Guide – Bank Statements For Your Schengen Visa Application

What are the bank statements for your schengen visa application.

A bank statement is a document (also known as an account statement) that contains the summary of your financial transactions (bank balance, deposits, charges, withdrawals, interests earned on the account, etc.) that occurred at a certain bank during a month (most of the time it is one month, but it could be one quarter in some cases). 

A bank statement is a document that provides a full overview of your account for a specific period. 

Some banks can record your statements on file for at least five years, sometimes longer. A one-month statement doesn’t necessarily last from the first to last day of a calendar month. 

Some banks can also track your account from the fifth day of a month to the fourth day of the following month.

Submitting the bank statements as proof of financial means is a mandatory requirement when applying for a Schengen Visa, no matter your employment status or your purpose of entry into the Area.  

Some Embassies/Consulates require the statements of the last 3 months while some others require the statements of the last 6 months. 

However, no matter the Embassy you apply to, we recommend that you submit your bank statements for the last 6 months – more is better.

Please be aware of the following rules when applying for a Schengen Visa:

•  If you are able to cover all of the expenses for your trip yourself, then you must submit your own bank statements
• If you have a sponsor, you will have to provide both your bank statements and the ones of your sponsor (all of them for the last 6 months) – together with your sponsorship letter and other mandatory requirements.

The main purpose of these documents is to prove that you have enough funds to support all of the expenses during your stay within Europe. They are a key element during your Schengen Visa application process . 

Please note that providing bank statements from only yourself or yourself and your sponsor that cumulatively show that you do not have enough funds on your account can cost you the approval of the Schengen Visa.

These documents will show the Schengen Visa officers not only the type of transactions that occurred within your account, but also the details of those transactions (for example, the name of the person or the institution that transferred money into your account).

This is the main reason why we do not recommend you borrow money from your parents, relatives, or friends so that you can have a higher amount of “show money” (the colloquial term used to indicate the funds that you must have when you travel in order to get a Visa) . 

The Schengen Visa officers are experts at spotting irregularities and this can lead to the rejection of your Schengen Visa. They will also check on your account the opening date because a new account may raise suspicions. 

Note : You can submit the statements corresponding to more bank accounts.

For example, you can submit the statements corresponding to your both current and savings account. Or, you can submit the statements corresponding to accounts opened in different countries (e.g., you are a Filipino citizen resident in India and submit bank statements corresponding to the accounts you hold in India and the Philippines). 

You can also submit the bank statements related to a joint account (whether you opened the joint account together with a relative or a business partner).

Important: If you are self-employed, you must also submit a company bank statement for the last 6 months and a copy of your business license. This is a mandatory requirement for applicants who are running their own businesses.

Thus, there are two categories of bank statements you must submit if you’re self-employed: personal and company bank statements. Both of them are important as part of the Schengen Visa application process.

The Importance Of The Bank Statements For Your Schengen Visa

You may ask yourself why it is so important to the Embassies/Consulates that you submit the bank statements together with the rest of your documents. Below you will find the answers:  

• Your bank balance (as well as the one of your sponsor – if you have one) will show the Visa officers you have enough funds to cover your basic travel expenses and other needs. 

In case you are still asking yourself ” Why do I need to prove that I have enough money to spend during my trip? ” the answer is: ” The Schengen Visa officers want to ensure that you won’t be a burden for the countries within the Schengen Region and you have enough financial means to support yourself in an emergency ”.

• They provide strong evidence of your intentions to return to your country of residence, by showing you have current living expenses and salary operating out of your account – Bear in mind that most of the rejected Schengen Visa applicants were not able to prove that they intend to go back to their country of residence after their journey in the Schengen Region. 

How To Get A Bank Statement For Your Schengen Visa Application?

There are two ways you can get the bank statements of the latest 6 months:

1. Getting the bank statements online

The online mode refers to the electronic version of your bank statements that you can get in a PDF format once you login to your account through the bank’s net banking portal or mobile banking app. 

