Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park , on the Pacific coast, offers a unique blend of rainforest and beach landscapes. Hike through verdant trails and spot monkeys, sloths, and exotic butterflies. Afterward, cool off with a swim in the Pacific Ocean.

One of the most enchanting aspects of a Costa Rica rainforest tour is the diverse range of wildlife you can encounter.

Costa Rica is renowned for its slow-moving inhabitants, both two-toed and three-toed. These slow-moving creatures can often be spotted hanging from trees, making them a must-see for wildlife enthusiasts.

In the wetlands and rivers of Costa Rica, keep an eye out for the formidable American crocodile. Boat tours are a great way to observe these ancient reptiles safely.

The treetops come alive with capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, and spider monkeys, each with their own captivating antics.

Many bird species

With over 900 species of birds, Costa Rica is a birdwatcher's utopia. Keep your binoculars handy for encounters with the magnificent resplendent quetzal, toucans, parrots, and countless other avian treasures.

Costa Rica Rainforest Tours & Travel

Costa Rica Rainforest Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Costa Rica is famous worldwide for the rich biodiversity of its magnificent rainforests. With zip-lining, canopy tours, hiking, and much more, Costa Rica's rainforests offer something unique to satisfy all nature and wildlife-lovers.

Touring the rainforest, especially in Costa Rica, a whole new world opens up. The vibrant green from centuries of dense water concentration, the intensely beautiful magical sight when the sun manages to break through to the forest floor, the innumerable species of brightly colored birds, monkeys racing deftly through the branches, and countless insects buzzing - all indicating clearly that you are being welcomed into their home, not the other way around.

When you tour Costa Rica , it is an incredible learning opportunity to get to know the history and ecology of it’s many natural areas, and the wildlife within them. Take this chance to get up close and personal with endangered species, and nature’s unbelieveable adaptations to life in the Rainforest.

Rainforests of Costa Rica

For such a small country, Costa Rica is home to numerous rainforests - each exhibiting the fantastically specific microclimates that this particular environment is known for. When you visit the rainforest, it’s important to be respectful of the environment. Because so much of Costa Rica is covered in rainforest, a vast majority of accommodations and businesses operate following strict green and eco-friendly rules.

Some of the main rainforests in Costa Rica include:

1. Tortuguero National Park - Named for the turtles who head here to nest, the best time to visit Tortuguero is July through October which is turtle nesting season. If you come in the off season, however, there’s still plenty to see and do. Boat trips down river canals through the bright green forest are a popular way to get a different view of the rainforest and the many species that make their home there. (Tortuguero is often likened to Venice for its canal system). This is one of the rainiest jungles in Costa Rica, so pack accordingly!

2. Corcovado National Park - located in the Osa Peninsula, this is one of the best places to spot Scarlet Macaws, which are famous for their monogamous mating patterns. This lowland rainforest is set apart so you may also spot other traditionally elusive creatures, including Harpy Eagles and Red Backed Squirrels. Corcovado also encompasses several miles of coastal beach areas, hikes, and is popular for camping.

3. Monteverde Cloud Forest - Popular especially for it’s hanging bridges, hiking trails, and zip lines, the Monteverde Cloud Forest is a common Costa Rica tour activity. It’s here you’ll be most likely to spot the elusive Quetzal, one of South America’s most famous bird species.

Monteverde is one of the best areas for night hikes, as well as for being eye level with the canopy on one of the many hanging bridges. This is perfect for cloud forests - where most of the animal activity is high in the trees, as close as possible to the sun which rarely penetrates the cloud cover, leading to some of the more unique ecological flora and fauna adaptations along the forest floor.

4. Manuel Antonio - For some of the most spectacular scenery in Costa Rica, head to Manuel Antonio. Particularly for the beaches with pristine sand and blue waters, bordered just inland with gorgeous green rainforest. With this comes the resort caveat - this won’t be the most rustic or set apart kind of experience. But if you’re looking for a place to enjoy the delicious fresh air, sounds of lapping waves and distant bird calls of Costa Rica with a cocktail in your hand, this is your paradise.

5. Rincon de la Vieja National Park - Secluded, and definitely off the beaten track, Rincon de la Vieja National Park is perfect for those looking for an adventure. Prepare for a hiking experience where you may well not run into another human being the entire time. Just you and the animals - this also makes this a great spot for photographers and videographers.

6. Arenal Volcano National Park - You may think the volcano is the main thing to see here, and in many ways it is in that it can be spotted rising out of the trees from almost every vantage point in the park. On a clear day, that is. Something not everyone realizes before visiting Arenal is that it’s often shrouded in clouds, and for the safety of tourists hikes up to the top of the volcano (which is still active) are no longer permitted. But don’t despair. Tours of Arenal National Park offer a rich array of activities, from horseback riding to waterfall rappelling.

Wildlife of the Costa Rica Rainforest

From big cats to the smallest birds and bugs, Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s most diverse animal species.

1. Big Cats - One usually thinks of rainforests and thinks brightly colored birds and flowers, along with a monkey or two. It’s easy to forget the jungle cats who also make their home in these sprawling landscapes. Two big cats in particular are indigenous to Costa Rica: Jaguar and  Puma. While your chances of spotting these jungle dwellers on your Costa Rica rainforest tour are slim, your guide will provide context to why these environments suit them and their hunting habits.

2. Tapir - One of the natures funniest looking creatures, tapir are a medium sized mammal recognizable by their short snout and pig like body shape. Tapir are notoriously shy, and have been brought back from the brink of extinction due to extensive conservation efforts. Head to Corcovado National Park for the best chance to glimpse one of these truly unique members of the animal kingdom.

3. Monkeys - Four species of monkey live in the rainforests of Costa Rica. They are the Squirrel Monkey, Spider Monkey, White Faced Capuchin Monkey, and Howler Monkey. To see all four at once you’ll need to visit any one of the following Costa Rica National Parks: Piedras Blancas, Osa Peninsula, and Corcovado. These monkey species are not nocturnal, so you’ll be able to spot them swinging joyfully through the trees as you embark on your Costa Rica rainforest tour.

Birds of the Costa Rica Rainforest

Birding is one of the most popular tour activities in Costa Rica, and for good reason. The brightly colored avians are everywhere to be seen and the forests are home to hundreds of rare and beautiful species. Among those you might encounter are:

1. Toucan - This unique yet highly recognizable bird is literally everywhere in Costa Rica. They are an essential partners to the many species of tree in the rainforest, consuming seeds which they then disperse. This is helpful for the growing patterns, in that there is less competition for sunlight than if the seeds had just dropped straight down.

2. Parrots - A synonymous symbol for the tropics, there are 16 different species of parrot in Costa Rica’s rainforests, three of which are close to the endangered species list. They are typically found in the lower lands, namely around the Osa Peninsula rainforests.

3. Quetzal  - This most beautiful, alluring, and elusive of birds, the Quetzal is truly a famous rainforest dweller. It’s name meaning “sacred” or “precious” in indigenous south american languages including ancient Aztec, this species is particularly known for the ridged crest of feathers atop its head - which add to its regal appearance.

4. Hummingbirds - The world contains over 600 known species of hummingbird, 50 plus of which live in Costa Rica. You will undoubtedly see multiple hummingbirds during your Costa Rica Rainforest Tour. Flitting to and fro, their tiny wings moving at tremendous speeds, they consume more flower nectar than their body weight each day. Visit the Hummingbird Garden in Monteverde National Park for a chance to watch multiple hummingbirds in action.

Top Costa Rica Rainforest Tour Activities

The rainforest in Costa Rica provides the opportunity for incredible experiences, from learning about the unique ecology, to long hikes to the clouds, to spotting elusive creatures. Here are just a few of the amazing experiences you can have on a tour of Costa Rica.

1. Canopy Tours - Costa Rica offers some of the widest variety in canopy tour opportunities - a fantastic way to get to know the rainforest from a completely new vantage point. If you’re afraid of heights, or have a problem with swinging bridges, this activity may pose some challenges.

The longest rainforest canopy bridge in Costa Rica is 984 feet across and is located in Monteverde, a part of the Sky Walk network of bridges. Hanging bridge networks can be found throughout Costa Rica’s rainforests, and are perhaps one of the most quintessential Costa Rica tour experiences.

Nearly 90% of organisms in the rainforest live in the canopy - a result of the lack of sunlight that penetrates to the forest floor - and if it does, it happens far too irregularly for the animals living here to depend on it. For this reason, exploring the canopy completely adds to your experience of the rainforest, allowing you to see so much more activity.

