In St. Catherine's Hellshire Hills is where you can find Two Sisters Cave. There is a sizable sinkhole with fresh water in each cave. In Negril, you will find a dive site aptly called the Throne Room, because of the throne shaped orange elephant ear sponges that  inhabit the inner part of  this reef formation.  Venture into this 25 foot long cavern and come face to face with a variety of sea creatures which may include barracuda, turtles, nurse sharks, snapper fish, sting rays, and schools of colourful tropical fish.

In Montego Bay, the Widowmaker’s Cave is an exciting dive site that will reward experienced divers with stunning views of soft corals, red polyps, sponges and numerous schools of fish. Bear in mind that you’ll need to go through a 10-foot chimney-like tunnel to exit this cavern.

These hidden gems offer a glimpse into the island's geological wonders and provide thrilling opportunities for caving enthusiasts. Explore Jamaica, where adventure and natural beauty await.

A Brief History of the Green Grotto Caves (Jamaica)

Named after the green algae covering the passageways’ walls and hidden pools, the Green Grotto caves are one of Jamaica’s most famous attractions. Other names for the Green Grotto caves include Runaway Bay Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, and many more. The entrance to these caves is not far from where Christopher Columbus first landed in Jamaica in 1494 and thus has great historical implications.

During the 17th century, when the English invaded, the Spanish fled to the confines of these caves to avoid capture. An underground tunnel linked the caves to the sand at Runaway Bay. According to legend, the Spanish fled the island to Cuba through the tunnel. Smugglers in the mid-20th century used these caves as a hideout when smuggling arms to Cuba. This place was a favorite of pirates because of its seclusion and ease of access to the sea.

Fun Fact – Pirates have an eye patch to immediately see in the caves’ darkness without waiting for their eyes to adjust.

You might also be interested in what role pirates had to play in Cartagena’s walled city .

Historically, the indigenous Taino people (Arawak Indians) used these underground rock formations for shelter and other uses. Fragments of pottery and artifacts are occasionally unearthed from these formations.

The caves themselves comprise an underground labyrinth 5,000 feet (1,525 meters) long and 39 feet (12 meters) deep. Composed of limestone, the rock chambers, light holes, and tunnels wind and intertwine their way deep within the earth and culminate at an underground lake of 118 feet (36 meters). Along the way, the rock formations of stalactites, stalagmites, and columns intrigue you and make you wonder how one would not get lost without a torch. Without light, there is no sense of direction, which is quite dangerous as the caves’ structure is quite sharp in places.

Would you dare to go in the dark?

How were the Unusual Green Grotto Caves created?

Like many islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica was underwater millions of years ago. As the earth’s shape changed and land masses rose and fell, mud and clay settled on its surface. Over time this changed to limestone, a softer rock material. During millions of years, aquatic rivers, currents, and rainwater cut and eroded this limestone.

At times, water infiltration through the surface created large chambers and corridors. As the island of Jamaica rose out of the water again, these chambers and passages became the tunnels and rooms we are discovering today. In deeper cavities, the remaining water forms the lakes or grottos inside the caves. Surprisingly, any life exists in these lakes, given that they are completely dark.

When stalagmites and stalactites grow together, they form a column. Some columns are small, while others can be quite large.

What to see on the way to the Green Grotto Caves?

If you have chosen the Green Grotto Caves Tour as part of a Falmouth cruise excursion, your tour guide will very proudly want to show you some of the highlights of Falmouth as you make your way to the caves. One of the most featured attractions is the Falmouth Parish Church. Built-in 1795, the Falmouth Parish Church (also known as St. Peter’s Anglican) is the oldest public building in the town. This church was constructed of brick and stone. After an extension in 1842, it became the largest Anglican church on the island.

Falmouth was the first town in Jamaica to have running water. Originally constructed in the early 19th century, Water Square is a focal point for the city. Here fresh water was pumped from the nearby Martha Brae River to a tank in the square and then pumped to the surrounding houses. Visiting ships could also receive fresh water as it was channeled to the docks from this tank. Today, a large fountain sits in the square as a reminder of its significance.

Are you a James Bond fan?

