1. Fontainhas - The Old Latin Quarters of Goa

Fontainhas - Instagrammable Spots in Goa

Fontainhas is a colourful neighbourhood in Panaji city. In fact, it is the old Latin quarter where the Portuguese rulers were once settled. Once upon a time, Old Goa used to be the capital city of Goa. An epidemic drove the rules away from Old Goa and brought them to Panaji city. It's here in Fontainhas that an unplanned, colourful neighbourhood sprung up.

The Portuguese have left behind their legacy in the tiny lanes dotted with colourful houses and fascinating staircases. While it's possible to spend an entire day here, try to spare at least a couple of hours to explore this neighbourhood. Not only will you catch a glimpse of Portuguese architecture, but you will also change upon some great cafes and restaurants in this area. Its close proximity to Panaji city makes it the perfect destination for your next Instagram shoot!

2. Our Lady of Piety Church, Divar Island

Divar Island Church - Instagrammable Spots in Goa

Divar Island is a sleepy little island tucked away in the Mandovi River. It is located roughly 5 km from the Panaji KTC bus stand. This island has been untouched by time and the people of this island have ensured that the organisation doesn't take away the charm of the island.

To reach Divar island, get on the road to Old Goa via Ribander. After 5 km you will come across a ferry terminal near the Gene Garden restaurant. From here, a leisurely ferry ride will take you to the island. Once you reach the island, walk or ride across the empty road overlooking the open fields and a solitary village. The church, in the picture above, is located on a hillock at the end of this village. From the church, you will get a clear view of the island, Old Goa and some of Panaji city. Divar Island is one of my all-time favourite offbeat places to visit in Goa . It's not one to be missed!

3. Sunaparanta Art Gallery

Sunaparanta Art Gallery - Instagrammable Spots in Goa

Sunaparanta Art Gallery is a part of the very famous Cafe Bodega, one of the best cafes in Panjim city . The cafe/ art gallery is located in a quaint Portuguese bungalow in the plush neighborhood of Altinho, Panaji. The decor of this place automatically takes you back a few years to a more peaceful time. There's an old-world charm about this art gallery. Whether it's the subtle floral decor, or the tranquil air of the neighborhood, Sunaparanta manages to exude a whole lot of charm. Moreover, it has a wonderful cafe where you can sit back, enjoy a delicious red velvet cake and spend the afternoon dreaming of the 80's.

Note that DSLR photography requires prior permission from the management. However, you're free to click pictures from your mobile, without any hindrance.

4. Purple Martini at Sunset Point, Anjuna

Instagrammable cafes in Goa

It should come as no surprise that Goa has an abundance of Instagram worthy cafes and restaurants. Whether you're looking for a bohemian vibe or an artsy place, whether you want to experience a Portuguese bungalow or a hip joint to hang out with friends, Goa has every kind of eatery. Purple Martini is one such restaurant that has many charms. Firstly, it's located in the ever-buzzing neighbourhood of Anjuna, that too right on the beach. Secondly, you get front row seats to the most epic sunsets in Goa whilst indulging in drinks and food. Make sure to snap some pictures of this gorgeous place for the gram.

5. Eva Cafe, Anjuna

Eva cafe - One of the instagrammable cafes in Goa

Eva cafe , located in Anjuna is the perfect blend of the Greek island Santorini with bohemia. Here, you can expect whitewashed walls, lace and burlap mats, dream catchers, seashells and views of the ocean. It's the perfect place to bring along a loved one, have the gentle winds tease you and watch the sun go down together. Naturally, it's also a cafe where you can get stunning pictures of the food as well as the ocean views. It's a must-visit instagrammable cafe in Goa!

6. Parra Road aka Dear Zindagi Road

Parra - instagrammable places in Goa

There can't be an article on the most instagrammable places in Goa without mentioning Parra. This road shot to popularity after being featured in the Bollywood movie Dear Zindagi .

In order to reach here, just search for 'Parra chapel' or 'Dear Zindagi road' on google maps and you should be able to find it with ease. It's located quite close to the Anjuna neighbourhood. P.S. You can find more recommendations like this on my Instagram profile @thespicyjourney .

7. St Cajetan Church in Old Goa

St Cajetan Church Instagrammable Goa

Not only is St Cajetan Church one of the best instagrammable spots in Goa, but it is also one of the hidden gems in Goa. While it's located just a few meters from the Old Goa Church, it's hidden from plain sight and hence unknown to most people. If you're paying a visit to the Old Goa attractions , make sure to include this one in your list. Old Goa is just a short 20-minute drive away from Panjim city and thus can easily be covered in a half a day's trip.

8. Mangrove Boardwalk Panjim

Mangrove Boardwalk Panjim - Instagrammable Places in Goa

The mangrove boardwalk is another gem in the capital city of Goa, which was created as a recreational space. It's located equidistant from the Panjim bus stand as well as the vibrant neighborhood of Fontainhas. Apart from being a soothing space to relax and walk around, it gives an insight into the world of mangroves, which is quite fascinating. Visit this place while making a trip to the top Panjim attractions .

9. Cabo de Rama Beach

South Goa beaches are some of the offbeat places in Goa and the most instagrammable places in Goa

Cabo de Rama beach , located in South Goa, is one of the most beautiful instagrammable spots in Goa. This beach, located 53 km South of the Goa International Airport is one of the best South Goa beaches. Apart from being a stunning, clean beach with clear blue water, the cliff overlooking the beach as well as the Cabo de Rama fort provide you with lot of things to do here.

There are two restaurants on the Cabo cliff, with The Cape being my favourite one. While you're here, you might also want to visit the nearby Agonda and Palolem beaches.

10. Art Resort Palolem

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6IZuScje75/

Art Resort or Art Prive is a striking resort located right on Palolem beach in South Goa . While the spacious rooms overlooking the ocean are inviting enough, it's the cafe that seals the deal for me. The cafe has two sections - an open-air seating, shown in the picture above and a seating area with a roof over it. The second seating area is just as appealing as the outdoor one - complete with a wall full of exquisite art work and a breezy table setting. Not to mention that Palolem is one of the most happening places in South Goa. This cafe is a must-visit for any Instagram buff!