After you download the PDF file (not a screenshot), you can print it off and submit it to the Embassy/Consulate together with your other documents. 

Here are the steps you should follow:

• Log into your bank account – You can do it directly from your computer or using a mobile banking app.
• Select “Statements” (“Bank Statement” or “E-Statements”) – Although every bank is different and the Internet banking portals are not identical, you should easily find the option that allows you to download your statements.
• Select the appropriate account (in case you have more than one account at the same bank) and the statement period (you can also submit statements from multiple accounts, but each one must have a 6 months minimum of statements).
• The bank should send the list of statements for the selected period on the email address corresponding to your account – or you can download it directly as a PDF if your bank Internet portal allows you to do that. 
• Print off the statement (colour printing is preferred).

Remember that most of the banks allow you to access a one-month bank statement meaning that you will have to download and print off six different statements (of the latest 6 months).

2. Getting the bank statements offline 

 There are a few banks that do not provide the option to download or print the statements via net banking portal or mobile banking app. If your bank is one of them, you have two options:

• Send a letter or email or call to your bank and ask for your statements of the last 6 months (you should receive them by email) – this step does require a lot of verification as it is virtual.
• Visit your bank branch and request the statements you need over the counter.

Remember that you also have two options when submitting the bank statements together with all the rest of the documents for your Schengen Visa application:

•  Submit the account statements you got after following one of the methods mentioned above.
• Submit the bank statements with the authorised signature of the bank (you can ask one of the representatives of your bank to sign and stamp each one of them).

Providing bank statements that have the evidence and proof of the bank with authorised signature is NOT mandatory and no Embassy/Consulate mentions that specifically.  

Nevertheless, you can do that if you would like to provide additional proof to the Schengen Visa officers. This choice can also depend on the type of statements provided by your bank. On some of them it can be written on one of the top corners that the statement is “valid without the signature and the stamps of the bank” (in this case, it would be completely useless to submit them with the signature and the stamp of the bank, even when you want to bring additional proof the the Schengen Visa officers).  

What Are The Key Elements Of A Bank Statement For The Schengen Visa Application?

It is easy to understand a bank statement as it contains only basic information about you and your account. The most important elements of a bank statement that you submit for your Schengen Visa application are:

● Your bank balance  

In case you are asking yourself how much money you should have on your account, the answer is “ it depends on your destination country ”. 

However, most Embassies/Consulates mention a specific amount of money that you must have in your account so that your Schengen Visa can be approved. As a general rule, we do not encourage you to show the Visa officers that you intend to travel with less than 60 EUR a day, for each day that you are going to spend within the Schengen Area. (e.g., if you are travelling for 10 days, we recommend you to have at least 600 EUR in your account, no matter your destination(s) within Europe).

● The correspondence between the details on your bank statements and the ones on your other documents 

If you are going to cover all of the expenses for your trip within the Schengen Area, you must provide information about you as an employee – for example, you should provide a Certificate of Employment /Employment letter and a No Objection Letter (NOC) from your employer.

If on these documents it is written that your salary is 500 EUR per month and your statements show a deposit of 2000 EUR each month, this might raise some suspicion, unless justified in your cover letter .  

● The date when the account was open 

If you opened your account just a few months before applying for a Schengen Visa, this can raise some red flags too. 

The Schengen Visa officers can think that you opened the account just for your application process. A newly opened account will not necessarily lead  to the rejection of your Visa, but can reduce your chances of approval. 

We would recommend you show to the Schengen Visa officers the statements related to an account opened at least one year before applying for the Visa. 

● The regularity of the transactions 

The transactions on your account should be regular. 

For example, if you show the Schengen Visa officers your bank statements of the last 6 months and they prove you didn’t make any transactions (such as ATM withdrawals or payments) they might think you opened the account with the purpose of having some “show money” and getting the Schengen Visa. 

The statements should prove that you use your account regularly. 

● The type of transactions  

If someone deposits a high amount of money on your account (whether it was once or multiple times), the Schengen Visa officers could think that you borrowed money just for your Schengen Visa application process. 