2. Zipline - Another adventurous way to experience the rainforest canopy, Costa Rica is famous for ziplines. This activity involves soaring through the trees, attached by ropes from around your waist to a long line strung between platforms. It’s a thrilling experience - imagine that you’re getting just a tiny idea what the fast moving monkeys and other tree dwelling creatures see as they race through the branches.

3. Night Hike - The activity in the rainforest doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. In fact some of the more bizarre, elusive, and fascinating creatures come out at night. Seeing the rainforest through a flashlight is an entirely different experience than walking the trails and bridges during the day. For one thing, you feel far less in control as your vision is obstructed and you realize that the wildlife you’re observing can see far superiorly in the dark. It’s unsettling but a fantastic reminder of the adaptability and power of nature.

On a night hike, you’ll likely encounter sloths, the ridiculously adorable Kinkajou, Olingos - which look like a combination of many different animals, as well as racoons, and the odd active monkey. For those interested in creepy crawlies, snakes, poisonous tree frogs, insects as only the rainforest can provide, and giant tarantulas are also common on a Costa Rica night hike tour.

Night hikes in Costa Rica are particular popular and easy to find around Arenal Volcano and in Monteverde National Park.

Photography Tips for the Costa Rica Rainforest

The rainforest is fascinating and begs to be photographed. Whether you’re an amateur or professional, you will certainly find many different subjects along your tour through the rainforest. The weather and water can sometimes create issues, so be sure you exercise proper camera care as you explore the many wonderful parts of the rainforest.

1. Bring a lens cloth - And have it readily accessible before you begin shooting. Jungle environments are often 100% humid, and this can cause extreme fogging on your lens. While this can create interesting effects, it’s most likely not the effect you’re looking for.

2. Use a strap that’s made of soft, durable, water-resistant material. This is a bit a personal preference. However, as you’ll be hiking through dense rainforest, in very warm, humid weather, getting sweatier and not drying off, the generic strap to your DSLR may get irritating and itchy quickly. You can fashion your own strap fairly easily, using a softer cloth material which will be much more comfortable throughout the long days of rainforest hiking.

3. Get to know the animals. Familiarizing yourself with various species patterns and habits will reveal certain facets of their personalities you may want to capture on film, as well as where the best spots to find them are, and what time of day or night. Also try to determine in advance any animals you’re looking forward to photographing and ask your tour guide if they have any special tips.

4. Bring a macro lens. If you’re not as comfortable with different lenses, using the automatic macro setting on your DSLR will suffice, but using the official lens will transform your photographs even more. Particularly for shooting the unbelievable plant and insect life, being able to add creative focal points and composition with a macro lens is a wonderful way to elevate your photos.

5. Be respectful and patient. It can be frustrating for a wild animal to not sit in the perfect spot long enough for you to get the best shot possible. But patience is a virtue when it comes to wildlife photography. Try and book a tour that will return to various spots at different times of day, as this will increase your chances of capturing a truly wonderful image of that elusive species.

6. Don’t eliminate people from all your photos. While the wildlife is certainly the focal point of a journey through the rainforest, a human presence can create a powerful and interesting dynamic. Your entire comment and composition will change, and also you’ll be able to look back and remember the people on your Costa Rica rainforest tour (hopefully with fondness!).

In the Caribbean side, the dry season is from July to October, keep in mind Costa Rica is a tropical country rain showers any time of the year, and it is cooler in the mountains than in the lowlands. Between May to November is our “green season”. The forest especially in the Pacific side changes a lot from dry to a more lush green forest due rain. We encourage you to visit between May to July, few rain showers and prices are lower and less people.

Our tour with Adventure Tours Costa Rica was simply amazing! We spent time in Jaco, Monteverde, and La Fortuna. Every part of our journey was memorable and well-planned. Every person we met along the way from Adventure Tours was friendly and helpful, making sure we had the best experience possible. Adventure tours also had no problem personalizing the tour for us (e.g. we didn't want to drive our own ATVs, we were not interested in ziplining). Everything ran smoothly and on time: no unpleasant surprises! We had the time of our lives--an experience we will never forget. We are so glad we chose Adventure Tours Costa Rica as the way to be introduced to the amazing country of Costa Rica. We cannot wait to come back!

Sloth Tour Costa Rica

Tour Details

The sloth tour lasts approximately 1 hour with an approximate distance of 1.4 kilometers.

It is important to mention that our trails are designed so that they can be traveled by people of all ages and do not represent a major physical effort.

There are only three steps for people who want to take a photo in a tree.

During this Sloth Tour in Costa Rica it is possible to observe several animals. The 2-clawed and 3-clawed sloths, masked frogs, KOLBI and BLUEJEANS.

Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

costa rica rainforest tours

Home » Things to do » Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

The jungles, swamps, and mangroves of Costa Rica are awe-inspiring – no matter how many times you’ve seen them. Constant sunlight, abundant rains, and the high temperatures are a recipe for biological diversity. These complex biological ecosystems contain dense foliage, massive trees, and more than half of all the living things known to man. A trip down the mangrove canals will reveal a surprising number of wading birds (they can gather in flocks up to the thousands), curious iguanas and monkeys keeping watch from tree limbs, and the occasional tapir pushing through the undergrowth.

Costa Rica Jungle Day Tours:

Despite the thick undergrowth of a jungle, hiking tours are a great way to get up close and personal with nature. Naturalist guides are strongly recommended in order to spot the elusive wildlife and learn about the complicated relationships between the flora and fauna of the Costa Rica jungle. A jungle kayak or cruising adventure is another way to discover the untouched beauty of Costa Rica. Kayaking is a fantastic way to reach some of the most remote and wild mangrove environments. Without a motor, travelers might get to spot some of the more elusive tropical creatures.

Corcovado National Park Tour, Osa Peninsula

Best Jungle and Mangrove Tours in Costa Rica

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is the largest lowland rainforest in Central America and the most remote rainforest in Costa Rica. The park covers nearly half of the entire Osa Peninsula and is home to exotic species such as scarlet macaws, all 4 Costa Rican monkey species, and the endangered jaguar. Nearly every jungle lodge in and around Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez can book a guided day tour to Corcovado. Hike along the shoreline or right into the jungle to explore the most remote tropical forest in the country.

Tarcoles River Cruise, Central Pacific Coast

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

One of our most popular adventures brings you to the Tarcoles River within Carara National Park on the Central Pacific Coast , home to some of the largest populations of crocodiles in the world! Male crocodiles can weight up to a ton and reach 20 feet in length! While cruising along the Tarcoles River, you will see them swimming or sunbathing on the river banks. Available as an en route tour from Arenal Volcano to Manuel Antonio, this tour is a great opportunity to get (not too) close to these immense creatures while continuing on your exploration of Costa Rica. Another option is to simply stop off at the famous Crocodile Bridge over the Tarcoles River to see the wild crocodiles for a quick stop off!

Damas Island Estuary Kayak or Boat Tour, Manuel Antonio

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Damas Island Estuary is located outside  Manuel Antonio National Park  and the town of Quepos. From crocodiles and sloths to monkeys and iguanas, these mangrove waterways are teeming with wildlife like crocodiles, herons, sloths, monkeys, and more! A professional naturalist guide will lead you through the estuary by boat or kayak. Following your tour, enjoy a traditionally prepared Costa Rican meal. Tours are available during the day and in the evenings.

Tamarindo Estuary Kayaking Tour, Guanacaste

Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Grande, the Playa Grande Estuary empties into the bay of Tamarindo. A professional naturalist will guide you through the unique estuary ecosystem, pointing out the highlights and wildlife in the area. This tour can be done in single or double kayaks. An hour into your adventure, grab a snack on the riverbank.

Costa Rica Jungle Overnights:

One of the best ways to explore all of the beauty of Costa Rica is a few nights stay at one of the country’s jungle lodges. Several of the eco-lodges in our collection are accessible only via boat or flight. This makes reaching your destination an adventure in itself. See the country from an aerial angle on a domestic flight and/or take a boat to your destination looking for wildlife!

Osa Peninsula

5 Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours

Peruse the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve on the remote Osa Peninsula by boat or kayak through dense jungle estuaries.