11. Vagator Hilltop

Vagator - Instagrammable spots in Goa

Vagator is one of the best and most popular beaches in North Goa. The Vagator area is home to some of the best restaurants, cafes, nightlife and scenery. Some of the popular attractions in Vagator are the Vagator beach, the hilltop view and Chapora Fort (which was made famous by the Bollywood movie Dil Chahta Hai ). Make sure to watch the sunset from any of these spots overlooking the ocean! Walk around the Vagator cliff to find some interesting angles in one of the most instagrammable places in Goa.

12. Reis Magos Fort

Reis Magos Fort is one of the instagrammable places in Goa

Standing proudly on the bank of the Mandovi river, Reis Magos Fort is a 16th-century fort facing Panaji city. While the fort itself isn't as big in size as you would expect it to be, it has a unique layout which is perfectly captured in photographs. Spiral stairways, stone pathways and little wooden balconies will make the perfect props for your pictures! Moreover, you will get unobstructed views of the expansive ocean and the Panaji city from the top of the fort. My favourite spot at Reis Magos Fort was the spiral staircase at the corner of two walls blanketed with greenery. The fort is located 18 km from Panaji bus stand, on the opposite bank of the Mandovi river.

13. Chandor

Chandor - one of the instagrammable places in Goa India

Chandor is a quaint town located 18 from Margao city in South Goa. This ancient city still has a laid-back old world charm to it. The best part about Chandor, though, is the Braganza House. This mansion was built by a wealthy merchant which is now open to visitors, thanks to the family who owns and runs this house. The grand ballroom (pictured above) is one of the most instagrammable places in Goa.

Visit Chandor not only for the Instagram-worthy places but also to learn more about the history of this place.

14. Sweet Water Lake

Travel Guide: Things to do in Arambol Beach, Goa, India

While Arambol beach is the most unique and beautiful beach in Goa , the sweet water lake at Arambol just cannot be overlooked. Not only is the lake super picturesque and peaceful, it is also one of the most photo-worthy spots in North Goa. If you come here early in the morning like I did, you will find it completely empty and you'll be able to take many cool pictures for Instagram here.

15. Offbeat Viewpoint

Offbeat instagrammable places to visit in North Goa India

If you're active on Instagram, your feed must be blowing up with such unique offbeat spots in Goa. Despite living in Goa for over 13 years, I only came to know about these places in my 13th year here. This particular spot that you see in the photo above is one of the most offbeat instagrammable places in Goa. Just like most Goa-based bloggers, I am hesitant to disclose the location of this spot. This is due to the fact that once it becomes popular, people will spoil its beauty and tranquility.

But if you're still adamant about finding this place, drop me a message on my Instagram handle ( @thespicyjourney ) and I'll get back to you!

Beaches play a starring role among the attractions in Goa, contributing to why it's one of the best places to visit in India .

Nearly every tourist who visits the area spends a day at Palolem Beach , a crescent-shaped stretch of white sand that overlooks the Arabian Sea in south Goa. While simply hanging out and soaking up the scenery is a perfect way to enjoy this beautiful area, Palolem Beach also offers an array of activities to fill your time. Choose from kayaking , yoga classes , dolphin-sightseeing trips, and swimming . You can also spend the night in one of Palolem's rustic coco huts , which are erected at the start of the high season.

Colva Beach is another one of the most famous beaches in Goa , especially among Indian tourists. It has swaying palms and a broad stretch of bronze sand, where you'll occasionally see herds of cows sunbathing next to tourists. You can rent Jet Skis , hop on a thrilling banana boat ride , and get a bird's-eye view of the beach on a parasailing adventure.

Homestay accommodations in the area will give you an authentic local-style experience – plus easy access to Colva Beach.

Sunset at Utorda Beach

While known for their spectacular scenery, the popular beaches in Goa tend to get crowded during high season, leaving some travelers eager for a quieter natural escape. Fortunately, Goa brims with undiscovered beach attractions and things to do that give you some distance from the throngs of tourists while still treating you to glorious sand and surf.

One of the best hidden gems in Goa is Butterfly Beach. It has a curving expanse of sand flanked by boulders that create a postcard-worthy cove, brimming with butterflies and blossoms. It's also a great spot to watch dolphins swim in the distance.

You'll need to embark on a boat ride from Palolem Beach or Agonda Beach, or tackle a challenging forest hike, to reach Butterfly Beach – but the obstacles to getting here help to thin out the crowds. You might even have the place to yourself.

While more developed than Butterfly Beach, Utorda Beach is another stunning getaway from the more crowded beaches around Goa. It features clean, blue water; silky sand; and a few small beach shacks. Look closely as you wade in the water, and you may spot some small starfish .

Nutmeg, mace, and curry leaf, Tanshikar Spice Farm, Goa

South India has been known for its abundance of spices, like black pepper, cardamom, and cloves, for centuries. In fact, these natural flavorings were a major appeal for Portuguese traders who came to Goa hundreds of years ago.

Tourists can see what the local spice scene is all about by touring Tanshikar's Working Spice Farm & Ecological Rest House . This agritourism attraction grows seven different spices: pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, turmeric, cardamom, and chili, using totally organic farming methods.

Tours of the farm, often led by its owner, will give you an in-depth understanding of these flavor-charged crops and a chance to see some of the other products, like betelnut, coffee beans, pineapple, and banana, grown on the premises. Tanshikar's also keeps bees and produces its own all-natural honey.

Spice farm tours aren't the only fun thing to do at Tanshikar's. Guests can also take a vegetarian cooking class , visit a bubbly lake , trek to Mainapi Waterfall, and train to become a yoga teacher. It's an attraction that has something for everyone.

