Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan: The Complete Guide

The 15th century Kumbhalgarh Fort in Rajasthan is one of the popular desert state's lesser-known historical masterpieces . Yet, it's of extraordinary significance. You may be surprised to discover that the mammoth wall of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the second longest continuous wall in the world (after the iconic Great Wall of China), earning it the title of "Great Wall of India". What's not surprising is that Mughal invaders found it impossible to penetrate the fort. While Chittorgarh Fort served as the capital of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar, it was Kumbhalgarh that provided refuge for its rulers in times of attack.

Kumbhalgarh is named after Mewar king Rana Kumbha, who built it from 1443 to 1458. During his reign, the king focused on fort planning and architecture. He and his architect, Mandan, are acclaimed for experimenting with and perfecting medieval Rajput fort design, adding many new innovations. Apparently, Rana Kumbha constructed or restored 32 forts — quite an achievement! This included strengthening the walls of Chittorgarh Fort.

It's said that site of Kumbhalgarh Fort was originally settled by a Jain prince, Samprati, in the 2nd century BC. Its isolated and concealed position, atop a lofty hill surrounded by concentric hills and valleys, gave it a commanding view and strategic importance. Previous Mewar rulers were familiar with the site's potential. However, it was Rana Kumbha who harnessed it and meticulously developed it, by taking advantage of the terrain's natural contours. What's particularly ingeniousness about the fort's colossal wall is that it follows the contours instead of a straight path.

The wall snakes for an astonishing 36 kilometers (22 miles) over 13 hills. Making such an extensive protective boundary around a fort hadn't been done before. What also sets Kumbhalgarh apart from many other forts in India is that it was conceived and constructed in a single phase.

Unfortunately, Rana Kumbha was killed by his son Udai Singh I in 1468, not long after Kumbhalgarh was built. The fort lost its glory for many decades after that but was revived to play a key role in the Mewar kingdom's history. After Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat besieged Chittorgarh Fort in 1535, the heir to the throne, Udai Singh II, was sent to Kumbhalgarh for safety. He was coronated inside the fort in 1540 and his son, heroic king and warrior Maharana Pratap (great great grandson of Rana Kumbha), was born there the same year.

Udai Singh II went on to found Udaipur , before dying in 1572. Maharana Pratap spent much of his reign at war with powerful Mughal Emperor Akbar. Unlike neighboring Rajput rulers, he refused to give in to the Mughals. This resulted in the horrific battle of Haldi Ghati in 1576. Although the Mughals won, Maharana Pratap managed to escape.

The Mughals continued to try and capture Kumbhalgarh but failed. To gain access, they had to resort to poisoning its water supply, in 1579. This enabled them to occupy the fort for a few years, until Maharana Pratap recovered it in the 1582 Battle of Dewair near Haldi Ghati. The Mewar king's victory was overturned in the 17th century though, when Rana Amar Singh I (Manarana Pratap's son) reluctantly gave up the fight and surrendered to Mughal Emperor Jehangir in 1615. Kumbhalgarh's importance waned from then on.

Violent invasion of Marathas, from present-day Maharashtra, became the main threat in the 18th century after the decline of the Mughals. It wasn't until the early 19th century that the fort was finally returned to the Mewar kings, when Maharana Bhim Singh signed an alliance treaty with the British East India Company in 1818.

During his reign from 1884 to 1930, Maharana Fateh Singh carried out restoration works at Kumbhalgarh. The visionary king was an avid builder. He added the Badal Mahal at the fort's highest point (he constructed the magnificent Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel , which is part of the City Palace complex in Udaipur , too).

Following India's independence from the British, Kumbhalgarh became a protected monument under the auspices of the Archeological Survey of India.

The fort is located within Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, just over two hours north of Udaipur in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan's Rajsamand district. It sits at the boundary of the erstwhile kingdoms of Mewar and Marwar (which ruled the region to the west around Jodhpur ).

