Guide to India's Mahaparinirvan Express Buddhist Circuit Train

A Special Train Tour that Visits India's Important Buddhist Sites

buddhist tourist train

The Mahaparinirvan Express is a special tourist train that takes passengers on a spiritual tour through Buddhist India, where Buddhism originated more than 2,500 years ago.

The train gets its name from the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, which contains the Buddha's final explanation of his teachings. Its sacred journey includes visits to the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites of Lumbini (where the Buddha was born), Bodhgaya (where he became enlightened), Sarnath (where he first preached), and Kushinagar (where he passed away and achieved nirvana).

Train Features

The Mahaparinirvan Express is operated by Indian Railways using carriages from a Rajdhani Express train. It has a dedicated dining carriage, hygienic kitchen that prepares passenger meals, and bathroom cubicles with showers. The train is comfortable but far from opulent, unlike India's luxury tourist trains , but then again pilgrimages aren't normally associated with luxury! Passengers are greeted with garlands, provided with luggage assistance, and given a welcome gift of a Buddhist guidebook. Security guards are present on the train, and tours are fully guided.

2020-21 and 2021-22 Departures

The train departs from Delhi , one or two Saturdays per month from September until March.

  • Departure dates for 2020-21 are November 21, December 19, January 16, February 13, February 27, March 13.
  • Departure dates for 2021-22 are September 25, October 9, October 23, November 6, November 20, December 4, December 8, January 1, January 15, January 29, February 12, February 26, March 12, March 26.

Journey Duration

The tour runs for seven nights/eight days. However, it's possible to travel only on selected parts of the route as long as your booking is for a minimum three nights.

Route and Itinerary

The itinerary is as follows:

  • Day One - Afternoon departure from Safdarjang Railway Station in Delhi to Gaya.
  • Day Two - Visit Bodhgaya temples by bus and stay the night at a hotel in Bodhgaya.
  • Day Three - Visit Rajgir and Nalanda by bus, and then board to the train to Varanasi at Gaya.
  • Day Four - Arrive at Varanasi , visit Sarnath (the tallest statue of Lord Buddha in India is in Sarnath), and attend the evening Ganga aarti ceremony alongside the Ganges River in Varanasi. Board the train to Nautanwa at Varanasi.
  • Day Five - Visit Lumbini in Nepal by bus, and stay the night at a hotel there.
  • Day Six - Visit Kushinagar by bus, and then proceed to Gorakhpur railway station for departure to Balrampur.
  • Day Seven - Visit Sravasti by bus, and return to Balrampur. for departure to Agra.
  • Day Eight - Visit the Taj Mahal in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri ). Return to Delhi by 6 p.m.

Cost and Classes of Travel

Three classes of travel are offered: air-conditioned first class (1AC), air-conditioned first class coupe, and air-conditioned two-tier (2AC). 1AC has four beds (two upper and two lower) in an enclosed compartment with lockable door, while there are only two beds (one upper and one lower) in the coupe. 2AC has four beds (two upper and two lower) in an open compartment with no door. If you're unsure about what the different classes of travel mean, this guide to accommodations on Indian Railways trains provides an explanation.

For 2020-21 departures, the fare in 1AC is $165 per person, per night, or $1,155 for the full tour. 2AC costs $135 per person, per night, or $945 for the full tour. The 1AC Coupe is $165 per person, per night, or $1,305 for the full tour.

A 10% discount is available for Indian citizens. A 50% discount on companion fare is also offered on certain departure dates for foreigners and Indians.

The cost includes the train journey, food, road transfers by air-conditioned vehicle, sightseeing, monument entrance fees, tour escort, insurance, and hotel stay in air-conditioned rooms where required.

Positives and Negatives

The tour is well-organized to international standards. However, something to be aware of is that there are a couple of long journeys by road. Passengers may find this uncomfortable due to lack of proper facilities, such as toilets, along the way. However, effort will be made to provide breaks at appropriate places. Rooms are also made available during the day at decent hotels, for passengers to freshen up and have breakfast.

On board, the train is kept very clean and the staff are courteous. Bed linen is changed every day, and the diverse dinner menu includes Asian and western cuisine. Special dietary requirements are catered for.