They need to understand clearly where your money is coming from, who is the person (or the institution) that deposits into your account and the reasons why you receive it. 

Most of the time, this will just be your salary (which is covered by your employment contract and Employer NOC Letter) but other times it could be your sponsor (if the sponsor is depositing money into your account, please outline that in the Cover Letter).

Common Mistakes To Avoid When Submitting The Bank Statements For The Schengen Visa Application

● submitting the printed screenshots of your bank statements.

 The Schengen Visa officers won’t accept them. You must download and print (or print directly from your account) the PDF files that contain the statements related to the transactions you made within the last 6 months. 

● Submitting a bank certificate instead of a bank statement 

A bank certificate is usually a one-page document that certifies that you have an account with that branch. It does not contain a summary of your financial transactions – and your transactions are exactly the details that the Schengen Visa officers are interested in.

● Submitting bank statements that prove you do not have enough funds to travel 

This might be the worst mistake a Schengen Visa applicant can make. Showing to the Schengen Visa officers that you have less than 60 EUR a day to spend in the Schengen Area can lead to the rejection of your Visa (for some Embassies/Consulates also 60 EUR a day could be enough. 

Also, we do not encourage you to take the risk and show them you can afford to spend only 60 EUR a day – just remember: more is better).

● Submitting your income summary account 

The income summary account is a one-page document that shows only the total bank balance on your account (remember that an account statement must show the history of all your financial transactions such as deposits, charges, withdrawals, interests earned on the account, etc.).  

● Submitting the bank statements in your native language  

 You should submit the bank statements in a language that the Schengen Visa officers know.

For example, if your bank provides statements in Arabic, the Schengen Visa officers might not understand it. Contact your bank and ask if they can provide you with the account statements in English. Otherwise, you should make a certified translation of the statements.

● Submitting bank statements that do not show the details of your transactions 

 For the Schengen Visa officers it is not enough to see that you made a payment or someone made a deposit into your account, but they also need to understand the details of the transactions (e.g., where or to whom you paid money, or who deposited money into your account).

● Submitting bank statements that do not prove you get the salary mentioned on your employment documents

If you pay for the trip with your own money and need to show the Schengen Visa officers that you are an employee, your bank statements must prove you receive once a month the salary mentioned on your certificate of employment, NOC letter from your employer, or your employment contract.

● Submitting only the first page of a one-month bank statement 

Of course, if your bank statement has only one page, submit it as such. 

But, for example, if every bank statement you download has 3 pages and you must submit 6 bank statements it means that you will have to show to the Embassy/Consulate officers a total of 18 pages (an easy way to validate is to check the ‘page count’ located at the bottom right corner of each page to ensure you have included every single one).

● Submitting bank statements that do not show consistency with your other documents

Your bank balance must show consistency with your other documents. 

For example, if you submit bank statements that show you can afford to spend only 60EUR per day and your   hotel reservations show you booked a 5-star hotel class with expensive amenities, this may raise some red flags. 

The hotel type you choose must fit your bank balance and budget.

Also, your bank statements and Personal Income Tax Return (ITR) should show consistency and prove you pay income taxes.    

Applying for a Schengen Visa with a Sponsor and Need Your Sponsor’s Bank Statements?

If you have a sponsor who will be covering the expenses for your Schengen Area trip, then you have to submit your sponsor’s bank statements as part of your Visa application (together with your own bank statements). 

This is a mandatory requirement for all Embassies because Visa officers need to ensure that your sponsor has the financial ability to support your trip to Europe.

Please note that some Embassies require you to submit your sponsor’s bank statements for the last 3 months, while others require you to submit your sponsor’s bank statements for the last 6 months.

Which countries need a visa for Switzerland?