Goan coconut fish curry

Food is a major attraction in Goa. This part of India has a distinctive cuisine that blends Portuguese and Goan flavors, setting it apart from all the other food around India. Expect fiery flavors, fresh-caught seafood, and an abundance of coconut in the dishes.

You can't leave Goa without trying its signature dish, vindaloo, a super-hot meat curry made with palm vinegar and dried red chili peppers. Hospedaria Venite in the capital of Goa, Panaji , wows tourists with its mouthwatering vindaloo. Dominick, a Benaulim Beach mainstay, is another favorite spot for vindaloo – plus it offers front-row seats for world-class sunsets.

Another Goan specialty is xacuti, a rich curry with poppy seeds, chili, and coconut. Try it at Souza Lobo , a beachfront restaurant in Calangute , or Fat Fish , a well-trafficked spot in Baga.

Tourists hankering for some fresh seafood are spoiled for choice around Goa. Zeebop , on Utorda Beach , offers delightful fish curry, prawn stew, and mackerel doused with spicy red sauce.

You also can't go wrong with dinner at Copperleaf. The upscale restaurant in Porvorim has a fish thali that you'll be dreaming about long after you've finished.

Basilica de Bom Jesus

While many tourists visit Goa for the beaches, countless others consider the trip to be a pilgrimage to important religious sites, like the Basilica de Bom Jesus.

This Old Goa attraction dates back to the late 16th century and contains the remains of the St. Francis Xavier . The "Apostle of the Indies" co-founded the Society of Jesus religious order with friend St. Ignatius Loyola and spearheaded an extensive mission in India. The basilica has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The modest yet imposing structure is a mix of Doric, Corinthian, and Baroque style with intricate carvings. Interestingly, the building was stripped of its lime plaster in the mid-20th century, making it the only church in Goa without plaster. The Basilica de Bom Jesus has since become worn by monsoons.

You can tour the church on your own, or hire one of the independent guides near the entrance for a small fee. Inside, you can see huge ornamental screens, along with the body of the resident saint in a casket that was once covered in precious stones. It's a compelling place that will transport you back in time.

Every year, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier draws big crowds to this church in late November and early December. It kicks off with a nine-day novena and open-air masses before concluding with the major holiday on Dec. 3.

Dudhsagar Falls

Aquatic adventures go beyond the beach in Goa. The state is also home to Dudhsagar Falls, a spectacular four-tiered waterfall that towers some 310 meters above the earth. It's one of India's tallest waterfalls and a perpetually popular attraction for day trips around Goa and Karnataka .

To reach the falls, you'll need to make your way to the village of Colem by taxi or train. Depending on which train route you take, you may get a glimpse of Dudhsagar Falls along the way. Then, you'll hop aboard a shared jeep through the jungle, passing Devil's Canyon along the way. Around 45 minutes later, you'll scurry over some boulders to finally reach the falls.

The best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls is right after the monsoon , when the water is gushing. Tourists who wish to take a dip can rent a life jacket from vendors at the attraction.

Hot tip: Only 300 jeeps are allowed to enter Dudhsagar Falls every day, although tour operators have been requesting to increase the capacity during high season. Make reservations in advance, or prepare to wait in long lines if you wish to visit.

Anjuna Market

Goa is home to a ton of markets, but none offer the liveliness or selection of products found at Anjuna Market. For roughly 50 years, hundreds of vendors have been setting up shop on Anjuna Beach every Wednesday to tempt free-spirited travelers with hippy-inspired trinkets and souvenirs.

Ornate textiles, woven bikinis, sculptures of deities, dreamcatchers, hammocks, magnets, t-shirts with sassy slogans, beaded jewelry, toys – you name it, you can probably buy it here.

But even if you don't want to shop, you should still make a point to visit Anjuna Market for the sightseeing. The flea market is a swirling array of colorful wares, salespeople driving hard bargains, big bags of fresh spices, and street food galore. The vibe alone is one of the reasons why Anjuna Market is one of the top places to visit in Goa.

Address: 10 St. Michael's Vaddo South, Anjuna, Goa

Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

Make your way to the laid-back city of Panaji to visit another one of Goa's historic churches: The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The pristine white church, which dates back to the early 17th century, stands atop a zig-zagging staircase that resembles the tiers of a wedding cake. Its perfectly symmetrical Portuguese Baroque architecture is a sight to behold. At night, twinkle lights make the church look like something out of a fairy tale.

While not ornate, the church's interior boasts bright, colorful decorations. Tourists can see the elegant main altar (dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus) and gilded pillars with elaborate carvings. Vines of blue and white blossoms often adorn parts of the vaulted ceiling around various holidays.

Dec. 8 marks the Festival of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception , a major holiday at this church. Swing by to see it decked out in tons of colorful lights.

Braganza House

See what houses in Goa looked like during the 17th century at Braganza House, a historical mansion that flanks the village square in Chandor. It's divided into an east and west wing, both of which are available for tourists to poke around at their leisure.

The east wing is home to members of the Pereira-Braganza family. It boasts a massive ballroom with an impressive marble floor, along with a small chapel that contains one of St. Francis Xavier's fingernails. This part of Braganza House also brims with antiques and international artifacts.

The western side preserves the original grandeur of Braganza House. Owned by the Menezes-Braganças, the museum-like space features an expansive library with 5,000 leather-bound books from the private collection of journalist Luis de Menezes Braganza, who played an important role in the Goan independence movement. Tourists can also see breathtaking Belgian glass chandeliers, antique portraits of the family, and Chinese porcelain.

Address: Guddi-Chandor Road, Culsabhatt, Chandor, Goa

Mahadev Temple

Located just 12 kilometers north of Molem , Mahadev Temple gives tourists a chance to see a structure that has been standing since the 12th century. Its remote location helped it survive centuries of conquests by the Portuguese and Muslim colonialists. Legend has it that the black basalt temple , which was built to honor Lord Shiva, has a resident king cobra. Step inside to see the detailed work of artisan carvers, including the lotus flower on the ceiling.