Overall, the Mahaparinirvan Express provides a convenient way to visit India's Buddhist sites. It attracts spiritual-seekers and pilgrims from all around the world.

Bookings and More Information

You can get more information or make reservations for travel on the Mahaparinirvan Express by visiting the Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation's Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train website.

Visas for Nepal

As the journey includes a day trip to Nepal, those who aren't Indian nationals will need a Nepali visa. This can easily be obtained at the border . Two passport-sized photographs are required. Foreign tourists with Indian visas must make sure that these are double or multiple entry visas, so that return to India will be allowed.

Mahaparinirvan Express Odisha Special

Indian Railways added a new service, the Mahaparinirvan Express Odisha Special, in 2012. It included pilgrimage sites in Odisha , as well as important sites in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. However, it has unfortunately been canceled due to lack of interest and poor advertising.

Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train - The Train

"Buddham Sharanam Gachaami Dhammam Sharanam Gachaami Sangham Sharanam Gachaami"

According to the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, the Buddha instructs his disciples that they have the opportunity to acquire merit and achieve a noble rebirth by embarking on a pilgrimage to the sites associated with his birth (Lumbini), enlightenment (Bodhgaya), initial teachings (Sarnath), and attainment of Nirvana (Kushinagar).

India, being the birthplace of Buddhism, continues to hold abundant traces of its profound Buddhist heritage. As part of its drive towards austerity, the only kind of art and architecture that it supported were Stupas (stone cased moulds that commemorated relics of Budha), Chaityas (prayer halls) and Viharas (cells for the monks).

Embark on a journey of enlightenment with the Buddhist Circuit Special Train.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train

For millennia, the footsteps of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, have left an indelible mark on the landscape of India and Nepal. Today, these hallowed grounds serve as a pilgrimage route for millions of Buddhist devotees worldwide. The Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train, a unique initiative by the Indian Railways, offers a captivating and comfortable way to explore these sacred sites, immersing oneself in the rich tapestry of Buddhist history, culture, and spiritual significance.

A Journey Through Time and Faith

The Buddhist Circuit Train embarks on a meticulously curated itinerary, encompassing eight key destinations associated with the life of Buddha:

  • Lumbini, Nepal: The journey begins in Lumbini, Nepal, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama. Here, pilgrims can visit the Maya Devi Temple, believed to be the site where Buddha entered the world, and soak in the serene atmosphere of the Lumbini Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Gaya, India: The train then transports passengers to Bodh Gaya, the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. Here, pilgrims can pay homage at the Mahabodhi Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and experience the spiritual power that continues to emanate from this sacred ground.
  • Rajgir, India: Rajgir, nestled amidst picturesque hills, was once the capital of the powerful Magadha kingdom. Here, pilgrims can visit the Vulture Peak (Gridhrakuta), where Buddha is said to have delivered many important sermons, and the Saptparni Caves, where Buddhist monks resided during the monsoon season.
  • Nalanda, India: Nalanda, once a renowned center of learning, was home to the famed Nalanda University, a flourishing seat of Buddhist scholarship from the 5th to the 12th centuries. Here, pilgrims can explore the ruins of this ancient university and imagine the intellectual vibrancy that once characterized this place.
  • Varanasi, India: Varanasi, the holiest city in Hinduism, also holds significance for Buddhists. Here, pilgrims can visit the Sarnath Deer Park, where Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and witness the Dhamek Stupa, a monument commemorating this event.

9 DAYS BUDDHIST CIRCUIT TOURIST TRAIN PACKAGE

Buddhism originated in India about 2600 years ago. After the Buddha gained Enlightenment at the age of 35, He spent 45 years sharing His Teachings throughout North India. During His eighty years alive (and especially after He gained Enlightenment), many locations became important Buddhist sites, and today Buddhist pilgrimage destinations.