How to Get There

Kumbhalgarh is commonly visited on a day trip or side trip from Udaipur . You can easily hire a car and driver from the multitude of travel agencies in Udaipur. Expect to pay anywhere from 2,800-3,600 rupees for a full day, depending on the vehicle type.

If budget is a concern and you don't mind a longer (and somewhat inconvenient) journey, buses run every hour or so from Chetak Circle in Udaipur to Kelwara village near the fort. Travel time is about three hours and costs 50 rupees. Get off the bus at Kumbhalgarh Circle, a couple of kilometers (1.25 miles) before the fort, and take a jeep taxi from there. Local buses run between Kumbhalgarh Circle and Kelwara.

The fort is officially open daily from 8 or 9 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m., depending on the time of year. People actually live inside the fort though, so it's possible to remain in there!

Entry tickets cost 40 rupees for Indians and 600 rupees for foreigners. There's no entry charge for children under 15 years of age.

What to Do There

Plan to spend three to four hours exploring Kumbhalgarh Fort. There's quite a bit to see and some strenuous uphill walking is required, as vehicles aren't permitted to go inside (unlike Chittorgarh). The unforgettable view from the top of the fort makes the effort worth it, and the sheer size of the fort's exterior wall alone is simply awe-inspiring.

Guides are available at the fort entrance and you can expect to pay 300-400 rupees for one, depending on your group size. Alternatively, you can wander through the fort by yourself if you're not interested in its detailed history.

There are more than 360 temples scattered within the fort, most of which belong to Jain deities. You'll come across a cluster of temples after you go through the gargantuan main gate. From there, follow the paved path upwards through successive fortified pols (gates) to the fort's three palaces, at different levels. These are Kumbha Palace, Jhalia ka Malia (Palace of Queen Jhalia) where Maharana Pratap was born, and the topmost Badal Mahal. A building housing several canons is another highlight.

The fort is particularly spectacular around sunset and just afterward, when its structures are evocatively illuminated. Those who want to learn more about the history of the fort may want to stay on for the evening sound and light show (offered in Hindi only). There's no fixed starting time. The show begins as soon as it's dark enough. This could be as early as 6 p.m. or as late as 7:30 p.m. It runs for about 45 minutes. Tickets cost 118 rupees for adults and 49 rupees for kids.

You'll get a fabulous view of the fort and its exterior wall from the viewpoint about a kilometer (0.6 miles) before the main entrance. A zip-line runs across the valley to the fort wall as well. Feeling energetic? It's possible to walk along the wall, into the wilderness, starting out from the entrance gate (Ram Pol). Those who are particularly adventurous can hike the entire length of the wall. It takes two days.

If you stay at Kumbhalgarh longer than a day, you'll be able to enjoy numerous nature trails and outdoor activities in the area. The Kumbhalgarh-Ranakpur trek through Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular option. It's quite an easy downhill trek that's approximately four hours in duration. Take a local guide with you.

Many people combine visiting Kumbhalgarh with Haldi Ghati, or the Jain temples at Ranakpur.

Rajasthan Tourism organizes an annual three-day Kumbhalgarh festival at the fort from December 1-3 every year . It features music and dance performances by folk artists, puppet shows, fun traditional games, and a heritage walk.

Where to Stay

The Aodhi , owned by the Mewar royal family, is the most renowned hotel in the area. It's nestled into the jungle close to the fort, has an outdoor swimming pool and offers horse riding. Expect to pay about 6,000 rupees per night and up for a double room.

Club Mahindra has a resort at Kumbhalgarh, which is ideal for families. If you're not a member, rates start from about 10,000 rupees per night during the tourist season. Breakfast is included.

Fateh Safari Lodge , perched high in the hills, will appeal to outdoorsy travelers. It's a relatively new luxury property that opened in late 2014, and is part of the same group as the Fateh Garh hotel in Udaipur . Expect to pay upwards of 5,000 rupees per night for a double room.

There are numerous other new luxury resorts in the area, with rates starting around 6,000 rupees per night. These include Via Lakhela Resort & Spa , The Wild Retreat , and Kumbhalgarh Safari Camp .