Many jungle lodges are located on or near the remote Osa Peninsula – the southwesternmost point of Costa Rica which also happens to contain one of the largest remaining tracts of tropical rainforest in Central America. This important region is home to literally hundreds of species, many endangered and is the perfect place for explorations into untouched jungles and rainforest. The Diquis Delta near Drake Bay, the Sierpe River Mouth  of the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve, and the G0lfo Dulce  are mangrove highlights of the region. Boat transportation down-estuary waterways to the lodges of Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula introduce guests to the huge variety of ecosystems that can be found, and it’s an extra chance for wildlife watching. Bird-lovers, in particular, should check out the Osa Peninsula. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica for bird-watching and is one of the richest and most diverse tropical zones in the world.

Tortuguero National Park

5 Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours

Queen Egret

Known as the Amazon of Costa Rica,  Tortuguero National Park is a jungle highlight. While primarily known for the sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs between March and mid-October, Tortuguero’s intricate maze of mangrove waterways creates a completely unique cacophony of jungle undergrowth! A professional naturalist guide will point out the exotic flora and fauna of the area from the comfort of a boat with a quiet motor. Howler monkeys, anteaters, sloths, jaguars, and over 350 bird species call this region of Costa Rica home. These maze-like waterways are the perfect paths for kayak and boat adventures.

How to See the Best of Costa Rica’s Rain Forests — From Mesmerizing Cloud Forests to Tropical Oases Bursting With Wildlife

Here’s your definitive guide to the many rain forests of Costa Rica, including when to go and what to pack.

costa rica rainforest tours

What Is a Rain Forest?

Travel tips and when to visit, costa rica’s must-see national parks and rain forests.

Rain is not what we usually look for on a vacation — unless we’re exploring Costa Rica, where rain forests make up more than 50% of the country’s area. And while there are dry as well as rainy seasons, the effects of weather can be seen year-round in the trees, plants, birds, and wildlife of this fascinating country. Costa Rica truly is rich in beauty, and visitors can appreciate it whether they choose a camping adventure or a stay at a plush lodge.

Michela Buttignol/Travel + Leisure

Rain forests come in a variety of forms, and Costa Rica is home to six different types, highlighting the country’s biodiversity and providing habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna specific to each locale.

Tropical rain forests are lush, wet areas with dense canopies and massive trees where wildlife thrives from the forest floor to the branches above, with more than 200 inches of rain annually. Tropical dry forests — yes, sounds like a contradiction — receive less rainfall. They’re located on lower elevations and in parts of Costa Rica that are drier, mainly in the Nicoya and Guanacaste regions. Lowland Rain forests feature wet, hot weather, rivers, streams, tall trees, and short dry seasons.

Cloud forests, with their ethereal name and appearance, are found at high elevations where they are shrouded in low-hanging clouds and fog. Located near bodies of water and marshland, Riparian Forests are humid, providing habitats for both aquatic and land animals. Also near water, mangrove swamps form where freshwater and saltwater meet and where forests transition from dry to wet.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Diego Oviedo, general manager at Botánika Osa Peninsula located on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, pointed out that National Geographic described the Osa Peninsula’s tropical lowland rain forest as “the most biologically intense place on earth.” “This type of lowland rain forest is the perfect destination for families, honeymooners, birdwatchers, photographers, and adventure travelers, as well as those looking for a secluded and relaxing place to stay,”  he said.

At Origins Luxury Lodge , set high on a mountainside in northern Costa Rica, naturalist Juan Pablo Potoy takes guests on walking tours through the rain forest at night to see nocturnal birds and amphibians, reptiles, and mammals: “You hear the songs of the different species — a true concert in nature.”

Packing Tip

Pack rain gear, ponchos, rubber boots or closed shoes that are good for hiking and walking, insect repellent, sunblock, binoculars, and reusable water bottles.

Both Potoy and Oviedo advise guests to prepare for their rain forest tours by wearing rain gear, ponchos, rubber boots or closed shoes that are good for hiking and walking, insect repellent, and sunblock. They also suggest bringing binoculars and water bottles. When touring any of Costa Rica’s rain forests, guides are helpful for safety, but also for pointing out and identifying birds and wildlife along the way.

Is there an ideal time to visit? Opinions vary. “Although most visitors prefer our dry season between November and April, the truth is that any time can be a good time to visit the rain forests of Costa Rica,” Oviedo said. “For example, our rainiest months are September and October, but that also happens to be the best time to see the humpback whales and their baby whales in the Golfo Dulce.” Potoy suggested visiting between the months of February and May. So, there you go — whenever you visit Costa Rica, it will be the right time depending on what you’re after.

Costa Rica protects its rain forests and wildlife by creating national parks and conservation areas to preserve them for residents, visitors, and future generations. More than 25% of Costa Rica consists of national parks and protected regions. As diverse as the country itself, many of the parks contain several different types of rain forests. These are just a few of the nearly 30 national parks to consider for your visit to Costa Rica.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Manuel Antonio is the country’s smallest and one of its most popular national parks. The park includes beaches and lush tropical rain forest, with snorkeling and diving in coral reefs along its shores and hiking in the forest. Visitors can see sloths, iguanas, coatis, raccoons, and many species of birds, as well as howler, white-faced, and capuchin monkeys. With a guided tour, visitors can explore the rain forest along easy access trails for about three hours with an experienced, bilingual naturalist, certified by the Costa Rican Tourism Board. The closest major airport is San Jose, about a three-hour drive away. The town of Quepos, with hotels, shops, and restaurants, is about four miles from the entrance to the park.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Jess MacDonald/Travel + Leisure

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located about four hours northwest of San Jose in the Tilaran Mountain range at an elevation of about 5,000 feet. Rich in biodiversity, Monteverde is home to more than 3,200 species of plants, 500 species of orchids, 425 species of birds, 120 species of mammals, 60 species of amphibians, and 101 species of reptiles. The reserve is open from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m, year round, and visitors can take tours or stay in the nearby town of Santa Elena, a short drive away. Night tours, zip lines, and hanging bridges let visitors experience an array of wildlife. The rainy season runs from May until November, with October the wettest month and March the driest.

Corcovado National Park

Javi J./Getty Images

Located on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica’s South Pacific region about 60 miles from San Jose, Corcovado includes cloud forest, lowland tropical rain forest, mangrove swamps, beaches, and waterfalls. One of the world’s most biodiverse places, Corcovado is home to more than 360 species of birds, 140 species of mammals, and 117 species of amphibians and reptiles. Scarlet macaws, harpy eagles, tapirs, crocodiles, and four species of monkeys — howler, spider, capuchin, and squirrel monkeys — live there along with anteaters, sloths, jaguars, pumas, and red-eyed tree frogs. Visitors should note that they need to have a certified licensed guide and an entrance permit in order to enter the park. The only place for overnight stays in the park is at the La Sirena Ranger Station on the Pacific Coast, and reservations are required. Outside of the park, visitors can stay nearby in the town of Drake Bay.

Cahuita National Park

This national park includes tropical lowland wet rain forest, mangrove swamp, beach, and coral reefs. Located on the Caribbean coast, Cahuita protects more than 2,600 acres of land. A marked five-mile hiking trail through the forest is the only way to explore its abundant wildlife. Visitors can spot green ibis, herons, toucans, hawks, kingfishers, and the Central American curassow, a large pheasant-like bird. Coati, raccoons, sloths, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, armadillos, iguanas, lizards, and snakes also live in the park. The closest major town is Puerto Viejo, about 10 miles away, and the small town of Cahuita is within walking distance to the park’s entrance. Cahuita National Park is open every day from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. From San Jose International Airport, the drive to the park is about three hours, and organized day trips are available.

Arenal Volcano National Park

Caroline Brundle Bugge/Getty Images

Arenal National Park is located in the northwestern part of Costa Rica near the town of La Fortuna about three hours from San Jose. The park covers nearly 30,000 acres and includes an active volcano, Mount Arenal, and Cerro Chato, which has been inactive for more than three thousand years. Visitors can explore the park’s nearly 30,000 acres of rain forest in a variety of ways from hiking the trails to soaring over the canopy on zip lines or walking along hanging bridges among the treetops. For a relaxing tour, ride a Sky Tram gondola or float through the rain forest along the Rio Penas Blancas on an inflatable raft. More than 850 species of birds live in the park, including the colorful quetzal, and wildlife includes jaguar, monkeys, coati, tapirs, and deer. Day trips are available from the popular tourist area of Guanacaste.