If you take the time to visit the Jamaica Swamp Safari Village , you may recognize some scenery from the James Bond Movie “Live & Let Die, filmed here in 1972. Of course, many plants have grown, and animals may have changed, but the staff will be thrilled to tell you about Jamaica’s natural history, not far from Falmouth, as you make your way to the Green Grotto caves.

A typical Falmouth cruise excursion is whitewater rafting or kayaking on the Rio Bueno River . On the way to the caves tour, you will pass over this river and see one of the oldest bridges in Jamaica. The river continues toward the sea, leading to one of the deepest harbors on the island. Today, this harbor provides an excellent shipping port for the bauxite mined in the local hills. The river is named after Christopher Columbus, as this was where he landed on his first trip to Jamaica.

What to expect on the Green Grotto Caves Tour?

Safety minute.

After your 45-minute tour from Falmouth through the countryside of Jamaica, you will arrive at the Green Grotto caves. Here your tour guide will be replaced by a different tour guide specifically for the caves. You will assemble in a small pavilion near the property entrance, where you will be given a short introduction to the cave property. Take note that the access is quite well hidden onto the surrounding hills. After your waivers are signed, you will be taken in groups to the cave entrance. If the group is large, your group be separated.

If you plan on doing this Falmouth Jamaica excursion, plan your proper cave attire. Proper attire, including closed-toe shoes and long pants, ensures that you are safe and comfortable and will get the most out of this experience. Floors, paths, tunnels, and walls can be slippery, so proper attire will be a good safety option. Rock outcrops and low ceilings are common as well.

Just outside the entrance to the cave, you will be handed a disposable head covering and a helmet. (And to answer a common question, yes, you still need a head covering even if you are bald.) These are to keep the multi-use helmets sanitary.

Be sure to adjust the helmet size to protect you from overhead dangers properly.

Green Grotto Caves – Cave 1

As you enter the cave through the gate, you will start to see the natural light disappear. Do not worry, as lights have been installed to help with visibility, and your guide also carries a flashlight. You will notice very quickly that any areas on steeper gradients have had anti-slip mats added for your protection to prevent falling in the cave.

A short walk from the entrance to the cave will have you enter a large open room. Rooms like this provide the greatest protection and shelter for people seeking refuge from the elements or those who may want to harm them. Tables have been provided to allow a rest stop if you so desire.

As you go further into the cave, the unique rock formations of this sprawling limestone cave are beyond comparison. Pockets in the ceiling, bats, ice cycle-shaped ceiling formations (stalactites), and rock formations from the cave floor (stalagmites) make this natural beauty worth seeing. It is no wonder that so many people have used these caves over the years.

Green Grotto Caves – Cave 2

In the cave’s depths, you will notice the uniquely green walls caused by the algae that grow there, thus giving the Green Grotto Caves its name. Deeper still, you will pass through the outer cave known as Cave 1, and you will begin to enter Cave 2. Cave two is more enclosed with steep, narrower tunnels and shallow ceilings. At one point, you will descend 67 steps to reach the destination, the grotto.

The grotto or lake is a pool of stagnant freshwater home to many organisms and small fish. It is crystal clear and thus makes it possible to see the underlying rock formations below the surface. The beauty of this unique environment is hard to behold.

Following a short visit to the grotto, you will make your way back up the steps to rejoin the outside world. Rest assured, there is another exit to these caves, so you do not have to backtrack through the entire system.

On a side note, if anyone requires medical attention during or after the ascension to the surface, Green Grotto Caves does have a trained first-aid attendant or nurse on standby.

Exiting the caves

Once you have returned to the surface, you will exit the caves through the gate, leave your head protector and helmet in their respective bins, and head back to the welcome center. Here you will be greeted with a light beverage. Other snacks are available at their snack bar, and souvenirs are in their shop. Be sure to stroll through the surrounding gardens, as they are quite beautiful for you to head back to Falmouth.

What Does a Tour Cost?

If you want to do the cave tour on an excursion from Falmouth, the trip costs around $93.50 USD. The tour is about 3 hours long, with half of it inside the caves.

If you are already in Jamaica you can book the tour directly with Green Grotto Caves . The price is $ 20 USD for adults.

Children are welcome on the tour but should be at least four years old.

