FAQs on Amalfi Coast Tours

Explore over 30 miles of coastline with popular towns like Capri and Positano, and visit attractions such as Il Sentiero Degli Dei, Villa Cimbrone Gardens, Duomo di Sant’Andrea, Villa Rufolo, and Duomo di Salerno. The best tours of the Amalfi Coast cover a wide range of attractions and towns, and with our expertly planned itineraries, you can arrive rested and ready to enjoy what the Amalfi Coast has to offer.

The two best seasons to visit the Amalfi Coast are the spring and the fall. This is because the weather is great but not too hot, so you can explore without needing frequent breaks in air-conditioned cafés. What’s more, these times are outside of peak season, so you’ll be able to enjoy smaller queues for all of the attractions.

Naples is the nearest airport to the Amalfi Coast. From there, you can get a train, taxi, bus, or ferry to your accommodation.

Given the high temperatures and UV rays, don lightweight clothing that covers your skin, pack a hat and sunglasses for daytime explorations, and bring stylish outfits for evenings, as the Amalfi Coast is renowned for its sophistication. Don’t forget to bring layers for the cooler coastal nights!

It’s sunny weather for most of the year in this part of Italy. Summer months like July average highs of 85°F and lows of 70°C, which makes it a great time for lying on the beach and exploring the beautiful islands just off the coast.

However, during the cooler months like January, you can expect highs of 50°F and lows of 42°F. There’s a lot of walking required during an Amalfi Coast tour, so some prefer to visit when the temperatures are lower.

Waking the Amalfi coast - 7 days

Great trip. Stunning scenery, good leader Stephano and hotel 2 Towers in Bomerano Harder hiking than some had figured on but bus back to hotel near the end often feasible. Exodus were good to deal with throughout

Please beware of Exodus. If not mandatory choose other options. They do not know how to handle a customer. In fact their driver took extra money from me for petrol and they didn't returned my money even after hundred followups.

I travelled with Exodus Travels and had the most amazing time. The organisation was excellent and the guides were brilliant and very knowledgeable. 4 days of walking. Most strenuous day was up to Dead Woman's Pass. Spectacular scenery all along the Trail. Highly recommended, if you are a walker.

Havw just returned from namibia with Exodus who as far as im cobcerned did not deliver the goods. They would not send me an itinerary of my holiday only a generic one. The tour leader was no leader at all. He gave us no commentaries as we went along even reluctant to give the next day plans. The campsites didnt necessarily have water electricity or locks on the toilet doors. We had been told by exodus that we could get our drinking water from the truck but the one thing we were told was that that was not going to happen. Our last camping night some people had a slip of paper telling them what time they would be picked up for their flight but from the wrong hotel. A man that happened to be on our flight had our information be it from the wrong hotel. There was a refusal to give us our own slip of paper with our info on and a refusal to get the paperwork corrected to the right hotel. As the tour leader was not going to be there the next day had there been a problem there was no one there to sort it out. Very disconcerting. 12 people on the trip. 12 worried unhappy people.

Flew via BA to Naples Italy & Exodus rep meet those of us on the same flight & coached to Agerola region & approx 800m above Amalfi to our family run hotel called 2 Torri. The team leader Ms Vania meet all 16 of us & briefed the walking tour for the week. From the next day thru to following Sat 1st Sept, we embarked on the most amazing walks & stunning coastline & mountain of all our lives. I will give a brief outline & before I do can say, “I recommend this walk to all who have a modicum of fitness as you will be blown away with the warmth, friendliness & hospitality in both hotel staff, the guide team leader in our case Ms Vania.from day 2 walked into village square & followed tracks up the jagged mountain paths with spectacular coastline views incl that of island of Capri & endless deep blue sea with far off distant boats leaving white streaks of wash behind them. Day 3 mule track & steps down to Amalfi all along stunned by the cracks in the shore line exposing coastal retreats close to the blue sea. Day 4, coached to Naples visited Pompeii & mount Vesuvius both amazing places. Pompeii a UNESCO world heritage site where you can see once a very large thriving city preserved remains from the road with its large cobbles & three larger ones for Romans to walk across the open road. Vesuvius open volcanic crater wher you the tour of you pay can take you to walk the whole length of it its outer narrow edge. Day 5, walk from hotel to Revello that to all of us was outstanding scenery & gardens inspired by an Englishman with fantastic coastline views plus gorgeous up market yet expensive shops selling Morano glass & ceramics. Walks continued downhill over lots of steps thru shaded paths past waterfalls lemon groves & disused paper mills. Day 6, free day if you wanted arrange Capri visit or take time to relax, some went to Capri & said it was everything they expected beautiful yet expensive, while others lazed at hotel around swimming pool after 3days of brilliant walks. Day 7, walk of the gods to Positano & the most amazing coastline Mediterranean panoramic views & ragged cliffs undulating hills passing Shepard huts built into the hill side. Positano another spectacular beach front resort with its two separated beaches by rocky hillside outcrop. These vertical towns clinging to the rock faces overlooking blue seas with there boutiques, boats restaurants & home made ice cream. Plus each day returning to the hotel experiencing on two evening cooking lessons on how to make pasta & amazing desert also another evening pizza chef teaching as he made the base tossing it into the air & stretching it into circle. I can highly recommend to all & anyone this trip is a life long memory maker that you will never forget through the people you meet, hotel staff & not forgetting the wonderful team leader who organised & was part of the group make it very special. Go any try this holiday : Peter xx