Tortuguero National Park

Norbert Achtelik/Canvan Images/Getty Images

This national park is unique in that there are no roads, and visitors explore its wildlife by boat along canals, rivers, lagoons, and mangrove swamps. Located on Costa Rica’s northeast Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park protects a large area of lowland tropical rain forest as well as the sea turtles that give the park its name. ( Tortuga is the Spanish word for turtle.) The wet, humid area receives up to 250 inches of rain annually. More than 20 miles of coastline provide nesting areas for turtles, and the most common species, the green turtle, nests from June to October. Licensed guides take guests on night tours, with dark clothing and minimal lighting to protect the turtles. Visitors can also see birds, monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, manatees, jaguars, and more. Flights are available from San Jose, or visitors can drive to La Pavona and then arrive at the park by boat.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park

Kryssia Campos/Getty Images

In this ecologically diverse national park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can see an active volcano, waterfalls, freshwater lagoon, rivers, hot springs, mud pots, and an array of wildlife. Less than an hour from Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, Rincón de la Vieja includes a cloud forest, dry forest, savannah, lowlands, and rain forest. Sloths, monkeys, kinkajous, tapirs, deer, jaguar, and puma make the park their home, along with more than 300 bird species and an abundance of Costa Rica’s national flower, the guaria morada or purple orchid. Hiking trails, campgrounds, guided tours, horseback rides, white water rafting trips, river cruises, and zip lines are ways to explore. Many visitors end their days with a relaxing soak in one of the park’s hot springs.

Carara National Park

Bob Hilscher/Getty Images

Located about two hours from San Jose on the Central Pacific coast, Carara National Park is known as a great destination for birdwatching. As a transition zone between tropical dry forest and tropical rain forest, the park offers habitats for birds from both types of environments. Scarlet macaws, toucans, grebes, trogons, herons, and endangered species attract ornithologists and birdwatchers. Carara is also known for crocodiles which can be seen from Crocodile Bridge over the Tarcoles River, the northern boundary of the park. Sloths, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, armadillo, deer, and anteaters are among the park’s wildlife. The park is a convenient day trip from San Jose, and it features a universal access path and two hiking trails. Camping is not permitted in the park. During the wettest months from August to October, trails near the river may be impassable due to flooding.

Guanacaste National Park

This diverse park , located in Costa Rica’s northwest, connects Santa Rosa National Park with the high elevation cloud forest of Orosi and Cacao volcanoes. In addition to the cloud forest, the park includes a range of climate zones from dry forest to tropical rain forest. Visitors explore the park on its hiking trails, and wildlife includes monkeys, squirrels, deer, jaguars, mountain lions, along with a wide variety of birdlife. The nearest city is La Cruz, about a mile from the park’s Pitilla area. Restrooms, trails, and an information center are available, and with advance permission, visitors can hike to the top of the volcano. This part of Costa Rica is generally hotter, and the dry season goes from December to April.

5. Tropical Dry Forest Tour

Guanacaste National Park is situated on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. It was originally created as a biological corridor for the migration of birds and insects between the dry forests, cloud forests, and rainforests. The founder of Guanacaste Park also had the vision of encouraging locals to become involved in Costa Rica environmental programs.

This is a tropical dry forest ideal for hiking, nature walks, and bird watching. If visiting in the afternoon, guests should be ready for a short rainfall (especially during the rainy season that lasts May through November).

Tours along Guanacaste National Park trails interweave through several ecosystems as the elevation increases from the Pacific Ocean up to Orosi and Cacao volcanoes. You can even hike up and across the Continental Divide which will lead to a typical Costa Rica rainforest.

The most popular Costa Rica wildlife visitors see in the dry forest include howler monkeys, white-tailed deer, long-tongued bats, and capuchin monkeys. Birds such as the Orange-Fronted Parakeet and Crested Caracara are common and easy to spot up in the trees as well.

Chances are, if you’re going to Costa Rica, you’re already expecting to hit the capital city of San José. This vibrant cultural hub serves as the epicenter of the nation’s tourism, providing tons of excellent museums, high-end restaurants, and safe hotel stays for visitors from around the world. While navigating the streets of San José, be sure to take in different samples of the country’s finest cuisine in between downtown strolls, dance lessons, and a few sightseeing stops. The city is located in a green and vibrant basin surrounded by large, imposing mountains. It offers some impeccable scenery for those interested in touring the diverse ecosystem throughout San José and beyond. Bucket list items for a day-trip through the city include indulging in some locally-sourced coffee and some flavorful empanadas, as well as checking out the Toucan Rescue Ranch just outside of town.

If you’re looking to stray away from the luxurious offerings of the city and find something a bit more rural, you’ll certainly want to take a day trip to the Caño Negro district of Alajuela Province. This wetland area, which is situated near the Nicaraguan border, is a roughly 4-hour car ride from San José, and offers an incredibly diverse network of rivers, forests, and wildlife preserves . Animal lovers can keep an eye out for rare species’ such as the giant anteater, emerald basilisk, and Jabiru stork, while nature lovers can take in the fresh, humid air of the flooded wetland forests. Just remember to keep a careful eye on your surroundings, as you never know when a dangerous creature such as a jaguar or a fully grown caiman could be creeping up behind you.

Caño Negro is also home to a number of boat tours, for those who aren’t as confident in their navigation skills as the Crocodile Hunter. These guided trips through the wilderness allow visitors of Costa Rica to immerse themselves in the unique wilderness without needing to stress the finer details of their day-trip to Caño Negro.

Guanacaste Coast

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Costa Rican Vacations (@costaricanvacations)

While it’s always a blast to take in the beautiful scenery of a foreign nation, maybe you’re not the type who enjoys wrestling their lunch from the jaws of a terrifying reptile. Luckily, Costa Rica is positively loaded with beautiful landscapes for you to explore, that don’t require you to be an overt animal lover to enjoy. One such region is the Guanacaste Coast, where golden sand beaches give way to crashing ocean surf, perfect for a relaxing day at the beach. Like the Caño Negro district, the Guanacaste Coast is a solid handful of hours by car outside the city, though you certainly won’t regret making the effort to get there.

At the Guanacaste Coast, the turquoise water of the North Pacific provides excellent space to wade, swim, and surf, while the clean beaches offer some ideal real estate for relaxation. Those who love to remain on the move at all times during their vacation can also book sailing and snorkeling expeditions in the region, for a chance to interact with deep-sea marine life including dolphins, whales, and sea turtles.

Sarapiquí Region

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Edventure Travel (@edventurecostarica)

For something a little closer to the city, visitors of Costa Rica can enjoy the winding rivers and fascinating wildlife of Sarapiquí, which is located in Heredia Province just an hour out of San José. This is the best corner of the nation to venture into Costa Rica’s dense network of rainforests, which serve as a home to a wide array of exotic species of animals. A day trip through the Sarapiquí Region all but guarantees sightings of three-toed sloths, howler monkeys, and more tropical birds than you can count.

But this region isn’t just about interacting with the local flora and fauna, as the Sarapiquí Region also offers a number of exciting excursions, including fresh pineapple farms which offer refreshments and tours to tourists from around the globe. You can also pop into the Tirimbina Biological Reserve to learn more about conservation efforts in the region, and cross over the longest suspension bridge in the nation while touring the rainforest’s vibrant ecosystem.

Guayabo National Monument

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Horizontes Nature Tours (@horizontesnaturetourscr)

If you’re not particularly interested in the ocean surf and the humid forests of Costa Rica, we’ve still got plenty of places for you to enjoy! The Central American nation is also home to a number of ancient settlements and massive volcanic mountains, including the mysterious Guayabo National Monument in Cartago Province. This stunning archeological locale, located just two hours East of San José, can be found on the slopes of a nearby volcano, which provides a stunning backdrop for the centuries-old abandoned village.

The monument itself includes a number of hiking trails and ruins of a settlement which can be dated back to 1000 B.C.E., which was abandoned over 6 centuries ago. The cultural site is great for taking in the views, studying pre-Columbian architecture, and exploring the abandoned bridges and tombs of those who once inhabited the space. Those looking to cool off after their big hike can take a brief detour through the Aquiares Waterfall on their way back to the city, to truly garner some insight into the multifaceted nature of Costa Rica’s charm.

Rincón de la Vieja

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rincon de la Vieja Volcano (@rincondelaviejapark)

If you simply can’t get enough of Costa Rica’s incredible volcanoes, you can’t leave the country until you’ve experienced all that Rincón de la Vieja has to offer. Located within the Alajuela Province, just a few hours East of the Guanacaste Coast, this travel destination will truly knock your socks off, with stunning waterfalls, burbling mud springs, and volcanic vents spouting molten lava. Those feeling particularly adventurous can take a dip in the thermal hot springs , while others can tour the scenery in search of local wildlife such as the white-faced monkeys.