Immediately after the passing of the Buddha, His foremost disciples convened the First Buddhist Council to record and codify His Teachings. The second Buddhist Council was held 100 years later in the town of Vaishali, another city He frequented. The third Buddhist Council was held in Pataliputra (Patna), during the reign of Emperor Ashoka (268 BC-239 BC). The Fourth Buddhist Council was held at Kashmir, in the time of Emperor Kanishka (127 AD- 141 AD.) He

After more than a thousand years of dominance and influence on the Indian subcontinent, Buddhism eventually died out due to various reasons, including invasions and rise of other faiths. Over time, Buddhism and Buddhist sites eventually became forgotten and abandoned in India.

Revival of the Buddhist faith came with excavations and archaeological digs by British explorers and scientists. Many phenomenal discoveries. In the 19th century, the British archaeologist Sir Alexander Cunningham excavated numerous Buddhist monuments. In 1891, the Sri Lankan scholar Anagarika Dharmapala launched the Mahabodhi Society of India at Bodhgaya. Since then, the Archaeological Survey of India has been responsible for an endless range of excavations. In fact, new excavations are leading to new 'finds' even today. That is why every important Buddhist spot has a site museum, which exhibits a huge range of Buddhist artefacts.

Today, the following are recognized as major destinations for Buddhist pilgrims seeking to follow the footsteps of the Buddha:

  • Lumbini (Nepal)  – where the Buddha was born
  • Bodhgaya (Bihar, India)  – where the Buddha gained Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree
  • Sarnath (in Uttar Pradesh, India)  – where the Buddha gave the First Sermon
  • Kushinagar (in Uttar Pradesh, India)  – where the Buddha entered Parinirvana
  • Rajgir (in Bihar)  – site where the Buddha gave many important sermons
  • Nalanda (in Bihar)  – location of famous Buddhist university in medieval times
  • Kapilavastu (India/Nepal border)  – where the Buddha spent His childhood and married life before renouncing to seek the Truth
  • Vaishali (in Bihar)  – where the Buddha gave His last sermon
  • Sravasti (in Uttar Pradesh)  – where the Buddha spent most of His life during rainy seasons at the Jetavan monastery (built by Anathapindika)

Indian Railways kickstart Buddhist Circuit Tourist train

The buddhist tourist train will cover 9 places across india and nepal that impacted buddha, help tourists experience his self-disciplined and legendary life.

To facilitate people to embark on the path of enlightenment, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation's (IRCTC) Buddhist Circuit Tourist train on the Bharat Gaurav Trains concept has commenced its spiritual journey.

In the Mahaparinirvana sutra, the Buddha tells his followers that they can attain merit and a noble rebirth by going on pilgrimage to the places where he was born- Lumbini, gained enlightenment- Bodhgaya, first taught- Sarnath, and attained Nirvana- Kushinagar.

The Buddhist tourist train takes people to these destinations and helps them experience first-hand the self-disciplined and legendary life of Lord Buddha.

India, the country where Buddhism originated has rich memories of the Buddhist legacy. As part of its drive towards austerity, the only kind of art and architecture that it supported were Stupas (stone-cased moulds that commemorated relics of Buddha), Chaityas (prayer halls) and Viharas (cells for the monks). Buddhist Train India will help you visit all these places up close for a truly religious experience.

The seven nights and eight days tour started on March 11 from Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station. This is the first departure of the tourist train post-COVID-19 pandemic. The tour will conclude on March 18 at Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station.

During the journey, the rail tour will cover nine places across India and Nepal, which had a significant impact on Buddha's life and teachings. The Buddhist tourist train takes tourists to these places and helps them to experience the self-disciplined and legendary life of Lord Buddha.

The train has two types of classes - AC 1st Class, and AC 2nd Class. A total of 96 guests can accommodate the First AC while 60 guests are allowed in the Second AC class, reported Financial Express.

The train starts from Delhi on Day one and traverses to Bodhgaya on Day two, which is the place where Buddhism began. All pilgrims and Buddhism followers are fond of this place and the legend attached to it. They usually visit here on the Bodhgaya tour also known as the Buddha Gaya tour. Lord Buddha was wandering near the banks of the Falgu river seeking answers when he sat under the Bodhi Tree. Three days and three nights of meditation helped him attain enlightenment and gather insight into humanity and being in general. On Day three, it will take people to Nalanda, which is situated 72 km off Patna and is part of the Buddhist Circuit, which also includes Rajgir and Bodhgaya.