Amalfi Coast walking holiday, Exodus – review

Mountainous view on the Amalfi Coast

Reviewed: Amalfi Coast walking holiday with Exodus

The Amalfi Coast is most often visited for sightseeing and seaside holidays. But keen walkers are also attracted by the footpaths high above the dramatic coastline, particularly the high-level ‘Path of the Gods’. Several firms operate walking holidays in the area, including UK-based Exodus, who have been running an organised holiday at this location for years.

I travelled to the Amalfi Coast on a week-long Exodus walking holiday at the end of August/beginning of September. Accommodation was in the unassuming Hotel Le Due Torri in Bomerano. Bomerano is a sprawling agricultural village on a plateau in the mountainous upland of the Sorrentine peninsula, with a bus service downhill into Amalfi.

I booked my travel around six months in advance. Exodus sometimes offer discounts, so it is worth hunting around for special offers. My price included British Airways flights and a single room supplement. I communicated with Exodus staff by telephone and email, and found the customer service was generally helpful. I was misinformed, though, about whether I could check in online for my flight, and next time I would book my own flights separately, in order to have more control over the arrangements.

The holiday

Exodus had nominated a particular BA flight into Naples, and their guides collected us at the chaotic, baking hot Capodichino Airport in Naples. There were two groups staying at the hotel, my own walking group, and a much smaller group who were on a sightseeing week. We climbed on to a coach – old fashioned but with blissfully welcome air-conditioning.

I had chosen a ‘solo departures’ date hoping (although Exodus do not guarantee this) that there would be other solo travellers on the trip. This was the case, although there were also a foursome and two couples. The majority of the 16-strong walking party were British, with a small assortment of other nationalities. Many had travelled with Exodus before.

After the heat and stress of the journey, we were happy to begin the holiday by collapsing onto chairs on the hotel terrace and enjoying a glass of local wine while our cases were taken to our bedrooms.

Our walking guide was Albert, a very experienced leader, who had spent months in Bomerano leading these walks. His local contacts and knowledge were an important element of the holiday.

Accommodation: Hotel Le Due Torri, Bomerano

Hotel Le Due Torri is a typically Italian family-run off-the-beaten-track hotel. The slick establishments of the Amalfi Coast are only a short drive away, but up in Bomerano the old people sit out on the lawn with their dog running around their feet, and cockerels crow outside at ungodly hours. Bedrooms were mostly in an annexe behind the hotel’s modern main building. I was lucky and was allocated a double room with a balcony; some of the other solo travellers had small singles. Although there was a rather mysterious electric fan unit, it did not emit cool air like an air-conditioning unit and at times the room was uncomfortably hot. During the week I came to be hugely grateful for the washing line on my balcony, as I hand-washed sweat-drenched clothes each evening.

Meals were convivial affairs served at a long table in the hotel’s large dining room. A vegetarian option was available on request. The meals were simple and enjoyable, based around local produce, much of it from Bomerano itself. Six evening meals were included in the holiday’s price; wine and some packed lunches were optional, reasonably-priced, and tallied up at the end of the week. The hotel is used to its Exodus guests and puts on a couple of entertaining cooking demonstrations in the kitchen.

Our week included four walking days, a sightseeing day and a free day. Typically our hikes started after breakfast and we arrived at our destination in the early afternoon.

This holiday involved a lot of descent and some ascent, much of it on rough steps, so it was demanding on the knees. In preparation I’d tried to maximise step-climbing in the weeks beforehand – avoiding the lift and taking unnecessary detours up flights of stairs – and been on a hilly cliff walk. Unless you’re very fit, I’d recommend some preparation of this kind. In the heat of August in Campania, a steep, short ascent on our first morning was already enough to defeat one walker and stretch the rest of us.

Apart from that very first test, I didn’t find the walking too demanding; I thought it was challenging to just the right degree. Since our hiking mostly started from high up, in or near Bomerano, we were generally descending or contouring along the coast. Long descents of staircases into Amalfi and Positano made a very scenic workout.

The scenery is what really makes this holiday superlative. Almost every moment of every walk offered a new and beautiful perspective on this dramatic coastline: woodland; sea; clustered villages; ruined cottages; a church tower; a cliff. And seeing the coastline from these high vantage points on footpaths feels very special. The famous Walk of the Gods and the paths near villages aren’t hard to navigate for independent travellers, but some of the paths we used would have been difficult without a guide – Albert even went ahead with a machete on one overgrown stretch.

I loved seeing the agriculture of the coast close up, from the long orange tomatoes to giant squashes, grapes and lemons, grown on ancient terraces and on any scrap of dusty ground around local houses. On a woodland path we were warned to leap aside on a shout of ‘Mule!’ – we did see two of these being laden with timber, although luckily we never experienced them charging along the path.