Named for the green algae that covers its walls, the Green Grotto is a natural wonder. Located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay near Discovery Bay, the caves are filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

The caves are believed to be the dwellings of the first inhabitants of the island – Arawak Indians also known as the Tainos. The grounds also served as a hiding place for colonial-era Spaniards, runaway enslaved people and smugglers. In recent years, the caves were even a nightclub.

Today, visitors can explore the caves which can reach a depth of 40 feet to see numerous chambers, light holes and the Grotto Lake.  Past visitors say the engaging tour guides are what made the experience worthwhile.

The Grotto Caves are open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 4 to 12. Children younger than 4 are not allowed in the caves. There is a reduced rate for Jamaican residents with ID.

#1 Dunn's River Falls and Park (Ocho Rios)

If you're staying in Ocho Rios or just visiting Jamaica for the day from a cruise ship , travelers insist you allot a couple of hours to climb the Dunn's River Falls. You can take a guided climb of the waterfall, hike a trail alongside it or just recline and relax at the base of the falls.

Vacationers say that climbing along the rocks to the top of the falls isn't rigorous, but it can be slippery. Recent visitors said you can keep your footing by wearing water shoes. Given that you'll be splashed, then soaked by the cascading water on the ascent – and some say it's a bit dangerous – it's best if you leave your young kids (or any vacation buddies who aren't strong swimmers) at the foot of the falls. The attraction recommends allotting about 60 minutes to climb the falls.

cave tours in jamaica

A journey into underworld charm… a speologist’s dream, a green cavern of mystery and adventure, a slice of Jamaica’s history… part of your vacation with a difference… such are the accolades that can be ascribed to the largely unexplored labyrinth of mystical underground caverns called Green Grotto Caves which is surrounded by thick vegetation and supplied with pristine waters flowing from its secret depths. Such privacy and solace were to be found in the Green Grotto Caves, that its rich history can be a identified with diverse groups of people including its first inhabitants, the Arawak Indians (Tainos) who used the caves for various purposes. Proof of this is evident in the multiple fragments of pottery and artifacts that are unearthed from time to time.

During the 17th C when the English invaded the island of Jamaica, the Green Grotto Caves were used as a hideout for the Spaniards who were being driven out of the country.

In the mid 20th Century, between the two world wars, they were used by smugglers running arms to Cuba. In the latter years during the Second World War, the Government of Jamaica used the entrance of the cave as a storeroom for rum in barrels.

Known at various times as the Runaway Bay Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, Hopewell Caves, Rum Caves and Dairy Caves, Green Grotto is among Jamaica’s most prominent natural attractions.

Over time, the government of Jamaica has recognized the unlimited potential of this marquee of history and has placed in the ownership and operation of the Urban Development Corporation and the St Ann Development Company respectively

Since that time the Green Grotto Caves has been transformed into a world class attraction winning Green Globe 21 Certification since 2003 and in 2009 achieving platinum-status certification.

Situated on 25.9 hectares of the island’s beautiful North Coast, the Caves are located between the resort centres of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay and are precisely 3.2 km from Discovery Bay to the west and 4 km from Runaway Bay to the east.

The central feature of this natural attraction is the large labyrinthine limestone cave with its unique rock formations, its stalactites, stalagmites and abundance of overhead ceiling pockets, and bats.

Green Grotto is 1,525 metres long and 12 metres deep and is characterised by numerous chambers and light holes and a subterranean lake – the Grotto Lake – occupies its bowels.

What Are Jamaica's Green Grotto Caves?

Resting on the sensational North Coast of Jamaica, Green Grotto Caves are perfectly situated between the resort gems of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay  and are only a few kilometers from the popular Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay.

1,525 meters long and 12 meters deep, these naturally formed caves go deep under the earth, forming an enormous limestone labyrinth of chambers, light holes, unique rock formations, impressive stalactites and stalagmites, ceiling pockets, and a wealth of diverse creatures living within the network. Green Grotto is also home to a mesmeric underground lake - the Grotto Lake - that connects to the ocean, with water that's as transparent as glass.

When exploring the chambers, it's easy to get distracted by their beauty and awe, forgetting that an underbelly of rich history occupies every nook and cranny of this surreal subterranean attraction. In previous times, the caves served a myriad of purposes - from hiding pirate treasure and refuge for runaway slaves, to rum barrel storage, nightclub parties, and arms smugglers. Deep-rooted in centuries passed, they house rich and volatile history that's undoubtedly fascinating; and the best way to discover the marvels they hold is by taking a guided tour of the place, which is an enriching, unique experience for anyone visiting Jamaica.

