authenticity trip lyrics

Yeah! I'm losin' my English accent Think of all the changes you put me through, girl Back against the pit boss again And now I'm fencin' with him With just a fountain pen See I'm dead as a dog On these one-night stands And now I'm in these classes Just to be your man I just wanted my big toe In the soft, soft sand Now I'm neck deep in the quick, quick So tell me are you ready For the bitter truth? Authenticity Trip Yes, 200-proof But I keep it in the cupboard By your baby tooth That your mom saved I think your mommy's nice So tonight we're takin' a jet-plane 'round To somebody's house Out in the Hollywood Hills I said the Hollywood Hills Like I've been there before But I haven't in a while Or really at all Go! Someday I'll win I'm not Ichabod Crane And though dark my days I'll say until then Someday I'll win I'm not Ichabod Crane So mark it down While I say it again I'm stuck here In Bubble's of Teaneck Since you kicked me out It just seems like a good place to be Gonna get my head straight again With some guys with some time And some clothes that get cleaned We're dancin' in the window Like we like to dance Get a full head of steam In our waggled-up stance Cause tonight Sleepy Hollow's Just a few miles away With dramatic re-enactments And an overnight stay Go! Someday I'll win I'm not Ichabod Crane And though dark my days I'll say until then Someday I'll win I'm not Ichabod Crane So mark it down While I say it again Someday I'll win I'm not Ichabod Crane And though dark my days I'll say until then Someday I'll win I'm not Ichabod Crane So mark it down While I say it again

Legend of Sleepy Hollow? [ edit ]

Is the entire song about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow? Like how The Lady And The Tiger is based on the short story? I only suspect this because Ichabod Crane is the protagonist of Legend of Sleep Hollow, and the song mentions Sleepy Hollow itself, but I've never read the story, so I wouldn't know. -- Jason DeLima - ♥ ! - 00:56, 6 December 2011 (EST)

Reply to You Probably Get That A Lot/Cephalophore [ edit ]

I think this was placed on track #2 as the other John's pre-reply to You Probably Get That A Lot.

"I'm not Ichabod Crane" - I've never met a headless person! I don't know what you're talking about! (Repeat over and over until it becomes true).

"Gonna get my head straight again" - My head is gonna get better!

"Full head of steam" - See I'm doing better already! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.191.185.32 ( talk • contribs ) 16:17, December 15, 2011

A relationship song, probably [ edit ]

It seems that this song is about how a guy did a bunch of stuff to get a girl's attention (one-night stands, classes: just to be your man; think of all the changes you put me through), and he's beginning to regret it and has gotten more than he bargained for (I just wanted my big toe... and now I'm neck deep). The references to Ichabod Crane fits in because, in Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod's main objective was to court and marry a girl, which he did not succeed in. The singer is contrasting this with his own situation, saying that "Someday I'll win- I'm not Ichabod Crane). This may be based on some real-life story, as "Bubble's of Teaneck" is pretty specific and I'm not sure how it fits in with the story.

Headless Horseman [ edit ]

I like to think that this song is being sung by the Headless Horseman who stole Ichabod Crane's head. He's trying to impress a girl, but since he's wearing Ichabod's head he seems to be having Ichabod's luck.

The heart of the song is about putting on a fake exterior in order to appear more impressive. Acquiring a new head, cleaning his clothes, losing his accent, taking classes, pretending to have been to the Hollywood Hills, acting like he likes to dance, he's doing it all "just to be [her] man." Now he's in a laundromat in Teaneck, NJ, less than 30 miles from Tarrytown, NY, the home of Sleepy Hollow.

He's doing everything he can to "get [his] head straight again," but he can't escape "the bitter truth." Perhaps this is the truth that his real head is kept in a jar in the cupboard, "200-proof" referring to the fluid that his head is preserved in. But, "mark it down; ... someday [he'll] win!" After all, despite how he looks, he's "not Ichabod Crane!" -- Sam Stephens

Deranged [ edit ]