There were many highlights of the coastal walking – the wide open views and panoramic drops to the sea were breathtaking. Thanks to the marvels of modern technology I uploaded one photograph from our first day’s picnic spot: Positano from the mountains . One magical moment was when Albert ushered us through a locked gate into a gorge filled with running water, green moss and butterflies; it was like being transported to another continent.

Three of the walks finished at sea level – twice in Amalfi and once in Positano – and several of us enjoyed time on the beach. We were able to pay a reduced rate at a beach lido to use changing rooms, showers and sunbeds – an optional and very civilised way to cool off after the sweaty walking. From Positano we caught a ferry back to Amalfi, admiring yet another view of the coastline we had travelled on foot.

The trip back to the hotel after these walks was made by bus from Amalfi. The 40-minute journey was notable for the terrifying hairpin beds for which the Amalfi Coast is famous – exciting the first time, inspiring travel-sickness on subsequent occasions. As a sufferer from travel-sickness, this wasn’t ideal – like the swinging corners on the drive from Naples – but that was a price to pay for the holiday.

Sightseeing and free time

We had time to explore the little towns after our walks, and also a free day to spend as we wished. I took the public bus down to Amalfi and another up to Ravello , where I revisited the famous gardens, lunched with a new friend on one of Ravello’s hotel terraces, and then walked quickly down picturesque paths to Minori (more steps!), where I was just in time to catch a ferry to Amalfi. After watching a colourful folklore procession in Amalfi I had some dinner and caught a bus back up to Bomerano.

As well as coastal walking and one free day, the holiday also included a trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius. I opted out of the guided tour of Pompeii, as I’d visited before, and had a very enjoyable time wandering around the back streets of the ancient town on my own and seeking out frescoes, before meeting up with the rest of the group. Vesuvius, our next port of call, is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and walking around the rim of its crater was the last thing I would have expected to find myself doing. But I did, even joining the small group who left the main tourist path and made the complete circuit with a local guide – a very exposed walk on loose terrain, which was nearly too much for my nerves. I felt a great sense of achievement (and relief) as I drank a beaker of local Lacryma Christi wine from a plastic beaker at a kiosk overlooking the crater where we rejoined our companions. Who would have thought this would be one of my most memorable moments of the year?

exodus tours amalfi coast

I was initially uncertain about this holiday – I’m an independent traveller, and being trapped with 15 strangers following someone else’s itinerary was a challenging concept. But walking with a guide is a great way to explore these paths without the worries or practical difficulties of hiking alone. Walkers are generally congenial people, so the company was also pleasant. Hiking along the more remote paths, seeing hidden sights, and experiences like the descent to Amalfi past a chain of abandoned paper mills gave a much more intimate acquaintance with the Amalfi Coast than a standard resort holiday. August is really a bit too hot for this kind of endeavour, but despite the constant heat and sweat, my strongest memories are of the views, the blue sky and sea, the butterflies and the fresh air and of the high slopes. There really can’t be many one-centre walking weeks where you could enjoy such consistently marvellous and changing scenery. Combined with the food, the Italian warmth and the excursions, it is no wonder that this Exodus holiday has such high ratings from past travellers.

The trip was well-organised and I thought it was quite good value for money. One or two meals weren’t included (the trip notes make this clear) and a few optional activities were at extra expense – these included the guided tour of Pompeii, the extended walk on Vesuvius and admittance to beach establishments. The hotel was good at providing practical advice and also organising transport and assistance – on the free day some members of our group paid for a trip to the Roman ruins of Herculaneum. I was disappointed that one included activity – a mozzarella-making demonstration – was cancelled.

Aside from the heat, the only problem with our trip was the differing abilities and walking pace of participants. As the group only had one walking leader, we had some frustrating periods on two walks where the front-runners were forced to wait extreme lengths of time, while Albert returned to aid someone at the back who was struggling. Two leaders would have been a help in this situation. Once the unfortunate invalid had been helped into a taxi (and I believe, discouraged from attempting future walks) the rest of the hiking went much more smoothly, with the range in walking speed no more than one might expect and easily accommodated.

I returned from the holiday feeling energised – and regretful to be leaving. Spending several hours of each day out in the sunshine, walking and breathing in fresh air, resulted in a great sense of well-being and also increased confidence in my fitness.

Prepare for the steep ups and downs. And long flights of steps. Some of our group felt that the trip was tougher than Exodus’s rating suggested – I think this was partly due to the heat. I don’t normally have time for day-long walks, nor do I exercise, but I did attempt a little preparation for this trip, as described above, and I found the walking quite manageable.

Long trousers are a good idea for overgrown sections of path, and a hat and sunblock are pretty essential for summer trips. If you’re planning on visiting the beach, take some lightweight, minimal beach stuff along – a thin trekking towel will save the cost of hiring a beach towel, and flip-flops are a good idea for the pebble beaches. If you like walking with a stick, you may find one helpful; personally I find them a bother and would rather have my hands free. Terrain varies from paved paths to scree to short stretches of scrambling over rock. I wore a strong pair of leather walking boots, and also a lightweight semi-open pair of North Face shoes; the latter were cooler in the heat but I did have to empty grit out on a regular basis. Exodus provide detailed trip notes for their holidays; read this carefully to confirm the holiday is right for you. And whatever you do, don’t forget a camera for those views.