Depending on what tour package you book, you may have access to tour underwater caves, zipline across the rocks, or take your family whitewater rafting through the basins of the volcanic base. There’s a little something for everyone in this corner of the world, making it a must-visit for those in the area. Rincón de la Vieja may be a far cry from the rainforests and marshes typically associated with the Costa Rican countryside, though it’s one of the unique and exciting areas in the entire country.

Arenal Region

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Emilie Reid (@emilie.reid.photographie)

Last, but certainly not least on our list, we have the stunning scenes of the Arenal Region. If you’ve been poking around social media sites and looking at different Costa Rica trip packages, most of the vibrant photographs you’ve been seeing have likely come from this exciting biodiverse locale. Like Costa Rica as a whole, the Arenal area contains a multitude of different biomes, including volcanoes, massive lakes, lush rainforests, and rolling rivers complete with a few steep waterfalls.

Go for a hike on the picturesque Arenal Volcano, and follow the river down from the imposing pyramid to the fresh water of Arenal Lake. From there, you can relax your muscles in the nearby hot springs, or take a kayak down the river, watching for pumas and howler monkeys prowling the river banks. If you’re only going to be in the country for a few days, this is the number one must see part, simply because it blends so much of what makes Costa Rica special into a compact area.

Trekking through a cloud forest is one of the best things to do in Monteverde, if not the number one reason to visit. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has been around since the 70s and protects more than 35,000 acres and TONS of unique wildlife that call the area home.

Thanks to its high altitude, the forest sits amongst low-hanging clouds, promoting a misty and otherworldly atmosphere. You’ll encounter hanging bridges, waterfalls, and some seriously incredible flora and fauna as you hike.

There are a few different ways to explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest. You can do a self-guided tour of the area for $25, but I’d recommend splurging on a guided tour to better your chances of sighting wildlife and learning a little bit about everything you see.

For an even more unique way of exploring the forest, you can take a night tour of the reserve! You’ll see nocturnal creatures you missed out on during the day on an informative night walk .

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is definitely the most popular cloud forest in the area, but it’s not the only one! La Reserva Bosque Nuboso sits in the nearby town of Santa Elena, offering a less touristy experience amongst the clouds.

Toucan in Santa Elena Cloud Forest Monteverde

It’s quieter, cheaper ($18), and every bit as divine as the Monteverde Cloud Forest. You can explore this area solo(a) or do a guided tour to get the most out of your experience. La Reserva Bosque Nuboso’s first tour starts at 4:30 in the morning and comes with a warm cup of coffee and incredible sunrise views over the forest.

Okay, you get the picture that Costa Rica is full of lush rainforests. But exploring these verdant areas is one of the best things to do in Monteverde.

At a whopping 57,000 acres, the Children’s Eternal Rainforest is the country’s largest private reserve. There are miles of hiking trails through the forest, and the wildlife watching (specifically the bird watching) is hard to beat.

Hiking through Children's Eternal Rainforest is a less popular thing to do in Monteverde

Because the forest is so large, the trails are separated into sections, and you’ll need to pay an entrance fee for each one. So do your research and plan your hikes before your visit!

Like many other rainforests in the area, you can explore alone or take a guided tour (day or night). There are also options for overnight lodging and meal plans. Staying overnight in a rainforest? Sign me up!

There’s a small visitor center right in town to get more info on this one.

I know some of you are wondering if there are things to do in Monteverde that don’t involve lots of hiking, and the answer is YES.

Sky Adventures in Monteverde

Turn the adrenaline up a notch and experience Monteverde Cloud Forest at a more adventurous pace with this sky walk, sky tram, and sky trek ziplining tour . This is a fun way to explore the forest and offers a unique vantage point that you won’t get from hiking trails alone.

Adventure and epic views – it’s a win-win in my book!

Costa Rica is a massive producer of coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane. Three of my favorite things!

Indulging in these tasty treats is a great way to experience the country’s culture, but you can take it further and learn all about the process on this sweet plantation tour . You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into growing the crops, how the product is produced, and of course, how it tastes.

Doing a chocolate making tour is a fun thing to do in Monteverde Costa Rica

The tour is just a couple of hours, so this is the perfect activity for those who don’t have a lot of time and want to squeeze more into their day.

The actual town of Monteverde is pretty pint-sized, and many overlook it for the (slightly) more developed Santa Elena. But wait! There’s a hidden gem tucked away off Monteverde’s main road, and it’s worth discovering.

Catarata Los Murciélagaos (or Monteverde Waterfall) sits at the end of a short (but steep) trail, and this peaceful area has yet to be overcrowded by tourists visiting the area. After the trek, you can take a dip in the pool below the waterfall – just know the water is F***in cold!

Hiking at Catarata los Murcielagos falls in Monteverde

Note that the waterfall is located on private land, and you’ll need to pay an entrance fee ($6 USD) to access the trail.

You’ll head down steps and tree roots the whole way, then cross a small bridge before reaching the falls. The falls have some rocks to lay on and enjoy and of course, taking a dip will be worth the chills down your spine.

Don’t forget you’ll have to climb all the way back up so leave yourself enough time to take the steep trail back up, as going up will take longer.

Hiking to El Tigre Waterfalls is one of the best things to do in Monteverde. Period. I LOVED this hike.

It’s one part adventure and one part relaxation, with about a 2.3-mile hike and ten waterfalls, some of which you can swim in. As you hike, you’ll cross hanging bridges, plus an incredible view where you can see several volcanoes on a clear day.

Hiking El Tigre falls was my fav thing to do in Monteverde!

The trail is rated as moderate, so wear good walking shoes and pack snacks to sustain yourself. The trail is a bit muddy at points, with rocks and roots making “nature’s staircase,” so this is NOT the trail to wear sandals.

Hiking path on El Tigre hike in Monteverde

I will be the first to admit that a $30 entrance fee is outrageous, hi, and welcome to Costa Rica! Where nature is expensive! But all in all, I did love this hike. They keep this trail maintained very well and those hanging bridges can’t be cheap to upkeep.

There are safety checkpoints that make solo travelers like me feel a bit better as well. The start of the hike will be the best, as the best waterfalls are seen within the first mile. There are also zipline and horseback riding options here as well.

El Tigre Falls Monteverde

TIP: You don’t need a guide for this hike at all. You can also add on $10 and they will provide a shuttle service that picks you up and drops you off at your hotel, as this hike is 30 minutes outside of Monteverde.

Glide along Latin America’s longest zipline on this adrenaline-inducing adventure park tour . You can soar along ten different zip lines, cross a rope bridge, practice your rappelling, and play Tarzan through the rainforest—all in one epic tour!

Ziplining in Monteverde in the cloud forest. Definitely one of the best things to do in Monteverde!

The tour includes all the gear and instructions, so all you need to worry about is showing up and having fun. If you’re looking for adventurous things to do in Monteverde, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better spot than this park!

Ziplining in Monteverde superman style. Definitely one of the best things to do in Monteverde!

When I did this, the famous Monteverde cloud forest was flowing in and out so sometimes I was zipping through gorgeous trees, and on other lines, I was flying through a white abyss! The clouds literally made me feel like I was in the sky, and I couldn’t see the start or the finish of my zipline. And doing it “superman style” was truly wild!

Costa Rica is full of unique wildlife. This rainforest-filled land is an animal lover’s dream, from two-toed sloths and coatis to rare birds and armadillos. The Curi-Cancha Reserve is an excellent spot for viewing all these special critters, and the lush forest scenery certainly won’t disappoint.

Green Crowned Brilliant Hummingbird on Purple Flower Curi Cancha Reserve

This is one of those experiences I recommend doing with a guide, and I’ll tell you why. A local guide can help point out things you might otherwise walk right past without noticing. They’ll also be able to give you info about everything you see, plus share some knowledge about the reserve’s sustainability practices. The air-conditioned van and hotel pick-up doesn’t hurt, either!

Also known as the Moteposario, the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens is a sanctuary for 30 different species of these colorful winged creatures. There are also dozens of species of other insects and arachnids, all living across the facility’s four unique gardens.

A Glasswinged butterfly feeds in a Costa Rican garden.

Your entrance fee ($18 USD) includes a tour of each garden and an up-close look at some of the many creatures that call this beautiful place home.

The Monteposario is located between Monteverde and Santa Elena, making it a great activity for those who don’t want to venture too far off the beaten path.