Someone is changing themselves for a girl they like. They even loose their english accent. But changing for someone like that isnt exactly authentic. But as the lyrics say, he is dead as a dog on one night stands. He really wants to get that person to like them. He even takes classes to get them. Propably classes by these so called "dating experts" who will tell you that you need to be strong, and that girls like strong men. You have to be "alpha". One day, he is sick of it, as indicated by the line "i just wanted my big toe in the soft soft sand, now im neck deep in the quick, quick" (quick as in quicksand i imagine.) He becomes deranged, and asks her if she is ready for "the bitter truth". He becomes violent, and takes her on a trip round, to show her his true self. I suspect it isnt actually his true self. His true self is propably a nice guy, but just that, a nice guy. But now he is deranged. Likely violent. Likely because of all those dating classes he took that told him he needed to be strong. Now he isnt strong, but abusive deranged and bad. He takes her on a deranged trip. A "authenticity trip" as you will. He takes her partying in hollywood. They dance and just party. He is having the time of his life. She, most likely not. In the end he tries to actually reenact the events of sleepy hollow, and possibly takes her head off her body. The whole song he had a weird obsession with the legend of sleepy hollow. He went to the hollywood hills, because hollywood is where movies get made. He reenacts it, but this time he doesnt loose. This time he is strong. This time he is manly. This time he is a headless idiot. He is the headless Horseman, and she is ichabod crane. As the song says, "im not ichabod crane". Now she is. In the end, by trying to change himself he became someone truly despisable and deranged.

Celebrating Two Artists Forging Their Own Paths This Black History Month

Campaigns /  february 2024.

Image of Dee-1 and Joyce Wrice.

Community. Identity. Legacy.

Music is a universal language, one that bridges generational and cultural divides. It breaks down barriers, connecting us to something much bigger than ourselves. This Black History Month, we’re highlighting Dee-1 and Joyce Wrice — two musicians using their voices to champion community, celebrate their identities, and honor the legacies they hope to leave behind for generations to come. Each artist also worked with Levi’s® to create patches commemorating Black History Month.

Image of Dee-1

Over the course of his career, the rapper, activist, and scholar Dee-1 has staunchly supported the belief that music has the power to transform Black culture as we know it. The proof can be found in his sheer poeticism - his ability to pen lyrics that are not only memorable, but also socially conscious. “We have to look at hip hop as more than just an art form. There's lyrics, there's repetition, and there's rhyme. All of these things contribute to being able to remember what it is that you are hearing at a higher rate than you would remember a pastor preaching a sermon or a teacher giving a lecture.”

Music has the opportunity to make impact and to have influence in somebody’s life forever

Image of Dee-1

Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, a city with historic ties to beloved Black music legends like gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and rapper Lil Wayne, Dee-1 has become a hometown hero of sorts for his commitment to uplifting his community through song. It’s a big responsibility, and you better believe he’s well-equipped for it. After being awarded the 2020 NAACP “Power of Influence” award for his activism, he became the first rapper appointed to the Louisiana Council for the “Success of Black Men and Boys”. He has since backed up these accolades by pursuing academic research on how hip-hop can be used as a teaching instrument inside the Black community. “Rap music is not just entertainment. It is more than that. It is literally the manual to a lifestyle for the people who are listening to it.” Most recently, the rapper completed the 2023 Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellowship at Harvard University’s Hiphop Archive & Research Institute. This year he has been named the Alan Solomont Artist/Scholar-in-Residence at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life.

Image of Dee-1.

Dee-1’s love for hip-hop began at a young age. He was known for keeping a notebook filled with lyrics in high school and college. After graduating from Louisiana State University in 2008 and accepting a middle school teaching position, he started to see the benefit of pursuing music full-time. He witnessed firsthand the impact he could have on the next generation of young people who — like him — look to music for inspiration and strength in times of struggle. “Music has the opportunity to make impact and to have influence in somebody’s life forever. Impact over income is my mindset. When you focus on impact, the income will always land right where it’s supposed to.” His 2009 album, aptly named “David & Goliath'', retells the biblical story from his perspective as an artist. The parable has also served as the inspiration for his first anti-bullying hip-hop children’s book, “David Found His Slingshot”, which teaches kids how to use their unique gifts and talents to overcome obstacles in their lives. “Metaphorically, we all have a little bit of David in us, and we all have a slingshot. My slingshots are hip-hop and education. When you use your slingshots for the proper purpose, you're able to defeat the Goliaths in your life.”

Image of Dee-1.