Hotel Kumbhal Palace is the closest budget option to the fort, not far from The Aodhi. It has decent rooms and luxury tents priced from 2,500-3,500 rupees per night.

Otherwise, head to Kelwara village for cheaper budget accommodations. Try New Ratan Deep Hotel or Karni Palace Hotel there.

Kumbhalgarh Fort and Palaces : A Point of Historic Significance

Situated 80 odd km north of Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh is a popular tourist spot. Cradled amidst mountains, the area boasts tranquility as well as serene exquisiteness. A 15 th century construction, this has had its own share of historic significance. Forts, palaces, temples make the visit a

worthwhile. The fort, deriving the name from its builder Rana Kumbha, has been a refuge to all the Mewar troops in hostile conditions. The topographical location and the inaccessibility on the rugged terrain had gifted Kumbhalgarh fort and palaces higher level of security. Placed 1100 m high above the sea level, this fort Is guarded by a 36 km running wall. This fetches it the third rank in the world, after China’s the Great Wall and that of Iran’s Gorgan. Second most important fort after that of Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh fort and palaces flaunt around 30 dozens of temples, mostly Jain. There are seven major gateways to this fort, each bearing its own uniqueness. The main entrance, situated in the southern portion, is called the Aret Pol. Mirror signals could be transmitted from this gateway, at times of emergency. The secong gateway is the Hulla Pol. It is also called Gate of disturbance. There is a history behind such rechristening. When the Mughal Army had attacked the fort, the army could penetrate till this gate only. The cannon ball marks bear testimony to that. The third gate is the Hanuman Pol. It is so called because it has a Hanuman temple on it.

Bhairava Pol is the fourth gate. In the 19 th century, the existent prime minister was exiled from the territory due to disloyalty. This gateway bears a panel that shows documentation of that incident. What follows is the Paghra Pol, the fifth gate. This Stirrup Gate was the assembly point of cavalry before embarking for a battle. The sixth or the Topekhana Pol, also called the Cannon gate, bore a passage beneath the ground for escaping to a secret hideout. The seventh or the Nimboo Pol is dedicated to Goddess Chamunda.

The interior of the fort is a complex palatial structure. There are quite a handful of Kumbhalgarh palaces. Few of the notables are:

Badal Mahal— The highest point in the fort, this palace is adorned with several hand paintings.

When University of Chicago Medicine opens the doors of its 132,000-square-foot multispecialty care center this week in Crown Point, local leaders hope the facility will bridge healthcare gaps in Northwest Indiana.

UChicago Medicine Crown Point held a ceremonial ribbon cutting and tours on Thursday.

Tom Jackiewicz, University of Chicago Medicine Health System President, said bringing academic medicine to Northwest Indiana has been a longtime goal for the Illinois-based company. The process of finding the right location spanned years.

“We are glad to be a part of this community. When we were looking for locations, I first learned about Crown Point,” Jackiewicz said. “And this turned out to be the best place for the center. This is our first investment in Indiana, and it won’t be our last. It fits in with the focal point of the University of Chicago Medicine, which is to offer all specialities with high-end care to as many people as possible. Now those who live here don’t have to go to Chicago for that. We are bringing that level of care closer to home.”

The facility, located at 10855 Virginia St. in Crown Point, is characterized by open, airy spaces and shades of sandy and sea glass colors. The lobby has high, cloud-like lighting fixtures and scenes of nature and birds can be found throughout the center, which has patients already lined up for appointments.

“This is the first I’m seeing it and it’s beautiful,” said Jennifer Hill, secretary of the University of Chicago Medical Center Board. “They really breathed into it themes of Northwest Indiana, with pictures of the dunes and the greens and blues. It’s very purposefully designed to honor Northwest Indiana.”

Crown Point Mayor Pete Land was glad the final choice landed on Crown Point. The official groundbreaking happened in 2022, when the land was just a field, he said.