Responsible Travel

Tourism can be a real help to local communities, providing income, positive cultural exchanges and a financial incentive to protect their natural environment. Ours is a 'total approach' to responsible tourism, covering everything from the way we plan and operate our trips to the practices of Exodus as a company.

On this trip, we will spend the nights in the family-run Hotel Le Due Torri in Agerola, a relatively unknown area of Amalfi, bringing income to an area that does not usually benefit from tourism. The hotel recently installed solar panels which provides hot water for their rooms and all food provided are homemade, using locally produced and sourced goods where possible. On one of the evenings before dinner, clients have the opportunity to learn from their hosts how to prepare a traditional Neapolitan pizza.

This trip is packed with exciting activities for the whole family which really highlights the best natural and cultural treasures of the Amalfi Coast. Children have the opportunity to showcase their creativity through a series of activities such as pottery painting in a local artisan’s ‘bottega’ and experimenting the ancient way of paper making in Amalfi. Such activities are also great to foster interaction with locals. Our money spent at various historical sites goes towards the maintenance of these places and the wages of those working there.

In March 2019, Exodus Travels launched the  Exodus Travels Foundation  where we support initiatives all around the world. But it cannot exist without travellers who care. Get involved or learn more about what Responsible Travel means to Exodus  here …

Those on group flights fly to Naples, where they will be met by their tour leader on arrival. A transfer of approximately 1hr 20min takes us to Hotel Due Torri, our base for the week in the village of Bomerano, on the Agerola plains above the Amalfi Coast. Enjoy a warm welcome from our hosts, the Acampora family, before settling in.

Please note: It is possible the order of the itinerary will be changed to ensure the best possible conditions for each activity during the trip. All listed activities and services will be included. Your leader will inform you of any changes locally after assessing conditions.

This trip starts in the village of Bomerano, on the Agerola plains above the Amalfi Coast. Enjoy a warm welcome from our local hosts, the Acampora family, before settling in.

If you wish to tailor your journey by adding extra nights, speak with your sales representative for detailed information on available pre-tour, post-tour and extension packages.

Meals included: Dinner

After a 30-minute private transfer to Amalfi, we take the boat along the coast to Positano, a near vertical town of colourful buildings reached by a network of ancient paths and tracks. On the journey, we enjoy beautiful, classic views of the Amalfi Coast and once in Positano we start exploring this picturesque town, strolling among the winding streets. There is time to visit the beautiful cathedral, enjoy a swim in the blue sea or visit the boutiques for great shopping opportunities. We also enjoy an optional lunch in a pizzeria and a refreshing Italian gelato before returning in the late afternoon to Bomerano by boat and minibus.

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner

Today we descend from the Agerola hills and take a transfer (approximately 45 minutes) to Pompeii, once a thriving port town until the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 CE, during which the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for 1,700 years, Pompeii is now a Unesco World Heritage site as the perfectly preserved remains give us an amazing insight into life in a Roman city, complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes – some of which still have walls adorned with detailed frescoes. You may take time to explore the site independently but we recommend opting for a detailed tour accompanied by a local guide, which can be hired locally for approximately €10 per person depending on the group size.

In the afternoon, we head to the famous volcano that looms over Naples, Mount Vesuvius. The vehicle will take you to an altitude of approximately 3,280ft (1,000m) and from there to the crater you will need to ascend on a path which is approximately 490ft (150m) long and quite steep in places. A local guide will then take you on a short walk along the crater rim, while explaining the fascinating history of Vesuvius and its volcanic activity. We return to the hotel by bus in the late afternoon.

Please note, during adverse weather conditions, such as fog, storms or heavy rain, the local authorities may deicide to restrict or prevent access to Vesuvius. In the event this inclusion cannot be offered on your departure, we will take you to Herculaneum to visit its perfectly preserved remains and virtual museum, which give an amazing insight into the life of an ancient Roman city.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, we take a short transfer to visit a cheese producer in Agerola, where we can sample delicious freshly made mozzarella, prepared in front of us by hand following a centuries-old recipe. We may also have time to visit a small farm owned by the same family of cheesemakers.

We then depart for a visit to Amalfi, which was popular with the British upper classes in Edwardian times. The large duomo (cathedral) dominates the town with its brightly coloured tiles so typical of the region. We have a few hours to explore the wonderful historic centre and alleys before taking an interesting tour of the Paper Museum, which celebrates the long-established paper-making tradition in Amalfi. The guide will explain how the Amalfi paper was once made and you can experiment yourself, using ancient paper-making machines. We then make our way back to the hotel for a pizza-making class before dinner.

Today is free to relax by the hotel pool or at one of the local beaches. Alternatively, you could opt to take a day trip to Capri and explore the island on foot, by boat and chairlift to visit the network of small pedestrian streets, the remains of the Roman Villa Jovis, and the Faraglioni (rock stacks) and Blue Grotto. Another option is to spend the day in Ravello, a peaceful town high on the cliffs above Amalfi, famous for its gardens and impressive cathedral. Your tour leader will not always join these optional activities but will help you to arrange transport locally.

