgeoning fame and the prevailing thumbnail sketch of their band as Irish post-punks with a poetic bent. The stage is probably their most natural habitat, where all the bristling ambivalence of their work translates into certainties: intense songs, delivered with commitment. As often as Joy Division have cropped up as a reference to Fontaines DC’s strain of low-slung ill ease, they’ve been matched by Chatten’s studies of frontmen such as Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown.
At once cherubic and lairy, Chatten spends much of this small club show on the lip of the stage, balancing on monitors or perched on the metal barrier, stirring up the crowd, extending his wriggling fingers towards them, Sistine Chapel ceiling-style. The audience pays Fontaines DC back in outstretched limbs, umpteen crowd-surfers and word-for-word singalongs.
This gig takes place a few days before the release of the band’s third album, Skinty Fia , providing an opportunity for fans to hear some new songs and get within two metres of an outfit whose snug club days are already over. FDC’s last London gig but one was at the 10,000-capacity Alexandra Palace; here, it’s 1,200. The band are not just an Anglo-Irish success story though. Their second album, A Hero’s Death (2020), was nominated for a Grammy in the US. An old song Fontaines DC play tonight at the climax of their set – Boys in the Better Land – chafes at the Irish habit of lionising new lives in new worlds.
But now the band seem to be in with a chance of being those very boys, with recent slots on US TV shows segueing into a month-long North American live campaign. Skinty Fia completes a classic-sounding trio of albums; it tackles a number of thorny themes, not least the vexed job of being an Irish person abroad – the band all live in London now – and whether those deep roots nourish or bind.
With their reputation as a live act already well established – bassist Conor Deegan attempting to dig his own hole in the stage with the head of his upside-down bass during Too Real is one of tonight’s more memorable vignettes – what’s telling is the crowd’s embrace of the new songs as old friends. No one folds their arms; there is no exodus to the bar.
Jackie Down the Line, debuted in January, is a portrait of toxic masculinity that doubles as a tuneful banger. Perhaps in a nod to the song’s video, Chatten brandishes a bunch of red roses as he sings about someone who got away with murder. This murder ballad of sorts has more than a faint edge of any number of Pogues songs about abuse and disappointment. But Fontaines DC’s lyrics repay close listening. At some point near the end, “Jackie down the line” changes to “I’m one Jackeen of a line” – “jackeen” being a derogatory word for a Dubliner.
Even better, perhaps, is I Love You , first aired during the band’s 2021 tour. Deegan’s juddering bassline heralds a strobe-lit love song in which Chatten delivers a rant aimed in part at his homeland – “the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil” – and in part at himself: “I had 30 ways of dying looking at me from the shelf,” he bawls. In all the praise for this band, not enough is made of Tom Coll’s relentless drumming, which keeps the chaos of the two guitars on a tight leash.
Every Fontaines DC album thus far has come with assertions that the band are breaking new ground in an effort not to repeat themselves . In fact every record of theirs provides a thoroughly audible through-line, and Skinty Fia concludes a winning triptych by not messing with that formula overmuch. They remain that post-punk band, constantly gnawing away at their own identity, giving very good moshpit.
Only one new track really breaks with the five-piece’s carousel of ire, tenderness and gloom: the title track, which introduces baggy dance beats and with it a taste of the Stone Roses. The rhythms work much better on record than they do in the flesh, where the detail is lost.
Skinty Fia finds Chatten, meanwhile, swinging between his twin peaks. “I let her prize apart my ribcage like a crackhead at the blinds,” he sings in his guise as a gutter poet. And yet lines such as “But we can talk about it later/ You can read it in the paper” can’t help but bring to mind Oasis, especially when Chatten delivers his lyrics as a challenge.

Last month, Fontaines D.C. released a second track from their highly anticipated new album Skinty Fia – to be released on April 22nd on Partisan Records . “I Love You,” was met with international acclaim and joined the first single, “Jackie Down The Line,” in building widespread excitement for the band’s third album. Today, the beloved Irish band – who just took home the trophy for “Best Band In The World” at the 2022 BandLab NME Awards – released the album’s titular track “Skinty Fia,” accompanied by a music video.
Stream / Download “Skinty Fia” HERE and watch the video HERE .
Skinty Fia is an Irish phrase which translates to English as “the damnation of the deer” and the album’s cover art features a deer, plucked from its natural habitat and deposited in the hallway of a home, illuminated by an artificial red glow. The phrase, which is used to display disappointment or annoyance, resonated with frontman Grian Chatten as the correct expression of his feelings towards the “mutation” of Irish culture abroad. The song explores the idea through the lens of a relationship doomed by paranoia, alcohol and drugs. The accompanying music video, directed by Hugh Mulhern , captures the tension in the song, as Grian manoeuvres his way through a bustling party crowd, seemingly unnoticed, in what turns out to be a disorientating, surrealist dreamscape. “Skinty Fia” operates as the album’s anchor, setting the tone for the rest of the record, as the band explores new musical terrain while lyrically they grapple with a need to broaden their horizons following a recent relocation to London.
There are echoes of Dogrel ’s rumbustious rock ’n’ roll, and the bleaker atmospheres of A Hero’s Death , but Skinty Fia , the third in the triumvirate, is much more expansive and cinematic. Fontaines D.C. are a band in a state of constant evolution and this time the result is an album of shifting moods, startling insight, maturity, and considerable emotional wallop.