A tourist and visitor visa (C-visa) for Switzerland is the most common type of visa granted for short-stay trips such as holidays or visiting family . This visa is valid for 90 days and allows for travel to all parts of Switzerland and the Schengen area. On top of the documents listed above, to apply for this visa you will also need to provide:

• Proof of residency in the country in which you are applying.
• A recent letter from your employer; if you are self-employed or a  freelancer  and want to apply for a Swiss tourist visa, a copy of a business license or tax return is required.

2. Swiss Schengen visa

If you want to come to Switzerland for business, medical or cultural reasons from a country that does not have a visa agreement with Switzerland, you will need a Swiss Schengen visa (European C-visa). Some non-EU / EFTA nationals may also have to apply for a Schengen visa in order to enter the country to apply for a residence permit.

4. Swiss transit visa

A Swiss transit visa (A-visa) is for international airport passengers that are making a stopover at a Swiss airport  while travelling to a destination outside of the Schengen area. To apply for a Swiss transit visa you must provide proof of visa for your final destination. You are not permitted to exit the airport at any point with this type of visa. If you need to exit the airport in Switzerland then you must apply for a Swiss Schengen visa.

Staying longer than 90 days

If you would like to extend your stay beyond the 90-day limit and have not applied for a national visa or residence permit, you must contact your county (canton) .

To extend your visa you will require:

• A valid reason to extend your stay such as personal circumstances or inability to travel to your country of residence.
• Proof of financial means to remain in Switzerland.

To be able to apply for a tourist permit, you must meet the following conditions - 

• You must be in your home country while applying in the country. If you are residing in a residence permit in another nation, you can apply it to the embassy over there. 
• You must possess a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel.
• Your only purpose of the visit has to be to take part in tourism-related activities.
• You must have sufficient funds to cover your stay in Switzerland.
• You must apply for the permit only if -
• Switzerland is your only destination, or
• Switzerland is one of your multiple Schengen destinations -  in which case you will be spending the majority of the time here, or, 
• Switzerland is your port of entry.

As per the Switzerland tourist visa requirements for Indian citizens , the following are the list of documents you must submit at the VAC - 

• A valid passport- 
• It must contain at least 2 blank pages.
• It should not be older than 10 years.
• It should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel.
• Old passports, if any, are to be attached.
• This must include the applicant's details.
• It should clearly mention the source of funds.
• It should clearly state the purpose of tourism, and the duration of the visit.
• It should be signed by the applicant and addressed to the Embassy of Switzerland.
• Flight reservation for round trip
• Proof of accommodation - hotel bookings/invitation to stay/residence bookings, etc 
• Medical travel insurance coverage up to at least 30000 Euros
• Proof of occupation - 

Proof of occupation such as employment letter, Copy of business license, etc.

• Financial documents -

Financial documents such as bank statements of the past 3 months, Passbook copy, ITR, etc.

• Dimensions: 35mm X 45mm
• Colour: Coloured
• Head must occupy the central position
• Must be captured within the last 3 months
• Background: Solid, plain white or grey
• 80% face coverage
• Neutral expression
• Glasses: Non-thick framed and prescription glasses
• Headgears - only for religious reasons

The processing time for the Swiss tourist visa application is dependent on the validity of the visa,  the number of applications at the embassy, as well as your previous travel history. HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISIT or A TOURIST VISA TO SWITZERLAND

This beautiful country is indeed everybody’s dream destination– whether for a vacation or for a place to live. If you are ready to tick this travel destination off your bucket list, here’s a guide on how to apply for a  Schengen Switzerland Visa.

An Overview of Schengen Visa for Short-term Stay in Switzerland

Switzerland is a part of the Schengen zone, composed of 26 European countries. To enter Switzerland (and any other countries in the Schengen zone), you must obtain a Schengen Visa first.  

If you are from the Philippines, you do need a Schengen visa to be able to enter and stay in Switzerland that will allow you to stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. 

Who is Eligible to Apply for a Schengen Visa to Switzerland?