It is famous for Surya Mandir and Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall, both popular destinations in Nalanda Buddhist tourism. Surya Mandir has a 5 feet tall statue of Goddess Parvati which is the main attraction among devotees. The temple comes alive during Chatt Puja which is held here twice a year.

On Day four, IRCTC Buddha Varanasi Travel Train takes you to the holy city of Varanasi which also goes by the name Banaras and Kashi. According to Legend Buddha set the wheel of dharma in motion here by giving his first sermon. The city has been patronized by many emperors supporting different doctrines and cultures including Adi Shankar who worshipped Shiva, and Akbar who built two big temples dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu.

On Day five it will enter Lumbini in Nepal. Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Lumbini is located very close to the Border of India, a few kilometres from Kathmandu. The nearest airport is in Bhairahawa, which one can reach by road. The site now is developed as a Buddhist Pilgrimage centre where archaeological remains of Lord Buddha are still there.

Kushinagar is next on the list of travel. On Day six, it will reach Kushinagar. It is a pilgrimage centre nestled in the beautiful state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated in Northern India, a few kilometres from Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh). This place is famous because The Great Lord Buddha attained Nirvana here. It is one of the top four famous Buddhist Pilgrimages.

Next on Day seven, the train stops at Shravasti. It is a town in Uttar Pradesh. It was the capital of the ancient Indian kingdom of Kosala and the place where the Buddha lived most after his enlightenment. It is near the Rapti river in the northeastern part of Uttar Pradesh India, close to the Nepalese border.

Finally, on Day 8, the train will take people to Agra, On the banks of Yamuna lies one of the most populous cities in Uttar Pradesh, Agra. It is a major tourist destination because of many UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Taj Mahal, Agra, Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

Founder of Buddhism - Lord Buddha was born to a princely family in Mid-6th Century BC, in a Kingdom located in South Nepal ,but just before he was going to be crowned the King. He lost all interest in worldly goods & one night Simply abandoned his Wife & Children, sleeping in the Palace Chambers - to wander in the forest area located near Hindu Pilgrimage of Gaya. It is said that he meditated for nearly twenty years ,before he preached his first sermon in a village located near to Hindu Pilgrimage town of Benares(now called Varanasi).

He wanted to bring about a Casteless Society (without strangle hold of any Priests Or Temples) & wanted his followers to follow a Noble Eightfold Path-The middle Way moderation Between extremes of sensual indulgence & self- mortification.

Wide Spread of Buddhism in South East Asia & Sri-Lanka was brought about Great Warrior King Ashoka in 250 Century BC ,who saw the futility of War after winning a battle in East Coast of India where a great massacre took place. During his reign only, for the first time Lord Buddha’s Preaching’s were written in Pali Script.

Buddhism was very popular in Kingdoms of North & Central India for more than 400 years till mid-3rd century A.D. ,before which the Hindu Priestly Class ( Brahmins) slowly restored their powers as Advisors to the Kings on how to rule the Kingdom

Over centuries, Four Different Schools of Thought –based on preaching of Lord Buddha have developed