Meals included: Breakfast

The Amalfi Coast is also renowned for its colourful ceramics and this morning we visit a local artisan’s bottega , where the kids can paint a pottery souvenir. Later, we set off along a short section of one of the finest walks in the world: the Path of the Gods. The route follows the contours of the land with amazing views of the Amalfi coastline far below. In season, the meadows are carpeted with flowers and the coastal waters teem with cruisers and pleasure boats. Please note, the terrain can be rocky or uneven at times and there are parts that are a little exposed and therefore not suitable for severe vertigo sufferers. After a barbecue lunch (included, weather permitting) we return to the hotel on foot.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

After a scenic 30-minute ride down to Amalfi, we enjoy a half-day kayak along the Amalfi Coast. This is the perfect finale for the trip as it allows us to explore the coastline from the most spectacular angle: in the midst of the sparkling blue sea. After a short introductory lesson on how to kayak and safety at sea, we set off, led by an experienced local guide, to the west towards Runghetiello Grotto. The route will take us along the finest Amalfi beaches, under natural rock arches and into sea caves, giving us the opportunity to admire the old watch towers that dot the entire length of this coast. Those not wishing to participate can wait for the rest of the group at the lovely beach where the activity starts. Please note that kayaking is normally possible only between the months of May and September. At other times of the year or in the event of bad weather and rough sea conditions, your leader will organise an alternative activity such as a memorable day trip to Sorrento or Capri. We return to the hotel in the evening and enjoy a delicious farewell group dinner.

The adventure ends after breakfast and we begin our return journey home. Take the transfer to Naples Airport in time for the group flight.

The adventure ends after breakfast. We say a fond farewell to the hotel, which may feel a bit like a second home by now, and begin our return journey home.

Amalfi Coast: Pompeii & Pizza Family Holiday

Essential Info

Is this trip for you.

This trip is graded Activity Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate). For more on our trip gradings, visit our Activity Level Guidelines page .

It is designed for ages 9 to 12 but is also suitable for ages five to eight or 13 to 16 (depending on the departure date). Our goal is to have similarly aged children on each departure, which allows the leader to better adapt the pace of the trip as required.

Our Family Activity Levels are aimed at children in the primary or ‘Designed for’ age group. We are confident it is also suitable for those in the ‘Also for’ age range; however, if your child is in this secondary category they may find it either a little easier or tougher. Please see the Family Activity Levels on our website for further information.

When grading our trips, we consider multiple factors: the pace, how busy an itinerary is, and the level of activity involved. Then there’s the amount of time a family will spend travelling. The weather is an important factor too.

This holiday aims to show you the best parts of the Amalfi Coast using a mixture of private buses, boats and sightseeing on foot. Though there is no strenuous physical activity involved, some days will be busy and in summer the heat and humidity can be tiring. Travel time is kept to a minimum wherever possible (maximum two hours on the bus per day) and the private vehicles used are comfortable and have air conditioning.

On most days, you will be back at the hotel at the end of the afternoon, with a couple of free hours before dinner to rest or enjoy the hotel pool. There is also one free day and leisure time at the beach included.

There are two walks included in the trip. During the visit to Mount Vesuvius, the vehicle will take you to an altitude of approximately 3,280ft (1,000m); from there to the crater, you will need to ascend on a path which is approximately 490ft (150m) long and quite steep in places. Along the Path of the Gods, you will be walking on a marked path; however, the terrain can be rocky or uneven at times and there are parts that are a little exposed, therefore not suitable for severe vertigo sufferers. This walk usually takes around 90 minutes.

The kayaking excursion will last approximately four hours including stops. Each minor should be accompanied by one adult in a double kayak. No previous experience is necessary, but participants must be able to swim. Please note that kayaking is normally possible only between the months of May and September. Furthermore, please note that due to safety reasons in the event of rough sea conditions at any time of the year, the activity will not take place. Where this is the case, your guide will arrange an alternative trip to the island of Capri or to the coastal town of Sorrento.

Please be prepared for some drives on winding coastal roads throughout the trip.

In unexpected weather conditions, the boat journeys may be replaced with minibuses.

The family-run accommodation is comfortable with air conditioning and private bathrooms and a small outdoor pool (seasonal). See the relevant section in the Trip Notes for further details.

Please note, there is high demand for our Amalfi tours. As such, it’s likely there will be more than one Exodus group at the Hotel Due Torri. The hotel is also open to non-Exodus guests. Our team of leaders are well used to this and any additional groups are either on a different tour or follow an alternative itinerary. This includes the same excursions but taken in a different order, usually reverse.

It is also worth noting that during the high season, usually May to September, popular towns along the Amalfi coast such as Positano, Amalfi itself and the island of Capri, can be quite busy.

Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as not suitable for full wheelchair users, but it may be suitable for other persons of reduced mobility. Please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition.

Included packed lunches usually consist of a sandwich filled with a choice of cold meats, tuna, or local cheeses.