If you are a Philippine passport holder and you are planning to apply for a Schengen visa, you must fulfill any of these conditions:

• Switzerland is your main destination . It means that you will visit Switzerland only and have no plans of visiting any other Schengen country ( sa Switzerland ka lang pupunta at mag-stay ); or
• You will stay the longest in Switzerland . You have plans of traveling around the Schengen Area, but Switzerland is where you will be staying the longest. ( Pupunta ka pa sa ibang Schengen countries, pero sa Switzerland ang pinaka-mahabang stay mo ).
• The main purpose of your travel is in Switzerland . You have plans of visiting other Schengen countries, but the focus of your travel is in Switzerland.
• Switzerland is your port of entry . You have plans of visiting multiple Schengen countries for the same number of days, but Switzerland is your first point of entry.

Important Documents to Prepare

First things first—you need documents to support your visa application! Depending on your circumstance, click the symbol ‘▼‘ below to view the corresponding requirements for each section and the proper order that they need to be in. Make sure that you have authentic, original, and complete documents at all times. For the copies, you must submit them in A4 paper format.

For this, you will need to prepare these documents:

1.  A duly filled out and signed  Schengen Visa Application Form for Switzerland . You may download the form by signing up  here .

2.   Two current biometrical passport photos (35-45 mm width) – have your passport photo taken. The embassy is very strict on their photo specifications. Fortunately, they have a  page  on their official website dedicated to explaining this. Bring at least two copies or more, just in case. One photo should be glued to the application form. The second photo will be returned to you.

• Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or contact lenses, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
• The subject should have their mouth closed  (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows).  

After which, paste your photo on each of the electronic visa form that you completed online  (1 original and 1 photocopy of the form).

3. Original Passport and a Photocopy of it as well as the Bio Page – The embassy requires that your passport is valid for at least another three months on the date the visa application is submitted. It also must have two empty pages for them to stamp your passport. If you have renewed your passport, bring your old one/s with you. These are needed especially if you have previous overseas trips.

4. Travel Insurance  –  the coverage must be applied during the entire duration of the trip and must be valid for all Schengen countries. Coverage sum must be AT LEAST EUR 30,000 (Php 2.5 million or USD 50,000). I highly recommend Pioneer Insurance which you can avail yourself through me. 5.   A copy of your roundtrip flight reservation.  Do  NOT  buy flight tickets before the visa is issued because the Switzerland Embassy would NOT take any responsibility for the costs you’ll incur if your visa gets denied. We can assist you with a dummy ticket for your flight reservation requirement;  get it here !

6.  Proof of Accomodation, copy(ies).  These are confirmed hotel reservation(s) only for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen countries containing the name and contact details of the hotel(s) as well as the reservation number.

7.  Day-to-day Itinerary – At this part, it’s good practice to include a cover letter along with this itinerary document so that you can properly explain the purpose of your trip. We can help you plan your trip by availing our  itinerary service.

8. Proof of financial capacity  to show that you (or your sponsor) can support your expenses for the whole duration of your travel.

For those traveling without a sponsor:  this means that you will cover all your expenses during the entire duration of your travel.

• Bank statements  – must show records of the past six months. A bank statement shows your transactions in your account at a specific period. It will show debits (withdrawals, payments, taxes, service fees) and credits (deposits, interest earned.) Bank Statements can also be seen online especially if you have a registered account. There is no signature for the manager or a bank officer.
• Bank Certificate  – it is a confirmation by the branch manager or a bank officer that you have an existing account in their bank. It shows the account number, the type, and other details such as the opening date of your account, your account balance as of the date of request, and your average daily balance. 
• Other proof of income  (supporting documents) – although it is not really required, you can submit invoices and pay slip equivalent to prove that you earn enough to support this trip financially. 

9. Evidence of your rootedness in the Philippines  – Evidence of deep-rootedness a.k.a. strong family and social ties to your home country, is  one of the most critical requirements when applying for a Schengen Visa . It is what the Consul will look for in your visa application. So how do you prove that you are firmly established in the Philippines and that you will go back to your home country?

You need to convince them that you will return to the Philippines.  Insufficient evidence of deep-rootedness to your home country is also one of the chief reasons for visa denial.