If Braganza House got you excited, just wait until you see Palácio do Deão. The 200-plus-year-old palace in Quepem has been restored to its original glory. It features a blend of Indian and Portuguese architecture. Tourists are welcome to explore the heritage home, including its game room and library filled with rare tomes.

The property also features sweeping tropical gardens that make for a pleasant place to spend the afternoon. Consider making reservations in advance for afternoon tea on the terrace.

Address: Opposite Holy Cross Church, Quepem, Goa

Official site: http://www.palaciododeao.com/

Mangeshi Temple

Goa's unique culture and heritage are on full display at Mangeshi Temple, a beautiful spiritual attraction that's been standing for roughly 450 years. The pastel blue, gold, and white temple features a seven-story tower that pays homage to one of the Hindu god Shiva's many incarnations: Manguesh. The temple structures surround a sacred pool of water , which is thought to be the most historic part of this religious site.

You can watch devotees perform pujas (worship rituals) at the temple every day. If you happen to be there on a Monday, you can watch the Manguesh idol taken out for a procession, complete with music, in the late afternoon or early evening.

Address: Dinanath Mangeshkar Road, Mangeshi Village, Mardol, Goa

Colorful buildings in Fontainhas

Lace up your most comfortable pair of walking shoes and head to Panjim for a stroll around Fontainhas, one of Asia's only Latin quarters . Once the headquarters for the Portuguese government in Goa, the UNESCO-recognized Heritage Zone features colonial houses and cottages decked out with pastel and fluorescent façades. Each of the houses get a fresh coat of paint after the monsoon season every year, ensuring that they always look vibrant for visitors. Don't miss the district's namesake Fountain of Phoenix.

You can explore the area on your own, or book a walking tour for a more in-depth look at the history of this fascinating neighborhood. Either way, you'll definitely work up an appetite as you wander the narrow cobblestone streets and snap photos in front of the candy-colored buildings. Refuel at one of the decades-old cafés or bakeries in the neighborhood. Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro , a bakery near Mary Immaculate School, is known for having a wide selection of tasty Goan cakes and sweets.

Macaque in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife lovers should put Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary at the top of their Goa travel plans. The state's largest protected wildlife area, which spans 240 square kilometers and is also home to Molem National Park , is home to all kinds of amazing creatures, including the black leopard, Bengal tiger, Malabar giant squirrel, wild boar, slender loris, Indian rock python , and ruby-throated yellow bulbul (Goa's state bird).

Hiring a guide through a travel agent, and visiting the sanctuary in the early morning or late evening increases your chances at catching a glimpse of these animals. During the daytime, you can see the natural wonders of Dudhsagar Falls and Devil's Canyon . You can also check out the Tambdi Surla Temple , a temple that has survived since the 12th century, thanks to its remote location in the forest. The structure is adorned with intricate carvings of the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma.

Cannon at Reis Magos Fort

Dating back to 1493, Reis Magos Fort was once a defense structure aimed at protecting the area's then-capital, Goa Velha. Today, the fort is a top attraction in Goa for tourists looking to take a break from the beaches and dive into the state's fascinating history.

The site has a storied past not only as a military outpost, but also as a hospital and a jail. Tourists can see cannons, a small museum exhibit on the fort's history, and jaw-dropping views of the Mandovi River .

After your visit, head to the town's other famous attraction: Reis Magos Church. The pristine white church is one of just a handful of churches in Goa that has processions and re-enactments for the Feast of the Three Kings (Epiphany). Inside the structure, you can see an impressive multi-colored wood relief of a scene that depicts the Three Wise Men handing gifts to the Baby Jesus.

Goa, renowned for its immaculate beaches, lively culture, and lush surroundings, is currently moving toward a more sustainable future. E-friendliness has become increasingly crucial as worries about climate change and environmental damage increase. Examining Goa’s eco-friendly programs, behaviours, and attractions in this context not only provides insight but also serves as an example for other areas to emulate. Goa emerges as a model of sustainable practices, where the preservation of its natural beauty and cultural history takes primacy, as worries about the health of the globe grow more pressing. This article goes deep into Goa’s eco-friendly core, revealing the countless efforts, thoughtful decisions, and peaceful coexistence that are paving the way for future generations to lead greener, more responsible lives.

1. Sustainable Tourism Practices

Goa’s use of s ustainable tourism practices marks a significant change in how the area engages with its environment, culture, and visitors. This strategy aims to achieve a delicate balance between developing tourism and making sure Goa’s ecosystems and communities are sustained over the long term. Goa seeks to reduce negative effects on its natural and cultural resources while enhancing positive contributions through the introduction of sustainability concepts into the tourism industry .

  • Responsible visitor management: Responsible visitor management is essential for eco-friendly tourism in Goa to avoid overpopulation and the deterioration of sensitive ecosystems. Goa makes sure that its natural resources are preserved for future generations by actions including limiting access to popular sites, regulating tourism seasons, and promoting less-traveled regions.

Goa’s adoption of sustainable tourism techniques not only demonstrates its dedication to protecting its natural and cultural resources but also serves as an example for other travel destinations throughout the world. A model for a cleaner and more sustainable travel business, responsible tourism works in concert with environmental protection, community involvement, and cultural preservation to guarantee that Goa’s appeal remains.

2. Green Accommodations

The astonishing evolution of Goa’s hospitality industry is at the core of the state’s transformation into an eco-friendly state. To redefine how visitors experience this coastal sanctuary while leaving a kinder ecological impact, the idea of “Green Accommodation” has gained traction. In addition to providing a comfortable place to stay, these eco-friendly lodgings support sustainable practices that align with the state’s dedication to environmental protection and ethical tourism.