For those who DO love a good off-the-beaten-path moment, check out Ficus La Raiz. A true natural wonder sits in the hills around Monteverde and Santa Elena. Ficus La Raiz (also known as el Puente Raiz or the Root Bridge) is a woody “bridge” made up of tangled ficus roots.

The “bridge” crosses a small stream in a quiet nature area and is accessible via a short walking trail. The trail is pretty scenic and also short and easy to reach.

Ficus la raiz is a bit of a underrated things to do in Monteverde! It's super peaceful by this tree.

Head here , and you’ll turn off the main road to what looks like someone’s driveway! Very quickly, you’ll see on the left-hand side a sign labeled RAIZ and then the trail from there is obvious.

People have complained that there’s sometimes a man trying to get you to pay to visit this spot but this spot is free! I luckily didn’t encounter this person.

One of the best free things to do in Monteverde is to find a good viewpoint and watch the sunset. The area surrounding Monteverde and Santa Elena has plenty of scenic lookouts on offer, so you can pick a new spot whenever (if ever) you crave a change of scenery.

This viewpoint is one of the most popular viewpoints in the area with a few benches strewn on the sidewalk for people to enjoy. It’s easy to find thanks to its central location, and the views are fantastic. Try to walk or get a ride to this one if you can, as there aren’t a lot of places to park at the viewpoint itself.

A horse at sunset from a viewpoint in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

It’s usually pretty full at sunset, and if you’re lucky enough, you might even catch some majestic horses frolicking in the field below.

Just walking down a bit further south from this viewpoint is another one that’s less busy. There’s a small platform and a bench to sit and enjoy.

There are some great places to eat in Montverde. Here are some of my favorites…

Casado from a soda in Monteverde

  • Soda La Amistad – Typical Costa Rican fare with fair prices. I came in HUNGRY, and the casado was exactly what I needed.
  • Cafe Capuchino – Come in for a legitimately good coffee, breakfast, and a nice view over the forest.
  • Open Kitchen – One of the pricier spots in town but has good Western-style foods. It’s beautifully decorated and even has a beer garden downstairs.
  • La Carreta – One of the favorite local spots in town for quick-budget eats. It was a bit salty for me but still pretty good.
  • Panadería El Hornito de Pilo – This was my little bakery where I went to grab some quick pastries to have in the morning before an early tour or before heading out on an early shuttle. This is also a super budget-friendly brekkie idea, so you can spend more money on adventures.

If you’re traveling from San Jose, the capital city, you can take a shared shuttle, which is a cost-effective and convenient option. The shuttle ride takes about 3-4 hours and includes hotel pick-up and drop-off as well as airport pick-up and drop-off. You can find a shuttle here.

TIP: If you’re coming from La Fortuna or going to La Fortuna after Monteverde , the shuttle-boat-shuttle option is the best (and prettiest) way to get between these spots!

Arenal Lake and volcano views from the boat.

Alternatively, you can rent a car and drive yourself to Monteverde, which offers more flexibility and the opportunity to explore other destinations along the way. But do note that the road here isn’t great. It’s windy and has a lot of potholes on the last 18 miles to town, which takes around an hour just for that section.

For those who prefer public transportation, you can take a bus from San Jose, and the journey takes about 5-6 hours. While this is a budget-friendly option, it’s the least comfortable and slowest.

If you’re coming from other parts of Costa Rica, such as the Pacific coast, you can take a direct shuttle or bus to Monteverde. Sometimes there’s a stop in Liberia, depending on where you’re coming from.

TRANSPORTATION TIP

If you’re looking for bus or boat tickets around Central America and Mexico, you can easily book them online! Check Availability

Monteverde is a very walkable town. You’ll have no issues getting from A to B if they are in and around town, but do note it is hilly here. There will be lots of up and down getting to some of these spots. I got quite the workout!

Hills of Monterverde Costa Rica

To get to a lot of the activities I mentioned above, like El Tigre Waterfall, you can request hotel pick up and drop off for an extra charge. You can also have your accommodation call you a taxi, there are only a few in town really.

There’s also a public bus that operates a few times a day that is cheap but really just goes from town to the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

Centro Commercial in Monteverde

One of the best ways to get around is by simply doing a tour which I’ve linked above for you. Sometimes after paying the entrance fees, a taxi to and from, and the time it takes to figure things out—it may have been more worth it just to do the darn tour!

It’s also the best way to see the animals, so if that’s your goal, a guide is NEEDED! Most of the animals are very elusive or are far away, and you’ll need a telescope or binoculars (which the guides have for you) to even see them.

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing – Monteverde’s weather is generally cool and wet, so pack clothing that is comfortable, easy to layer, and can withstand some rain.
  • Waterproof gear – A rain jacket, water-resistant shoes or boots, and a waterproof backpack cover to keep your belongings dry. Just note that rain comes and goes, but even when it’s not raining, it’s common for you to be in a heavily misty environment. You’re literally in the clouds!
  • Binoculars – Monteverde is known for its abundant wildlife, so it’s helpful to have binoculars to spot birds, monkeys, sloths, and other creatures; otherwise, you’ll have to share one with the group (if you do a tour). I didn’t bring any, BUT I had a 70-200 lens on my camera, which also works! If you have neither and you aren’t planning on doing tours where you could at least share a telescope or binoculars, you’ll struggle to see animals in Costa Rica.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses – Even though the weather is generally cooler and you’re in the clouds, the sun can still be strong at higher elevations.
  • Comfortable walking shoes – You’ll be doing a lot of walking and hiking, so don’t just rock up here with sandals. You NEED sneakers for hiking around. Also, remember that the town is hilly.

Where to Stay in Monteverde

Random tip, but choosing where to stay in Monteverde is a bit weird because you actually want to stay more in Santa Elena. This is where essentially everything is, as you’ll notice if you look at Google Maps. So now that we got that out of the way…

A serene and eco-friendly hotel nestled in the lush hills of Monteverde. It offers cozy accommodations with stunning forest views, as well as a restaurant, bar, and outdoor pool.

A comfortable and welcoming hotel that’s a great budget option. It offers a range of accommodations with simple decor, a shared kitchen and a small outdoor area to enjoy too. This is actually where I stayed and the owner was SO nice and helped me so much. It’s a great spot and super affordable.

A budget-friendly hostel situated in the heart of Monteverde. It offers basic accommodations with shared bathrooms, as well as a communal kitchen, lounge, and garden. The hostel is conveniently located near restaurants, shops, and other amenities.

September 5, 2024 By Sammi Leave a Comment

October in Costa Rica tends to get a bad rep and it’s understandable why – it’s typically the rainiest month for most of the country. However, not all of the country is under water in October! If you can only visit Costa Rica in October, you should hop over to the Caribbean coast as it enjoys the most sunshine and least rainfall during that month.

To be completely honest, it’s not the best month to visit Costa Rica (unless you’re going to the Caribbean side) if you want to avoid rain and experience Costa Rica to the absolute fullest, but there are still upsides to visiting in October.

We will discuss all about what Costa Rica in October is like in this post.

If you’re looking to save some $$ on your trip, check out our Mytanfeet deals page! We partnered with a rental car company, hotels and tour operators to give discounts exclusively for our readers. Click here to enter our deals page.

Costa Rica in October Weather

In Costa Rica, there is a tropical dry season and rainy season along with over 25 micro-climates. October dominates as the rainiest month for many of those micro-climates. As mentioned earlier, the exception is the Caribbean coast, where October is actually a sunny month with less rainfall. If you can ONLY visit Costa Rica in October, we highly recommend to visit the Caribbean coast!

It is not super rare for October to have tropical storms, tropical waves and tropical depression. Costa Rica luckily does not experience many hurricanes but it is still a rare possibility in October and November.

The last hurricane was Hurricane Nate in early October 2017, which was one of the absolute worst hurricanes to hit Costa Rica. And even if the hurricane does not make direct landfall in Costa Rica, the country is still subject to heavy rainfall.

If you are super unlucky, you may just happen to come to Costa Rica during a tropical storm or depression in October. But, it may only last a day or two so it’s not a 24/7 rainy day all 31 days in October. You can still enjoy moments of sunshine and clear skies in October, but don’t count on it every single day.

Always expect rain, and be happy when it doesn’t! You could wake up to pouring rain, then it’ll clear up for a couple hours, and then begin pouring again in the evening. It could be super sunny, blue skies in the morning until about mid morning, then start storming until the next day. It could even drizzle the entire day with lightning storms at night.