All evening meals are taken in the hotel, where the standard is excellent and the chef takes great pride in showcasing the best of regional foods, including dishes such as  scialatielli all’amalfitana  (homemade pasta with seafood) and  branzino all’acqua pazza  (sea bass in crazy water). Dinners usually consist of four courses, commencing with antipasti, followed by soup and/or pasta, a main meat dish with salad or vegetables, and dessert.

On certain evenings, there is the opportunity to learn how to make Neapolitan pizza. Please note, drinks are not included with meals but available to purchase.

Several dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free, are also well catered for. Please advise us of any dietary requirement on booking.

Southern Italy, in common with a lot of the Mediterranean, possesses a hot, dry climate in summer, with cooler but slightly damper spring and autumn periods, and at coastal levels mild, damp winters. Rainfall is expected in winter months with an average of one day in three affected.  It is particularly important to note the high temperatures during summer, which can often reach 35C (95F) by the coast. Unseasonable cold spells are possible at any time of year, during which you will need warm clothes, especially in the hills up in Bomerano where evening temperatures can be lower than expected. It is important to be equipped for cooler weather in early spring, late autumn and winter.

Hotel Due Torri, a family-run three-star albergo in Bomerano

Hotel Due Torri from outside the main entrance

We spend seven nights at Hotel Due Torri, a mid-sized hotel run by the welcoming Acampora family, who turn out authentic Campanian dishes in the restaurant and put on a show with their fun pizza-making demonstrations.

It sits in Bomerano, a peaceful village that forms part of the Agerola municipality, up in the hills and away from the often-bustling Amalfi Coast.

Being higher up, the hotel benefits from cooler nights, although beaches are not too far away. There is a small heated outdoor pool (usually open from mid-April to mid-October) and energy is generated by a solar panel system.

The 41 rooms vary in style and size and are spread across two main buildings and two cosy apartments a short walk from the main hotel. A limited number of superior rooms, which include a hot tub, power shower and fridge, are also available for a supplement payable before departure. Please ask your sales representative for further information.

  • Hydromassage pool for refreshing post-hike dips
  • Buzzy restaurant serving local dishes
  • Limited number of superior rooms available with hot tub

Worth knowing

  • Pool opening dates are subject to local weather conditions and pool maintenance requirements; cooler months may not be suitable for swimming
  • When the hotel is full, you might still be able to join the trip on your preferred date by staying at an alternative accommodation just a short walk from the main hotel. You will be provided with full details upon booking and have full access to all the Due Torri facilities, including the pool and restaurant.
  • A kettle is available in the rooms. Please request tea/coffee bags at reception

Pompei and Amalfi Coast

A great trip well organised. On the family trip, but with a teenager she was a little board. Very suitable for young children. Felt the walk was too short for adults around Vesuvius crater, so that was disappointing. Capri was spectacular, but again the tour around the island was very short, so you felt you didn’t full see the caves.

Most Inspirational Moment

Pompei was sensational. So was Capri

Thoughts on Group Leader

I thought he was superb for adults, but not necessarily for kids. Very helpful and sociable

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check carefully. Not a lot for teenagers. I chose the trip specifically for that reason, but nothing for them to do. The adult trip, walking, seem to have a more adventurous trip. This family trip is for younger children, my daughter, age 14, didn't enjoy it much. Make sure there are lots of other travellers the same age, otherwise they will be bored in the evenings, nothing to do in the village

Fantastic family experience

I can’t fault this trip. An excellent balance of guided tours and beach time/down time. I have to say that our guide Eduardo was a gem. Exodus are extremely fortunate to have him working for them. He is a gold mine of knowledge, full of conversation and great with the kids. I am sure that our experience and access to places you would never be able to reach are down to him. The pizza making was brilliant and the kids even joined the chef to cook our dinner one night! Thank you Exodus but more so thank you Eduardo.

Lunch in an old farmhouse on the walk of the Gods. Only accessible by foot or mule. Good food, good wine, good company... All overlooking Positano and the turquoise sea from 700metres!

Amazing. He made the trip.

Trying to entertain an energetic 11 year old and their mum is no easy task but this holiday did exactly that! A perfect blend of culture and activity along with an experienced tour guide on what level of information to give, what pace to go and keep the interest of all ages.

We loved it! Molto Beno

Climbing Mount Vesuvius

Eduardo was just great. You can tell he is very experienced and really made the holiday!

Its always a little cooler on climbing the mountains so make sure that you pack a jumper/coat for that day!

The only thing that I would add is that ideally it would be great if the coffee machine was one for when you got back from day trips!

Perfect pizza, heavenly Herculaneum

Brilliant planning meant that every day kept the kids occupied, entertained and interested. We loved Herculaneum, Pompeii and all the little towns. The walk of the gods was one of my favorite bits, which was a surprise to me. The scenery and lunch that day was phenomenal! The hotel was lovely – small clean and friendly. Excellent food and the kids loved the pool. Well worth the money.

Seeing Herculaneum was great - we wandered around looking at the street signs etc. The skeletons were very moving. We hired a pedaling and the kids all got to swim 'in the deep sea' which was very exciting for them.