  • Solar-Powered Retreats: Goa’s eco-friendly lodgings use the region’s plentiful sunshine to run their businesses. Rooftops are adorned with solar panels that transform sunshine into clean energy used to run heaters, lights, and appliances. This strategy not only lowers carbon emissions but also shows how we may live in harmony with the environment.
  • Harvesting rainwater: Given Goa’s tropical climate, water conservation is a top priority. Rainwater harvesting systems are now a common feature in eco-friendly lodgings. These systems capture and store rainwater for use in irrigation and toilet flushing, among other things. This method lessens dependency on local water supplies and mitigates water scarcity.
  • Energy-Efficient Infrastructure: In environmentally friendly lodgings, sustainable architecture takes center stage. The demand for air cooling and heating is reduced through energy-efficient designs, natural ventilation, and insulating materials, which lowers energy consumption and improves visitor comfort.
  • Initiatives for Responsible Trash Management: Goa’s eco-friendly hotels promote ethical trash management. They put a high priority on waste segregation, recycling, and composting to ensure that most of the trash produced is kept out of landfills. This dedication serves as an example for both visitors and the neighborhood.

Goa’s Potential for Green Accomodation

The potential for green lodging in the state is a game-changing chance to provide visitors with more than just a place to rest but also an immersive experience that is in line with sustainable values.

  • Integration of Renewable Energy: Goa’s plentiful sunshine can be used to generate solar electricity, while the coastal breezes can be used to generate wind energy. When it comes to implementing renewable energy sources to reduce their carbon impact, green lodging may set the bar high.
  •  Water Conservation: Using water-saving techniques like wastewater treatment, effective plumbing systems, and rainwater collection can drastically cut water usage and help with resource management.
  • Certification and Recognition: Goa’s green lodgings can apply for certifications from organizations like LEED or EarthCheck, giving ecologically aware tourists peace of mind and establishing standards for the sector.
  • Research and Innovation: Collaborating with research institutes and groups can result in the creation of cutting-edge sustainable practices and a mindset of constant improvement.

The growth of eco-friendly lodging in Goa is an example of a forward-thinking mentality that places environmental responsibility at the center of the hospitality sector. These accommodations present a concept where luxury, comfort, and sustainability converge, appealing to travelers who are looking for immersive and responsible experiences.

3. Biodiversity in Goa

The state has started ambitious measures to conserve biodiversity because it understands how important it is to preserve this natural wealth. The importance of Goa’s commitment to preserving its ecological resources grows as the demands of development and tourism increase. The state works to strike a healthy balance between development and preservation through several conservation initiatives, protected areas, and community involvement.

Goa’s various landscapes are woven together in an enthralling tapestry by its biodiversity. • Native Plant Promotion: Promote the use of native plants in landscaping and urban development to help local wildlife, from birds to pollinators, by creating habitats that will benefit them.

4. Waste Management and Recycling

Waste management and recycling are proving to be essential cornerstones of Goa’s sustainable growth as the city’s pulsating tourism and development scene intensifies. The state is dedicated to protecting its pristine environment with cutting-edge waste management techniques and a growing recycling culture. The state’s landscape is graced by both verdant hinterlands and stunning coastline scenery.

  • Effective Waste Collection and Segregation: Goa has made progress in ensuring that various forms of waste are segregated at the source of generation. The state creates the groundwork for efficient recycling by teaching citizens and visitors about responsible garbage disposal.
  • Promotion of Recycling Centers: Citizens are invited to take an active role in the recycling process at the recycling centers that dot the Goan landscape. These facilities serve as collection points for recyclable items like paper, plastic, glass, and metals, preventing them from ending up in landfills and fostering their reuse.
  • Incentives for Recycling: The introduction of incentives, such as deposit-refund programs for bottles and cans, motivates people to actively engage in recycling initiatives. These programs also instill a sense of accountability and provide financial incentives for waste minimization.
  • Public Awareness and Education: Public awareness initiatives and educational initiatives are essential for modifying attitudes and routines. Goa sows the seeds for a greener future by teaching the next generation through schools and community activities.

  • Public-Private Partnerships: By working together with private businesses and waste management specialists, it is possible to make use of resources and knowledge to develop comprehensive waste management solutions.

Goa’s enormous potential illuminates the way to lasting development. The state can not only protect its natural and cultural legacy but also set an example for sustainability on a global scale by embracing innovation, encouraging partnerships, and cultivating a shared vision for a greener future.

5. Community Involvement

Goa’s effort to become more environmentally friendly is driven by the potent force of citizen involvement. The state’s thriving communities are working together to create a future that is more ecologically sensitive and sustainable. Each community has its distinct cultural heritage, traditions, and goals. The people of Goa are playing a crucial part in establishing a peaceful coexistence between people and nature via cooperation, education, and shared responsibility.

  • Local leaders and initiatives: Communities in Goa are launching grass-roots campaigns to promote sustainable lifestyles. These committed people are igniting change from the ground up, from local clean-up campaigns to cooperative organic farming. Moreover,  Encourage local leaders to start neighborhood cleanliness programs and tree-planting efforts to demonstrate the power of group effort.

Young and old inhabitants are taught the value of eco-friendliness and their part in preserving the region’s natural beauty through workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns.
  • Cultural Celebrations for Sustainability: Goa’s diverse cultural heritage provides a venue for honoring environmentally responsible behaviors. Festivals and events are increasingly including sustainability themes, highlighting the relationship between custom and ethical behavior.
  • Online activism and social media: Digital platforms help groups communicate, exchange ideas, and organize for environmental causes. Online initiatives, informational drives, and virtual clean-up activities magnify neighborhood efforts and encourage wider participation.

Goa’s Potential for Community Involvement

  • Grassroots Initiatives: Goa’s local communities can launch neighborhood cleanup drives, tree-planting initiatives, and waste-reduction programs, showcasing the tremendous impact of group action on enhancing local ecosystems.

  • Advocacy and Policy Influence: Communities can voice their issues, offer answers, and influence legislation through collective lobbying to make sure environmentally friendly factors are incorporated into development plans.

Goa is a heartwarming example of how community involvement and environmental friendliness work together to develop a place. People are not only creating a greener Goa as they come together to conserve the area’s natural beauty, cultural legacy, and quality of life, but they are also providing a reassuring model for international sustainability initiatives.