• Employment or Work contract and bank account statements or payslips showing the transfer of your last six-monthly salaries 
• Certificate of Employment which should include the employer’s full name, complete address, telephone number with area code, details regarding the position, income, and employment duration
• Approved letter of approved leave signed by your employer (Leave of Absence letter)
• Optional: Signed No Objection Certificate which states that your employer has no objection for you to travel to Switzerland and that they have approved your leave request
• Most recent Income Tax Return 2316 (ITR) 
• Optional Supporting Documents: › Government Mandated Contributions – SSS, Pag-ibig, Philhealth Contributions › If with existing loan – SSS Loan or Pag-ibig Salary loan
• DTI Business Name Registration Certificate
• Barangay Business Clearance
• Mayor’s Business Permit from your Municipality where the business address has been registered
• Business activity of your company for the last 6 months – invoices and bank transactions
• Most recent Income Tax Return 2316 (ITR)
• Pension statement for the last 6 months
• Retirement Certification
• For Solo parents: › A copy of your birth certificate- PSA Authenticated › A copy of your child/children’s birth certificate- PSA Authenticated › Solo parent ID › Barangay Certification as Solo parent › Notarized Affidavit of Solo Parent with Undertaking › Money remittances to support your dependents
• For those who are supporting or watching over the health/well-being of the family: ›  A copy of my parent’s birth certificates- PSA Authenticated › If parents are already Senior Citizens: a copy of their Senior Citizen ID and Barangay Certification as Senior Citizens › If parents have sickness/ illness: Medical history of parents (diabetes, hypertension, etc.)
• Land titles
• Car registration certificates
• Deeds of Sale
• Joint affidavit of both parents or legal guardians granting consent
• Photocopies of the passports of both parents or legal guardians
• Birth certificate of the minor. Must be recent, original, and issued by PSA.
• DSWD Clearance , if the minor is not traveling with either parent or legal guardian
• Recent certificate of enrollment from the school
• Letter authorizing the student’s absence from school

10. Alien Certificate of Registration (ACR) & Re-Entry Permit, copy . This is ONLY if you’re a foreign national who has a valid residence in the Philippines.

11. If applicable, Valid Visa(s) to your next destination . This is ONLY if you’re NOT traveling back to the Philippines after your trip to Switzerland or the Schengen territories. As such, if your airline reservation and itinerary indicate the next destination to be a different country other than the Philippines, please provide proof of a valid visa for that destination.

Simply submit the requirements listed in  Category (A), except for item #11 . When it comes to  item #8: Proof of financial capacity > Personal Bank Statements , ask these from your guarantor/sponsor —  such could be your mom, dad, brother, sister, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, relative, a sponsoring company, etc.

NOTE:  If your sponsor values his/her privacy, he/she has the option of sending his/her financial documents directly to the Embassy and he can do this by post or e-mail (instead of you submitting them to VFS on your appointment date).

The following documents are  NOT  required, but it helps to submit them too:

• Letter that is written by your guarantor/sponsor indicating his/her relationship with you as well as confirming that he/she will be supporting all your travel expenses
• Your OWN bank statements, properties, etc. to help strengthen your financial solvency even more- If you maintain a bank account for a long time, better maintain it . Kahit na may sponsor ka, of course, plus points pa din sa visa application mo if idadagdag mo din bank statements mo, payslips from our employer, and other proof na financially capable ka din and most importantly, it proves deep rootedness as well.

In addition, you should also ensure that you submit the following for your Switzerland Schengen Visa application:

12. Additional Questionnaire .   This will actually be given to you during your appointment at VFS. Make sure that you fill out this form completely and truthfully and then submit it together with your other required documents.

13. Invitation Letter .  Your sponsor/guarantor must indicate in a signed letter: your general information  (name, birth date, exact address, relationship),  his/her details  (name and exact address), confirmation and reason of invitation, your duration of stay, and proof of accommodation.