The History Of The Green Grotto Caves

The Green Grotto caves played a large part in Jamaican history. The privacy and solace offered by the caves saw them deeply entrenched in the lives of diverse groups of people. First of all, they are thought to have been used as dwellings for Jamaica's very first inhabitants - the Arawak Indians known as the Tainos who arrived between 600 AD and 900 AD - who used the caves for various purposes, as evident in the fragments of pottery and artifacts found in the caves.

Centuries later, the caves were used as a hideout by pirates, who hid both themselves and their precious booty from authorities. During the 17th century when the English invaded Jamaica, the Spaniards - who were being driven out of the country - also hid in the caves and used them as a refuge. Even runaway slaves sought safety and solace in the caves' chambers, stowing themselves away from the English in the 18th century. Then, by the mid 20th century in between WWI and WWII, Green Grotto saw smugglers who employed them as a secluded base for their illegal arms deals with Cuba. Last but not least, the Jamaican government also found a use for the caves; towards the last half of the Second World War, officials stored barrels of rum in the entrance of the cave, which served as a storeroom for booze.

However, what makes Green Grotto all the more fascinating in recent history is its time as a nightclub. Indeed, there was once a booming nightclub established here by a wealthy American family in the 80s, who owned the land at the time. The family's father's dream was to own his very own nightclub, which he decided to turn into reality, setting up dance floors, bars, cement benches, fish ponds, and a whole range of features to rebirth the place a heart-thumping underground party hub. Unfortunately, though, caves aren't an ideal location for a nightclub; the vibrations of the loud music caused significant damage to the fragile cavern environment, destroying many of the stalactites and stalagmites, and even some of the main chamber.

Luckily, the Government of Jamaica regained control of Green Grotto Caves in 1999 after seeing its potential, making the decision to protect it as part of the country's important history and heritage. Since then, the caves have become one of Jamaica’s top attractions, winning Green Globe 21 Certification in 2003, and in 2009, achieving EarthCheck's platinum-status certification - the very first to do so in the Caribbean.

Take A Tour Of Green Grotto Caves

Whether to experience Jamaican history first-hand, discover incredible wildlife, or unleash one's inner Dora The Explorer , taking a guided tour of Green Grotto Caves is an essential part of any discerning traveler's itinerary. The tour takes around 45 minutes to one hour, and afterward, guests can tuck into a hearty Jamaican meal in the restaurant on-site, followed by some retail therapy in the gift shop. Tour guides also advise wearing appropriate, sturdy footwear for one's visit, as much of the ground is rocky and can be challenging without proper shoes.

During the tour, there are many points of interest and things to look out for. In particular, the wildlife is something to behold; visitors can spot colonies of nine different species of bat all hanging from the ceiling, and this even includes the amazing Giant Fruit Bat. The crystalline Grotto Lake inside the caves is also home to lots of small fish species and other marine creatures. The area referred to as the 'Wild Caves,' however, is usually off-limits to allow the natural ecology and wildlife to remain undisturbed, and to thrive in peace.

Of course, it goes without saying that the caves' stupendous stalactites and stalagmites catch the eye throughout the tour, but they're not the only majestic natural formations on the menu of marvels; the Drum Stone is another intriguing highlight, boasting a strange, thin layer of rock that solidified over a hollow space, allowing it to be beaten like a drum. Tour guides normally point this particular feature out to guests, and some even use it as an opportunity to show samples of historic Jamaican music. In addition, there are man-made installations to check out as well, including seating and other remnants of the cavernous nightclub that once hosted wild parties underground.

Most of the tour involves strolling through caves that are open and easy to navigate, however, there are some spots that require a little bit of courage - especially from people who're somewhat claustrophobic. The ”Limbo Hole' is one of these spots, and is an extraordinary point in the tour consisting of natural space in the limestone through which people climb in order to reach the next area. However, this section is only a mildly claustrophobic experience, and the caves are of course properly lit and large enough for visitors to pass through without worry.