How To Use Tourism Hashtags For Travel Marketing

According to a US Travel Trends report , one million travel-related hashtags are searched on a weekly basis. That’s a substantial potential audience to get in front of for your travel company!

Hashtags help you get more organic reach, which you need for getting more engagement and followers on social media. The great thing about running a tourism business is that there are so many excellent tourism hashtags to tap into to maximize this.

Travel and tourism are one of the most popular niches on social media. Your potential customers are searching on media every day for ideas and inspiration. With the right use of hashtags, you could be the first brand they see.

So, how do you find and use tourism hashtags correctly? We explain it all in our complete guide below.

goa tourism hashtags

What is a Hashtag Strategy?

Before just randomly inserting a few tourism hashtags, stop and consider what you’re doing. A hashtag strategy is necessary for your posts to get maximum reach - and the right kind of reach.

While inserting lots of hashtags into your content will help you reach more people, using the wrong hashtags could also have a negative effect. If you post the wrong type of content for your hashtags, nobody will engage with it. It will also make your brand look overly promotional, trying to seek engagement where it doesn’t make sense.

That is why it’s so important to have a solid hashtag strategy mapped out before you hit ‘post’.

A hashtag strategy is a plan of action for how you will use your hashtags and what kind of hashtags to use. Creating a hashtag strategy is all about finding the right tourism hashtags that are relevant to your business, and making sure you include the correct set of hashtags in each post.

Your overall hashtag strategy should include a very large set of hashtags to choose from. Typically, this should include broad hashtags that relate to your industry as a whole, and then more specific hashtags tailored for each specific post or content pillar that you publish on.

You could load up your post with 50 hashtags, and not see any increase in engagement. At the same time, you could use 20 highly-target and well-planned hashtags, and see a huge boost in engagement overnight.

Why is this?

Because you need to make sure that you use the right hashtags for what your audience wants to see, and what they are most likely to use. To understand this better, it’s important to know how hashtags work.

Gaining Travel Brand Visibility With Social Media Marketing and #Hashtags

Regardless of the type of tourism business you operate, one of your main marketing goals should be to increase brand awareness and improve the visibility of your company online. A social media strategy is essential for achieving this, and a key part of marketing on social platforms is using the right hashtags.

Hashtags can be used across various platforms - including Instagram , TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook . The whole aim of using hashtags is to increase your reach, get more impressions, and ultimately ramp up your social media engagement.

The tricky thing about travel social media is that it’s incredibly competitive. Even if you’re posting great content, it might not get any organic reach. Hashtags are an essential way to boost this reach because they put make your content visible for a wider range of search queries.

Look at your social media posts and analyze their performance. How many of your impressions came from the hashtags you used? Most likely a fair amount. Hashtags have been found to increase social media engagement by 12.6% .

Hashtags increase the visibility of your posts and your brand. They help you to connect with the right audience, get your target audience to discover you, and boost engagement on your posts. To make sure that your organic social media content is reaching the maximum number of people, you’ll need to use the right tourism hashtags.

How Do Tourism Hashtags Work?

To find the right tourism hashtags and use them effectively, you’ll first need to know how these hashtags work.

Basically, a user can search for a hashtag on social media - just like they would search for an account. The most popular and most recent hashtags posts using that hashtag will appear. Ideally, you’d want your post to be first, claiming the most popular spot.

You can only achieve this if you post high-quality content that’s relevant to the hashtag.

For example, you could use an incredibly popular hashtag like #travel. Sure, this could get you lots of impressions, but there are two main problems:

  • The hashtag is incredibly broad, so users searching for #travel could be after all kinds of different content
  • The hashtag is super popular, but it’s also super competitive. This means your post will quickly get buried underneath the competition if it doesn't attract enough engagement.

To combat this, you’ll want to create a hashtag strategy that is both broad and specific at the same time. Instead of only relying on tourism hashtags like #travel, refine it by using something like #birdingtours or #adventuretravel. The more specific you get, the easier it will be to post highly-relevant content to that hashtag.

And the more specific you are, the more likely you will be able to attract the right kind of users. Because it’s not just about getting a lot of engagement, it’s about getting engagement from the right people.

tourism hashtags

So, consider your target audience and what they will be searching for. This might be something like #ItalyFoodTours or #SurfLessonsCapeTown. Whatever the case, make sure that your business has a clear presence for the right hashtags.

Of course, hashtags work slightly differently on each social media channel. Users search for trending hashtags on TikTok, which are often challenges or some take on trending audio content. On Instagram, hashtags are more straightforward, creating a kind of gallery of content on specific topics.

What Types Of Hashtags Should You Use?

The most important part of your tourism hashtag strategy is finding the right tags to use. As we’ve already mentioned, this should include both high-level hashtags (like #travel) and more specific hashtags (like #birdingtours).

The high-level hashtags will help you maximize your impressions. This will get the most people possible to see your post and potentially interact with your content. If you just want to get more likes, then using these popular hashtags will help.

More targeted hashtags will help you grow a more authentic audience. If you want to use social media to attract potential customers, then you’ll need to be specific about your hashtags.

Using both hashtags together will help you achieve both things at the same time.

How To Find Travel Hashtags?

There are a few different ways that you can approach hashtags to find the right ones for your brand.

Start by analyzing your competitors. Search for your main competition (preferably a business that has excellent social media engagement and a lot of followers), and look at what hashtags they are using. If these hashtags also apply to you, then take note.

tourism hashtags

Next, simply search for the kind of hashtags you think would work. Type keywords that describe your business into the search bar, and look for recommended hashtags. You could use destinations you cover, activities that you offer (bicycle tours, cruises, history walks), what kind of travelers you want to attract (adventure, slow travel, wellness), and so on. Try to make as big of a list as possible.

Using Your Tourism Hashtags

When you find relevant tourism hashtags, create a spreadsheet and divide based on pillars.