  • THERAVADA BUDDHISM: is the most ancient form of Buddhism, is the dominant school in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar/Burma, Cambodia, and Laos). Its name translates to "Doctrine of the Elders," and it centres around the Pali scriptures, transcribed from the oral tradition taught by the Buddha. By studying these ancient texts, meditating, and following the eightfold path, Theravada Buddhists believe they will achieve Enlightenment. Strong emphasis is also placed on the monastic community and on heeding the advice of the wise.
  • Mahayana Buddhism : developed out of the Theravada tradition roughly 500 years after the Buddha attained Enlightenment. A number of individual schools and traditions have formed under the banner of Mahayana, including Zen Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Pure Land Buddhism, and Tantric Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism focuses on the idea of compassion and touts bodhisattvas, which are beings that work out of compassion to liberate other sentient beings from their suffering, as central devotional figures.
  • Vajrayana BUDHISM : was last of the three ancient forms to develop, and provides a quicker path to Enlightenment than either the Theravada or Mahayana schools. They believe that the physical has an effect on the spiritual and that the spiritual, in turn, affects the physical. Vajrayana Buddhists encourage rituals, chanting, and tantra techniques, along with a fundamental understanding of Theravada and Mahayana schools, as the way to attain Enlightenment.
  • Zen Buddhism : is said to have originated in China with the teachings of the monk Bodhi dharma. Zen Buddhism treats zazen meditation and daily practice as essential for attaining Enlightenment, and deemphasizes the rigorous study of scripture. Because Buddhism is a system based on practice and individual experience rather than on theology or dogma, the different forms that have emerged differ less in what they believe the Buddha's teachings to be than in how they believe Buddhism should be practiced in daily life. Here are some Web sites that explain the history of the various movements and ways to be involved in those sects, both online and off. Unfortunately, While Lord Buddha was against monolithic worship & simply wanted his followers to enlighten themselves by spreading his teachings ,He is Today prayed to as an Idol Majority of Buddhist followers DO NOT REMEMBER ,What Lord Buddha said: NEITHER AM I THE FIRST BUDDHA NOR THE LAST ONE ,anyone who attains ENGLIGHTMENT is a BUDDHA

Important Destinations Covered

BODHGAYA : It is Considered one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, it's dominated by the ancient brick Mahabodhi Temple Complex, built to mark the site where the Buddha attained enlightenment beneath a sacred Bodhi Tree. A direct descendant of the tree sits within the complex today, along with six other sacred sites, including a lotus pond.

RAJGIR : Is an ancient city Surrounded by hills, it's known for its holy sites. Remains of the Cyclopean Wall, which encircled the city centuries ago, still stand in the center. Close by, Venu Vana park was once home to a monastery built for Buddha. The shield-shaped Japanese Temple contains a huge Buddha statue. Nearby there are hot springs believed to have medicinal properties.

NALANDA : was, a large Buddhist monastery in the ancient kingdom of Magadha and was a centre of learning from the Fifth century BC to 9th Century AD & considered cradle of philosophy of Mahayana, which attracted students from as far as China & Indonesia . All students at Nalanda studied Mahayana as well as the texts of the eighteen Hinayana sects of Buddhism. IN later centuries ,Tantric Buddhism was also taught here. The university campus was ransacked by Muslim Invaders in 12th AD & now in ruins-,which the Govt. Authorities are in the process of slowly restoring.

SARNATH : Located near ancient Hindu Pilgrim town of Varanasi with Holy Ganges River, Sarnath is the places where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and where the Buddhist Sangha came into existence through the enlightenment of Kondanna. Also referred to as Isipatana, this city is mentioned by the Buddha as one of the four places of pilgrimage to which his devout followers should visit, if they wanted to visit a place for that reason.[1] It was also the site of the Buddha's Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which was his first teaching after attaining enlightenment, in which he taught the four noble truths and the teachings associated with it.

KUSHINAGAR : It is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site, where Buddhists believe Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana after his death[1] It is an international Buddhist pilgrimage centre. The followers of Buddhism, especially from Asian countries, wish to visit this place at least once in their lifetime.

LUMBINI : Located in Nepal, near Indian border, Lumbini is the place where, according to Buddhist tradition, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in Mid-6th Century BC & who is said to have achieved Enlightenment at age of 35 years -became the Buddha and founded Buddhism.

Lumbini has a number of temples, including the Maya Devi Temple and several others which are still under repair. Many monuments, monasteries and a museum, the Lumbini International Research Institute, are also within the holy site. Also there is the Puskarini, or Holy Pond, where the Buddha's mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he had his first bath. At other sites near Lumbini, earlier Buddha’s were, according to tradition, born, then achieved ultimate Enlightenment and finally relinquished their earthly forms.

SHRAVASTI : Considered amongst the six largest cities in India in 5th Century BC ,it closely associated with the life of Gautama Buddha, who is believed to have visited it 24 times during his lifetime. The Age-old stupas, majestic viharas and several temples " establish Buddha's association with Shravasti.