Lastly, to really get an authentic sense of the caves and their history - specifically the time in which the Tainos people lived - the tour guide turns off the lights to showcase just how dark the caves are. It's only lights out for a few seconds, but it's a surreal experience that demonstrates what it must've been like for the early inhabitants who once called these wondrous caves home.

Roaring river cave tour.

Nestled in the hillsides of Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica, is the beautiful Roaring River Park. The history of the park dates back many centuries, however today it is managed by the Tourist Product Development Company and supported by the Association of Clubs in nearby Petersfield. About 2500 international and local tourists visit the park each year to explore the area’s culture and history, visit the famous limestone caves, and enjoy the beautiful river’s waters.

Roaring River Park was once the site of Roaring River Estate, a plantation owned by Colonel Peter Beckford in the late 17th century. Beckford emigrated to Jamaica in 1662 and became very active in island politics, representing St. Catherine Parish in the Assembly, serving as the first Custos of Kingston, and acting as the Lieutenant General of Jamaica all before his death in 1710. Much of his success stemmed from the profits generated by the Roaring River Estate, home to one of the largest sugarcane plantations in the colony. Conditions for sugarcane production were perfect in the Georges Plain, the area surrounding the estate, as the Roaring River provided natural irrigation for the fields. Peter Beckwith’s control of this fertile area and influence in the Parish of Westmoreland eventually led to the town of Petersfield being named after him.

Within Roaring River Park, the Roaring River Cave, now an attraction for visitors from all over, played an important role in the culture of the slaves on the plantation. During the 18th century, slaves would escape to the caverns at night, seeking the healing mineral waters that flow in the cave for their bodily injuries. Having now been explored by visitors from all over the world, the cavern has gained fame due to its unique history. It houses underground springs and pools and thousands of limestone formations. While the cave itself is only about 70 feet underground, the pools are believed to be over 120 feet deep.

As the economic dependency on slavery shifted with the changes in political power over the next three hundred years, Roaring River continued to be an important aspect of Jamaica’s economy and culture. Originally harnessed to irrigate the sugarcane fields, the River now provides water for all of Central Westmoreland including the Georges Plain and the Parish capital, Savanna-la-Mar.

On a typical day at Roaring River Park, you can find tourists and locals enjoying the River’s famous swimming hole, a sinkhole at the mouth of the river deemed “bottomless” by locals. Tour guides will be taking groups in the Roaring River Cave and local vendors will be selling goods along the River. Truly a cultural gem, understanding the importance of Roaring River Park is an key aspect of each volunteers’ visit to Petersfield.

The entrance to these caves is not far from where Christopher Columbus first landed in Jamaica in 1494 and thus has great historical implications.

green rock formations inside green grotto caves near falmouth, Jamaica

After an extension in 1842, it became the largest Anglican church on the island.

water square in falmouth, jamaica

Be sure to adjust the helmet size to protect you from overhead dangers properly.

entrance to green grotto caves

The beauty of this unique environment is hard to behold.

underground lake inside green grotto caves

The Mountain River Cave, located in Cudjoe Hill, St Catherine, is a treasure mine of Jamaican history. This fairly simple cave, located about 21 kilometres north west of Spanish Town, has far-reaching importance beyond its shallow depth. Stepping inside, you’ll be met by a bright tapestry of the past: a collection of Taino pictographs shown to the world in 1897.

These ancient murals, etched onto cave walls using a mixture of bat guano and ash, provide a glimpse into the lives of Jamaica’s original people. The depictions are a compelling blend of the familiar and intriguing. Look closely and you’ll notice a man holding a spear, a symbol of their hunting skill. An elegant turtle, possibly a revered creature in their mythology, graces another part. Female figures offer a human touch, alluding to the Taino community’s social hierarchy.

But, beyond the mere aesthetics lies a profound message, one that resonates across generations: ‘The paintings and artworks of our forefathers are footprints left for us to peer into their lives, and so, too, one day our children will peel into our lives. Live good and create a great legacy’.

UNVEILING HISTORY’S CANVAS

In these strokes of pigment and charcoal, we find not just a testament to artistic prowess, but a legacy of resilience, ingenuity, and cultural heritage. The Taino people, with their artistic expressions, beckon us to ponder our own contributions to the annals of history. What footprints will we leave for posterity? What stories will our descendants glean from the artefacts of our time?