For example, you could have a broad hashtag pillar (#travel, #yoga, #holiday), and then specific hashtags under each type of content or travel option that you offer. For example, if you offer hiking tours and cycling tours, have a set of hashtags for each pillar.

Then, when you post something on social media, simply go to your pillar and copy-paste your hashtags. Be sure to include a few relevant broad hashtags too.

Measuring the Impact Of Your Marketing Efforts

To make sure you’re using tourism hashtags for marketing your business correctly, you’ll need to measure the impact these hashtags actually have.

Use your social media channel’s insights/analytics dashboard to measure the impressions and engagement of your posts.

If you see a big increase in impressions but little increase in engagement, then you’ll want to refine your hashtags more to make them more relevant. Ideally, you want increased impressions and engagement that matches this.

If your posts aren’t getting more engagement from your hashtags, then it’s time to change up the hashtags you’re using.

Continue testing this until you get it right.

Travel marketing is highly competitive, That is why it’s so important that you have a comprehensive strategy to maximize your brand awareness. Tourism hashtags form a necessary part of this.

Quite simply, hashtags will help you get more reach in terms of your audience, gain more visibility, and more engagement overall. If you’re struggling to make enough of an impact on social media, follow our guide above to increase your following.

The most difficult tweet that Goa News Hub released in our journey of five years was on March 17, 2019, the GNH was just one-year-old then.

It was an evening when everyone was worried about the deteriorating health of then CM Manohar Parrikar, who was bedridden due to cancer. All of a sudden, one of my close friend, who was at the bedside of ailing Parrikar called me to inform that the chief minister was no more.

We did not break the story, immediately, even though the entire world was waiting to get health update about Parrikar. It was the moment when we consciously decided that breaking a story was of a very less importance than the loss that we were going to suffer after his death.

Our entire team waited for some time as we could not digest the news. Few moments later, President of India twitter handle was the first one to break the news. Later, we released the tweet. Parrikar was no more.

Since its inception till date, Goa News Hub has been breaking new grounds, at times attracting bitter criticism and later setting trends in Goa’s Journalism.

The GNH had a humble beginning. We started with a twitter account which was our sole platform where we broke the news. We were cub amongst the giants.

That was a time when news channels hardly treated twitter as a medium to break the news. When we did that, initially, we were mocked at. Later, we began carrying advertisements on twitter. That was the only revenue source we had. That time, we were mocked at.

As I write this article today, we have all the media houses prominently using  twitter to break stories and also carry advertisements.

As we were not the cable television media house, we had to shoot and carry our interviews on the Facebook page. That time everyone mocked at us. Interview on Facebook? Who watches interviews on Facebook? Facebook is for personal posts. These were the most common comments  passed about GNH.

But we still continued what we were good in – consistency.

Down the line, five years later, the GNH has emerged as a leading digital media in the state. The figures show that we are number one in the digital media segment and inching closer to prominent news channels. The growth is encouraging.

If you all allow me to narrate the anecdote about GNH’s journey,   I still remember a day when I shot Passay with late Mahadev Joshi, aka MJ Rocket. The episode got nearly 3 lakh views in a day. That was perhaps the time when Mahadev helped us to skyrocket our viewership base.

It gave birth to series called Passay. This series has covered right from the newly discovered places, waterfalls to highlighting the cultural aspects of the state.

Hub Encounter has been a popular interview show. Hub Express is a travel show that covered election like never before. The Hub Express continues in a new form. Unsung Hero discovered the talents worth being saluted. Get Up Start Up brought to fore the Start Up industry. Hub Life introduced you to the people who have excelled in their life.

GNH has a sleek team of reporters but we get the real videos through our followers and well-wishers, who are our real strength.

Remember a day when  Tauktae cyclone devastated the state.  The situation was worst as life had come to a standstill. But GNH continued breaking the stories on that particular day, thanks to our well wishers including fishermen who were at the coast, our friends from Sattari who were sitting in the inundated village and sending us pictures and videos and some of those who were stuck on the road due to trees fallen on the roads. Our reporters were our readers.

As we continue our journey in the sixth year, we assure you to give our best. We will provide the best coverage of the events and also bring to you, Goa which is beyond Hashtag.

Pro Tips to Get Your Hashtag Game Right on Instagram

Now that you know which travel hashtags to use for what, it’s time to look at the other things to keep in mind while posting:

  • Avoid going for hashtags that are already used in too many posts and are generic. Otherwise, you will have a tough time attracting followers or showing up towards the top of the feed when someone searches with an over-used hashtag like #travel #explore or #adventure . Try the ones that are not so competitive or a little creative. Some good examples are – #travelholic #travelbug #nomadiclife #takethescenicroute #wanderlustwednesday and so on.
  • Make sure you hashtag these things – your location (you can zero in on the region or neighbourhood too), popular brand hashtags that airlines, tourist attractions or tourism boards use (like #DiscoverHongKong), what you can see around (like #snow, #beach, #sunset etc.) and your action (like #hiking, #running, #swimming, #relaxing etc.). Focus on the moment too (whether it’s #pretty, #yum, #funny etc.).
  • Though Instagram allows you to add a maximum of 30 hashtags (and some of the best Instagrammers do that), 11 is considered to be the ideal number that gets you new followers. Plus, even after you post, you can add more hashtags in the section reserved for comments. This way, your caption won’t look too cluttered. However, avoid editing a post after it goes live, as it tends to get less exposure.

So, what’s the plan now? Are you ready to fire up your Instagram account with some amazing travel photos and effective hashtags? Keep this guide handy, follow top travel Instagrammers, and keep experimenting to find out what is working best for you.

Goa to announce homestay, caravan policies; new roadmap beyond beaches next month: Tourism minister

Minister also stated in an interview with PTI that the goal of “Goa Tourism 2.0” is to emphasize “quality over quantity” as well as responsible and sustainable activities that respect the environment and are in keeping with local customs

Goa to announce homestay, caravan policies; new roadmap beyond beaches next month: Tourism minister

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte stated that the new roadmap positions the coastal state as a 365-day destination “beyond beaches” and that a new homestay policy that aims to take tourists into the heart of Goa and make them experience its “actual traditions” is expected to be implemented in a month.