Group leader was excellent- knowledgeable, friendly, helpful. Felt like a good friend by the end of the trip.

Take a hat and sunglasses and refillable water bottle. Pompeii doesn't let large bags in so take a small bag for your sandwiches etc

Great trip, would like to do the walking tour!

October on the Amalfi coast

This was our first trip with Exodus and it didn’t disappoint, the Amalfi coast was stunning and our guide Paul together with the staff at 2 Torres were fantastic. Our son 7 loved the whole experience.

The best part for all of us was the walk of the gods, we loved the views and the lunch provided in the small rustic building was really great. Our son loved playing with the other children on as he put it getting up to mischief!

Our group leader Paul was really helpful and all the kids loved talking with him and asking about the different places. He was very flexible in arranging things to do on the free day and made time to talk with all members of the party.

Amazing, brilliant holiday-certainly one of the best we’ve enjoyed. Great experiences and company in well run family hotel .

The walk of the Gods. Looking down on beautiful Amalfi coast. " Ancient mule tracks wind through lemon groves and gorges. Truly the path of the Gods. "

Our leader, Eduardo, was key to the success of our holiday. He was a superb organiser, remarkably good at interesting and amusing children and keeping everyone involved and happy. We cannot praise him enough.

Amalfi Coast Pompeii Pizza

The hotel was in the perfect location for exploring the Amalfi Coast, the hotel was modern and clean and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent, fresh and locally produced.

Going up the chair lift on the isle of Capri to see the views from the top. The visit to Pompeii was amazing and the walk with the gods had breathtaking views.

Eduardo was excellent, he made the holiday wonderful. He organised everything really well and catered for everyone's needs. I was able to completely unwind and relax as he took care of everything. We managed to see so much which we would have not been able to do on our own. He took us to see the most amazing views, this will certainly be a holiday to remember.

Be prepared for lots of walking, but so worth it when you get there.

We would definitely come back, loved this holiday.

A fabulous welcome at the family run 2Torri Hotel. Staff clearly very happy in their work. Great balance of adventures and relaxing time. Beautiful location in local Italian village with easy access to site seeing .

Edwardo! Every day had it's highs. Loved Pompeii and Vesuvius all in one day. Really brought history alive.

Perfect family holiday

A fantastic family holiday, with a full, well thought through itinerary that was great for both the kids and the parents. The hotel location is perfect and the extra breeze on the top of the mountains is ideal for keeping a bit cooler in the evenings. Good food, and a great group of families.

The surprise lunch location on one of the days (I won't spoil it for others!). The kids cooking evenings with the chefs were especially entertaining.

Eduardo was a brilliant leader who organised everything to perfection and had the children eating out of the palm of his hand and hanging on his every word. His enthusiasm and local knowledge meant we all could relax and enjoy the activities, which were all well planned and well paced. The ideal group leader, in fact!

The trip notes covered all we needed to know.

We will certainly be looking a further holidays with Exodus in future years.

A lovely holiday. A week of sunshine in late October. Great views, great food, fantastic historical and cultural sites.

Climbing to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius. Whilst a simple climb for many, I am visually impaired, so this was a great challenge for me. Our Leader, Suzie, was very supportive, knowing when to offer assistance and when to retreat. Fantastic views from the crater edge and what a buzz for the achievement.

Suzie was informative, approachable and clearly loved the area she was guiding us through.

A good pair of boots for Mt. Vesuvius and The Walk of the Gods.

Fantastic hotel with very friendly staff, great food.

Highlights of the Amalfi Coast

Highlights of the Amalfi Coast

Itinerary Expand All

Day 1: start bomerano (agerola).

This trip starts in Bomerano – a tiny village on the west side of the Agerola Valley, 1hr 20m south of Naples . Our hosts for the week are Giovanni and Nicola Acampora, the charming owners of Hotel Due Torri. Surrounded by vineyards and orchards, their family-run property has a pool and fabulous views of the Lattari mountains; an ideal spot to escape the crowds.

We'll rendezvous at the hotel in time for dinner and a welcome briefing. Please note: It is possible the order of the itinerary will be changed to ensure the best possible conditions for each activity during the trip. All listed activities and services will be included. Your leader will inform you of any changes locally after assessing conditions. If you are willing to tailor your journey adding extra nights, speak with your Sales Consultant for detailed information on available pre-tour, post-tour and extension packages (D).

Day 2: Sightseeing in Amalfi and picture-perfect Positano

Leaving the Agerola plain, we descend by private bus to Amalfi, the oldest maritime republic in Italy. Quintessentially Mediterranean, Amalfi's townscape is a cluster of little white houses and buildings, narrow alleyways and shady porticoes, dominated by the large cathedral with its brightly coloured tiles typical of the region. We spend the morning sightseeing, relaxing in one of the sun-filled piazzas, or visiting the interesting paper museum (optional).

Later, we continue by fast boat (approximately 20 minutes) to Positano . En route, we enjoy the enchanting views of the sheer cliffs and rugged shoreline dotted with small beaches that have drawn people to this stunning coast for centuries. There is no better way of approaching Positano for the first time than from the sea, as the contrast of this near-vertical town of colourful buildings against the verdant cliffs and blue waters will leave you mesmerised.