14. Photocopy of Guarantor/Sponsor’s Passport.  It must be a valid passport.

NOTE:  If in case you are a Philippine national living or residing in a foreign country and you wish to avail a Schengen tourist visa, you can inquire with the appropriate Schengen Embassy in the country that you’re living in about the requirements and procedures that you need to take. (It’s highly likely that it will be the same).

Also, the Switzerland Embassy may request for more information or additional documents in order to verify the contents and truthfulness of the documents you’ve submitted; so, be prepared for a document examination.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Apply for a Schengen Visa to Switzerland

STEP 1: Determine the type of Swiss Schengen visa you need to apply for and have a look at the checklist of requirements to gather all the documents that you need to submit.

The first step is to determine which  visa type  you need, and check whether you’re eligible to apply for it.

You’ll also need to know the documents that you’ll have to submit along with your application,  how long the application might take  and fees you’ll have to pay.

Each application must comply with the guidelines applicable for your visa category.

If your documents are not in English, you may need to get translations prepared before applying.

STEP 2:  Complete the Schengen Visa Requirements  stated above (Important Documents to Prepare depending on the Visa Category you fall under) to begin with your visa application.  Once you are ready to apply, go to the  Embassy of Switzerland in the Philippines for more information.

All application will be assessed by the Embassy of Switzerland in Manila. The application must be submitted personally . It may also be submitted by any representative in instances wherein the applicant has a previous Schengen visa with VIS within the last 59 months on your preferred appointment date at the Switzerland Visa Application Centre in Manila between 07:00 – 14:00 (Monday – Friday) – except on the Public holidays. Applications can also be sent by the applicants chosen courier company as POSTAL APPLICATION  in instances wherein the applicant has a previous Schengen visa with VIS within the last 59 months.

STEP 3: Schedule your appointment online with VFS Global

When it comes to the Switzerland Embassy, they do visa applications via their external service provider , VFS Global . Unfortunately, you cannot just walk into their office to lodge an application because you need to book an appointment first online.

Here’s how you can secure a time slot:

• Visit the VFS website  here  and click the text that says ‘ New User ‘.
• You will be lead to a registration page where you need to create your own VFS account. Provide your first name, last name, email, contact number, and intended password for your account. Click the button that says ‘ Submit ‘ once done.
• The page will route you to the log-in page. Enter the email and password that you set up and click the ‘ Continue ‘ button.
• Under ‘ Select visiting country’ : Switzerland
• Under ‘ Select residing country’ : Philippines
• Under ‘ Select application center : Switzerland Visa Application – Manila
• Under ‘ Select visa category’ : Tourists (or ‘Visiting Family’ if applicable to you)
• Once you have input all the necessary information, click  ‘Continue ‘
• The next page will show the ‘ Applicant List’  page. If you’re applying together with family or friends, you can only add 4 more applicant data (other than you) on this page to schedule a group appointment.
• Proceed to click ‘ Add Applicant ‘ and input all your relevant details. Afterward, click ‘ Submit ‘ and proceed to secure your intended date for your appointment. Rest assured, there’s an option to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

STEP 4:   Pay the Visa Fee.  Once you have made your application, you will need to pay your visa application fee.

Include the original receipt in your application when you send it through postal/courier.

STEP 5: Submit your application at VFS on your appointment date. It helps to arrive early for your appointment. VFS is open from Mondays to Fridays, 7AM to 4PM (except public holidays) and their address for Manila is:

Submission of documents. Simply hand out your documents to the VFS staff and he/she will check the documents that you prepared and then ensure that everything is complete.

• If in case you have any missing documents, the staff will inform you about that.
• The person will provide you with a 3-page questionnaire which you have to answer in a small private room. It’s basically your interview but in written form.

US travelers hoping to visit the beautiful beaches of Brazil will have to acquire a visa first beginning in 2025 — meaning they’ll have to share their bank statements with the South American country.

Beginning April 10, 2025, Brazil-bound travelers from the US, Canada and Australia need to be approved for a visa before their trip, CNN reported .