He also stated in an interview with PTI that the goal of “Goa Tourism 2.0” is to emphasize “quality over quantity” as well as responsible and sustainable activities that respect the environment and are in keeping with local customs.

The new caravan policy from Goa Tourism, according to the minister, is also anticipated to go into effect within a month.

“Goa has always been a preferred destination for tourists, known for its beautiful beaches, and we are known for our party life, more of a different culture. But Goa is much more than that… and unfortunately in the past, we have not been able to get that thought changed, that perception about Goa,” he said.

Goa is about rich traditions, rich culture, great food, great people, great eco-tourism, a lot of opportunities for adventure, and many things happening. And, that’s why “we need to stitch things together,” he asserted.

“So, right now with the whole thought process of what Goa has been, when we talk of Goa for its beaches, its party life. Today, we move with the hashtag of #GoaBeyondBeaches, and Goa beyond beaches has been a thought process post-Covid, when we have realises that we need to look at tranquillity, immersiveness, and that exactly what tourists today are looking for,” Khaunte said.

“We need to look at more of quality tourists coming in than the numbers. The number game has to stop, because tourism is the main vertical for the state. We need to ensure that it gives the right path to the economy and employment, and being a major churner of the industry in the state, we need to get our things right,” he said.

Goa government has been talking in the last few months, of moving the focus of the state’s tourism sector to areas such as spirituality and wellness, eco-tourism, rural tourism and much more, and not fixating on the idea of sun, sand and surf that Goa has traditionally been popular for.

“The new process of Goa tourism, I would say Goa tourism 2.0, has already started, which we today would like to include on a larger scale, rural tourism, eco-tourism and hinterland, and to stitch to that we have a path where we would like to include our various festivals, great traditions, great food, homestays, spirituality,” Khaunte said.

Asked about the homestay policy, he said it goes in line with the new vision of ‘Goa beyond beaches’ and will let tourists travel away from the coastal area and into the rich hinterland, he said.

“This will take tourists right into the heart of Goa and make them experience the actual traditions and culture of Goa. This policy will outline 100 houses in the first phase, located only in rural belt, areas such as Bicholim.

The policy is expected to be rolled out in a month’s time, along with the caravan policy of the tourism department,” the minister said, adding, about 60 per cent land parcel in Goa in the rural belt.

Homestays will also allow people to experience the local culture, traditions, festivals, cuisine and much more, he said, adding for this “we have signed an MoU with Airbnb”.

A top official in the Goa tourism department said Airbnb will provide capacity building, training for owners of such properties.

The new caravan policy entails operators to run a recreational van, so that one is not constrained by itinerary as one is in a hotel stay. It will also include setting up caravan park where the plan is to provide utilities, sanitation services, vehicle charging points, etc, the official said.

Khaunte said Goa has very old temples, churches, but its history is even richer.

“We have Saptakoteshwar Temple, waterfalls, we have many things. But, still there are many things to explore, many things to understand… And, to understand Goa in the right sense and the right flavour, and that’s exactly we are trying to position, Goa, as a 365-day destination, where one gets a personal feeling within the space, rejuvenation happens. It is no longer a seasonal tourism,” the minister said.

Emphasising that Goa is also known as ‘Parshuram Bhoomi’, he said the tourism department has envisioned to create “a civil infrastructure” wherein inside there will be various facilities, and which from outside will look like a bow, and which will end up on the seaside.

“As per the legend, Lord Parshuram had shot an arrow and it moved the sea away, from which ‘Goa’ had emerged,” he said.

The minister said about 10-15 acres of land on the seaside will be needed for this project.

“It’s a thought. But, to make it happen, it’s not only through the state government, but will have to make it happen through Union ministries. And, we look forward to support from Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism. We are trying to get it executed under both the ministries together, as an ‘iconic destination’,” he added.

He also underlined that the ‘digital nomad’ fraternity is a growing tribe and “about 46 countries mapped under it”.

“These people (who want to work from home, away from home) need creative space and quality of space, and Goa gives this by default. This vision works for long haul, and we are trying to talk to the Centre to get digital nomad visa being issued for such tourists. If this visa thing gets cleared, we will start getting a new set of tourists on a long haul, they will complement homestay policy, contribute to economy, talent pool generation and capacity building,” he said.

TTAG Worried About Sustainability of Tourism in Goa

T3 News Network

High airfare and fewer flights key concerns

Travel & Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) is very concerned about the sustainability of tourism business in Goa in wake of many challenges the industry faces. “Post-pandemic Goa’s tourism sector is facing many challenges. Airfare is still quite high and the number of international flights is still less than the pre-pandemic level,” said Nilesh Shah, President of TTAG, a leading travel trade association of Goa. “It is very essential to resume more scheduled international flights to and from Goa to increase overall foreign tourist arrivals in the state,” Shah added.

Post pandemic, Goa’s tourism sector witnessed strong resurge for almost two years because then many international destinations were not open, and people were desperate to travel as they had not been able to travel due to restrictions on travel. “Post-pandemic every segment of Goa’s tourism industry performed well. Tourists from segments such as family, wedding, MICE, and others thronged to the state,” said Shah, “But now, with the openings of international destinations, competition has picked up for the state’s tourism sector, and the challenge is to sustain the gains. So today sustainability of tourism business is a key challenge before us.”

The reduced number of charter flights to Goa is a challenge to the sustainability of tourism business. Russia and the UK have been the two major charter-flight markets for Goa. “In the best pre-pandemic times, Goa used to receive about 1200 charter flights between October and March, but currently because of Russia-Ukraine war, and the collapse of Thomas Cook in the UK, the number of charter flights coming to Goa has reduced significantly, affecting our inbound business.” said Shah.