As we stand on the precipice of tomorrow, let us heed the silent counsel of these ancient murals. Let us strive to live lives worthy of remembrance, to sow seeds of compassion, creativity, and progress. For, just as we glean insights from the past, so, too, shall our progeny look upon our deeds with reverence or regret.

Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox

While you travel down Mountain River Cave, keep in mind that you are following in the footsteps of pioneers, both explorers of land and imagination. Accept the legacy they have left behind and create a story worth following. For, in the end, it is not the stone monuments that endure, but the indelible traces we leave on the hearts and minds of those who follow in our footsteps.

9 of the best things to do in Jamaica

J amaica may best known by tourists for its beach resorts and white sand beaches, but this beautiful Caribbean island offers so much more for the intrepid traveller.

The island’s wealth of natural sights is perhaps its most remarkable feature, with the soft sands and azure waters of its beaches complemented by unique array of inland waterfalls like Dunn’s River Falls, the towering summit of Blue Mountain Peak and the rainforest-fringed waters of the Martha Brae River.

The towns and cities are mesmerising too. The capital, Kingston, acts as the beating heart of the country and its cultural centre, while seaside towns like Ocho Rios or the famed Montego Bay provide a dose of the laid-back Caribbean vibe that Jamaica is renowned for.

In between is a glut of outdoor adventures, cultural activities and Jamaican jewels to discover, from the wonders of Reggae to Jamaica’s culinary exports. Below, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Jamaica to help you make the most of your visit.

Take a tour of the capital

As the capital, Kingston is the ‘centre’ of Jamaica and the cultural heart of the country. It is a stark contrast to the relaxed resorts and tranquil coastline of much of the rest of Jamaica, but its lively energy has provided much of what has made modern Jamaica great, from arts and music to a diverse culinary scene.

Reggae fans will want to start by exploring the life of one of Jamaica’s sons at the Bob Marley Museum (where the artist lived from 1975), while anyone wanting to cover more of Jamaican art and culture should carry on to the National Gallery of Jamaica – showcasing everything from indigenous carvings to 18th-century British works – before finishing at the Devon House estate, home to gardens and a collection of antiques once belonging to George Stiebel, the country’s first Black millionaire.

Other historical sites include the 17th-century Fort Charles and Liberty Halls, the headquarters of one of the founders of Pan-Africanism, Marcus Garvey.

Kingston has earned itself a reputation for high levels of crime, so make sure you plan any trip to the city carefully and avoid areas that are known to be dangerous.

Visit Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is one of several seaside resort towns on the island. While Montego Bay and Negril are worth visiting, Ocho Rios is a great place to spend a couple of nights due to the range of interesting sites nearby, as well as a more relaxed, less high-end resort vibe than that of ‘MoBay’.

Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and Konoko Falls (more on them below) are all within 30 minutes’ drive, while locals and tourists alike mix at some ofJamaica’s best beaches, including Mahogany Beach, Fisherman’s Beach and Ocho Rios Bay. There’s plenty of character to the town itself too though, from the stalls of the Craft Market or Island Village to the tropical gardens of Shaw Park. The Clock Tower marks the centre of the city, and the surrounding area, filled with Caribbean architecture, is lively both day and night.

See the best waterfalls

Jamaica has a wealth of waterfalls to explore, and Dunn’s River Falls is undeniably the most popular for tourists. They lie around two miles from Ocho Rios, and remain an exceptionally beautiful natural wonder despite the large number of visitors. The falls themselves are idyllic; they stand at 180 metres tall and consist of giant limestone rocks covered with several cascades and surrounded by tropical rainforest. Visitors can climb to the top, but it gets busy so aim to visit outside of peak times.

Konoko Falls is another, less grandiose option near Ocho Rios, with a similarly picturesque setting and far fewer crowds. On the east coast, Reach Falls is one of the more remote options, where swimming in emerald pools and hiking up to Mandingo Cave are both popular. Mayfield Falls are a great option for those looking to swim among achingly beautiful surroundings, as are the waters of the Ocho Rios Blue Hole, where a smaller waterfall complements the turquoise waters below.