We have a few hours to explore this chic, picture-perfect village on foot before we return to our hotel in the late afternoon by boat and private bus. During winter departures (November to February) the following changes are made to the itinerary; A private transfer will be used instead of a boat from Positano to Amalfi (B/D).

Day 3: Visit the legendary archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii

It's a busy day today as we travel to the Bay of Naples by private bus (approximately one hour), where we join local guides to tour two of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, Herculaneum and Pompeii . Both towns and their people got buried under the ash and magma of Mount Vesuvius in the 79 CE eruption, but they were only rediscovered through excavations in the 18th century.

The eruption affected the sites in different ways: while Pompeii is home to a more extensive collection of Roman homes, stores and bathhouses (plus the iconic plaster bodies), the ruins, frescos and recently discovered 300 skeletons along the seashore at Herculaneum are much better preserved. We return to the hotel late afternoon (approximately one hour) to enjoy a delicious dinner and cooking demonstration (B/D).

Day 4: Walk part of the divine Path of the Gods

Today we walk a section of one of the finest trails in the world. From our doorstep, it's a short stroll through the quiet village of Bomerano. Here we'll drop into a local cheesemaker to see how the delicious local mozzarella is made. And, yes, we'll taste some. We then join the Path of the Gods , which runs all the way to Positano. Luckily, having already visited Positano earlier this week, we can skip the hard part and the 1,700 steps downtown, and take a linear walk of 4km instead, offering some equally fantastic coastal views along the way.

Please be aware that some parts of the trail are rocky and there are frequent ups and downs, which can be a little hard on the knees. With breaks for water and snacks, this short hike is of Level 2/3 (Moderate) difficulty but doable for all those in good fitness, and the challenge will no doubt be repaid by the magnificent views. A rewarding regional lunch awaits you back at the hotel (B/L/D).

Day 5: Free day to relax, visit Sorrento or Naples

How will you spend a free day on the Amalfi Coast? We recommend visiting Sorrento for a seafood lunch and sweeping views over the Bay of Naples. Pedestrian lanes, little boutiques, limoncello shops, and restaurants make it an enjoyable place to spend a day at leisure. Alternatively head to Naples, the capital of the Campania region. A trip up the slopes of Mount Vesuvius to peer into the crater, followed by a wine tasting at a renowned local winery right below the majestic volcano may also be possible.

Please note that whilst there is no need to book the excursions to Sorrento and Naples prior to departure (your leader will help arrange them locally), securing tickets for the Vesuvius cannot be guaranteed as these may sell out in advance, especially in the high season. The most common option is to wait until you are on tour as your leader will be able to assist you with booking and private transfer arrangements. Should other travellers in your group be willing to join the excursion, a shared and more convenient transfer will be organised for you.

Alternatively, you may opt to pre-book entrance tickets online independently. However, be aware that advanced online purchase means being assigned a specific time slot to visit the volcano and that you will have to arrange your own private transportation, which can be costly. Furthermore, weather conditions or other factors may impact the standard order of the itinerary and that any unused tickets as a result of schedule changes are not refundable. Please note, all tours for your free day are subject to availability and prices are dependent on the number of people joining (B).

Day 6: Boat to Capri; free afternoon to explore the island

We leave the hotel after breakfast and take the bus down to Amalfi and board the boat to Capri . The journey along the Amalfi Coast is spectacular with small coves and bays of azure water overlooked by towering cliffs. The time spent on Capri is unguided and you are free to explore independently. Your tour leader might recommend avoiding the hassle of public transport on the island and make the most of your time by arranging an excursion by private bus and cable car (optional, payable locally).

A beautiful walk will take you up to Capri town and along a network of small pedestrianised streets to visit the remains of Villa Jovis, the former home of the fearsome Roman emperor Tiberius. A walk around the spectacular coastline is recommended and allows you to see a natural rock arch and the Faraglioni – rock stacks that stick vertically out of the sea. There is also time to peruse the boutique shops before returning by boat and bus to our hotel (B/D).

Day 7: Sightseeing in elegant Ravello; visit Villa Cimbrone

Today we visit the romantic hilltop town of Ravello for some of the best views of the Amalfi coastline. Ravello also has a grand cathedral but Villa Cimbrone (visit included) and Villa Rufolo (optional) are the real gems of the town. Set amid elegant gardens, the villa balconies stand at the edge of the cliffs offering stunning views described by French author André Gide as 'closer to the sky than the seashore'. There is time to wander, enjoy a coffee and soak up the atmosphere before we return to the cooler climes of Bomerano in the afternoon. The remainder of the day is free for relaxation, before a farewell dinner in the evening (B/D).

Day 8: End Bomerano (Agerola)

We have explored one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the world. Now it's time to make our way home, but not before one last breakfast at Hotel Due Torri, which may feel like a second home by now. If your flight leaves later this evening, you're welcome to make use of the hotel facilities after check-out and enjoy a lunch (optional, payable locally) here. Alternatively, speak to your leader for recommendations on what to do in the village (B).