This Black History Month, Dee-1 is taking stock of how far he has come and the legacy he hopes to leave behind. In December he hosted a sit-down with over 100 rappers in and around the New Orleans area to discuss everything from taking accountability for the messages they are putting out there to mental health. His advice for the next generation? “Be real, be righteous, and be relevant. Being real is all about being authentic and loving who you are when you’re looking in the mirror, even with your flaws and mistakes. Being righteous is understanding that doing the right thing is always right and doing the wrong thing is always wrong. Don’t let this world confuse and trick you. And being relevant is all about shutting up and grinding.” His dedication to his community and culture remains at the heart of everything Dee-1 does. He recalls a trip to West Africa that he took as a teenager with a group of fellow students and how much of an impact it had on him. “I remember us standing on a beach in Ghana, all holding hands. Just a bunch of Black solidarity as the sun rises. That felt like Black glory in that moment — being connected to your roots, but also being unified with others.”

Joyce Wrice

The moment you hear singer and songwriter Joyce Wrice’s music wafting through your speakers, you’re immediately transported into her own unique world. You hear it in the sweet lilt of her voice and soulful melodies, the way she is able to blend ‘90s-inspired R&B vocals with hip-hop inflected beats to create a vibe that is uniquely all her own. It should come as no surprise that she counts Black music legends Tamia, Aaliyah, and Missy Elliott as some of her biggest influences. “It's a blessing to have grown up in a time where there were these huge stars.” As a star on the rise herself, she’s proving that independent artists can forge their own paths while still honoring the legacies of the artists who came before.

It's hard being in this industry as a Black woman. But I think it's really important to know that you can be the change you want to see.

Growing up, Wrice was the only child to her Black American father and Japanese mother. Her parents met while her father was in the navy and stationed in Tokyo, Japan. The couple moved to her father’s hometown of Flint, Michigan before relocating to Chula Vista, California where Wrice was raised. She regularly visited the local Buddhist temple with her mother and quickly adopted it as a community space where she could be around other families and kids with her shared heritage. “I grew up around a lot of Black and Japanese kids through my mom's and dad’s friends. It was nice to be around other people who looked like me and had the same background as me.”

Image of Joyce Wrice

Wrice describes herself as a shy child, careful not to be too loud or attract too much attention. She credits music — more specifically, her parents’ love for music — with helping her break out of her shell. Some of her earliest music memories are ones watching her father work on his motorcycle blasting neosoul or sitting in the backseat of his car with the top-down, listening to everything from jazz and reggae to hip-hop and R&B. “I vividly remember he had CDs from Biggie, Tamia, and Brandy. And I remember 112 and Biggie’s “Only You” remix playing in the car.” Music provided her with the outlet and courage she needed to become the talented performer she is today.

Image of Joyce Wrice

Throughout her young adulthood, Wrice participated in talent shows and dance performances. She even tagged along with friends to dance auditions in order to hone her skills. “Mystically, that really was my training for the type of performances I like to put on right now, which is incorporating choreography.” Her debut album “Overgrown” was released in 2021, and her sophomore album is in the works. As her career has taken off, Joyce has not forgotten to pay homage to the struggle of Black music pioneers who have come before her. “It's hard being in this industry as a Black woman [and independent artist]. But I think it's really important to know that you can be the change you want to see.” This Black History Month, Wrice is reflecting on the power she finds within her family and music community. She's also continuing to have deep conversations with her relatives to honor her heritage. “I'm discovering I have Trinidadian lineage and all these things.” Wrice encourages everyone to celebrate their uniqueness and individual stories. "I grew up being told that I have a unique story to tell — that we all do — every single person does. And everyone has a mission in this lifetime. So, it's always important to live with purpose.”

Follow the Rain (documentary)

Escapade Media has come on board to take international sales rights to ‘ Follow the Rain ,’ a feature-length documentary about unknown species of mushroom that has enjoyed theatrical release in its native Australia .

Popular on Variety

“This fungi adventure takes us into some of the oldest landscapes in Australia, to explore the critical role fungi play on earth and how they can help humans in the fight against climate change. It includes a journey into the world of zombie fungus hunting, a dig into the hidden trading deals between fungi and trees, a 10-year investigation to name a new species and the discovery of the fungal life of a desert,” said Marcinak and Axford.

The pair also make the claim that fungi are not only protecting humans against the worst impact of climate change, they say that without fungi forests would not exist.

Partly funded by the non-profit organization Documentary Australia and by crowdfunding, the film cost close to $1 million to produce.

It had theatrical screenings at the Bangalow Film Festival and at the Dorrigo Old Gazette Theatre in March and is set for further limited runs in Australia through June. Escapade is planning to launch it internationally at MIPCOM In October.

“A decade in the making, [‘Follow the Rain’] is a labor of love that finds a perfect advocate in Escapade, renowned for championing authentic narratives about our natural world,” said Marciniak.