Temperatures

Temperatures are the lowest in October, but it’s still hot. Average temperatures are around mid 80s° F for the coasts (29° C). It’s around low 70s° F (21° C) for the Central Valley cities. The highest elevation areas like Poas, Vara Blanca, San Gerardo de Dota and San Isidro de el General can go down to low 50s° F (10° C) at night, these are generally the coldest temperatures.

Below are short descriptions of the weather in August for popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica.

Guanacaste and Nicoya Peninsula

The Guanacaste coast and Nicoya Peninsula experience October as their rainiest month. These areas tend to be hit with the extremes – driest in dry season, wettest in rainy season. Well, it’s not the wettest place in Costa Rica, but these areas do get a lot of rain and are subject to strong tropical waves and storms. When it rains, it pours, even if it only lasts for 30 minutes.

The upside to visiting these places in October is that you will see them at their lushest and greenest. Come again in three months and they will look completely different, like a desert!

Average day time temperatures are approximately high 80s° F (32° C) and night temperatures hover around mid 70s° F (24° C). Also very humid which can make it feel a tad bit hotter.

On the occasion that there is a tropical storm with consecutive days of rain, it may be very foggy and even a bit “chilly” in the early mornings like low 70s° F or 21° C, which is “cold” for these places! In March, the hottest month, it gets up to 40° C (104° F) by 10 AM!

Costa Rica in October - Playa Flamingo. Photo is of a beach with stormy clouds, darkish beige sand and some houses on a peninsula in the background

Also try to get out in the mornings for the least possibilities of rain. You may still be able to get some epic rainy season sunsets too, especially if it starts raining earlier in the day, there’s a high chance it could let up for a lovely sunset.

Central Valley

The Central Valley cities: San Jose , Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago experience quite a drenched October. The GAM can even flood, but mostly due to poor infrastructure so when it’s storming, the rains will pool over into the streets. You will still get moments throughout the day where it’s dry but it’s better to expect it to rain in the afternoons and nights so you’re prepared.

Mornings can still be clear and sunny in the city, but if you go up to the higher elevation areas, don’t be surprised if it’s fairly foggy with light drizzles even in the morning.

Costa Rica in October - Poas Volcano National Park. Photo is of a road going into the forest, very foggy

As the Central Valley is higher in elevation (~1100 meters or 3600 feet), it can actually get much colder, like mid 50s° F (12° C) at night. During the day, it stays around low to mid 70s° F (21-23° C).

La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano can rain a lot in October. It can rain on and off through the day, it can rain all night, it can rain all morning. Whatever day you are in La Fortuna in October, just be prepared for rain to avoid setbacks.

Book your activities for mornings and early afternoons. Just expect it to storm in the late afternoons, evenings and nights so avoid activities like night walks. You can still have sunny mornings, though they may be short lived so set your alarm clock and wake up early!

ARenal Volcano in October. Photo is of a volcano covered on the top with clouds, in the foreground is a green rainforest

But don’t worry about the temperatures, it’ll still be hot and humid in La Fortuna. Average day time temperatures hover in the mid 80s° F (29° C) with average night time temperatures in mid 70s° F (24° C).

Jaco and Manuel Antonio (Central Pacific)

Jaco and Manuel Antonio enjoy a nice wet October as well, being the tropical rainforests of the Central Pacific. You can still get lucky and have sunny and dry moments throughout the day, it won’t rain every single day, despite the dark clouds rolling in in the afternoon. Beautiful sunsets are still a possibility, if it clears up at the right time.

You’ll still have relatively high temperatures, around mid 80s° F (29° C) and night time temperatures are around mid 70s° F (24° C). It’s very humid in these areas, so prepare to sweat a lot. Midday may feel a lot hotter than the thermometer says, due to the humidity.

Costa Ballena and Osa Peninsula

Dominical , Uvita and Ojochal and the Osa Peninsula experience some of the wettest Octobers. The Osa Peninsula tends to get the most rainfall, more than the South Pacific. Storms, downpours, lightning storms, thunder and showers are not rare there.

Caribbean Coast (Tortuguero, Limon and Puerto Viejo)

Of all the places to visit in Costa RIca during October, the Caribbean coast is your best shot at great weather. Puerto VIejo , Limon and Tortuguero all boast days of sunshine, with little rainfall throughout the entire month. Although more tourists are realizing that the Caribbean is where they should go in October, it’s still not as crowded as the high season months like December through April.

Average day time temperatures are in the high 80s° F (30-31° C) and average night time temperatures are around the low 70s° F (23° C).

Monteverde ‘s mountain and cloud forest weather looks a bit like the Central Valley weather but it gets much foggier up there at 1300+ meters (4360+ feet). The periods of dryness and sun may be shorter and more intermittent in Monteverde, it’s best to just prepare for fog. storms and rain.

The tropical cloud forests constantly have low level cloud cover, hence the name and why you should just expect rain in Monteverde. It may actually rain here every day in October, whether it’s a light drizzle, afternoon shower or all day downpour.

Average day time temperatures are around 70° F (21° C) during the day and around low to mid 60s° F (15-18° C) at night.

Prices in Costa Rica in October

October is the cheapest time to visit Costa Rica. If you’re on an extremely tight budget, then October will be the best time for you to come. Due to it being the lowest tourism month and the rainiest for most of the country, many prices in tourism drop drastically.

Hotels can be 40-50% of the price they are in January, February and March, excursions may offer 10% or more discounts, especially for groups and restaurants may offer 20% off when paying in cash.

You can also find really good last minute deals for hotels and surf camps. We’ve even seen buy one, get one free for surf camps. Or book 2 nights and get the third free for hotels.

Car rentals are at their lowest in October. A one week subcompact crossover 4wd automatic SUV is around $330 USD with basic and mandatory insurance. In high season like February, the same car for one week is around $750 USD!

Flights are also cheaper, as October is not a popular travel month in general. But again, the downside is availability as many routes aren’t serviced in October. Although flights may be cheaper, the itinerary may be more complicated if your origin airport is not major hub with a direct flight like LAX, ATL, DFW or IAH.

Crowds in Costa Rica in October

October, being the rainiest month for most of the country, will be at its emptiest although the Caribbean coast may see more people. You can perfectly find yourself sharing one of the most popular beaches in Costa Rica (Playa Manuel Antonio in Manuel Antonio National Park ) with a handful of people.

Photo is of a beach, with a rainforest covered inlet in the background, turquoise water. A couple is taking a selfie on the beach, another couple is swimming in the water

The Caribbean coast may be a bit busier since it has better weather but it’s not still nearly as crowded as the high season!

Trip Planning for Costa Rica in October

The best thing about visiting Costa Rica in October is that you won’t have to worry about hotels, national parks or attractions being sold out. If you want to “go with the flow” and not pre-book anything, you can definitely do that in October but just make sure to check if the place is open first.

The downside is availability, especially if you are a solo traveler. Although services will be cheaper, not all services will be available for one person as there is normally a minimum to operate a service.

Important Things to Know About Visiting Costa Rica in October

If you are driving, rent a 4×4 . Roads that only need a high clearance car in dry season, will be in their worst shape in October with more and bigger potholes. If it’s a dirt road and it has been raining a lot, it’ll become a muddy mess. Always stay on the main road – never take an off road detour.

Furthermore, DO NOT CROSS RIVERS. Rivers are at their peak in October and flash floods CAN and DO happen. Don’t try to be a big shot and show off. Be safe, be smart. Even if you have a 4×4, it is never worth the risk. Any type of water damage to your rental vehicle will never be covered by any type of insurance, even full insurance. Read more about renting a car in Costa Rica and get our Costa Rica car rental discount.

For long routes, plan for the morning. Do not drive long routes at night or overnight. This is when it tends to rain the hardest.

Some businesses (hotels, restaurants, shops) are not open in October. Many hotels take advantage of the lowest month to do construction.

Plan your activities for the morning and be aware that cancellations may occur.

Apply mosquito repellent profusely and cover up. Mosquitoes are at their peak in October, as they breed in stagnant water. Thanks to the poor infrastructure, streets get incredibly flooded so mosquitoes are at their worst.

Flight cancellations and delays are not uncommon in October. Download your airline’s app and check for updates regularly. I highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for October.

Have a good attitude and be flexible. If you can’t have a good attitude about rain, reschedule your trip. We get SO many emails from readers being disappointed about getting rained out for tours, not being able to see sunsets and having to drive in the rain…in October. They clearly didn’t do any research or didn’t take it seriously. If they did, they should have reschedule their trip to a less rainy month, to the dry season or went to the Caribbean side.