I was lucky enough to see them in Boston in the House of Blues and they were awesome. Even better than that I met the great Conor Deeney 111 and had a chat and he signed my tricolour. Then we met Conor Curley and Tom Coll and we discussed the plights of Cork Hurling, Monaghan and Mayo football and where we could find a venue in Cork to house a huge crowd. Cyprus Avenue ..to small. Opera House ...too boring. City Hall ... just right. They were the soundest and interesting guys to talk to you could meet. They could not believe we went to Boston to see them. Since we came home we have been in Manchester and Glasgow to see them. The Limerick gig.. can't wait for. We (my wife and I are also going to Derry to see them. Why do we love them so much? Because they sing about reality in the Ireland we know. Love the guys! One more album and they are into big stadiums. Nice to see the Artic monkeys supporting them on their North American tour. Fair Dues! I can't name one Artic Monkeys song. "Their childhood was small now they are gonna be big"!!!!

This band is brilliant and seeing them live was unforgettable-even days after their show, I find myself thinking of it. Other reviewers criticize they do not interact with the crowd, short set, etc-personally, I don't care about that rubbish. It is about the music for me and these guys played a breathtaking show, hands down.
Massive let down. Band seemed completely uninterested. No real spark and zero interaction with the crowd. To top it all off, the sound was absolutely dreadful. The night never got going and I left early. Dogrel was one of my favourite albums of 2019, but Fontaines was one of my worst gig experiences ever.

Fontaines D.C.
In support of their third album, fontaines d.c. have announced a uk and ireland tour in 2022, which includes a night at the o2 academy edinburgh on 28th november.
About Fontaines D.C.
Beloved Irish band, Fontaines D.C., who took home the trophy for “Best Band In The World” at the 2022 BandLab NME Awards, are back with their mighty third album Skinty Fia. Irish post-punks Fontaines D.C. came together at music college in Dublin. Grian Chatten (vocals), Conor Deegan III (bass), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar) and Tom Coll (drums) bonded over a mutual love of poetry, from Kerouac and Ginsberg to Irish icons such as Yeats and Lorca. They named their band after the crooner Johnny Fontaine from The Godfather, adding the D.C. (Dublin City) after discovering a similarly named LA band. The band’s initial releases were two short volumes of poetry and these lyrical foundations featured prominently on their critically acclaimed 2019 debut album Dogrel. The record blended a muscular post-punk sound with vivid verse barked out in Chatten’s charismatic Dublin accent, most notable on singles Big, Boys In The Better Land and Hurricane Laughter. A slew of five-star reviews and album of the year awards followed, notably from Rough Trade and BBC 6 Music. Relentless touring in the wake of Dogrel took its toll on the band. Back home in Dublin, Chatten's fear of no longer being able to write led to the band quickly setting to work on a follow-up. In May 2020 they announced that their second album, A Hero’s Death, was set for release at the end of July. The band also released the title track as the first single, accompanied by a video starring Irish actor Aiden Gillen (Game Of Thrones, The Wire). A second single I Don’t Belong followed in June. The album signalled a move to a darker and more atmospheric sound than its predecessor, while the artwork (featuring the legendary Irish warrior Cú Chulainn) and album title (inspired by the writings of Brendan Behan) showed that Irish literature remained a cornerstone of the band's identity.

Fontaines D.C. released a brand new tune called ‘Roman Holiday’ on 19th April. Following previous singles ‘I Love You,’ ‘Jackie Down The Line’ and the album’s title track, the song is the fourth to be taken from the Irish band’s upcoming new album, ‘Skinty Fia,’ which is due for release on 22nd April via Partisan Records.
During a live-streamed St. Patrick’s Day show in Dublin last month, Fontaines D.C. covered The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’.
That cover came the same week that CHVRCHES performed their rendition of ‘Just Like Heaven’ for the second time, two weeks after they initially performed the song on stage at the BandLab NME Awards 2022 with Cure vocalist Robert Smith.
Meanwhile, the band won the award for Best Band In The World at last month’s BandLab NME Awards 2022, beating Amyl & The Sniffers, Ben&Ben, Bring Me The Horizon, CHVRCHES, Glass Animals, HAIM, Måneskin, Nova Twins, and Wolf. Fontaines D.C. won the only prize they were nominated for at the BandLab NME Awards 2022.