Major Sites on the Buddhist Circuit

The entire Buddhist Circuit encompasses four major sites and four minor sites, which include several off-the-grid experiences available through the luxury Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train tour. Tourists can easily visit major sites on their own, however. Tourists who do not practice Buddhism are welcome to visit each site but should be mindful of local culture and customs. Guests should wear modest clothing (no tank tops or short shorts), remove shoes before entering temples and avoid using profanity. Tourists planning their own itinerary to walk in “Buddha’s footprints” will want to include plenty of time to explore these three major sites.

Bodhgaya Buddhist Circuit India

Bodh Gaya – Place of Buddha’s Enlightenment

In the mountainous corner of northeast Bihar, the village of Bodh Gaya harbors one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage points in the world. Mahabodhi Temple Complex represents the place where Buddha achieved enlightenment and continues today to preserve a descendant of the sacred Bodhi tree, under which Buddha meditated. A few other landmarks can be found outside the temple grounds and in the surrounding area. Visitors won’t want to miss these Buddhist attractions in Bodh Gaya.

  • Mahabodhi Temple – standing tall and adorned with intricate carvings, this temple houses one of Buddhism’s most sacred symbols – the Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Guests can soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this historic sanctuary and meditate during nighttime illumination ceremonies.
  • Thai Temple – built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of India-Thailand diplomatic relations, this temple contains a 25-meter-tall statue of Buddha and is a stellar example of traditional Thai architecture.
  • Niranjana River – Buddha is said to have crossed this stream, also known as Phalgu River, during his journey to Bodhgaya .
  • Japanese Temple – also called the Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple, this peaceful complex built in traditional Japanese style features a manicured garden, meditation hall and statue of Buddha. Visitors can view inscriptions of Buddha’s teachings in the walls of the complex.
  • Great Buddha Statue – towering over the Gaya landscape at a height of 80 feet, the red granite statue symbolizes peace to all who visit the region.

Not far from Bodh Gaya, in Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh , is where Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon after reaching enlightenment. It is also where Buddha’s first five disciples received enlightenment. In Buddha’s teachings, he recommended Sarnath as one of the four places devout followers should visit during a pilgrimage. Other sites in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, that help complete the Buddhist Circuit tour include the following:

  • Sarnath Museum – exhibits of Buddhist cultural wealth and artifacts recovered from the site of Buddha’s first sermon are housed in this remarkable museum. Outside the museum, visitors can view Archaeological Buddhist Remains of Sarnath.
  • Mahabodhi Society Temple (Mulagandha Kuty Vihara) – built in 1931, this astonishing temple enshrines sacred relics of Sakyamuni Buddha and serves as a modern-day place of worship.
  • Chaukhandi Stupa –declared a monument of national importance, Chaukhandi Stupa is thought to have been originally built to mark the site where Buddha first met his disciples while traveling through the area. The stupa is believed to date to the 7th or 8th century.
  • Wat Thai Sarnath Temple – one of the most modern landmarks on the Buddhist Circuit, this ornate temple was built in 1993 by Thai dignitaries and contains an 80-foot tall statue of Buddha.

Kushinagar Buddhist Circuit India

Kushinagar – Place of Buddha’s Death

Five hours north of Sarnath by car is where Buddha is said to have taken his last breath. Only Buddha and his disciples did not drive to Kushinagar. They walked. According to Buddhist teachings, seven days after Buddha reached Parinirvana, or death, in Kushinagar, his remains were cremated in the same location. As a Buddhist pilgrimage site, Kushinagar features several sacred landmarks.

  • Parinirvana Temple – this iconic temple contains a six-meter long statue of the reclining Buddha, representing the position he was in when he died, made of a single block of sandstone.
  • Parinirvana Stupa – excavated in 1876, this landmark contained a copper plate marked with the text of the Nidana Sutra and a statement of the person who installed the reclining Buddha statue.
  • Ramabhar Stupa – the cremation site of Buddha is located just east of Parinirvana Temple.
  • Matha Kuar Shrine – the statue of Buddha housed in this shrine was built in the 10th or 11th century, according to the inscription on the statue’s base. The statue is carved from a single piece of stone and represents Buddha sitting under the sacred Bodhi tree.