If this will be your first time in Costa Rica, it’s been your dream vacation for a long time and you will only visit Costa Rica once ever in your life, then reschedule your visit to the dry season. Or go to the Caribbean side!

Best Things to Do in Costa Rica in October

Remember, plan your outdoor activities for the morning.

There aren’t a ton of museums in Costa Rica, they are mostly in San Jose. So if you’re in the city during a storm or a heavy rainfall, head to a museum or two. These museums are not huge, so you can visit a couple places in one day.

The Jade Museum and Museum of Gold are very interesting to learn about the culture, history and traditions of Costa Rica. The National Theater is the country’s cultural gem and the National Museum displays rotating exhibits for Costa Rican artists and important moments in history.

The Central Market is also an excellent place to find cover and taste some yummy local dishes.

Cooking Class

Most cooking classes are under roof so you can still whip up some tasty Costa Rican food . We did a farm to table cooking class in La Fortuna . The first 30 minutes was touring the local farm and picking the ingredients to use for our cooking. Then the next couple hours were under roof, cooking up our own culinary storm while the real storm was going on outside.

Hot Springs

Hot springs in the rain is awesome. Just make sure to get out fast if there is a lot of close lightning. I love hot springs, Yeison doesn’t but in October when it’s pouring rain, he will hop right in there!

Read about the best La Fortuna hot springs in our link. Other hot spring facilities are in Guanacaste like Las Hornillas, Buena Vista, Borinquen, Rio Perdido, Vandara (one of our favorites) , Hacienda Guachipelin and over in the Central Valley at Hacienda Orosi.

Morning Beach Walks

Since it tends to start raining in the afternoons, get your beach time early in the mornings when it has the best chances to be dry and sunny. The sun is up by 530 AM, so set your alarm clock and get your steps in.

Caribbean Activities

If you’re going to visit Tortuguero , then the must do activities are a boat ride or kayaking through the national park canals and a turtle nesting tour. You also have great chances to see baby turtles hatching and crawling out to see in the early mornings and evenings.

In Puerto Viejo , you can visit a bunch of gorgeous beaches, ride your bike throughout town, hike Cahuita National Park , visit Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge to see animals, kayak down the Punta Uva River, take a chocolate or banana tour, take a surf lesson at Playa Cocles or simply relax.

October 12 is the Dia de las Culturas (Cultural Day).

Does Costa Rica celebrate Halloween? No, not really. But it’s been catching on the last few years. You can find more Halloween activities where there are a lot of American expats and immigrants, like Tamarindo, Samara , Playas del Coco , Manuel Antonio and Jaco . In San Jose, some bars and clubs put on Halloween parties and raves.

Tours We Don’t Recommend in October

Many tour operators will not run certain tours in October. These are excursions like sunset snorkeling, sunset sailing, catamaran tours, night walks, afternoon volcano hikes and afternoon horseback riding. If you book excursions in the afternoon, be aware that the weather may force cancellations.

Some other activities are waterfall hikes, such as La Leona waterfall hike as that area can get a lot of rain. If it’s storming, they won’t open it due to safety. Some waterfalls that have better infrastructure will stay open, but they may be a very murky, dirty brown due to all the run off. Swimming in the waterfall is a no no. One of these waterfalls is La Fortuna waterfall , pictured below.

costa rica in october la fortuna waterfall. Photo is of some rocks in the foreground, and a waterfall with a brown colored pool

Essentials: Valid original passport, valid original drivers license if you plan to rent a car , credit card with no foreign transaction fee, travel insurance and medicines.

An absolute MUST bring: a waterproof shell or jacket.

Your rainy season packing list will be: waterproof backpack or rain cover, hat or visor, light weight poncho, dry bags, micro fiber towel, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, after bite cream. Don’t leave your hotel room without your rain jacket or travel umbrella in your bag!

As for clothes, for the rainforest and coast, light weight clothes that dry fast. These will be a life saver due to the high humidity. If you’re visiting high elevation mountain areas, bring a warm sweater, jacket and long pants.

We highly recommend a pair of waterproof trail running shoes due to muddier trails. For light water activities like snorkeling, tubing, white water rafting, waterfall rappelling, closed toed adventure sandals like KEEN are great.

From sloths to scarlet macaws. A journey through Costa Rica's wildlife marvels

Go Collette - Costa Rica Tourism (TWN)

Wildlife is a significant part of the Costa Rica experience. It's a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and home to many animal species—from monkeys to sea turtles, anteaters to jungle cats, and a myriad of rare birds and exotic butterflies. Many of these species are exclusive to this region, making a wildlife-watching adventure here genuinely one-of-a-kind.

But, with so much wildlife, their survival instincts are finely tuned to avoid humans. Going out alone, you might wonder if they're also on vacation. That is why if you want to experience the full scope of everything living in Costa Rica, you need an expert local guide who understands the terrain, knows an animal's behaviour, habits, habitat, and where to find them during the day. That is why companies like Collette have wildlife excursions built into their customizable travel packages, where they find the best guides to accompany small groups on your trip. The thrill of spotting these creatures in their natural habitat is an exceptional experience. Here's a glimpse of what you might encounter in the wild.

Four monkey species call Costa Rica home, outnumbering humans in the region. The Howler Monkey's distinctive call serves as an alarm to alert troops of nearby predators. They wake up early, and their powerful wail could put a Costa Rican rooster out of business. The intelligent White-Faced Capuchin monkeys travel in troops and have become Hollywood favourites. With their agile movements and striking fur, the small Squirrel Monkeys live on the Pacific Coast, while the rare Spider Monkeys display their strength and elegance in remote rainforest areas with a tail that acts like a third arm.

Costa Rica's birds can turn a casual observer into a passionate birder. There are over 900 bird species, each with a dizzying array of colourful plumage. It's the land of toucans, with six species, including the iconic keel-billed toucan (picture Toucan Sam on a Froot Loops cereal box). The iconic sizeable rainbow-coloured bill can do more than turn heads. It can do everything from regulating body temperature to attracting mates and crushing fruit.

Seventeen species of parrots call Costa Rica home. The scarlet macaw is the most famous and largest parrot on the planet, with its colourful and vibrant red, blue, and yellow feathers. Legendary for imitating human voices, the social scarlet macaw uses its loud call to announce its territory, which it shares with a colony of hundreds of its kind.

Of the ten trogon species in Costa Rica, the resplendent quetzal is the crown jewel for many birders. The photogenic male is dressed in glittering emerald-green plumage, and his tail cascades up to 75 centimetres to attract mates.

Getty Images: Sloth

Sloths blend into the canopy treetop, so to spot one, you may need the help of a guide. Their green-tinted fur is home to moths, fungi, and algae species that act as camouflage and are said to make them unpalatable to predators. Sloths are mistaken for being lazy, taking up to four hours to travel a mile across the treetops. But this is evolution at work. They put teenagers to shame by sleeping up to 18 hours a day to conserve energy. And out of every mammal, their digestive system is the slowest, taking up to two weeks to digest a leafy-green meal.

Butterflies

Getty Images: Butterfly

Every continent except for Antarctica has butterflies, but in Costa Rica, 20% of the globe's butterfly population calls the country home. And an astounding number of its species cover every shade of the spectrum. One has been singled out as Costa Rica's national symbol: the Blue Morpho butterfly. They flutter in sunny spots, where their diamond-shaped scales reflect light, creating a vivid neon blue hue with a wing span that can grow to 15 centimetres.

But larger than the Blue Morpho is the owl butterfly, which has a 20-centimetre wingspan. Its underside has spots that look like an owl's eyes, which is said to scare off predators. The Giant Swallowtail is stunning, with feather-patterned wings with teardrop shapes on the end, and the Glass-Wing butterfly's wings resemble stained-glass windows with see-through sections.

Sea Turtles

Getty Images: Sea turtle

Sea turtles know Costa Rica is paradise and vacation on its beaches yearly to lay their eggs. The beaches are home to four species, including the eight-foot-long leatherback sea turtle that tips the scale at over 1,200 pounds. The olive ridley sea turtle is legendary for storming the beaches by the thousands to lay their eggs under the romantic glow of a full moon. The Tortuguero National Park on the Atlantic coast is the Western Hemisphere’s largest green sea turtle nesting site. Each mammoth species drags itself out of the ocean, and each turtle digs a nest for up to one hundred eggs. Several weeks later, the eggs hatch, and thousands of baby turtles race from predators in a lottery to the ocean. From June to October, green turtles nest along Costa Rican beaches with leatherbacks from March to July.