The application includes providing proof of income by either showing their last three checking or savings account statements or their previous six pay stubs, according to the Brazilian government’s website . Those who do not meet the threshold of $2,000 or more will need a sponsor.

Fortunately, the application process for an e-visa can be done online rather than at a consulate in person.

The visa fee is $80.90 with a 10-year validity and stays are limited to 90 days per year, the US Consulate in Brazil announced .

Additionally, Americans must provide a letter of intent outlining the duration and purpose of their trip and include information about where they will be staying.

They additionally must prove their US citizenship and show return tickets.

Brazil is reinstating the visa requirement for US tourists, who until 2019 had needed visas, according to CNN.

E-visas were introduced for just one year before the entire system was completely abolished.

Processing times for the Brazil visa system will be an average of five working days but officials “strongly recommend” applying two months before a trip.

The Brazilian Embassy and US State Department did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

For Brazilians planning to travel to the US, the process is much more complex, and visa systems between countries typically are established based on reciprocity, CNN reported.

Nearly all Brazilians must schedule an in-person visa appointment at their nearest embassy and prove they have the financial means to afford their planned trip. The visa costs $185.

Between January and September 2023, some 483,000 Americans visited Brazil — second only to its neighbor Argentina, according to TravelPulse.

Last year, the European Union decided to delay its controversial pre-travel program for American travelers, set to begin last May, until 2025 after several roadblocks.

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System , of ETIAS, will apply to visitors without visas from 60 countries, including the US, UK and Canada.

The program is needed to enter 30 European countries , including Spain, Germany, France and Greece.

Applicants must provide passport information, and personal info such as their place of birth and their parents’ first names, education level, current occupation, anticipated trip details and any criminal convictions.

It also entails an $8 fee.

ETIAS visas are valid for three years or until your passport expires. Visitors can enter European countries as often as they want for short-term stays — typically for up to 90 days in an 180-day period.

2024 is shaping up to be the year of travel reprieves.

Hot on the heels of the European Union postponing (again) its much-mooted ETIAS program, which will require visitors from most non-EU countries to obtain pre-travel clearance, Brazil has pushed back the start of its new visa system for travellers from the US, Canada and Australia.

However, if 2024 is the year of the reprieve, 2025 is when everything will hit home. And for travellers from those three countries heading to Brazil, it'll hit home, hit their bank balances – and require them to share their bank statements, too.

ETIAS is slated to start in 2025 and Brazil has now confirmed a start date for its visa program.

From April 10, 2025, citizens from Australia, Canada and the US will need a visa to enter the country. On the plus side, those travelling for tourism or cruise travel can apply for an evisa online, rather than visiting a consulate.

The cost will be $124 AUD, but the visa will be valid for 10 years and across multiple entries. Stays are limited to 90 days per year. The visa was previously due to be introduced in 2024 – or, rather, reintroduced.

Until 2019, travellers to Brazil were required to get visas – with evisas introduced only a year before the system was abolished completely.

Applicants will also need to provide additional information, according to the Brazilian government's website . Proof of residence in the US, and return tickets to Brazil (or, if not, a signed return declaration), and proof of income will also be required.

The latter takes the form of the last three checking or savings account statements, or your last six payslips, and travellers will need an average of at least $2,000 ($3,058 AUD) showing in their account. Those who don't meet the requirements must get a sponsor to sign for them, showing their finances instead.

While it sounds complex, visa systems tend to work on reciprocity and it's a similar situation for Brazilians travelling to the US – only worse.

Currently, almost all Brazilian citizens must schedule a visa appointment at their nearest embassy, and show that they have the means to pay for their entire proposed trip. A visa to the US – even for those transiting – costs $185.

Processing times for the Brazil visa system will be an average of five working days although VFS – the company handling applications – "strongly recommends" applying two months ahead of travel.

Brazil saw nearly six million arrivals in 2023, with 483,000 US citizens visiting in the first nine months of the year alone. That puts US visitors second only to Argentinians, according to travel trade publication TravelPulse .