Explore the lagoons

The Blue Lagoon and Luminous Lagoon are two of Jamaica’s most striking natural sites, both situated on the northern coast and sitting along different points of the Martha Brae River.

The former lies in the east, where the waters of the Martha Brae funnel through to those of the Caribbean Sea. The lagoon is 55 metres deep and changes colour regularly – between shades of blue, emerald and turquoise – thanks to the mixing of freshwater and seawater. It lies in a protected cove among cliffs and dense greenery, and offers both wild swimming and boat tour opportunities.

The Luminous Lagoon sits further west, not far from Falmouth, and was once an important location for ships arriving to Jamaica. Though surrounded more by buildings than rainforest, this lagoon has become famous due to the microorganisms called dinoflagellates that populate it. When disturbed, they produce a glowing light that makes the lagoon a striking sight (access is only via boat tours, but you can swim as part of the tour).

Hit the beach

Like any Caribbean island, Jamaica is home to a slew of pristine beaches, where white sands are fringed by palm trees and lapped by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. These beaches range from beautiful secluded spots to much-loved resort areas like Montego Bay.

For something a little more private, opt for Frenchman’s Cove, Boston Bay, Lime Cay or Parrottee Beach. Areas like Half Moon Beach, Seven Mile and James Bond Beach are are little busier – with more restaurants and activities – while some of the most popular beaches on the island include Doctor’s Cave, Winnifred Beach and Reggae Beach. Ocho Rios Bay and Puerto Seco are the most popular resort beaches.

Explore Montego Bay

Montego Bay has formed a reputation as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Jamaica, offering luxurious accommodation options, stretches of fine white sands, lively nightlife and activities that range from water sports to hiking, golfing and enjoying the array of bars and restaurants. In reality, the city is split into two parts – the charming, if sometimes chaotic, local life of the city proper and the pristine beaches and fancy hotels of the touristy suburbs (and Ironshore in particular).

In the city, you can discover Jamaican history and culture, from the National Museum West to the Montego Bay Cultural Centre, as well as landmarks like the impressive St James Parish Church and bustling Sam Sharpe Square (slightly outside the city also lies the Indigenous Rastafarian Village). On the coast, visitors can spend days relaxing on beaches like Doctor’s Cave, enjoying a game of golf at Cinnamon Hill, hiking and rafting at Montpelier Jungle Outpost, or whiling away the afternoons and evenings with cocktails on the Hip Strip.

Like Kingston, some aresa of Montego Bay are known to be dangerous, so plan a city trip carefully and avoid any known crime spots.

Take a trip on a bamboo raft

Jamaica’s answer to the gondola trips of Venice is an even more relaxing affair. These trips take place on long bamboo rafts, with two or three people at a time taken along the waters of the Rio Grande or Martha Brae River by a local guide, floating through thick rainforest and green tunnels before stopping off for optional wild swims.

Tours set off from ‘Rafter’s Village’, a horseshoe-shaped island near the town of Falmouth on the northern coast, and start from around $99 USD (£77) for a two-person trip.

Try some local delicacies

Like many other Caribbean islands, Jamaica has taken influences from several countries and regions to produce the cuisine that is seen on the island today. African, Asian and European touches have mixed with native ingredients (and those introduced from elsewhere) to produce a culinary scene as varied and unique as anywhere in the region.

Popular dishes on the island include curry goat, ackee and saltfish (a local fruit prepared with salted codfish) and variations of jerk pork (slow-cooked pork marinated in chilies, thyme, allspice and garlic), with street food dishes such as beef patties (almost like a Jamaican version of Cornish pasties) and fried dumplings also found throughout the country, from street food vendors to restaurants. Rum is the alcoholic drink of choice here, and some of the best can be sampled with a tour of the Hampden Great House Estate.

Ascend Blue Mountain Peak

Blue Mountain Peak is Jamaica’s tallest mountain, standing at an impressive 2,256 metres tall. The ‘classic’ trail to the summit covers almost six miles over the course of around four hours – though some routes cover up to 10 miles – with many choosing to set off in the night to catch the sunrise at around 6am (a stay at Whitfield Hall allows you a later start time). Along the way you’ll pass through dense jungle vegetation that turns to pine trees and evergreens as the altitude increases, eventually giving way to a clear view the misty hills as the sun comes up.