“That important step in that journey is what led us here today,” Land said. “This is the result of local leadership and leadership in the University of Chicago Medicine. We worked together. We had a shared vision of helping to ensure Crown Point, Northwest Indiana, and quite frankly Northern Indiana had the highest level of healthcare.”

The center’s main function will be advanced specialty care, such as pediatric services from the UChicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, as well as cancer care from the UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center.

There will also be doctor’s offices for outpatient appointments, infusion therapy, radiation treatment and medical/surgical oncology for cancer patients. Patients will also have access to a breast imaging center and MRI, CT, PET, X-ray and ultrasound imaging capabilities.

Other features include an ambulatory surgery center, advanced laboratory services and a small emergency department and inpatient unit.

Dr. Mark Anderson, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Pritzker School of Medicine, shared a personal story that tied into the occasion.

“I had a sister who lived in Merrillville who became critically ill, and she was ill enough that I talked to her doctor a lot,” Anderson said. “I flew out to see what was the best thing to do, her sickness was becoming too complex to deal with at this very good hospital… And we talked about where we should send her, and he said either IU or the University of Chicago. And I asked, ‘If she were your sister, where would you send her?’ And without missing a beat he said, ‘I would send her to University of Chicago.’”

The UChicago Medicine’s clinical trials program is set to bring academic medicine to Northwest Indiana, company leaders said.

“You can see from the list of specialists we are going to have tremendous people here,” Jackiewicz said. “We want to make sure we work really closely with local physicians and hospitals — we don’t want to be in competition. We want to be a partner with local healthcare providers.”

An estimated 15% of Northwest Indiana patients leave the region for their medical care, according to a study conducted by UChicago Medicine. Of those, 1 in 5 visit UChicago Medicine’s facilities in and around Chicago, the study said.

Local leaders said they hope this facility helps fill in the gaps for local healthcare needs.

“Pediatrics is a shortfall in Northwest Indiana, so that’s very needed here,” said Lake County Councilman Charlie Brown, D-Gary.

Lake County Commissioner Michael Repay, D-Hammond, said he sees the variety of specialties in cancer care being a huge benefit to residents, who no longer will have to drive to Chicago for certain treatments and appointments.

“I’m excited to have top-tier medical care in this community, and I look forward to seeing what they’ll do here,” Repay said. “…It’s good to have this in the southern hub to be able to service the rest of the Region.”

Hessville native Dr. Blase Polite, the University of Chicago Medicine Northwest Indiana Physician-In Chief, said this center’s opening means a lot to him personally.

“We have probably the most robust pediatric subspecialty program here on this site anywhere outside of Riley (Hospital for Children) in Indianapolis — and to me, that tells me everything,” Polite said. “And it embodies the vision we all share, which is: We didn’t come here to compete and put people out of business. We came here to partner and provide things for clinicians, for patients and for many of the residents here in Northwest indiana. And we know our being here will only help the community to continue to grow and make it a very attractive destination for people interested in moving into the Northwest indiana area.”

Registered nurse Elizabeth Lavendusky grew up in Hebron and lives in Portage. She said by working at the new center, she now has the ability to refer parents to any medical specialty their child might need — even to the point of video calling doctors from around the country.

“I started out as an EMT starting right out of high school, and now to have this here in the community — it’s amazing,” Lavendusky said.

Marsha Sumner, University of Chicago Medicine Director of Spiritual Care, spent some of her early years as a chaplain traveling around Northwest Indiana.

“The people of Northwest Indiana have a special place in my heart,” Sumner said. “My first job as a chaplain was at a hospice here, traveling all over the area, including Crown Point. Meeting people in their homes and care facilities. …My own spirit was renewed from the people and the landscape. So I was thrilled when the University of Chicago Medicine was going to bring our world class care here to Northwest Indiana.”

UChicago Medicine also has clinics in Merrillville, Munster and Schererville and in September 2023, it acquired four regional oncology centers from Michiana Hematology Oncology.

Jackiewicz said they already added another 14,000 square feet to the originally planned space, and have the ability to add more.

“I think as you see, it will build and grow and be a bigger and bigger part of the community,” he said.
